Summer may be winding down, but the live music scene in Cook County isn’t. Between the abundance of live music throughout the week at many of the local restaurants and bars, the upcoming Mountain Stage and Unplugged Festival and WTIP’s Radio Waves Festival, a person could become completely absorbed in music all through September.
Campground 800-998-0959 • 218-387-1712 • Downtown, easy walk to shops & restaurants • 300 campsites from full RV hookups to tent sites • Lakefront and wooded primitive sites • Cobblestone beach, trails, playground, picnic pavilion • 4 bath houses with flush toilets and hot showers • Marina, public dock & access to Lake Superior • Firewood, ice & supplies
Music Month
Funded in part by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. Supported by funds from the Grand Marais Tourism Association and funded in part by the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council
The festivals are almost back to back. WTIP’s Radio Waves Music Festival is Sept. 8-9, and the Mountain Stage Unplugged Festival at the North House Folk School is Sept. 13-16. Both festivals unintentionally became annual events after a successful first round and have continued to grow, bringing in local, regional and national artists. Each festival has featured some of the bigger names in music, and this year is no different. Trampled by Turtles will be featured at the Unplugged Festival and The Carpenter Ants featured at Radio Waves. Radio Waves began in 2008 to celebrate WTIP’s 10-year anniversary. The first Radio Waves was a one day event, but delivered a great turn out. “Hundreds of people came to celebrate WTIP and enjoy a day of music." says Development Director Melanie Steele at WTIP. The band Portage, above, and D’Merritt, right, are among the local bands appearing during Radio Waves.
Jon Veznor, shown above with Kathy Mattea, is returning to Unplugged. Rising stars Trampled by Turtles, left, headline Mountain Stage.
It was intended to be a onetime celebration to thank the community for their support, but the community had other ideas. After the first year, WTIP partnered with the North Shore Music Association and expanded the festival to two full days. The response has been great. Last year, the festival featured more than 20 different acts and attendance reached more than 1,000 people. The festival now takes place the weekend after Labor Day. More than 20 different acts will be featured, many of which are talented Grand Marais locals, such as Earth Wind and Todd, Briand Morrison, MYsterious WAYs and Cook County’s Most Wanted. The Carpenter Ants will also be making an appearance, along with Bughouse!, Bill Camplin and Randy Sabien, Bump and Barbara Jean, Yvonne Mills and many more. MUSIC continued on page 18 »

SUNDAY’S SUNDAY
By Shawn Perich When the Mountain Stage radio program records its concert in Grand Marais Sept. 13, local singer-songwriter Barbara Jean Meyers will be on the stage. She was surprised to be selected for the show, which features Minnesota and regional performers, including Trampled by Turtles and Peter Himmelman. “I was asked to be on the show by Mountain Stage producer Adam Harris,” she says. “Larry Groce, the host, had been listening to my songs online.”
Until recently, Meyers was the news director of WTIP Radio in Grand Marais. She is now doing freelance work as a journalist, because her life as a musician is becoming busier. In June, she received an honorable mention in the Troubadour Contest held at the prestigious Telluride Bluegrass Festival. In August,
“I always played in bands in the Twin Cities,” she says. “Even after I moved to Cook County (in 2006), I’d go back to the Cities to play gigs.” She began performing in Cook County as well, first playing with Nathan Baker, who subsequently moved from the area, and then Eric Frost, Bill Hansen and Jessa Frost. She’s been appearing onstage with “Bump” Blomberg for about two years. Currently, she is putting the finishing touches on an album which has a planned Meyers' continued on page 17 »

“It shifted my focus and made me think about trying to pursue a music career,” she says.
While she graduated with a journalism degree from the University of Minnesota, music has always been part of Meyers’ life. A classically trained violist, she attended high school at the Perpich Center for Arts Education in the Twin Cities. She decided not to pursue a career in the ultra-competitive field of classical music, but continued to study the viola and played in a classical quartet while in college. And then there were the bands – in the folk-country-bluegrass genre. In addition to viola, she plays the banjo, fiddle and other instruments.

The concert won’t be Meyers’ first nationally broadcast performance. Last year, she performed at the Big Top Chautauqua, where she won the annual songwriting contest. That performance was broadcast on a public radio program called Tent Show Radio. Winning the contest, which she entered on a whim, marked a turning point for the songwriter.

Local Biking Keeps Getting Better By Breana Roy The number of bike trails offered, both paved and unpaved, in Cook County grows each year. However, if you are unfamiliar with the trails, trying to map them all out can be like piecing together an intricate puzzle. And finding a single map showing all the trails can be difficult. But with a little research, the perfect trail can be found to satisfy your needs.
and starts across the road from the Devil Track General Store. Or you can try the Bear Cub Loop near Bearskin Lodge. This five- mile loop will push your limits. Other trails include the intermediate 18-mile Devil Track Lake Loop and various Pincushion Mountain Biking Trails.
For bikers seeking a leisure ride, the Gitchi-Gami State Trail, which stretches along Highway 61 between Two Harbors to Grand Marais, offers sections of paved pathways, adding up to a total of more than 25 miles. The longest section is about 14.6 miles and stretches from Gooseberry Falls State Park to Beaver Bay. Someday, the entire Gitchi-Gami State Trail should be paved, though the completion date is unknown. When finished, it will be an 88-mile non-motorized recreational trail. If you live on the east end of Grand Marais, you might try the Croftville loop. It makes a great paved path and offers a beautiful view of Lake Superior. To learn more about mountain bike trails and view maps of certain trails, visit www.visitcookcounty.com/biking. Or to learn more about the Gitchi-Gami State Trail, visit www. ggta.org.

Cholesterol:
You Can’t Live Without It
By Jim Boyd Cholesterol is the Rodney Dangerfield of the human body: It gets no respect. And it should. Really. Your body comprises roughly 10 trillion cells. Each is contained within a membrane, and cholesterol plays an important role in building those membranes. Without it … well, think amoeba, very large amoeba. Too, cholesterol is a major component of the membranes found in the spinal column, the brain and in nerves. Cholesterol stored in the ovaries, adrenal glands and testicles gets converted into steroid hormones, without which you would be a very unhappy, malfunctioning being. You would most likely have problems with your weight, bones, sex, digestion and mental health. Not a happy camper. The problem is that a well-functioning human body produces the tiny bits of cholesterol you need for those essential functions. When you ingest surplus cholesterol in the food you eat, it has no purpose. It floats around your bloodstream, tiny globs that can get caught on the walls of your arteries. Eventually, a buildup of cholesterol can lead to a narrowing or even blockage of an artery. The decreased blood flow that results raises the risk of heart disease, stroke and reduced kidney function. The typical American diet is, unfortunately, high in cholesterol. Which is why September is Cholesterol Awareness Month: Those who think about such things want you to become more aware of the risk you run if you do not actively work to keep your cholesterol level in check. There are two ways to do that, and chances are you know them well but honor them less well: exercise and a cholesterol-healthy diet. You also probably know that there are two main types of cholesterol, commonly known as “good” and “bad.” A better way to think of it is as high and low: You want high levels of high-density cholesterol and low levels of low-density cholesterol. (Technically, high-density lipoproteins and lowdensity lipoproteins, but let’s not confuse the matter). High-density cholesterol is more than good; it approaches greatness, because it scurries around the bloodstream gobbling up excess low-density cholesterol and returning it to the liver, where it is recycled and kept away from those cholesterol-snagging artery walls.
“I stopped ‘exercising.’ I don’t do it any more. Now I ‘play.’ I do things I like to do that involve moving my body,” —Dr. Michael Sampson The bad news, says Dr. Michael Sampson, of Sawtooth Mountain Clinic, is that there is no pill you can take, food you can eat or incantation you can invoke to increase your supply of the good highdensity cholesterol: The genetic blueprint your parents provided decides how much of the good stuff you start out with. The only option available for raising your high-density cholesterol, Sampson says, is physical exercise. Sampson is acutely aware of how the recommendation to “get more exercise” affects most people he sees. “I tell them to do things they don’t like and eat things they don’t like, and wonder why they don’t follow my advice,” he says in mock wonderment. Sampson gets it: “I stopped ‘exercising.’ I don’t do it any more. Now I ‘play.’ I do things I like to do that involve moving my body,” he said. For Sampson, that list includes running, biking, hiking and the like – options that are missing from the “like” lists of many people. So make up your own list, he says. “Just move your body.” “Even 10 minutes is beneficial,” he said. “People say they don’t have time to exercise, but everyone has 10 minutes a day.” And there is a reward: If you exercise or “play” in sufficient amounts (120 minutes a week is the recommendation) you may be able to afford that occasional malt from Sydney’s. That’s because more high-density cholesterol means more to chomp away on those bad boy globs of low-density cholesterol. That’s why doctors always emphasize the ratio of the two.
For most people (some have genetic predispositions to unhealthy cholesterol levels), controlling low-density cholesterol involves diet. But it need not be akin to eating dirt. “The ideal diet is the ‘Mediterranean diet,’ “ Sampson says, “and those Mediterranean folks seem to enjoy their food.” The Mediterranean diet includes lots of fruits, vegetables and nuts, moderate amounts of fish and chicken, and lesser amounts of red meat. It can include moderate amounts of red wine. Substituting olive oil for other fats and oils appears to bring big benefits. To this you might also consider adding red yeast rice, which apparently works as a natural substitute for statins. Those are the drugs prescribed to help get very high levels of low-density cholesterol under control before they can bring on a heart attack, a stroke or impair the function of your kidneys. The aim of cholesterol awareness, if it needs saying, is to ensure your body remains healthy for as long as possible so that you may enjoy life as long as possible. The aim is not to punish or to prohibit enjoyment of the good stuff. What would be the point? Spock did not say, “Live long and suffer.” He, being a bit of a pedant, very well might have said, “Live long and prosper, and start with a cholesterol-healthy lifestyle of your own design.”

The Landing at Devil Track Resort has a great steakhouse menu all year long.
The Landing at Devil Track Resort By Joan Farnam Emily LaVigne has found the formula that works for The Landing. The beautiful restaurant and bar, which is part of Devil Track Resort, overlooks Devil Track Lake with its expanse of blue water and pine tree forests. It’s a welcoming vista in all seasons. On summer Sundays, for example, guests can dine outside by the lake on cedar-planked salmon, with Emily LaVigne, owner of Devil Track Resort. live music playing in the She’s made some good decisions over the background. years, and the business has thrived. LaVigne said the resort has two full seasons, winter and summer, and because it’s off the beaten path, it offers alternatives to visitors all times of the year. The summer season at Devil Track continues through September and early October when leaf lookers are on the prowl. Hunters also like the resort. “We get grouse hunters, deer hunters and bear hunters,” she said. “They like the advantage of a rural place to stay but can still shop in Grand Marais.” November is usually slow, but businesses that shut down that month usu-

mobile season, one of their busiest. April is quiet and then things pick up again with the Fishing Opener in May.
“We do a lot of Christmas parties, about 30 a year,” she said. The new banquet space has really worked well for this, she said.
Because The Landing is open year round (it is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays), the menus are pretty much the same, except for seasonal specials, she said.
Many of the restaurants in the county are set up for smaller groups with tables for two or four. The Landing, by contrast, is well-prepared to handle groups of 10 or more. “It’s always complicated to cook for 15 people at once, but we can do it,” she said.
Entrees include everything from a variety of steaks, ribs and burgers to walleye and shrimp as well as a variety of pastas and sandwiches. It’s a menu that works well for her guests, LaVigne said, and she’s happy for that.

Preserving Summer Story and photos by Joan Farnam Now is the time of year when everybody who has a garden is working hard to preserve food they’ve grown so they can enjoy it when the snow flies. Canning, freezing, drying, pickling and setting up cold storage areas in a basement, garage or root cellar are all options for preserving the summer harvest. Which methods to use is a personal choice, since most vegetables also can be canned, pickled, dried or frozen. However, low-tech methods are convenient and often result in a better product.
For example, winter squash, potatoes, cabbage, onions and garlic can be stored for months in a basement or other room or building that stays between 35 to 45 degrees in the winter. Layering carrots and beets in containers filled with moist sand or sawdust and keeping them in a cool place is also low-tech, and is a great way to store these vegetables for winter soups and stews. If you have a root cellar, even better. Many basements these days are heated, but it’s possible to create your own cold storage area next to an outside wall, said Diane Booth, Cook County Extension agent. Insulate the three
walls facing the basement wall and provide some sort of ventilation, then use the area to store squash and potatoes as well as cabbages. Beets and carrots need some moisture to stay crisp and fresh, she said. Putting them in plastic bags in the bottom drawer of a refrigerator works well, too. Make sure you put a few holes in the bags so they can “breathe.” Onions and garlic just need cool, dry conditions, and keep well in most basements. Dave Steckelberg said he just stores his potatoes in cardboard boxes in the coolest room in the basement. “They kept very well all winter long,” he said.

Dave Steckelberg likes to freeze his vegetables for winter feasts.
“They started sprouting in March.” Drying is an old-fashioned method that is a great way of preserving food. Many love to dry apples and other fruits, which become natural snacks in the winter. The best dryers have a fan at the back, not underneath the trays, said Jan Attridge, who dries as many apples as she can every fall. Booth said she loves to eat apple slices that have been dipped in cinnamon and sugar before drying. Ann Rosenquist dries lots of onions every year. Rosenquist, who had a garden in Grand Marais for years but now lives at Northwinds Organic Farm in Bayfield, Wis., said she chops the onions into relatively small pieces. In Grand Marais, she put the dryer in an outbuilding. And yes, there were lots of tears during the chopping. “It’s part of the deal. I’ve worn goggles before,” she said. The dried onions are used in soups and stews as well as bread and beans, and are really convenient. Fermenting vegetables in crocks or jars to make sauerkraut and kim chee is a great method of preserving the harvest, too.

Freezing is one of the best options that works really well for a variety of vegetables including greens, tomatoes, corn, beans, chopped beets and peppers as well as pestos and sauces. Here, the key is getting a good chest freezer, preferably an upright. Steckelberg became a great fan of freezing vegetables after he started using a vacuum sealer. The vegetables are blanched and then sealed into heavy plastic bags with all the air removed. They store remarkably well, he said, and taste alPreserving continued on page 19 »

Grouse Hunting:
Northern Minnesota’s Autumn Pastime Story and photo by Ada Igoe When the poet John Keats penned his “Ode to Autumn,” he wrote of a “season of mists and mellow fruitfulness.” Had Keats hailed from northern Minnesota, his ode likely would have included a line or two about grouse hunting. Keats may not have waxed poetic about grouse hunting, but around these parts, even the crustiest outdoorsmen (or women) probably have something nice to say about grouse hunting. It’s an accessible sport that can be done on foot or from a vehicle, and you don’t actually have to be a hunter to enjoy the long, crisp walks through autumn woods. Although I wasn’t exposed to grouse hunting until my early 20s, my partner Andy pointed out that many Minnesotans’ soft spot for grouse hunting (my own included) stems from the fact that it’s the first hunting experience most Minnesota kids have. That the odds are tilted in hunters’ favor also helps boost the sport’s popularity. According to the Minnesota DNR, “The three to seven birds annually harvested per hunter in Minnesota are unsurpassed.”
Considered by many as a grouse hunting Mecca, Cook County and the rest of northern Minnesota offer endless acres of perfect ruffed grouse habitat. The small game bird, averaging 1.5 pounds, prefers dense forests such as young aspen groves. During the winter, the birds burrow in the snow and their three-toed feet act as snowshoes, allowing them to move easily through the snowy world. With the grouse’s aptitude for cool climates, it’s no surprise that hunters in Minnesota, as well as Wisconsin and Michigan, consistently bag the most grouse each year. All three states vie for the designation of being the state with the top grouse harvest each year. According to the DNR, Minnesota hunters harvest between 150,000 and 1.4 million grouse each year. Just as the snowshoe hare population fluctuates on a 10-year cycle, so does the grouse. The DNR measures the population by surveying the number of “drums” they hear during the spring, when male grouse beat their wings to attract females. The 2012 grouse survey found drumming down to 1.1 drum per survey stop in northeast Minnesota. The
grouse population is thought to have peaked in 2009, when surveys found an average of 2 drums per survey stop. “The grouse population is in the declining phase of its 10year cycle,” said Mike Larson, DNR wildlife research group leader and grouse biologist about the 2012 season. “The most recent peak in drum counts was during 2009, but hunter harvests remained relatively high through at least 2010.” Even when the grouse population is at the lowest point in the 10-year cycle, the MN DNR says that hunting has no effect on the population. Because the grouse’s diet is so varied – they eat anything from leaves and berries to insects and reptiles - they can thrive in just about any condition. Unlike deer hunting, which requires a bit of strategy and planning, grouse hunting just requires donning your blaze
orange and heading for the woods. Cook County’s network of snowmobile trails turn into hunters’ hiking trails this time of year, and back roads, like The Grade or Shoe Lake Road, offer spectacular fall colors and good grouse habitat. While you’re out, you might cross paths with a smaller, darker and more speckled grouse. Known as a spruce or Canada grouse, this bird prefers boreal forest conifers, and here in Cook County is on the southern end of its range, which stretches through much of Canada. Although it has a slightly purple flesh, the spruce grouse, like the ruffed grouse, is considered “good eatin.” One bird you won’t be hunting this fall is partridge. Although many people still refer to grouse hunting as “partridge hunting,” you won’t find any partridge, which prefer open fields, in Cook County.
» Meyers' continued from page 7
September release. Titled 'The Great Escape,' it was recorded at Sacred Heart in Duluth. The album, which is an outgrowth of winning the songwriting contest last year, represents another milestone in her musical career. “An album allows you to go further as an artist,” she says. “It represents who you are and what you do.” Meyers hopes to gain a wider audience for her music via the album, which will allow her to expand her performances to regional venues and festivals. That new audience may find her via the Internet, which has become a powerful tool for musicians to promote their work—even when living in an out-of-the-way location like Grand Marais. Of course, it doesn’t hurt when national radio program like Mountain Stage comes to your town to record a couple of shows. Meyers is excited about her opportunity to perform on the show and also about the chance to meet and play with
other musicians. She credits the connections she’s made in the music world during the past year with helping her move forward with her career. “Music is about working with other people,” she says. “It’s about looking for the magic combination that comes from playing with others when it really clicks.” What’s next for Barbara Jean Meyers? For now, she plans to continue living in Cook County. Although she grew up in the Twin Cities, she has family roots in Superior, Wis. and a strong affinity for Lake Superior. Eventually, she acknowledges, she may need to move to somewhere else to better accommodate performing and touring. Most likely, “somewhere” will be in Minnesota. “Nashville isn’t on my radar,” she says. “I think a lot of good things can be done from this state.”

Unplugged began in 2002 by Grammy-award winning songwriter Jon Vezner. He became inspired after a visit to the NHFS and recruited a few well-known friends to play a fundraiser concert for the school. Vezner’s friends included former Doobie Brothers member Michael McDonald, former Eagle's member Bernie Leadon, country folk singer Kathy Mattea and Minnesota’s very own Michael Monroe. The Unplugged Festival has since been an annual event and Vezner still finds time to return, always bringing different friends with him. Last year the NPR radio show Mountain Stage, based out of West Virginia, made their first appearance in the Midwest. Two more nights were added to the Unplugged lineup to allow Mountain Stage to record their shows in Grand Marais, which are broadcast later in the year. Each night was sold out, with seating for about 700 people. This year will be even bigger, and ticket sales are reported to be running 30 percent ahead of last year. This year, the festival includes mini -craft and food courses, music-related classes with some of the performers, guest speakers and an online auction. “The Cook County business community has really stepped up to support the event by taking part in the auction,” says communications manager, Kate Watson.
