Who Needs Groundhog’s Day? Groundhogs (aka woodchucks) are common in the Northern Wilds, but you are unlikely to see one in February. They are true hibernators and spend the winter in snug burrows, deep in the ground. While a sleepy groundhog may peek from his burrow in Punxsutawney, Penn. on Feb. 2, that just doesn’t happen around here. Besides, we don’t need a groundhog seeing his shadow to know we’ll have another six weeks of winter. And that’s just fine with us.

Now is when the days become longer as the winter sun creeps higher in the sky. It’s Nature’s way of encouraging us to get outside and have some fun. You’ll find plenty of fun ideas in this issue: snowmobile rides, a sled dog race, winter festivals, cross-country skiing, snowboard terrain parks, ice fishing, an art walk and more. You really should make a “bucket list” of things you’d like to do this month. In this issue, you’ll also find a historical feature that will rouse some wintry memories. Our part of the world was once the epicenter of ski-jumping, a sport that originated in Scandinavia and was enthusiastically embraced by Duluthians over 100 years ago. Author Tony Dierckins has provided us with a wonderful story and historical postcards from the early days of ski jumping, a sport which remained popular in Duluth throughout the 20th Century. Ski jumping, like most winter activities, can lead you to have some extra aches and pains. Perhaps this explains the popularity of massage therapy on the North Shore. Casey Fitchett introduces us to the many different types of massages and services available on the North Shore. February is also a month for romance. Maren Webb points out that Valentine’s Day is on a Sunday, which means you have an entire weekend to set aside an evening to dine out with a special someone. Or maybe you want to take a different special someone out each evening—we’ll leave that up to you. Maren provides some excellent dining options all along the North Shore. Our other columnists offer an interesting selection of winter reading. Kim Falter discusses why the short days of winter affect our mood and well-being. She suggests steps you can take to counteract the lack of daylight. Julia Prinselaar tells us about a local mushroom that may become the world’s next super food—chaga. At the very least, chaga tea appears to have worthwhile health benefits. Elle Andra-Warner writes about another food-related frontier—the rise of wines made from northern grapes. Years of research at the University of Minnesota has led to the development of grapes that can be grown in our region and used to make wine. We’ll ty to keep you posted on the establishment of any vineyards in the Northern Wilds. Homespun fishing tackle is the subject of Gord Ellis’ column, which

February is also a month of festivals. In Ely, snow carvers, artists and other folks who like to have fun gather for the annual Winter Festival and Ely ArtWalk. Thunder Bay is taking a Snow Day; kids and adults can gather at Marina Park to experience all kinds of winter fun. In Grand Marais, the North House Folk School and Grand Marais Art Colony sponsor a Northern Fibers Retreat, where folks who enjoy working with their hands can learn about knitting, beading, quilting and other fiber crafts. Who would think midwinter could possibly offer so many fun and various things to do? We really don’t need a sleepy groundhog to predict the arrival of spring. We’re so busy now, that the rest of winter will just fly by. But we still offer a tip of the hat to Br’er Woodchuck. Don’t miss our Catchlight photo on Page 63.—Shawn Perich and Amber Pratt

Lutsen Mountains offers five progressive terrain parks for skiers and snowboarders. | LUTSEN MOUNTAINS
AIR TIME: Terrain parks popular on the shore LUTSEN— Not long ago, the basic agenda when it came to skiing or snowboarding was to simply make it down the mountain or hillside safely. Eventually, as with most human concepts, things evolved.
Furthermore, Lutsen offers the Boarder Cross course on Mystery Mountain that “lets you challenge your friends head-tohead through high-bank-corners, rollers and jumps,” Dressely said.
Areas now offer terrain parks. Modeled after skateboarding parks—which commonly offer a series of ramps and other means of providing aerial lift— terrain parks are built for skiers and snowboarders.
Once considered a daredevil sport, the popularity of stunt-style snowboarding and trick riding was spread to the masses by events such as ESPN’s Winter X Games. The festive, but highly competitive sporting celebration of all things winter, made it obvious to a new age of snowboarders and skiers that it’s okay to do more than just coast down a mountain at your own leisure. In short, terrain parks made it cool and accessible for anyone to take a jab at trick riding.
From Spirit Mountain near Duluth to Loch Lomond near Thunder Bay, there are numerous parks designed specifically for stunt or trick riding on skis or snowboards. Not only do these terrain parks offer ideal ramps, rails and steep terrain to perform tricks, they also keep those who aim to perform such tasks away from the casual skier or snowboarder. Lutsen Mountains marketing representative, Melissa Dressely, said terrain parks were born from snowboarders riding tricks and have now become a standard feature at resorts across the country. “Ski design followed the evolution with twin tips and trick skis,” she said. “Today there is an equal mix of skiers and snowboarders in the terrain park.” Lutsen Mountains currently offers a series of five progressive terrain parks. There are basic features at the Ullr Mountain Park, with features built close to the ground, according to Dressely. From there, the parks become more advanced, including a “half-mile of slope-style fun with a jump line and more than a dozen jibs changed up during the season,” Dressely said.
Spirit Mountain claims the largest terrain park in the Midwest, and there will likely be more terrain parks springing up at ski areas all over Minnesota and Ontario in the near future. In Vermont, Colorado and California, terrain parks have opened independent of large resorts, or without offering much in the way of traditional resorts with a vast network of trails and runs. In Minnesota, where the landscape doesn’t change much with regard to elevation (compared to say, Colorado), the possibility of a terrain park is realistic wherever there is space to build jumps, ramps or place rails. And while the Northern Wilds might not be hosting the X Games anytime soon, at least there are plenty of places to hone one’s skills in preparation and to get outside and enjoy the winter.—Joe Friedrichs

GRAND MARAIS— Over the past year and a half, eating fish has received some extra attention on the North Shore. Nearly 500 women participated in a study examining fish consumption, mercury exposure and health. The Fish are Important for Superior Health Project, also known as the FISH Project, has been focusing on helping women and their families to enjoy the health benefits of eating fish, while lowering their exposure to mercury. This project came about after a study found that 10 percent of babies tested from the North Shore area had mercury in their blood above the level considered safe. Mercury exposure is of concern for individuals of all ages, but developing fetuses and children are most at risk. Exposure can affect a child’s ability to learn and process information. This project brought together several key partners, including the Sawtooth Mountain Clinic, Grand Portage Health Service and the Minnesota Department of Health, to recruit participants to complete a survey and provide a blood sample for testing of mercury and omega-3 fatty acids levels. Overall, the results thus far have been interesting and helpful for many study participants and community members. The 499 participants reported eating over 40,000 meals of fish in the previous year, with 28 percent of them being locally caught fish. The testing showed that most participants had low levels of mercury in their blood. However, the middle value or median level for the group, 1.16 micrograms per liter (mcg/L), was higher than the U.S. and Canadian averages for women. In addition, 3 percent of participants did have mercury levels above the level considered safe for a developing fetus (5.8 mcg/L). The participants with high mercury levels had self-reported eating more fish than recommended, according to the Minnesota Department of Health Fish Eating Guidelines. As part of the project, these participants were counseled on how to lower their mercury exposure based on the fish they were eating. As one study participant shared, it was “interesting to be a part of the study—
mercury in fish is not something I really thought about before, so it’s good to be more aware and have resources about it.” Three species of fish were eaten too often by the participant pool, based on the guidelines: lake trout, walleye and canned tuna. This was especially of concern during the summer months, when consumption was higher as local fishing is more prevalent. Walleye and lake trout are recommended no more than one meal per month for women of childbearing age and children age 15 and younger. However, lower mercury fish can be eaten along with one serving of a higher mercury fish. In addition to participants’ mercury levels being tested, the levels of two omega-3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA, were also tested. DHA is important for brain and eye development in a fetus. “I think it is important to know how to eat healthy and incorporate fish into your diet…I eat some fish, but not a lot, and I should do a better job of eating more,” shared another study participant, highlighting the balance between achieving the health benefits from fish while reducing the negatives with mercury exposure. The Minnesota Department of Health will continue to analyze the data from this study to better understand the relationships between reported fish consumption and blood mercury/fatty acids levels, reported fish consumption and variation in blood mercury level, and comparing these results to results from other similar projects. “Results from these analyzes will help improve future communication of fish consumption advice and identification of women who may be at higher risk of too much exposure to mercury,” said Patricia McCann with the Minnesota Department of Health. Analysis of the data from this study is ongoing and a final report will be available by late fall 2016. Updates will be available on the Sawtooth Mountain Clinic website and information about safe fish consumption is available at www.sawtoothmountainclinic.org.—Maren Webb
enjoy teaching others about their sport. Don’t hesitate to ask questions and take photos. Choose a time when mushers are not busy and ask for their permission to pet the dogs. Also, like most athletes, sled dogs have a special diet. Please don’t feed the dogs unless the musher gives a goahead. Leave your own dogs at home. All three races start at the Ely Softball Complex off Hwy. 1. The first teams will leave from under the start banner at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 28. The parking area that morning is another place to meet the teams as they prepare for the race. Just watch where you walk. Don’t trip over sled gear stretched across the ground or step in any little “land mines.” Teams take off in two-minute intervals and their enthusiasm is flat out loud when they approach the start chute. Sometimes, they’re so effervescent, that they hop on their hind legs or spring over each other while still in harness. But once the start command is given, the howling becomes instant silence and the dogs are all business. The lasagna dinner is open to the public and is another way to support the WolfTrack Classic. It includes a social hour and dinner on Saturday, Feb. 27 from 4-7 p.m. at the Ely Senior Center. Afterwards, everyone is welcome to watch the mushers’ bib presentation. The Steger WolfTrack Classic Sled Dog Race offers a challenging competition well suited for experienced mushers or those just beginning. | SCOTT STOWELL
WolfTrack Classic offers weekend fun ELY— Ely has a long recreational mushing history from the early 1970s that even pre-dates the Iditarod. During that time, Ely was proclaimed the “sled dog capital of America,” a catch-phrase that was more than a promotional gimmick. It was real. Ely sported a slew of sled dog competitions and attracted hundreds of dog teams and mushing celebrities from around the world. That racing tradition continues with the Steger WolfTrack Classic Sled Dog Race on Feb. 27-28. Ely’s sled dog races took a hiatus in the early 1990s until WolfTrack Classic organizers rekindled the passion in 2008. Since then, they’ve explored a variety of distances and fine-tuned the course to incorporate unrelenting hills and the breathtaking
scenery of Bear Head State Park. Last winter, Steger Mukluks and Moccasins of Ely came on as the premier sponsor. Experienced mushers who have competed in big-name events, like the Iditarod, continue to participate in the WolfTrack Classic. But the race is also perfectly suited for mushers-in-the-making who are looking to test their competition skills for the first time. This year’s 8th annual running of the WolfTrack Classic features three races. The six-dog, 30-mile route runs from Ely and finishes in Tower. The eight-dog, 50-mile race turns around beyond Bear Head Lake then heads back to Ely. The 10-dog, 65mile competition sends teams out of Ely, loops just outside of Tower and returns to
the finish line in Ely. A total of $7,000 will be awarded to the winning teams. However, the races themselves are only part of the activities on WolfTrack weekend, an event that features north woods entertainment worth attending. Start by getting to know the athletes. They’re easy to recognize; the majority have four legs and favor scratches behind the ears. All sled dogs are required to have a veterinary exam prior to the race to qualify as fit for competition. The general public is encouraged to meet these dogs during the vet check at Vermilion Community College on Saturday, Feb. 27 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Volunteers are the backbone of the race. From road crossing posts to dog crews, there are many ways to get involved and still catch all the race action. Volunteering makes the race much more exciting because you actively participate in the event’s success. Spectators can watch the race at various points along the trail. For detailed locations, to volunteer, register a team, or learn more about the Steger WolfTrack Classic Sled Dog Race, visit www.wolftrackclassic.com.—Scott Stowell

Minnesota DNR becomes member of the Forest Stewardship Council ST. PAUL—The Minnesota DNR is the first state government agency in the nation to become a member of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), which sets standards for responsible forest management.
The DNR is excited to provide input into standards that protect the environment and benefit society while insuring landowners manage their lands sustainably, Beyer said.
“The DNR is a member of FSC because we are concerned with the environmental, economic and social impacts associated with managing forests,” said Tim Beyer, DNR forest certification consultant. “This gives the DNR the opportunity to participate and provide input to policy, standards and governance of the organization.”
“A diverse membership is the key to the integrity of our system,” said Corey Brinkema, president of the FSC U.S. “It is wonderful to have the Minnesota DNR join as a member to reflect the interests of the people of Minnesota in the decisions FSC makes.”
The FSC is a member-led, nonprofit organization that promotes managing the world’s forests to keep them healthy, while meeting the demand for forest products now and into the future. Individuals and organizations apply to become members. Public and private landowners voluntarily enroll their land into the program and maintain FSC certification by demonstrating they met the council’s standards each year. Wood harvested from certified land is used to create products with the FSC label. Examples include construction building materials, paper and furniture.
Minnesota became the first state in the U.S. to certify state forests lands in 1997 and manages the largest FSC-certified forest in the U.S. at nearly 5 million acres. “Managing our forests to the highest standard to protect the environment and provide a sustainable supply of wood for our forest products companies that contribute to the state economy is extremely important to the DNR,” said Beyer. “Forest certification is one way to meet these values.” Visit www.mndnr.gov/forestry/certification for more information.

Serenity Spoken Here Massage therapy BY CASEY FITCHETT
Getting a regular massage can help joint pain, improve your mood and boost energy levels. | STOCK hether a visitor to the North Shore or a local resident, Lake Superior’s pristine waters and sprawling snowy woods sets the stage for pure serenity and relaxation. For many, simply being away from the traffic and crowds of an urban setting is enough to achieve a “superior” level of physical and mental calm. Others might require an observational hike among snow-covered trees on the Superior Hiking Trail to breathe easier. A few want nothing more than to be able to sip coffee and read a book in the lodge of their resort, uninterrupted. Recognizing the North Shore as a prime relaxation destination, massage artists in this corner of Minnesota play a significant role in area tourism. Both destination resort-affiliated spas and independent massage practitioners cater to those hoping for a bit of respite from internal and external chaos. Massage is a general term for the manipulation of skin, muscles, tendons and ligaments. Reasons for seeking a massage are as varied as the clients themselves. Generally associated with alternative medicine, some studies confirm its effectiveness in treating medical conditions, such as soft tissue strains, fibromyalgia and joint pain. Certain methods of massage have been shown to help reduce back pain, while several focus primarily on stress and anxiety relief. 12

In the wintertime, many people combat symptoms of seasonal affective disorder, a depressive disorder with seasonal patterns. This disorder and its less-severe relation, the winter blues, affect as many as one in five Americans. Regular massages can help sufferers improve mood, boost energy levels and positively affect the way their body reacts to adverse influences.
center means the business has lodging and full-service dining within easy walking distance of the spa, personal services such as facials, wellness services such as yoga and professional consultation services on site. They can offer customers consultations with cosmetologists, estheticians and a board certified massage therapist, among other professionals.
Some styles of massage involve more intense physical pressure to achieve ideal results, while others may incorporate energy transfer with light touch as part of the session. Deep circular movements paired with vibration and tapping are indicative of a traditional Swedish massage, and a deep tissue massage uses slow, forceful strokes to target deeper layers of muscle. Sport massages aren’t solely for athletes; anyone with a restricted joint range of motion or chronic pain may notice positive outcomes with regular sessions.
Waves of Superior Spa is a resort spa facility connected to Bluefin Bay in Tofte. Its 3,800 square feet includes five massage and specialty treatment rooms and a space reserved exclusively for couples. Their 90-minute Waves Signature Massage combines custom warm oil blends, hot towel hydrating wraps, warm stones and a lavender eye pillow. An indoor heated lap pool, hot tub, sauna and fitness center complete the wellness environment.
Some of the larger massage therapy studios on the North Shore are connected to the area’s resorts. WatersMeet Spa and Wellness Center is a destination spa located at Lutsen Resort. It boasts services that cover a wide variety of needs, including the trademarked Feet Treat, Perfect Combination and Mini Retreat services. The Perfect Combination allows individuals to choose particular areas to experience deep tissue massage and enjoy gentle relaxation techniques on others. Being a destination spa and wellness

The Mountain Massage Studio at Caribou Highlands in Lutsen boasts views of Lake Superior and Moose Mountain. Their most popular massage offering is the Signature Mountain Massage, which features pampering touches, a hot towel foot wrap and various techniques meant to improve circulation and ease muscle aches. “A relaxation massage helps us shift to a present state of being, freeing the mind and soul of our day to day struggle with the ‘rat race’ within. It allows us to tap into our inner self and connect to the body and its needs,” says Teri Chilefone, massage therapist at the Mountain Massage
Studio. “Relaxation helps us to think more clearly and creatively. I feel that receiving a frequent massage, while not only healing to the body, helps with a more grounded and centered perspective to our lives.” Rick Anderson runs the Sweetgrass Cove Guesthouse and Bodywork Studio in Grand Portage. His specialty is therapeutic massage, specifically Integrative Neuromuscular Therapy. This type of therapy combines deep tissue massage and Esalen massage, the latter of which is known for its long, integrating strokes, joint mobilization and energy work. Founder Brigette Nies has been associated with the healing arts since enrolling in the Institute of Natural Healing Sciences’ massage therapy program in 1997. Her resume also includes yoga instructor, master herbalist, breathwork facilitator and reiki master. Reiki (pronounced ray-key) originated in early 20th century Japan as a handson technique to promote relaxation, stress reduction and healing. Following a life-changing experience, its founder recognized a sacred life force he deemed ki. Through reiki healing sessions, others are able to become effective healers. The sessions involve the gentle placement of hands on and around 12 different positions on the body, resulting in energy flowing where it is most needed. Harmony is said

to replace physical, mental, emotional and physical imbalances. “I describe my style as therapeutic massage with a gentle intuitive approach that focuses on both the physical manifestation and the energetic connection of ailments,” said Nies. “My goal during a session is to assist the client in finding a state of balance and harmony and to assist them in returning to a state of peace and well-being.” Laurie Senty, owner of Shiatsu Therapy & Therapeutic Massage, located in Grand Marais, also provides Reiki. Her other services include active isolated stretching, a Swedish massage, Thai yoga massage, a chair massage, shiatsu therapy and zeus-ki. Run by registered nurse Pamela Faye, Cedarwood Spa provides healing services five miles inland, surrounded by Superior National Forest. Her background as a nurse contributes greatly to her understanding of clients of all ages with health concerns. She is a certified healing touch and stone medicine practitioner, utilizing a holistic approach to wellness in a calm and safe setting. “The spa is nestled in the woods among cedar trees. Cedars are said to drive out negative energy and bring good influences and it’s a fitting environment for such a place of deep tranquility and healing,” says Faye. Getting a massage can be an informative and all-encompassing experience. The massage therapist should explain the kind of massage and techniques he or she will use in advance of the session. It is also expected that the therapist will ask the participant about symptoms, relevant medical history and preferred outcome from the session. Oil, lotion and scents may be used to the comfort of the participant. It’s important to note any allergies or sensitivities before the massage. While once considered solely an extravagant means of pampering, a massage can be a way to enhance overall health and well-being. Whether searching for a solution to a specific problem area on the body or simply hoping for a retreat from the stress of everyday life, there is a massage style that can be tailored to your needs. With resort-affiliated spas and independent providers scattered along the shore, relaxation is never more than a hot stone’s throw away.

Jumping in the Norseman’s Shoes
S
BY TONY DIERCKINS
Forty-two Duluthians answered the call at Duluth’s St. Louis Hotel on Nov. 21, 1905, organizing as the Duluth Ski Club. Club founders consisted almost exclusively of Norwegian immigrants. John Mangseth was named the club’s first captain and I. A. Iverson its first president. The club’s bylaws stated that “any white man or woman of good standing over twelve years of age may become a member of the club” and that “no liquor can be served or sold at any of the functions of the club.” An early proposal to limit membership to those of Scandinavian descent was dropped “as a policy which could work to no good end.”
ki jumping in Duluth can trace its way back to Jan. 1, 1905, when the Duluth News Tribune called on Duluthians to organize a ski club to participate in the “Norwegian sport” of skiing. Nordic skiing and ski jumping as sports were fairly new concepts, and the newspaper felt compelled to describe a ski: “The ski is the Norseman’s shoe,” the newspaper explained, “differing from the American Indian’s footgear [snowshoes] in having its bearing surface of solid wood and not a webbed frame.”
For its first ski hill, the club chose a spot in Woodland behind Washburn School on St. Andrews Street. Dubbed “Duluth Hill,” the site promised an approach of 300 feet with a minimum jump of 100 feet. Mangseth and four others tested the hill on Dec. 18, 1905, with the captain jumping 75 feet. The Ski Club held its first event there on Jan. 7, 1906, and a crowd of 300 onlookers saw at least one jumper soar 96 feet. Later that month, the Duluth Ski Club captured several awards at the first annual ski tournament on Ashland, Wisconsin’s White River Hill. Assistant captain Olaf Larson tied for first place and Mangseth came in third. Two other Duluthians finished in the top ten. The Duluth Ski Club continued to dominate that year. At the National Ski Tournament on Brasswire Hill in Ishpeming, Michigan, that February, Duluth’s Ole Feiring took the $100 first place prize and Mangseth came in second. Later that winter on the Aurora Club’s hill in Red Wing, Minnesota, Duluth’s Gustave Bye jumped 106 feet; a new American record. The following season, the club abandoned its Woodland hill when it purchased land adjacent to Chester Creek above Boulevard Drive (Skyline Parkway), which unofficially opened on Christmas Day, 1906. Chester Hill’s first tournament was held on Jan. 20, 1907. Feiring jumped 112 feet, shattering Bye’s record by six feet before a crowd of 3,500. Feiring’s American record was still 27 feet shorter than Norway’s best.

On their new home hill, the Duluth men took first through fourth place. Feiring’s record was short-lived. Four days later on the ski hill in Red Wing, Aurora Club member Ole Mangseth—John Mangseth’s brother— jumped 114 feet. Despite having his record
A selection of postcards showing early ski jumping competitions held at Chester Bowl. | COURTESY OF TONY DIERCKINS so quickly broken, Feiring went on to dominate tournaments for the rest of the season, with several first-place finishes. A February tournament at Chester Hill drew in an estimated crowd of 5,000. The following year, after building a warming house for spectators and a club house for members, the Duluth Ski Club hosted the Fourth Annual National Ski Tournament of America. By 9 a.m. on the first day, more than 9,000 spectators surrounded Chester Hill. Feiring, who was greeted by “deafening applause,” fell twice, putting him out of the running. Duluth’s John Evanson came through for the Zenith City, setting a new national record at 116 feet. Four days later, during a special extension of the tournament, John Mangseth broke Evanson’s feat when he jumped 117 feet. Later, that same month in a tournament in Ishpeming, Evanston leaped 132 feet, closing in on the world record. Duluth had become the center of ski jumping in the U.S. Still, the Duluth Ski Club had no monopoly on ski jumping in Duluth. Made up of boys, the West End Ski Club organized in 1907 with members of the Mork Athletic Club and Hill Toppers Club, coming together to host tournaments from a hill adjacent to Piedmont Avenue. That same year, the West Duluth Ski Club organized, jumping from a hill located along today’s Skyline Parkway between 59th and 60th Ave. West. Later, the Zenith Ski Club would build a hill alongside Miller’s Creek on 14th St. National focus remained on the Chester Hill and the Duluth Ski Club. In Feb. 1908, the Duluth Ski Club hosted the Fourth Annual National Ski Tournament of America at the Chester Creek hill. That April, the
slide and its scaffolding came tumbling to the ground after a wind storm. It was rebuilt, and at 81 feet tall the new jump stood 25 feet higher than its predecessor. The Duluth Ski Club continued to play a large role in the National Ski Association for the next nine years, hosting the national tournament again in 1915. By then, Duluth skiers had ceased to dominate the winner’s platform. When the club raised the jump to 90 feet before the tournament, it appealed in local newspapers for new members: their dues were needed to finance the construction. In the fall of 1915, the club was in desperate need of money. The following May, the entire jump came down, “tossed 100 feet into the woods and shattered to bits,” the News-Tribune reported. The grandstand tipped over and the slide approach was blown halfway down the hill. The club folded shortly thereafter. In 1918, the city purchased the Chester Creek Hill. In 1922 the Duluth Ski Club reorganized and its skiers donned the club’s green-andwhite uniforms for the first time, sending eight skiers to the national tournament in Minneapolis. In 1923 the club built the 115-foot tall Big Chester ski jump. Two years later, a steel slide, reportedly the “largest steel slide in the world” was built at Chester, and that same year, the national tournament returned to the Zenith City. In 1940, the Works Project Administration helped Duluth build a new ski jumping facility near the former Krause Brownstone Quarry on Mission Creek. The Fond du Lac Winter Sports Center included a skating rink, cross-country ski trails, an 800-foot toboggan slide, an alpine ski hill, and a 196-foot ski jump. In the summer,
the cross-country trails were used as bridle paths. The Winter Sports Center was accessed by an entrance at the convergence of East and West Mission Creek Parkway. It became a popular recreation site, and winter activities included sleigh rides. A judges’ stand was built, as was a chalet that boasted a kitchen, a long wooden bar, hardwood floors and two fireplaces, one at each end of the structure. Besides serving the entire community, the Winter Sports Center became another home for the Duluth Ski Club, which hosted tournaments at the site while continuing to train at Chester Bowl. The ski jump was first used in a tournament in Feb. 1941, when 5,000 spectators turned out for the facility’s dedication and an exhibition by national and Olympic skiers, including famed Norwegian-born jumper Torger Tokle, who set the hill’s initial record at 203 feet. The following year, the national ski-jumping championships were held at Fond du Lac. By 1949 the ski hill had been nicknamed the Ojibway Bowl. During a 1954 competition at Fond du Lac, the Duluth Ski Club’s Joe Nowack jumped a record-setting 226 feet. Later, club president Nowak went on to set 11 ski jumping records in the U.S., Canada and Europe and later coached skiing at Cloquet High School. In 1975, his team was ranked first in the nation. His Ojibway Bowl record was tied in 1960 by Gene Kotlarek, also of Duluth. In 1964, the ski jump at Fond du Lac was increased to 70 meters, but nature doomed the slide’s future. The spring floods of 1972 eroded the land around the ski jump, making it dangerous to leave the jumps standing. The ski jump was removed and the
erosion damage to the hill was filled; it was reseeded and planted to prevent further erosion. Focus had already returned to Chester Park in the 1960s, and in 1969 a 55-meter jump was added; two years later, a 35-meter hill that would be called Little Chester joined the cluster of slides. In the early 1970s, Chester Bowl boasted five ski jumps. Over the years, several Olympic ski jumpers trained at Chester Park as members of the Duluth Ski Club, including Adrian Watt, Greg Swor and Jim J. Denney. During trials for the 1968 Olympics, Watt landed a jump of 337 feet, setting a record at Pine Mountain in Iron Mountain, Mich. He competed in the 1968 Olympics and the following year won the U.S. Championship. A member of the U.S. Ski Team from 1970 to 1975, Swor was U.S. junior champion in 1970 and the U.S. Championship in 1972. Denny captured the U.S. ski jumping championship in 1976 and 1980 and the 1978 World Cup. He was inducted into the American Ski Jumping Hall of Fame in 2008. Chester Bowl saw its last ski jumping competition in 2005 and the Duluth Ski Club has not been active since then. (It technically still exists as a legal entity called Duluth Nordic Ski Club, Inc., owned by longtime-Ski Club member George Hovland’s Snowflake Skiing Group.) On Aug. 18, 2014, workers pulled down what remained of the “Little Chester” ski jump. “Big Chester” came down two days earlier. Editors note: This story is excerpted from the book Duluth’s Parks: An Illustrated History, forthcoming by Duluth’s Zenith City Press.

Ely Winter ArtWalk For some of us, winter tends to drag on, keeping us cooped up and looking for something to do. So head to Ely for the 17th annual ArtWalk, in conjunction with the Ely Winter Festival, Feb. 4-14. This non-competitive, non-profit “walk” is a nod toward the hardiness of the north woods people; who else would go window shopping in February? It is a showplace for the wide range of creative artists and 100 percent of the artwork profit goes to the individual artists involved. Ely ArtWalk draws many visitors from around the Arrowhead region and beyond. This year, roughly 42 businesses will participate by offering their store windows as the gallery for 67 adult artists and over 200 child artists. Over 500 works of art will be on display, ranging from oil paintings, watercolors, woodblock prints, jewelry, sculptures, quilting, woodworks, textiles and drawings. Cloud Cult was nominated by Minnesota Music Awards as “Artist of the Year” in 2004. | GRAHAM TOLBERT Nationally-recognized experimental rock music group Cloud Cult will be performing at Papa Charlie’s in Lutsen Feb. 6. The group’s Duluth beginnings can be traced back more than 20 years, to founder Craig Minowa’s 1995 solo studio project. The first official Cloud Cult album, “Who Killed Puck?” was released in 2000 and attracted attention from various independent record labels. The group was determined, however, to remain in control of all business decisions and rejected the advances of the established labels in favor of self-publishing. In 1999, Minowa and his wife Connie formed Earthology, a non-profit environmental organization. From Earthology came Earthology Records, the branch dedicated to helping green the music industry. “Earthology Records was created out of the need to work within the music industry, but do it in an environmentally friendly way,” Minowa explained in a 2013 interview. Minowa’s environmentally conscious background played a vital role in his decisions regarding the production of this first CD and development of his label. He began to realize that there was no way to manufacture a CD that made him feel comfortable with the inevitable envi18

ronmental impact. His solution for the packaging was to use recycled jewel cases that had been donated by college students at bookstores. Boxes upon boxes of cases began flooding in, which he and his team then cleaned by hand. The combination of his passions for both music and protecting the environment led to the first 100 percent postconsumer recycled CD packaging in the United States. Their decision to begin touring brought with it a whole new set of ethical dilemmas. Concerns over his carbon footprint led Minowa and the group to attempt zero net greenhouse gas practices while on tour. The solar panels on their biodiesel van power everything they are using inside, they plant trees to absorb their CO2 output, and they donate to projects that build wind turbines as revenue generators on Native American reservations. Tragedy struck the band’s founder and his wife in 2002. The unexpected death of their two-year-old son Kaidin prompted Minowa to write over a hundred songs to deal with the loss and continue to address the “big picture” questions of life through music. Cloud Cult has received positive reviews from the likes of the New York Times, NPR Music, the Los Angeles Times and the Denver Post. Rolling Stone describe their sound as
the “instrumental arsenal of the Arcade Fire mixed with the gentle electronic throb of the Postal Service.” Their 2007 album, “The Meaning of 8,” was touted by the Denver Post as one of the top 10 albums of the past decade. They will be releasing their tenth full-length studio album, “The Seeker,” on Feb. 12. The group thinks very fondly of the North Shore and even takes a short break from touring here following the show each year. “We always look forward to coming back to Papa Charlie’s. The Lutsen show has become an annual retreat for the band, as we’ll take a few days up there to decompress, ski and enjoy Northern Minnesota, which is where Cloud Cult was born,” explains Minowa. “The staff at Lutsen has practically gotten to be like family, as we get to spend time with them year after year and it’s pretty cool to ski the slopes with friends and fans.” Cloud Cult will be performing at Papa Charlie’s on Feb. 6, at 9:30 p.m. Part of their show includes two live painters on stage, Connie Minowa and Scott West, as well as back screen video and performance artists. The North Shore Dish Valentine’s Day: A Weekend to Celebrate By Maren Webb
Once a year, a certain holiday comes around that helps us remember to take some time to celebrate love and affection. It also happens to be one of the most popular holidays to honor by dining out. This year, Valentine’s Day lands on a Sunday. I predict that this will be one of the nicest Valentine’s Days because many restaurants will be offering special menus for the whole weekend. If you are still looking for a spot to bring your loved one, I have a few ideas for your Valentine’s Day weekend. The North Shore is known for many romantic locations, from views of cascading waterfalls to cabins tucked away in the woods. One of my favorites is the Grand Marais Harbor, with the charming downtown overlooking the ever-changing views of Lake Superior. The Crooked Spoon Café has been a staple of Grand Marais for almost 10 years and this past year they added on. You can now enjoy this beautiful view from their new enclosed rooftop bar. For those looking for a simple way to celebrate, the rooftop bar is a perfect spot to enjoy a glass of wine and an appetizer or dessert as the sun sets or the stars sparkle. If you are like me and want to take full advantage of eating an extraordinary meal, the Crooked Spoon Café will be offering a special Valentine’s menu Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I would recommend starting your meal with a local brew or glass of wine and appetizer upstairs in their rooftop bar, before you head back downstairs for your meal. This year, their Valentine’s menu will be created to be shared as a couple, with an appetizer to share, a choice of two different entrees and a dessert. Set wine pairings will also be available to enhance the meal. Like anyone who has food restrictions, I’m often nervous about special menus and whether there will be something I can enjoy. Fear not, as the Crooked Spoon will be offering their regular menu in addition to the special menu, which includes vegetarian and gluten-free options. As co-owner Sara Hingos shared, they “hope to provide a romantic, memorable meal” for each couple that joins them this Valentine’s Day. This husband and wife duo has been celebrating their Valentine’s Day together at the restaurant for many years, while helping others enjoy a memorable meal. The Crooked Spoon’s usual reservation policy will be in effect for the holiday weekend. Parties of six or more can make reservations (218-387-2779 or crooked-

If you aren’t able to make it on Valentine’s Day weekend, be sure to visit their rooftop bar another time this winter—it will be open Saturday nights throughout the season. On the North Shore, we are quite lucky to have many great restaurants right on the shores of Lake Superior. At Larsmont Cottages, off the Scenic Drive between Duluth and Two Harbors, sits the Ledge Rock Grille. Their executive chef, Uriah
Hefter, is offering a three-course meal with an optional wine pairing for Valentine’s Day weekend for $50/person or $65/ person with wine pairing. The menu will start with an amuse bouche; a compressed strawberry with chocolate dust. For the first course, the options will be an edible earth with arcadian greens, tomato and peach vinaigrette, a chilled sour cherry soup, and a roasted carrot salad with peppered micro greens, feta and truffle balsamic. A grilled rainbow trout, duck confit and Caribbean seared ahi tuna will be the options for the main course. The final course will be dessert, choosing from a chocolate torte, peach semifreddo, or a crème brulee cheesecake. Ballatore Champagne will also be available. Each person will take home a chocolate truffle with the purchase of a bottle. Reservations are recommended (218-834-8250).

If you are looking for an extra memorable dinner date, the Ledge Rock Grille also offers a chef’s table experience with the only open kitchen on the North Shore. Perfect for any food lover, the chef’s
table allows you a front row seat to the kitchen. Watch professional chefs prepare your 6-course dinner ($100/person) and learn about the techniques and ingredients they use. To explore more, visit www.larsmontcottages.com/ledge-rock-grille. The restaurant will also have its usual menu available over the weekend. Restaurants in the Waterfront District of Thunder Bay are hosting the Winter Delights Festival, Feb. 1-14. Whether you want to celebrate Valentine’s on the 14th or earlier in the month, you’ll be able to take advantage of a prix fixe two-course meal for $25 (CAD) at many of the Waterfront District restaurants. I’m already dreaming about what the menu will include at the Red Lion Smokehouse, the Sovereign Room and the Foundry Pub. The Waterfront District has 25 restaurants and 32 shops to check out. Plan to bundle up for a stroll and you can also enjoy the galleries and shops in the neighborhood. For more info about the festival, visit www.facebook.com/waterfrontdistrict.bia. Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate love, whether with a significant other, friends or family. It’s also an opportunity to treat ourselves to a fancy meal and try something new. I hope you have a wonderful Valentine’s Day and enjoy a special dining experience.

BEST BOOKS FOR A NORTHERN WILDS WINTER
Baby, it’s cold outside...So why not stay inside by the fire, grab a cup of hot chocolate and curl up with a good book? Here are suggestions from our Northern Wilds staff for a good read this winter.
Julia Prinselaar
From Katie Viren
“The Compassionate Hunter’s Guidebook: Hunting from the Heart” by Miles Olson: When it comes to hunting for sustenance, Miles Olson delves into the heart of the matter. In his second manifesto, the author offers personal insight into responsible hunting practices and how they are intimately tied to the land. This practical manual exposes the complex and often unrecognized relationship between hunter and prey. Highly recommended to anyone curious about the reverence and philosophy behind harvesting wild meat.
From Shawn Perich
“Yes Please” by Amy Poehler: I appreciate Amy Pohler’s candor, courage and humor in her memoir, “Yes Please.” I was impressed with how she waded into events that she wasn’t proud of and her path toward resolution. The book was peppered with funny prose and quotes by Pema Chodron, which made me appreciate her even more. I got this as an audio book. Poehler did a special taping for this book and had a whole collection of guest voices, including Carol Burnett and Patrick Stewart, making it a very pleasant listen.
“North Shore: A Natural History of Minnesota’s Superior Coast” by Chel Anderson and Adelheid: I bought this book shortly after it came out last summer and must admit I’ve yet to finish reading it. Perhaps I never will. This is because it contains an incredible treasure trove of the North Shore’s natural history. You can only read so much of it before you must put it down and ponder what you have learned. If you want to understand how nature works in this cold, wet corner of the world, there is no better source.

Fluoride is safe and a huge benefit in providing good oral health and helps in the prevention of tooth decay. Water fluoridation is estimated to reduce tooth decay by 20% to 40%. The EPA recommends wells should be tested every three years. How do I do this? It’s simple. Just stop in at the Cook County Court House/Environmental Health Office (Planning and Zoning) or the Sawtooth Mountain Clinic to pick up a form and a bag for the water. The bag of water and completed form is then returned to the Environmental Health Office (Planning and Zoning) for testing. Results of the test will be sent by letter from the Environmental Health Office.
If you have questions, please contact Georgene Daubanton at the Oral Health Task Force at 218 387-2334 or Joseph Routh, Fluoride Analyst at 218 387-3631 or 387-3630. NORTHERN WILDS

NORTHERN WILDS
Sunlight, Cold Weather and the Human Body By Kim Falter Animals live in tune with nature. They expend and conserve energy, eat and sleep following cues by the body in accordance with natural rhythms. Humans, not so much. When it begins to get dark earlier and earlier, we simply flip on the lights. As the cold weather encroaches, our natural tendency to store fat for the impending cold leads to sugar binges due to an abundance of food at the ready. Our current tendency towards the sedentary, or busyness, does not adjust due to the change in season. Our bodies still want to follow the natural rhythms, yet we require it adjust to unnatural circumstances. This leads to stress on the systems you count on to keep you in optimal condition. Mild illnesses are the norm, they keep our immune system in check, yet the continued perpetuation of the bad habits that arise due to these unnatural conditions creates an environment ripe for a weakened immune system, poor sleep, weight gain, mental fogginess, anxiety and extreme fatigue. We cannot readily change the weather or the circumstances of the human condition. What we can do is slightly adjust our lives, to gently acclimate to the extremes of living so far north.
Routine:
were living like those animals out in the woods, we would be sleeping more hours during the winter. Most of us do not adjust our sleep cycles to natural rhythms and because of this, we can experience pronounced sleep disorders. Adding an extra hour of sleep during the winter months is an easy remedy. Supplements such as melatonin can help. Originally an aid for those adjusting to jet lag, melatonin has grown in notoriety as a natural way to balance sleep cycles. A little goes a long way, so start with the lowest dose available. Take it about 45 minutes before you want to fall asleep.
Adequate Exercise:
Physically active people are happier. Exercise has been shown to improve mood, reduce stress levels and leave a general sense of well-being. It also helps work toxins out of the body, through lymph action, therefore boosting your immune system. Exercise does not have to be rigorous or dreaded, simply find an activity that appeals to you and ease into it.
Vitamin D:
Little is understood about our need for the sun’s energy, but we do know that it helps us produce vitamin D, which we need to survive. Supplementation levels vary; ranging from 1,000-10,000 IU’s. Since vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin (which means you store it), it is important to check with a physician to find the dosage that work best for you. Remember to look for a vitamin D3 supplement, as this is its natural form. Vitamin D2 is also commonly available, but is the synthetic form.
Seasonal Affective Disorder does not exist at the Equator. The sun rises at 6 a.m. and sets at 6 p.m., and the weather fluctuates by about 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Sure there are extremes in weather, but this type of climate is in a steady state more often than not. This is very different from life in the north, where days can be very short or Without the circumstances humans have very long, with extreme temperature fluctuations. Our body wants to exist within created, living here in the Northern Wilds a steady state called homeostasis. At the would be a painfully cold existence—a Equator, there are almost no changes to fight for survival every day. We are incredyour wardrobe over a year, unlike here ibly lucky to have lights, heat and food at where we must accommodate the change the ready. The key is finding the right balin seasons. Change is a challenge, but just ance between this human world we have as we change our clothing, our bodies need created and the effects the natural world is a change to better adjust to the fluctuat- having upon us. ing seasons. Having a routine during the winter months can help ease stress placed on your system. Your body is already compensating on a daily basis with the ever-shortening days and the cold temperatures, so when you skip a meal, don’t get adequate sleep or spend too for many days sitting around, Only at Gunflint Mercantile in Grand Marais you are exacerbating the stress. Eating and sleeping Y at the same time, and conY Y sistently staying active, can help your body relax.

Northern Trails The Little Terrace Bay Tackle Company That Could By Gord Ellis
There was a time when most fishing lures were made in a garage or basement. They were then sold in local sporting goods stores. But since the sport fishing boom of the 1970s and 1980s, angling has become big business. The majority of popular fishing lures are now made in huge factories and mass-marketed by the thousands. Yet there is a father and son team from Terrace Bay, Ontario, who have bucked that trend and are producing lures the old fashioned way. Their company name is Mighty Mitch and Jungle Joe’s Jig Flies, and over the past 12 years or so, they have made quite a name for themselves in Northern Ontario and across North America. The lure they make is called a jig fly. It’s a multi-colored bucktail jig that’s a popular lure for catching brook trout in the Nipigon River. Bucktail jigs have been around forever and they really catch all species of fish. Walleye, bass, lake trout and pike will all eat a jig fly. Smaller jigs will take panfish like perch and crappie. The prettier jigs, with multi-colored hair and feathers, are hard to find. Most of the commercially made bucktail jigs are pretty plain. So this is the niche market that Joe and Mitch Kostecki have tapped into. “We used to buy the jig flies, from D&R Sporting Goods and Lorne’s Cameras, in Thunder Bay,” said Joe Kostecki. “There was a guy by the name of Dan Klatt, from Nipigon, Ontario, who used to make them. But then you couldn’t get them anymore.” Since Kostecki was a jig fly fan, he did what he had to do. He found somebody who could teach him how to tie flies and make his own jig flies. “To be honest with you, they didn’t start out all that great,” said Kostecki. “Compared to what they are now, there is a big difference. It started out as just a hobby and was introduced on (the website) Thunder Bay Fishing and went from there.” Kostecki says he didn’t want to copy the exact jig fly he used to buy, but his first stabs were pretty similar, and crude. Over time, he started to find his own style and then expanded out into other patterns. The patterns today are not only well put together, but they are finished in a way that makes them almost too pretty to use. Almost. From the start, Kostecki wanted to get his son Mitch involved in his fledgling business. So when Mitch Kostecki was just

I’ve tied jigs for the past 10 to 12 years and now I’m in the last year of university and I’m still tying. I’m still doing it.” Mitch says he enjoys working with his father and has no plans to pull out of the partnership any time soon. “When you have a father/son team, with just the two people doing it, the quality stays up,” he said. Although jigs are the primary focus, the pair have also been doing some brightly colored fashion earrings, just to mix it up.
“We started making pink jig flie in support of breast cancer research,” said Joe Kostecki. “Some girls would see them and say ‘whoa, are those ever nice. You should make those into earrings.’ And I said to my wife I should! So I gave it a try and it’s worked. They are a good seller.” Today, the Mighty Mitch and Jungle Joe business is a growing concern. They have products in shops across northern and southern Ontario, in Quebec, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and northern Minnesota. The increasing demand has lead Joe and Mitch to look for some outside help. “I actually have people that work for me and help me out pouring the lead and paint-
ing the heads,” said Kostecki. Yet he and his son are still the main workers. “Mitch tied 300 jigs for me in the last month and a half. That’s a lot of tying,” he said. Kostecki says it takes the average person 15 minutes to a half an hour to tie a good jig fly. Whereas he and Mitch have it down to a science and can tie a jig in 5 to 10 minutes. Despite the temptation to keep expanding, for now the duo are keeping it home-based. “I’m going to keep the company where it is,” said Kostecki. “I’ve got a few years left at the mill. Then, when I retire, I can put 100 percent of my concentration into this and who knows, maybe it will get bigger.”

Wild Traditions Chaga: A Slow-growing Backyard Superfood By Julia Prinselaar
It seems like every time I open a health magazine or visit a wellness-related website, I find the latest featured superfood: something particularly nutrient-dense, with more antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, enzymes or protein than most of the foods we are accustomed to eating. Superfoods are usually plants sourced from faraway places: goji berries from Tibet and China, turmeric root from India, spirulina algae from Japan, agave nectar from Mexico—all touted as crucially beneficial for improved health and vitality. These foods have, and continue to be, used by people in their country of origin, espousing a deep connection to one’s heritage and culture. But as their benefits are ‘discovered’ by Western markets, government policymakers must take a cautious approach to meeting global demand. Take teff for example, a mineral-rich, high-protein grain that is shaping up to be the world’s next superfood. Mostly cultivated in the Horn of Africa, the crop is a crucial food staple that is garnering worldwide attention from those seeking a nutritious, gluten-free alternative to wheat (think diabetics and celiac patients). Relatively unknown outside of Ethiopia, the cereal is predicted to replace quinoa as the latest global superfood, according to a 2014 story published in the New York Times.

appears as a black, charcoal-like growth, colored golden-orange on the inside—is sparking interest among the medical community in a very big way.
Ethiopia initially banned the export of teff to control price hikes and avoid the pitfalls of the quinoa market in Bolivia, where locals could not afford the staple crop after its surge in global popularity. Fi-

genus Betula, and research shows that betulinic acid can hamper the growth of tumors, essentially causing certain types of cancer cells to rapidly die of old age. Carl and Esther Godin own 190 acres of property on their farm outside of Thunder Bay, where they tap birch trees for syrup. The couple has known about chaga for about a decade, but they’ve only recently been infusing the mushroom in birch sap for its synergistic effects. “There is betulinic acid in the sap of the birch tree, but it’s concentrated in the inner bark. And that’s where the chaga lives,” says Carl Godin. He and his wife are currently partnering with various organizations to develop a value-added forest product that combines chaga extract with local super-fruits. But like most wild-crafted health foods in high demand, the biggest challenge with chaga is its slow-growing nature. “That’s the biggest challenge with it, the bioavailability of the betulinic acid from chaga. It grows in the wild, and as far as I’m aware, no one has figured out how to propagate it yet. We harvest it every four or five years from the same tree. When you harvest it, you try to take about 60 percent so that you leave about 40 percent to grow back,” he says. Harvesting in winter, when the tree has gone dormant, is also integral to sustainable harvest.
The early stages of chaga growth. | ONTARIO NATURE and with caution,” writes Mallory Vanier, Ontario Nature’s boreal program intern in Thunder Bay. From a conservation perspective, forest foods like chaga give reason for protecting wild spaces from industrial development. And in its slow-growing nature, the wildness of chaga offers wisdom: that certain natural processes cannot be replicated, manipulated or synthesized for controlled growth and exploitation (at least for now); and that we, in our motion-obsessed lives, must learn to acquiesce to the cycles and rhythms of Nature.
Cautions like these are echoed by Ontario Nature, a non-profit organization that protects and restores natural habitats through research, education and conservation. “Trees can be harmed or killed when harvesting chaga if the harvester digs too deep and damages the internal tissues of the tree ... Chaga mushrooms take several years to grow and do not grow on every tree, so they must be harvested in moderation

Cotopaxi Kilimanjaro 20L Backpack
By Claude A. Barr
$79.95
University of Minnesota Press, $27.95
More than 500 Great Plains wildflowers can be found in this classic plant guide for enthusiasts and horticulturists. Author Claude A. Barr has spent decades observing plants in the wild and growing them for his nursery, as well as studying scientific sources. This edition of “Jewels of the Plains” incorporates this scientific information, as well as an introduction and notes by botanist and horticulturist James H. Locklear, adding a new and contemporary perspective. This is an interesting read and great source for any horticulturalist, filled with an index, glossary of terms, colored photos and detailed information on each plant. —Breana Roy
Until recently it seemed backpack shopping presented two choices: function (techy-looking and pricey), or form (maybe cheaper and more subtle looking, but not so great for technical use). Well, the Cotopaxi Kilimanjaro 20L achieves both with aplomb. Its slim, compact design is both attractive and functional. On a recent day hike off the Gunflint Trail, the pack ably held many extra layers (necessary for my overprepared self in the near-zero temperature), snacks, and a water bottle with hot tea. There was still plenty of room to spare. The pack is deceptively cavernous with a large main compartment (including a lightly padded laptop sleeve), two outside front zipper pockets, and slide pockets on either side perfect for a water bottle. Most notable is the pack’s thoughtful design. The fit is impeccable, because it tapers slightly toward the bottom. This gives it a sleek look and, for me, it’s a very functional shape. Unlike most packs which dwarf me, the Kilimanjaro is low-profile and doesn’t stick out past my body, preventing it from getting caught on brush and branches. The pack is comfortable, too. It has padded fully adjustable shoulder straps, and lightweight chest and waist straps integrated seamlessly into the design. The look is a modern twist on slightly retro rucksack styling, and is made of durable water resistant nylon/cotton canvas with a tough leather base. The Kilimanjaro is
WHY GO: It’s a destination for brook trout and lake trout, where there’s a chance for catching trophies of either species. ACCESS: There are four access points on the lake. There’s a boat launch (as well as a vault privy) located at Birch Point, near the south end of the lake. This is a day use area only. All access points are located on the west side of the lake, off Hwy. 585. Head north on Hwy. 585 from Hwy. 17, just west of Nipigon. The north end access has a fish cleaning station. And there are two accesses on Male Creek, one on the north side of the stream and the other on the south side. VITALS: Jessie Lake, northeast of Thunder Bay, Ontario, is a widening of the Nipigon River, located between two power
dams, Pine Portage dam to the north and Cameron Falls to the south. It’s a 2,311acre lake with a maximum depth of 140 feet and an average depth of 44 feet. FISH SPECIES PRESENT: Brook trout, burbot, lake trout, lake whitefish, round whitefish, white sucker, lake herring and rainbow smelt. Historic records indicate the presence of walleye, sauger, yellow perch and northern pike, though none of these species have been observed for years. TROUT ACTION: According to Tom Savioja, a fish and wildlife technical specialist for the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, the section of the Nipigon River, between Pine Portage dam and the north end of Jessie Lake, is very good for both lake trout and brook trout. THE LINE OF THE LANDSCAPE
Iceland’s Southern Coast Story and photos by

Finally, a place that felt free from mankind. Where steam whiffs up from hills and mountains, summer sunlight runs amok with circadian rhythms, erupting lava forms new islands, earthquakes shift steadily erupting geysers, and volcanic ash freezes into blotchy black striations on icy blue glaciers. Iceland continually reminded me of places I had been before and places I hadn’t. The vibrantly green hillsides, dotted with fuzzy sheep, looked like pictures of New Zealand. Waterfalls draped over vertiginous cliffs emitting rainbow-laced spray above inky volcanic rock and thickly verdant plants elicited the Hawaii from commercials. Heavy, oozing fog floundered along the coastline,

ebbing and flowing beneath the blue sky like the tides below, reminiscent of the Northern California coast. Rolling hills and flat prairie-like chunks of land extended to high, jagged mountains in the distance, evocative of northwestern Montana. The landscape takes center stage in Iceland, its oddities embraced rather than fought. Hot water from any tap emits a sulfuric, eggy odor from its steaming, underground origins. Wastewater from Svartsengi, a geothermal energy plant, is pumped into a basin amidst stubbled lava, creating the Blue Lagoon. The pools of milky blue saline water maintained an air of serenity, despite the tourists taking pictures from the restaurant rooftop, bundled in winter parkas, while bathers in bikinis

My husband and I rented a car and drove southeast on the Ring Road, which circles around the country and stays close to the sea on the southern coast. Only in the 1970s did the entire road become paved. Many bridges were just one lane and rattled as we crossed rivers descending from the interior’s glacial stirrings. Hay bales wrapped in glistening white plastic dotted the landscape, rhythmically placed across the freshly shorn fields. Vibrant lupines blanketed the roadsides, as the ground became purple until mountains rose in the north or rocks led to the strand on the other side of the road. Seeing these familiar blossoms reminded me of my home in northern Minnesota. In an age of island manufacturing, where man creates his own artificial islands (Japan’s Kansai International Airport in Osaka Bay and Dubai’s Palm Islands in the Persian Gulf), Iceland gains new terrain from geological processes. The island of Surtsey erupted from the ocean floor in 1963, southwest of Heimey, the largest of the Westman Islands off Iceland’s southern coast. Since then, the island’s size has ebbed from one square mile to half that, but its elevation still reaches over 500 feet above the waves. Vegetation wasted no time in colonization, as the volcanic lump is coated in growing things, with names like sea sandwort, wooly willow, sea lyme grass, arctic fescue and cold eyebright. Sea rockets (Cakile arctica) were found just two years after the island emerged from the ocean depths. We found our own patches of wooly willow by the Skaftafellsjökull, a slender finger of the mighty Vatnajökull, one of Europe’s largest glaciers. Its leaves were brightly green, yet covered in white fuzz, growing mere inches above the lichens and mosses, as most endemic species in Iceland do, with wildflowers miniscule in size and close to the ground. Harebells poked up sporadically, another reminder of Lake Superior’s shore.
Before reaching these low-lying plants, the glacier was so smooth and ash-filled in places that the ice looked like sloping granite. But freshly melted water dripped off the edges and flowed through narrow cracks that broadened in areas to form fast-flowing streams and moulins, vertical shafts bored through the ice. The water gouged ghostly holes, leaving dark, shadowy perforations. Turbid with sediment, the rivulets of glacier water were the color of milky coffee, riffled by stones and chunks of ice. By the sea, columns of basalt rose in a serrated line, with small ledges covered in hummocks of lime green grass and minute white and yellow flowers, home to nesting puffins. They dove from their nests— beaks brightly red, feet webbed orange triangles—to the ocean’s gray surface, even more graceful under water than above. Bundled in fleece (though it was July) we sat on the beach of smoothly rounded pebbles and watched their descent from cliff to pallid water. But even here, the land is not as it seems, free from man’s meddling hand. The lushly abundant lupine are an invasive species, native to Alaska and Canada, and brought to Iceland in the late 1800s. Used to ease erosion and put nitrogen back into the soil, the plant spread rapidly, both on its own and with the Forestry Service’s help. Now, the plant is causing problems, leaving no room for native species, exemplified by the near extermination of the bilberry plant. The crowding height of the lupine also causes the shady demise of lichens, mosses and low shrubs, blocked from an already scant sun. The erosion predicament stems from the initial settling of Iceland over one thousand years ago, when nearly all of the trees were converted into homes and firewood, denuding the land for wind and water to take their course. Barren, otherworldly scenes and tax breaks draw an array of filmmakers, whether to document retreating ice or film for Hollywood. Our glacier-hiking guide, Sigurdur, told us this abundance of film crews meant vast environmental damages in some instances, while other teams were

When we visited Jökulsarlon, a glacial lagoon flanked by Skaftafell National Park and the ocean, the water was powerfully still as tips of icebergs peaked above the smooth surface. A slab of ice jettisoned off, grinding and crumpling, the water now rippling out, followed by more silence in the fading light of an Arctic night. But in 2002, the lagoon became an icy racetrack for supercars, as film crews frustrated by unusually warm winter temperatures dammed the lagoon from the incoming trickle of seawater so it would freeze. The result was a classic James Bond car chase in “Die Another Day,” complete with Jaguars and Aston Martins growling across the smooth ice, against a backdrop of blue skies and wrinkled glaciers. As we walked across the glacial till to the Solheim glacier, Sigurdur noted that, “Last year, this is where the ice began and we put on our crampons.” Due to the retreating snow and ice, we were still a quarter of a mile away.
Perhaps man’s meddling hands are just as evident in Iceland as anywhere else, only investigation and information are requisite to understand the interaction between inhabitants and the inhabited. Humans have always sought protection and comfort; only the means have changed over time, from cutting down trees for shelter and heat to bringing in money from tourists and aluminum smelters. After discovering the nature of Iceland’s purple fields, I examined the abundant lupine along Lake Superior’s North Shore, the blooms I have admired since childhood. It turns out they too, are just an invasive species. Obstructing native plants, transferred with the wanderlust of mankind, the lupines tell a hidden tale of our altered surroundings. Iceland made me realize that sometimes even the places that seem wildest of all bear hidden scars.

Strange Tales Chilly Wine: Cold-Hardy Grapes and Vineyards By Elle AndraWarner
When someone mentions vineyards, wineries and wine tastings, the wine regions of places like California, Chile, France or Canada’s Okanagan and Niagara come to mind, not images of harvesting wine grapes in the winter cold climates of the Northern Wilds. Yet, there are vineyards and wineries in northern Minnesota that make award-winning wine with northern-grown grapes. For decades, University of Minnesota (U of M) has been a leader in developing cold-hardy grapes. I do enjoy a glass of wine, but it wasn’t until this past summer that I attended my first official wine tasting and got hooked as a “wine tourist,” a term used by tourism people for those who visit a winery on their travels (between 2000-2010, there were 27 million wine tourists in the U.S.). Just for fun, after doing wine tastings in five different places this summer, I did some research to see if there were any vineyards and wineries in northern Minnesota and was surprised to learn there were—and that most of their grapes were developed by U of M. “Cold-hardy grape development has been a research area for the University of Minnesota for a long time. Early cultivars were released in the 1940s [Bluebell 1944] and were targeted for home use. In the 1970s, additional table grape cultivars [Edelweiss & Swenson Red) were released with Elmer Swenson. It was not until 1996 that the first truly wine grape variety, Frontenac, was released to the public,” said Matthew Clark, the project director of U of M’s Grape Breeding and Enology Program. (Wisconsin farmer Elmer Swenson, the “godfather of cold-hardy grapes,” began breeding grapes on his farm in 1943 intercrossing French hybrid grapes with Minnesota’s wild ones; in 1969, he joined forces with U of M). Though the U of M had been researching grapes since 1908, the official cold-grape breeding program was launched in 1985 when the Minnesota Legislature directed the university to specifically research grape growing and wine production in cold climates. Since then, U of M has developed five cold-grape varieties: Frontenac (red/ rose/port), Frontenac gris (white), Frontenac blanc (white), La Crescent (white), and Marquette (red). Next year, U of M plans to release its newest cold-hardy grape, MN 1285 (yet to be named) after a 20-year breeding program.

Marquette grapes are one of five cold-grape varieties used to make wine. | U OF M “Northern latitudes can be challenging for grape growers with a continental climate. We share a similar latitude to wine growing regions in Europe, but are greatly affected by the polar weather patterns,” said Clark. “Breeding grapes for this region is focused on: avoiding late spring frosts, ability to fully ripen in a shortened growing season, disease and pest resistance, winter hardiness and fine wine quality traits.” In 1978, Minnesota’s first commercial winery exclusively growing and making wine from cold-hardy Minnesota grapes was established. By 1990, there were only two such wineries. Today, there are over 70 registered wine producers in Minnesota. In 2009, the world’s first International Cold Climate Wine Competition (ICCWC)—the only one in the world dedicated to wines made from cold-hardy grape varieties—was held in St. Paul. At the 2015 competition, there were 309 cold-climate wines from 62 commercial wineries. One of Minnesota’s two northernmost wine producers is the family-run Grape Mill Vineyard & Winery in East Grand Forks. They planted their first 200 vines in 2006 overlooking the banks of the Red Lake River. They now have over 1,600 grapevines growing five different cold-hardy grapes. Their biggest seller is their Huntsville BIG RED wine, a blend of Frontenac and Marquette grapes.
NORTHERN WILDS
The other northernmost vineyard is the Two Fools Vineyard which started as a hobby and now produces 16 different award-winning wines (7 Red, 6 White, 2 Fruit and 1 Dessert). The 3 l/2-acre vineyard of cold-hardy grapes, mostly Frontenac and Marquette, is located between Thief River Falls and Plummer. Minnesota’s largest winery is the 160acre Carlos Creek Winery in Alexandria (home also of the famous Kensington Runestone). Voted Minnesota’s Best Winery by a WCCO-TV poll, its 20-acre vineyard wraps around the wine-tasting room. Each September, the winery hosts the annual Grape Stomp & Fall Festival, attended by 15,000 visitors. Over 300 two-person teams stomp on 10,000 plus pounds of grapes. While there are no vineyards or wineries yet in Northwestern Ontario, there is one businessman who is trying to produce a Thunder Bay grape that could be blended with Ontario and/or Chilean wines (he already owns a successful winery in Chile). Years ago, who could have imagined our neck of the woods as an award-winning wine-producing region? Visit www.mnhardy.umn.edu/varieties/fruit/grapes for more info.

Cultivating Wine Grapes The U of M is recognized as one of the top wine grape research programs in the country, with the goal of developing high-quality, cold-hardy and disease-resistant wine grape cultivars. The wine grape breeding program began in the mid’70s, and in 2000, an enology lab and research winery opened at the Horticultural Research Center. Today more than 12,000 experimental vines are cultivated on 12 acres. Thousands of seedlings are produced each year using a diverse genetic base that includes classic Vitis vinifera cultivars, quality French hybrids, and hardy, disease-resistant selections based on Vitis riparia, Minnesota’s native grape.

If it’s warm or if it’s raining or we are running through beaver ponds—as the case was this fall—it’s good training. The only time it’s not good training would be if conditions are not safe (too icy), or we teach the dogs to do something we don’t want them to do—even if inadvertently (like turn around in the middle of the trail). Then, when it’s raining or dumping snow or warm or brutal cold during a race, we know we trained properly. It helps us keep a positive attitude as well—there’s probably such a thing as a perfect trail, but how many times do we actually get to run on a perfect trail? The Gunflint Mail Run, which took place on Jan. 9, saw 10 teams run the 12-dog, 100-mile race and 13 teams run the 8-dog, 60-mile race. Matt and I entered a team in each class. My 8-dog team consisted of a few older dogs, a couple of young dogs who had little race experience and a few race veterans, but in general, was more of a “B” team. Matt had 10 race veterans and two dogs new to racing that we hoped might make the Beargrease team. Because the Beargrease requires a 14-dog team, we wanted to train up as many of our dogs as possible to have a large pool of race-ready dogs. Some highlights from my race included: watching Odin Jorgenson try to finish changing my sled runners about three minutes before my start time. At one point, Odin was supposed to go help another team get to the starting chute, but my runners were only half on the sled and hardly budging. He looked at me and looked at my runners and stayed to get the job done. Thanks, Odin. Later, on the trail, in a small moment of chaos, I did a head-on pass going straight down a hill. At the bottom, another team was parked. It’s difficult to stop at the bottom of a steep hill and I couldn’t stop. There was ski pole sticking out the side of Adam Treeful’s sled, which caught on my sled bow and started dragging down the trail. It took me 100 feet to stop my team and by the time I did, the ski pole was destroyed. Sorry about that pole, Adam. The 12-dog teams had to run through a small mud hole, which was deep enough that the dogs had to swim and the mushers had to wade. After the first loop, dogs came back all iced up and one musher reported going through the mud on her stomach. The race judges took a vote and
The author’s husband, Matt Schmidt, finished the 12-dog race in 2nd place. | NACE HAGEMANN almost all the mushers voted to run through the mud pond again, rather than shorten the course. Reports from the second loop included one musher wading through the water up to his waist to retrieve his team from the trees on the side of the pond, while another musher had frostbite on his feet by the end of the race (temps were dipping below zero by the time the race finished). Perhaps it was our many run-ins with open water this fall, but our team didn’t have any problems—they ran through—just as we trained them to do. And while Matt’s feet were wet, he came through okay, too. The highlight of Matt’s race was on the second leg, when he tried tossing some Little Debbie snacks to volunteers who were helping at the turn-around. Somehow the tossing action caused his sled to overturn and he did the turn around on his stomach. Turns out the volunteers never even saw the treats—just a musher getting dragged behind his team.

NORTHERN WILDS
As of now, we’ve trained almost 1,200 miles this year and in the warm, cold, rain and snow. We have three weeks until the Beargrease, which will be 380 miles this year, starting Jan. 31. This will be my second Beargrease Marathon and I go into it knowing what to expect—though this doesn’t make it any easier. The race will be different every year and I look forward to what this year’s adventure brings.

Sometimes, the many factors that play into dog racing come together for a team, and they did for Matt and his team that night. By the time he was half-way through the second loop of the race, he could feel the team charging ahead, not slowing down. He passed two teams on the way back to the finish and when the team reached Poplar Lake, he could see the first place team’s headlamp up ahead. The lake wasn’t quite long enough though—Matt’s team came in less than two minutes behind Ward Wallin, putting Matt in second place.

As the only residents on Flour Lake, and nestled in within the 3 million acres of the Superior National Forest, you can look forward to the quiet and solitude offered only from a true wilderness setting. Golden Eagle Lodge Nordic Ski Center is world class, nationally-known, and silent sports only. We are located on the Central Gunflint Ski Trail System, a well-marked network of more than 70km of beautifully groomed trails that begin right from your cabin’s doorstep. This trail system was built specifically for cross-country skiing and
is tracked for both traditional and skate skiers alike. All ski trail passes are offered at no charge to our cabin guests! We offer complete skiing and snowshoe rentals for all ages, a heated ski waxing room, a trail lit 7 days a week, and a private use sauna. All our modern housekeeping cabins have a fireplace wood stove, gas, or electric fireplace. We know much time, effort, and expense is invested in a vacation. We would be honored if you considered us as your vacation destination. We go out of our way to ensure every aspect of your visit will convince you to come back and see us again. You won’t be disappointed!
