The museum, located in the former Chik-Wauk Lodge building, presents the story of the Gunflint Trail people through murals, hands-on exhibits and video displays. This year’s temporary exhibit focuses on the history of ChikWauk Lodge, which operated from the 1930s – 1980. Outside, the Gneiss Lake hiking trail will be added to the hiking trail network. Volunteers have cleared the approximately one mile trail, which was closed after the 1999 Blowdown storm, to the Blueberry Hill overlook, where hikers find vistas of Saganaga and Seagull Lakes and the surrounding wilderness.

In Flanders Field

jack would never reveal his favorite fishing hole, but just ask him where he financed his new truck

By Jim Boyd Soon Cook County residents will begin seeing those small, artificial red paper and plastic poppies appearing in stores. Most know they have something to do with Memorial Day, but details of the poppy observance have grown hazy for some, were never known by others. That is unfortunate. Wearing a red poppy on Memorial Day is a humble expression of honor and respect, never dimmed by time, for those who have given their lives in wartime service to America. In the beginning, it did not involve Americans at all. It began after an extremely bloody World War I battle near the Flemish town of Ypres in 1915. Ypres marked the first wide-scale use of chlorine gas by German forces, inflicted on the Canadians who formed the core of the Allied force at Ypres.

Nothing makes a Northlander talk like getting a great deal with great service. At North Shore Federal, we’ll give you plenty to talk about. A great rate, on the spot financing and service fit for a fishing tale. Catch a great deal on your next vehicle purchase.

It was springtime. A Canadian doctor, Lt. Col. John McCrae, had just officiated at the funeral of his friend and fellow soldier Alexis Helmer. As McCrae contemplated the horrors of the Ypres battlefield, he was struck by how quickly red poppies bloomed around the graves of the dead. A poet, McCrae captured the scene and his thoughts with a poem he titled, “In Flanders Field:”

Because if you’re up here, you belong here.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. It took a while, but “In Flanders Field” eventually caught the world’s imagination and led to the tradition of using red paper poppies, now frequently plastic, to honor the fallen of all conflicts. In the United Kingdom and many countries of the Commonwealth, this is done on Nov. 11, Armistice Day. In the United States, it is done on Memorial Day. On Memorial Day 2012, the Dead still lie in Flanders Field and in similar fields scattered the world over. They lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, loved and were loved and now they lie. The red poppies symbolize that we continue to keep the faith.

Take Mom Out on Mother's Day By Ada Igoe Circle Sunday, May 13 on your calendar. That’s Mother’s Day and it’s just around the corner. Start planning for how you’ll be celebrating one of the most important women in your life this year. Here are some celebration ideas Mom will enjoy.

Take Mom Out

Mother’s Day and brunch are practically synonymous. Plenty of restaurants around the county offer a special Mother’s Day brunch. After you’ve had your fill of eggs, bacon, muffins, waffles, and more, consider taking Mom and the gang on a leisurely hike. Enjoy springtime scenery along Oberg Mountain, Devil’s Kettle, Magnetic Rock Trail, the Superior Hiking Trail or Mt. Josephine. If a hike’s not quite your speed, simply stroll along the lakeshore and practice your rock-skipping skills.

Picnic

Greenhouse Visits

Celebrate Mom and spring by taking her on a tour of the local greenhouses. Instead of getting Mom a floral bouquet that will droop before the week’s out, let Mom pick out some flowers (or vegetables) that will brighten her yard all summer long. That said, if Mom doesn’t have much of a green thumb or any garden space, she certainly won’t turn down a bouquet of flowers.

Relax

way to celebrate Mom’s special day and she just might get her treat for free. After ice cream, you can take Mom over to the Johnson Heritage Post, where Marie Westerman’s fiber arts are on display. The JHP is open 1– 4 p.m. on Mother’s Day.

Give Her a Call

If you’re not near your mom this Mother’s Day, call to wish her a happy day. If you plan to send her a “Happy Mother’s Day” card, go one step beyond finding, and signing, the perfect, witty greeting card and actually write her a letter to slip inside.

Mom just might like some time to herself this Mother’s Day. Book her an appointment with a massage therapist, schedule some time for her to spend at Waves of Superior Spa or Sweetgrass Cove, or sign her up for a class from Chez Jude, North House, or the Art Colony.

Get Crafty

Not up for brunch? Pack up a picnic If Mom quilts, crafts, knits, or croand head to Mom’s favorite spot in chets, surprise her with a basket full the woods or on the beach. North Shore Dairy Keeps on Trucking By Ada Igoe In the North Shore Dairy office behind the laundromat in “uptown Grand Marais,” the fax machine whirs out orders. While two employees juggle phone calls, another employee finishes up an invoice, then rushes off on an ice cream delivery. Since 1968, this busy operation has been distributing dairy and other food goods to most of Cook County, and they’re not showing any signs of slowing down. “It’s a lot of work,” said owner Carline Gresczyk, laughing. Two times a week, on Tuesday and Friday, North Shore Dairy receives a tractor trailer filled with dairy and other food products. The trailer is left at the Dairy, and the truck driver hauls away the empty trailer from the last delivery. Then Gresczyk and her employees, including 14-year veteran Ed Straub, set to work breaking down the trailer.

“Some of the milk goes into our cooler, but all of the food goes into the white [delivery] truck. Then that’ll go back out to the West End, or up to Grand Portage,” she said. The Dairy services the entire Cook County shore, all the way from the Canadian border to Tofte, although they no longer go up the Gunflint Trail. They deliver to nearly every grocery store, restaurant, and gas station in the county. The milk they deliver comes from Wisconsin and Minnesota farms and is bottled at Franklin Foods in Duluth. Despite their name, the Dairy offers much more than just milk. Through Reinhart Foods in Rogers, Minn., they offer a full line of food products, including produce, fresh meats, canned goods, paper products, equipment—basically, “everything you could ever want,” said Gresczyk. The busy distributing business of today had its beginnings on a farm along Cook County Road 7. Carline’s father, John Sjoberg, raised dairy cows, and during the 1950s and 60s he

Both younger son Greg and husband Pete assist on delivery days. “I want my employees to know that I very much appreciate all the work they do,” said Gresczyk. Through the Dairy’s more than 40 years of business, Gresczyk said they’ve made a lot of friends and she’s appreciative of community support for the business. “The local businesses have been very good to us and supported us,” she said. “There are so many other vendors out there. We’re just a little Mom-and-Pop, family owned business, and the local businesses have really helped us out.” Local support has allowed the North Shore Dairy to thrive and grow, and Gresczyk said she makes a point of shopping locally to keep small business like her own going strong. “We don’t go to Duluth and buy our groceries,” she said. “That’s one thing I really do stress is buy what you can locally.”

Are you interested in getting weekly deliveries of local, organically grown fresh vegetables direct from the farmer this summer?

Members purchase annual shares in a CSA, and a bag, box or cooler full of fresh produce is provided to them each week during the growing season.

Well, you’re in luck, because each of the three CSAs which grow vegetables for Cook County residents are still taking subscriptions for the upcoming season. CSA, or Community Supported Agriculture, is admittedly an awkward term, says Nick Wharton who, with his wife, Kristin, run the Good Nature Farm. “It’s an attempt to capture the idea that the customers, or members, are directly supporting the farmer,” he said. “There’s no middle man. Zipping

along at Gunflint Lodge

By Jim Boyd Bruce Kerfoot has bit of extra zip in his carriage this spring, and for good reason: Construction soon will start on the Gunflint Lodge owner’s new “canopy tour” attraction. He’s as chuffed as a chickadee at the prospect. “This is such a good fit—so appropriate to add to wilderness adventure,” he said. “It is non-consumptive and nonmechanized. It interprets and shares information on our wilderness. It provides another opportunity to immerse visitors in the feeling of communing with nature, get them intrigued with the beauty of our forest. “We want them to fall in love with Cook County in a respectful, careful way. It fits right in with our profile of care and stewardship of the forest. We don’t have to compromise anything. It is so much in synch with our exact priorities.” Kerfoot's speech comes out in a rush. A listener can tell that he is repeating his canopy-tour vision for the umpteenth time, but his enthusiasm remains fresh, and infectious. A zip line is an aerial runway, usually a wire cable, along which visitors, in a harness, glide on pulleys. Kerfoot’s canopy tour is to a zip line as a tree is to an arboretum: An important element but hardly the whole of the thing. Kerfoot’s canopy excursion, which he is calling “Towering Pines Canopy Tour,” will take visitors on a two-and-a-halfhour tree-top tour that involves eight

zip lines between elevated stations. Sunny Side Up Life in a Berm House By Joan Farnam

Sue Abrahamsen lives in a house that anyone living in the north country would appreciate. It’s a berm house with the north side firmly planted in the ground.

The 2-bedroom, 980-square-foot house with large, slanted windows facing the south stays cozy all winter long and requires very little wood to heat.

“If it’s sunny in the winter, even if it’s 20 below and blowing, I don’t have a fire,” Abrahamsen said. The well-insulated thick walls and the fact that the house is built into the hill provide plenty of protection from the winter cold, she said.

The house stays cool in the summer, too. The north side of the house has large dormer windows, so there’s light in the back bedrooms, and these windows, plus windows in the front of the house, provide cross ventilation on warm days.

The house is green in other ways as well. Solar panels provide power for some of the lights in the house these days, but when the house was originally built in 1984, it was almost completely solar, Abrahamsen said.

Mike Roetger and Ruth Harvey built the house on Old Ski Hill Road before there were any power lines to the site, she said. All the lights ran on solar power, which was stored in six deep-cycle golf cart batteries in the utility room. A generator pulled water from the well, and the refrigerator, cook stove and

water heater ran on gas. When Abrahamsen bought the house in 1991, she lived off the grid for five years, but eventually decided it might be nice to hook up. “I wanted a washing machine,” Sue Abrahamsen’s berm she said. She house on Old Ski Hill Road also thought is energy efficient and very a microwave comfortable in the winter. would be convenient, as well as a chest freezer. She kept the gas stove, gas refrigerator and water heater, as well as the solar system for some interior lights. “If I lose power, I still have lights,” she said. Her electricity bill is not that high, either. She uses about 100 kilowatt hours a month. The tradeoff has been worth it. Arbrahamsen is an avid gardner and grows many of her own vegetables in raised beds beside the house and garage, so it’s nice to be able store her harvest for the winter. The 265-foot deep well provides plenty of water for growing, along with her rain barrels on the corners of each building. And starting tomato plants and lettuce is a snap

When they built it, the Harveys made sure that there Minnesota Deer Hunters Association was good drainage around the sunken walls, too. “They lined the outside with gravel and put in drainage tiles,” she said. “They did a really good job with that.” She said that if she were to build a berm house again, she would change the angle of the

They are “huge” greenhouses, Spinler said, and will greatly increase their productivity in the coming years. This year, Cultivating Community will grow for 25 families. The CSA still has a few openings, as does Wharton. The “grandfather” of all CSAs on the North Shore is Round River Farm in Finland run by Lisa and David Abazs. This is their 13th year of operation, and so far this season, 42 people have signed up for shares. “We’re still taking people,” Lisa Abazs said. Although the farm is located in Finland, they deliver boxes of fresh produce to the Birch Grove Community Center where they can be picked up by their subscribers. In the case of the Round River Farm, the first vegetable box will be sent out the first Thursday in June and continue through the end of September. The Cultivating Community CSA delivers for 15 weeks, and Wharton’s Good Nature Farm, which celebrates its third year as a CSA this year, delivers for 13 weeks. The price varies according to the length of time vegetables are delivered, but averages around $25 a week.

Part of the reason is the experience she and her fellow growers have garnered over the years, but it’s also because they are increasingly incorporating season extenders, like green houses, into their farmsteads, Spinler said.

The list is endless and varies with each CSA. Some of the growers also have chickens, so that subscribers can get eggs if they wish. And, more often than not, subscribers are invited to visit the farm, see where their food is being grown and meet the farmer. “It’s their farm,” Spinler said. “They pick eggs, they pick raspberries.
