The beacons on the shore Lake Superior gets a little unruly at this time of year. Visitors arrive to see the fall storms, when ocean-like waves crash upon the rocky shores. But it is one thing to watch the weather and another to truly experience it. At this time of year, most of the shipping traffic sticks close to the leeward North Shore. Imagine what it is like for the sailors who are out there on the cold, rolling lake. On Nov. 10, the beacon at Split Rock Lighthouse will be lit to commemorate the 1975 wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald and the 29 crew members who were lost. The event also gives us a moment to contemplate the many lives that have been lost to the stormy lake over the centuries. The loss of lives and vessels motivated the construction of Split Rock and dozens of other lighthouses and beacons along the North Shore. For many years, the lights were operated by on-site lightkeepers, a lonely and at times dangerous occupation. In this issue, Elle Andra-Warner shares some stories from the early lightkeepers, who sometimes risked their lives travelling alone in small boats as they left their remote posts to reach civilization at the end of the shipping season.

Do you have a question for one of our writers? Or an interesting photo, recipe, or story you’d like to share with Northern Wilds? Please send it to storyideas@northernwilds.com.

Many readers know that Elle is an accomplished writer and historian from reading her Strange Tales column in this magazine. We are pleased to announce that her newest book, Lighthouses of Lake Superior’s North Shore, The Historic Beacons of Minnesota, Isle Royale and Ontario has just been released by North Shore Press (the book publishing arm of Northern Wilds). This comprehensive, full-color guide to the

North Shore’s lighthouses includes photographs and maps, as well as painstakingly researched information about the construction, operation and history of each light and stories about lightkeepers and shipwrecks. It’s a great book to curl up with on a stormy November night. The same can be said for this issue of Northern Wilds. The issue theme is Volunteers, which we find appropriate during the year of a pandemic. Rae Poynter looks at various programs along the North Shore that provide home delivery of meals to seniors and others who have trouble getting out. Peter Fergus-Moore reports on the relatively new phenomenon of death doulas, who assist individuals and families coping with the final stage of life. Amy Schmidt shows us ways to stay safe from Covid this fall and winter. November is also hunting season. Gord Ellis provides an update on Northwestern Ontario’s moose and deer populations, both of which significantly declined during the past decade. Joe Shead leads us to Ninemile Lake, where he reports you can catch sizeable walleye and pike. Chuck Viren takes us into the world of sausage making with North Shore butchers. On an adventurous note, Julia Prinselaar tells us about her recent visit to Iceland. As always, we’ve made sure there are enough interesting stories and photos in this issue of Northern Wilds to keep you turning the pages. It’s beginning to get cold and dark outside, so settle in and enjoy a good read.—Shawn Perich and Amber Pratt

Jeff and Anna Latz Building a legacy

LUTSEN— For nearly half a century, the Clearview building has been at the center of Lutsen life, home to many of the businesses and local personalities that make the community unique. What started as a simple general store and post office in the 1940s, has since been expanded and developed over recent decades by Jeff and Anna Latz into what it is today—“downtown Lutsen.” Now, after 40 years of steady growth and community enrichment, Jeff and Anna have sold the building, passing on its legacy to local residents Dave and Chris Homyak. “It was great to have Chris and his dad purchase the whole building,” says Jeff. “We’re glad it’s locals, they have a lot of good energy and so many great ideas.” “In some ways it has been hard to let go,” adds Anna, “I mean, this business has been with us for so long—it’s our baby! But we’re just so thankful to see it passed on to Chris and Dave who we know care about this place just as much as we do.”

What started as a simple general store and post office in the 1940s, has since been expanded and developed over recent decades by Jeff and Anna Latz into what it is today—“downtown Lutsen.” | SUBMITTED

Born and raised in Rochester, Minn., Jeff first visited the North Shore in 1975 while on a fishing trip with friends. “At the time, I was fresh out of college,” says Jeff, who graduated from Arizona State University. “On the way back from the trip we drove past the ski hill, and I said ‘you know, let’s go up there and check it out.’” While checking out the ski hill, Jeff noticed a “Help Wanted” sign on the door, so he picked up an application, turned it in, and was pretty much offered a job on the spot. “After thinking about it for a couple of weeks,” continues Jeff, “I thought ‘ah what the heck’, I wasn’t doing anything, why not work here for the winter? And then of course when the winter was over, I wanted to see what a whole year (in Lutsen) was like, which led into the next year, and then the next, and soon I was hooked.” Jeff worked for the ski hill from 19751979, before moving on to work for a local carpenter for a couple of years. Then, thanks in part to the encouragement of his good friend Doug Nordahl, Jeff decided to purchase the Clearview building when it went up for sale. “The general store had been around for a long time before I bought it,” says Jeff, “but stopped operation in 1965. Then, another couple opened it in 1980, but wanted out by 1981, so that’s when I stepped in, and it’s just been one thing after another after that.” When Jeff first purchased the Clearview building, the whole place was still heated by a wood stove and there were no indoor restrooms in the general store. “I used to chop wood all day between customers,” recalls Jeff, “and then in 1997, when we added indoor bathrooms to the store, that was a pretty big deal.” Meanwhile, Anna was busy running her own business, Heavy Duty Sewing, with her

store,” continues Jeff, “and then we added the overhang across all the buildings…”

Together, Anna and Cihlar started Heavy Duty Sewing in 1979, working out of Anna’s basement that was, at the time, part of the Rose Running property. After 10 years of growing the business together, Anna bought out Cihlar’s share of the business, and continued running Heavy Duty Sewing on her own until deciding to downsize in 2017.

“Now here’s a little local humor for you,” adds Anna. “The story goes that Jeff was working on the overhang every day, but no one in town would let him work, they’d constantly stop him to chat.”

But it was in 1983 that Anna and Nancy expanded Heavy Duty Sewing into the Clearview building, thanks to the first of Jeff’s many additions to his newly acquired property. “Our first addition,” says Jeff, “Was Heavy Duty Sewing and Great Gifts; Great Gifts being Cihlar’s next business after Heavy Duty.” “After that, we continued filling the space, expanding the building to where Fika Coffee is today, which at the time was a liquor

“And then,” continues Anna, “they all had a bright idea—‘say, why don’t you put that overhang all the way across?’” “And of course, that’s exactly what I was trying to do,” says Jeff, “I was just too busy visiting with everyone to get it done.” Despite the unavoidable distractions associated with operating a community store, Jeff and Anna loved how the business allowed them to engage with their customers, and the lasting impact that they were able to have on the community. “Running and living above a community store,” recalls Jeff, “was a very, very unique

experience. I wouldn’t trade it for the world, I don’t think any of us would.” “It was a great life,” agrees Anna. In addition to adding a whole second story to the original Clearview building to help meet the communities need for affordable housing, the Latz’s developed all of the buildings next door, building the Credit Union and its numerous expansions, as well as the building next to it. As if all of that wasn’t enough; Jeff and Anna went on to start a number of other businesses over the years, some with partners and others on their own, including a boat rental service, a candy distribution company, and a vending amusement company. As Jeff and Anna move on to a more relaxing future, they walk away from the Clearview building with enough stories to fill a book and memories to last several lifetimes.—Eric Weicht

The Nature Conservancy recently acquired 2,110 acres located north of Schroeder, from Mike Freed. | JASON WHALEN/FAUNA CREATIVE

Donation creates a public legacy SCHROEDER— Atop Maine’s Mount Katahdin, Mike Freed found inspiration in the words of Percival Proctor Baxter, a visionary governor of that state. In the 1920s, Baxter purchased the land surrounding the mountain from a lumber company and donated it to the state for the creation of a park named in his honor: Baxter State Park. A famous quote of Baxter’s was what inspired Freed: “Man is born to die. His works are short-lived. Buildings crumble, monuments decay, and wealth vanishes, but Katahdin in all its glory forever shall remain the mountain for all the people of Maine.” In October, The Nature Conservancy announced that it acquired from Freed 2,110 acres north of the North Shore community of Schroeder comprising wild lakes, trout streams and large white pines and white spruce—all within the Superior National Forest. The lands are located within a 30,000acre block of largely intact forest in Cook County on the edge of the Boundary Waters and in the Temperance River watershed, which flows into Lake Superior. The properties, the only private inholdings in this part of Superior National Forest, are considered highly complex and resilient under TNC’s new Resilient and Connected Network mapping tool, which was created to help identify and connect areas to give native plants and wildlife the best chance to survive in the face of climate change. Mike Freed, a retired forestry professor who calls Minnesota his “home base,” began purchasing back in 1994 when a land development company listed it for sale as sites for new cabins. The property is composed of 12 parcels encompassing 972 acres of wetlands, three miles of area streams, significant

lakes. While the properties include shoreline on two accessible fishing lakes, Fourmile and Richey, they also include remote and pristine waters, such as Cedar Lake. “Cedar Lake is remote and has no game fish,” Freed said. “It’s wonderful for scientific study because it hasn’t been manipulated— no one added fish to it.”

Lake ecology is of particular interest to Freed, because he studied aspects of lakes as a grad student. During his professional career, he worked on a research plan for Lake Baikal, the world’s largest lake by volume, to allow for economic development while maintaining water quality. Freed sold the property to TNC for sig-

These places are rapidly disappearing. My gift to the people of Minnesota is 2,000 acres of wild land that will remain in some kind of conservation ownership. This is the gift that the people of Minnesota deserve.” Protecting and restoring forests in Minnesota is also one of the best natural climate solutions available in the state to help tackle climate change because forests remove a lot of carbon from the atmosphere. TNC will explore different alternatives for

long-term conservation ownership and management of the property including holding onto select tracts to study and demonstrate how to best sustainably manage timber production in a changing climate. Following the announcement of the acquisition and speaking with the media about it, Freed planned to head into the woods for some peace and quiet. “I spend a lot of my life in a tent,” he said. —Shawn Perich

WAWA— Imagine if a species that has roamed Lake Superior’s shores for thousands of years was about to disappear and no one did anything about it. Conservationists are raising the alarm that such a situation is occurring right now along the mainland of Ontario’s North Shore, where no woodland caribou were observed during an aerial survey last winter.

remaining mainland caribou. If they can locate the animals early this winter, before they take shelter in thick conifer cover, they would net and transfer them to a predator-free island to rebuild their numbers before returning them to the mainland. It is thought these caribou have the genetics that provide them the best chance for survival when restored to the mainland.

The 2020 survey followed up a more extensive survey in 2019, when biologists estimated that perhaps only 20 caribou remained in the approximately 45-mile (straight line measurement) stretch of shoreline between Schreiber and Marathon, Ontario.

In the past, the Lake Superior population was linked to Ontario’s primary caribou population in the northern portion of the province. That link was severed due to human activities such as timber harvest, which creates habitat better suited to moose. Because there are typically more moose than caribou on the landscape, the large animals provide a food source that leads to greater numbers of wolves. Caribou are more susceptible to wolf predation than moose.

Caribou have been sparsely distributed on the rugged mainland and nearshore islands in the northeast part of Lake Superior in the last few decades. Up to about 10 years ago, a restored population of caribou was present on the mainland of Lake Superior Provincial Park in the Great Lakes forest type on the east side of the lake. Caribou also remained in the boreal forest of Pukaskwa National Park in the northeast corner of the lake until just under 10 years ago. A very small population of caribou may still be present along the far north shore of Lake Superior between Schreiber and Marathon. Caribou also exist on a handful of islands, where a last-ditch net-and-transfer effort saved them from extirpation on Michipicoten Island. Caribou there had numbered nearly 1,000 in 2014 when three or four wolves crossed a rare ice bridge to reach the island. When the 2018 net-and-transfer operation occurred, only 15 caribou were rescued. Most were transferred to the Slate Islands, where wolves had crossed an ice bridge the same year and decimated the existing caribou population down to just two bulls—and then starved. Others were transferred to Caribou Island, far offshore in Lake Superior and wolf-free. Populations are presently increasing in both locations. Conservationists hope they will be able to transfer animals from these herds to restore caribou on other islands and the mainland where they once existed. Now, if possible, conservationists want to accomplish a similar objective with the

Along the rugged, far northern shore of Lake Superior, excellent caribou habitat still exists—old conifers shrouded with lichens and lichen-carpeted rock outcrops. Moose and wolves now occupy the North Shore, but it is thought that they can be returned to a level where caribou can co-exist. While the lakeshore habitat is separated from the current caribou range north of Highway 11, it is extensive enough to support an isolated caribou population. However, if the Lake Superior mainland population disappears, it is unlikely to return. Retired provincial wildlife biologist and caribou advocate Gord Eason doesn’t want that to occur. “What we may now be witnessing is the extirpation of Lake Superior’s mainland caribou,” he said. “Once they are lost, the range of caribou on the mainland recedes north about 100 km. This type of population loss and range recession is the process of extinction.” Eason and other conservationists, as well as the Michipicoten First Nation, have reached out to the Ontario provincial government, so far with minimal success. Death doulas—

Guides on the final journey of life GRAND MARAIS— None of us remember, let alone directed, the circumstances of our births. But now we may be able to have a say in the circumstances of our death when our time comes, as inevitably it must. Enter the Death Doulas of Cook County: Jean Skeels, Suzanne Sherman, Margy Nelson and Pat Campanaro. “There are doulas to assist our being born,” says Nelson. “A death doula is related to that, for people who need someone to walk with them on their final journey.” “I never knew how much death was like birth,” says Karen Kobey, who recently lost her longtime partner, Ellen Stubbs, to cancer. “You can’t know ahead what it’s going to be like. It’s work—that’s what I learned from Suzanne (Sherman).” Kobey’s experience of the decline and death of her partner is illustrative of the work of the doulas. “Suzanne met with us, shared resources, listened to us. There were a lot of questions to think about, especially as Ellen needed more and more care,” she remembers. “There was so much involved, and Suzanne pointed out that I didn’t have to be responsible for all of it.” In the journey toward a loved-one’s death, the survivor(s) may find themselves overwhelmed with powerful emotions and a feeling of helplessness. “Suzanne told me that what I was feeling was normal in such an experience,” Kobey says. “She was there for both Ellen and I, urging me to accept the help and guidance I needed. And she was right: you can never be ready for this.” Fortunately, Kobey also had a well of support upon which to draw, and not only for perspective. Her spiritual community and network of friends provided other needful help, like meals and keeping vigil so that Kobey could take an occasional break. And in her role as friend and doula, Sherman kept vigil with them in Stubbs’ final hours. In keeping with the mandate of the doulas, Sherman also assisted with such details as notifying the funeral home, and provided aftercare and follow-up for Kobey in the ensuing weeks.

Cook County Death Doulas [L-R]: Jean Skeels, Margy Nelson, Pat Campanaro and Suzanne Sherman. | SUBMITTED and in our work, we get to see some of the wonderful things that people want to put on the table.” “It’s all about what the dying person wants,” Sherman says. “What do you want to see? Smell? Hear? Who do you want with you, and so on? We as doulas are a neutral but caring presence, and confidentiality is huge with us.” “One of the big things about being a death doula is being able to touch, comfort the dying and the survivors,” say Sherman and Nelson. “But now with COVID-19, we can’t

work like that just yet. We can Zoom with the family, at least, and we can still offer aftercare, which is so important. We don’t just walk away once the dying person is gone.” For more information, contact Care Partners at (218) 3873788 or visit: carepartnersofcookcounty.org. The next Death Café convenes at 6 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 19, online. Watch for an announcement.—Peter Fergus-Moore

“Care Partners here was very helpful, too,” Kobey says. “We have no hospice, but there is the care nurse and the doulas. I am in a wash of gratitude for the support we’ve had.” In keeping with their work as part of a holistic approach to the end of life, the doulas often work as a team as well as in cooperation with Cook County’s Care Partners program. Now in their second year, the doulas are still a relatively new phenomenon in the area. “Not a lot of people know about this,” says Nelson. “So, part of what we do is an education process.” To that end, the doulas organize what are called Death Cafés monthly in Grand Marais. “We create a space,” Sherman says, “where people can talk about death, ask questions, express fears and grieving around it.” The cafés, now convened on Zoom due to the pandemic, do not go with planned agendas, but rather change in theme, depending on who attends. Sometimes, the time is taken up with an emotional sharing about a loved-one’s death. “Some of those who come, tell us that they can’t talk about this anywhere else,” says Nelson. “Some people are scared,” Sherman adds, “but this process can take some of the sting out of death.” Taking the sting out of death is not for the faint-hearted or the untrained. All the doulas received formal training and are in the process of certification from the International End of Life Doula Association (INELDA). The Cook County doulas are deeply enthusiastic about the program.

GRAND MARAIS— In striving to protect both the ozone layer and climate system, the Cook County Whole Foods Co-op’s refrigeration practices have brought national attention to town again. For the second consecutive year, the Co-op was recognized for its achievements in reducing harmful refrigerant emissions. The United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) GreenChill Partnership presented the Co-op with the Best Emissions Rate award for achieving the lowest refrigerant emissions rate among small supermarket Partners. The announcement was made by EPA during its annual GreenChill Recognition Event, which was held virtually this year on September 24. “We congratulate Cook County Whole Foods Co-op for their achievements as a GreenChill Partner,” said Kirsten Cappel, GreenChill program manager. “This is the second year in a row that the Co-op has received this recognition, demonstrating their sustained commitment to environmental protection by reducing their refrigerant emissions. We applaud the Co-op for their environmental leadership.”

Let’s make 2020 a memorable Christmas across the Northern Wilds.

Reducing the impact of harmful refrigerant emissions is important for protecting the environment and also benefits public health. If every supermarket in the United States met the GreenChill Partners’ average emissions of refrigerants, the supermarket industry would save more than $160 million in refrigerant replacement costs and reduce annual refrigerant emissions by 30 million metrics tons carbon dioxide, equivalent to 3.4 million homes’ energy use for one year. The Co-op is proud to be part of the group of supermarkets leading the industry in reducing refrigerant emissions and transitioning to environmentally-friendlier refrigerants. Points North On personal bests By Shawn Perich

Deer antlers on wooden plaques adorn the walls of my office. It is rare for someone to remark about them when they come into the office. That’s fine. I don’t have the antlers there to impress anyone. I just needed a place to hang them. Occasionally, I’ll look up at the antlers, not to admire them, but to reflect on past times. I’ll recall on the circumstances that allowed me to cross paths with a wary whitetail buck and successfully kill it. But I’ll also think about my hunting companions on the day it happened and how difficult it was to get the heavy animal out of the woods. The memories matter far more to me than the size of the antlers on the wall. It’s been years since the last time I mounted antlers on a wooden plaque, although I save the antlers from every buck I’ve killed. Many are heaped in a pile in the garage, along with shed antlers from moose and deer. I sometimes wonder what to do with this collection, but so far haven’t decided to part with it. Other hunters may feel the same way. Since hardly anyone other than me ever sees these antlers, I’m not hanging on to them for bragging rights. In fact, if you ask a couple of weeks after deer season how many points were on the antlers of the buck I killed, most likely I won’t remember. But if you ask me about the hunt, who was with me and how hard it was to get the deer out of the woods, I’ll answer you in boring detail. All of this leaves me scratching my head about the concept of “personal best” or “PB,” which is all the rage with hunters and anglers on social media. To me, if you take PB and add J, you’ve got the makings of a pretty good sandwich, which always confuses me when someone remarks “Got my PB” while hoisting a live fish or squatting beside a dead deer. The definition of PB, if there is one, seems to be the specimen you are holding is the biggest one you’ve caught or killed. For too many of today’s hunters and anglers, equating “biggest” with “best” seems to be the sum total of their hunting and fishing experiences. Too often, they go to great effort and expense to tip the odds in their favor. There is no end of gadgets and potions intended to make it easier to lure, fool and artificially 12

At the end of the day, whether or not I’ve killed a deer, I’ll have stories to tell. | CHRIS MCEVOY fool a wild creature’s incredible ability to avoid humans and other predators. You can argue that such devices have been part of hunting since an early hunter twisted some reeds together to make a duck decoy. You can also point out that it’s hard to draw a definitive line on hunting and fishing technology in a world where scope-sighted rifles and sophisticated fishing electronics are the norm. This is true, but many of us intuitively know when we cross a boundary, even if perfectly legal, that gives us an unfair advantage over our quarry. We may all choose to draw our personal line in a different place, but only some of us will choose to cross it. There’s a couple of primary reasons someone will make that choice. The first is laziness. Someone with limited time, skills or even lackadaisical interest in the outdoors may choose to shoot a deer from a heated blind situated over a food plot simply because it is the most comfortable and easiest way to legally kill a deer. In a world where many folks are more at home in a box store parking lot than they are in the woods, so be it. The second motivator is the quest for a PB. Call it antler worship or trophy syndrome, a lot of folks aren’t satisfied unless the big one doesn’t get away. While there is nothing wrong with being proud of a trophy-sized animal or fish, when it becomes

the most important aspect of your hunting and fishing experience, you may be willing to cut some corners to achieve success. Provided you stay within the bounds of the law, you’re entitled to do so. But I probably won’t be impressed with the pictures you post on social media. So often, it seems, those trophy pictures appear without a story, because there isn’t much of a story to tell. Watching a buck with your trail cameras so you can “pattern” its movements doesn’t involve much skill beyond camera positioning. If you lured it within shooting range with a scent potion you made yourself, you may have the makings of a good tale. If you bought the potion off the shelf at a box store, not so much. If it was impossible for the buck to see your movements or catch your scent on the breeze because you were hidden inside an enclosed blind, you performed an assassination. That’s not a hunt.

Shawn Perich’s POINTS NORTH online

If that’s how you choose to use your time in November, so be it. I prefer to feel the cold sting on my cheeks at sunrise. When it is time for lunch, I like to find a comfortable place to sit in the sun and enjoy a simple sandwich. At the end of the day, whether or not I’ve killed a deer, I’ll have stories to tell. You can never predict when it happens. A nearly imperceptible sound suddenly becomes the footsteps of an approaching deer. You catch a flicker of movement in the brush and the buck you seek steps into view. Often, you have just seconds to make the shot before he disappears into the dense forest. If he catches your scent or detects motion as you lift the rifle, he’ll be gone. It’s now or never as you squeeze the trigger. Whether or not you make the shot, those brief moments will be seared into your memory. I guess that’s what I call a personal best.

She introduces people to a product that many folks have never heard of via what she calls “the old-fashioned way” by going door to door. When she meets someone face to face, she strikes up a conversation to explain her product: supplemental insurance from Globe Life Family Heritage Division. As a licensed agent, she sells and services insurance plans. So, what is supplemental insurance? Melissa says it is an optional coverage that pays money to you and your family for major illnesses, accidents and injuries, including cancer, heart attack or stroke and other hospitalizations. Supplemental insurance can help you pay for costs not covered by health insurance, such as co-payments, travel expenses, housing costs and more. “Great health insurance is wonderful, but the indirect costs associated with a health crisis are huge, sometimes as much as the medical costs,” Melissa says. “Our supplemental policies pay cash directly to you, which may save your financial life.” An additional benefit of Globe Life’s supplemental insurance is all policies offer 100 percent return of the premiums you paid minus any claims. If your claims exceed the amount you’ve paid in premiums, you pay nothing extra. If you pass away, your beneficiaries would receive your premiums. For Melissa, the benefits of having a supplemental policy are summed up by the Globe Life Family Heritage Division’s mission statement: To help provide financial security and peace of mind to families when the unexpected occurs. “I’ve always wanted a career that helps people through difficult times,” she says. “I want to be there for you when you have a crisis.”

We develop unique homegrown health solutions to help address gaps, support our local health care and emergency services, and provide grants to many community organizations, so they can be there for you. VOLUNTEERING:

A Meaningful Way to Give Back By Rae Poynter As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to shape our world in unforeseen ways, the importance of reaching out to those most in need has become ever more pertinent. Older adults are a segment of the population that has been particularly affected by the pandemic and lockdowns of 2020. Three different organizations along the North Shore—Age Well Arrowhead, Community Partners and Meals on Wheels—provide vital services to older adults such as transportation, meals and home visits. Volunteers are a vital part of each organization, and lending a hand is one of the most meaningful ways to give back to the community. would be taking grocery orders, which is done from home. Regardless of whether a volunteer is working in person or remotely, all volunteers are provided with the support and training needed to feel confident about the work they’re doing.

Age Well Arrowhead is a nonprofit based in Duluth, with the goal of helping older adults live independently for as long as possible. Mary Bovee has been the executive director of Age Well Arrowhead for five years, and said that the organization’s many operations can be divided into four main categories: in-home support, caregiver counseling, consultation services and training. While volunteers are needed in many different areas, one particular need since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic has been companionship. Volunteering as a companion means spending time with someone experiencing cognitive decline and providing them with someone new to spend time with while giving caregivers a break. Activities could include reading books, looking at photographs, playing games together, or helping with light tasks such as meal planning or running errands. “With adult day centers closed since the pandemic started, people are really in need of companionship,” Bovee said. Age Well Arrowhead also utilizes volunteers for providing transportation for anything from vital appointments to outings. “We have volunteers who drive people 14

Though based in Duluth, Age Well Arrowhead offers services outside Duluth including Cloquet, Hermantown, Proctor, Superior, and everywhere in between. Bovee stressed the importance of providing services to older adults who live in rural areas as those places are often underserved. “We always encourage people who live in remote locations to volunteer,” she said. “It’s a great opportunity to reach out to neighbors who may need help. Many older adults want to keep living remotely, even if they don’t have as much access to services.” Age Well Arrowhead is a nonprofit based in Duluth, with the goal of helping older adults live independently. Bovee said some have felt hesitant to volunteer due to fears of transmitting the virus to an older adult; while such concerns are valid, Age Well Arrowhead provides volunteers and participants with masks, hand sanitizers and trainings on safety protocols. Additionally, some volunteer opportunities are 100 percent remote: an example

Community Partners Community Partners in Two Harbors seeks to support independence for people over 60. Dana Thewis is the volunteer coordinator who oversees the various programs through Community Partners, including grocery shopping, transportation, and assisting with snow removal. “Recruiting volunteers has definitely changed since the pandemic,” she said. “We used to be able to recruit face-to-face and reach out at events, which aren’t happening. We had many people reach out in March and April asking how they could help, but we are in need of more volunteers, especially as winter is approaching. The arrival of winter means an increased need for the services that Community Partners provides, especially as icy roads and sidewalks make travel for older adults more difficult. With student volunteers back in school and seasonal residents leaving for the winter, the need for support becomes even more pressing. One of the most impactful ways to help older adults in the community is by volunteering to remove snow. Over the winter, Community Partners gets regular calls from people who need shoveling or snow

blowing done. Older adults who can’t get shoveled out are sometimes stuck, and that can affect whether volunteers can get to their house for other services such as Meals on Wheels. Thewis said that most snow removal companies prioritize clearing snow for businesses first, and that it can be hard for individuals who need timely help to find it, especially for those who live out of town. “If you see someone whose driveway isn’t cleared, go clear it!” Thewis said. “We need volunteers but we also want to get people thinking about looking out for their neighbors. If your neighbor has a need and you can help, we don’t have to be in the middle scheduling it.” Another way volunteers can help older adults during the winter months is grocery shopping. Volunteer shoppers go to Super One in Two Harbors to buy up to 25 grocery and household items for participants. Participants in the program have a pre-paid card that volunteers bring with them, and after shopping they deliver the items to the participant’s house. Some volunteers shop for the same person every week, getting to know their specific needs, while others fill in casually as needed. In addition to the regular opportunities at Community Partners, Thewis said they are always open to new ideas. “Sometimes people think of ideas we’ve never done be-

fore—maybe they want to handwrite cards for people, or have another way they want to reach out. Whatever your idea is, ask.” Those who are interested in learning more can contact Dana Thewis at (218) 834-8024 or commpart.vc@gmail.com. Potential volunteers complete an application and phone interview.

Meals on Wheels Further up the shore in Cook County, the Meals on Wheels program offers meal delivery to older adults who are homebound. Meals on Wheels is well-established throughout the US, and most communities across the nation have Meals on Wheels or a similar food delivery program. Food delivery programs help improve the physical and mental health of participants and decrease food insecurity for individuals who cannot grocery shop or prepare meals alone. Locally, Meals on Wheels is one of the nutrition services offered through The Hub in Grand Marais, in addition to takeout lunches and frozen meals that are available for the weekends. The meals are prepared at The Hub, and volunteers for the Meals on Wheels program pick up the meals and take them out for delivery to homebound individuals. The cost of the program is re-

Like many organizations, The Hub has faced both challenges and opportunities while serving communities like Grand Marais during the coronavirus pandemic. Chris Bautch from The Hub foresees an increased need for services like Meals on Wheels over the winter months; that compounded with older volunteers stepping back for their own health means that new volunteers will be a welcome addition to the team. “Since the start of the pandemic all of our Meals on Wheels is contactless,” Bautch said. “Volunteers drop off the meals at a designated spot in the apartment buildings or people’s homes, so there’s no interaction between volunteers and participants, keeping it safe for everyone.” While regular volunteers are preferred, Bautch said that delivery driving is not a big time commitment: Once the driver learns the route, deliveries typically only take half an hour. Currently, Meals on Wheels serves participants within a five-mile radius of Grand Marais, though Bautch said expanding to the West End may be a future possibility, depending on the interest and availability of volunteers from that part of the county. Apart from Meals on Wheels, The Hub has a wealth of resources available and other volunteer opportunities for those not keen on driving. Takeout and frozen meals are available for all ages, with seniors over 60 getting a discount. Those interested in volunteering with The Hub or learning about other programs available can get in touch at (218) 387-2660 or seniors@boreal.org.

Life Measured in Dogs By Eric Chandler

That summer, he picked the free runt of a litter in Jackson Hole. While my father worked on horseback, the black Lab puppy curled up inside his shirt and slept. My dad said, “I think that’s why we were so bonded.” My dad’s crew put the dog in the bed of a truck once and drove to work. When they piled out of the cab, the dog had a big round belly from eating all their lunches. Hence, Garbage Gut. I just called him Fred.

Fred was there before my dad met my mom. Before they married and had me and my sister. My dad said Fred was never jealous of all the new arrivals to the pack. I look at old photos and notice a patch of white on his chest that I forgot about. Fred loved the water. My dad threw a retrieving buoy for him at a local pond. He only

stopped because his arm got tired, not because Fred was done. I loved the water, too. Fred and I swam together. I can still feel his tail in my hands as he dragged me around like a slow waterskier. I can also feel Fred’s neck as I hugged him on the kitchen floor when I was 10. I cried into his neck until my dad took him to the vet to put him down. He was 14 and his liver was failing. This year, our good friends down the street had to put down their Whippet named Dash. He was my current dog’s good buddy. When they lost Dash, I thought about Fred. Several other people I know have lost their dogs this year, because things weren’t

Fred retrieves for Stephen Chandler, 1965. | NATALIE CHANDLER crappy enough. I was shaken by these deaths. What is it about dogs? Not long after Fred died, my parents found another runt. A German shorthaired pointer. My mom said, “We picked him because he seemed more active than the rest of the litter.” That was a mistake. We named him Jack. Fred used to live outside. After the pink-bellied puppy stage, we took Jack out to live in Fred’s old

Jack and I in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, around 1982. | STEPHEN CHANDLER doghouse. He literally chewed that house to the ground. We trained Jack to hunt upland game birds like ruffed grouse and woodcock. He pointed for a little bit, but he couldn’t wait. Jack flushed the birds before we got close enough. We attached a bell to his collar so we could follow him as he ran berserk through the undergrowth. Finally, my dad tied about 30 feet of nylon rope to his collar to slow him down. When Jack briefly pointed, one of us ran up and stood on the rope to hold him back. Then the other hunter came up to flush the bird. This worked, sometimes. Mostly, we heard [dingalingalingalingzzzzzzzzzzzzz] as the bell and rope went by, followed by the sound of grouse taking off, invisible, somewhere ahead. Then, my dad’s frustrated scream: “JACK!”

my wife and kids started a drumbeat about getting a dog. I warned them it would be like having a toddler that won’t grow up for the next 15 years. They were relentless. In 2011, we went to Animal Allies in Duluth and found a refugee from Iowa. We call him Leo. We think he’s a Lab/border collie mix. My life can be measured in dogs. I think about my three dogs and wonder if that’s how a pine tree feels about people. Watching several shorter lives start and end, while your own life goes on and on. Fred was my first dog. Here I am petting Fred, taken in 1967. | NATALIE CHANDLER care of and bear witness to and love. He gets us out of our own heads. Leo is a blessing, especially now. Leo has gone from shiny black to gray while we racked up all those miles. When you do the math, he’s a decade older than me. Like autumn, Leo’s time is finite. Winter will come. Leo’s life will end. He’s the only dog my kids have known. Leo is their Fred. He even has Fred’s white chest. I’m trying to prepare for the end, but I’ll fail. When Leo goes, I will break.

My dad’s job with the U.S. Forest Service then took us from Michigan to New Hampshire. Our new home wasn’t as birdy and I was a high-schooler who had other things on his mind. So, Jack’s second career was mountain climber. My dad, Jack and I climbed dozens of peaks in the White Mountain National Forest. Jack loved it. I walked hundreds of miles with Jack, first hunting and then hiking.

I want to write something worthy of Leo. Worthy of all my dogs. Of all dogs. Until I do, you should read a poem called “A Dog Has Died” by Pablo Neruda. Here’s part of it:

I left home and joined the military. In 1989, when Jack was around 10, I was in pilot training with the U.S. Air Force in Phoenix. My dad called me and said, “We had to put Jack down. I didn’t want you to hear it from anybody else.” Jack had cancerous growths throughout his body and he was in a lot of pain. “Thanks for telling me, Dad,” I said. I went to the liquor store and bought a bottle of whiskey. It was kind of funny. Who else would I hear it from, Pop? The CBS Evening News? USA Today? I sat on the stoop and watched the setting sun turn some thunderheads orange. I drank the bottle and wept. Even now, I miss Jack more than I miss most people. Then, I went 20 years without a dog. I was busy learning to fly, getting married, having kids, and deploying to the Middle East. Toward the end of my military career,

Joyful, joyful, joyful, as only dogs know how to be happy with only the autonomy of their shameless spirit. There are no good-byes for my dog who has died, and we don’t now and never did lie to each other.

Leo and I just finished a project. We hiked all 65 miles of the Border Route Trail through the Boundary Waters. We hiked the Kekekabic Trail together in 2018. We ran the whole Superior Hiking Trail in sections in 2014. Leo traveled all 415 miles of those three connected trails with me.

We’ve never hunted, but Leo sure took up where Jack left off as the outdoor athlete. My dog teaches me. Leo lives permanently in the present. He chases every chipmunk like it was the first one he’s ever seen. He’s always ready to play outside. He takes pleasure in simple things like rolling on his back. There’s no deceit. He wants your food and he can’t hide that desire. He’s a creature outside of me, outside the bodies of my family. A soul that we take

Recently, my family walked along the Grand Portage Trail in Jay Cooke State Park. Leo chased squirrels under the fiery foliage of the oaks and maples. We laughed as he happily plunged into the St. Louis River. He was the embodiment of pure honesty. We saw the infinite now through Leo’s eyes. I don’t want to live without a dog ever again.

As a boat builder, my favorite kind of project is to build a new custom wooden boat. To be sure, taking care of and repairing old boats is good work that I enjoy. It is a virtue to keep an old thing going and it is amazing how long a cedar and oak boat can last if well cared for. Beyond utilitarian values however, using old boats is a way to respect and learn from our history. However, building a boat from scratch is uniquely satisfying. The fairing up of molds, watching the curves take shape, and making something beautifully complex from simple materials is very exciting. Going above and beyond and making customizations to make the boat perfect for the client is really what makes me want to do this work. Anyone who is interested in wooden boat building is interested in history. Boats have been built for thousands of years in multitudes of shapes to serve a variety of specialized functions. I believe that there is very little innovative that can be done in boat design and my goal as a boat builder is to breathe new life into traditional designs. There has been a fair amount of work done by wooden boat builders to document and preserve old boat designs from the east coast. The Whitehall from New York Harbor, Swampscott Dory of Massachusetts and Maine Peapod are a few examples of these now famous historical east coast designs. Little work has been done documenting the wooden boats of the Great Lakes, and in response, I have set about trying to document old wooden boats from Minnesota. We have a long fishing history, and a rich boating culture from our many inland lakes in Minnesota. While our hard winters do a number on boats and growth of the composites and aluminum industry has dominated the market with cheap mass-produced boats, there are a handful of old wooden boats in peoples garages and backyards that we have an opportunity to learn from. I started this work by documenting a locally built, outboard-powered, herring

That boat was built in Croftville in the 1940s and was on the verge of completely falling apart before I was able to take the lines from it. Some 70 years later we have started building a replica of it through community efforts at North House Folk School. I aim to continue documenting historic boats from Minnesota. There are very interesting and useful boat designs from around the state’s history. A variety of fishing boat designs beyond the Croftville herring skiff were built and used by commercial fishermen on Lake Superior. Row boats were built by shops around the state from Winona on the Mississippi River to lakes around the Twin Cities metro, and used as far north as Gunflint Trail resorts. Wooden pleasure launches and passenger ferries were built and used around the state too, and wooden sailboats were

11 am a-collection 5 pm I would like to put together of wooden boat plans endemic to Minnesota to encourage local boat enthusiasts to build from our history. Much of the interest in, and work for wooden boat builders is repair and rebuilding old wooden boats. This work is important, practical and I enjoy doing it. It preserves history, conserves resources and keeps our traditions alive. Building a new version of a local traditional boat accomplishes many of the same ends. While building boats uses valuable and scarce tree species like northern white cedar, white oak, white pine and tamarack, we do have small amounts of these local woods available and using them in a boat project is putting those trees to their highest possible use. These boats were designed with local conditions in mind and will still offer superior performance in unique Minnesota waters to boats designed for the national or global market I hope to encourage hobbyists to pursue their own projects building replicas of historic local boats and potential boat buyers to commission construction of new wooden boats. Sport fisherman might like to fish out of a Lake Superior herring skiff. Pleasure boaters might enjoy a row boat model that originated in Winona or Duluth. Preserving traditions through your boating and boat building deepens the experience and creates a unique source of pride in your boat. Josh Tolkan is a boat builder in the Artisan Development program at North House Folk School, where traditional craft is taught on the shore of Lake Superior.

Adam Swanson Painting Science Fiction CREATIVE SPACE: By Eric Weicht Adam Swanson—best known for his colorful, expressive paintings that explore tensions between humanity, technology, and the natural world—is an artist with a passion for science and a love of science fiction. “I have been into science fiction as long as I have been excited about art,” recalls Swanson, who grew up steeped in Star Wars and Star Trek, as well as the written works of major authors and scientists such as Isaac Asimov, Carl Sagan, Kurt Vonnegut, Margaret Atwood and Michael Crichton, to name a few. “Thinking about outer space, technology and humanity’s quest for a deeper understanding of our universe has always been a source of inspiration for me,” says Swanson. “It’s always amazed me to see how our dreams and philosophies of the past change according to current circumstances.” Swanson grew up near the Twin Cities in Maplewood, Minn., before moving to Duluth in 1997 to obtain his BFA from the University of Minnesota, Duluth. When asked why he chose Duluth as a place to study art, Swanson credits Lake Superior and the surrounding wilderness. “I’m passionate about the outdoors,” says Swanson, who has done a number of extended canoe trips in the Arctic and Queti20

co Provincial Park, as well as a “yearly trip or two to the Boundary Waters” with his wife and two children. After receiving his BFA from UMD in 2001, Swanson spent a good part of the early 2000s working odd jobs for teams of scientific researchers in Antarctica while taking the opportunity to travel and explore the world. “Working in Antarctica remains one of the most formative experiences of my life,” says Swanson. “It allowed me lots of time to travel and explore every continent, and offered some of the most amazing sights and sounds that I will probably ever experience.” Initially, Swanson worked 13 months as a carpenter at the South Pole Station, with a few months spent working at McMurdo on the southern tip of Ross Island. From there he went on to work as a Boating Coordinator at Palmer Station, followed by a stint as a Marine Technician aboard the R/V Laurence M. Gould in the Antarctic Ocean. “My jobs on the ice were somewhat all consuming,” says Swanson, “but I did manage to make a handful of paintings and a number of drawings during that time.” “That being said,” continues Swanson, “when I finished up my most recent con-

predictably, appear throughout his paintings. The practice of adding colorful dots to his paintings is, according to Swanson, something that he started doing in order to “loosen up” his work.

While working out of someone’s basement that he was renting, Swanson took the opportunity to dive deep into his work as an artist and began spending 10-14 hours of each day painting.

“When I begin a painting,” says Swanson, “it is easy to be loose and expressive, but as the painting progresses it tends to get more detailed and I take less risks.”

“When the money ran out,” says Swanson, “I got a job bartending, but was able to ween myself off of that job over the course of a few years.” Today, Swanson makes his living as a full-time artist with a combination of commissioned paintings, gallery sales and grants for personal projects. Swanson describes his style of painting as loose representational, meaning that he paints recognizable shapes while incorporating some amount of abstraction. “I like my paintings to appear fast and expressive,” says Swanson. In addition to his passion for painting, Swanson has always had a strong interest in photography and film, something that he puts to good use in his paintings behind the scenes. “My studio is always filled with my snapshots of landscapes, machinery and animals,” says Swanson. “I select, recompose, and paint the most interesting details, so my paintings are often comprised of more than a dozen study images.” One of the most recognizable aspects of Swanson’s work are the colorful dots and other geometrical shapes that, rather un-

“In order to loosen back up,” continues Swanson, “I lay my paintings on the ground and splatter watery paint on them to retrieve some of the uncultivated energy. Caring too much for any particular piece of a painting is dangerous and can leave me feeling frustrated, so this act of play has become a ritual for me and I usually take a few moments to splatter paint on my work.” Swanson continues to incorporate his passion for science into his many projects, something that is clearly on display in his most recent project featuring the federally endangered animals of Minnesota. In this project, Swanson gathered information on these endangered species from local researchers, and then turned that information into a series of 15 paintings that feature these creatures in unconventional ways. “This was a great opportunity for me to blend my personal thoughts and feelings into some of the hard science of our region,” says Swanson. The North Shore Dish Sausage-Making Traditions By Chuck Viren

Meat cutting is an age-old profession. The tricks of the trade have been passed on from generation to generation. That knowledge includes the art of making sausages. Evidence of sausage making goes back many thousands of years. In talking with sausage makers from Old World Meats in Duluth and Gene’s IGA and Johnson’s Foods in Grand Marais, it is clear that the old traditions of sausage making are being handed down within families and to younger mentees. At Old World Meats in Duluth, there are five generations of Wrazidlos in the meat business. Owner/operator Paul Wrazidlo says his grandfather opened Frank’s Meats in Duluth’s West End in 1951. Most of his cousins, aunts and uncles are also in the meat business. The long experience in the meat business extends beyond the family at their store, too. As other meat markets have closed their doors, Frank had employed the best people from those stores. He claims the people behind the counter at his store have a combined experience in the business of over 200 years. According to Frank, their business is, “one big family of the best who have stayed in the business.” When someone walks into their store, they will be greeted by the wood-smoke aroma of their four smokehouses that are running constantly. So, when it comes to sausage, what does he sell? The best seller of their up to 50 varieties is the Landjager. They produce 20,000 snack sticks a day and sell them as far away as Guam. The Landjager was originally a round sausage, but when it was discovered it could dry faster after it was pressed between two boards, it developed its flat shape. As two links are produced tied together, the links could be fit into a belt loop and was used as rations for the German army. It has a real old-world flair due to its smokiness and flavors of caraway. Other popular varieties are their Philly cheese brat, their blueberry wild rice brat, and their beer brat, which is also served at Grandma’s restaurants. While Old World Meats does take in venison for processing, I asked Paul to give advice to those who would prefer to make their sausage at home. He said, ”Do it! It will be fun.” He cautioned about getting the seasonings right, however, especially the salt. He recommended that people go to their local meat market and have them measure the seasonings.

At Johnson’s Foods in Grand Marais, Marlo Larson and Kelli Lawrence like to work with a variety of meats in their sausage recipes. They commonly work with elk, chicken, turkey and lamb, in additional to the traditional pork. | KELLI LAWRENCE Jarid Lashinski of Gene’s IGA in Grand Marais learned the trade from his father, Gene and has about 20 years experience. Gene was a meat cutter for the store before he bought it from the Poynters in 1978. He says his father has been a mentor and a great resource for him; he now cherishes

his memories of working behind the meat counter with his dad. Lashinski inherited a lot of sausage recipes from his father, including their old recipe for Swedish potato sausage. They also made a lot of bratwurst and Italian sausage in the early years. However, Lashinski loves

to tinker with recipes and estimates he has made around 50 different varieties over the years. Among his innovations are discovering a partially dehydrated cheese for his cheddar brats that melts at a higher temperature so that the cheese doesn’t all run out of the brat when it cooks. That of course led

to the discovery of the bacon cheeseburger brat. He recently developed a chorizo. Lashinski has also done a lot with wild rice. One of his discoveries is how well onion pairs with wild rice in a brat. That eventually led to the Sasquach brat, which combines wild rice, onion, swiss cheese, and of course bacon. Then there is the Jack Pine Savage—a name he says he got from something Dale Bochovich said while coaching him in football. This brat combines wild rice, jalapeno and cheddar. Breakfast sausage is also of interest to Lashinski. In addition to the traditional pork breakfast sausage, he has perfected a maple blueberry variety. While varieties of sausage vary, there are the classics that can be found regularly in the store. He continues to sell his dad’s potato sausage year-round. He also has two varieties of bratwurst, Lashinski’s Special Recipe Bratwurst and Gene’s Favorite Bratwurst. He also sells two varieties of Italian sausage: Mom’s Mild Italian and the spicier Zesty Italian. Lashinski has observed that customers now come into the store looking for house-made sausages. Marlo Larson has been a fixture behind the meat counter at Johnson’s Foods for a long time. For the past seven years, he has been mentoring Kelli Lawrence, who has now taken over the task of sausage making. Larson and Lawrence like to work with a variety of meats in their sausage recipes. They commonly work with elk, chicken, turkey and lamb, in addition to the tradi-

tional pork. They too like to tinker with recipes. According to Larson, “Winters are long. There is lots of time to play with the recipes.” He also states, “Testing them is the best part of making them.” Lawrence says she also gets tired of making the same thing over and over, so it’s nice to try something new. She noted that “it’s never a bad idea to add onion to a recipe.” She says customer suggestions play a role in their experimentation. Lawrence says she was “poached” by Larson into the meat department when he noticed she was coming into the store early to work. She makes the sausages on Sundays when the store is closed so she can spread her materials out and work uninterrupted. Popular varieties at the store include their wild rice brat, their Italian sausage, the Moroccan lamb, and the Swedish potato sausage. Other interesting varieties include the chicken Italian with sweet peppers and the jalapeño sausage, which are sold in bulk and not in casings. Their elk brats and turkey sausage are also good sellers. Lawrence says that different varieties are popular by season, with spicier varieties such as the Moroccan lamb selling better in the summer and fall. Larson noted that tourists like to take home something different and often look to sausages. After all, he says, “You can’t always take home a T-shirt.”

In addition to examining our plans through the filters of “Available Money and Time,” COVID-19 requires us to run our planning through an extra filter called “Harm Reduction.” Harm reduction is a public health approach that first emerged in the 1990s during the AIDS crisis. It emphasizes reducing the negative consequences of potentially risky activities. It expands our evaluation of COVID risk from a binary of either “hide at home” or “business as usual” approaches and instead asks us to

YS

First, it’s a good idea to take inventory of both our needs and our resources. The “Wellness Wheel” pictured here can help you do that. For each dimension, circle the number that represents how “full” that part of your life feels: One would be “running on empty” and 10 would be “a full tank.” Then connect the dots by tracing the curve from one number to the next and look at it as a whole. How balanced is the wheel of your life? How smoothly can you roll from day to day? What areas are causing a rough ride and could use some filling in?

CI SO

Look for small ways to fill up the segments of your wheel. You don’t have to fill it up all at once. Ask yourself, “What’s the smallest, easiest thing that I could do that would make a noticeable improvement in this area?” It’s fine to move up one number at a time (or even just a fraction at a time!).

You can apply the ideas of harm reduction to your COVID marathon planning. Just round out your “Wellness Wheel” and

Northern Trails Moose and deer numbers may improve By Gord Ellis

The past decade has been a time of change for moose and deer populations in Northwestern Ontario. At the beginning of the 2000s, both moose and deer populations in the northwest were relatively stable, with whitetail deer spreading throughout the range. Then, things began to change. Here is a look at what happened and where things are at now.

Deer Two decades ago, Northwestern Ontario was quickly becoming the go-to destination for trophy whitetail bucks in North America. Deer were thriving in many parts of the northwest, with the populations especially booming in the Fort Frances, Kenora and Dryden areas. The western part of the region has a slightly more moderate climate for deer than the North Shore of Lake Superior, although the Thunder Bay district also saw a huge growth in its deer herd. Part of this spread seemed to be connected to generally milder winters, which improved survival of deer. The other factor that likely played a role on the expansion of deer numbers was the high level of forestry that was taking place at the time. In the early 2000s, I was hunting in the Vermilion Bay area, and large tracts of red pine were being cut. The disturbance seemed to be good for deer, and we had some tremendous deer hunting for several years in these new cuts. However, the two-edged sword of large cuts is access improves for hunters and for predators. By 2010, the deer population in the northwest peaked, although there was no sign that a big decline was coming. In fact, there was already enough concern about the impact deer were having on moose that the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry introduced a program that allowed hunters to buy two extra antlerless deer tags per Wildlife Management Unit (up to eight in total per hunter). This program remains in place in 2020. However, after a series of hard winters and late springs during the winters of 2013 and 2014, deer numbers across the northwest took a sharp dive. Very few areas were not impacted, with the deer herd along the shore of Lake Superior being especially hard hit. It’s been a slow climb back, but deer numbers in 2020 seem to be on the upswing across the northwest. I’ve talked

Although most Finland-area lakes are rocky, Ninemile has some weedy bays that hold pike with a shot at something pushing 40 inches. Walleye numbers are good, and when you catch them, they tend to be keepers. The lake also boasts a campground and a good concrete ramp.

VITALS: Ninemile is 296 acres. The majority of the lake is shallow, with one deep hole, located between the islands. It has good cabbage weeds, which is sort of an anomaly in an area known for its rocky lakes. Weeds are the ticket for pike, and they’ll hold walleyes and perch, too.

How these new changes to Ontario’s hunting and moose management program impact the population remain to be seen. Hopefully, a decade from now, we will be heralding a revitalized herd, and not pining for the good old days.

nd

WALLEYE: “After a partial die-off in 2013, we’ve stocked the lake in several years since then,” Mott said. “The biggest yearclass since then came from the only year we didn’t stock.” The DNR stocks walleye fry, but they account for only 36 percent of the catch, indicating good natural reproduction. “Winterkill is probably more of a thinning of the population than a traumatic event,” Mott said.

The group application system will also no longer be used.

ACCESS: Ninemile Lake is on County Road 7 about 14 miles northeast of Finland. There’s a concrete ramp in an area known for rough accesses, located on the east end of the lake. There’s parking for eight trailers and a 24-unit National Forest campground is right on site. The road is gravel most of the way from Finland, but it is plowed in the winter, providing yearround access.

Mott, assistant area supervisor at the Finland DNR fisheries office. “Like most lakes in this area, it’s more rocky than it is weedy, but it’s got enough weeds to support a good pike population.” Mott said the lake is capable of producing “memorable size” pike near the 40-inch mark. You’ll find above-average pike numbers, but still at a size that would interest anglers.

The more in demand the tag, the higher the number of points that will be required. Hunters will pay a $15 fee to apply for the allocation system, and if they receive a tag—or choose to party hunt—will then need to buy a $35 moose license. The cost of a tag will be $30 for calf, $150 for cow/calf and $200 for a bull.

One final note on moose: In 2021, there will be a radical change to how moose and moose hunting is managed in Ontario. The two-tier pool system that has been in place for some time will be replaced by a point system. This means individual hunters will gather points, and the longer they go without a tag, the more points they build. A hunter’s point total will be based on their draw history from 1993 to 2020 and will be cumulative. In other words, if the hunt-

There were several theories floated, including warming summers, ticks, over-hunting and the impact of whitetail deer, a known carrier of the parasite that causes brainworm. Deer can survive brainworm, but moose cannot. In an effort to try and stem the decline, the Ontario MNRF began to seriously cut the number of adult tags available to hunters. In 2016, there was a 45 percent cut to bull tags in WMU 15b, north of Thunder Bay. Further

The past decade has been a very disheartening one for people who love moose in the northwest. Following a pattern that first emerged in northern Minnesota and southern Manitoba in the early 2000s, the population of moose on the southern range of Northwestern Ontario began a decline. It was initially the most noticeable in the west, particularly around the Kenora, Dryden and Fort Frances areas. But by 2010, the number of moose in the Thunder Bay district, particularly close to the border with Minnesota, began to drop.

In the meantime, there does seem to be some improvement in moose numbers, even if at a somewhat low level. Friends who have property southwest of Thunder Bay, say their trail cameras have had more moose on them this year, which is a marked change from recent years. During my highway travels east of Thunder Bay this year, I’ve seen more moose than in recent memory. Hopefully, the huge tag cuts have had some impact on this, although one has to think that the downturn in deer—and the lowered incident of brain worm contact—has also been a factor. For now, the moose population seems to have stabilized, although it is still well below where it was even a decade ago.

west, in WMU 6—once a popular moose hunting destination north of Dryden—only one bull tag was made available to gun hunters. Huge cuts also came to WMU 13, near Thunder Bay, with adult tags numbers cut by well over 80 percent. The cuts to tags created a huge shift in hunter behavior, with people “chasing tags” in more remote units or giving up the hunt altogether.

Ct

with several hunters in different parts of the region this year, and the general consensus is there are more deer around, and noticeably more mature bucks. How that plays out this fall has yet to be seen, but even on my own trail cameras, I’ve seen a lot more animals than in recent seasons. That being said, predator numbers are at a very high level, with both wolf and coyote on the radar. The winter of 2020-21 will be a critical one for the region’s deer herd.

PALTRY PANFISH: Bluegills and crappies are present in Ninemile, but in low numbers. You’d be hard-pressed to find them.

MUSH LAKE RACING DOG BLOG BY ERIN ALTEMUS

Finding our Focus Last year’s racing season ended with the crushing disappointment of a scratch from my big race, the Can-Am 250. For two weeks in early March, I stewed on the decisions I could have made differently, the possibility of more triumphant outcomes, the heartbreak of defeat and the knowledge that we had spent way more dollars on racing than we won over the course of the season. And then our world crumbled. This segue into the pandemic hurtled me from my self-pity to something we all know too well now. Quarantine, nasal swab, social distancing, 6-feet, covid, symptoms, stay-at-home, self-isolation—all became part of our new lexicon in a matter of days it seemed. In our very small piece of the world, from the ridge north of Pine Mountain to the shore of Mush Lake, the spring weather held on tight. We ran dog teams into late April, running sleds across mud flats and through slush puddles while absorbing the sun on our cheeks in our then covid-free corner of the world. And while loneliness crept through most of us as we cancelled vacations and family gatherings and dance classes and school, and we stopped eating out and were afraid to even talk to our neighbors at the store, I found solace in our dogs. And now, the natural world is marching on toward winter. The fall colors have been extraordinary, and the brilliant patches of gold are coming apart as leaf by leaf the color falls to the ground. The mornings have been cold, and we are up before the sun, our breath visible in the light of our headlamps as we hook up dogs. We are focused. I attribute this focus to a world thrown into the chaos of a pandemic and election all wrapped up in one, where we can hardly stand to listen to the news and yet it just keeps coming at us. But in the early morning, it is only our headlamps and dogs screaming to run. There are two teams. Nancy and Beezus, now age 9, are still our best leaders and they are still fast enough to be on the race team. Nancy trains with each of the three

A family outing with dogs. Social distancing at its finest in late March. | ERIN ALTEMUS new leader prospects, Bruce, Pinto and Temper. Beezus runs with a new dog Dee-dee. One morning we awoke to train by 4 a.m., hooking up and running all the dogs in two teams before I would start work at 6 a.m. Last year’s season was muddled with bad luck. I found myself frequently in turmoil about keeping sled dogs at all. But sometime between my big race scratch and the hit of a pandemic, I realized that I have no interest in being idle. Without dogs, I would have no focus. And so here we are, running dogs at four in the morning and running dogs while watching the full moon rise. Harnesses on and harnesses off. Buckets of kibble and meat. Days that start and end with a collective dog yard howl. My daughter Sylvia is old enough now to wake in the morning and watch patiently from the couch for us to come back from the dog yard or cheer as the team returns from a run. But best of all for her, she has four puppies to wrangle. Born September 1, they are still nursing, but we bring them to

Last sled run of the season, April 21. | ERIN ALTEMUS the grass or sometimes inside where Sylvia covers them in a blanket and gives them each a toy. The cookie litter (Oreo, Lorna, Ginger and Chip) keeps the enthusiasm going for our future in racing. Word from the race organizations has been mixed. One race that takes place around Lake Minnetonka, the Klondike Classic, has already been cancelled. The Gunflint Mail Run will be more of a fun run than a “purse” race. Races that often draw a mixed group of mushers from Canada and America are looking at whether

they can justify running if they have only Americans or only Canadians respectively. But most races are planning to go with a covid risk plan in place—this means little to no spectators allowed. The Beargrease will most likely not allow mushers or handlers to go in buildings. But hey, in a year when most everything has been cancelled, we will forego the luxury of a warm place to rest if the race will happen. This will be a different sort of year. Our sights are set on the races, but we find joy in the training. In these strange and crazy times, my focus is on the dogs.

Wild Traditions Connecting with Place in Iceland By Julia Prinselaar

After my friends heard the news that I was going to visit Iceland, I quickly learned that this far-flung destination was on just about everyone’s bucket list. According to one friend, Iceland has “more awesome per square kilometer” than anywhere else he’s been in the world. The island straddles the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, split between shifting tectonic plates. Home to one of the world’s geologic ‘hot spots,’ active volcanoes, geysers, largerthan-life waterfalls and geothermal pools are part of everyday living for Icelandic residents and tourists. While I didn’t explore every corner of this island, the Land of Fire and Ice impressed me at every turn. Geologically speaking, we rode through one of the oldest and most remote regions of Iceland, the Westfjords. At 16 million years old, this area is far less active than other parts of the country—no lava flows or spewing volcanoes here. With mountains scoured by glaciers, in some ways I was reminded of the ancient tabletop mesas that line the North Shore of Lake Superior in Thunder Bay. When I arrived in Iceland, I made it my mission to establish some way of engaging with the land. Supplementing my diet with wild foods, I knew, would offer that connection. Foraging sustainably allows you to slow down and interact with your surroundings; to notice the subtleties of seasonal influences on the freshness and quality of herbs, berries and mushrooms; to heighten your senses to a level so acute, finding wild foods becomes intuitive. I wasn’t sure what we would find in our two weeks of cycling through subarctic tundra. As we rode along the channels of narrow fjords, we stopped in small fishing villages to camp for the night, stock up on provisions and strike up conversation with some of the locals. As it turns out, it was high season for some of Iceland’s most popular wild foods.

Berries Berry picking is a favorite pastime of Icelandic people. Much of the landscape is scrubby, boggy and treeless in the Westfjords—perfect berry habitat! We learned from one Icelandic man that we were coming up on berry season, which begins in August and runs through mid-September. 30

A collection of wild berries with mushrooms in the background. | JULIA PRINSELAAR Then I saw people roaming a south-facing hillside with baskets in hand. I stopped and examined the shrubs, which were laden with berries that looked similar to blueberries but were actually bilberries, of which there are generally two types that grow in Iceland. The popular bilberry or ‘aðalbláber’ (Vaccinium myrtillus) is often confused with the blueberries that are native to North America and the ones we pick in northern Ontario. Although the bilberry is slightly less sweet than its bog bilberry counterpart, it is widely harvested and both are used to make jams and to garnish traditional Icelandic Skyr and other desserts.

Crowberries (Empetrum nigrum) were even more abundant than bilberries in the Westfjords, carpeting the landscape in low-growing evergreen shrubs. The tiny black berries are used to make Iceland’s only native wine, ‘Kvöldsól’ which translates to ‘Midnight Sun’, acclaimed for its rich taste and high anti-oxidant properties.

Mushrooms Mid-August was a fruitful time for mushroom picking in the Westfjords. The most common varieties we found were boletes, which lack gills. Instead their caps have a spongy underside with tiny holes called polypores. Birch boletes are common in Iceland, as are the prized King Boletes, also known as Ceps or Porcinis.

Seaweed Finally, the opportunity to find seaweed in abundance! As someone who lives along a freshwater coastline, foraging for edible seaweed has been on my bucket list for a long time. The savory umami flavor makes a nutritious addition to soups and fermented foods like kimchi. As luck would have it, I met a friendly barista at a local café in Isafjordur who told me all about Norwegian Sea Truffle, a seaweed that grows in abundance in the intertidal zone. Norwegian Sea Truffle is an epiphyte, meaning it grows on the surface of a host plant and collects nutrients from its surroundings. She told me that rockweed grows abundantly in the surrounding fjord, and where I find rockweed, I will find Norwegian Sea Truffle. Pungent and fragrant, we mixed this seaweed into our pasta sauce for dinner. Paired with wild mushrooms, it provided a next-level back country meal.

Fermented shark I wouldn’t leave Iceland without sampling some of the country’s traditional seafoods. With mashed pollock (Plokkfiskur), herring and smoked fish already on my plate, I

Money Exchange Norwegian Sea Truffle growing on rockweed outside of Isafjordur, Iceland. | JULIA PRINSELAAR couldn’t resist a tasting of fermented shark. Possibly the most famous dish in Iceland, hákarl is more of a modern-day curiosity that was once traditionally prepared by burying shark meat below ground. The ammonia-rich flesh is very flavor-forward, but if you’re looking for an unforgettable culinary experience, try the hákarl.

As dawn prepares to break on November 1, Venus and a bright round moon face each other across an expanse of sky sparkling with the stars of the winter constellations. Venus holds its ground as the moon works its way eastward toward the shimmering planet. As it goes, the moon wanes to a thin crescent that hangs above Venus on the 12th. On the 13th, the moon and Venus form a triangle with Spica, Virgo’s brightest star. With sharp eyes, you may see Mercury very low beneath the moon that morning. Spica also begins the month below Venus, but glides past the planet between the 17th and 19th. By month’s end, Spica and Venus will be far apart and Arcturus, the brightest star in Bootes, the herdsman, will shine high to the left of Venus.

Meanwhile, the winter constellations are making their grand entrance into the evening sky. They appear one by one, earlier every night. When the hourglass form of Orion, the hunter, climbs over the eastern horizon, you’ll know that Sirius,

the night sky’s brightest star, won’t be far behind. Mars, still fairly bright, is well up in the east to southeast at nightfall. Over the night of the 25th-26th, a bright gibbous moon rises and sets with the red planet. Brilliant Jupiter and dimmer Saturn come out in the south to southwest. Watch as they drift farther westward, drawing closer to each other all the while. Both are moving eastward against the background of stars, but Jupiter moves faster and gains steadily on the ringed planet. Go out close to nightfall on the 18th and 19th to see a crescent moon shining near them. In December, Jupiter sweeps by Saturn in a very close encounter. November’s full moon rises the evening of the 29th, reaching perfect fullness at 3:30 a.m. on the 30th. The University of Minnesota’s public viewings of the night sky at its Duluth and Twin Cities campuses have been curtailed due to the pandemic. Bimaadiziiwin (Living a Good Life) By Sam Zimmerman With November being recognized as Native American History month, I wanted to share a piece that reflects my own family’s history. My uncle recently shared with me and my cousins of how when he was a baby in the early 1940s, nookomis (my Grandmother) would put him in a hammock to nap while my Grandfather worked on Mt. Maude in Gichi-onigamiing (Grand Portage). So, when I stand along the North Shores of Gitchi Gami (Lake Superior), I always think of the Ojibwe families who once lived along the same shores; raising children, gathering, hunting, passing down the traditions and the wisdom of the elders shared. This piece, titled Bimaadiziiwin (Living a Good Life) is meant to

honor all of these families and my own. The mother sharing her love with her son after a day of gathering miinan (blueberries). She has placed a dream catcher above him in the giizhik (cedar tree) to ensure good dreams while her own mother, his Grandmother, tends to the fire. The figures are placed along the four hills of life with the Grandmother sitting in front of the last hill/season of life. The phases of the moon depict the passage of time along one’s life and the lives of this family. The child’s tiginaagan (cradleboard) is adorned with the medicine wheel and 14 flowers to honor the total number of grandchildren that followed after my grandparents placed their first child in a hammock to sleep on Mt. Maude.

In Wolf Island, David Mech, author, professor and senior research scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey, recounts three extraordinary summers and winters spent on the isolated outpost of Isle Royale National Park in the late 1950s, tracking and observing wolves and moose on foot and by airplane—upending the common misperception of wolves as destructive killers of insatiable appetite. Written with science and outdoor writer Greg Breining, who recorded hours of interviews with Mech and had access to his journals and field notes, the book also includes photos from their time on the island. It takes us back to the beginning of a classic environmental study that continues today, spanning nearly 60 years—research and experiences that would transform one of the most despised creatures on Earth into an icon of wilderness and ecological health. Strange Tales Lighthouse Tales of Lake Superior By Elle AndraWarner

Most of us have read about ships that have floundered in the past during Lake Superior storms in November and December. Seldom however are there mentions about the dangers faced by lighthouse keepers in the pre-helicopter days when they had to return in rough waters to the mainland at the end of navigation season. Some lost their lives braving the elements, like keeper William Sherlock from Michipicoten Island’s East Lighthouse, and even the few who overwintered at their remote island stations had some challenging experiences.

Built in 1905, the tug James Whalen transported lighthouse keepers, their families and supplies to and from their lighthouse stations until the early 1960s when the Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker/tender Alexander Henry took over. | AUTHOR’S COLLECTION

One of those overwintering stories involved the sons of the first keeper of Slate Island Lighthouse, built in 1903 on Patterson Island, one of the Slate Islands archipelago in north Lake Superior, south of the town of Terrace Bay. Perched on a cliff, the lighthouse rises 224 feet above the lake, making it the most elevated lighthouse on the Great Lakes. (In July 2011, a 51-foot replica of the lighthouse was built in the town of Terrace Bay.) Slates’ first keeper was Peter King (served 1903-1913) and he lived on the island with his wife and three sons. At the time, keepers had to find their own transport on Lake Superior back to the mainland after the close of shipping season. Overwintering one year, the Kings planned to restock their winter supplies by walking 13 miles (21 km) on the frozen lake to Jackfish village (abandoned, now a ghost town). As the story goes, one year there was still open water when two of the sons rowed out for supplies, and on their way back, stayed the night on a small nearby island. The next morning, it was a shock to find the lake waters had frozen. To get back to the lighthouse, one chopped ice while the other rowed. Another time the brothers by luck missed a potential tragedy while walking home on the frozen ice from Jackfish and noticed ‘stars’ appearing in the ice where they had just stepped—that next morning, the ice had disappeared and it was all open water. The ‘stars’ had been the ice cracking underneath their feet. By the time that John “Jack” Bryson (served 30 years from 1948-1978) was the keeper at Slate Island Lighthouse, the Canadian government was supplying boat transportation for the keepers to and from the lighthouses—but that could still present problems. In mid-December in the early 1950s, the Bryson family had a harrowing experience returning to Port Arthur (now part of Thunder Bay). After the tug James Whalen picked them up at the end of ship-

the head keeper and his three assistants at Rock of Ages Lighthouse (about 3.5 miles west of Isle Royale). With no pickup and short of food, fuel and tobacco for over a week, the four men abandoned their lighthouse and took their chances in an open boat to Pigeon Point.

Rock of Ages Lighthouse, located approximately 3.5 miles (5.6 km) off the west end of Isle Royale in Lake Superior, was constructed and lighted in 1908. In August 1983, it was named in the National Register of Historic Places. Since 2014, the Rock of Ages Lighthouse Preservation Society has been restoring the lighthouse. | ED LEE ping season, the lake became so stormy and dangerous that the tug was forced to stop at Trowbridge Island for two days before it was safe to continue. And then when they finally arrived in Port Arthur, the ice on the tug was so thick that it had to be chopped off the cabin door before the Brysons could exit. By the way, at the Slate Island Lighthouse, it’s reputed that the ghost of its former keeper Charles D. Lockwood (served from 1918-1928) walks around the old keeper’s house. As the story goes, he died while at the lighthouse and his wife kept his body on ice in a shed until fall when he could be transported back to the mainland for burial. Coincidentally (or not), the story is eerily similar to the well-known tale

about the death of keeper Thomas Lampier at St. Ignace Lighthouse (“Lighthouse of Doom”) on Lake Superior’s Talbot Island. But there’s an additional strange mysterious twist to the Lockwood ghost story. A registered death certificate in Port Arthur by Dr. Dunn has been found, listing retired lighthouse keeper Charles Douglas Lockwood as a bachelor, dying of illness on September 21, 1932 at his home on 229 Manitou Street in Port Arthur, and buried at Riverside Cemetery. Seems he didn’t die on the island. Strange indeed.

“We just decided to get out while the getting was good,” assistant keeper Robert Morrill said in a newspaper article in the The Evening Star, Washington, DC (December 21). “The tender was due December 12 when we were to stop our light and go home for the winter. We ran the light and fog horn until noon of the 17th, when we left a note on the door and took to the launch.” Later to get assistance, the assistant keeper Robert Morrill braved alone the ice-jammed Lake Superior in a borrowed fisherman’s skiff to Hat Point, hiked miles through waist-deep snow to Mineral Center where he hitched a ride to Duluth, and arrived on December 20. The other three men were later rescued from Pigeon Point by the fishing steamer Winyah (the former luxury yacht Dungeness owned by the Carnegies). Editor’s Note: Elle Andra-Warner’s new book “Lighthouses of Lake Superior’s North Shore, the Historic Beacons of Minnesota, Isle Royale, and Ontario” is available from booksellers or at northernwilds.com

So, what happened if at the closing of navigation season, the government transport boat failed to pick up the keepers at their island stations? Well, in December 1926 that’s exactly the dilemma faced by NORTHERN  WILDS

CATCHLIGHT

canada jay On a winter trip to the North Shore, I saw this Canada jay (formerly called gray jay) along the Lima Mountain Road. It was curious to see what I was doing. As a result, I was able to get a nice photo of it. There is currently an effort to make the Canada jay the official bird of Canada—seems like a good idea to me.—Earl Orf NORTHERN  WILDS
