Lease Agreement When renting a property, you will enter into a lease agreement. A lease agreement is a contract between you and the property owner or manager (landlord). A lease agreement states that you have the right to live in a home for a specific period and explains your responsibilities and your landlord’s responsibilities. You should never rent a home or apartment without a written lease agreement.
Bankruptcy If you have been unable to find a home because of your debt, bankruptcy may offer you a fresh start. Bankruptcy is a legal tool that can help you get rid of certain debts in order to protect consumers from creditors.
Federal Housing Programs The federal government has several programs that can help you find affordable housing if your family is low-income, if you're elderly, or if you're disabled. Depending on your situation, your rent can be very low or even free. Some of these programs include: Public Housing Units are managed by a housing authority. Rent is based on a percentage of your income. Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers Recipients are free to choose any housing that qualifies for the program. Part of your rent is paid through the voucher program depending on your income. Project-Based Vouchers Tied to a certain property. A portion of the rent is paid through the voucher program depending on your income. Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) Privately owned properties with reduced rental rates because of a tax subsidy they received while being built.
