Under smoky skies, the border opening is in sight A few days before we completed production of this issue, Canada announced that fully vaccinated travelers will be able to enter the country beginning August 9. As of this writing, the U.S. hasn’t announced when or how Canadians will be allowed to enter the country. We will share more information on northernwilds.com and our Facebook group Outdoor Adventures on Lake Superior’s North Shore as it becomes available. We do suggest potential border crossers become familiar with the ArrivCan app, which you will be required to use to provide your covid-related health information in order to enter Canada.

Do you have a question for one of our writers? Or an interesting photo, recipe, or story you’d like to share with Northern Wilds? Please send it to storyideas@northernwilds.com.

Hopefully, we’ll have received at least a couple of inches of rain by the time you read this, because the Northern Wilds is suffering from severe drought. An absence of blueberries and other wild foods will lead to difficult foraging conditions for black bears and other creatures. Bone-dry creeks and high water temperatures will tax trout and other fish dependent on cold water. Everyone living here is on edge about the growing risk of wildfire. We’ve endured many days where smoke from distant wildfires creates an acrid haze.

everyone is out and about participating in activities that were put on hold for the pandemic. We have a full-page calendar of upcoming events and three pages of event announcements—the most since the pandemic began. The Grand Marais Fisherman’s Picnic is back, although it will remain somewhat unusual due to ongoing construction along Highway 61. Still, residents, former residents and lovers of Cook County will be able to meet and catch up with one another as they have for 92 years. We think you’ll enjoy this issue, where we’ve paid special attention to Lake Superior with stories about ship-watching, sailing, photographing waves, shore-casting and more. We’re introducing a new dining columnist, Kitty Mayo of Two Harbors, with a tip-of-the-hat to outgoing Chuck Viren for his excellent work on the food beat. We also have an inspiring story about a new program to bring young people from the Pine Ridge Lakota Reservation in South Dakota to work seasonal jobs along the Gunflint Trail and in Grand Marais. We even have the first winner in our new Trophy Trash section! So, turn the page. You’ll find a lot of fun inside.—Shawn Perich and Amber Pratt

Celebrating 125 years of the Edna G TWO HARBORS— In 1896 in Cleveland, Ohio, a tug boat was being built for the Duluth & Iron Range Railway. Now, 125 years later, that tug, the Edna G, is one of the most iconic and beloved tug boats of Lake Superior. From towing ore carriers in and out of the harbor to being used for tours—and now undergoing a restoration project—this summer marks a celebration of her past and future on the waters of the Big Lake. The all-steel Edna G was built to assist ore carriers into and out of Agate Bay in Two Harbors, a job she held until her last tow in December of 1981. Named for Edna Greatsinger, the daughter of the Duluth & Iron Range Railway’s president, the all-steel Edna G not only towed ships but also assisted in icebreaking and helped rescue ships from storms. Like many of her time, she was called to service in World War I, and spent two years on the East Coast hauling coal barges. Apart from those two years, however, the Edna G has remained in Two Harbors, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. She officially retired from service in 1981 and was open for tours to the public until 2015, when needed maintenance brought tours to an end. Concerns began to grow about the structural integrity of the tug, including corrosion to the steel hull. Kathy Glenn is the chairperson of Friends of the Edna G, a nonprofit organization that was formed to preserve and promote the Edna G for future generations. “The Friends of the Edna G started in 2018 as a response to a letter in the local paper about the poor condition that the tug was in,” Kathy Glenn said. “A group of us held a meeting in the library to discuss what to do about it. The outcome of the meeting was the formation of the 501(c)(3) nonprofit group. Since then, we have worked at promoting the tug and informing people about her condition and history.”

A celebration for the 125th anniversary of the Edna G will be held in Two Harbors August 28-29. There will be artists, crafters, live music, contests, activities for the kids, and tours. | BECKY NORLIEN

When the organization was formed, it was initially thought that the Edna G was in much worse condition than it was. The Friends of the Edna G had a marine surveyor do an inspection, and the inspection showed that, while there was certainly work to be done, she was not at imminent risk of sinking as had originally been feared. “We are limited on what we can do physically to the tug since we don’t own it,” Glenn said. “The Edna G is owned by the City of Two Harbors. We have a contract in the summer with the city to give tours of the tug. We do decorate her for Christmas every year and do some cleaning and general light maintenance.” In addition to the Friends of the Edna G, the Edna G Commission, appointed by the city council, also assists in maintenance and needed work for the tug. Glenn said that the Commission is having electrical work done, and is getting the wood around the pilot house repaired. The Friends of the Edna G hopes to get more involved in her restoration, including having an inspection done by an expert in historical boats who can assess the Edna G with new eyes and give recommendations for next steps.

[LEFT] The Edna G in 1923. | SUBMITTED [RIGHT] The Edna G won the bicentennial 1976 tug boat race, competing against a diesel-powered Coast Cutter and

another diesel-powered tug. |SUBMITTED With the dedication of community members, the future of the Edna G is looking upward, and a celebration for the tug’s 125th anniversary will be held in Two Harbors August 28-29. “The reason for the Edna G 125th Anniversary Celebration is the tug is an icon of the city of Two Harbors. Her work bringing the ore boats into the harbor was partly responsible for the city’s financial growth. We like to say that it’s ‘the tug that helped build

America’ since about half of Minnesota’s iron ore in the late 1800s and first half of the 20th century was shipped out of Two Harbors to the steel mills out east. Almost anything made of steel was made in America during that time period,” Glenn said. The 125th anniversary celebration will feature artists, crafters, information about the Edna G’s history, and tours. The event will also have an art contest and a writing contest, with both contests open to all age

groups. There will also be music from local bands, including the Northwoods Band, the Fish Heads, Steve Solkla, THUGs, Eddie Ojard, and D.J. Bill Rabold. Those interested in learning more about Friends of the Edna G can visit their Facebook page or their website: friendsofednag. org.—Rae Poynter

Iconic Silver Islet General Store and Tea Room is re-opening SILVER ISLET— Good news for history buffs, boaters, paddlers, summer community and destination travellers; after being closed for six years, the famous 150-yearold Silver Islet General Store and Tea Room—located about an hour’s drive east of Thunder Bay—is re-opening with new owners Jeff and Sandy (Saxberg) Korkola.

Sandy and Jeff Korkola are the new owners of the Silver Islet Store. | SUBMITTED

They’ll be carrying on the Saxberg family legacy that began in 1985 when the family purchased the historic but dormant store, renovated it and re-opened three years later, developing

it into a popular gathering place for residents, campers, boaters, paddlers and tourists from all over the world. In 2015, the store closed due to family health reasons. But this summer, the iconic landmark store—which first opened in 1871—is ready to welcome everyone again. Silver Islet is situated at the end of Sibley Peninsula, adjacent to Sleeping Giant Provincial Park. Silver was discovered here in 1868 and in 1870, the Silver Islet Mine became operational on a 90-square-foot rock island, three-quarters of a mile off-

the original colours of the store back in 1871. Back in 1999, the Saxberg family added to the first floor the President Sibley’s Billiard Room with the Brunswick pool table originally housed in the President’s mansion. Visitors will be pleased to know the famous 153-yearold pool table is out of storage and featured again on the first floor. Built in 1868, the Brunswick Balke Collender “Saratoga” model features 1.5-inch Vermont slate, golden oak body, ivory diamonds and rosewood rails. A bonus for boaters and paddlers is that directly behind the General Store is the Silver Islet government dock for small craft. Closed in 2013, the dock has been rehabilitated, upgraded and re-opened to the public in 2020.

Visitors will once again be able to enjoy a cinnamon bun in the renovated Tea Room. | SUBMITTED

shore in Lake Superior. For 14 years, it was the world’s richest silver mine (1870-1884). At the height of its operations, the mining town site had more than 600 residents with 80 houses stretched over a mile along the shore.

ESCAPE TO THE GUNFLINT TRAIL

The mine was built and developed largely by Americans. Major Alexander H. Sibley, president of the Silver Islet Mining Company from 1870 until his death in 1878, was the son of Detroit’s first mayor and the brother of the first governor of Minnesota. Major Sibley lived in Detroit and came to Silver Islet for the summer with his family and their servants, living in a three-storey mansion which became known as the “White House.” Today’s newly-renovated Silver Islet General Store still carries staple groceries, works by local artisans, souvenirs and other items. Their popular Tea Room will again be offering light lunches and homemade baked goods like pies and delicious signature cinnamon buns (people travelled from all over just to buy them). A new addition is the take-out window for things like ice cream bars and cappuccino. Visitors will find a spruced-up look at the iconic store. Besides the snazzy new windows, the Korkolas have installed a new metal roof with skylights and an off-grid solar power system. Dogs in the BWCAW BOUNDARY WATERS— I was sitting on the rock shelf by the shore enjoying the end of another day in the BWCAW, when I glanced to my left. My yellow Lab Rose was sitting quietly. She had joined me to watch the sunset.

risk of capsizing with a dog in the canoe so whenever possible I paddle near the shore, especially on solo trips. A good idea anyway as it is not only safer; there is more to see.

I had just retired after 28 years on the job and Rose and I headed to the border for six days, to relax, reflect and hopefully catch a few brook trout. Many of my co-workers had written notes for me to read around the fire. Most evenings I would pour a camp cup of Red Breast Irish Whiskey and read a few of their messages. All were heartfelt and a few brought tears. Several were quite clever. One was written on birch bark to use to start a fire, another on toilet paper.

Bring extra in case you are wind bound. Pack the food in several different bags. Not that your well-trained pet would ever snuffle into your pack, but your camp mouse or chipmunk would love to. Follow the Forest Service rules, pick up after your dog and always leave your campsite better than you found it.

One night Rose and I stayed up late listening to the wolves howling across the lake. Another night we crawled into the tent at 7 p.m. with a pot of mac and cheese just before an all-night thunderstorm rolled down the lake. We did not emerge until seven the next morning when we were greeted by a crystal blue sky. Most days we would hike into my favorite brook trout lake to catch our dinner. I would toss out a bobber and watch her chase frogs along the shore. During our mid-September adventure Rose was the perfect companion. She never complained, didn’t talk much and always cleaned her plate. After 30 plus canoe trips with Rose, I would like to share a few tips for others who would like to bring their best friend to the BWCAW. First, if you are unable to control your dog, please do not bring it to the BWCAW. If your dog can’t be off leash at home, leave it at home. Other campers want to hear loons call, not dogs bark. And they certainly don’t need a strange dog yipping at their heels on a portage with a canoe and a Duluth Pack on their shoulders.

SAFETY

I always have my dog sit in front of me in the stern of the canoe and always wearing a collar so I can control her with my hand. Never tie your dog to the canoe. I load my canoe first and have the dog jump in just before I leave a landing. There is more of a

FOOD

FISHING

Dogs, hooks and a flopping walleye in a canoe is a bad combination. Try to find a campsite where you can fish from shore. Depending on the time of year there always seems to be a walleye, northern or smallmouth that would like to join you and your dog for dinner.

BEARS

I have never had a bear in camp when I have had a dog with me, but I still take the same bear precautions. I do try to pick a campsite on an island, not that it would deter a hungry bear, but it does give a sense of comfort that your pup has less room to wander off.

WOLVES

I personally have not seen a wolf on a summer trip but judging from stories there is a concern. If a wolf will attack a dog in Grand Marais, why not on Saganaga Lake? Here again, the dog needs to stay near you and your campsite. Twice in the last few years during winter trips I have spotted a wolf. Rose pulls the sled, so I am sure they were following her trail down the lake. Both slowly veered off when they were about 300 yards away. I was six years old when I first headed up the Gunflint Trail. Sixty years later I have not lost the same sense of awe and wonder I felt then for this magical place. I can only imagine the BWCAW though Rose’s eyes.—Dan Russell

Getting a handle on Lake Superior fish diets ST. PAUL—The Minnesota DNR Lake Superior Area Fisheries crew has teamed up with other agencies and anglers to better understand the feeding ecology of Lake Superior fish—basically, what eats what, when and where. Healthy food webs are important to ecosystem health. Lake Superior natural resources agencies that are members of the Lake Superior Technical Committee of the Great Lakes Fishery Commission also serve as the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement’s Lakewide Action and Management Plan Aquatic Community Committee. State and tribal partners have been conducting long term monitoring programs on fish populations to support progressive fisheries, ecosystem and lake-wide management. A key component is monitoring ecosystem health through the analysis of fish diets. Fish diet data provides managers an understanding of the status of prey resources for fish production and sustainability. Predator and prey abundance is routinely measured through natural resource agency surveys in Lake Superior and diet data provide the mechanism to link the trophic levels and determine whether there are limitations in prey resources. However, diet data are not collected comprehensively by agencies because of funding limitations to analyze the samples. The Cooperative Science and Monitoring Initiative provides an opportunity for agencies to coordinate surveys and research through collaboration and provide a comprehensive status of the lake ecosystem. In order to effectively manage fisheries and the ecosystem, mapping trophic transfer through the ecosystem can help identify bottlenecks that can limit production, sustainability and the health of the system. Knowing the status of the food web will aid natural resource agencies with the management of the fisheries by providing information on potential limitations or enhancements to production, particularly as it relates to the ongoing maintenance of a rehabilitated lake trout population.

Project staff around Lake Superior collect stomachs and muscle plugs from all fish species collected in standardized surveys. In addition to these samples, the DNR also recruited more than 60 volunteer anglers to provide carcasses (all but the fillets) from fish they catch in the sport fishery. So far, anglers have provided more than 1,050 samples from 11 different species of fish: brown trout, Chinook (king) salmon, Coho (silver) salmon, lake trout (lean and siscowet), northern pike, pink salmon, rainbow trout (clipped Kamloops), splake (stocked brook trout-lake trout hybrid), lake herring (cisco) and walleye. The project will continue through the winter of 2021-2022. Contact Nick Peterson, DNR fisheries specialist, at nick.peterson@ state.mn.us for more information and to get involved.

$1.6 million available in local grants for emerald ash borer management ST. PAUL—The Minnesota DNR encourages local governments and Tribal nations to apply for grants to help manage and reduce the impacts of emerald ash borer (EAB). The preparing for EAB grants program application period is open through Monday, Aug. 9. Tribal nations and all local units of government in Minnesota, including cities, counties, regional authorities, joint powers boards, towns, and parks and recreation boards in cities of the first class (more than 100,000 residents) are eligible to apply. With $1.6 million in total funding available, applicants can request a maximum of $100,000 (there is no minimum). Applicants must also include a 25 percent match of the total project funds. Emma Schultz, DNR community forest project specialist, said EAB is a statewide

Priority will be given to projects that manage ash for EAB, including those that address significant public safety concerns stemming from dead and dying ash trees and those that benefit

underserved populations and areas of concern for environmental justice.

When water levels are low, boaters are more likely to back their trailer past the ramp’s end into a prop-wash hole. | KRISTAL LOWRIE

Low water, tough launch ST. PAUL—The abnormally dry to drought conditions occurring across Minnesota are creating challenging conditions for people trying to get their boats into or out of the water at public boat launches, according to the Minnesota DNR. When water levels drop during extended dry periods, the concrete ramps at boat launches may no longer reach all the way into the water and hazards such as propwash holes can become more problematic. Prop-wash holes are caused by “power-loading” the boat onto the trailer instead of using the preferred method of cranking it on the trailer by winch. When water levels are low, people are more likely to back their trailer past the ramp’s end and into a propwash hole if one is present. “It can be pretty difficult to get a trailer unstuck from a hole like that,” said Nancy Stewart, DNR water recreation consultant. “And just beyond the prop-wash hole, there’s often a mound of material that boats

may get stuck on after launching, preventing them from getting to deeper water.” Extending ramps can help in some places, but not when shallow water persists beyond the boat ramp. Stewart offers the following tips for launching boats in low water conditions: • Check the ramp, especially the firmness of the gravel at the ramp’s end, and the water depth. • Visit an alternative access site, or a different lake or river altogether, if water levels are too low to safely launch your boat. • Watch for obstructions in the lake, like large boulders or tree stumps. • Expect delays at public boat launches and be patient with boaters who are having difficulty launching. You can also #BeGoodNatured and offer assistance. • Visit the DNR website for boat launching maps and information on power loading.

An urban boreal treasure to explore THUNDER BAY— Have you ever driven by an interesting public green space and thought to yourself, “I should stop and have a look at that someday?” I’ve had that thought many times over the years as I drove past a small park-like area on Central Avenue in Thunder Bay. That is until recently when I stopped, parked and took time to wander. The urban park setting is the Central Natural Environment Gardens, open to the public and managed by EcoSuperior volunteers. Even though there’s a busy road beside it, the Gardens offer a peaceful retreat with the trees, shrubs and plants. There’s even a sheltered picnic table area and benches. The Gardens were developed on the empty road base left behind when Central Avenue was re-routed in the early 1990s. Twenty-six years ago in 1995, EcoSuperior (formerly Thunder Bay 2002 Clean & Green) partnered with City of Thunder Bay to make the space into a biodiverse garden space. Credit for the original garden design goes to Janet Rice-Bredin of Morning Glory Designs. Their mission is “To build a healthy future for people and the planet.” The Gardens’ purpose was to be a demonstration garden where visitors can learn about native plant species and organic gar-

Fond du Lac Band proposes returning elk to Northeast MN

Gunflint Pines Cabins & Camping Boat /Canoe/Kayak/ Fishing Pole Rentals Gift Shop & Grocery Pizza & Ice Cream Open to the Public

DULUTH—The Fond du Lac Band recently submitted a proposal to the Minnesota DNR to expand the state’s elk numbers and range by moving 100-150 elk from existing herds in northwest Minnesota to the area of the Fond du Lac Reservation and Fond du Lac State Forest in Carlton and southern St. Louis counties. Elk are native to Minnesota with historic numbers once estimated in the thousands and whose range encompassed most of the state. Known as omashkooz by the Ojibwe, they were important to the diet and culture of Native Americans. Today, Minnesota’s remaining elk are confined to two small herds in the far northwest comer of the state where one of the primary uses of land is agriculture. As part of an effort to balance wildlife conservation with agricultural production needs, elk numbers are held in check through regular hunting seasons. In 2014, the Band initiated an effort to explore the feasibility of restoring elk to three different areas in or near their historic range in northeast Minnesota. The Band partnered with the University of Minnesota and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. In 2016 the University received a grant from Minnesota’s Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund to research levels of public support and potential suitable habitat for elk in northeast Minnesota. The University completed these feasibility studies in August, 2019, and results indicated strong support for elk amongst landowners and the general public. The studies also analyzed habitat suitable for carrying approximately one elk/ square mile, which indicates the proposed restoration area has a biological carrying capacity of approximately 287 elk. “The Band’s Reservation Business Committee believes restoring a wild elk population to areas where band members retain their historic treaty rights is in the Band’s best interest,” says Fond du Lac Tribal Chairman Kevin Dupuis Sr. “Elk have historically been, and continue to be, an intrinsic part of our culture and traditions.” The majority of land in the proposed restoration area is forested and in state, county or tribal ownership. Large farms and row crops like com and soybeans don’t dominate the landscape as they do in northwest Minnesota. Elk are proposed to be moved over a period of three to five years as their numbers exceed established population goals in

The Band proposes any elk moved should first be required to undergo appropriate health screenings, and then monitored post-release to evaluate the effort in order to assess elk movements, mortality and any areas of conflict. To be successful this project will require support and collaboration with the Minnesota DNR and other public and private partners. Before moving forward, a period of inter-agency planning as well as public review and input should follow to refine this proposal, develop capture and handling protocols, and write post release state and tribal elk management plans. The Band proposes initial planning efforts with the Minnesota DNR begin this year with a goal of moving the first elk in 2025. The Band’s long-term objectives for elk restoration include: allowing elk to once again play a role in the diet and culture of the region’s native peoples, restoring an elk population, providing recreational opportunities through elk viewing, boosting local economies in an area of the state primed for ecotourism, providing future hunting opportunities for tribal and nontribal members,

Points North From Pine Ridge to the Gunflint Trail By Shawn Perich

What’s happening this summer actually began on a cold winter night several years ago. Sitting in her warm home, Sarah Hamilton, owner of Trail Center Lodge on the Gunflint Trail, received an email from Bob Deschampe, then Cook County commissioner and now tribal chair of the Grand Portage Ojibwe, with a link to a HuffPost story about a firewood shortage on the Pine Ridge Lakota Reservation in western South Dakota, where many homes are heated with wood. Hamilton decided to do what she could to help bring firewood to Pine Ridge. She contacted One Spirit, a charitable organization working with the Lakota that was mentioned in the news story, and began raising money to help them obtain firewood and distribute it across the reservation. In doing so, she became friends with Jeri Baker, the executive director of One Spirit. A frequent conversation topic with the two women was economic development on the reservation. With unemployment hovering at 80 percent on Pine Ridge and a constant shortage of seasonal employees on the North Shore, Hamilton thought she could help.

Standing on the deck at Trail Center are Donovan [WITH PADDLE], Zach and Maya. | SUBMITTED “It’s a big step to go away from home,” Hamilton said. “They are so family-oriented that it’s actually very hard on them. One young man went home, because it was just too hard for him.”

“The chronic shortage of seasonal employees on the North Shore is not new,” she said. “Many employers hire J1 foreign workers, which can be a hassle, an expense and difficult because of Covid. Why not hire American kids instead?” Hamilton hired two young men from Pine Ridge to work at Trail Center. As word of the employment opportunity on the Gunflint Trail got around on reservation, she began hearing from other young people who were looking for work and an adventure away from home. She and Baker began developing an employment program. Hamilton found other Cook County employers who were willing to hire the Lakotas. She and Baker worked out the logistics of transportation so the young people are driven to the Rapid City airport and picked up by someone at the Duluth airport when they arrive. Baker’s grandson, Quentin Badie, built a website for One Spirit where employers could advertise jobs with specific information about duties, wages and housing. While some young people on Pine Ridge wanted to head north for work, their parents and grandparents needed assurance 18

Hamilton and Baker had high hopes of bringing 20 or more workers to the North Shore this year, but just six arrived. They discovered this was a blessing in disguise, because they’ve been able to work out some of the kinks in the program. “What we’ve learned this year will help us be more organized in the future,” Hamilton said. “We’ll start offering the jobs earlier and move the young people here in groups, so employers know when they are coming.”

the jobs were on the up and up. One Spirit brought several of them to the North Shore to see the place and meet Hamilton. All were impressed with the employment opportunities and graciousness of the community.

Hamilton had two young people from Pine Ridge working at Trail Center the first two years. While they required some support to deal with homesickness and adapting to a culture very different from their own, she discovered they were eager to learn and willing to work.

NORTHERN  WILDS

She’s also going to limit the job opportunities to a closer radius to Trail Center, essentially the Gunflint Trail and Grand Marais. This makes it easier for her to provide support to the young people when they need it. They also remain in close contact with family members and others on Pine Ridge. Hamilton will also get support she needs from individuals and various community entities. Badie, Baker’s grandson, has been working summers at Trail Center and provides companionship and support to the young people. The county government,

basic needs on the reservation such as food and heat, the nonprofit works in partnership with the Lakota. They provide and distribute food and firewood. The organization built the first meat-processing facility on reservation to process locally produced bison, wild game and cattle. They also built a youth center in an area of the reservation that is statistically considered the most impoverished community in the U.S. The employment program builds upon One Spirit’s previous work.

Hamilton is excited the young people are learning skills they can bring home to Pine Ridge.

“One of the absolutely important things we can do is provide employment training,” Baker said. “The young people have an opportunity to experience life away from the reservation, do something for themselves and bring skills back to use on the reservation for their people. They learn to trust others and know what it is like to be treated with respect by people who are not Native Americans.”

“The YMCA and the Grand Marais Public Library are on board and we are utilizing both,” she said. “One young man is going to take classes at the Grand Marais Art Colony.” Hamilton is excited the young people are learning skills they can bring home to Pine Ridge. She thinks it is unlikely any will decide to move to the North Shore on a permanent basis, due to the strength of the Lakota culture. She is determined to provide them with opportunities that will give them good memories along with new working skills to take forward in life. One young man wants to learn how to cook professionally, while another is an artist and may want to become a tattoo artist. What they need to make their dreams become reality is mentoring. Hamilton contacted Minneapolis restaurateur Sean Sherman, aka the Sioux Chef, and asked if he would be willing to take on the two young men over the winter and provide mentoring for them. Sherman, who is from Pine Ridge, readily agreed to do so and offered to help them with hous-

she has met and worked with.

“It’s unbelievable,” Hamilton said. “There couldn’t be a better next step for these two young men.”

“They are beautiful, soft-spoken, loving people,” she said. “I’ve had grandpas and grandmas call me just to make sure the kids are ok and safe.”

While taking on the Pine Ridge employment program has presented plenty of challenges for the already busy Hamilton, such moments are her reward. She’s also been touched by the people of Pine Ridge that

“I must say thank you to Sarah and everyone who was open to doing this,” Baker said. “It’s quite a thing the way the whole community has greeted these young people with warmth. There is a tremendous potential for this program to have a great impact on the reservation.”

Baker said Hamilton’s involvement has allowed One Spirit to expand upon the opportunities it already provides on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Begun in 2005 to meet

The Light Between Waves By Eric Weicht

the ocean, but it is the smaller, more subtle waves that define Dalbec’s work. As one of the preeminent photographers on the North Shore, Dalbec specializes in wave and water photography “in and around the lake.” Dalbec has also recently gotten into drone work, and his collection now includes stunning shots of Lake Superior from above—a perspective that contrasts beautifully with his close-up work on the Lake’s surface.

Titles like these ring-out like lines from a well-written poem. They sound as if they might be inscribed on neat little placards in a modern art gallery beneath some abstract work of art, but what they denominate is much more subtle, much closer to home.

Dalbec finds beauty in the minutiae of the Lake, in Superior’s details. Scrolling through his digital gallery is seeing the Lake through the eyes of someone who knows it intimately. What is most striking about his work is that it’s not the largest, most dramatic waves that stand out and instill a sense of awe, but rather the gentle crests that are so often overlooked.

These are a few of the titles that North Shore photographer Christian Dalbec has given to his photographs, photos that capture the interplay of water and light, a relationship that Dalbec has devoted the past decade of his life to exploring on Lake Superior through the lens of his Nikon. “I grew up along the Lake Superior shoreline,” says Dalbec, who has been living in Two Harbors ever since he was adopted from the Twin Cities as a 6-month-old. “I used to love playing in and around Superior as a kid, especially in the Stewart River area there.” “I think that that’s when I first started appreciating the Lake,” continues Dalbec. “I guess, in a lot of ways that hasn’t changed, 20

Lake Superior’s waves can be as tall as 30 feet, perhaps even larger depending on whether ship captains’ accounts can be believed. Superior’s waves are as magnificent as anything that you would find out on

“I’ve been up here living in Two Harbors basically all of my life,” says Dalbec, “but it wasn’t until 2011 that I got into photography and started getting out on the Lake like I do now.” “A big part of my story,” continues Dalbec, “is that I got into drinking young, and that kind of took over like it does for a lot of people. I was a heavy alcoholic up until

For Dalbec, photography has become the means through which he is able to explore Lake Superior; it has allowed him to see the Lake in a way that he had not been able to before. The titles for the following photos are “Framed in Fall” [TOP LEFT]; “Bottoms Up,” [TOP RIGHT]; “Million Miles,” [BOTTOM LEFT]; and “Man Alive” [BOTTOM RIGHT]. | CHRISTIAN DALBEC PHOTOGRAPHY 2011 when I finally cleaned up, and honestly that’s how I found the camera.” Dalbec was always interested in photography, but had a hard time finding the energy to pursue the craft while working through his addiction. So, when he did manage to “clean up” in 2011, he set to work turning his interest in photography into a passion. “What got me started,” says Dalbec, “was a free workshop that I was able to take part in that John Gregor with ColdSnap Photography put on through the Arrowhead public library system.” “After [the workshop] John and I stayed in touch,” continues Dalbec, “and I continued stopping by his studio in town, bugging him with questions about this and that, and as I developed and improved as a photographer, so too did our relationship. Eventually he became more of a friend than a teacher.” Dalbec was quick to pick up his new craft, and before long he and Gregor were getting out to “shoot” with one another, work together on projects, and co-teach workshops. According to Dalbec, Gregor even started to “look up to” him in some ways, something that Dalbec describes as “an incredible honor.”

Dalbec is a self-described “gear head,” so underwater photography with all of its required, specialized equipment played right into that side of his personality. “It started when I used to play guitar in a rock band,” continues Dalbec. “I used to record with the band and tinker with our sound and what-not. And then for a time I got really into motorcycles... so all of the different gear that I use with my photography plays right into that, especially all of the housings and gear that I need to be in the water.” It takes more than just a waterproof housing and a fancy camera, however, to photograph Lake Superior from within its frigid 39-degree water. It takes nerves. In order to keep from freezing, Dalbec sports a thick neoprene wetsuit while taking photos from within the Lake. He has also found it necessary to wear a helmet to stay protected from Superior’s often rough and unpredictable swells. Dalbec had been living close enough to the Two Harbor ore docks that he could look out of his bedroom window and “watch the boats come in” since 1989. That being said, it wasn’t until he discovered photography that he really started to get out and appreciate the Big Lake.

Photography, for Dalbec, has become the means through which he is able to explore the Lake; it has allowed him to see the Lake in a way that he had not been able to before.

“All of my little spots change throughout the year,” says Dalbec, “because in some ways it’s like I’m chasing the sun as it rises in different places with the changing seasons.”

To get his preferred shots of the Lake, Dalbec wakes up hours before sunrise, sometimes motoring across Lake Superior through the dark on his 16-foot boat to get to where the light will be at its best. At other times he will swim over a mile off shore to catch the sunrise and the waves in just the right spot.

“The fall is so beautiful with the colors and the cliffs,” reflects Dalbec, “but winter has the ice, and there is nothing like seeing the ice on the Lake in winter.”

“I get out most days in the year for sunrise,” says Dalbec, “which in the summer means I’m up by 3 a.m. I mean, sometimes I’ll get the suit on and walk out into the water and decide that the lighting isn’t right or the Lake isn’t what I’m looking for that day, so then I’ll take the camera inland and look elsewhere for my shots.” “Honestly though,” continues Dalbec, “I love getting to know the Lake in this way. I just can’t wait for the next day to see what the sunrise is going to do.”

One of Dalbec’s favorite experiences on Lake Superior is swimming through the caves in the winter. “They’re always so full of icicles that are continually dropping and splashing all around me as I float,” Dalbec explains, “and I love how the caves are both over and under, above the water and below the water. It makes for some great photos.” You can find Dalbec’s work on his website, christiandalbecphotography.com, or by appointment at his studio in Two Harbors.

When asked what his favorite time of year to photograph the Lake is, Dalbec had a hard time making up his mind, describing every sunrise as a unique and wonderful experience. NORTHERN  WILDS

W

hat do windmills, road salt and Italian pasta have in common? In essence, probably not much, except for one leg of their journeys: Lake Superior. When the locks at Sault Ste. Marie opened in 1855, the first load of iron ore was carried by ship on the Columbia from Lake Superior to the steel mills on the lower Great Lakes. While the sight of the Columbia—with its billowing sails and load of ore shoveled by hand—was a far cry from the freighters we know today, that first passage of iron ore through the Soo Locks marked the new beginning of a maritime heritage that has created one of the busiest ports in the U.S., dotted Lake Superior with lighthouses, and each day draws crowds of eager spectators to Duluth’s canal to watch 1,000-footers pass beneath the Aerial Lift Bridge. Those looking to spot a ship along the North Shore will have the most luck the closer they are to Duluth. The Duluth-Superior port is the farthest-inland freshwater port in the U.S., and according to the Duluth Seaway Port Authority, more than 35 million tons of cargo pass through the port each year. The main export from this region of the Northern Wilds is iron ore pellets, or taconite, which are mined in northern Minnesota and brought to the Twin Ports by train. The final destination of iron ore pellets are steel mills in areas like Gary, Indiana and Detroit, Michigan. While the term “ore boat” is colloquially used as a catchall for a freighter spotted on Lake Superior, ships in the region carry more than just taconite. The second largest export from the Twin Ports is coal, sourced from western states like Wyoming and Montana and taken by ship to power plants in the Detroit River region. After coal, the third largest export is grain from Midwestern farms, taken by train to the Twin Ports and loaded onto international vessels. Some of the grain-carrying ships that leave the Duluth-Superior port are bound for destinations in North Africa and Southern Europe, regions that do not have the expansive farmland that is so emblematic of the Midwest. (Much of the pasta from Italy is actually made with grains grown in the Midwest.) Ships on the Great Lakes can be divided into two groups: “lakers” and “salties.” Lake freighters, or “lakers” are ships that travel only among the Great Lakes, while “salties” are ocean-going ships that also enter the Great Lakes by way of the St. Lawrence Seaway. There are currently 13 lake freighters that are 1,000 feet or longer, all of which are U.S. ships. This is because international vessels need to pass through the Welland Canal, the canal that bypasses Niagra Falls and connects Lake Erie to Lake Ontario and the rest of the St. Lawrence Seaway. The maximum length of a vessel that can pass through the Welland Canal locks is 740 feet, thereby limiting the size of international vessels that can reach Lake Superior. Incoming cargoes include limestone, which is used in the production of iron ore

pellets as well as for farming. Some lake freighters also bring in salt from Michigan, which is used for road salt in the winter. International vessels also import wind turbine parts from Europe, which are then used in the wind fields of South Dakota. Sara Summers-Luedtke is the director of the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center in Duluth, which recently reopened to the public after being closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. According to Summers-Luedtke, Duluth provides many prime locations for ship spotting. “The location here drives a lot of tourism, and is the main reason people come to Canal Park,” she said. “Wisconsin Point is also a good place to watch the ships coming through.” Farther up the shore, Two Harbors is the best location to watch ships loading and unloading. The breakwater gives visitors a close-up view of ships entering Agate Bay and the loading docks. Though a less busy stop than Duluth or Two Harbors, freighters also visit Silver Bay, and can be seen from the nearby Silver Bay Marina. For those who are interested in discovering more about what the ships are carrying, or pinning a name to a distant freighter on the horizon, Summers-Leudtke said there are several online resources where people can learn more about the ships. One of these is a website called Marine Traffic, which is a world map showing the real-time location of all vessels. Users of the site can filter the results to only include certain kinds of ships or zoom in on a specific location. Marine Traffic also allows users to search for vessels, so those curious about a particular freighter can search to find its location. Another helpful site is Harborlookout.com, which provides an upcoming schedule of vessels that will be passing through the Duluth-Superior port, as well as information on the cargo that each vessel is carrying. The Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center also provides visitors with a wealth of information about shipping on the Great Lakes. The free museum is located in Canal Park next to the lift bridge, and is free for all visitors. The artifacts in the museum are on loan to the Army Corps of Engineers from the Lake Superior Marine Museum Association, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting, preserving, and educating the public on Lake Superior’s maritime heritage. According to Konnie LeMay, director of the LSMMA, in addition to supporting the museum the organization also supports the Lake Superior Maritime Collection at the University of Wisconsin-Superior, and hosts annual event fundraisers such as the Gales of November, where speakers and authors from across the country come to give talks on maritime-related subjects. The shipping season comes to an end each January when the Soo Locks close for maintenance. For 10 weeks the Duluth canal is quiet, until late March when those first freighters begin to dot the horizon again, ringing in yet another season of shipping on Lake Superior.

she said that in many ways it came naturally for her. Her process has come to involve a combination of outdoor and studio work. Pillsbury typically starts a new project by doing a thumbnail sketch, which helps her zero in on the composition. After that she does a small study, usually 8x10 or 9x12 inches, and then brings those elements into the studio to paint the larger scene. The largest piece she has painted is 30x90 inches, a triptych which is hanging at Lakeview Hospital in Two Harbors.

CREATIVE SPACE: By Rae Poynter Life along the North Shore is never dull. From long, quiet winters to vibrant summers teeming with life, the dramatic contrasts found on this northern shore provide a wealth of inspiration for artists. One such artist is Sandi Pillsbury of Castle Danger, whose paintings capture the majestic beauty of the North Shore found throughout all seasons, from encounters with wildlife and spring flowers to Lake Superior seascapes. Each piece is a snapshot of a life lived in close connection with the Lake and its surrounding areas. Pillsbury’s interest in art began when she was in 4th grade and her parents gave her a paint by number set. She describes being fascinated with how the different colors made the painting look real, and began in her a lifelong love for drawing and painting. She went on to study fashion illustration and design before moving to California and completing her BFA. It was while she was in California that she developed an interest in teaching and started to do postgraduate work at San Jose State. The death of her grandmother brought her back to Minnesota, where she finished her teaching degree through the College of St. Catherine, and it was while Pillsbury was student teaching at the St. Paul Academy that she met the head of the art department, artist Hazel Belvo. “I met Hazel and it was life changing for me,” Pillsbury said. “I jumped in with both feet and started to help her with classes. Over lunch one day she asked, ‘What do you do with your art?’ At the time I wasn’t doing a lot of my own art because I had been teaching, and she suggested that I come up to the Grand Marais Art Colony. That began a 33-year mentorship with Hazel, which was life-changing. I found my voice as an artist, and Hazel’s classes were what honed me as an artist.” Pillsbury taught art for many years in the Anoka-Hennepin School District and later in the Lake Superior School district.

Pillsbury’s paintings capture the ever-changing beauty found throughout the different seasons on the North Shore, from Superior sunrises to evocative clouds to encounters with wildlife right outside her front door. In some of her paintings, Pillsbury paints an underpainting in acrylic, painting areas in the opposite color of what will be painted over it. After the underpainting is done, she uses oil paint over the acrylic and adds in the details to create the finished piece. One example of this technique can be found in her painting of trillium, where beneath the different shades of green are reds and oranges, and the creamy white of the flower petals are underlaid with lavender acrylic.

In some of her paintings, including this one and the one above, Pillsbury paints an underpainting in acrylic, painting areas in the opposite color of what will be painted over it. She then uses oil paint over the acrylic and adds in the details to create the finished piece. | SANDI PILLSBURY She also continued to pursue her own art, taking classes from George Morrison, Elizabeth Erickson, and Mary Pettis. Despite living in the Twin Cities, the pull to Lake Superior and the North Shore remained strong. Pillsbury’s family had a cabin at the Encampment Forest Association, which had been in the family for three generations.

round home in Castle Danger. But after spending just one night in their home, they decided they didn’t want it to merely be a vacation place: they wanted to move there permanently, and would find a way to make it work. Pillsbury then found a teaching position in the area, and her husband was able to move to the area a few years later.

“I would teach during the school year but then I’d spend a lot of the summer up here at the cabin, so I’ve been coming to the Two Harbors area since I was a baby,” she said.

“Lake Superior and its watershed has always been a part of me and my art,” Pillsbury said. “I love living up here, I love the lake and how it’s ever-changing.”

Eventually she and her husband decided to find their own “cabin” on the North Shore, and they ended up finding a year-

In 2004 Pillsbury started participating in the Plein Air event through the Grand Marais Art Colony. At the time, painting outdoors was a fairly new experience, but

Though her work is rooted in Minnesota’s North Shore, Pillsbury’s art has attracted interest from around the country. A videographer from New York discovered her paintings and flew to Minnesota to create a video about her work and the relationship between her art and her surroundings on the North Shore. She then had the opportunity to send some of her paintings to a private showing in New York City. All four of the paintings she sent sold in January 2020. Throughout her career as an artist on the North Shore, Pillsbury has been active in the local arts community. She has been one of the curators for the 20/20 Lake Superior Studio and Art Tour since its inception, and this year will be one of the jurors at Plein Air in Grand Marais. Looking ahead, Pillsbury says that she hopes to teach once again at the Grand Marais Art Colony. “I really love the Grand Marais Art Colony, and I don’t know where I would be as an artist without that experience,” she said. Pillsbury’s work can be found on her Facebook page, or at: sandipillsbury.com.

Growing flax for linen in Grand Marais

Open Fridays & Saturdays • 10am - 5pm

BEHIND THE CRAFT: Christine Novotny In 2020, I grew my first crop of flax up at the Cook County Community Garden in Grand Marais. Flax is the fiber used to make linen yarn. Flax is a bast fiber, which means that its fibers come from the inner bark of the plant. Other bast fibers include ramie, jute, hemp and nettle.

“… a bit off the beaten path and definitely worth the visit!”

Flax is a durable fiber with a natural luster, incredible tensile strength, and is 20 percent stronger when wet. It’s also highly absorbent and dries much faster than cotton, which makes it an excellent next-to-skin fabric. | SUBMITTED

As a weaver, I love working with linen because of its luster, crispness and absorbency. The textiles created with linen will last over a century with proper care. As an environmentalist, I appreciate linen’s low water consumption (almost half the amount of cotton), and its ability to outcompete weeds with its dense seeding, negating the need for harmful herbicides. These qualities inspired me to grow and process flax myself, under the mentorship of experienced growers and flax aficionados. Flax is an annual plant, well-suited for Grand Marais’ short growing season. Last year, I seeded my flax bed at the end of May and harvested it by hand at the beginning of September, which is a typical timeframe for harvest—roughly 100 days. Flax grows well in moderate soil, and its high seeding rate and tall stalks naturally suppresses weeds. Once flax is planted, it needs very little tending or watering. It has beautiful blue flowers that bloom in the morning, follow the sun throughout the day, and drop

their petals in the evening. It’s a gorgeous, lush crop that can grow up to 4 feet tall, with the length of one fiber spanning all the way from the blossom end to the roots. After I pulled the flax from the ground, I had to ret the flax to loosen the fiber from the stem. I chose to dew ret the flax, which means I laid the flax stalks on my lawn and let the morning dew and rain wash over the plant for several weeks. The fibers are attached with pectin, and the retting process literally rots the pectin away so that the fibers can be extracted from the stalk. After the plants are done retting, they are removed from the field and dried until ready to process. I’ve spent the last few months building processing tools for extracting the flax fiber and spinning it into yarn. The flax stalks have to be broken to remove the woody part of the plant and the outer layer, called chive. Then the broken straw is scraped with a wooden knife to remove the chive that still clings to

I’ve been processing my 2020 flax by hand this summer as I watch my 2021 crop grow. Every year I will learn something new that will improve my fibers: the proper time to harvest them, how to know when they are properly retted, techniques for breaking and scutching that will remove the most plant debris but leave the most fiber. I look forward to seeing these little blue flowers bloom year after year, growing closer to the plant and the process of creating our textiles. Through demonstration and education, I hope to instill wonder and curiosity in others to remain connected to the textiles in our lives, and the fibers that create them.

the plant. Finally, the bundle of flax with its fiber exposed, is hackled, which involves combing the flax fiber through a bed of nails that splits the fiber and removes the shorter fiber pieces, called tow. What’s left is beautiful long fibers called line linen. The staple length of the fiber can be anywhere from 2-4 feet long. These long fibers are revered for their strength and shine. Both the line and tow fiber can be spun into yarn for weaving.

Flax is a beautiful, durable fiber. It has natural luster, incredible tensile strength, and is 20 percent stronger when wet. It also is highly absorbent and dries much faster than cotton, which makes it an excellent nextto-skin fabric. The flax plant can be traced back to the fertile crescent and was cultivated by the Egyptians for textiles—famously shrouds for mummification. Flax eventually spread throughout Europe and was brought to North America in the 1600s by French colonists. Early American textiles were made with linen, and farmers continued to grow flax on their homesteads. The dominance of flax in the United States diminished as cotton production grew through the enslavement of African people and the invention of the cotton gin—the beginnings of fiber industrialization. Cotton remains the choice fiber of the United States, but growing concerns over cotton’s high use of chemical herbicides and water intake has roused interest in linen once again.

OUTDOOR EXHIBITION AT THUNDER BAY ART GALLERY

July 2-Sept. 5 This summer, experience art outside the Thunder Bay Art Gallery with a large mural by artist Sharon Hunter. Kwewog Giiwednog—Women of the North is a large mural that depicts three female figures dressed in regalia who are mother, Dana Boyer, and daughters Brenna and Brooke Chiblow Boyer of the Mississauga First Nation. Artist Sharon Hunter has known these women for a long time and painted them standing along the Mississagi River at the pow wow grounds, looking across the horizon. This work speaks to the women’s prayers and respect to the water. Bright ribbons and red bear berries connect Dana to her clan and home territory. The fish in the river represent her daughters, who belong to the pike clan. The women physically and spiritually inhabit this place and its past, present and future. The North Shore Dish Farmers Markets By Kitty Mayo

Farmers Markets are flourishing along Minnesota’s North Shore, with new vendors and markets adding a fresh infusion of energy. In addition to the steady standbys at Grand Marais, Duluth, and Finland, new off-shoots have sprouted at Silver Bay and in Clover Valley. After 10 years, Two Harbors Farmers Market co-founder Bianca Seay says upcoming vendors are showing growing interest. “We’ve seen huge growth, we’ve never had this many new vendors,” with nine new vendors out of 26. Three Two Harbors market first-timers shared how their ancestors inspired their baking and how the pandemic gave them time to realign some priorities. The Copper Spoon Bakery by Jolene Brink is delicious in its simplicity: Homemade donuts. Building on good dough, Brink lets fun reign as she mixes and matches glazes, sprinkles and toppings on old fashioned potato, raised and vegan donuts. “There’s a donut for everyone, it’s such a simple treat that most people love,” said Brink. Why the Copper Spoon? In a case of “truth as strange as fiction,” researching her family genealogy led Brink to a Unesco World Heritage site in Norway: the spot where her 10th-great grandfather Hans discovered a massive surface copper deposit while hunting reindeer. How could she not have copper in the name? Playing with ideas is part of the fun for Brink, saying it feels wonderful that the stakes are not too high, with the pleasure-factor based on quality ingredients. “It’s a donut, just enjoy it” are some excellent words Brink lives by. After a new baby and a job ending during the pandemic, Brink and family moved back to Minnesota from Montana last summer, realizing they had always wanted to return. Brink’s husband worked at Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center near Finland about a decade ago, and they had good memories of the North Shore. So, they shopped for a house in Two Harbors online, had her parents check it out, and bought it sight-unseen. The reality has been a blessing, according to Brink, “We love it, it has a huge

The Copper Spoon Bakery by Jolene Brink is delicious in its simplicity: homemade donuts. | KRISTEN PLESS kitchen,” calling their move next to the Big Lake “the best decision we’ve ever made.” It’s the happiness factor that motivates Brink to come up with baked delights, saying, “In the middle of this dark-Covid winter, it made me happy to bake something that made people happy.” Discovering her great-grandmother Bertha’s recipe for bismarks is her next challenge: learning how to create the “just right” filled donut. A longer vision has Brink imagining a small commercial kitchen-retail space to sell her donuts a couple days a week. In this version of her future, the space could be rented for a variety of food related projects, from cooking classes to processing garden harvests, or other foodie entrepreneurs.

As Brink sees it, Two Harbors gets passed by too often. “We are really betting on this town, it’s a pretty sweet, little place and we’d love to pull people downtown with hot, fresh donuts.” Sierra Kryzer of Drifted Stone Homestead sells small-batch buns and scones, with items like apple cider scones and rosemary-garlic buns in her rotation. Moving back to Duluth in early 2020 after five years away, Kryzer prepped for her launch into the local farmers market circuit by putting in vegetable and fruiting beds, planting nut and fruit trees, and raising chickens on her “just-shy-of-two-acres market garden.” “I get a great feeling from sustainable living, growing my own food, and sharing it with others in the community,” Kryzer said.

Kryzer learned from her grandma, “an amazing cook” from a young age, and during the pandemic found herself with the time and will for baking experimentation. Finding variability in yeast reaction and dough rise times depending on Duluth elevation and relative humidity of different seasons, Kryzer fell in love with the wild nature of baking and its surprises. A biologist by trade, Kryzer says connecting her passions of nature and sustainability through foraging wild ingredients and growing produce to use in her baked goods is a joy she wants to share. their upbringing, Campbell says the North Shore was a welcome change to an outdoors lifestyle “with hiking and scenery.” Six months later, the pandemic hit and she had a baby. Campbell chose to give up her job as childcare became challenging and looked for a way to integrate her love of baking, art and home-sourced ingredients. Nostalgia firmly in hand, Campbell took her special memories of baking with her mother and got to work learning how to produce professionally decorated cookies. Tapping into her love of painting, Campbell quickly found her palette and was churning out custom orders, and signing up for the market. She soon added another popular goodie with family ties. “Grandma’s recipe for coffee cake was something mom always made for our birthdays, and I have really good memories of that,” said Campbell. Growing her own berries and herbs to use in baking, along with eggs fetched from her own hen house, Campbell feels satisfaction when she takes a home-sourced lavender-blueberry cake out of the oven. Looking ahead Campbell sees a storefront in her new hometown where cookie baskets for every occasion are found. “Two Harbors is growing and getting a younger crowd, it needs stuff like this to draw and keep new people,” said Campbell. The Two Harbors market is found each Saturday morning through October at Burlington Station on Highway 61.

Campfire Desserts Hobo Pie FROM ALLRECIPES.COM.

INGREDIENTS

2 (1 ounce) slices of white bread 1 tablespoon butter, softened 3 tablespoons pie filling of your choice

Spray a hobo pie toaster (pie iron) with nonstick cooking spray. Evenly spread one side of each slice of bread with softened butter. Lay a slice of bread, butter side down, into the toaster. Spoon on pie filling, and top with second slice of bread, butter side up.

Campfire Banana Splits FROM ALLRECIPES.COM.

INGREDIENTS

Close up toaster and cook over a hot campfire, turning occasionally, until the pie is hot and golden brown, about 5 minutes.

6 large bananas 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips 1 (10.5 ounce) package of miniature marshmallows

Campfire Pineapple Cakes FROM ALLRECIPES.COM.

INGREDIENTS

1/2 cup butter, softened 4 cake doughnuts, halved 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 4 pineapple rings Cooking spray

Preheat the grill for high heat, or start a campfire. Spray 4 sheets of aluminum foil, large enough to wrap bananas, with cooking spray. Slice the peel of the banana from stem to bottom, while slicing the banana inside lengthwise. The bananas can be cut into slices instead if you like, (while still in the peel) for easier handling later. Carefully open the banana just wide enough to place the chocolate chips and marshmallows inside the peel with the banana. Stuff with as much of the chocolate chips and marshmallows as desired. Wrap the bananas with the aluminum foil and place on the grill or directly in the coals of a fire. Leave in long enough to melt the chips and the marshmallows, about 5 minutes. Unwrap bananas, open the peels wide, and eat with a spoon.

Brown Bears FROM ALLRECIPES.COM.

INGREDIENTS

1/4 cup ground cinnamon 1 cup white sugar 1/2 cup butter, melted 1 (10 ounce) can refrigerated biscuit dough

Mix cinnamon and sugar together in a bowl. Pour melted butter into another bowl. Separate biscuits and form each piece of dough into a rope 4 to 5 inches long. Wrap the dough pieces around sticks. Hold sticks over campfire and slowly turn until the biscuit dough is browned and set, 8-10 minutes. Dip biscuits into melted butter and then into cinnamon sugar. Eat biscuits from sticks.

Spread butter onto the cut-sides of each doughnut half. Sprinkle brown sugar evenly over the butter. Sandwich a pineapple ring between the halves of each doughnut. Prepare four squares of aluminum foil with cooking spray. Put each sandwich onto the prepared side of a foil sheet; wrap foil around sandwiches to seal into a pouch. Cook by placing pouches near a campfire until heated through, about 20 minutes.

Finding motivation is sometimes a matter of better understanding yourself. | STOCK

Got Motivation? By Hartley Newell-Acero & Amy Schmidt Have you ever had a time in your life when it felt like the best you could do was to trudge? When you were depleted of the energy you needed to move, whether that was literal physical activity or metaphorical growth and change? This last year has taken a lot out of all of us. As we shift into whatever is next, how can we find ways to get motivated to move? There are two types of motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic (internal) motivation flows from the pleasure of doing whatever it is that we’re doing. It’s the curiosity that leads us to explore something new, and it’s the satisfaction that sustains us even when what we’re doing is difficult. Extrinsic (external) motivation is spurred by outside incentives. It’s what makes us strive for rewards and try to avoid punishments. If those rewards or punishments disappear, so will the behaviors they motivate. If you’re struggling to find the gumption to get going, pause and ask yourself, “Does this feel like something that I have to do or something that I want to do?” If you’re feeling stuck, it’s most likely a “have to.” Take that big “have to” and break it down into smaller components. Is there any part of it that’s intrinsically appealing? Shift your focus to that part and see if you’re able to find a “want” that has more energy inside it. For instance, we all know that physical activity is necessary for good health. But how many of us struggle to find the motivation to actually make ourselves exercise? What would happen if you flipped the script? Instead of exercising to avoid illness or reach a goal weight, what if you

got active and went for a walk just because it feels good to be outside or simply because you sleep so much better at night? Whether you call it exercising or getting active, when the motivation that feeds it comes from inside you, it’s much more likely to endure. Just as we have internal and external motivations, we also have internal and external expectations about how we’ll respond to those motivations. In general, we react to those expectations in one of four distinct ways. Upholders readily meet both inner and outer expectations. They’re highly disciplined and can sometimes stray into rigidness. Their motto is, “Discipline is my freedom.” Obligers have a much easier time meeting the expectations of others than they do motivating themselves. Their motto is, “You can count on me, and I’m counting on you to count on me.” Questioners only willingly do what makes sense to them. Their motto—“I’ll comply, if you convince me why.” Rebels resist both inner and outer expectations. Their motto—“You can’t make me, and neither can I.” Having an idea of your “tendency” helps you to purposefully create circumstances that play to the strengths of both your intrinsic motivations and how you react to expectations in general. To find out more about the Four Tendencies, visit author Gretchen Rubin’s website: quiz.gretchenrubin.com. Northern Trails Casting Lake Superior Shorelines: W5 By Gord Ellis

There is no lake more intimidating than Lake Superior. It is the Big Kahuna, a seemingly endless ocean of fresh water that disappears beyond the horizon. Most boat fishermen find Superior intimidating, so who in their right mind would try to fish it from shore? That is a reasonable question. But didn’t David take down Goliath? There is something deeply satisfying about standing on the edge of Superior, casting out as far as humanly possible and feeling a steelhead or lake trout thump your spoon. It is a feeling that never gets old. Here are the W5 of casting Lake Superior shorelines.

Why? Lake Superior is massive and daunting, but many of the fish species most desired by anglers are at least occasional shore huggers. These species include coaster brook trout, steelhead, coho and chinook salmon and brown trout. Fish that are most often found in deeper basin areas, such as whitefish and lake trout, will also make forays into shore depending on the season, water temperature and wind action. Warm water species like pike, walleye and perch can also be caught along Superior shores. Shoreline fishing can be even more productive than boat fishing in certain places and under the right conditions. Finding those conditions is the trick.

Where? You can shore fish anywhere the spirit moves you on Lake Superior. On the Canadian side, we are blessed with long stretches of shoreline that has public access. The problem is not every rocky shoreline has fish. Most of it won’t. That does not mean you can’t fluke a fish, but you need to pick spots that have the highest potential. On Lake Superior, some of the key places to look for are river mouths, points that extend into deeper water, narrows or neckdowns between shore and islands, manmade berms and piers or docks. This is a small selection of things to look for but gives you a good starting point. Some popular shore-casting spots are well known. Many more are out of the way and off the beaten path. I’d recommend looking closely at a map of Superior’s shoreline, then looking for access points to any spots that have potential. You may have to bushwhack a

Casting the cold clear water of Superior. | GORD ELLIS bit, or walk a beach, but the further you are from easy access the more likely it is you will find a jewel.

When? Shore-casting by design requires open water, but on Superior, that doesn’t rule out winter. Most of the lake doesn’t freeze, although on the Canadian side, many of the bays and inlets do. The shore bound angler’s best bets are found during the spring and fall. Spring is when steelhead will begin nosing around river mouths and in bays that are adjacent to those rivers. Steelhead are at the peak of brightness pre-spawn, but the spawned-out fish in late May and June often hit the hardest and jump the highest. Lake trout, whitefish and brook trout are also quite active along shorelines in the spring, as are warm water fish such as pike and bass. Summer is the most difficult time as water temperatures, particularly close to shore, tend to be too warm for salmonids. There are parts of the lake that simply never warm up, and here you can cast shore through the dog days. Bring a thermometer and use it. If the water temperature is less than 55 F., you have a shot at trout. Bass, pike and walleye, on the other hand, like

warm summer water, so it is a great time to target them. Late summer and fall are my favourite time of year to shore cast Superior. The water is cooling, the air is fresh and salmon, lake trout and steelhead begin to stage. Although river mouths are the main draw, you can be a long way from a river and still connect with chrome trout and salmon. These fish cover water and often use shoreline as they head to the spawning rivers. Lake trout will be schooling off rocky reefs and berms and can be very aggressive after summer begins to wane. I recall one September day a few years ago, when casting a spoon off a rock shore east of Nipigon was met with one laker strike after another. The fish were practically fighting each other to nail it. No, it doesn’t always work that way, but when it does, it is memorable.

What? Gear for shore-casting doesn’t need to be fancy, but there are a few tweaks that will allow for maximum range. I’d recommend a medium/heavy spinning rod of at least 8 feet in length. Match that with a high-capacity spinning reel spooled up with a quality 20-pound test braid. Attach an 18-inch leader of 15-pound fluorocarbon line and a metal clasp. Spoons are a great choice for shore casting as they are wind cheaters and flashy. The Little Cleo, Kro-

codile and Williams Bully spoons are all a good choice. The heavier the spoon, the further it will cast, but the faster it will sink. A 3/8-ounce is a good all-around weight. Crankbaits can also be deadly when cast, especially heavier ones like the X Rap. I’ve also had great luck casting jigs, both bucktail and rubber bodied, and then swimming them back to shore. Fly anglers can also cash in on shore fish, although it takes willpower and commitment. Winds are the norm on Superior and casting long distances can be difficult if you are not able to wade. Sinking line and streamers are the norm. Speaking of wading, I’d recommend that anyone who is serious about exploring shore-casting Superior buy some quality chest waders, insulated if possible. You will appreciate the extra insulation as you wade deeper than your knees in Superior’s often ice-cold water.

Who? Anyone with an adventurous spirit and the willingness to angle in tricky conditions can shore fish. Take the chance and enjoy the excitement of connecting with a fish from the shore of Superior this year.

Every advantage is needed when fishing Lake Superior. | GORD ELLIS

EAST TWIN LAKE BY JOE SHEAD WHY GO: East Twin has a very high, naturally reproducing walleye population, although the fish tend to be small. The lake has no cabins, providing an undisturbed setting without the restrictions of the Boundary Waters. ACCESS: Head up the Gunflint Trail and turn left onto South Brule Road. Turn left on the Lima Grade. The road runs between East and West Twin. The boat landing is on the west end of the lake, straight across from the access to West Twin. There’s a concrete ramp with a dock and parking for about six vehicles with trailers. There’s also a three-site campground. VITALS: East Twin Lake is 172 acres with a maximum depth of 19 feet. West Twin lies adjacent (although you’ll have to pull your boat out of the water and re-launch). West Twin is 133 acres with a maximum depth of 37 feet. The water in West Twin is clearer because East Twin sometimes develops algae blooms in summer. GAME SPECIES PRESENT: Walleye WALLEYE: East Twin has a simple fish community consisting of walleyes, suckers and some minnow species. That’s it. In fact, walleyes weren’t even native to the lake. Matthew Weberg, assistant area fisheries supervisor in Grand Marais, says the DNR only knows of one walleye stocking back in 1928, and apparently, they took. Weberg says the lake has always been known as a high-density walleye lake with small average size. “There are high numbers and slow growth,” Weberg says. “It kind of indicates they’re not only competing with white suckers, but also with themselves. Most of the fish tend to be in the 10- to 15-inch range.” Weberg says walleyes likely eat invertebrates and minnow species, the most abundant of which is creek chubs. Due to the high population of small walleyes, they may also cannibalize. There are a few cabins 42

on West Twin, and some property owners have expressed interest in stocking perch to give walleyes an additional food source, but Weberg says so far, no action has been taken. There’s good walleye structure in East Twin, including a few islands and a bottom consisting mostly of rubble and boulder. East Twin gets some algae blooms in summer, which may improve the daytime bite. West Twin doesn’t.

much appeal to most anglers, but they do provide some harvest opportunity in the spring when they run in the creek between the two lakes. Suckers may be speared or collected by hand during their spring spawning run. At other times, a nightcrawler fished on bottom may take fish. Suckers generally run 15 inches or so in the Twin Lakes.

SUCKERS, ANYONE? The Twin Lakes also have high populations of white suckers. Generally, they don’t have

We went out for a short weekend camping trip and she was having fun learning how to snorkel and swim with the fish, which turned into a treasure/trash hunt for the two days we were there. We had an opportunity to make the lake just a little more beautiful. This picture is our haul from the first day of the cleanup. We ended up removing an entire large garbage bag’s worth of trash from the lake, and finding some pretty cool old bottles, cans, fishing lures, a two-way radio, pair of Oakley sunglasses, some nice scissors, and a “No Spearing” sign. | ANDREW SCHAMBERGER

You either spend your childhood on one of the thousand inland lakes with an aluminum boat and an outboard motor, or on a sailboat to battle the beast of the greatest lake in the world. looking surf bums in Geraldton one summer. Enamored by the sailing lifestyle, these guys were living out of their van and spreading good vibes, that was it for him— it would be a life-long adventure of sailing to come. In 1998 Bob bought a Sirius 28, a performance cruiser that would take him and his wife and three young sons all across Lake Superior and into all of our hidden little gems dispersed along the shores. Aside from adventure cruising, Bob also raced this boat for four to five years and embedded himself in our sailing community. It wasn’t long after that an upgrade was needed for a bigger, faster boat. After patiently waiting for the right boat to come along, an owner of a J35 performance racer that Bob contacted a few years prior decided it was time to sell. Bobsled was born and has been a key piece of Thunder Bay’s sailing community ever since. I asked Bob what he enjoys most about sailing in our community and having your own crew on the boat. The answer is obvious, but something you don’t realize until you take that first plunge and delve into the sailing subculture of the Great Lakes. “There is a commonality between many sailors that they often have an adventurous spirit. Generally, those in the community don’t mind working hard and are eager to learn things. There is an old law of the sea that I stand by. ‘You have to give help if you can do it without putting yourself in danger.’ There is a comradery of trust and sharing among sailors.”

Bob sees his boat as welcoming and usually has a crew that is friendly, eager to learn, teach, and known for a good laugh. They aren’t always at the top of the fleet but there isn’t a soul out there that would deny they are having the best possible time on the water. In 2018 and 2019 I crewed with Bobsled on Lake Superior offshore races for fun. Offshore races tend to be much longer and have straighter trajectories so it is a great time for beginner crew to join. There are often long lags in between the action where you get to sit back and view our shoreline for all that it is. It became a completely different world for me. To me, it is like being in Fantasia or Waterworld—this unbelievable commune with a backdrop you simply can’t see from land. During 2020, in the midst of a worldwide pandemic where the race season was late to start, I managed to reconnect with some old crew of Bobsled. I became the double hander of Chris Hache’s boat S.V. Sillage, a Ticon 30 that would take me to hidden islands, saunas and shipwrecks. Ending the season with some incredible races on Bobsled, you wouldn’t think the season could get any better. That is until a Tanzer 22 was up for grabs (yes, for free) in our sailing community. Now here we are in 2021, I am learning to be one of the skippers of a Tanzer 22 named Mars, and in training for North American Championships with an up and coming all-female team, helmed by Audrey Dallaire Gagnon, on a Viper 640 named Surf. All it took was a few beers and some charcuterie.

NORTHERN SKY AUGUST 2021 By Deane Morrison, MN STARWATCH

Jupiter and Saturn are at their best of the year this month, thanks to Earth lapping them in the race around the sun. When Earth laps a planet, the event is called opposition because Earth passes directly between the planet and the sun, making the planet appear opposite the sun in the sky. Therefore, a planet at opposition rises around sunset and sets around sunrise. Saturn is at opposition on the 2nd, Jupiter on the 19th. On those dates, the respective planets will be up all night. They will also be near their maximum brightness for the year, although the difference will hardly be noticeable, given how far out Jupiter, and especially Saturn, orbit. The planets’ average distances from the sun are 484 million miles for Jupiter and 886 million miles for Saturn. Traveling the night sky below and slightly east of the planets is Fomalhaut, dubbed “the loneliest star” for its status as the only bright star in its patch of sky. Its constellation—Piscis Austrinus, the southern fish— ranks among the dimmest.

Venus still hovers close to the horizon after sunset, coming out slightly farther south from night to night. And in the morning sky, the familiar winter constellations rise earlier every day en route to their annual comeback. The Perseid meteor shower is expected to peak the night of the 11th-12th, but the nights on either side of it may be just as good. The best time is usually after midnight. With no moon to interfere, this is a favorable year for the shower. August’s full moon arrives shortly after moonset the morning of the 22nd. This one qualifies as a blue moon according to one definition: the third of four full moons in a season. Why the third, rather than the fourth, was designated special is complicated, but what’s not to love about a summer with four full moons? The University of Minnesota’s public viewings of the night sky at its Duluth and Twin Cities campuses have been curtailed due to the pandemic. Maang at Dawn (Loon) By Sam Zimmerman It is such a magical mandioo (spirit), the maang (loon); a doodem (clan) animal of the Ojibwe representing spiritual leadership with its haunting song traveling across the waters of Gitchi Gami (Lake Superior). I saw niizh (two) maang diving recently and surfacing closer and closer to where I was sitting on the shore with my morning makademashkikiwaaboo (coffee). I wanted to capture the gwanaaj (beauty) of it surfacing during the mookise giizis (rising sun). The phases of the moon represent the passing of time reflecting the generations of those who have enjoyed its song. The middle full moon is the Miin Giizis (berry moon) of July. His raven research has taken him around the world from forests of Maine and Montana to Germany and the Canadian Arctic. Written in an easy-going style, his book explores things like raven behavior; intelligence; problem-solving; playful behaviour; distinct personalities; vocalization; recognition of individuals; and, ravens who live with humans (like 8-year-old Merlin who even vacations with his human family). Also included are references to other studies on raven-wolf relationships by wolf researchers like L. David Mech, who studied for decades the wolves and ravens on Isle Royale.—Elle Andra-Warner

Strange Tales Duluth Connection to Hollywood Walk of Fame By Elle AndraWarner

If you visit Hollywood and stroll along its famed Hollywood Walk of Fame honoring icons in the entertainment industry, you’ll find embedded in the sidewalks the coral-pink terrazzo stars awarded to two Duluth-born legends: Marguerite De La Motte and Peggy Knudsen. Beatrice Marguerite De La Motte was born June 22, 1902, the eldest of two children of Joseph and Nellie De La Motte. They lived in a Munger Terrace townhouse, later moving to a home on 16th Avenue East. After her father was disbarred from practicing law in Minnesota, the family moved to San Diego, California where Marguerite—who had studied dance at Duluth’s Old Masonic Temple—continued with her dance performances. In 1918, while dancing at the Miller Dollar Theatre in Los Angeles, she was ‘discovered’ by silent actor/producer Douglas Fairbanks Sr. who offered 16-year-old Marguerite a role in his upcoming movie, Arizona. Marguerite developed a close friendship with Fairbanks and his wife, the famous Canadian actress Mary Pickford, and starred in several films with Fairbanks including The Mark of Zorro (1920), Three Musketeers (1921) and The Iron Mask (1929). In the next 24 years, Marguerite made more than 60 films, ending her movie career in 1942 when ‘talkie’ films became popular.

She died on March 11, 1950 at age 47 of cerebral thrombosis. Ten years later in 1960, her Hollywood Walk of Fame star was posthumously awarded.

While having a successful film career, there was tragedy in her personal life. Both her parents had died by August 1920, leaving Marguerite and her 12-yearold brother Robert to be cared for by silent movie producer J. L. Frothingham, who became their legal guardian. And it’s here that her story takes a twist. According to a report in the Oakland Tribune (September 6, 1920), she could not spend any of her salary without her guardian’s permission, noting that “Each week the paycheck of the movie and they must total a million a year, will go into the hands of Frothingham.” She later gained control of her money. Tragedy struck again after 1924 when 21-year-old Marguerite married her second husband, John Bowers, one of the most popular silent film actors of the time. As a couple, they acted together in 12 films. However, it was a rocky marriage. They separated but were still legally married when in 1936 Bowers committed suicide. The coroner’s report stated that Bowers “Drowned as a result of suicide—jumped 50

for the 1937 classic movie, A Star is Born. After her career ended, Marguerite took on an inspector’s job at a California war

After her father died in 1940, the family moved to Chicago, where Peggy’s first acting role was in the CBS daytime radio program “The Woman in White,” followed in 1942 with her Broadway debut in “My Sister Eileen.” Years later, when movie columnist Louella Parsons asked Peggy how she came to Hollywood, she said “It sounds so trite and dull to say a talent scout saw me—but that’s exactly what happened when I was in ‘My Sister Eileen.’ A Warner Brothers representative invited me to make a screen test which brought me here. In the same article, Parsons wrote “One thing I liked particularly about Peggy is the absence of all conceit and affectation.” During her career, Peggy had more than 50 movie and TV credits, co-starred with many major stars like Joan Crawford, Humphrey Bogart, Ronald Reagan and with Errol Flynn in her final film Istanbul (1957). She was also a guest star on many TV shows like Perry Mason, Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet and Bat Masterson and it was her contribution to television for which she received her Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 1960. Peggy was married three times. First, eloping in 1942 with radio executive Adrian Samish; they had one daugh-

ter Peggy. In 1949 she married Jim Jordan, son of radio’s famous Fibber McGee and Molly; they had two daughters Janice Colleen and Marian Lou. And her third husband was an electrical contractor she wed in February 1962 and divorced eight months later in October. Chronic arthritis brought a premature end to Peggy’s career in 1965. During the next 15 years, her long-time friend actress Jennifer Jones (they had met in NY, lived and job-hunted together) is reported to have helped provide care for her. Peggy died of cancer in Encino, California on July 11, 1980 at age 57. Carrying on Peggy’s movie legacy is her grandson, John Orloff, a screenwriter nominated for an Emmy for HBO’s Band of Brothers (2001) and for an Independent Spirit Award for A Mighty Heart (2007).
