The New Year marks a pair of significant milestones for Northern Wilds. As we enter our 10th year of publication, we are introducing a new, improved, monthly edition of Northern Wilds magazine. Our staff has worked tirelessly for the last three months to redesign the magazine you are presently reading. Most noticeably, we’ve gone to a larger format, staple-bound with full bleeds. This means our photography and advertising will be larger and more colorful. As you page through the issue, you’ll notice we’ve redesigned our pages. Credit for the new design goes to Kyle Sobanja of Grand Marais, who worked closely with graphic designer Katie Viren on the new look. Kyle is a master of balance and bases his page design on a mathematical formula. We think you’ll like his style. Katie, with the assistance of Amber, has done an extraordinary job of putting together the many pieces that comprise this issue. As you read this issue, you’ll see we’ve added some new content that better reflects today’s North Shore. Our opening section, Along the Shore, offers news and tidbits from the many communities along the lake. The NorthShore ArtScene covers the happenings and art gossip for the arts community on both sides of the border. For foodies, we’ve added a new food and dining column. In the center of the publication, you’ll find a monthly pull-out calendar of events. We’ll continue to have feature stories covering activities, people and places. New in this issue is our editorial assistant and dog musher Erin Altemus, who wrote a feature about the dog races scheduled to occur in our region this winter. Thunder Bay outdoor writer Gord Ellis’ column, Northern Trails, is found in our Outdoors section. A new addition to Outdoors is the Fishing Hole, which features a depth map for one of the thousands of lakes in the Northern Wilds. Finishing out the issue is Elle Andra-Warner’s

French River Fish Hatchery: Fix It or Close it? FRENCH RIVER—The French River Cold Water Fish Hatchery, located near the mouth of the French River on Scenic Hwy. 61, is in need of significant rehabilitation, according to a recently completed study of the facility conducted by HDR, Inc., an engineering and consulting firm out of Illinois. The hatchery, nearly 40 years old, currently rears steelhead and Kamloop strains of rainbow trout to stock along the North Shore of Lake Superior and its tributaries. It will require $7.6 million in updates in order to continue functioning in its current capacity, the study concludes. One major issue addressed in the study was the facility’s above-average energy use, due to the need to pump and heat water from Lake Superior for use in the hatchery. The study says the renovation would reduce the facility’s energy use, bringing it more in line with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resource’s efforts toward energy conservation and efficiency. The updates would also extend the life of the hatchery by 25 years, allowing it to continue to stock rainbow trout along the North Shore in the long-term. At the moment, it remains unclear whether the renovation will move forward. Closing the facility remains an option, as a source of funding for renovation has yet to be identified, DNR officials say. “Nobody knows which direction we are going yet,” said Don Schreiner, DNR Lake Superior area fisheries supervisor, calling
it a major decision for the program. “The Kamloops fishery would be affected most [by a closure],” he added. The Kamloops population is very much dependent on the hatchery, he said. “The DNR recognizes that rainbow trout are important to anglers and contribute to the economic health of the North Shore,” said Tim Goeman, acting fisheries chief for the Minnesota DNR, in a letter to Minnesota anglers. “The DNR remains committed to maintaining rainbow trout stocking (both steelhead and Kamloops) at levels described in the 2006 Lake Superior Management plan.” In the letter, he invited local angling organizations to share their questions or concerns regarding the study in a continuing discussion on the future of the hatchery. According to a study of trout angling in Minnesota conducted by the University of Minnesota, trout anglers fishing Lake Superior and its tributaries contributed $261,766 through the purchase of trout stamps in 2013. Because of the critical role the French River Hatchery plays in providing a rainbow trout fishery on the North Shore, a closure of this facility would not only mean a loss of income for the DNR, as the study suggests, but a decrease in angling opportunities on the shores of Lake Superior. In coming months, the results of the studies will be analyzed and public input will be gathered, leading to a final decision.—Kate Jackson

Lutsen Mountains— Speedy Lift Adds Ski Time LUTSEN—This fall, Lutsen Mountains started construction on the most asked-for upgrade to the ski area—a speedy lift. Heavylift helicopters, bulldozers, cranes and other heavy machinery worked in early October to install a new Leitner-Poma six-passenger, high-speed chairlift on Moose Mountain.
Skiers can make use of the extra time on the slopes by exploring two new runs on the North Face of Moose Mountain. Located along the cliff line, the runs will join The Plunge as the steepest groomed runs in Mid-America. Intended for experts, they navigate up to a 90-percent grade.
“The Caribou Express 6-seater will whisk riders to the top of Moose Mountain in just 3.5 minutes,” says Melissa Dressely of Lutsen Mountains.
“While only about 5 percent of our visitors will ride these trails, there is a mystique about a mountain that exceeds your ability,” says Lutsen Mountains marketing manager Jim Vick. “This is the stuff of legend. It sets goals for a future trip. And for those who successfully navigate the run, it provides stories for a lifetime.” —Steve Surbaugh
This decrease in lift time and increase in lift capacity has the potential to cut lift time for skiers by two-thirds and dramatically increase the number of runs they can pack into a day. Skiers at Lutsen Mountains are spending more time skiing thanks to a new lift. | LUTSEN MOUNTAIN

Wii games, and board games after school, on weekends, or whenever the Y is open. The Kid’s Club and Teen Space are included with family memberships. “My goal is for every kid in Cook County to have a membership, even if I have to knock on doors and sign them up myself,” Marshall said. “We will work with families individually and won’t turn anyone away for lack of funds.”

GRAND MARAIS—Emily Marshall, Cook County Community YMCA executive director, overflows with enthusiasm for the new facility, which is set to open in early January. There will be something for everyone regardless of age or physical ability, Marshall says. A late November tour of the building-in-progress showed work yet to be done, but with some imagination, prospective members could see themselves toning muscles on the weight machines, huffing their way around the indoor track and swimming laps in the four-lane pool. This new opportunity to get moving comes on the heels of a national push to-
For adults, most group fitness programs (such as Zumba and yoga) are included as a part of their membership. Some special seven-week sessions of classes such as gymnastics, swim lessons or dance, are extra ($34 for the seven-week program for YMCA members, and $66 for community residents who would like to take advantage of these YMCA offerings). wards obesity awareness and an emphasis on healthy living.
• A special lift elevator makes all floors of the building accessible.
The biggest challenge, Marshall says, has been marketing the YMCA to a county spread out over a large geographical area. She says she wants everyone to feel welcome, and points out that the space is designed for this:
The focus of the YMCA is not only on healthy living, Marshall says, but also on youth development. With this in mind, she says, a parent can hand off their child to the Kid’s Club, where he or she can participate in board games, surf the play structures or retreat to a reading loft. A parent, Marshall says, can exercise worry-free: All the Kid’s Club attendants will be certified in CPR and first aid as well as child care.
• The pool has a “zero depth entry” on one side, which allows someone in a wheel chair to access the water, or a parent with a child to walk in at a shallow depth • There are cardio machines designed for the fitness gurus and also for the elderly.
Teens will have their own space where they can play foosball, air hockey, pool,
Marshall emphasized that the Cook County Community YMCA is surrounded by amenities such as the curling rink, little league field, a skating rink, Pincushion Mountain ski trails, outdoor tennis courts and hiking trails. If you have health insurance that pays you an incentive to work out a certain number of times per week, the YMCA will check you off for doing indoor activities as well as outdoor activities. With just a few days until opening, Marshall says she has much to be excited about: “There’s a sense of belonging at the Y, and I enjoy helping people connect to each other, groups and the broader community as we all work together to grow personally, become better leaders and supporters, and, of course, have fun!” —Erin Altemus
A Celestial Tonic for Long Winter Nights THUNDER BAY—Winter is looking up at the Fort William Historical Park, where visitors can spend the evening stargazing at the David Thompson Astronomical Observatory. Located adjacent to the park’s Visitor Centre, the observatory offers live viewing of the stars, planets, moons and nebulas on clear nights through one of the largest telescopes in central Canada. On cloudy nights, the observatory features a Star Walk Experience, where visitors view cataloged images of the night sky. And even if it is cloudy in Thunder Bay, skies may be clear somewhere else. The observatory has interactive connections with giant telescopes in Chile and the Canary Islands. Next to the observatory dome sits an astronomical Discovery Centre, where visitors can view meteorites, historical navigational tools and telescopes. The Discovery Centre has astronomy software and projection systems for viewing images, including recent celestial activity. The observatory is open year-round Thursday through Saturday. Marina Use On the Rise SILVER BAY—Guest dockage at the Silver Bay Marina was up 60 percent in 2013 over the previous year, perhaps due to new marketing efforts, marina managers report. “We went to the Minneapolis Boat Show for the first time (in 2013),” said marina manager Jeremy Kasapidis. “A lot of people at the show were interested in the marina.” This year, Kasapidis plans to attend sport shows in Minneapolis and Duluth to promote the marina to Minnesota and Wisconsin boaters. Visiting boaters either cruise along the North Shore or cross over from Bayfield and the Apostle Islands in Wisconsin. The marina also receives a lot of use from anglers who launch trailered
boats there. The marina is also attracting new events. Last year it hosted 18 boats for five days in August for the Great Lakes Cruising Club’s Western Lake Superior Rally, which will return this year. On the same weekend, six boats competed in the first annual Bayfield to Silver Bay medium-distance sailing race held by the Wayzata Yacht Club. A couple of longstanding events, which did well in 2013, are slated to return next summer. The Salmon Classic, which sold nearly 250 tickets in 2013, will be back in July. So will the annual boat lighting held the Saturday evening of the Bay Days weekend. Boats are lighted with Christmas lights and the docks are opened to public so people can visit the boats.
Ancient Tool Makers BOUNDARY WATERS—Today, Knife Lake on the U.S./Canada border in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and Quetico Provincial Park is located in one of Minnesota’s most remote corners. However, in October, St. Cloud State University associate professor, Mark Muñiz, told the St Cloud Times that test results for soil taken from the Minnesota side of Knife Lake supported Muñiz’s theory that prehistoric people were living on Knife Lake thousands of years earlier than previously thought. Muñiz had theorized that prehistoric people had settled on Knife Lake between 11,000 - 12,500 years ago, living on the edges of receding glaciers. The soil test results indicated that people may have been living on Knife Lake more than 16,000 years ago. “That opens the door wide for it to be one of the oldest sites in Minnesota,” Muñiz told the St. Cloud Times. Previously, archaeologists believed prehistoric peoples first settled in southern
Minnesota because glaciers would have left northern Minnesota uninhabitable. Archaeologists have long been interested in the prehistoric significance of Knife Lake because it’s the only location in the near vicinity where prehistoric people could gather the siltstone necessary to make knives, spears, scrapers, and other important tools. According to a Minnesota Archaeological Society publication, the 1999 blowdown and subsequent prescribed burns cleared the area of its heavy undergrowth, giving archaeologists a unique opportunity to survey the area for prehistoric evidence. In 2009, Muñiz participated in an interagency archaeological survey on Knife Lake along with archaeologists from the U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, Minnesota DNR and National Register. Muñiz told the St. Cloud Times that his next step is to secure additional grant funding so he can continue testing soil samples and gather more evidence to support his theory. —Ada Igoe

In Memoriam Pottery artist Kristi Downing passed away Dec. 5. Her KKD Pottery Studio was located on Lake Superior’s shore at Hut Point, about 15 miles east of Grand Marais. Kate Watson, who took a raku pottery class there, took the left photo of Kristi firing pottery in 2012. Kate recalls at the start of the class, Kristi shared the following quote from famous potter Paul Soldner: “In the spirit of raku, there is a necessity to embrace the element of surprise. There can be no fear of losing what was once planned and there must be an urge to grow along with the discovery of the un-
known. In the spirit of raku: make no demands, expect nothing, follow no absolute plan, be secure in change, learn to accept another solution and finally to gamble on your intuition.” Kristi was an avid supporter of the North House Folk School where she was an instructor. A Kristi Downing Memorial Fund is being developed at North House Folk School. For more information and to donate to the fund, contact North House at 218-387-9762 or email info@northhouse.org. A celebration of her life will be held at her studio on her birthday, Aug. 23.

Great Trails, Few Riders KAKABEKA FALLS--Hop on a sled at Kakabeka Falls and you can ride all the way to Manitoba on a groomed trail system. But most riders prefer to explore the trails they cover in a day. Day-trippers will find plenty to discover along the way. “Our scenery is the best in the world,” says Adrian Tessier, who grooms the route for Thunder Bay Adventure Trails. “If you encounter 15 sleds along the way, it’s a busy weekend.”
Tessier and three other groomers are responsible for 325 kilometers of trails. They spend up to 60 hours per week on the groomer. One route alone takes 22 hours to completely groom.
der, the route from Kakabeka to Atikokan passes through Shabaqua Corners and Shebandowan. A new spur leads southward through the Nolalu area to Silver Mountain Station.
“Our trails are noticeably smoother and wider than groomed trails in Minnesota,” Tessier says.
From Silver Mountain Station, you can follow the ungroomed Pardee Line all the way to Gunflint Lake on the Minnesota border. The route is a historic rail line that passes through wild country. Unfortunately, Canadians cannot cross the border at Gunflint Lake without prior permission

After Dec. 1, they are $260, or $170 if your machine is a 199 model or older. A 7-day pass is $125 and $75 for a threeday pass. You can ride the trails for free on the Family Day Weekend beginning Feb. 15. For more information, log on to the North of Superior Snowmobile Association at nossasnowmobling.com.—Shawn Perich

Mush Madness:
A Guide for Spectators by Erin Altemus
T
he start of a sled dog race is a flurry of action: hundreds of dogs and their mushers all packed into a parking lot together. Booties, sleds, harnesses, piles of winter gear, sled runners, paw cream, bags of dog kibble, blocks of raw meat, and gangline are everywhere. Steamy breath rises in wisps from every mouth and snout around. Howls, whines, barks and growls start at a low hum and eventually erupt into a pandemonium by the time the race gets under way. For some, seeing this once will be a tick on the bucket list; for others, it’s a Northland tradition, where mushing is both a hobby and a celebration of history. If you have never been to a sled dog race, there are several along the North Shore throughout the winter. Here’s what you can expect: Mushers will park their dog trucks in organized lines several hours before the race starts. If you like dogs and have burning questions about what they eat, how long they run, and what makes them stop, this is the time to ask. Mushers will “drop” their dogs so you can meet them. Before approaching dogs, especially with children, ask their musher if the dogs are okay to pet. Some dogs want to socialize with you; others do not. After the “meet and greet,” mushers will begin readying their gear for the race. Some dogs will go back in their boxes during this time for a little break from the chaos. Once the sleds are lined up and the start time approaches, dogs will come back out of their boxes. Mushers do a last check to make sure they have everything on their required gear list (this usually includes a sleeping bag, first aid kit, map, ax, flashlight, cable cutters, knife, food for dogs, and food for the musher). Some dogs will get booties, all dogs get harnesses, and 10 minutes before the first team leaves the chute, handlers move dogs up to the gangline and snap them in place. Somehow every dog in the parking lot knows when the first team is ready. Volunteers come to take the first team toward the chute. From 8 to 10 volunteers will hold the gangline and make sure the dogs don’t run away with the musher before it’s their time. As the teams line up to go, watch where you are walking. A team on the move like this is hard to stop. Stake out a spot along the starting chute and watch the action from there. The team must wait in the chute until given the signal to go. The dogs do not like to wait; they were not bred for patience. Some will chew on the gangline or their neighbor, much to their musher’s dismay. They heave at the gangline, leap into the air, bark and scream. They want nothing more than to run. The musher will often give everyone a pat on the head and say some encouraging words to his or her lead dogs. And then it’s time: “Five, Four, Three, Two, One!” The crowd helps with the fianl countdown. And with that the team of screaming dogs turns silent, running toward the open trail ahead.

Learn the Lingo DROP: This can mean two things: First, a musher will “drop” their dogs from the dog truck every few hours so the dogs can pee on the truck tires or eliminate as needed. Second, a musher will “drop” a dog during the race that may be fatigued or injured. This means that dog will be cared for by the musher’s handler and no longer allowed to race.
sometimes blankets or wood chips.
GEE/HAW: The basic terms for right and left.
TEAM DOGS: All the dogs in between point and wheel.
DOG TRUCK: Dog trucks come in all shapes and sizes. Most frequently you will see a dog box on top of the pick-up bed or on a flat-bed truck. These can sometimes hold 30 dogs. Some mushers have their dog box on a trailer. Occasionally, mushers travel incognito and have their dogs all lumped together inside a van. Dog boxes are usually filled with straw or
LEAD DOGS: Usually two dogs, but sometimes one, will lead the team, following the musher’s commands to go gee or haw. They must also maintain the pace the musher wants to set, and keep the gangline taut so dogs don’t get tangled.
HANDLER: The person or people who drive the truck from checkpoint to checkpoint during the race. They assist with dog care—feeding, paw care, muscle rubs, putting on booties and dog jackets, and generally taking over so the musher can take care of themselves during the short breaks between race legs.
NORTHERN WILDS
MUSH: This comes from the French word “marche,” which means to march. Mushers rarely use the term to command the dogs. “Hike!” or “Let’s go!” or “Ahead!” are more commonly used.
POINT DOGS: These dogs are right behind the lead dogs and sometimes help the lead dogs maintain speed or make
a correct turn. Often the point dogs are lead dogs just taking a break from the lead position, which brings considerable pressure and responsibility. WHEEL DOGS: These dogs run just in front of the sled.
Armchair Mushing
ASK TO PET THE DOGS: Most, but not all, of the dogs are spectator friendly.
If you can’t make it to the race events, but you find the race drama gripping, you can often follow the race events online. The Gichigami Express mushers will wear tracking devices, allowing at-home spectators to watch their progress online. Both the Gichigami and Beargrease will do Facebook updates throughout the race that will include photos, video and and times.
BRING YOUR CAMERA: Everyone will want to see your fabulous photos of running dogs, snowy trails and frosty mushers!
Spectator Do’s DRESS WARM: While it’s possible to have a North Shore warm-up in January, it’s statistically more likely that temps could be below zero. Layer up. Use hand and toe warmers. BRING SNACKS: A thermos of hot cocoa and pockets full of granola bars will help keep you toasty.
Spectator Don’ts DON'T BRING YOUR POOCH: While a dog race might appear to be a dog-friendly event, pet dogs are a distraction to sled dogs, and no one wants an unfriendly dog encounter. DON’T FEED THE ANIMALS: While most sled dogs will eat anything you give them, their musher-owners would rather they didn’t. Sled dogs have very specific diets and eating something out of their ordinary could lead to illness during the race. Assistant editor Erin Altemus is an avid dog musher and is competing in the Beargrease Mid-Distance Race.

Stick to basic colors for outdoor clothes. Black snowpants can be passed down from one kid to the next, regardless of gender. | ERIC CHANDLER

2 inches of material into the hem of jackets and pants. This allows the garment to be extended by letting out the grow seams. Some even have the grow seams built into the waist to allow the garment to stretch there. She said this should allow more than one season’s worth of wear in a garment.
Do you have kids? Me, too. Do you live up here in the Northern Wilds? Yeah, I hear you. Sometimes it feels like you’re equipping an army. Winter poses unique gear challenges. We’ve been outfitting our little crew for a decade. They’re not that little anymore. I just took hand-me-down ski boots from my son, so we might be on the other side of the hill. Did we learn anything from outfitting our kids for Duluth winters? When I say “we,” I am including my wife Shelley. Together we came up with some tips. Winter clothes for kids are heavy duty. Your kids will outgrow them, not wear them out. If you have multiple children, the clothes are going to get handed down. So, one of Shelley’s tips was to buy clothes with neutral colors. Thing One is a boy and Thing Two is a girl. We bought snow pants that were black. No camo or pink to get passed on to the wrong target audience. If not black, then primary solid colors like blue or red work. Shelley told me that she tries to buy clothes and gear at the end of the season. Clearance sales at the end of the winter can mean good deals. But use caution: You have to predict how big your growing urchins will be next winter. Good luck. Lately, I buy my boy new longer pants at each full moon. That’s two tips. Shelley shrugged her shoulders and went on to more important

During the next 18 years, Dad may outgrow one size. His daughter on the other hand… | ERIC CHANDLER tasks than helping this writer. I struggled to add a third item to my Top Three Tips list. I called for reinforcements. I asked Alane Davis of Ski Hut what her tips were. She’s the clothing manager for this well-known Duluth shop. Her first tip was to find clothes that have a good waterproof/breathability score. She said the waterproof rating is more important for kids than breathability. Davis suggested at least an 8,000 mm or 8K rated item since kids “tend to sit in the snow.” I have to agree since my kids tend to roll in the snow like happy dogs. Davis also said some winter garments for children have grow seams. Good manufacturers will often build an extra 1.5 to
NORTHERN WILDS
Lastly, Davis recommended buying children’s clothing from a manufacturer that also makes winter gear for adults. She listed several advantages to doing this. Reputable manufacturers of adult gear are apt to make good stuff for kids. If there are problems, these manufacturers have good warranty coverage. And technical advances that are made for adults will flow to the kid products. I also got help from Heather Maruska, the buyer and visual merchandiser for Trailfitters, “Duluth’s Outdoor Store.” She immediately mentioned a product called the Patagonia Baby Synchilla Cardigan. It’s available in sizes from infant to 4T. It has spandex in the cuffs and hood openings to keep out the draft from Old Man Winter. It even has a hand-me-down label so the new owner can make it their own. It works as an outer layer in the spring and fall and works as a good synthetic inner layer in the heart of winter. But synthetics aren’t everything in the world of layering. Smartwool socks for kids bring the old school material into the 21st century. Maruska says that Trailfitters
has a variety of these in stock for children. Wool insulates when wet, which is good since kids are bound to get some snow in their boots at some point. And she said they work as hand-me-downs as well. I hadn’t thought of that, even though I’m sure we handed down some burly winter socks in our family. Add wool socks to the list of things you can recycle. The last thing in Maruska’s Top Three was to get a kid carrier. She mentioned that Trailfitters has models from Deuter and Osprey. This will unlock the winter season for you and your kids. And it’s plenty useful all year round while the kids are small. I’ve carried kids cross country skiing with our kid carrier. I even watched the start of the John Beargrease Sled Dog Race with my daughter on my back. Little ones appreciate the lift and the view, even in winter. I struggled hard to find my own third tip. After talking to Davis and Maruska, I figured out what it is: Get help from the experts at your local shops. Davis said, “A good retailer has an educated staff who treats their clothing lines with the same level of expertise as they do the hard goods they sell.” Do me one favor: If you get help from the folks at your local shop, give the shop your business. Put your bucks into the local store and watch those dollars bounce around your neighborhood. Everybody wins. Especially your comfy kids rolling around in the snow of the Northern Wilds.

Harmonious Wail, a nationally celebrated group, has won many national awards. The band (Sims Delaney-Potthoff, tenor guitar, mandolin; Maggie Delaney-Potthoff, vocals, percussion and Jeff Weiss, bass) play an infectious blend of Continental jazz, swing and gypsy music. They will be at North House Jan. 11 for a first set concert, second set community dance starting at 7:30 p.m. Free swing dance lessons precede the event. For classical music lovers, the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra will perform “Who Killed Mozart?” in a “whodunit” musical mystery at the Thunder Bay Community Auditorium at 8 p.m. (EST) Jan. 23. Plein Air Painter Have you always lived in Cook County?
I’ve been in Cook County a little more than eight years. Before that, I was in Minneapolis studying painting with Joe Paquet a couple days a week for seven years. It was a full-on mentorship. I grew up in Rochester.
What projects are you currently working on?
My on-going project is the Superior Hiking Trail painting project. My goal is to hike the whole trail and do paintings of it on the way. I have almost all of Cook County hiked. I’ve probably done close to 100 miles of it. The whole thing is close to 300 miles. I started in the summer of 2011. I’m also going to do some studio pieces … larger indoor pieces from smaller outdoor paintings I did in the past.
What about your art continues to attract and fascinate you?
Being outside, I think, always kinds of fascinates me … discovering new painting locations, especially on the Superior Hiking Trail. It’s kind of inspiring to find different locations that are really amazing. Like I found a place along the Gooseberry River, up from the falls. I’d never been along the river there. It’s beautiful. I also like painting the Hovland Dock. It’s a Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi – the whole idea is that there is beauty in older, decrepit things. I just like old run-down stuff. There’s a beauty to it that attracts me. And the light effects on the lake can be pretty dramatic. It has some history, too.
Where can we see your work?
At Sivertson Gallery and the Grand Hill Gallery in St. Paul, and you can make an appointment to visit my studio at the Grand Marais Art Colony. You can email me at na-sherman@ hotmail.com.

EVENTS
Four Events Celebrate Dog Mushing Tradition The early arrival of winter snow was welcomed by dog mushers. Three sled dog races and one fun mushing event are scheduled for locations across the Northern Wilds. From the venerable John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon to the crazy Mush for a Cure, these events offer plenty of opportunities to watch or even join in on the fun.
Gichigami Express Sled Dog Race Jan. 3-6
Mushers will take off from Mineral Center in Grand Portage and follow the Otter Track road, cross the Arrowhead Trail and continue on the snowmobile trail toward the Gunflint Trail. The snowmobile trail has some sharp turns and steep hills, and with a fresh 12-dog team, mushers will struggle to stay upright on their sleds. With such a fiercely competitive bunch of teams, this will be an exciting race to watch—from the sidelines or even from home (this year the Gichigami will have live tracking online). The Gichigami Express race roster is full of mushing’s elite. Almost every team registered has won a race in recent years. For most of these mushers, this is the first race of the season. The stage-race format where teams run 60 miles each day and then have a full night’s rest is an attractive format for mushers, and makes for faster trail times. This kind of racing format is spectator and volunteer friendly as well. There are no midnight road crossings. The
directors of the Gichigami Express wanted to create a race that would highlight three of the communities in the area: Grand Marais, Grand Portage and the Gunflint Trail. This will be the second running of the Gichigami Express. For more details about the Gichigami Express, go to: www.gichigamiexpress.com
John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon Jan. 24-29
When the 30th running of the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon begins on Jan. 26, up to 600 dogs driven by 50 mushers will take off from Duluth East High School and run up the North Shore via the North Shore State Snowmobile Trail. There are two races, a 373-mile marathon and a 106-mile mid-distance race. Watching teams pass through any of the road crossings between Duluth and Two Harbors will be action-packed as the teams are still close together. At Highway 2, teams will rest from 2-4 hours and continue on toward Finland, running in the

Future sled dogs enjoying the snow. | MATT SCHMIDT dark. From this point on, teams spread out, the night gets colder, and the race is on. Monday morning, the first mid-distance teams will fly into the finish line in Tofte at the AmericInn. Over the course of two to three hours, the 30 mid-distance teams will finish. Most mushers will tell you their goal is to finish with “happy healthy dogs.” But a long night going up and down steep hills can make or break some teams. The emotion on a musher’s face will tell the story of their night. Dogs will eat a meal, receive a massage and take a long rest. Marathon teams will keep going for the next two days, stopping along the Sawbill Trail for a mandatory rest, then continue on to Devil Track Lake and up to Trail Center and beyond before turning around and making the long trek back to Duluth. It can be fun to see the teams at Trail Center, coming in and leaving, resting and eating. But be aware that these dogs need rest, and the mushers do too. Wednesday morning, the first marathon team will come running back into Duluth. Some years, even after 370 miles of running, the finish can be close. In 2011, Ryan Anderson finished first, one minute ahead of Nathan Schroeder, perhaps the closest margin in Beargrease history.

Exploring the Shore, One Meal at a Time Accessing my long-term memory is a constant struggle. Ask me to remember a movie I watched or a book recently read and you’ll likely receive a disappointing response. Despite my poor memory, if I catch an aroma of yellow onion, crisp green peppers and ham frying on a hot skillet, I can instantly recall the moment where I fell in love with my fiancé George. Thanks to his years of experience as a chef, he prepared a simple Denver omelet that was fluffy, delicate and perfect in execution. I remember leaning against the faded yellow wallpaper of my miniature one-bedroom apartment, watching George gently maneuver a spatula around the edge of the eggs. Now, omelets will forever be my comfort food. That Denver omelet initiated a fast-paced domino effect that, in seven months, led to our engagement and a move from our hometown of Fargo, N.D., to Minnesota’s North Shore. In Fargo, I spent years as a news anchor and reporter. My thirst for knowledge and constant search for new experiences paired well with George’s desire to trade in his chef’s hat to pursue a career with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. We’re permanent explorers with a passion for cooking, photography and most outdoor activities. Moving to the North Shore was a perfect fit.
eager to experience our new home and better understand why we moved from a bustling metro area of 200,000 people to a quiet town of less than 4,000. In between showing our guests dramatic views of Lake Superior or escorting them on trails surrounded by towering pines, we’ve made memories around the tables of the Coho Cafe & Bakery, The Rustic Inn Cafe, Our Place and Sven and Ole’s, to name a few. Just recalling the name of the famous Scandinavian pizzeria in Grand Marais, I immediately flash back to a crowded table packed with huge pizza pans and Parmesan cheese, our friends Jeremy and Roberta throwing back their heads in boisterous laughter at the conversation. And between the cutlery and numerous napkins, two pizza slices were perched on each of our plates in a satisfying, well-balanced medley of quality ingredients. Food memories are hard to forget. Think of how those everlasting memories made at our Arrowhead eateries are then spread throughout our state, our countries and our world. Each year, millions of people come to our region with the specific intention of experiencing what we have to offer: the beautiful
Amidst exploring the Superior Hiking Trail and awe-inspiring state parks, we’ve indulged in our fair share of the Northland’s cuisine, eager for our taste buds to relish new recipes and ingredients. With each comforting bite of a locally prepared meal, I feel a deeper connection to our region and the welcoming, down-to-earth individuals who choose to make Minnesota their home.

Starvation isn’t pretty. Along the North Shore we watched it play out daily. Soon, people began to ask why the DNR wasn’t attempting to feed the deer. DNR officials stubbornly resisted the public’s call for deer feeding, saying they couldn’t reach enough animals in the vastness of northern Minnesota to make a difference. Eventually, they relented and semi-trucks loaded with bags of feed rolled north. The feed may have made a difference in places where the deer were accessible, such as along the North Shore. I was surprised to learn one of my neighbors--a pragmatic, no-nonsense guy— was feeding the deer. “It’s better than watching them starve in my yard,” he said. The deep snow was even disastrous for moose. A forester friend who spent a lot of time in the woods located a number of moose that were essentially confined to small areas where they had trampled the snow so they could move around. Like the deer at the logging site, the moose were discovered by the neighborhood wolves. Unlike deer, healthy adult moose are capable of defending themselves against a predatory wolf pack. So the wolves made repeat visits to the moose, which weakened from a lack of food as the winter wore on. Eventually, they were able to make kills. My friend took me to one of the wolf kills shortly after it occurred. The sign in the snow was easy to read. In snow that was chest-deep on me, the moose had been confined to an area perhaps 100 feet in diameter. All the trees and brush were completely browsed. With no more food
available, the moose lacked the strength to move to another location. Finally having an advantage, the wolves moved in for the kill. Wildlife officials, then smug with an abundance of northeastern Minnesota moose, said the loss of snow-bound moose was insignificant to the overall moose population. Perhaps that was true, but for several years afterward I found moose bones nearly every time I went in the woods. At the time I was serious about moose shed-antler hunting, and had a market to sell moose skulls and leg bones. I found enough of the latter to cover the gasoline expense of my frequent forest excursions. By March, the relentless cold and snow had beaten down the most ardent winter lovers, not to mention the rest of us. On the first of May, five feet of snow still covered the ground. Along the Gunflint Trail, anglers went ice fishing on the general opener. You could still find snow and ice in shady places beneath the cedars and black spruce well into June. Deer were so few the following November that some hunters complained the DNR should have closed the hunting season. The following winter, 96-97, was harsh statewide. Once again, the whitetail population took a hit. Hunters across northern Minnesota experienced bucks-only seasons for a couple of years afterward. But the deer came back, as they always do. Within a few years, both whitetail and wolf populations had recovered. During the early 2000s, populations of both species reached record abundance.

Life Beyond the Powerline By Erin Altemus The phrase “living off the grid” conjures up images of remote bungalows in the wilderness. For some, this sounds idyllic—using solar and wind power to generate your electricity and wood to warm your home. In Cook County, living off the grid is a reality for many residents, and the reality isn’t an existence deprived of modern conveniences and technology. Exact numbers of off-grid residents are difficult to come by because of the number of seasonal home users. Brian Bennett, owner of Outback Solar, estimates there may be up to 50 households using solar in the Hovland area, and another 50 on each of the Sawbill, Gunflint and Caribou trails. For some of these folks, living off the grid hasn’t meant sacrifices—with enough solar power and a back-up generator, you can have all the amenities that the grid allows. For others, living off the grid has been more challenging. Sometimes living off the beaten path makes life more difficult than living without electricity. But those who live offgrid intentionally have one thing in common: They take pleasure in knowing they leave a smaller environmental footprint. Living off the grid means living without a connection to the traditional electrical system. Folks who live off-grid supply their own power. Many have solar panels. Some have wind, and almost everyone, at least in this area where there are cloudy months, has a generator. In Cook County, the electric lines just don’t go everywhere, so connecting to the grid isn’t always an option. Which is fine, if you dream of a simple and sustainable lifestyle. For Kim Falter and her husband, Shem, building an off-grid home that required little fossil fuel was their dream when they moved here in 1998. They bought 40 acres on Victory Lane.
“We were idealistic,” Kim Falter said. “We thought we could live out there and be completely self-sustainable.” After living in a trailer and tent for several years, they started building a cordwood timber frame. Then she became pregnant with her first child. “We were living in a 10-by-16 cabin, and air would blow in the cracks,” she said. Improvements came slowly. By 2005, they had solar lights, a propane fridge and an Amish wood cook stove. They have added on, and though both Kim and Shem work, a lot, she says, they are self-sustainable in many ways. “Our impact on the planet has to be less.” For the Falters, the challenges have been related more to their remoteness. “Living without electricity is no problem,” she said. “But our road continues to be a challenge.” Falter grew up in a city between her two sets of grandparents, and there was always a flurry of activity. But now she lives in a place where no one wants to drive their road. “But,” she said, “the kids have land.” They can ride bikes and explore, and she doesn’t have to worry about the traffic. She also loves her large garden. “I have a peace of mind knowing we aren’t burning up non-renewable resources. But nothing’s perfect. Our system uses batteries,” she said. When asked about the biggest challenge of living off grid, Falter said that having small children and not having amenities was difficult: “And it costs more.... Environmentally sound construction materials are expensive and more time-consuming to install.” When Don and Gerry Grant started building their retirement home off County Road 7 in 2006, they decided not to connect to the grid, partly for financial reasons. “It would have cost $20,000 to run the line from the road to our house,” Don said. “And there’s no incentive to be grid-tied.
The Falter’s off-grid home they built from environmentally friendly materials. | KIM FALTER The meter fee alone is $43 if you have Arrowhead Electric.” Some who have solar energy are “gridtied.” meaning they can receive traditional electricity as a back-up if their solar panels aren’t kicking out enough power. The Grants have a wealth of knowledge about alternative energy. Don Grant serves on the board of the Cook County Local Energy Project and operates a business called North Shore Sustainable Energy, LLC. He has helped with several large-scale projects in the area, including the solar hot water project at the campground and the photovoltaic system at the golf course. The Grants participated heavily in the design of their energy system. The Grants have many of the modern appliances that everyone else has. But they have had to make small lifestyle changes: “We vacuum and run the dishwasher on sunny days,” Gerry Grant explained. They enjoy being aware of their energy usage and
Don and Gerry Grant in front of their off-grid home and solar panel array. | ERIN ALTEMUS say that friends who visit are often made aware of this as well. Their advice to anyone wanting to live off grid? “Really try to figure out how much you’re willing to put up with inconvenience. And try to figure out your electrical load,” Don Grant said. While living off the grid can mean inconvenience, there is also a peace of mind that comes with knowing you don’t have to rely on the power line.

BUCK’S
The Worst Winter Ever by Shawn Perich State wildlife officials say northern Minnesota whitetails may be in for a tough winter. Some locations along the North Shore have already received over three feet of snow. When it gets that deep, the deer have to ‘plow’ their way through the snow, sapping precious energy and increasing their vulnerability to predators such as wolves. When it hasn’t been snowing December temperatures across the north have often been below zero—yet another climatic challenge for deer. It’s been a while since we’ve seen a December like this one, which got me thinking about northeastern Minnesota’s brutal winter of 1995-96. Deep snow arrived early and subsequently stayed late. We had just moved into a country home with paltry insulation, draft, single-pane windows and a wood furnace for heat. We had about two cords of firewood on hand when we moved in. By January, I was out back, wading through snow over my waist and cutting down dead popples to feed the furnace. I could go on about the trials and tribula-
tions we faced in our new home that winter, but we were inside and relatively warm. For wildlife it was another matter. The snow kept piling up and between snowfalls the temperatures plunged far below zero. I recall back-to-back January blizzards that dumped more than 18 inches of snow. Also that month, my backyard thermometer bottomed out at minus 40 more than once. In either January or February, I heard about a North Shore logging job where deer gathered to feed on the tops of downed birch trees. Two or three dozen whitetails hung around the harvest area, because the heavy equipment packed down the snow, creating a de facto deer yard. Then they were discovered by a pack of wolves. Every night, the wolves would run one of the deer into the deep snow beyond the site and kill it. Before long, the wolves wiped out all of the deer. Surplus killing—taking more prey than they can eat—is something wolves may do in deep-snow years. I heard later from a biologist friend that some folks in DNR
Deep snow can devastate deer populations. | SANDY UPDYKE Wildlife, inexperienced with wolves and northern winters—were surprised at how much surplus killing occurred that winter. It’s unlikely many of the wolf-killed deer would have survived the winter, anyway.
The drive was dotted with deer tracks and you could see where they climbed the bank to reach any available browse, regardless of the tree species. Even on conifers like white spruce and balsam the branches were chewed back to stubs as thick as my thumb by the starving animals.
I remember walking along the plowed drive leading to some Lake Superior cabins. The snow banks were higher than my head.

Walleye Work: The DNR completed the first of three assessments on the lake in 2011, prescribed by a 2010 lake management plan. The assessments will be used to determine whether walleye stocking in this lake should be resumed (it was most recently stocked with 440,000 walleye fry in 2009). Subsequent assessments are scheduled for 2014 and 2017. In the 2011 assessment, the walleye gill net catch did not meet the DNR’s long-range goal, though the catch was above average for the lake classification and was similar to catches seen in the lake since 1992. And the strongest year class of walleye (2010) was apparently produced nat-

Something about smallies: The smallmouth bass catches in the 2011 assessment were low, just as they had been during the previous assessment in 2008. Only three smallmouth were collected, but two of those were in the 15- to 19-inch range. Data suggests the smallmouth population peaked in the 1990s, but despite the low numbers collected in gill nets and trap nets, (bass are difficult to catch in

Vitals: Caribou is 728 acres, with 10.4 miles of shoreline. It is 30 feet deep at its deepest and has a mean depth of 13 feet. The oddly-shaped lake, with a large peninsula at its center, generally drops off sharply around the entire shoreline. There’s a fairly shallow outlet to Caribou Creek, and the connecting 90-acre Bigsby Lake, to the northeast, is actually fairly shallow, with a maximum depth of four feet.
Pursuing pike: The 2011 DNR survey turned up lots of younger pike, with no fish older than the four-year mark collected. The DNR’s catch and size goals were met during the survey, and the growth rates have been average or better for the area, with three-year-old pike on average reaching a length of 20.5 inches by the end of their third year. Only one fish in the 25- to 29-inch range was collected.

Why I Love Thunder Bay Thunder Bay is my home. It has been for most of my life. It is also where I’ve chosen to work and raise a family. As someone who makes a living sharing the outdoors experience, it is hard to imagine a better place to be. In fact, I’m pretty sure there is no better place to be. The reasons that Thunder Bay is an awesome place for the outdoors enthusiast are many and varied. For me, the two big hooks are the access to world-class fishing and incredible hunting opportunities. Thunder Bay is situated at the top of the greatest fresh water lake in the world: Lake Superior. The inland ocean is cold, deep and relatively healthy by world standards. The fishery is diverse, with all sorts of fantastic angling options. For many years, the world-record lake trout was from Lake Superior, and the big lake remains a tremendous place to catch these ancient fish. However, introduced sport fish such as the chinook salmon and steelhead have really become the glamour species for most anglers. Growing up in Thunder Bay, I used to fish for spring-run steelhead in urban streams like the McIntyre and Neebing Rivers. In these same rivers, and smaller creeks like McVicar, I caught beautiful native brook trout. Years later, the urban trout fishery remains strong in the city. Yet there is an amazing urban fishery here for warm water fish as well. In fact, the Kaministiquia River, located on the south side of the city, has phenomenal fishing for walleye, pike, bass and even crappie. The river is large and boat-friendly. However, shore anglers also do well on the “Kam” and often catch as many fish as those in boats. Thunder Bay’s recently revitalized waterfront also provides great fishing opportunities. There are large pike caught by shore fishermen every year, including monsters that approach 25 pounds. These Lake Superior northern pike cruise the rocky shoreline. As a kid, I used to have fits when they grabbed hold of my perch and took them out to sea like Jaws. In the spring, steelhead are often caught by waterfront shore cast-
Sandro Fragele nets a giant northern pike for Devin Ellis. | GORD ELLIS ers, especially near McVicar Creek. Salmon and lake trout anglers can launch their boats right from the city. For the hunter, the land around Thunder Bay offers the most accessible big game opportunities of any large city in Ontario. You don’t have to drive far up Hwy. 527, for instance, to get into both prime moose and deer habitat. The majority of this hunting is found on Crown Land. If you have property within the city, but outside of the urban centre, there is opportunity for urban deer hunting with a bow. Some absolute monster bucks have been taken over the past two seasons during this hunt. Southwest of the city, waterfowl opportunities abound, and many farmers are
more than happy to allow geese and ducks to be harvested off their fields. If bear is your thing, Thunder Bay district is not going to disappoint. It is rolling with bears, some in the 500-pound range. Small game opportunities include snowshoe hare, and ruffed, sharptail and spruce grouse. That is a lot of hunting. Needless to say, with so much water and bush around, there are endless possibilities for other activities. I grew up paddling on Hazelwood Lake, just outside of the city, and it is just one of many waterways you can canoe on. Boaters have Lake Superior, and loads of smaller lakes within an hour’s drive of the city. Whitewater kayakers run the Current River, located right in the city, Minnesota Renewals Available, call for details.

every spring. Hikers have dozens of trails to choose from, many that are cared for under the umbrella of the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority. If wildlife viewing is your thing, visit Mission Marsh, located on the lake just minutes from the city’s downtown south core. This protected wetland is home to everything from leopard frogs to wood ducks. It also has an impressive herd of deer roaming the area. In the fall, large numbers of waterfowl stop at the marsh before heading south. Mission Marsh is a birder’s paradise.

Reviews By Deane Morrison UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA STARWATCH JANUARY 2014
Muck Pursuit Stealth
In January, Earth hardly “laps” Jupiter in the orbital race before being lapped by Venus. Earth overtakes Jupiter on the 5th, when it glides directly between the planet and the sun. At that time Jupiter will be opposite the sun in the sky and visible all night. Jupiter is in Gemini, one of the bright winter constellations now ornamenting the night sky. The giant planet outshines everything around it, and it also stands out due to its yellowish color. After the winter stars have risen, you can compare Jupiter’s color to that of Betelgeuse, a huge red star at Orion’s northeastern shoulder, and to the white radiance of Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, just southeast of Orion. On the 14th, a nearly full moon rises near Jupiter. Speeding between Earth and the sun, Venus overtakes us on the 11th. That event marks Venus’s official passage from the evening to the morning sky, although it will be above the horizon at both sunrise and sunset for a few days around the transition.
By the end of the month, Venus reappears as a morning star in the southeast. Also in the morning sky, Mars is brightening as Earth gains on it. Look for Mars high in the south at dawn, just above the bright star Spica, in Virgo. A waning moon visits the pair between the 22nd and 23rd and, on the 25th, brushes close by Saturn. January’s full moon arrives at 10:52 p.m. on the 15th. Algonquin Indians of the region called this the wolf moon, for the hungry howling of the packs in the depth of winter.

Late in his life, author and BWCAW advocate Sigurd Olson was the subject of a documentary filmed at and around his home in Ely. The Listening Point Foundation has a digitally remastered DVD of the original film. Viewers can watch as Olson, who died Jan. 13, 1982, talks about writing and life in the wilderness. It is not a stretch to say this DVD is a must for the many fans of Olson and his beloved canoe country. Available for $15 plus $2 shipping from listeningpointfoundation.org. —Shawn Perich

I wore these boots throughout the fall hunting season. I wore just one heavy sock with no problems, even when walking five miles or more during an outing, likely due to the etc® sockliner, breathable Airmesh liner and OPTIMAL FLEX sole technology. Fully lined with 5mm neoprene, the boots were comfortable in weather ranging from shirt-sleeve temperatures to below zero. In addition to providing ankle and calf support, the calf-high uppers were great for negotiating wetlands and waterways. The only drawback is the sole, which is especially slippery on wet rocks, meaning I won’t wear my Mucks when fishing streams or when walking along Lake Superior’s rocky shores. But I’ll wear them often for hunting or roaming in the woods. Suggested retail $184.95. Online at MuckBootCompany.com—Shawn Perich

This lightweight upland boot combines comfort with ruggedness. I found it was a great boot for spring and fall hiking or hunting. The Visible Gel System technology in the sole acts as a shock absorber. The 200 grams of Thinsulate insulation provides some warmth, but not enough to be uncomfortable on a sunny, autumn afternoon. They are waterproof as well, so you can wear them when foliage is wet from rain or dew. FiAir Starting a fire in a charcoal grill or fireplace can be slow process. You get a flame to flicker, but it can keep flickering without growing or simply sputter out. FiAir can turn a flicker into a blaze. A handheld fan powered by the AAA batteries, FiAir allows you to direct a continuous flow of air on the flame. The fan is strong enough to allow you to stand a couple of feet away from the flame, also making it especially handy to use in hard-to-reach places such as grills or woodstoves. I’ve found FiAir works surprising quickly to fire up the embers from the previous night when starting our wood furnace in the morning. University of Minnesota Press, Original Release 1995, Backin Print 2013
This series for young readers centers around 12-year-old Seth, the stepson of a game warden. In Moose Tracks, Seth witnesses two poachers shoot and kill a cow moose and then her calf. He tries to save the calf’s life in secret, because the poachers know Seth’s identity, and they threaten his family. In the sequel, Wolf Shadows, Seth becomes enmeshed in the debate over wolf hunting. Seth feels a love and loyalty for wolves, but his best friend Matt believes wolves are a threat to his family’s livestock. Both stories take place in northern Minnesota and capture the dilemmas and controversy inherent in the Northwoods. Young readers and adults alike will enjoy reading this pair of stories that are full of suspense.—Erin Altemus

Superior Shipwreck Hunters Find Lost Ship It’s a pretty amazing feat to find the deepest shipwreck in the Great Lakes. The 424foot steel-hulled freighter Scotiadoc missing since 1953, was found in Lake Superior by a team of veteran shipwreck hunters from Minnesota and Wisconsin who have been searching for sunken ships for decades. The Scotiadoc is the 13th shipwreck found by: Jerry Eliason (Cloquet), Ken Merryman (Minneapolis) and Kraig Smith (Rice Lake). They located the laker down 850-870 feet (one-sixth of a mile) 15 miles east of Thunder Bay, near the small rocky Trowbridge Island, famous for its cliffs and red-andwhite lighthouse with its original Fresnel lens. Scotiadoc sank after being rammed by the 451-foot freighter Burlington on June 20, 1953. She had left Port Arthur (now part of Thunder Bay) loaded with 260,000 bushels of wheat with a crew of 29. The Burlington, however, was headed west to the Lakehead. On the fateful day more than 60 years ago, dense fog, strong wind gusts (up to 55 mph) and heavy rain hampered visibility as the two ships headed toward each other in the shipping channel between Isle Royale and the Canadian mainland. On the Scotiadoc’s radar, Capt. George Edgar Morris saw the Burlington about five miles away, but did not reduce speed nor try to make radio contact. Meanwhile on the Burlington, Capt. George Stephen Ward reduced speed when he saw on his short-range radar that the Scotiadoc was about a mile-and-a-half away, but like the Scotiadoc captain, he also didn’t try to make radio contact. Both ships sounded their fog horns, though Captain Ward said he didn’t hear the Scotiadoc’s until her whistle blast was on his port side. He later testified, “I ran for the window, and I just saw this object coming out across the bow.” The Burlington slammed the Scotiadoc on
the starboard side near the stern, leaving a gaping hole. Scotiadoc began to list but stayed afloat long enough for the crew to get into two lifeboats. However, one lifeboat failed to properly launch, sending five crew members 15 feet down into the roiling waters; while four were saved, 39-year-old William McDermid from Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, drowned. The Burlington’s bow was pushed in 4-8 feet, but she was able to turn around, return and rescue the surviving crew members. Later, an investigation put 75 percent of blame for the accident on the captain of the Scotiadoc and 25 percent on the captain of Burlington. If one were superstitious (as old-time mariners tended to be), it could be said that the Scotiadoc was jinxed and doomed before she sailed on the Great Lakes for Paterson Steamship Co. Built in 1904 and originally named the Martin Mullen, she was sold to Paterson in November 1947 and renamed Scotiadoc in honour of the Province of Nova Scotia. But this was the fourth ship the company had named after Nova Scotia; the previous three, all named Novadoc, had each met a tragic end (the last one was lost in North Atlantic off New England with its entire crew of 25 in March 1947). To break the jinx seemingly associated with Novadoc, but determined to keep the Nova Scotia connection, Paterson gave the ship the name Scotiadoc. Alas, she sank in Lake Superior about 5 l/2 years later. (‘’doc’’ is an acronym for ‘Dominion of Canada). The sunken Scotiadoc remained undetected for over 60 years, but was not forgotten—the shipwreck group that found her had been searching for years. Earlier in the year, they had found the steel-hulled freighter Henry B. Smith (built 1906), which sank in Lake Michigan 100 years ago during the wicked “White Hurricane” storm of 1913. Then on Sept. 7, 2013, aboard Merryman’s 33-foot

Earlier in the summer they had located the target site using a sonar unit developed by Eliason’s son Jarrod and had initial images. However, the September video footage confirmed the name Scotiadoc on the ship’s side. According to Eliason, the ship is largely intact and sitting upright with the bow resting at 850 feet and the mangled stern at
870 feet. The pilothouse is resting beside the ship, and some of the ship’s white paint and orange color still remain. In an article in the Duluth News Tribune (Oct. 5, 2013), Eliason said, “Finding the Henry B. Smith was the entrée; the Scotiadoc was the dessert.” The group, which hunts for shipwrecks as a hobby, not a business, have plans to find the 427-foot steamer Henry Steinbrenner, which sank south of Isle Royale in May 1953 and the 150-foot steel freighter Leafield lost off Angus Island in the 1913 storm. Stay tuned.
