A New Sled Dog Race in Town By Joan Farnam The Gichigami Express Sled Dog Race will launch this year on Jan. 6-8 with a $25,000 purse underwritten by the Grand Portage Band. As of press time, 25 top mushers will compete for the prize.

“We’re expecting mushers from all over the United States,” said Matthew Brown, rès- who is the race marshall for the Gichigaor mi Express.

Visit

Alaskan Ryan Redington, for example, whose grandfather, Joe, is called the Father of the Iditarod, is coming down with his dogs to run the race.

Erin Redington, Ryan’s wife, wrote in an e-mail that they’re excited to come down. “It’s great to support new dog sled e races,” she wrote. “And it is exciting to most race against/see how we will do against a ce different set of mushers than we usually les compete against.”

It will be an exciting time, said Jack ators Stone, who is on the board of this newly ms

formed nonprofit. The Gichigami Express will be viewer-friendly and educational, as well as a great opportunity for residents and visitors to celebrate winter and the tradition of mushing on the North Shore. Although the Gichigami Express is a

nter new sled dog race for the North Shore,

it also has historic roots, Most everyone

iders knows about John Beargrease, who carand ried mail with a dog team up and down Plein the North Shore in the late 1800s. But sled y dogs were used much earlier than that, d or Stone said. re.

“They were used in the early days to bring furs to Grand Portage,” he said. “They were part of the economy up there.”

Sled dog teams from all over the country will participate in the first annual Gichigami Express Sled Dog Race Jan. 6-8. Photo above was taken by Travis Novitsky at the start of one of The Passage races, sponsored by the Grand Portage Band several years ago.

And sled dogs have continued to be part of tribal culture, said Beth Drost, a tribal member who is the race director. She grew up running sled dogs with her father, Curtis Gagnon. Drost was also the race director for the Grand Portage Passage, a sled dog race held in Grand Portage several years ago. So it is fitting that the first leg of the race start at Grand Portage, she said. The event begins with a potlatch dinner on Saturday night at the Grand Portage Lodge & Casino. There will be an exchange of gifts between the children on the reservation and the mushers, as well as a traditional ceremony. The first day, Sunday, the mushers will start from Mineral Center at 9 a.m. and finish at Hungry Jack Lake Lodge. They’ll pack up their dogs and equipment and transport them to Trail Center, where there will be a big bonfire and a banquet outdoors under tents. There will also be a presentation about sled dogs and the Gunflint Trail. The next morning, the race starts at Windigo Lodge at 9 a.m. The mushers will swing north and loop south to finish at Devil Track Landing. That night, there will be a dinner at the American Legion in Grand Marais. The presentation that night will be about the history of sled dogs in Grand Marais. The Cook County Historical Society has also prepared an exhibit on the importance of sled dogs in the county. The race will start on the third day behind ISD 166 in Grand Marais, again at 9 a.m.

“We hope to take three kids out of the junior and senior classes on the Saturday before the race and let them work with the vets during check-in,” Stone said. The race will finish in Grand Portage between 3-6 p.m. with the awards dinner scheduled for that night. The board (Stone, Norman Deschampe, Beth Drost, Odin Jorgenson and Sarah Hamilton) has been working hard to make this a spectacular event, Stone said, including lining up a series of sponsors as well as organizing an on-line auction. “Our vision is to bring more people into Cook County during the winter time,” he said. The race has been organized so that it will easy for everyone to watch. “In the Beargrease, we don’t get to watch a start or finish in Cook County,” Stone said. “This is a completely different kind of race. You can see as much or as little as you want.” And spectators can schedule other activities during the day, including skiing, dogsledding, snowshoeing and more. The only potential glitch at this point is whether we get enough snow, Stone said. At this point, everyone is keeping heir fingers crossed, but they have two possible other dates in mind. Meanwhile, the planning goes on. “If mother nature cooperates, we’re going to have a great race,” Brown said. For more information and the latest updates, visit www.gichigamiexpress.com.

by Joan Farnam New Year’s Eve is coming up very soon, and there are lots of events scheduled for the days leading up to 2013. First is the annual Christmas Caroled Dinners at Naniboujou Lodge, one of the iconic events of the holiday season. The dinners will be held on Thursday, Dec. 27, and Friday, Dec. 28. The Muus Family Carolers sing during dinner. Reservations are required. For more information and reservations, call 387-2688. Michael Monroe continues his New Year Log Cabin Concerts this year as well. Claudia Schmidt will be his guest on Dec. 28-29 and Michael Johnson will sing with Monroe Dec. 30-31. For more information and reservations, call 387-2919. The events begin at 7 p.m. Earth, Wind & Todd play at the Gunflint Tavern on Friday night and Papa Charlie’s on Saturday night, while The Splinters play at the Gunflint Tavern on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 29 & 30.

Nace Hagemann’s latest book, “Another Year on The Gunflint Trail” will be available this month.

New Year’s Eve will be hopping all over the county. Lutsen Mountains holds its annual New Year’s Festival with a variety of live music, a Torchlight Parade and Fireworks and the DJ, D’Angelo, “throws down” a mad mix of great party music at Papa Charlie’s starting at 9:30 p.m. A little further east, Pete Kavanaugh will be playing at the Cascade Lodge Pub from 8-10 p.m., Timmy Haus plays for a New Year’s Party at Devil Track Resort at 9 p.m. Cook County’s Most Wanted plays at the Gunflint Tavern at 8:30 p.m., Earth, Wind and Todd play at the American Legion, and Sh-Boom plays at the Grand Portage Lodge & Casino at 9 p.m. Naniboujou Lodge will serve a special New Year’s Eve Dinner at 7 p.m. that night as well. Call 387-2688 for reservations. There are special events happening on New Year’s Day, too, with a New Year’s Brunch at Devil Track Resort. Gary Croft & Friends play the Gunflint Tavern at 8 p.m. One of the very cool things about this time of year is the wide variety of live music by local musicians we can find at venues all over the county. Papa Charlie’s, Moguls Grille, Bluefin Grille, the Poplar River Pub at Lutsen Resort, the Cascade Lodge Pub and the Gunflint Tavern, all feature live music this month, ranging from small, intimate performances of blues and folk to classical music. Local musicians include Gordon Thorne, Timmy Haus, Eric Frost, Briand Morrison, The Sivertones, Jim & Michelle Miller, Joe Paulik, Pete Kavanaugh and Bump Blomberg.

p.m. All invited. Here’s a scoop: Sivertson Gallery has installed a giclee printer in its frame shop, giving the gallery an opportunity to craft high quality prints of its artist’s work. Owner Jan Sivertson and Mark Tessier, who is a photographer and technical consultant to the gallery on this project, are really excited about the new direction the gallery is taking. “We can provide great North Shore regional images for a great price,” Sivertson said. “For years and years, artists have come up with great images, but they get to sell only once.” Now, with the new printer, the gallery can create high quality prints on canvas paper that come very close to the original.

Above: Jan Sivertson, right, and Mark Tessier hold up one of many the giclee prints that they are creating for Sivertson Gallery. Left: Photoshop expert, Mark Tessier, works on matching colors on one of Liz Sivertson’s paintings. Photos by Joan Farnam

It’s also broadened the scope of images the gallery can offer. Sivertson’s father, Howard, Sivertson, for example, has been painting for the last 25 years, and most of his paintings have been sold. However, Howard made good quality photographs of the paintings before they left his studio, and the gallery will be able to make prints of these iconic works so they’re available once more. Other artists’ work can be revived as well, she said. It’s just a great new direction, she added.

Others include Mary Bue, James Moors, the Gin Strings, Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank, the Sam Miltich Trio, Jon Kallberg, the Silver City Millers, Ruch Mattson & Germaine Gamberling, the Shane Martin Band, Scott Fraser, Jim McGowan, Annie Enneking and Saint Anyway. Also, Papa Charlie’s is holding a Monday night Singer/Songwriter Series as well. And its Snowball Music Festival Jan. 9-12 features a variety of bands, including Wookie Foot, which plays Papa Charlie’s on Jan. 12. And don’t forget the Classical Music Series at Bluefin Bay Grille on Sunday nights. Check our calendar for dates and times.

There are lots of opportunities to just jam and play with friends, too. Bump Blomberg hosts an Open Mic at Papa Charlie’s on Tuesday nights, and Cascade Lodge Pub has a Locals Music Night every third Thursday at 7 p.m. This month it will be Jan. 17. And the Chicago Bay Marketplace in Hovland hosts its Monday Night Acoustic Jam on Jan. 7 at 5

The gallery also plans to work with local photographers to print their work as well. This has opened the doors for photographers to participate in the Winter Arts Festival hosted by the Grand Marais Art Colony at the end of January. Now, photographers can participate in the Winter Plein Air event, shooting winter scenes throughout the county for a week, and then have their images printed and framed for

the show, which opens with a reception at the Art Colony at 7 p.m. Feb. 1. The Winter Plein Air event is one of the only winter outdoor painting events in the country. Artists can choose to stay at Menogyn, giving them ready access to the outdoors every day. The Winter Arts Festival also includes a Snow Carving Symposium, where artists transform simple blocks of snow into wonderful carvings. The carvings will be hosted by local businesses throughout Cook County and will be on display Feb. 1-10 (weather permitting). Dance comes back to the Grand Marais Art Colony

to pursue her passion and she is doing so much for the community. I’ve discovered that I love to dance, and I especially love dancing under Lenna’s teaching.” Stever, who is Heidi Sobanja’s daughter, was born in New Mexico but moved here when she was youngster. She graduated from Cook County High School and went on to study English literature at the University of Minnesota. But she never forgot her love of dance, and took dance classes at the university. “I’ve got a lot of experience dancing as an amateur dancer, but don’t have any professional experience,” she said. When she studied with Moe, Stever taught classes for Moe as her skills developed, so when Stever decided to stay in Grand Marais last winter, she started the Cook County Dance Workshop to bring dance back to the community. And this winter, she offered the classes again. They’ve been a real success. In all, 45 students, age 5 and up, have enrolled.

wood floors of the Art Colony, Stever said.

A dance tradition is continuing in Grand Marais, thanks to the enthusiasm and dedication of Lenna Stever, a talented dancer and choreographer. Every week the Founders Hall at the Grand Marais Art Colony hosts dancers of every age, practicing and learning tap, jazz and ballet with Stever. Younger students, from 5-7, are taught by Christine Curtis, who is also Stever’s student. It’s a special treat to be teaching on the sprung-

“This is the first building I learned to dance in,” she said, noting that she took dance from Rene Moe in that space for eight years. Moe hasn’t taught dance in Cook County for a while, and Stever’s decision to start teaching last winter has been embraced with enthusiasm by all her students. Abby Tofte, for example, says she really loves taking the classes from her friend. “Here’s is a story of a local girl trying to create a living through the art she loves,” Tofte wrote in a recent e-mail. “She has created an avenue

“Dance is very fulfilling on multiple levels,” Stever said. “It’s athletic and exercise and gets your body doing a lot of physical things. It’s also artistic.” Dance also helps build self-esteem and confidence, she said. ““Learning a new skill always boosts your confidence. Your body is your instrument. There’s something empowering about that.” Dance is especially wonderful for gloomy winter days, she added. “This can be a hard place to spend the winter, especially if you’re effected by seasonal affective disorder. Having endorphins in your body from all that physical activity wards off depression” she said, so dance is a really creative way to stay active and feel good about your body and your life in general.”

Lenna Stever

And there’s a special perk for Stever when she teaches dance classes, she can choreograph to her heart’s content. “Part of the reason to do this was to exercise that part of my creative nature,” she said. “I’m currently choreographing eight different routines. Christine ( Curtis, who is teaching the youngest students) is doing two.” At this point, it’s too early to say whether she will organize a public dance recital, but it certainly is possible, Stever said. “There is a performance element to dance that you don’t want to give up. I do know that performing often pushes dancers to do their very best. And, it can be a lot of fun.” Stay tuned for this one. Meanwhile, Stever will be teaching another six-week winter session starting in January. For more information, call 370-2423 or steve0289@umn.edu.

Trail Center is a destination for almost everyone who travels the Gunflint Trail. “Because of where we are and what we do, we get everybody,” said Sarah Hamilton, who, with her sister, Anna, owns Trail Center Restaurant and Lodge. Blueberry pickers, ice fishermen, cabin owners, campers, visitors out for a drive – you name it – almost everyone stops at the beautiful log building halfway up the Trail. If they follow their noses, they’ll head on into the dining room and enjoy its tasty fare as well as the full bar. (Esquire Magazine has named the bar in the Top 10 bars in America.)

customers.

“We’re casual people,” Sarah said. “Our only goal is to have a place where the food is good, affordable and everyone is welcome.”

“My goal is to have them delicious,” she said. She makes everything from soups to shrimp Alfredo, turkey and dressing, scrambled eggs with dried morel mushrooms, to name a few, and she’s not done yet.

Steaks and shrimp, homemade Yorkshire pudding with prime rib, walleye, specialty sandwiches, some of the best burgers in the county, as well as a big vegetarian menu, are featured at n sheTrail Center. ph to They serve breakfasts and are open seven days a week, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. during the week, 8 a.m. erciseto 10 p.m. on weekends. They remembered this really good customer who used to come into the restaurant and tell them, “If you ever buy a restaurant, I’ll hire you two as managers.” Sarah laughed when she tells this story. “I told him I’d never work so hard for someone else. I’ll either be an owner or I won’t do it.” A year later, SkyPort came on the market.

Sarah also has developed a line of dried foods called Camp Chow that is growing as well.

Sarah asked their friend if he’d back them in the purchase. He said he’d put up half the money. “That sweet man was Dave Beattie,” Sarah said. As the sisters talked, they realized they wanted to live further up the Trail, so they asked the Backstroms if they were interested in selling the business. “Yes!” was the answer, and the deal was struck. Two years later, they bought Beattie out with a loan from the Grand Marais State Bank. “He went on to buy Borderland and changed the name to Moosehorn. It’s now called the Cross River Lodge,” Sarah said. Beattie died a few years ago, but the sisters will never forget his generosity in those lean years. Trail Center’s business skyrocketed once the sisters took over. They decided up front that they would keep the doors open all year long. with short closings in late fall and early spring. “We needed full-time jobs and so did our employees,” she

“I tell my staff every new adventure ... this is your health insurance,” Sarah said. “That is my goal -- to get the staff health insurance.” She also wants to keep living and working on the Gunflint Trail.

Summer is crazy busy. “We feed close to 10,000 people a month,” she said, “About 200-400 people a day. Unbelievable.” “Winter is fickle. Even if have we snow, it’s still nothing like summer,” she said, but there’s enough business to keep staff employed, 25 in the summer, 15 in winter. The Basics of Probiotics By Kelly Schoenfelder

Not all probiotics are created equal.

T

Since probiotics are not FDA-approved or regulated, not everything that is labeled as being probiotic is actually beneficial.

here are good bacteria and there are bad bacteria, and we often hear about the latter. But as it turns out, focusing on gaining and keeping a healthy amount of good bacteria in your system could be beneficial to your overall health. Consuming healthy live bacteria, or probiotics, is emerging as a possible way to maintain that balance. Before you go out and buy, however, here are some things to know about probiotics: They could help more than just your gastrointestinal tract. The benefits of taking probiotics go beyond just our stomach and intestine.

“Their primary use seems to be in the GI tract, but their benefit does seem to extend,” George Badeaux, Arrowhead Pharmacy pharmacist, said. “There’s good evidence that they seem to reduce the instance of vaginal yeast infections and there’s less evidence that they can reduce the instance of cold and flu.” While more research is needed, preliminary findings indicate they also might help the immune system. “There’s still a lot we don’t know about the world of probiotics, but it looks like they’re studying some ways that probiotics can help immune function, so people with allergies and even for people with eczema,” local nurse practitioner Lisa Zallar said. You do not need a prescription to take probiotics. Many products are available in pill form over the counter, and they can help when you need a more concentrated dose of good bacteria. “I would choose to take a stronger tabular form if I was taking an antibiotic, for example, or for diarrhea or if I was coming down with a cold,” Badeaux said. However, if you choose to take a probiotic supplement when you’re on antibiotics, it is important to remember to leave time in between the medication and the supplement. “Since people can choose to take them on their own and they might not talk to a pharmacist, they should make sure to take the probiotic two or more hours away from the antibiotic,” Badeaux said.

“There is no oversight as to what is in the products that are available, so you never know for sure what you’re buying,” Zallar said. “So for people that are looking to use probiotics, they really need to make sure they’re talking to a pharmacist about what they would recommend.” Considering the content of one probiotic versus another is also important. “My preferred product that I stock in the pharmacy is Florajen 3, because it has three different organisms,” Badeaux said. “I recommend that, unless, say, you are specifically taking it for a vaginal yeast infection, then you would want one with just acidophilus.” We’re still not sure how beneficial they are. While research has shown that these good bacteria are not harmful to the body, not enough research has been done to know exactly how helpful they are. “I think it is something that is showing a lot of promise as far as treatment of certain gastrointestinal illnesses, but there is still a lot to learn,” Zallar said. “It is good to talk to your health care provider before you take them, since we don’t know how beneficial probiotics are yet.”

They do not just come in pill form. In fact, probiotics can be found in foods that you might already eat regularly. “My personal practice is to eat yogurt on a regular basis, because of the probiotic content,” Badeaux said. “Probiotics can also be found in kefir, a beverage that has a higher concentration of good bacteria.” However, it’s important to read the labels of these foods if you’re taking them for probiotic benefit, because some types of food processing can change the probiotic content of the product. “Pasteurization can kill those good bacteria, so you want to make sure that the products have the live active cultures,” Zallar said. “Dairy products are kind of the best way to get those probiotics.”

Plans, Hopes for 2013 from Cook County Leaders By Jim Boyd We asked a number of Cook County leaders in various sectors what they hoped to accomplish in 2013. Here is a sampling of comments from those who responded.

Larry “Bear” Carlson, Sally Nankivell, executive director, Cook County Visitors Bureau

“The most important goal for the CCVB in 2013 is to realize the full potential of our county-wide destination-marketing collaboration by launching a new county-wide website. The site will feature a searchable, Google-based map and “smart content”, which is information that is customized based upon the visitor’s interests. We will also produce our first county-wide destinationmarketing brochure. We are excited to be moving forward with these major steps in telling the story of the extraordinary Cook County experience as a whole while continuing to celebrate the unique personalities and attributes of our individual communities.”

mayor, Grand Marais

“I hope we get the Community Center well on its way to completion, even though it is a county project. Our No.1 capital project is relocating the city garage and electrical storage facility from the Rec Park area. Once we’ve moved them, the DNR will put in a pretty substantial boat ramp and parking area. Then once the Community Center is up, we will be responsible for demolition of the existing swimming pool. Also, we want to complete the community connection into the Rec Park, a nice pathway into the park from downtown. We’ve got it way down in terms of budget. Hope to have it completed before the tourism season starts. If we can accomplish all of that in 2013, it will be all we can afford.”

Joe Buttweiler, Debbie Benedict, executive director, WTIP Community Radio

“On April 28, 2013, WTIP will celebrate 15 years of broadcasting. We look forward to hosting various community events in celebration of our birthday. During this year, our loyal volunteers and staff will work to set a 5- to 10-year vision for the future of local radio for our community. “We will again co-host the 10th annual North Shore Dragon Boat Festival with our partners, North House Folk School and North Shore Health Care Foundation, as well as our sixth annual Radio Waves Music Festival.

“We are due to replace our aging transmitter and antenna located MarkDConsulting LLC above Grand Marais, and will be seeking funding for the $100,000 project. And we are committed to paying off the loans for our building Licensed Technology Systems Contractor: data, video, audio, & telephone cables  Licensed Technology Contractor: data, video, audio, so weSystems can focus all our resources on & telephone cablescreating great programming that Computer Sales & Service • Serving Business and Residential Customers  Computer Sales & Service reflects the North Shore.”

director, member services & broadband projects, Arrowhead Electric Cooperative, Inc.

“The goals for 2013 really begin to delve into the best parts about our broadband project – establishing connectivity to Duluth so we can begin testing voice and internet services. Following a testing period we will then be able to begin launching services and scheduling home installations! At some point in 2013 we’ll need to select a video (TV) product and begin its implementation too. “One of the biggest challenges for Arrowhead will be to have our internal process and member service pieces in place. We take great pride in being a locally owned cooperative that provides immediate service to our members in both the best of times and the worst of times. With a mere 13 employees, we have our work cut out for us. But we are excited to begin offering service(s) and being one of many in the quality of life for our residents.”

Kimber Wraalstad,

Charles Skinner, Position? Cook County Chamber of Commerce

“The new Chamber is currently in the process of completing the steps necessary to launch the organization. The mission of the new chamber is to achieve countywide goals and represent all businesses and residents from all sectors of the county. Steps underway currently include filing the organizational documents and securing the necessary funding. We have secured over half the needed funding but still have some work to do on this front. Once the rest of the funding is secured, we will be in a position to form the board of directors and proceed with interviews and the hiring of an executive director. Our goal for 2013 will be to complete these steps so that the new chamber and its executive director can begin work on behalf of Cook County. “A countywide organization speaking on behalf of all businesses from all sectors has been needed for decades. There is much work to do, and the new board of directors will have no shortage of priorities moving forward our individual communities.”

Sue Hakes, commissioner, Cook County Board

administrator, Cook County North Shore Hospital and Care Center

Greg Wright,

“Continue to participate in state and federal quality initiatives to verify the quality services provided at Cook County North Shore Hospital and Care Center. Continue to analyze all our costs and provision of service so that we are as cost efficient and effective as possible to respect the support of our community. Continue to plan for building redesign so that we are providing care in a way that is good for our patients and residents, good for our employees and positions ourselves for the future.”

“Sharpen your saw. Strike while the iron is hot. Measure twice, cut once. Clearly, the world of traditional craft is filled with abundant sayings that all offer direction for the coming year, not to mention inspiration for a lifetime. North House’s vibrant mission and programs are thriving. Steady as she goes! [This] is actually what we ARE focusing on, being keenly focused on what we do best and making sure the tools we use are truly making the best things happen for North House.”

Planning to $ell? Suggestions for Making a House Look Its Best By Shawn Perich For you, 2013 is the year. You take a deep breath and make the decision to put your home or property on the market this spring. You know it’s a buyer’s market out there, so what can you do to make your home look its best? “The first thing to do is clean up all of the clutter, both inside and outside,” says John Oberholtzer of Timber Wolff Realty in Lutsen. “Seeing clutter has psychological impact on buyers.” Don’t think you can hide your clutter in a closet. Grand Marais Coldwell Banker real estate agent Harry Drabik says most buyers really look at the amount of closet space in a home. “You should be able to see the back wall of the closet when you open the door,” says Drabik. You don’t want clothes billowing out when you open the door or a bunch of shoes on the floor.” Both men say fresh paint and clean carpets are important steps in preparing a house for

sale. You should also make sure any little “fix it” projects are complete. A turn-off for buyers, especially in the present market, is a house they perceive will need a lot of work and expense. A “fixer-upper” will be a very tough sell. However, Drabik cautioned sellers about going to unnecessary expense for improvements the buyer may not want, anyway. You may be able to clean and stretch a carpet, rather than replace it. Kitchen cabinets may be just fine is they are cleaned up or freshly painted. If a home has a small flaw, don’t hide it. Instead, be honest about a problem, such as past water damage, so the buyer knows it’s been corrected. That said, Oberholtzer points out that kitchen and bathroom improvements can spruce of the appearance of a home. Tearing out a carpet to expose the hardwood floor beneath is probably better than buying a new carpet. He says hardwood floors and tile generally make a better impression on buyers than carpeting. Be aware, as well, that carpet often has a musty odor, which may have buyers worrying about mold. Accent what you really like about the house,

Need Help Remodeling? Drabik says. If there is a comfortable place to sit and read, draw attention to it. Make the house seem inviting to the buyer. You can have some art on the walls, but avoid family pictures, which make it look like your home. Leave a fair amount of blank space on the walls, where buyers can envision putting their own paintings and pictures. Outside, do what you can to give the house an attractive appearance. Trim shrubs and hedges near the house so you can better see it. Perhaps you can paint the doors red, which is considered an inviting color.
