JULY 2020
NORTHERN WILDS
Summer’s here! Don’t miss it. Summer is fleeting in the Northern Wilds. We often joke about getting a couple of days or a week of warm weather, but it’s fair to say that honest-to-goodness summer weather generally lasts about six weeks. That means summer is happening now. July is usually marked by a surge of visitors on the North Shore. We have no reason to believe it will be any different this year. What is different is that some destinations are either unavailable or difficult to reach due to the many complications of the pandemic. At this writing, the border with Canada is closed until July 21. An announcement to extend that closure would not be a surprise. Isle Royale National Park, which is open to boaters and campers, is only accessible by private boat or float plane, because the ferry services are not running. Some sites, such as the Cross River Heritage Museum, have chosen not to open this year. Many others have limited hours or reduced capacity. The same is true for stores and restaurants. Do you have a question for one of our writers? Or an interesting photo, recipe, or story you’d like to share with Northern Wilds? Please send it to storyideas@northernwilds.com.
Such limitations don’t seem to be deterring North Shore visitors, who are welcome, as always. Most folks seem to take the adjustments to “normal” in stride. They appear to be finding new ways to enjoy their time on the Shore. By all accounts, participation in outdoor activities such as hiking, canoe tripping and fishing significantly increased this

year. These are things that people can safely enjoy with others while maintaining physical distance. Better still, they may make new habits that will allow them to continue enjoying the outdoors in the future. Unfortunately, some folks have barriers to enjoying outdoor activities. In this issue, you’ll find a story about a woman who is doing a thru-hike of the Superior Hiking Trail as part of an effort to encourage people of color to get outside. She says that one reason many choose not to enjoy outdoor activities is because, even in Minnesota, they don’t feel safe in doing so. We believe that needs to change. Inside, you’ll find a full selection of summer reading, including a wonderful photo essay on moths, a tale of how to introduce kids to fishing and a photo feature about why we’re wearing masks. Columnist Chuck Viren shares his secrets for canoe country cooking (Hint: Don’t volunteer to carry his food pack). Julia Prinselaar teaches us about an invasive species that’s good to eat. Gord Ellis tells us how to choose a fishing guide. And Elle Andra-Warner explains why you should hug a tree. Since you shouldn’t be hugging Grandma right now, why not?—Shawn Perich and Amber Pratt

Melanie Luc: Of milkweed and monarchs THUNDER BAY—The north side home of Melanie Luc and her family is not noticeably different from many a Thunder Bay dwelling-—unless, that is, you happen to visit during the summer and see enclosure after enclosure of chrysalises waiting to hatch into adult monarch butterflies. Seeing a fully-grown butterfly emerge from a chrysalis is a magical experience, but it is also part of a great deal of human assistance by Luc, beginning with the deliberate planting of milkweed in her front and back yards. Every early summer, millions of monarch butterflies migrate northward from Mexico. Thunder Bay is but one of countless stops along the way to feed, breed and for the females, to lay eggs. “Once the monarchs hatch,” Luc explains, “they go into reproductive mode and lay more eggs, and so it goes.” Luc carefully collects eggs and provides milkweed leaves— the exclusive diet of monarch caterpillars— for the voracious young to feed on as they prepare to become chrysalises. “From chrysalis to adult monarch takes about two weeks,” she adds. “I bring the eggs inside where they can hatch in safety.” The monarch is a unique insect in that it is toxic, or at least very irritating to any predator that tries to eat one. Ironically, this is both a blessing and a curse: Though adult monarchs feed off different flowering plants, they have evolved to depend solely for their toxicity on milkweed, a plant threatened by herbicides, urbanization and the cultivation of cash crops. In Mexico, to where the monarchs migrate beginning in late October, the forests of pine and oyamel trees on which the butterflies cluster and winter have been under attack by commercial logging and farming interests. In other words, the butterflies are threatened by habitat destruction on both ends of their journey. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the monarch population has been diminished by some 90 percent since 1990. Extinction is not an impossibility. For Luc, the monarch is both a choice and a symbol. “Thirteen years ago, I was going through breast cancer treatments,” she says. At one point, when she was at a very low ebb, she had a profound spiritual experience involv-

ing butterflies. At a later visit with a friend to a nursery, Luc bought a milkweed plant, which turned out to have monarch eggs on it—and so began Luc’s work with the threatened butterflies.
son, so there is plenty for the caterpillars to eat. By November, Luc’s butterflies have all started their migration to Mexico, an epic journey of thousands of kilometres.
“The chemo(therapy) makes changes in your body,” she reflects. “It’s like I was given a second chance at life, becoming a new me, like these caterpillars become butterflies.” After the first year as she watched, fascinated, the progress of the insects from egg to mature adult, Luc began bringing the eggs inside to protect the caterpillars from insect predators and to help propagate the butterflies. In that supportive environment, the monarchs thrived, and Luc’s summer became a never-ending chain of work: “(The caterpillars) devour the leaves very quickly, the bigger they get,” she says. “and you cannot let them run out, so it becomes a full-time job, but a worthwhile, rewarding one. I usually have a 90 percent success rate, where out in the wild they only have 10 percent.” Fortunately, the milkweed plants continue producing leaves right up to the frost sea-
“The early hatchers reproduce,” she says. “The later ones don’t mature sexually, but save their energy for the migration.” These late hatchers will live for eight months, while the usual summer life span is three to four weeks. “Once they have overwintered in Mexico and the daylight increases, then they will start to reproduce,” she says. “They start their migration back to their summer homes, reproducing along the way. I never see the same butterflies return once released. The ones coming north are four generations later.” Even with all the protection Luc gives her charges, accidents will happen. Two years ago, a female released in Luc’s garden lost most of her wing on one side, and was unable to fly.
Female monarch with her new wings. | MELANIE LUC I did save some wings from a dead butterfly just for this purpose, my daughter and I decided to see if we could help her.” Some contact cement, baby powder and deft work with a cutting knife, and the young female was able to fly aloft with the aid of the wing of a deceased male. Luc recognizes that she is part of a small army of monarch helpers, a number of whom live in the Thunder Bay area. “I haven’t kept track of the numbers that I have raised,” Luc reflects, “but it has steadily gone up in the last 13 years. Last year was a stellar year for everyone that I spoke to, and I alone released over 450.”—Peter Fergus-Moore
“I had watched some videos on Youtube of repairing broken wings,” she says. “Since

7 MILES • 4-5 HOURS • INTERMEDIATE WWW.FS.USDA.GOV This granite peak is part of a large rock formation known as the Duluth Complex in the Misquah Hills, according to the U.S. Forest service, and is located within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The hike to the summit is an out-and-back hike which runs 3.5 miles to the summit. “You will gradually climb for the first 2.5 to 3 miles,” says the U.S. Forest Service “Eagle Mountain/Brule Lake Trails” pamphlet, available at ranger stations and online. “For the last half mile, the trail is steeper and rocky. Along the flat ridge-top are excellent vistas,” the pamphlet reads. The official high point is marked by a brass survey disk on the west side of the ridge. As this hike enters into the BWCAW, a free self-issue permit is required and can be found at the trailhead kiosk. Driving directions: From Highway 61, turn north on Caribou Trail (Cty. Rd. 4) just north of Lutsen. Follow Caribou Trail until it ends at Forest Road 170 and turn right. Follow FR 170 for 3.5 miles to the Eagle Mountain trailhead parking lot. Things to know: This is a wilderness trail, which means the trail tread will be more rugged and less maintained than other trails. Most cell phones will not receive a signal inside the BWCAW. Sturdy footwear with good grip and trekking poles recommended. This short hike would also make a great overnight backpacking trip in the BWCAW
SUPERIOR HIKING TRAIL: THE LAKEWALK
This 1.4 mile stretch of the Superior Hiking Trail runs on the beach of Lake Superior through the cobble. “This is the only part of the SHT on Lake Superior except Duluth’s Lakewalk,” in Canal Park, according to the Eighth Edition of the Guide to the Superior Hiking Trail. “Notice the different surge levels up the beach from storms and winds,” the guide recommends. This stretch of trail also offers good spring birding, bog areas, and crosses rock outcroppings that reach out into Lake Superior. There is no trailhead at the Lakewalk, so a short hike down to the lake must also be done. The closest trailhead to Lakewalk is the Kadunce River Wayside. Follow the .7mile spur trail up to the Superior Hiking Trail, head right or north along the Kadunce River another 2.5 miles to the western end of the Lakewalk. The hike down to Lake Superior is beautiful, following the gorgeous gorge of the Kadunce River, then passing through birch and fir forests, an expansive field known as “Blueberry Overlook” with epic views of Lake Superior. Driving directions: From Grand Marais, travel north on Highway 61 nine miles to the Kadunce River Wayside, which is located on the left side of the highway. Things to know: From Kadunce River Wayside, the trail will climb about 50 feet before dropping 350 feet in elevation, so the trip back will be harder. Vince Ekroot, whose family owned the former Windigo Lodge on the Trail, started guiding at age 12. | SUBMITTED
Vince Ekroot: A job on the water GUNFLINT TRAIL— For some folks in the Northern Wilds, going fishing is all in a day’s work. One of them is Gunflint Trail fishing guide Vince Ekroot, proprietor of Little Vince’s Guide Service. “Guiding has been my fulltime job since 1987,” he says. Ekroot, whose family owned the former Windigo Lodge on the Trail, started guiding at age 12 and is now “62 going on 20.” Aside from a four-year stint in the Army and a year teaching high school in Superior, Wisc., he’s lived and fished on the North Shore. Although he used to do construction work in the off season for guiding, he now focuses on fishing. Most of his clients come during the open water months, but he takes out ice anglers as well. The extremities of winter weather make guiding for ice fishing a dicey proposition. “No one wants to go fishing when it’s 30 below,” Ekroot said. “The fish bite better on nice days, anyway.” On a typical summer day, Ekroot hits the water at 10 a.m., which allows him some morning prep time. He also finds that stream trout in lakes, his fishing specialty, seem to bite best at midday. He’s willing to stay out until dark, but not many clients choose to do so. While trout fishing is his favorite, he also takes customers for walleyes, smallmouth bass and even bluegills. Generally, he prefers to fish smaller lakes in the mid-Trail area. Fish of the aforementioned species are abundant, but some, especially walleyes, are less likely to reach trophy sizes than in large lakes like Saganaga. That’s just fine with Ekroot, who tries to provide lots of action so his clients catch plenty of keepers. “Most of my customers want to take home some fish,” he said. Fishing pressure is so light on most mid-Trail lakes that he believes the majority of fish die of old age, rather than being caught by anglers. He said catching a limit usually isn’t a problem. He encourages his customers to throw back the biggest ones and keep mid-sized fish, which generally are the best-tasting.
Over the course of his career, Ekroot has seen some changes among visitors to the Gunflint Trail and how they choose to spend their outdoor time. When he was younger, fishing was the primary form of recreation. Today, far fewer visitors go fishing. That said, most of his spring and fall customers are dedicated anglers. During the summer, he often takes out young families, sometimes for their first fishing experience. “If they pay attention, they’ll learn something,” he said. However, he also notes that one of the changes he’s noticed over the years is that most of today’s kids have little patience, because they are used to living in a world of instant gratification. He’s also observed today’s adults are less willing to expend some extra effort to get off the beaten path and reach better fishing. Few of his day trip customers are willing to cross one or two portages to reach lakes within the BWCAW. They also prefer to fish from the comfort of a boat rather than a canoe. Has the fishing changed during the course of his career? For Ekroot the biggest change has been the expansion of smallmouth bass in Gunflint area lakes, especially his beloved Birch Lake. Hungry bass have eliminated once abundant crayfish and minnow populations that allowed rainbow trout stocked there to grow to trophy sizes. He still catches trout in Birch, but they aren’t as big as they used to be. While folks hire a guide to take them fishing, years of experience has taught Ekroot that his social skills are as important as his angling ability. “I get a lot of people and they have different attitudes,” he said. “My job is to entertain them and make sure they have a good time. When we meet, I try to figure out what they want out of their day on the water.” Apparently, he’s pretty good at meeting his customer’s expectations, because he stays busy and has lots of repeat business. This summer, has been different, he said, because he’s had plenty of business, but few advance bookings. Given the uncertainty of the times, folks seem less willing to plan ahead. Amanda Swanson driving the Vista Star. Shehas had her captain’s license for 15 years and began with Vista as a deckhand back in 1999. | SUBMITTED
E XPL O RE T HE SO UT H SHO RE
located in the largest Marine Conservation Area in the world
DULUTH— When you picture a boat captain, what comes to mind? Perhaps a weathered old man with a white beard and a leathery face hardened by the sea? That’s a fair guess. But that’s not what you’ll encounter at the Vista Fleet in Duluth. Captain Amanda Swanson doesn’t have a beard, and at just 5-foot 1-3/4 inches tall, she often gets overlooked as she stands at the stern of the Vista Star to greet passengers. In fact, she’s often peppered with backhanded questions, like, “Who is our captain today?” or “Is this your first time driving the boat?” The diminutive captain has heard it all, but she shrugs it off. She has had her captain’s license for 15 years and began with Vista as a deckhand back in 1999. Fresh out of high school in ‘99, Swanson was looking for a summer job and had connections at Vista, although prior to that, she wasn’t really into boats. But my, how things have changed! “I quickly fell in love with the lake, the history of the Twin Ports, the people that I worked with and the ships,” Swanson said. “We’re all big boat nerds.” Swanson worked for six seasons as a deckhand at the Vista Fleet, with no real ambition of advancing her maritime career. That all changed the day she docked the Vista Star. “As a deckhand, we would get a lot of wheel time on the boats,” she recalled. “In 2004, I got an opportunity to dock the Vista Star under the guidance of the captain. Once the lines were secured, I knew what I wanted to do next.” In 2005, she got her captain’s license and began piloting the 78-foot Vista King. “Driving a large boat on Lake Superior is rewarding,” Swanson said. “Breaking down the gender stereotype and proving that women are just as capable of being boat
captains as men is something I am incredibly proud to be a part of.” Her small stature doesn’t help garner respect. In fact, she needed a stool while operating the Vista King. “When I first started driving the Vista King, everything was going really well, but I was struggling with docking,” Swanson said. “I couldn’t see the dock very well out the windows of the pilothouse. We had this wooden stool that was used as a step for passengers at the Barker’s Island dock. One of the captains suggested that I use it and sure enough, that next docking was perfect! So, we named it ‘Amanda’s Little Helper’ and I used it every day on the Vista King. I no longer need the stool for the Vista Star, but I keep it in the pilothouse so the kids can see out the windows when they get behind the wheel.” Over the years, Swanson has seen a lot of passengers and a lot of crazy days on Lake Superior. Fog, inclement weather and northeast winds roaring right through the Lift Bridge make her job extra challenging. But when asked about memorable experiences over the years, it was the crew that came to mind. “I could tell you a hundred Vista stories, but at the end of the day, it’s the relationships I’ve developed with the crew members over the years that mean the most to me. This year, Vista Fleet will be open for public cruises, but operating at a limited capacity, in addition to hosting a number of private cruises. Captain Amanda will be at the helm when needed this season, but her primary focus will be behind the scenes coordinating the safety training and drills for the crew. So if you’re boarding a big boat and being welcomed by a little woman, don’t assume she’s a deckhand or a novice. Captain Amanda has it under control!—Joe Shead

GRAND MARAIS— With a christening toast of sparkling grape juice, the U.S. Border Patrol launched a 27-foot, full cabin SAFE boat in Grand Marais Harbor May 28. Operated by a crew of three, the boat will be located in Grand Marais for the duration of the summer. Identified by a number, rather than a name, the boat is dedicated to Patrol Inspector Lobdell, who was shot and killed instantly on the night of December 25, 1928, near Roseau, Minnesota. It is the first time the Border Patrol has stationed a boat here since 2005. The boat will patrol from Grand Marais to the border, as well as along the border to Isle Royale. The main purpose of its mission is to ensure terrorists or weapons of terror do not enter the U.S. by way of Lake Superior. They will also funnel boaters entering from Canada through a port of entry. Boaters may also check in with their phone by using the ROAM app, which is available free from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
The Border Patrol also has a boat stationed at Sault, Ste. Marie, Mich. Ed Fowler, patrol agent in charge at Grand Marais, says while Isle Royale is actually the responsibility of Soo station, (Grand Marais is in the Border Patrol’s Grand Forks Sector and Michigan waters, including the island, are in the Detroit Sector), there is an agreement between the sectors to allow the Grand Marais boat to patrol there. The new craft has some first responder capabilities and can respond to vessels in distress. The boat can assist the Coast Guard with rescue operations, as well. Fowler said that while border enforcement has been enhanced by technology in recent years, there is still a reason to have a physical presence on the water. “The presence of the boat makes lawless people think twice,” he said. “And it encourages law-abiding people to report to a port of entry.”—Shawn Perich

Inspectors educate boaters, protect lakes GRAND MARAIS— When you are launching a boat in Lake Superior or an inland lake, you may encounter a friendly individual who saunters over to ask a few questions about your boat and trailer. Actually, that friendly individual is interested in what may be hitching a ride on your rig—aquatic invasive species such as spiny water fleas, zebra mussels or rusty crayfish. The hope is to prevent these stowaways from entering waters where they are presently not found. Amanda Weberg, Aquatic Invasive Species coordinator with the Cook County Soil and Water Conservation District, says there are three inspectors in Cook County and three in Lake County this summer. They move around to various public launch sites. In past years, there were also volunteer inspectors from various lake associations, but that portion of the program is on hold due to Covid-19 concerns. Aquatic invasive species may be found in livewells or bilge water, which is why Clean, Drain and Dry is the program’s slogan. Inspectors check to make sure drain plugs have been removed and livewells emptied of water before a boat enters or after it leaves a lake. They may look for bits of aquatic vegetation stuck to boats or trailers or even zebra mussels attached to boats. If they find something, they can verbally deny access or notify appropriate authorities. The main goal of watercraft inspections is to change boater’s behavior to do the prevention methods even when an inspector is not at the landing.
On the North Shore, actually discovering a hitchhiking invasive is rare, but inspectors can have a friendly conversation about the risks they pose to local waters. They can also inform boaters about the free boat wash service available at Rockwood Lodge on the Gunflint Trail. And the inspectors have been having lots of conversations. “The first three weeks of the season were a lot busier at the landings than previous years,” Weberg said. “Everyone has been compliant and very positive about the inspections.” While the North Shore has been largely spared from introductions of aquatic invasive species, a number of species have been documented in Lake Superior. They are mainly found in the big lake’s warmer bays and estuaries, rather than the cold waters of the North Shore. One exception is the spiny water flea, which has been discovered in some Cook County lakes. Another invader found in a few Cook County lakes is the rusty crayfish, which can become overwhelmingly abundant. Weberg believes the inspections program, which has been in place since 2016, is working to slow the spread of aquatic invasive species. The conversations boaters have with inspectors raise their awareness and encourage them to take the steps necessary to rid their watercraft of unwanted aquatic hitchhikers. “People don’t want to see these things spread in our lakes,” said Cook County in-

Discoveries of new infesta-
tions and new species have slowed in recent years, likely due to statewide preventive efforts such as boater education, watercraft inspections and watercraft decontamination sites. The local effort is funded by state aid distributed to counties.—Shawn Perich

Points North Welcome wants the outdoors welcome all By Shawn Perich
On July 4, Crystal Gail Welcome of Grand Rapids, Minn. will begin a 300-mile thru-hike of the Superior Hiking Trail. Before embarking on her adventure, Welcome felt compelled to notify local law enforcement that she would be on the trail. While most hikers might consider this an unusual step to take, for Welcome, it’s a wise precaution. She is Black. A portion of her letter to local law enforcement reads: “I understand that there is a great deal of racial tension in the U.S. I am aware that as a Black solo hiker, I might face adversity and possible prejudice on the trail—however, I do not anticipate threats or violence, and I’d ask that if needed you’d intervene promptly… “Sadly, we live in a time where such a letter needs to be written in advance. I have attached a photo of myself in hiking gear and ask that if I am seen on the trail that you DO NOT shoot me. Aside from backpacking gear, I will be carrying the following items: bear spray, a pocket-knife, and hiking poles. None of these items are ‘weapons.’” Welcome is making the thru-hike as a fundraiser for People of the Global Majority in the Outdoors, Nature and the Environment (PGM ONE), an organization that “envisions a world that centers, values, uplifts, and empowers those who are most impacted by environmental harm and climate change—and in particular black, indigenous, and people of color/of the global majority—to lead the way toward environmental justice and collective liberation.”
Crystal Gail Welcome is planning to thru-hike the Superior Hiking Trail in July to encourage people of color to enjoy the outdoors. | SUBMITTED She also wants to encourage more people of color to enjoy the outdoors. This is no small task. For years, outdoor advocates, who are predominately white, have struggled to find ways to make outdoor activities inclusive of people of color. It is fair to say most of their efforts have had limited success. Welcome suggests
one reason is that people of color historically haven’t considered the outdoors a safe place. For Blacks, the dangerous paths escaped slaves followed along the Underground Railroad and the lonely locations of lynching were outdoors. Welcome wants to change the perception that the outdoors are unsafe through example.
“In order to get more people of color outdoors, they need to see more people of color outdoors,” she said. “We need to rebuild our connection to Nature.” While living in Georgia before moving to Minnesota to accept an internship a year ago, she led youth trips for kayaking, stand up paddleboards, backpacking and camping. She brought kids on overnight camping trips

Welcome is no stranger to long distance hiking. She has hiked portions of the Appalachian Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail. On those hikes, she learned that people of color can have unfriendly encounters with other outdoor users.
As she mentioned in her letter to local law enforcement, Welcome doesn’t anticipate any negative or threatening encounters on the North Shore. She is concerned that portions of the Superior Hiking Trail pass through private property and that a landowner might be surprised to see a Black person on their land. She mentioned the recent incident in New York’s Central Park where a woman called the police on Minnesota's a Black birdwatcher when he asked Premiere her to leash her dog, as required byHiking park rules. MINNOW BOY BY ERIC KAHKONEN
Aleksi Kahkonen enjoys a day in the boat. | ERIC KAHKONEN
When I close my eyes I can instantly teleport myself to being a kid in the outdoors. I can picture my red and white bobber bouncing up and down feverishly, or feel earthworms wriggle through my fingers as I collected them in my Dad’s tobacco can. Those sights sounds and experiences will always be in my memory, and I wouldn’t have traded my childhood for anything. I thought digging worms for an evening’s fishing or walking the autumn woods with my Dad looking for ruffed grouse were just normal activities. Looking back, it was a true gift that my family gave to me. The experiences I had, have carried through right into my adult life, gaining momentum with each passing day. I have set out to introduce and addict my own children to the outdoors. With time spent outdoors becoming less and less of a reality for the average kid I wanted a different life for my children. My wife Erin and I grew up in outdoor families and there was no conceivable option for how we would raise our kids. Don’t get me wrong, the iPad is a strong draw for even our kids, but we have set out to give them some alternative distractions that will provide them entertainment long into the future. Our kids are the ones that dig for
worms and ride along on the snow machine dog sled. Who would have thought that a decade into our journey, that I have probably learned more than I have instructed and gained a tremendous appreciation for how kids approach life. Before fatherhood came along, I had been a fairly active outdoorsy guy, fishing regularly, annual moose hunts, and even years of fur trapping. The first few years as a Dad made these regular activities somewhat of a faint memory. I was becoming more accustomed to diaper bags than tackle bags. My plans for having kids and an active sporting lifestyle seemed overly ambitious and kind of simplistic. I don’t care what anyone tells you, there are times that it is just downright impossible to balance modern family life, work and getting into the outdoors regularly, without some aspect suffering. My initial plan was to turn my young son Mikka into a fishing monster. I pictured him catching fish as a toddler and him deriving immense amounts of amusement from the activity, and before long it would be common place. Then all other pieces would fall into place for regular family trips on the water throughout Northwestern Ontario. Author Eric with Aleksi and a small mouth bass. | ERIC KAHKONEN

TIPS:
Step One: Training a Fisherman My first shrewd step was to purchase a batman fishing rod for him. I am pretty sure he was still in diapers when this happened. I thought it would add that bit of little kid “bling bling” that would make it even more fun for him to use. Time for a reality check. I quickly realized this at the dock, his fun simply came from throwing tackle into the lake and watching it go “Kerplunk.” The look on Daddy’s face made it even better; veins would appear in my forehead and it seemed priceless to him. I didn’t see this coming. Time to rethink this plan. Patience would be required. I had to back off and just enjoy being a dad, gradually working at this introduction to the finer points of angling.
Our little family regularly takes part in our outdoor heritage, and would like to share some of the lessons learned so that others can successfully introduce their kids to a way of life that unfortunately is becoming rarer.
1.
Don’t push your luck. If your kids are cold, tired or bored, go back to the dock. They won’t even want to get in the boat next time if you wait. If you do it right they will drag you out the door in the future. Ten minutes is better than nothing. Don’t forget the sunscreen and warm clothes because the kids certainly won’t remember and it can really save a trip.
Step Two: Hunting 101 When Mikka was a toddler I decided to try grouse hunting. After all, I am just talking about some trail walking on some gentle terrain with my kid. How bad can that be? Subsequently, I have renamed that activity “carrying a screaming child through the forest, while grouse fly away from you.” Apparently if there are leaves on the ground, it can prevent a child’s legs from working. He actually explained this to me as we stood in the woods. How can you argue with that? Through the years, this eventually morphs into walking with a child while he talks the entire time. “Dad that partridge flew because you were walking too loud!” Mikka constructively criticized my hunting efforts as we stumbled along a brush lined trail in search of birds. He failed to see any irony in his statement as he had just finished a half hour story on Spiderman, while being repeatedly told to whisper quietly if at all. It was rare that he did not have fun, unless of course, I ruined it by being impatient with what is going on. I had to embrace the little perks when they happened, like seeing how excited he was by the notion that a deer may be just around the next trail bend. I have learned to adjust my expectations and enjoy the gradual improvements. I started to place more emphasis on just being outside and trying to show him stuff that I thought was neat, such as animal tracks. If we were putting game in the freezer it was a bonus. I found myself walking a tight rope of making it fun for him and fun for me. As years went by I found that our progress was exponential in growth. We could stay out in the boat longer before needing to come home, or walk a little bit further in the woods than we did last year. The battles changed from fishing rods going over board to wanting a new fishing lure tied on every five minutes. Eventually we caught some smallmouth, and grouse were shot, trips started to show the results that sportsman normally measure an outing by. I made little adjustments, like bringing requested ear muffs with us so the shotgun wouldn’t be so loud, and found the little treats that would make the days lunch seem so special even months later. When Mikka was almost four, our family grew with the addition of our youngest son Aleksi and by that time we were starting to gain some momentum on this
Mikka Kahkonen with his replica shotgun and a grouse. | ERIC KAHKONEN outdoor life. It has become a regular practice to go on family fishing trips, or trapping with Daddy; no alternative has existed for Aleksi. Both boys would see when I became excited by something and it fed their own excitement. Daddy was starting to figure it out, not the other way around. I plan most outings around what they can do and no more. My wife Erin and I really try to make it fun, but still try to get across what we are actually trying to do. It has become a regular practice on weekend mornings during hunting season to find the back seat of my crew cab packed full of boys and their toys. Packsacks would be stuffed full of plastic binoculars and walkie talkies, and their hunting vest pockets full of spent shotgun shells. It has become second nature to help with deer butchering and to bring minnow traps into brush-lined creeks in pursuit of bait. The kids now prod me to get outside when laziness starts to raise its ugly head, urging me to build brush shelters and asking to go fishing this weekend. The benefit of kids getting involved in fishing and hunting are obvious. Kids get exercise, generally have a much better appreciation for where their dinner comes from and gratitude for all of the natural world. Many of us forget about the little things that we encounter during a day in the field: the smell of the autumn woods or the flittering sound of a bat whizzing over your hat while you sit in the boat on a July evening. My kids get to experience all of that and I am thrilled to introduce them to it. The sight of them catching fish has become almost more exciting for me than catching one myself. Recently, I’ve found myself in more of a fishing guide role. I bring my kids out on the ice, drill the holes, set up the lines and watch my clients catch all of the fish. Then I proceed to clean their catch. I don’t mind at all; it comes with immense satisfaction to listen to a 6-year old-explain why his one specific ice hole is where all of the fish are located and how he uses his special technique and a lucky rod for finicky March walleye.
2.
Be flexible. If my son wants to fish in a different spot, I consider it. After all, I would rather be fishing in another spot than not fishing at all, and it makes them feel involved in the decisions. If I don’t want to move I try to explain why; it is about learning. I am sure my questions drove my Grandpa nuts.
3.
Show a lot of excitement for what is at hand, whether it is a deer scrape or smallmouth bass. Kids feed off of your excitement. It doesn’t matter how big a fish is or how long a cast was. Kids want to feel like they are successful. Leave the trash talk for your buddies who “catch only small fish.”
4.
Take lots of pictures. My kids love to highjack my cell phone so they can show people their fish pics. Besides, everyone needs a picture of their kids with dew worm mustaches.
5.
Bring lots of snacks. We have special snacks that only happen during hunting and fishing trips. These special treats can lift spirits when there is a lull in the action and it adds to the overall experience.
6.
Find distractions at hand. I have a friend that actually brings two separate minnow pails. He gets his young kids to transfer the minnows from one pail to the other and then suggests they need to go back now. My sons have both spent time as official “Minnow Boy” which gave them the important duty of wrangling bait from the bucket and delivering it to whoever urgently needs it: this mission is absolutely critical. While hunting, Aleksi loves to play with my buck grunt tube. After 10 minutes of listening to deer music it becomes a little tiring, but he is little and it amuses him. Then I get the opportunity to show him how Dad claims it should be used.
7.
Fishing and hunting are not the goals. Being outside and enjoying it are the goals. It can be hard, but try not to get annoyed if they would prefer to put the rod down and just look in the live well or go swimming at the nearby beach.
8.
Save the tough trips for the adults or when they are older than 10. Long walks and frigid temperatures test the mettle of just about anyone. If you don’t want them to have any interest this is a good way to encourage that. This goes for long truck rides, too.
9.
I have made a point of getting my kids some of their own equipment. My boys each have their own tackle boxes, they are slowly learning to look after it themselves and it gives them a sense of ownership. Nothing fancy. Surprise, surprise, little kids treat stuff poorly. My Grandpa gave me a reclaimed spincast rod that I am pretty sure he found at the local dump, but it was mine and it worked. There is plenty of time for expensive casting rods and pro series gear. This also keeps me from going nuts when I see the attention a typical young kid can pay to its care. I even made Mikka his own sized-down replica of my shotgun. I simply shaped and stained a piece of 2x4 and added a copper pipe barrel. Some gullible people on Facebook have even questioned our sanity for giving our 4-year-old a real gun. But he carried it regularly on our hunting trips, and I have made several for our nieces and nephews.
10.
Kids are all about adventure and make-believe. Grouse hunting can easily turn into the pursuit of dangerous grizzly bears; no need to bring reality into it. Besides, how many times can you say that you have checked a trap line with a Jedi carrying a plastic lightsaber?

Wavy-lined Emerald (Synchlora aerata). Wingspan: 0.5 to 1 inch (1.3 to 2.4 cm). This is a beautiful green moth with white lines across its wings. Its caterpillar feeds on a wide variety of plants and has an unusual way to camouflage itself. It uses silk to stick plant fragments to its body, so it resembles the plant it is eating.
Polyphemus Moth ( Antheraea polyphemus). Wingspan: 4 to 5.9 inches (10 to 15 cm). Adults have no mouth parts and cannot feed, but they mate almost immediately, lay eggs, and then die. Caterpillars feed on birch, willow, maple and oak.

Wingspan: 1.25 to 2 inches (3.2 to 5 cm). It is also known as “Bumblebee Moth” because it resembles a bee. Caterpillars feed on snowberry, dogbane and honeysuckle. Unlike most moths, it flies during the day, feeding on nectar from various flowers. In this photo it is feeding on lilac blossoms.

St. Lawrence Tiger Moth (Platarctia parthenos). Wingspan: 2 to 2.5 inches (5 to 6.5 cm). It’s unknown if the adults feed or not, but the caterpillars feed on leaves of alder, aspen, birch and willow. I’ve seen the hind wing described both as black with yellow stripes and yellow with black stripes.
W
e love seeing butterflies because they are so colorful. They are also accessible because they fly during the day. Our attitude toward moths, however, is quite different. We think of moths as small, drab, uninteresting insects, and many of them are. But there are also a lot of spectacular moths, and we don’t get to see them because most of them fly at night. Worldwide, moths outnumber butterflies by almost 10 to one. A quick internet search brought me to the Smithsonian website where I found that there are some 160,000 species of moths in the world, compared to 17,500 species of butterflies. In summer, I often leave our porch light on for a few hours after dark to see if I can attract and photograph these beautiful insects. Here are some of the most interesting moths that I have seen.
Big Poplar Sphinx Moth (Pachysphinx modesta). Wingspan: 3 to 4.75 inches (7.6 to 12 cm). Adults do not feed. Caterpillars feed on leaves of poplar, aspen, cottonwood and willow.
One-eyed Sphinx (Smerinthus cerisyi). Wingspan: 2.4 to 3.7 inches (6.2 to 9 cm). Adults do not feed. Caterpillars feed on willow and poplar.
Isabella Tiger Moth (Woolybear caterpillar), (Pyrrharctia isabella). One of the most well-known caterpillars is the Woolybear which becomes the Isabella Tiger Moth. Contrary to popular folklore, the amount of red on the Woolybear does not indicate the severity of the coming winter. The caterpillar starts out mostly black and becomes redder as it ages, so the amount of red only indicates how old it is. The Woolybear eats many different plants. It overwinters as a caterpillar and can freeze solid but still be living when it thaws out in the spring. The wingspan of the moth is 1.8 to 2.6 inches (4.5 to 6.5 cm).
Great Tiger Moth ( Arctia caja). Wingspan: 1.8 to 2.6 inches (4.5 to 6.5 cm). This moth prefers cold climates, so it is found in northern areas all around the world. The body of the moth contains toxins, so birds and bats learn to recognize this insect and avoid it. Adults eat nectar from a variety of flowers and caterpillars eat leaves from many different plants. NORTHERN WILDS

The artists and the moving pictures CREATIVE SPACE: By Peter Fergus-Moore Centuries ago, people admired beautifully rendered images of life. But these were static. Wouldn’t it be wonderful, they thought, if these images could move as in real life? Out of this question, motion pictures emerged, and later, animation. Fast forward to a teen-aged, Geraldton, Ontario-born Gerry Simpson, landing in Ottawa, Ontario, in the 1960s. He had had no plan beyond just getting there. “I heard about Crawley Films,” he says, “and got a job with them.” Fortunately, the artistically-inclined Simpson had an impressive portfolio of work done while he was a student at Selkirk High School in Thunder Bay. “I was hired as a tracer, then progressed to (being) a tracer and fill-in cartoonist tracer, working directly under the main cartoonist,” he says. This involved the agonizing, painstaking work of creating many series of drawings (frames) that would result in a moving image. “One second of a continuous motion required 24-30 frames per second of drawings,” he adds, while the finished cartoon would involve thousands of such images, known in the trade as cels.
The animation cartoonist would draw the first three frames and the last three frames of a given movement sequence. Simpson and his tracer colleagues would then draw the intermediate dozens of frames on a round, rotating, transparent glass-topped drawing table, lit from underneath. “We wore white dinner gloves to keep from transferring sweat or oils from our hands to the cels,” he remembers. “We needed accuracy, absolute pen and ink pressure and thorough consistency to complete the animation action drawings.” Once completed, these series of cels were photographed one by one onto motion picture film. The developed film would then be projected onto a screen in the same way as live-action film, creating much the same illusion of movement. Simpson and thousands of animators like him benefited from the willingness of our brains and eyes to be fooled by beta movement. This is the optical illusion created by rapid changes in adjacent images interpreted by our brains as a sequence of movement. The rapid changes are the result of each frame of a film moving quickly through a projector. The illusion can be as simple as, say, a dot made to “move”
from one part of an image to another, all the way to eye-popping scenarios of entire worlds and living beings in a dizzyingly complex ballet of movement. Think of Fantasia, by Walt Disney Studios, and you see what old-school hand-drawn animation could accomplish. There is even a variation on animation known as “rotoscope,” in which animators drew over live action films frame by frame. Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is an example. During his stint at Crawley Films, Simpson worked on home-grown animations, as well as for Disney Studios and on Hanna-Barbara creations such as Yogi Bear and the Flintstones. Like most workers in the labour-intensive field of animation, he worked painstakingly for long hours, but was paid so poorly that he had to give the job up after four-and-a-half months as he couldn’t make ends meet. Though he has not mentioned this matter himself, at the time none of the animation labourers received credit for their work—only the top brass, such as director, writer and creator of the musical accompaniment. Nowadays, two major changes have come to the animation industry. The most obvious is Computer-Generated Imagery,
or CGI. Where animators once would draw by hand, they now create images with computer software, eliminating many in-between stages such as tracing on cels. However, the same process needed to create any animation, that is, drawing frames, still requires many thousands of images created and modified over a considerable period of time by an army of animators. And nowadays, if you watch the closing credits of animated films, you will see most if not all animators named. Animation is still a very labour-intensive field. After his stint at Crawley, Simpson moved on to Montreal, Quebec, to work in advertising. Luckily, Simpson sufficiently impressed his employer at Foster Advertising, Ron Sharpless, to sponsor his attending the Ontario Arts College with the guarantee of a job on completion of the degree. Years afterwards, armed with a Fine Arts, Art History and English degree from Minneapolis School of Fine Arts, Simpson was contacted by his old high school principal in Thunder Bay to return there to teach art. He retired as a respected teacher after 30 years, a far cry from being the young, overlooked animation artist in the 1960s.

Thorne is a blues guitarist who focuses on fingerstyle playing. Without a pick, he’s able to perform intricate melodies, clear basslines and outline chords at the same time.
Open 7 Days a Week
“I was really heavily influenced by 20’s and 30’s guys, but especially Blind Blake and Lonnie Johnson,” says Thorne. “I really kind of like that kind of more uptown style as opposed to that one-chord delta stuff. I like that stuff, too, but I really was drawn to that Piedmont style.” Piedmont is a type of blues which Thorne plays regularly at his shows. It comes from the Mid-Atlantic area, born out of ragtime rhythms in the early 20th century. He has had a lifetime to study the history of American blues, as he discovered it at a young age in his home state of Massachusetts. “One of my buddies, his brother was older and he had gone off to college and had come home a blues DJ in the early 70s,” says Thorne. “And turned us on to it when we were 12 and 13 years old. I just dug it, you know? It just resonated with me. Still does; it’s got the groove.”

Thorne continued to build his skills in the West Bank area of Minneapolis, playing at places like the Riverside Cafe. He says even then he wasn’t trying to make a name for himself, he just wanted to improve. “I was just trying to learn how to play, and then got good enough at it that you go to an open stage or something like that. Then all of a sudden, you either are too scared to do it or you go ‘Wow, that was really fun’. I liked the fear.”

FOR THE LOVE OF THE BLUES
Gordon Thorne JAMS: By Will Moore When it comes to his musicianship, Gordon Thorne is humble to a fault. He’ll tell you that he just doesn’t consider himself that good of a guitar player. Or he’ll describe himself as “just one of the laziest musicians you’ll ever meet.” But a long history of playing several nights a week for many years at various Cook County venues would beg to differ, especially since Thorne lives in Lake County, meaning he’ll drive more than an hour one way just to play a gig. In fact, it might make him one of the region’s most dedicated players. “I’m just a guy that wants to play guitar. I’m not out there trying to make a name or make any money,” says Thorne, 62. “I came up here just to live out in the woods and be a brush hippie.”
Embracing that fear paid off, as now Thorne performs with an expansive mix of blues standards and originals. Though mostly a solo artist, he’ll sometimes play with special guests like harmonica whiz Jim Elverhoy of Lutsen. Thorne says despite spending so much time with guitar, the key to his music is the vocals. “When I’m having my best nights, I’m letting my voice really rule how I’m going to play. I focus on the guitar practicing at home. And when I’m on a gig I realize that it’s really all about the singing.” Thorne will often go off on extended solos or medley several songs together as he plays, a habit which he attributes to his love of the Grateful Dead. He says that what may look like fully off the cuff playing does have a structure to it. “It’s like semi-improvisational,” says Thorne. “You’ve got this kind of bag of tricks that you can pull from, and all this stuff, and you don’t know what’s going to come up next, but you’re in a ballpark. You’re not going to leave the park.” Thorne says that above all else, he plays for the fun of it. And though he says he may be easing back on gigs, especially in a time of pandemic, you can still find him three times a month at the North Shore Winery in Lutsen for their Thursday date nights.

The North Shore Dish DIY Campfire Meals By Chuck Viren
The scene has played out so frequently in the Northland that it evokes fond memories for most of us. The sun slides toward the western horizon as the campfire crackles and pops. Something tantalizing sizzles in a skillet, perhaps fresh-caught walleye or trout fillets. You and your companions are spaced around the fire ring on logs or rocks, occasionally moving to evade the shifting smoke. Perhaps your canoe rests on the rocky shoreline, awaiting an after-dinner tour of the calming lake. Many who camp in remote areas use pre-packaged meals that can be purchased at their favorite outdoor store or online. These compact, light-weight meals are quite good. I use them frequently on backpacking trips where weight and ease of use is a primary consideration. For canoe camping, though, I generally prefer to outfit myself from grocery stores. On the lakes, I value fresh food over considerations of weight. At the beginning of my trip, I may strain under the weight of the food pack, but I very much enjoy my mealtimes. When I plan a trip, I have different strategies for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For breakfast I generally focus on foods that can be prepared relatively quickly yet are substantial enough to sustain me through the morning hours when I hope to put many miles behind me. For lunch I mostly have a variety of foods to nosh on, and for dinner I like to feature fresh root vegetables whenever possible. Why root vegetables? Though they are heavy, they keep for a long time. Carrots, onions and rutabagas can last a couple of weeks if properly cared for. I like to bring cabbage, celery and garlic as well. My wife Kathy makes a variation of the Japanese dish, Kimpira, that is always a hit after a long paddle. The ingredients, carrots, onions, rutabaga and maybe parsnips, are cut into matchstick shaped strips and sautéed in oil, first at a high heat for about five minutes, then at a lower heat for up to 20 minutes; add soy or tamari sauce to taste near the end. Another popular dish a few days into the trip is burritos. For this I use dried refried beans, available in bulk at your local coop and reconstituted easily, tortillas, salsa (which can be stored in a Nalgene bottle), cheese, which should keep for up to three days, and chopped cabbage instead of lettuce or cilantro. 24

Mike Bartz, owner of Border Lakes Tour and Guide Service in Grand Marais, prepares a campfire meal. | MIKE BARTZ We also bring a variety of pastas, easy to cook rice, and cous-cous. Spaghetti sauce can be stored in Nalgene bottles as well. Tuna makes a handy protein that can be added to the sauce—be sure to buy tuna in foil bags and not tins. Bring some Parmesan cheese along—it is very hard cheese, and the harder the cheese, the longer it will last without spoiling. It is easy to experiment with other pasta dishes. Try stir-frying some vegetables with garlic and onion and adding that to your favorite pasta, then melt in some cheese. Another delicious dinner option is to slice potatoes or other root vegetables, onions, garlic, and if early enough on your trip, your protein of choice, then wrap it all in tin foil and place it in the coals of your fire. Do this only when the fire has burned down to coals. Let it go for 20 minutes to a half hour. I always hope for at least one meal of fish. Personally, I like to pan-fry my fillets over relatively low heat, without batter, in olive oil and seasoned with salt, pepper and paprika. For those who like a more traditional fish fry, there are plenty of easy options. I often bring extra pancake mix and season it with salt and pepper then coat the fillets while slightly wet. There is a popular product named Shore Lunch that works well, and many people like to bring along Panko for their fish fry. There is little more satisfying than fish so fresh it curls
up when it hits the hot pan. I bring along a side of rice, rice and beans, or cous-cous to accompany my fish. The above mentioned Kimpira also pairs well with fish. Bannock is a campfire staple that is hearty and quite easy to make. Mike Bartz, of Border Lakes Tour and Guide Service, takes his bannock very seriously. It is best to pre-mix your ingredients. For every cup of whole wheat flour, Bartz mixes three tablespoons of powdered milk and one teaspoon of baking powder. In camp, just add a little water at a time until the dough has a soft consistency. Bartz also likes to add brown sugar and raisins, though this is not necessary. The dough can be fried, cooked wrapped on a stick, or baked. Bartz prefers to bake his in a fry-bake pan. He flattens the dough in a lightly oiled pan. The cooking time varies depending on temperature, but baking is best done over coals. The bannock will have to be flipped after it has browned on the bottom. As a special treat, Bartz likes to sprinkle cinnamon and drizzle rum on top after it has been flipped. Finish baking, then enjoy. Bartz claims that the best bannock is cooked in bear fat, for those with access to such ingredients. For those who prefer to pack light for the trail, there are excellent do-it-yourself options that involve a food dehydrator. Bartz has developed many great dehydrated one-pot meals for the trail. Some of his favorites are a Thai peanut soup, and spa-
ghetti with a dehydrated sauce. He says it is easy to dehydrate cooked meat such as hamburger to add to the sauce. Former restauranteur, caterer and gourmand Susan Bishop has adapted an amazing chicken casserole dehydrated meal from the Leave-No-Crumbs Camping Cookbook by Rick Greenspan and Hal Kahn. She takes a four-pound chicken and cuts it into parts, then coats it in flour seasoned with paprika, garlic powder, salt, pepper, basil, savory, and parsley. This she bakes in a Dutch oven for 1.5 hours with sautéed onion, garlic, celery, carrots, red pepper, white wine and chicken stock. For the last five minutes, she adds in sautéed mushrooms and halved pimento-stuffed olives. After the chicken is fall-off the bone tender, she debones the chicken. She then spreads the casserole onto lined trays and dehydrates for 12 to 14 hours. Freeze in airtight bags. It will last for about a week on the trail. Rehydrate by adding water to cover and simmering for about 20 minutes. There are many more options for do-ityourself campfire meals. The key is in good planning, and for me, plenty of fresh root vegetables. They are versatile and can be added to a variety of dishes. I’ll take the extra weight every time.

As most folks know, masks are not intended to protect the wearer, but to protect others around them by containing tiny droplets exhaled by the wearer. Face coverings are readily available for sale at many businesses, as well as from Visit Cook County. Some businesses have volunteer greeters at the door to inform customers about their policies regarding face coverings and social distancing. From all accounts, the vast majority of customers support mandatory face coverings inside and are grateful businesses are being proactive about protecting public health.

Bumping & Bruising their way through Summer By Amy Schmidt Summer is synonymous with adventure. Adventure is often synonymous with injury, especially when kids are involved. Whether its learning to ride a bike without training wheels or tripping on a root while hiking the Superior Hiking Trail, almost every kid who enjoys summer will experience bumps, bruises and cuts. A bruise occurs when damaged blood vessels build up under the skin’s surface. Kids get bruises all the time, especially on bony parts of their bodies like shins. In younger kids, bruises are especially common as they are less coordinated and often enjoy activities like climbing or rough-andtumble play. Applying pressure and a clothwrapped ice pack to the injured area for 10 minutes can help reduce swelling and pain. Expect bruises to take up to 14 days to disappear. The bruise might change color and seem to get bigger as it heals. In almost all cases, kids don’t need to see a doctor about bruising. Usually, bruises are nothing to worry about, especially if they can be connected to a specific event. But, if you notice bruising that doesn’t seem related to your child’s normal activities, you might want to consider a visit to the doctor. Cuts, or lacerations, are also a part of a childhood summer. Small cuts aren’t a danger to kids and are often healed with acknowledgement, a kind word and a Band-Aid. For minor bleeding from a small cut or scrape, start by washing the area thoroughly with water and a mild soap. Be sure to rinse well. Cover the area with a sterile adhesive bandage or gauze with adhesive
Small cuts...are often healed with...a kind word and a Band-Aid. tape. Once the cut forms a scab, the bandage can be removed. If you notice any swelling, drainage, tenderness or warmth around the area, contact your doctor. If your child has a large or deep cut, do your best to remain calm. Kids are excellent imitators; if they see you escalate, they will too. If available, wear clean latex or rubber gloves. Rinse the wound with water so you can see it clearly and check its size. Place a sterile gauze or clean cloth over the entire wound and, if possible, raise the injured body part above the child’s heart and, using your palm over the gauze, apply steady, direct pressure to the wound for five minutes. If blood soaks through the gauze, do not remove it. Apply an additional piece on top and continue applying pressure until the bleeding stops. If the wound is on the child’s face or neck, was caused by a bite, a burn, electrical injury or puncture wound, has debris that can’t be removed, is more than a half inch or appears deep, you should seek immediate medical attention. Always make sure you have a stocked first aid kit on hand, especially when camping or hiking. Consider keeping one at home and in the car as well. Make sure your child is up to date on their Tetanus shot and, while you’re at it, make sure you are, too.
Summer is synonymous with adventure, and almost every kid who enjoys summer will experience bumps, bruises and cuts. | STOCK

Fishing Guides 101 Long before I ever began working as a guide, I used their services. I have fished with dozens of guides from coast to coast, in the states and Canada, in salt water and fresh. Guides are helpful for an angler because they can shorten the learning curve and increase your chance of success. The best fishing guides are on the water regularly, know what the fish are doing and when, and can help you be in the place that will best allow you to connect. What guides can’t do is perform miracles. If you want to catch a giant brook trout on a fly, but have never fly fished, this may be a problem. If you are prone to sea sickness, but want to spend a day chasing salmon on Lake Superior, you might want to stock up on Gravol. The more honest you are about your skill level, and your health issues—if any—the better it is for the guide. Guides want you to have the best experience possible. So, let’s talk about a few ways to decide if a guide is right for you. Choosing

a Guide
There are a lot of variables when it comes to choosing a fishing guide. In some instances—at remote lodges for instance— you may have the guide chosen for you. That doesn’t mean you won’t have any say, but many times at lodges or resorts, the guides are designated to a party. A good guide will have a chat with the client before the trip to see what they want to do, what their expectations are, and if there are any health or dietary issues. A guide’s job is to put you on fish, but to also keep you safe and healthy. If you are not asked these questions, then make sure you ask the guide. Guiding is a paid service, and as a client, you will want to get the most out of your experience. If you are hiring a guide for a day trip, or for a few days, and you have a few options available, don’t be afraid to reach
By Gord Ellis
out. Guides are usually available via messenger, phone or email. The majority of active guides have social media accounts, wither personal or business. Most guides are willing to chat with prospective clients, as long as the chats are not overly long and repeated. Generally, a guide will have a specialty—muskie fishing for instance—but can do a few other types of angling as well. A quick chat will give you a good idea what to expect and what you need to bring. It should be noted that not all guides do the same thing. Some do shore lunch and some don’t. Some guides are no kill on certain species, and this is usually discussed beforehand. As a personal example, I don’t allow the harvest of wild brook trout when I am guiding on the Nipigon. If you get a legal laker or salmon, and want to eat it, fine. People who are not cool with no kill on brookies don’t go fishing with me. So, this is the kind of stuff that can be hashed out in a few minutes over messenger or phone. Find out what you need, if the fishing gear is supplied or not, and whether food is included as part of the trip. If it’s a boat trip, the odds are all the safety gear will be on board, but it never hurts to ask about bringing a life jacket, etc. If you are stream/river fishing, you should find out whether hip/chest waders are required. Always bring rain gear, no matter what. I am constantly amazed when clients show up with no rain gear.
Most guides will also provide a couple of names of clients you can check with for recommendations. Obviously, these people are likely going to provide you a positive recommendation, but it’s not a bad thing to chat with former clients. They will let you know things you might not be aware of, like whether the guide smokes or allows it. You can also get a sense of what to expect from a guided day from a client perspective.
Payment/Tipping Lodges generally include the cost of the guide/boat fee in the daily guiding fee. The guide is then paid by lodge or resort. However, it never hurts to ask the guide what the arrangement is. Guides who work on their own may want a down payment for a trip and will take the rest of the fee at the end of the trip. This is becoming more common as people not showing up for trips happens more frequently when there has been no money laid down. As for tipping, it varies a bit, but the general 15 to 20 percent tip that you would leave for a server generally works for guiding. Obviously, if the guide did not work as hard as you think they should have, you can choose not to tip. And if the guide has blown your mind with their charm, skill and intellect, you can be more generous. Most guides will do everything in their power to make your day enjoyable and a success. They want you to come back.

Expectations One note about expectations when guiding. As mentioned earlier, guides can do a lot of stuff, but they can’t make fish bite, they can’t stop the rain and they can’t
make a poor/mediocre fisherman a good one in 7.5 hours. They will try, and God knows I’ve been there. But when a guided fishing day does not go perfectly, remember the huge number of factors are underway. Try and enjoy all the amazing things

Wild Traditions Garlic Mustard: Do the Forest a Favor and Eat It RECIPES I happen to really enjoy bitter greens and vegetables in the brassica family, so I don’t go to great lengths to disguise garlic mustard’s flavour. I usually chop up young stems and leaves and wilt them as I would with spinach, or sauté with a bit of oil, then add them to scrambled eggs. I’ve even added a handful on top of a burger or sandwich in place of lettuce. But for more calculated recipes, here are a couple with a short list of ingredients. Experiment by adding your own preferences of herbs and spices to really make these recipes sing. Enjoy!

If you enjoy the taste of bitter, pungent foods, then garlic mustard may be a healthy and eco-conscious addition to your diet.
Beans with Garlic Mustard
As one of the oldest herbs used in Europe, Alliaria petiolata was introduced to North America in the 1800s and has spread widely throughout the continent. Regarded as an herbaceous weed, it thrives where humans live and travel, with an estimated range across southern Canada and much of the United States with the exception of the Midwest prairies and its southern deserts. On its own it moves very slowly, but with the help of passing animals and humans, it hitches a ride on shoes, animal fur and paws, car tires and bicycles, and creeps a little further each season. It is commonly found in shaded areas, particularly soft forest floors, roadsides, flood plains and trail sides. It will even grow in open fields. As a member of the mustard family, this aromatic plant is impressively nutritious, out-competing spinach, broccoli leaves, collards, turnip greens, kale and domestic mustard for vitamin C, vitamin E, fiber and zinc content. It is also high in omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, iron and manganese, according to John Kallas, a botanist with a Ph. D in nutrition who’s been teaching and writing about wild food plants since the 1970s. “Garlic mustard is one of the most nutritious leafy greens ever analyzed,” he writes in his book, Edible Wild Plants. Apart from its attractive nutrition profile, there are some ecologically sound rea-

nounced and the foliage is generally a rich, deep shade of green.
Like most invasive species, garlic mustard does not have any significant natural predators to control its populations in North America. What’s more, its roots release chemicals that kill beneficial mycorrhiza—underground fungi that support many native plants—and inhibit them from growing. In a relatively short time span, woodland areas can be completely overrun by garlic mustard if left unchecked.
It starts out as a small, squat herb on the forest floor, but as temperatures warm the plant sends up a flower stem that grows to about three feet fall. Clusters of small white flowers emerge, and the stem eventually forms a seedpod.
How to Identify Garlic Mustard Garlic mustard is an early springtime green and usually crops up around the same time as stinging nettles. The leaves vary from rounded at the base, to kidney-shaped, to triangular at the top of the plant with a slightly serrated edge. Venations, or lines along the leaves, is pro-
With few plants that closely resemble garlic mustard, most foragers can be confident after it has been positively identified. Like many plants, you are likely to develop an eye for garlic mustard and recognize it everywhere you go thereafter. If you’re in doubt, crush a couple of leaves in your hand. If they smell like garlic, then you’ve found what you’re looking for. Instead of cutting the plant at the base (unless you have a small patch and want to continue harvesting), you can dig or pull it up by its roots to help control its spread.
2 cups of drained and rinsed canned red kidney beans 1/2 cup chopped garlic mustard leaves 1/3 cup raisins 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar Salt and pepper to taste Mix all ingredients – no cooking required.
Garlic Mustard Pesto Adapted from FarmSteady in Brooklyn, New York Great on pasta, toast and as a rub on anything headed for the grill. 2 cups garlic mustard leaves 1/4 cup pine nuts or walnut pieces 2 cloves garlic 1/2 cup olive oil 1/2 cup pecorino, Romano or parmesan cheese, grated Blend in a food processor until smooth. Having fled the testosterone-soaked world of professional sport fishing, thirty-something RayAnne Dahl is navigating a new job as a consultant for the first all-women talk show about fishing on public television. But after the host bails, RayAnne lands in front of the camera and out of her depth at the helm of the show. The first in a trilogy, Fishing is a hilarious saga of fishing, family and three generations of tough, independent women, filled with charm, wit, heartbreak and honesty.—Breana Roy
Beloved Minnesota writer Kao Kalia Yang tells the story of a Hmong American family of five living with loss and tremendous love. Months after their young daughter drowns, the parents ask the girl’s older brother if he’d like a room of his own. When he asks whose room, they reply, “Your sister’s.” While it’s meant to be a children’s picture book, it brings a message of comfort and hope to readers of all ages. It reminds us that when a loved one dies, the love we have for them remains strong and unwavering.—Breana Roy RS-Ad_ 2.33x5.78_F_print.pdf 1 4/26/2020 3:39:47 AM

Minnesota Old West Living History This month Jupiter and Saturn dominate the evening sky, while Venus climbs into prominence as a predawn planet. Venus comes out higher in the east every day, freeing itself from the sun’s foreglow. On the 3rd, our brilliant sister planet begins a 10-day glide across the face of Taurus, the bull, represented by the V-shaped Hyades star cluster. On the 12th, Venus passes just one degree, or two moon widths, from Aldebaran, the eye of the bull, which is not part of the Hyades. Hanging above the action is another star cluster: the Pleiades. Venus crossed the Pleiades in April, before plummeting out of the evening sky. Don’t miss the show on the 17th, when a waning crescent moon joins Venus and Aldebaran. Jupiter and Saturn rise before midnight in the southeast. Much brighter Jupiter and the ringed planet both reach opposition this month, when Earth laps them in the orbital race and they appear opposite the sun in the sky. Jupiter’s opposition comes on the 14th, Saturn’s on the 20th. Both planets now trace low arcs across the
sky each night because in summer, our hemisphere is tilted toward the sun and thus away from any planet opposite, or nearly opposite, the sun. But Mars will be fairly high at its October opposition because by then we will tilt more toward the night sky than toward the sun. As its opposition date approaches, Mars brightens daily, but it’s still a morning planet. By month’s end, though, it just manages to scrape over the eastern horizon by midnight. July’s full moon arrives shortly before midnight on the 4th. Between 10:07 p.m. and 12:52 a.m. that night, the moon’s uppermost part undergoes a penumbral eclipse, where Earth blocks some sunlight from reaching the moon. This eclipse will be so slight that only the sharpest eyes will notice it.

Strange Tales Have you Hugged a Tree Lately? “In the woods I feel that nothing can befall me ... which nature cannot repair.”
By Elle AndraWarner
It was back about 20 years ago while interviewing a pioneer of a remote northern Ontario railway town, that I first heard of someone talking about trees as their ‘friends’. She was telling me about walking to school on a country road from her lakeside home. The walk was a couple of miles long with boreal forest on each side, no houses. Surprised, I asked her if she was ever afraid to walk that road by herself? She replied, “Oh no. I knew the trees would protect me. The trees were my friends.” And it seemed they did—nothing ever happened to her walking on that country road.
your chest and then up in your head,” said forest ranger Þór Þorfinnsson in a news interview with the Icelandic Broadcasting Service RÚV. “It’s such a wonderful feeling of relaxation and then you’re ready for a new day and new challenges.” He recommends people take their time to get the full benefit of hugging a tree, noting that once a day for “five minutes is really good.”
There’s been a lot of media attention about trees in the last while. From how trees have communities; how trees grow; their relationship with people; forest bathing (courses now being taught in North America) and health benefits from hugging a tree. Books about trees, like Trees by David Suzuki and Wayne Grady and The Hidden Life of Trees; and, TV specials like the recent BBC Special, “Judi Dench: My Passion of Trees.” (In her BBC documentary, Dame Judi Dench asks the viewer “Do you know there are more trees than there are stars in the galaxy?”.)
In Japan, the physician Qing Li, chairman of the Japanese Society for Forest Medicine, believes the act of hugging a tree is soothing, good for us and views trees as part of our family. Japan has spent $4 million researching forest bathing (connecting with nature) from 2004 to 2012, and has now 62 designated therapeutic woods.
Even governments are beginning to encourage people to ‘hug a tree’. In April 2020, the Icelandic Forest Service recommended people go out to the woods to hug a tree. The tree-hugging initiative encouraged people to hug trees when social distancing prevented them from hugging other people. “When you hug [a tree], you feel it first in your toes and then up your legs and into

One of the benefits of hugging or leaning up against a tree is taking in the health benefits of phytoncides, antimicrobial essential oils released by trees. According to researchers, while phytoncides protects trees against germs, the oils can also boost human mood and immune systems, as well as a host of other benefits.
Hugging a tree has also become a survival skill to children throughout the U.S. and Canada. The Hug-a-Tree (HAT) and Survive program teaches basic outdoor survival skills—including how not to get lost and what to do if you do get lost—to children ages 5 to 12 years old. It originated in San Diego, Cali., after 9-year-old Jimmy Beveridge became lost and died in the wilderness in 1981 and was developed by a retired U.S. border patrol agent and a freelance writer/photographer who had participated in the search. In the Thunder Bay area, the Lakehead Search and Rescue Unit (LSRU) is certified to deliver the HAT (Hug-a-Tree) and Survive program.
“I was looking for that perfect escape cresting this black granite summit looking down into the Brule River Valley, boreal forest and jagged peaks I knew I wanted to be part of all of this”
Why is the program named Hug-a-Tree? One of the survival tips taught is if you are lost, “hug a tree” and stay put. In February 2020, the City of Thunder Bay became one of the “Tree Cities of the World,” joining global network that includes nine other Canadian cities and 26 U.S. cities. The international program was developed by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and the Arbor Day Foundation to celebrate greener cities and towns. (To date, no Minnesota cities/ towns are listed; applications for 2020 will be accepted in September at: treecitiesoftheworld.org.) By the way, with 30,000 urban trees in Thunder Bay, the city has a “Nominate a Tree” program giving recognition to “special” trees. According to the city’s website, “You can nominate any tree within the city limits. If you believe that a tree, or stand of trees, is of cultural, historical, or biological importance, let us know. Notable trees
land for Sale:
Hugging a tree can provide many health benefits. | ELLE ANDRA-WARNER can be on public lands or if permission is granted of the owner, private land. City’s Forestry and Horticulture staff will review all nominations prior to adding to our “Notable Tree list.” And once you find the right tree to hug, Icelandic forest ranger Þór Þorfinnsson in an article in Iceland Review by Larissa Kyzer (April 10, 2020) had another recommendation, “It’s also really nice to close your eyes while you are hugging a tree. I lean my cheek against the trunk and feel the warmth and the currents flowing from the tree and into me. You can really feel it.”

CATCHLIGHT
Gray Tree Frog While hiking I came across this gray tree frog on a moss covered log. Due to their ability to camouflage themselves I almost missed seeing it. Gray tree frogs will change their color to blend in with whatever they are sitting on. This one matched the moss covered log. I’ve also seen them on a cedar tree blending perfectly with the brown bark. I once saw one on a light colored spot of bedrock and the frog was the same color, a light colored gray. When doing a photo workshop one time a guy told me that he saw one on a pink piece of styrofoam next to his house and the frog actually was pink. I have to admit I have not experienced that, but it’s pretty amazing to see them adapt to so many colors.—Paul Sundberg NORTHERN WILDS
