First up this month are two fantastic events — the 11th Annual Plein Air Competition, put on by the Grand Marais Art Colony, and the 6th Annual Radio Waves Music Festival, sponsored by WTIP Community Radio. The music festival is always a great music weekend with bands playing all day and into the night at Sweetheart’s Bluff in the Grand Marais Rec Park. There are onsite food vendors, a dance floor and a children’s tent. The music kicks off at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 6, and continues through Sunday, Sept. 8.

They’ve toured all over the world and produced a number of popular CDs. Last year, they played at the festival as well as joined in jamming sessions with local musicians in venues around Grand Marais over the festival weekend. This year should be no exception.

The Unplugged weekend also includes a variety of coursework, craft demos, music workshops and jam sessions as well as speakers.

The lineup of local bands who will play is impressive. Here’s the list: John Silliman; Yvonne Mills; North Shore Community Swing Band; The Splinters; Bret Berka; Cook County’s Most Wanted; skyBLUEtrio with the ORANGEgirl; Yvonne Mills;

Same-Sex Weddings Bring Business to Cook County By Shawn Perich

V

al Ulstad and Kathy Ogle are planning a September get-together. The Twin Cities physicians are part-time residents of Cook County and are holding the event here. In addition to their friends in the local community, they are inviting family and friends “from far and wide.” They’ve been pleasantly surprised at how many of these farflung folks have decided to attend. So what’s the big occasion? Val and Kathy are getting married. Beginning Aug. 1, same-sex marriage became legal in Minnesota. Val and Kathy, who have been together for 31 years, are excited about finally having the opportunity to tie the knot, even though they had an informal commitment ceremony several years ago. “We want to recognize our love like everyone else does,” Val said. They are not the only same-sex couple in Cook County with wedding plans. However, because so many of Val and Kathy’s guests are traveling here for the wedding, their marriage also illustrates another aspect of same-sex

marriage—the economic impact. Cook County is already a popular destination for weddings. Now that more Minnesotans are able to get married, businesses providing services for weddings—lodging establishments, restaurants, caterers, photographers, florists and more— may be busier than ever. “I just added two same-sex weddings on the same day in September,” said Staci Droulliard, owner of Lola’s Sweet Life Bakery in Grand Marais. “I welcome the business.” Droulliard bakes cakes for 25 to 35 weddings annually and the number increases every year. “I started out doing one cake per week and now I’m doing four weddings on a weekend,” she said.

ater Fair Winds and Fresh W

The wedding business “is huge up here,”

she said, because many couples are drawn to the North Shore’s scenery and ambience. Among same-sex couples, Cook County is known to be a tolerant, welcoming place—all the more reason for it to be a desirable wedding destination. “People love to get married on the North Shore,” said Grand Marais photographer Jess Oullis. While she hasn’t been booked for any samesex weddings yet, Oullis is curious what she will see in her 2014 bookings. “I’m excited it’s happening,” she said of same-sex marriage. “The more weddings, the more people who are coming to the county.”

county is Lutsen Resort, which hosts 50 to 60 weddings per year. Events coordinator Beth Hazelton has been surprised she hasn’t had calls from same-sex couples, but points out the resort is nearly fully booked for weddings in 2014. The average couple makes plans from one year to a year-and-a-half in advance of their wedding. During the summer, the resort already does as many weddings as it can without interfering with the experiences of other guests. Hazelton said they are hoping to grow their off-season weddings and hosted about a dozen during the off season last year. Attracting same-sex couples will require some minor adjustments to marketing materials and staff training. Presently, the resort’s wedding brochure refers to the “bride and groom”—wording that now must be changed. She says they may hold some sensitivity training for the resort staff for working with same sex couples. “We want to make sure both parties are comfortable,” she said. One thing is certain, a same-sex wedding party in Cook County will feel at home.

Co-op Sees Sharp Business Increase in New Building By Joan Farnam

ing to pass. This is especially noticeable in the bulk foods section.

It’s still an adventure to walk into the new Cook County Whole Foods Co-op, almost two months since it first opened.

In the back of the store are large closed coolers for everything from milk to fresh meat, and the cheese section has a cooler of its own.

The automatic doors at the entrance continue to amaze—they’re such a stark contrast to the old building where wind would catch the single door, making it almost impossible to close. Now, we can just sail through. Inside, it’s almost indescribably different. The large produce section is beautiful, layered with well-lit organic fruits and vegetables that just invite a closer look and a purchase or two. The Cook County Whole Foods Co-op has a staff of more than 20 in the summer. Instead of opening a door and letting out all that cold air while you decide what you want, you can peruse the cheddars and goat cheese at your leisure, and then just reach into the open cooler to make your choice. There’s a great bakery section now, too, and the deli has a cooler of its own. There’s also a complete aisle of glass-fronted freezers offering everything from pizzas to sprouted corn tortillas.

The shelving is black and full of items the old store couldn’t carry before because there just wasn’t enough room.

“I love it,” said Kent Jones, who has been working at the co-op for years. “It’s such a great atmosphere. People seem to be very happy shopping here. And I love all the colors.”

And the aisles are so much wider. One can shop without bumping into others or wait-

the outside walls. The mosaics couldn’t be saved when the new store was built, but the color choice for both exterior and interior walls looked to them for inspiration

For example, in the old store, the deli and produce staff had to share space, which was very crowded. Now, the enclosed kitchen gives the deli staff space of their own, and the produce can be washed and prepped in its own area. The new building is more than twice the size of the old— 6,607 square feet vs. 3,200 square feet. The shopping space has more than doubled—up from 1,600 square feet to 3,865. The building is energy efficient, too. It was built with insulated concrete walls, and LED lights are used in all the coolers. A rack system of compressors is used for all the coolers and freezers, too, which reduces electricity costs substantially. Stoltz said they’re already seeing pay back. The co-op’s electric bill for July was less that it was last year, she said. The new store comes with a hefty price tag, though. The entire project cost $2.3 million, she said. That includes an operating budget for the startup, renting a temporary location while the new store was being built and the design and construction of the new space. It also covered the purchase of new food for the store. Because it was decided to have a very quick turnaround— they closed the temporary store and opened in the new space within 36 hours—they had to purchase inventory so that it was on the shelves for the opening, Stoltz said. Co-op owner/members loaned $600,000 for the project. The Co-op also secured loans from the North Shore Federal Credit Union, the Cook County Revolving Loan Fund and the North-

So far, the new co-op is exceeding income projections. Sales for the first week in the new space were up 40 percent. The total July sales were up more than 27 percent from last year, Stoltz said. “It’s nice to see that the new space is working,” she added. From all accounts, customers seem to enthusiastically agree. The Co-op keeps a notebook in the front of the store for comments, product requests, complaints, etc., and on this day, in big letters, a note on the open page said; ‘You Guys Rock!” Indeed.

Pete Kavanaugh singer/songwriter, bluesman Have you always lived in Cook County? I moved here five years ago because my wife (Tracy Benson) is from here and always wanted to return here. So we came back on a big adventure. What projects are you currently working on? I’m working on an acoustic record with John Hartley out of Home Bass Studios in Edina. I still have a live music record of the Pete K Group that I have not released yet. I’m also preparing myself to start producing my own music videos. What about your art continues to attract and fascinate you? It’s the excitement of trying new things in music and growing as an artist. I just love it, everything about it. That’s the whole bottom line -- really loving what you do. Where can we see/hear your work? I’ll be playing with the Pete K Group at the Radio Waves Music Festival, Sept. 6-9 and I have music and my schedule on www.petekavanaughmusic.com.

Cook County has its own Johnny Appleseed house was to find something that I could grow,” he said.

Booth said that lots of research and testing has to be done in the next few years to see how the model works.

He thought of planting lots of maple trees at first, but soon realized there wouldn’t be any pay back for the investment. Apple trees, on the other hand, were a natural.

“We don’t know about costs, how it would transfer from small scale to really large scale,” she said. “And we don’t know how well the firebreak system works. It has been done out West.”

In his research, Block One of Ray Block’s apple trees. discovered the fruiting wall system as well as The sustainable system looked at varieties that might do well on the that Block is envisioning is a good one for North Shore close to Lake Superor. He chose a small homestead, she added. “I just don’t many varieties as well as different root stocks know about the bigger piece.” to see what works best. Block’s trialing of hardy root stock for the David Bedford, a University of Minnesota researcher who developed the Honeycrisp apple, is intrigued by the project and has visited the site, said Diane Booth, Cook County Extension agent. “Bedford is not doing some of the research on this type of system and these rootstocks,” Booth said “He seems to think it’s an interesting project.”

trees is valuable research, too, she said.

Meanwhile, Block will continue working on his project. In a few years, he says, his orchard should be producing lots of apples—more than he can possibly give away to friends. At that point, he hopes to sell them to the co-op so that everyone can enjoy an organic, homegrown Honeycrisp.

Ray Block has planted apple trees near Lake Superior to provide apples to family, friends and community as well as to act as a firebreak. Chickens help control insects and weeds. | JOAN FARNAM

By Joan Farnam Ray Block has a vision for the North Shore. He’d like to see an apple orchard on every property along Lake Superior producing lots of wonderful apples and doubling as firebreaks. It’s a novel concept, and Block is quite determined to make it work. He’s planted 180 dwarf apple trees on his parents’ property close to Lake Superior, and the trees are thriving. The varieties he’s growing are mouthwatering to apple lovers: Honeycrisp, Sweet 16, Zestar, Fireside, Kerr and Chestnut Crab. Many of them are fruiting this year, and he hopes to harvest more than the 100 pounds he produced last year.

Block protects the trees with a good deer fence, mulches them with cedar mulch, installed chickens in the enclosure to control weeds and insects and irrigates them regularly with a drip irrigation system. He’s using a new growing technique as well. The trees are planted close together and trained to grow on fences in a spindle/fruiting wall system. When mature, they will present a solid wall of hydrated green to approaching wildfire, he said. The fruiting wall system also makes them much easier to pick as well as encourages the trees to produce fruit earlier. Block said he got the idea when the family decided that the dying birch and poplar trees around the property were a fire hazard and cut them down. “I figured that the best way to protect the

Timber Framing Blossoms in Cook County By Stephen W. Surbaugh From one end of Cook County to the other examples of timber frame buildings continue to grow. It seems like nearly every year one or more new timber frames appear in a public space. These works of art are modern interpretations of an old way of building that dates back to Egypt in 2000 B.C. The last year alone has brought the outdoor classroom/picnic pavilion at Birch Grove, a traditional Scandinavian frame cover for a fishing boat at the North Shore Commercial Fishing Museum, both in Tofte, and the meeting room at the new Cook County Whole Foods Co-op. Much of the local interest in timber framing started when Bob Martin and Virginia Danfelt of Hovland, owners and operators of Lake Superior Timber Framing, set out to build a house in the 1980s. “At the time, we were looking at the construction of the post and beam buildings at the fort in Grand Portage and thinking about going that way,” said Bob Martin. Then they discovered timber framing, which, unlike post-and-beam, uses no mechanical fasteners. Martin said the definition of timber framing is, “The fabrication of the structure of a building using timbers and traditional mortise and tenon wood-to-wood joinery.” “Timber framing in its modern iteration really began its revival right around the time we were thinking about building,” Martin said. But there were no models or real examples of this modern way of timber framing in Cook County. Then as now, the best way to learn about timber framing is to take a course or a workshop. Today North House Folk School hosts and teaches large and small timber frame workshops for people from around the country. But when Martin and Danfelt started out, there was no North House. Instead, they found a course in Michigan. They returned home to build their workshop, attended a second course and built their house. “We kept good track of our time and realized we could bid the frames out and make a living doing this.” A few decades and 30-35 frames later they have become a fixture in the timber framing community. “Timber framing has been part of North House since the beginning of our curriculum,” said Greg Wright, executive director of North House Folk School, “Peter Henrikson and Tom Healy were two of our founding instructors. Peter and Tom were very excited about making things with wood and building timber frames.” Today it is easy to see that not only has timber framing influ-

16 NORTH SHORE HWY 61 SEPTEMBER 2013

Many budding builders learned timber framing at the North House Folk School. | DAVID GRINSTEAD & NHFS enced the curriculum at North House but also the very fabric of the campus itself. “The timbered entries to the red and blue buildings, the blacksmith shop, the fish house, and the outdoor oven are all made using traditional timber frame construction,” pointed out Greg. “Not only are these timber frames part of the physical fabric of campus, but interwoven in them is the fact that they were built by hundreds of our students.” Wright, Martin and Danfelt say there are easily 100 timber frames throughout the county. These were built by North House students, local contractors, self-builders and contractors from near and far. Martin and Danfelt say people choose timber framing not only for the aesthetic appeal but also for sustainability and energy efficiency. “When combining a timber frame with structural insulated panels, you almost cannot beat that in terms of energy efficiency,” said Martin. When asked how timber frames stack up to other methods of construction cost-wise, Martin cautioned that “the level of detail determines the end result and of course the cost. In general a good quality timber frame in our area is comparable in price to a good quality custom built home.” Howard Hedstrom, president of Hedstrom Lumber Co., said that, “The production of timbers has steadily become part of our business over the last decade. In a sense we have developed a partnership with North House to provide them with the timbers for their classes.” Hedstrom also said that students who graduate from the timber-framing classes often purchase more timbers later for their own buildings. This local market is something that Hedstrom Lumber can “easily excel at,” Hedstrom said.

Volunteer To Make A Difference By Beth Probst

Tracy Benson

Grand Marais native Tracy Benson loves the area but knows it wouldn’t be the unique place it is without strong, regional nonprofits. “This whole town runs on volunteer-ism. It is an example set by our parents and organizations like the Lion’s Club and the Hospital Auxiliary.” she says. “Our community wouldn’t be as successful without everyone pitching in.” It should come as no surprise then, that when asked to serve as a board member of the Cook County Community Fund, Benson was quick to say yes. “It was exciting to join an organization that is focused on the residents of Cook County and making things better for everyone.” The Fund, which is an affiliate of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation, was founded 10-year ago this fall by a group of like-minded citizens wanting to create a permanent vehicle of giving for the area. Today, the family of funds sits at over $425,000 and continues to grow. Each May, nonprofits can apply for grants from a variety of funds that have been established through estate or other gifts. To date, this equals 58 grants totaling $63,897, with 32 nonprofits receiving grants. As a board member, Benson spends her time educating people about the Fund and how they can support it, with a special focus on former alum of Cook County High School. “There are a lot of people out there that have not been able to return to Grand Marais but would love to support or recognize the community they loved so much growing up,” Benson explains. Right now, she’s slowly working on building awareness about the many ways folks can give to the Cook County Community Fund.

Benson says knowing you can make a difference in a community the size of Cook County is just one of the many things that makes this area so great. “There is just so much going on for a small town. And, if you decide you want to pursue an interest or volunteer, you can just show up and get involved.” For Benson, this means hosting a weekly radio show on WTIP, just one of the many organizations that has established an endowment fund with the Cook County Community Fund, along with volunteering with other organizations. As for why she donates so much of her time to helping others, she believes it is a win-win. “I love interacting with people. This opportunity allows me to interact with people I’ve known my entire life but also to meet and get to know new people as well.” If you are interested in learning more about how you can get involved with the Cook County Community Fund, join us for our 10th Anniversary Celebration on October 8th, 5-7PM at the Johnson Heritage Post. Preparing for College By Breana Roy

Do your research:

Heading off to college can be a scary and exciting adventure. You’ll experience new things and gain a new independence. You’ll gain knowledge in and out of the classroom. You’ll make new friends, deal with roommate drama and learn the value of a dollar when ordering fast food. Here’s a few tips to help you survive your first year. Remember to have fun and don’t forget to call home: Your friends and family miss you.

Print a checklist when packing: There are numerous sites that provide checklists for all your college needs away from home—www.collegepackinglist.com is a great one. Your list is going to be much more extensive than the typical notebooks and pencils school list, although those are definitely important too.

Most colleges offer numerous services that can be quite helpful, such as study abroad options, free tutoring and health services, a career services center, an extensive library with laptop, movie and camera rentals and much more. Not to mention all the extracurricular clubs and events. Each college varies, so do your research and explore.

Be prepared: There’s nothing more intimidating than searching campus for a classroom the first day of classes, so print out a schedule of your classes ahead of time. Include the title of the class, room number and professor. Don’t be afraid to carry a map with you if necessary; you won’t be the only freshman with one. It might also be helpful to find your classes ahead of time so you don’t get lost. Don’t arrive late on your first day.

Get to know your professors: This isn’t high school. Most professors won’t make an effort to get to know every individual student, so you must make the first move. Introduce yourself after class or drop by their office. Many professors encourage this.

Ask questions: Depending on the course, some classes may push your comfort zone. Take lots of notes. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or stop by the professor’s office for help. Another option is to get a tutor. Almost all colleges have a student help or academic success center with free tutoring at your disposal. Also, get to know a fellow classmate and help each other out. Swap notes and schedule study sessions before tests.

College student perks: Being a broke college student has its advantages. Many restaurants and stores give students a discount with a valid student ID. Check www.studentadvantage.com for a list of places.
