More than 100 families use the local food shelf every month, which is why the Grand Marais Art Colony annually holds the Empty Bowls Dinner and Silent Auction, a community fundraiser for the local food shelf to help end hunger. Community members, school children and local potters made more than 550 bowls for the event. Lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., dinner from 5-7 p.m. For a $10 donation guests can pick out their favorite bowl to fill with soup donated by a local restaurants. Annual Bluegrass Masters Weekend Nov. 2-4
The North Shore Music Association presents a full weekend of bluegrass music and workshops for both musicians and fans alike. The featured instrument for the workshops will be the banjo, and the featured performer will be Bill Emerson, known as one of the five most influential string banjo players of all time. The North House Folk School is celebrating the history of winter travel and traditional ways of life in the North. The Fourth Annual Light up a Life event offers friends and family members the opportunity to celebrate the life of a loved one. Every donation provides one light bulb on the memory tree honoring a loved one. A tree lighting ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. in the entrance of the clinic/hospital. Celebrate the Holidays in Schroeder The Cross River Heritage Center in Schroeder reopens on Saturday, Nov. 17, for a holiday celebration with krumkaka and lefse demonstrations, refreshments and the quilt raffle. Also North Shore Creations holds its annual sale at the Schroeder Town Hall. Both events are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Christmas Lighting, Caroling at Last Chance Last Chance Gallery will hold it’s annual Holiday Market at the gallery on Nov. 23-24. On Friday, Nov. 23, there will be bonfire, caroling, tree lighting and live music starting at 6 p.m. The gallery is opens both days at 10 a.m. Hovland Art Festival Holiday Sale will be held at the Hovland Town Hall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24. Lots of artists and artisans represented at this sale. Refreshments will be available. Crafts and Consultants Open House and Holiday Sale is at the Cook County Community Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24. The Girl Scouts sell poinsettias at the event too. Northwoods Fiber Guild’s Open House and Holiday Sale is set for Dec. 1 at the Grand Marais Art Colony. Art Underground Holiday Bazaar opens at Betsy Bowen’s Studio at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, featuring art from local and regional artists in every media. The exhibit continues at the

By Shawn Perich In Cook County, having an active lifestyle is often why people choose to live here, but not everyone is as active as should be to remain healthy. Getting everyone in Cook County moving more is the goal of the day-long Active Living Summit to be held Nov. 14 at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts in Grand Marais. “Active Living is about the ability for people of all ages to be active throughout their lives,” says Kristin Wharton, county coordinator of the Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP). Studies show long-term health is linked more with daily activity than to exercise. For some folks, being more active may be as simple as walking rather than driving short distances. Others may need to add more physical activity to their daily routine. Sometimes, people’s opportunities for more physical activity are limited by circumstances beyond their control. A lack of crosswalks may inhibit people from walking from one place to another. “Locally, downtown Grand Marais is very walkable,” says Wharton. “At the summit we’ll get examples from other places and look for local opportunities to build upon what already exists.” Summit participants will learn from three noted speakers. Former Congressman Jim Oberstar, founder of the national Safe Routes to School program, will lead a morning walk to both the Cook County and Great Expectations schools. He will start the conference with a keynote talk about how national transportation policy addresses more than moving goods and vehicles, but also physical activities such as walking and biking. Charlie Butter and Margo Furcht will participate in a panel discussion about the worksite wellness program in place at North Shore Hospital. The discussion will include a 2-4-minute video about the program by local videographer Patrick Knight. Pan-
elists will talk about how the program was established and its successes. For an activity break after lunch, there will be a walking tour of the County Road 7 corridor near the schools and the safety enhancements now in place. Most of the afternoon is devoted to a “Curbside Chat” with engineer Charles Marohn, the executive director of Strong Towns, a nonprofit group that advises small towns on how to achieve economic strength and resiliency. He will lead a discussion to look at community resources and shared values. A brainstorming session afterward will allow community leaders to consider steps they can take to keep the ideas moving forward. Over 50 people are expected to attend the summit, including some from other communities across the Arrowhead region. Wharton said you don’t have to commit to the whole day, but preregistration is important. The summit is hosted by the Grand Marais Active Living Steering Committee with grant support from the Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation, the Knight Fund of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation, Cook County SHIP, Sawtooth Mountain Clinic, Inc., and Cook County Public Health and Human Services.

by Joan Farnam November is always a busy time in Cook County as everyone gets ready for Christmas and the winter snows. This year is no exception. First up is the North Shore Music Association’s 22nd annual Bluegrass Masters Weekend at Lutsen Resort Nov. 2-4. The banjo is this year’s featured instrument, and Bill Emerson and his band, Sweet Dixie, will be at the resort all weekend. Emerson is one of the most influential string banjo players in the country, and he and his band will be in concert on Saturday night (Nov. 3) as well as teach workshops during the day. The weekend also features lots of opportunities for jamming as well as a chance to meet old friends. For more information, call 218-3871272. Tickets for the Saturday night concert ($18 adults, $8 age 12 and under) go on sale at the event. Also that weekend, the Grand Marais Playhouse launches its holiday play, “Doo-Wop Wed Widing Hood” by Charlie Lovett with music and lyrics by Bill Francoeur. As of this writing, the play was still in early rehearsals, but we’ve heard stories about 50 poodle skirts being sewn for the show, characters like the Big Bad Wolf and Loud Prince Frank as well as Little Red Riding Hood, to name a few, all having adventures on the stage. The large cast includes lots of enthusiastic children and adults. It should be a funny show. The play opens on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. Performances are Nov. 3-4 and Nov. 10-11. The Empty Bowls Dinner & Silent Auction, a fundraiser for the Cook County Food Shelf, will be held at the First Congregational Church Thursday, Nov. 8. There are two servings during the day: 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. For a $10 donation, patrons can pick out a handmade bowl and enjoy a soup and bread dinner. More than 550 bowls have been made for this event by local potters as well as school children and members of the community. A Silent Auction is also held to help raise money for next year’s event. Also of note, the Grand Marais Art Colony’s Member Show & Sale continues in the Founders Hall at the Art Colony through Nov. 21. More than 70 artists are exhibiting in this show in a wide variety of media, including oils, watercolors, pastels, pencil drawings, ceramics, fiber art, encaustic work, sculpture and mixed media. The show includes work by wellestablished regional artists as well as emerging artists and youth. The Art Colony is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week. Dave Keller is pretty amazed and pleased at how much he likes the restaurant business. He and his wife, Rebecca, bought the Chicago Bay Marketplace in Hovland from Lisa and Jason Mesenbring Aug. 20 and are having a great time with it. “We’re just having fun. That’s all that matters to me,” Keller said in a telephone interview recently. Keller is a former corporate employee. “I’d been working for the same corporation for the last 20 years,” he said. “It was First Group, a bus business.” First Group owns Greyhound and runs the Duluth Transit Authority as well as many bus services around the country, he said. It also has facilities in Canada and is the largest provider of rail service in Europe, with corporate headquarters in Aberdeen, Scotland. “We were immense,” Keller said. His branch of the company was based in Blaine, where he worked. His wife, Rebecca, is a nurse and just
recently terminated her job to move to Cook County permanently. How did they get here?
The pair were vacationing up here with their family in June, and Keller said he happened to grab the local newspaper and looked to see what kind of business opportunities were available. He was really excited to find that the Chicago Bay Marketplace was for sale. “I came up on Tuesday and that was it,” he said. “I went back, put in my notice, and four weeks later we were up here. We’re happy as a lark. Life’s too short to be miserable every day.” That attitude has spilled over into the way the Kellers are managing the Marketplace. There’s a big screen TV there now, so that people can watch football games if they want.

New Harbor House Grille Serving Home-cooked Food and Fulton Beer By Joan Farnam Ed Straub is putting on his chef’s jacket again, and he’s pretty excited about it.
Then he decided to take a break from the kitchen and accepted a job with North Shore Dairy. But his love of cooking continued, and, last year, he ran the kitchen at Naniboujou. Every chef dreams of opening his own restaurant, but it didn’t seem possible here, Cindy Straub said. “We just never thought it would be a reality,” she said. But it became a reality this summer. “It’s been fun to work out all the details—and there’s a lot of details,” Cindy said, laughing.
Not only will he be an executive chef, he’ll be working for himself in his new restaurant, Harbor House Grille & Catering, which is set to open Nov. 5.
“We’re really looking forward to finally seeing the results of our hard work.” One of the most amazing things for Straub is that he’s going to be able to sell Fulton Beer, a wildly popular beer in the Twin Cities developed by Ryan Petz, who grew up in Hovland. “We’re going to carry the two beers that you can get through the distributors: Sweet Child of the Vine and Lonely Blonde,” he said. They don’t deliver up here, but Straub is making a trip down to the Twin Cities to pick up his first cases plus a keg or two. And Petz is coming to the opening. “It’s just fabulous,” Straub said.

“I’m excited and a little nervous,” Straub said in an interview last month. He and his wife, Cindy, purchased the building and property where Chez Jude has been housed for several years. Judi and Peter Barsness, who owned and operated Chez Jude, plan to continue that restaurant’s traditions with its own catering and cooking school, Judi Barsness said in a press release recently. “It won’t necessarily be a steakhouse,” he said. “We’ll serve down-to-earth, home-cooked kind of food, including wood-fired pizzas.”
“I had an uncle who would go the Carpenter’s Inn, which was owned by two Danish guys who had just moved here from Denmark,” he said. “My uncle started telling the guy about me and he said ‘Bring him in.’ ” Straub was hired on the spot and started line cooking and short order soon after. When the two Danish men sold that restaurant and moved to the Marriott in Worcester, Mass., Straub went with them and became the PM dinner supervisor for the line cooks. “After six months, I was promoted to banquet chef,” Straub said. “I was probably 19.” His skills continued to develop as he followed his mentor to Providence, R. I., and then to

Devils Track Nordic Ski Shop is Ready for Snow By Ada Igoe Dave Bartol doesn’t know when the snow will fall this winter, but whenever it does, he’ll be ready. “If it snowed next week, it wouldn’t bother me at all,” he said on a mid-October evening, as he sat in Devils Track Nordic Ski Shop surrounded by everything a Nordic skier could want: skis, poles, bindings, wax, boots, apparel and accessories. In 2000, Bartol started the ski shop in his television room when he became interested in selling ski wax. Then he became interested in being a dealer for Madshus, a Norwegian company that’s the oldest manufacturer in the world. Now he has a full service shop, offering repairs, ski waxing and special orders. He also has a busy online shop and offers rentals. The business still operates out of his home, located on Pincushion Mountain just off the Gunflint Trail. Three years ago, he built an addition to the house to create a small shop and service area. Eventually he’d like to move the shop to downtown Grand Marais to increase the amount of foot traffic. Still, there are advantages to his current location. “I can tell people the ski conditions right away,” he said. A small ski loop connects the ski shop with the Pincushion Mountain trail system, and he has an area behind the shop where he can test out skis and waxes. “We do get a few people who ski in and shop,” he said. Bartol’s been skiing since the early ‘80s. He’s competed in 17 Birkebeiners, and his skiing has taken him as far as Lillehammer, Norway, for the Masters World Cup in 2004. During his time skiing at both

recreational and elite levels, he’s tested out a lot of skis and waxes. The shop lets him use that knowledge to help other skiers find the gear best suited for them. “People really like the small shop atmosphere,” he said. He offers brands that he personally feels are the best, including Alpina boots, Craft clothing, Rottefella bindings, and Swix wax. Clothing is especially popular, and he’s outfitted ski teams as far away as Great Britain with ski suits. He has skis suited for racers, recreational and backcountry skiers, and even stocks roller skis so his customers can ski in the off season. He offers skis for customers as young as two years old and helps outfit members of the high school ski team. Bartol said he enjoys watching skiing technology change and improve. Over the years, he’s watched ski boots get warmer and bindings become more adjustable

and easier to use. “One of the things I find the most enjoyable is when someone breaks a binding and I’m able to either fix it or get a replacement the next day and they’re able to continue on with their vacation,” he said. Active in the North Shore Ski and Run Club, Bartol helps with races and grooming at Pincushion. He also gives waxing and rollerski clinics. The shop, located at 922 Gunflint Trail, is open Friday – Monday during the ski season, although he does take a couple weekends off during the winter so that he can travel to races himself. A Solid Summer for County Economy By Jim Boyd For the Cook County economy, summer 2012 wasn’t the best of times or the worst of times. Most observers agree it was a “solid” summer, reflecting the nation’s slow climb out of the doldrums that follow a severe financial shock. Because more than 80 percent of the county economy is tourism-related—making it by far the most tourism-dependent of Minnesota’s 87 counties—lodging-tax receipts provide a reasonable measure of how the county has fared. From confidential data not included in public releases, the County Auditor’s Office reports that May-through-August lodging-tax receipts rose 8.1 percent from 2011. For the entire year to date, growth was a more modest 4.8 percent, attributable to last winter’s poor snowfall. So far this year, Grand Marais is leading the charge, with 10.4 percent growth, compared to 2.5 percent for Lutsen-Tofte and 7 percent for the Gunflint Trail. But last year, Grand Marais showed the least growth (1 percent) while Lutsen-Tofte and Gunflint did much better (8.8 and 8.4 percent respectively). So Grand Marais needed to grow less in absolute terms this year to show a much larger percentage increase.

Analyses Mike Larson at Lutsen Lodging Company and Real Estate Group is encouraged by the summer results. “My sense,” he wrote in an email, “is people are sick-n-tired of being sick-n-tired of the news. So this year … they said, ‘To heck with it; in the big picture things are really not that bad; so we are going to do what we love to do … travel up to Cook County and have some fun.’ ” Dennis Rysdahl, Bluefin Bay owner, has a similar take. “Bluefin, Surfside and Temperance Landing had good summer business …, up slightly from last year and much improved from the levels to which they dropped during the recession. We saw small decreases in sales of gifts and food and beverage which we attributed to consumers deciding to not forgo their vacations but to economize on some of the extras....” Signs of renewed growth were evident in other sectors as well. Dave Demmer, assistant administrator at Cook County Planning & Zoning, reports that the county issued permits for “38 new [housing] builds and one 4-unit apartment complex.” These permits, he says, “represent the
greatest increase in new homes being built in the county since the recession.” The same is true in real estate. Kim Wolff of Timberwolff Realty in Lutsen reports that “the general consensus in our Timberwolff office is that we have not been this busy since 20052006. Buyers are looking and they are seizing the moment to buy now before prices increase and, most importantly, while interest rates are so low.” Wolff ran preliminary sales numbers from the Multiple Listing Service which show real estate sales this year are on line to exceed 2011 sales by several million dollars. Terry Backlund of Backlund Realty agrees that buyers are very interested, although sales still are just a small fraction of what they were in 2006, before the recession. “We’re back to the level of 2006 in terms of interest,” Backlund said. But it has become much more difficult to finish the deal, he added. Banks are now very picky about such things as legal descriptions and size of down payment, so that many of those who would like to buy can’t quite get it done. Promising as the summer figures look, it’s also important to remember that they reflect the county’s slow effort to climb out of a deep recessionary hole.
At the height of the boom in 2006, for example, the county issued more than 90 building permits for homes and cabins – more than double what the county reports for this year. The improved numbers for 2012 represent recovery, not growth. And with regards to growth, the longer trends do not look promising. Between 2000 and 2012, the Cook County economy grew an average of 2.4 percent per year. But during that same period, inflation averaged 2.7 percent a year. Overall, Cook County businesses did not make enough each year to even pay their bills, let alone expand, hire more people or invest in improvements. Instead, they were busy trimming costs where they could: Between 2000 and 2010, the U.S. Census found that the county lost 8 percent of its jobs, mostly in lodging and food services. Cook County may be a living example of what happens to a middle-class tourism economy when the benefits of economic productivity flow to a narrow band of Americans at the top of the income scale. Although the productivity of American workers has grown at a robust rate in recent decades,

Hunting and Trapping in Superior National Forest Hunting and trapping is allowed on Superior National Forest lands, including the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, except within the limits of developed recreation sites such as campgrounds and boating sites or in situations that would endanger other Forest visitors. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is the agency responsible for regulating hunting and trapping in the State. DNR hunting and trapping regulations apply on the Superior National Forest. Here are a few additional points to be aware of if you plan to hunt or trap on national forest lands: • Discharging firearms within 150 yards of a residence, building, campsite, developed recreation site or occupied area is not allowed on national forest land. • Hunters may use temporary blinds or portable hunting stands that do not damage live trees. Portable stands are those that are chained, belted, clamped, or tied with rope and do no permanent damage. All hunting blinds or stands found on national forest land after the end of hunting season will be removed and impounded. • Hunters or trappers may not claim an area on the national forest for exclusive use or damage vegetation around a hunting blind or stand.
• Cross country travel on Superior National Forest lands with an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) or other off-highway motor vehicle (OHV) is not allowed. This includes hunting, trapping, game retrieval, or accessing a hunting blind or tree stand. • Designated OHV routes may have changed. Beginning in 2012, an annual Motor Vehicle Use Map will show which roads and trails are open to which type of OHV, as well as any seasonal restrictions. Maps are available at Superior National Forest offices and on the Forest website, listed below. • To determine where national forest lands are, consult a current land ownership map or check with a Superior National Forest office. • Only bring firewood from a Minnesota-certified vendor or non-ash firewood gathered within 100 miles of the Superior National Forest. Pests and diseases can be hidden under bark or in the wood and can be spread by transporting firewood from infected areas into uninfected areas. The Forest Service manages habitat on the Forest in coordination with Tribal government, the Minnesota DNR, and US Fish and Wildlife Service for a wide range of wildlife. Also on that Saturday, Dec. 1, the Holiday Art Underground exhibit opens at Betsy Bowen’s Studio. Staci Drouillard, who curates the event, said artists are encouraged to submit works to the show. It is a holiday bazaar featuring works by local and regional artists, she said. The artwork must arrive in the studio by the week after Thanksgiving. that growth hasn't yielded corresponding wage increases; middle incomes have stagnated or declined slightly. That has been especially true from 2000 to 2012. And people in that stagnating middle represent the critical market for Cook County tourism. When their incomes fail to grow, they're not going to buy more or longer or higher priced vacations, meals, gifts
and souvenirs. While individual businesses may do better or worse, and marketing may be able to woo tourists away from other destinations, if this analysis is accurate, Cook County tourism in general may not grow at robust rates again until the American middle class begins to see genuine wage growth.
