OCTOBER 2013 NORTH SHORE HWY 61 5

by Joan Farnam October is fall colors, art tours and exhibits, a play and lots of good music, including the Bluegrass Master’s Weekend at Lutsen Resort. Up first is the Crossing Borders Studio Tour and Sale with studios open along the North Shore from just outside of Duluth to the Canadian border. This year, 22 career artists will be featured in seven different studios, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27 through Sunday, Oct. 6. Artwork includes stone sculpture, Ojibwe art, pottery, weaving, glass sculpture and jewelry, print making, wood turning and carving, furniture, metal works and jewelry, leather and flint-knapping. Crossing Borders is always a fun event because the artists open their studios to the public, there’s lots of new work, and we can learn about them, their art and how the North Shore influences their work. Refreshments are served, too, doubling the “Welcome!” experience. Here in Cook County, four studios are featured: Betsy Bowen’s Studio in Grand Marais, KKD Pottery Studio at Hut Point (13 miles East of Grand Marais), Dan & Lee Ross in Hovland and Marcie McIntire’s Niingii-Ozhitoomin Ojibwe Art Gallery in Grand Portage. Two of the studios feature guest artists this year. Betsy Bowen will host Thunder Bay potter Fritz Lehmberg (Early Snows Pottery) and Minneapolis fiber artist Meg Corcoran the first weekend, and Texas fused-glass artist Sheri Hargrove (fused dichroic glass jewelry and decor) throughout the entire tour. Kristi Downing (KKD Pottery) will host Catherine Schoenherr, who crafts Saami-inspired jewelry. For more information about the tour, see www.crossingbordersstudiotour.com. At the Johnson Heritage Post, a new exhibit, “Frozen Photographers” opens with a reception from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4 and runs through Nov. 10. Frozen Photographers is the name of a Facebook group formed by Duluth photographer Jamie Rabold more than two years ago with the caveat that members “MUST, from time to time, risk FROSTBITE or at least GET COLD sometimes to get their shot.” It’s a juried

North Shore photographers Don Davison, Bryan Hansel, David R. Johnson, Nace Hagemann and Christian Dalbec are among those who will have work in the show. Another fun October event in Cook County is a raku pottery experience with Duluth potters Richard Gruchalla and Carrin Rosetti. This is always a fascinating exhibit because it showcases the depth and variety of work created by Art Colony members of every age and includes glass, ceramics, oils, encaustics, watercolors, prints, fiber arts, sculpture, collage and more. The exhibit continues through Nov. 24. The Art Colony is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. By Maren Webb The Sawtooth Mountain Clinic (SMC) is launching a new community health project to increase physical activity, and it may not be what you would expect. Still your source for primary health care, the clinic is now also spearheading efforts to make streets and roads safer and more accessible for walking and biking throughout Cook County and the Grand Portage Reservation. This new project, called Moving Matters, got its start through other successful active living initiatives in Cook County, including Safe Routes to School and the Active Living Summit held in 2012. Moving Matters is building upon this initial work, with funding from the Center for Prevention at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota and in partnership with the Active Living Steering Committee, City of Grand Marais, Cook County, Grand Portage Reservation Tribal Council, the townships of Lutsen, Tofte and Schroeder, and the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT).

repeatedly shown that people who are physically active live longer and have a lower risk for heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, depression and some cancers. Moving Matters will provide opportunities for public participation to create unique solutions that result in more people walking and biking in Cook County. “Being involved with Moving Matters is an exciting opportunity for the SMC, its Board of Directors, and its staff. This project is about being active, about simply ‘moving.’ Every day the SMC staff speak to the value of moving and staying healthy. Moving Matters invites all of us to get involved with creating a community that welcomes walking and biking for health and living well,” said Rita Plourde, chief executive officer of the Sawtooth Mountain Clinic.

“We are really looking forward to working with the community and all of these important partner organizations to see how we can enhance our roads and streets as a safe place to walk or bike throughout the county,” said Kristin DeArruda Wharton, project coordinator of Moving Matters.

On Sept. 19, Moving Matters hosted its kick-off event in Grand Marais. Former U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar provided attendees with food for thought with his talk on “Active Living as You Age,” highlighting the necessity of incorporating public health into transportation planning. Community members and local leaders participated in walking and biking tours along city streets, a county road, and Highway 61. They experienced and assessed the walkability and bikeability of these well-used routes, imagining the walk/bike as an 8-year-old or an 80-year-old. If a street is safe and accessible for them, it’s likely safe and accessible for all.

The clinic is interested in roads and streets because it recognizes the strong connection between community design, transportation policies and health. If built environments are safe and pleasant places to be physically active, people will be more active.

A significant component of the Moving Matters project will be to engage the community about their experiences walking and biking in the county. This community engagement process will inform the policy process to create active living policies for the City of Grand Marais and for the county.

“For example, when the sidewalk was built along County Road 7 near the schools, all of a sudden we saw more people of all ages walking and biking in that area,” said Wharton. More people being more active more often, in turn brings health benefits and social connections that are good for individuals and communities. Studies have

Throughout the three-year project, there will be opportunities to be involved through community meetings, fun events, community survey and more. In October, Moving Matters will be conducting several pedestrian/bicyclist counts around the county, to gather data on current walking and biking levels. Volunteers will be needed in all cor-

Joe Carlson with a fresh herring fillet.

Joe still fishes Lake Superior right across from his home on Highway 61 most afternoons in the late summer and fall if it isn’t too rough, and checks his net every morning at dawn. He cleans the catch and either gives the herring to family and friends or sells to a variety of venues, including the Grand Portage Elderly Nutritional Program, Naniboujou Lodge, Bluefin Grille, Cascade Lodge or Dockside Fish Market, if they need them. “They can only use so much herring around here,” he says. In late October, he puts out more nets and brings the catch, whole, to Dockside Fish Market where it is processed for roe and fillets.

Her mother even had a photo of Joy, at six, standing next to Joe, 11, looking up at him with a big smile on her face. They were married in 1964 and had two children. Denise and Joey. Their lives changed dramatically in 1969 when Joe got a call from a friend who used to live in Grand Portage asking him if he wanted to fish salmon in Alaska.

He loves it. He grew up with it. His father and grandfather were fishermen before him, and he was put on a fishing boat when he was still a small boy. At nine, his father gave him and his brother Gene a few “raggedy” nets and a small wooden boat and told them to go fishing, he said. He’d monitor them to make sure they were safe, but they had to go out there and catch fish.

That work ethic has sustained both Joe and Joy in their partnership over the years. They ran a small sawmill together in the ‘70s and “made good money at it,” Joe said. Joy ran the skidder, he cut the trees.

A childhood picture. Front row from left, Joe Carlson, Gene Carlson. Second Row, Pete Ryden, David Carlson, Clyde Ryden. Joy is standing in back.

And Joy helps out in the fish house on Lake Superior as well as runs equipment on their fishing boat in Alaska. “I got a good worker,” Joe says. Joy laughs and then adds, “I got two hips (replaced), a knee and a shoulder, but it don’t stop me. I’ve only missed one season in Alaska since 1974.” They grew up together—Joy is a Ryden and said that the Ryden, Carlson, Spry and Oberg families spent a lot of time together when they were growing up in Grand Portage.

Microbrews Regional and Specialty Wines

Sure, Joe said, and went up there to try it out. It turned out to be an opportunity beyond his wildest dreams.

Joe jokes that fishing every day is a good way to get exercise, but one has a feeling that it’s more than that.

“It’s the best thing he ever did for us,” Joe says. “We learned to work.”

Sockeye or red salmon come to spawn in five rivers near Bristol Bay, Alaska, in late June and July, and they come in the hundreds of thousands.

207 West Wisconsin Street Grand Marais 55604 (218) 387-1513

Fishermen in small 32-foot boats ply the entrances to those rivers and pull in thousands of pounds of fish every day. The fishery is highly regulated now, but it wasn’t in the early days, Joe said.

www.thepieplacecafe.com

In those early years, Joy stayed home with the children while Joe fished in Alaska. There weren’t any women working on the boats then, and Joy had to get special permission to even come up and work with him. That’s changed now, too, she said. There are a lot of women making nets and working on the boats these days. The couple fish for Ocean Beauty cannery in Bristol Bay and catch from

50,000 to 250,000 pounds of salmon, depending on the year. “One month of work—that’s all we get to do,” Joe said. But that month is profitable. “I fish salmon so I can afford to fish herring,” he said. And you can bet he’ll be out there with his nets tomorrow.

New center line rumble strips on Hwy. 61 east of Grand Marais are loud and the locals don’t like it. JOAN FARNAM

Sleepless

on 61

New Rumble Strips Annoy Neighbors By Shawn Perich In August, people who live east of Grand Marais near State Hwy. 61 began hearing a new sound. It was a sound very unlike the cry of a gull, howl of a wolf or the whisper of wind in the pines. Instead it was a loud, abrasive noise made when the wheels of a vehicle contacted the new rumble strips cut into the highway’s center line. “When you have the windows open at night, the noise wakes you up and keeps you up,” says Bob Carter, who lives on the ridge above the highway near Five Mile Rock. “For me and some of my neighbors, the rumble strips are affecting our sleep.” Carter, who calls himself “the reluctant spokesman” of group of well over 100 local residents who are upset with the noise caused by the rumble strips, says they have contacted the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MNDOT) about their concerns. In addition to hearing the rumble strips from inside and outside of their homes, folks complain they are annoyed with the noise while doing everything from kayaking on Lake Superior to hiking the ridges a mile or more from the highway. “People live and visit here for the peace and quiet,” says Carter. “They didn’t bargain for this.” Critics of the rumble strips also worry they are not a bargain for taxpayers. The strips are cut 16 inches wide and 5/8 inch deep into the pavement. Will they collect ice during the winter and, via freezing and thawing, become potholes in the pavement? Another question is: Will the rumble strips improve safety? To an observer, the center line strips seem to be randomly placed along straightaways, with multiple gaps between the sections of strips. The strips are not placed on all curves or where accidents are known to occur. Duane Hill, MNDOT District 1 engineer in Duluth, says there is a rhyme and reason to the strip placement. Knowing the strips are loud, MNDOT has a policy of leaving up to a 400-foot gap at entrances such as intersections and driveways because there may be a home nearby. As a result, about 30 percent of the roughly 30 miles of highway between Grand Marais and the Canadian border has rumble strips. About 70 percent does not.

Unfortunately, many of the drives leading off Hwy. 61 act as quasi-frontage roads serving multiple residences. Many of those residences are highly valued properties on the Lake Superior shoreline. Carter, a real estate agent, wonders if the strips will reduce property values, saying he wouldn’t purchase his own home today with the strips in place. Since complaints about the noise are coming from places a mile or more from the highway, such as Bloomquist Mountain and Moose Valley, he wonders as well if the noise will have a negative effect on tourism.

Hill has heard these complaints and more from people living along Hwy. 61 east of Grand Marais and from places in Lake County where the strips were installed. He says the strips were added to several rural highways in northeastern Minnesota this summer, using federal traffic safety funds. Most of the complaints he hears are coming from the North Shore, where many people live along or near the highway. On the other highways, which pass through forests or lightly developed areas, the rumble strips are out of earshot of most residents.

The complaints from the North Shore are getting attention from MNDOT. The agency plans to measure the noise level at various distances from the highway and has hired a consultant to do so. Hill says the rumble strips are 10-15 decibels louder than a passing car, making nearly double the amount of noise. Another difference is that the sound of a passing car gets louder, then fades away, while the rumble strips are abrupt and simply loud. Actually, they are designed to be loud enough to wake a sleeping driver.

Highway statistics show about 50 percent of all crashes occur on rural highways, and that 50 percent of those crashes involve lane departures. Some of those lane departures are to the near shoulder and others are across the center line. Hill says it is possible the centerline rumble strips could reduce lane departure accidents. While MNDOT has general accident statistics for Hwy. 61, they did not collaborate with the State Patrol to identify locations where accidents are known to occur. As a result, those locations may or may not have rumble strips. Also, the rumble strips only cover 10 miles of the 30-mile stretch east of Grand Marais, significantly limiting their overall effectiveness for accident prevention.

MNDOT does collaborate with the state departments of Health and Public Safety on a

multi-faceted initiative called Toward Zero Deaths, which began in 2003. Over the last decade, highway deaths and serious injuries in Minnesota have significantly declined, in part due to new safety measures. The center line rumble strips are part of the Toward Zero Deaths effort. Now, MNDOT is faced with the challenge of balancing safety measures like the strips with their effect on the quality of life for people who live near the highway.

In a letter sent to Carter and others, Hill says MNDOT will be experimenting with quieter rumble designs and other design modifications over the coming year. He also notes the strips are now painted with the center stripe, making the center line more visible to drivers at night and in adverse driving conditions, because they better reflect headlights. When the highway is snow-covered, the strips should help drivers find the center line.

“We don’t know the answer, but we’re searching for it,” Hill said.

Would Hill like to have the strips near his home?

For Carter and his neighbors, the solution they seek is to have the strips filled in. While MNDOT may modify its rumble strip policy or seek ways to mitigate their annoyance, Hill cautions that whatever the agency decides todo will be applied on a statewide basis, not just to Hwy. 61. He points out that other, less obtrusive rumble strip designs exist. Last week, Hill says, MNDOT tested a new rumble strip in northwestern Minnesota which could not be heard by an engineer standing beside the highway. He says the agency is looking at several mitigation strategies to reduce noise.

“I’m not going to answer that question,” he says. “I live about a mile from a gun club and try making comparisons, but I don’t hear it at night. However, I live on a lake and passing snowmobiles will wake me up during the winter.”

1

Hill does want folks along Hwy. 61 to know MNDOT is actively engaged in the issue. “I want people to know we are listening to them and want to address their concerns,” he says.

Remembering some of the Moose I’ve Met By Shawn Perich Of all the critters you may happen upon in the North Woods, the moose is most likely to leave a lasting impression. Watching a moose from the safety and comfort of your vehicle is a passive experience. Meet one in the woods--say along a forest trail--and you get a different view. We were hiking out after fishing for brook trout in the West Branch of the Split Rock River when I met my first moose, standing in the middle of the trail, browsing on an overhanging willow. She was so intent on eating that she ignored our approach. But we couldn’t ignore the hungry cow. We had to get past her to reach our vehicle. Dad shouted at the moose and she reluctantly sauntered out of the trail and stopped about 25 yards away. A curious 12-year-old, I wanted to pause and look as we passed her, but Dad hustled me along. He knew better than to linger near an irritated moose. Moose and trout fishing go together like butter and bread. On a teenaged fly-fishing vacation, I was wading up one side of Wyoming’s Gros Ventre River while a friend worked the other side. Suddenly, he suggested I cross to his side of the river. I didn’t know why until I rounded the next bend and saw a mature bull moose standing on my bank. I crossed the river. As we walked past the bull on the opposite bank, he never looked our way, instead staring into the woods behind him. Later, when we met a man staying in a nearby campground, we learned why. The man said he’d brought his two small children within a few feet of the bull so they could see the magnificent creature. He clearly had no idea that a moose may be dangerously unpredictable. I learned about that unpredictability shortly after daybreak on a fall morning many years ago. Sneaking around a beaver pond in search of mallards, I suddenly heard what sounded like a bulldozer crashing through the young aspens. Then a bull moose burst into view. With my hunting dog at heel, I began putting some distance between me and the moose, which was about 30 yards away and looking peeved. The bull held his ground while I circled the pond, taking the long, but safe way to get the heck out of there. On another occasion, a wintering cow caught me off guard. She’d spent a week browsing on the brush just outside our bedroom window. One morning, she wasn’t there. So I went for a walk to see where she’d gone. I stumbled upon her bedded down in front of the nearby unoccupied cabin. The cow was clearly unhappy with me as she rose from her bed, so I beat a hasty retreat. I stood beside the cabin so, if necessary, I could slip around the corner and get away. The cow approached within 50 feet and stared at me. I watched her for a few minutes before leaving; keeping an eye to my back trail in case she decided to follow me. Later in the day, I returned to see if the moose was still around. I got no further than the corner of the cabin where I’d been standing. The cow had circled around and approached the cabin from another direction, almost certainly looking for me. My tracks in the snow had been obliterated by moose hoof prints. It was an instructive and somewhat chilling lesson in moose behavior.

14 NORTH SHORE HWY 61 OCTOBER 2013

When you meet a moose, or two, the encounter is always memorable. | PAUL SUNDBERG Another lesson came not from a moose, but from an old moose biologist. “For a moose, offense is defense,” he told me. This makes sense. Wolves eat moose. To survive, healthy moose can successfully fight and deter an attacking wolf pack. Thus they are likely to respond the same way to whatever else they perceive as a threat, including humans. Perhaps this explains the behavior of a bull I met while deer hunting a few years ago. Or maybe he was just in a bad mood. The bull responded to a grunt call intended to attract a whitetail buck, though I didn’t realize it at the time. He walked directly toward me and suddenly was too close for comfort, standing broadside, somewhat menacingly, about 20 yards away. I had a feeling the encounter wouldn’t end well. Since I was carrying a deer rifle, I contemplated shooting the bull, but decided against it. I waved my arms and told the moose to go away. Instead, he rushed forward and stopped. His ears were laid back, the hair on the back of his neck was up and he was wild-eyed. Now the moose was very close and appeared ready to charge. I was standing behind the trunk of a large aspen. Again I contemplated shooting the bull, but decided the light, .243 caliber would not make an instantaneous kill. I couldn’t afford taking that chance. Instead, I fired a shot over the animal’s head, triggering (pardon the pun) a charge. Head down, the moose hit the aspen I was standing behind, making a loud crack I’ll never forget. As I quick-stepped to keep the tree between us,

the moose tried to reach around for me with a foreleg. Then, just as suddenly as the charge began, the moose was gone.

It took me a moment gather my wits. Curious, I then followed the moose’s tracks in the wet leaves. I jumped it from a balsam thicket within 40 yards, where it appeared to be waiting for me. It didn’t go very far before stopping in another thicket. Deciding not to press my luck, I headed off in the opposite direction—wiser and with a good story to tell.

Actually, only a handful of the moose I’ve met seemed dangerous. Most were like the young cow that joined me for an evening of fly-fishing on a secluded pond. She found me standing amidst the water lilies she intended to eat for dinner. She hung around within casting distance for an hour or so, patiently waiting for me to leave. I talked softly to the moose and she seemed to listen, which is more than I can say for some people.

I think about that cow moose and the many others I’ve met, while wandering in the woods these days. It’s been five years or more since I last met a moose. I still find tracks in the mud while out walking and on rare occasions see a moose cross the road ahead of my vehicle. But moose are now so few that chance encounters, once a common occurrence, are unlikely. But the moose I’ve met have left a lasting impression. And I’m grateful for that.

KITCHEN FIRES: U.S. Fire Departments responded to an estimated annual average of 156,600 cooking-related fires between 2007-2011, resulting in 400 civilian deaths, 5,080 civilian injuries and $853 million in direct damage. Two of every five home fires start in the kitchen. Unattended cooking was a factor in 34% of reported home cooking fires. Two-thirds of home cooking fires started with ignition of food or other cooking materials. Ranges accounted for the 58% of home cooking fire incidents. Ovens accounted for 16%. Children under five face a higher risk of non-fire burns associated with cooking than being burned in a cooking fire. Microwave ovens are one of the leading home products associated with scald burn injuries not related to fires. Nearly half (44%) of the microwave oven injuries seen at emergency rooms in 2011 were scald burns. Clothing was the item first ignited in less than 1% of home cooking fires, but these incidents accounted for 16% of the cooking fire deaths. SMOKE ALARMS: Almost two-thirds (62%) of reported home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in reported home fires in half. In fires considered large enough to activate the smoke alarm, hardwired alarms operated 92% of the time, while battery powered alarms operated only 77% of the time.

“Each year, my son Phil, his wife, Lara, and grandchildren Sophie and Quin, come to Grand Marais for the MEA weekend in mid-October, the last hurrah of summer. The highlight of their visit each year is Moose Madness. Over the years, they’ve participated in most of the events, from stories at the library to writing Moosey haiku. Probably the most enjoyable event when they were younger was the effort to find the moose in each retail store, record the words the moose held and untangle the sentence the word made. As they have grown older, focus has shifted a little to the medallion clues. We thought we had it nailed last year, but, alas, we were way off. We’ve done a little of the geo-caching as well. Moose Madness provides a fun, light structure to the weekend and gives the kids something to look forward to each year. It is delightful.” —Jim Boyd

The Amazing Alces Alces, The Moose! Scientific name: Alces Alces – Male is a bull, female is a cow, and the young are calves.

The moose is the largest member of the deer family (Cervidae), and its relatives are elk, white-tailed deer and caribou. The name “moose” probably came from the Algonquin words “mus” or “moos,” meaning “eater of twigs.” There are four subspecies of moose found in North America—alces gigas (Alaska Yukon), alces Anderson (the largest, Western Canada), alces Americanus (local, and eastern Canada), and alces shiras (Yellowstone and other high altitudes).

Appearance Moose have dark brown, reddish or almost black hair coloration, depending on age, gender and species. They also have a flap of hair-covered skin under their chin area called a bell or dewlap, most pronounced on bulls. Antlers

Only the bulls have antlers, which they use to push other bulls around during the rut, to impress other moose as a sign of fitness, health and age, and to mark their territory by thrashing them around in trees and shrubs. Every year, around December, the antlers are shed and new ones begin to grow. The sheds are a great source of calcium for mice and other small forest dwellers. Moose antlers are palmate, meaning they are palm, or hand-shaped, but what a hand! The largest antlers usually have about 30 “tines,” or points, a spread of about 4 – 5 ft., weigh about 60 pounds, and grow about an inch per day! Each time antlers be-

gin growing again, they are covered in velvet, a soft skin that covers the antlers and keeps blood flowing to them for growth. Just before mating, the skin dries out and the moose scrape their antlers on trees and shrubs to shed that skin, leaving “rubs”.

While you may encounter a moose just about anywhere, the best places to look for them are in clearings, where they browse on young saplings, and near swamps or wetlands, where they find both food and cover. Here are three driving routes which pass through moose habitat. While each route includes gravel roads, all can be easily traversed with an automobile. GRACE

Moose are frequently seen along Cook County’s extensive network of forest roads. The best time to look for them is early and late in the day, when they are most active. Generally, moose are more abundant a few miles inland from Lake Superior, which is why they are infrequently seen along Highway 61.
