The Authors

Dana Bull

A native to southern California, but grew up in the Mid-West in a loving military family. Loves nature, animals and traveling. Has 5 undergraduate degrees in horticulture and social sciences. Hopes to one day design and build her own home.

Shannon Jaworski

Having lived in Texas, Boston, and London, Shannon was exposed to various cultures and climates through moving and traveling with her family. One thing remained constant, she always found solace in nature, art, and with animals and continues that trend in her current home of Los Angeles. She plans to use her Landscape Architecture degree from Cal Poly in an effort to protect and nurture the environment and its inhabitants.

Amber Urena

Born and raised in Southern California, I was constantly exposed to the diverse art and music culture. After exploring the different field of arts I decided to try my hand at design. I was approached to enter an engineering program at the start of my community college career and later decided to try my hand at architecture. After a couple years of that I was introduced to landscape architecture and was offered a spot in the Landscape design program at cal poly where I am still currently a student today. I am interested in landscape design with an emphasis in sustainability. I am set t graduate in the year 2016 and hope to pursue a career in landscape regeneration.

Charlene Voight

Even though I was born in Alaska, I have grown up and gone to school in Southern California. Having an artistic talent, strong logic and mathematical skills, and a desire for everyone to enjoy an ecologically healthy and beautiful environment, going to Cal Poly and majoring in landscape architecture is a dream come true. I am in my third year of the landscape architecture program. My desire after graduating is to be involved with the revitalization work in Los Angeles County. In conclusion, I want to develop strong ties with our Southern California community and use my skills towards keeping California beautiful and ecologically healthy.

West Hollywood West Hollywood is a unique city situated amidst the grand city of Los Angeles. The city of West Hollywood is rich with art, culture, and a unique population. The people here are as eclectic as the city itself. Musicians, comedians, and aspiring actors flood to Los Angeles to pursue their dreams, many of them end up residing in West Hollywood. This is city like no other, extremely welcoming to the LGBT community and people of all types. Anyone can come here and make it a home all their own. Driving along Santa Monica or Sunset, people can be seen riding bikes, running, walking dogs, our lounging in an outdoor cafÊ. The population is highly creative and health conscious. On the other hand, there are the families who have lived in West Hollywood for an extended time and made it their home. There is a large Russian population in some areas, and in other areas the population consists of young transplants. Throughout the whole city, neighborhoods have truly become communities. The people of Weho care about their city, and it shows. Residential areas are beautifully landscaped and pleasant to roam through. Commercial areas are just as well-maintained, with flowering trees and shrubs along most sidewalks and building facades. Art can be seen throughout the city, from street art to landscaping to art shows. Creatives have made this place their home because it is rich with inspiration and opportunity. Comedy clubs have become just as popular as the nightclubs. Rooftop pools have become just as popular as the beach. Dog parks have become just as popular as regular parks. People here seek adventure, outdoor activity, and entertainment. The Sunset Strip specifically has become the music district, where local bands, concert-goers, and known musicians gather. Rockers and fans can be seen wandering the strip or waiting for the next show. With so much variety and opportunity, this has become a place for hopefuls in the entertainment industry. The city continues to grow, with many future plans for demolition and the implementation of hotels and condominiums to house the growing population – temporary and permanent. With such growth and development it is vital for the city to preserve the arts and general ambience of West Hollywood. The music scene has lost popularity since the 1970s and it is important to maintain the creative vibe of the area. By preserving the existing outdoor space and creating more zones for outdoor activity, the Weho community will continue to thrive in its beloved city. By allowing and creating space for new creatives to perform and showcase their skills, this city has hopes of remaining the imaginative place is has always been.

Sunset Strip is a place rich with activity: shopping, dining, nightlife. This area has VD L Bmusic scene since the 1970s; visitors come here to catch a glimpse been a bustling CA NI O M of these epic A venues and to walk the famous Strip. Locals come to the strip to meet NT A S friends, shop or enjoy a show. Socializing is an important part of the activity in this area; people can be seen sipping on coffee together, shopping together, going to BEVERLY BLVD concerts together, and walking and talking along the sidewalk. By taking inventory of the active spaces on Sunset, it is revealed that they revolve around retail and nightlife, but these activities occur mostly indoors. Unlike other parts of Los Angeles, the strip houses most of its activity within walls, leaving only sidewalks and small outdoor cafĂŠ areas for outdoor socializing. The few areas of the strip that exist without walls are filled with people trying to get a bit of sun and enjoy W 3RD ST the beautiful weather that LA has to offer. By assessing these conditions the need for outdoor usable space becomes apparent. Perhaps the popularity of the Strip can be revived by offering a new type of activity to this place which has lost the luster it once held: the outdoor activity that people seek. By opening sidewalks and making more usable outdoor space for the locals, Sunset Strip will regain its vitality. N

Inventory of Green Space and Pools on the Sunset Strip Open Space Pools

Through observation, we were able to detect a strong sense of social gathering spaces located near water in west hollywood. Not only were people grabbing a drink by the pool at the standard but local residents were barbecuing on hot after noons and laying out poolside. There was a strong need for people to be outside. Due to the lack of open outdoor spaces we determined that simply putting in a typical park would not suffice. We determined that the trends of the city of West Hollywood are continuing in the direction of bars, music, health, community and wellness and in order for all of those requirements to be met a rooftop pool for the party crowd of West Hollywood as well as a recreational pool for the locals of west hollywood would be the best way to meet the needs of the users.

Inventory of Residential Housing and Hotels In West Hollywood Residential Hotels

After spending time in West Hollywood researching the demographic of the population found there, we discovered that not only is the sunset strip filled with tourists and shoppers but also with locals. The residents of West Hollywood are a prominent part of the community and not only are they users of the space but they are what make the city. Without the residents of West Hollywood the sunset strip fails to present itself as a prime place to grab lunch on your break, or go in for a quick workout in between running errands. The residents of the strip are the ones who are keeping West Hollywood from becoming the next Las Vegas.

FIELD CONDITIONS OF WEHO AND SURROUNDING AREAS

PUBLIC POOLS (11)

HOTEL POOLS (22)

LOS ANGELES FIELD CONDITIONS HOTEL POOLS SITE LOCATION PUBLIC POOLS

West Hollywood is encompassed by luxury hotels with lavish pool areas and West Hollywood’s surrounding areas have many public pools available for the residents use. By mapping the area we found eleven public pools and twenty two hotels with pools. With this information it was our design intent to plan a multipurpose community complex that would have the ambience of a luxury spa and pool area. Also, the community complex would contain a semi private pool for the public to enjoy at one site location. Medicinal pools were also added to our design plan to allow for a larger scale attendance for the entire community since our purpose is for the residents of West Hollywood and surrounding areas to be able to enjoy the facilities. Medicinal pools would be used by the elderly and young adults of the community for health healing reasons. The three typologies of the pools would be a useful addition for the community and would be unique to what is currently in West Hollywood..

Intense Urbanism Argument The Sunset Strip is laden with retail shops, restaurants, bars, and music venues that are designed to pull people off the street and into enclosed spaces. These spaces tend to be low-level rectangular buildings that are anchored to the sidewalk and have limited views of the outdoors. The Strip is a highly social atmosphere; human interaction is integral to its sustenance. Socializing unites a community and allows people to connect with one another as well as reflect upon themselves. Human interaction can occur in many contexts, from an indoor café to a concert to a beach volleyball game. Like socializing, spending time outdoors nourishes the mind, body, and spirit. Southern California is fortunate enough to have sunshine and warm weather year-round and is thus poised for outdoor recreation. West Hollywood, part of the entertainment industry hub of Los Angeles, is inhabited by health-conscious and creative individuals, from young aspiring actors and musicians to yogis and runners. We propose a novel place, an inversion of the existing enclosed typologies of the Sunset Strip – a place poised for outdoor socialization and activity. Our design, Infinite Source, responds to the creative nature of LA, its prime weather conditions, and the health and social needs of the community. This design is an evolution of the private backyards and gardens of Los Angeles, an outdoor experience that is communal and inviting to a broader range of the West Hollywood demographic. Revealing what swimming meant before the advent of the single-family backyard pool, this project conceives the pool as a social setting again, consisting of a recreational pool, a therapeutic pool, and an adult rooftop pool. All “indoor” spaces mimic an outdoor ambiance and conjure social activity, from the interactive restaurant to the performing arts space. Infinite Source is a place for everyone, from the varying families to the visionaries; it will continue to reveal the importance of socialization in open space amidst the ever-growing metropolis of Los Angeles. 9

Urban Design Strategy & Architectural Approach West Hollywood is a playground for urban designers. The way people react in different spaces and move throughout the city is not only experienced along the Sunset strip for Santa Monica Blvd. I can also be recognized from the tall towers located in the city, or on tour bus headed down the strip. Bars, tattoo parlors, music venues, restaurants, high end retail stores, and even sex shops attract a crowd that can only be appreciated in West Hollywood. Not only are we seeing an increase in population decrease in open space. Residents, visitors, and tourists are being forced into rectangular dark buildings for they have no exposure to the outdoor spaces. Sidewalks of West Hollywood are filled with people walking, texting, dining, smoking, drinking, all with no regard of what anyone else thinks. Whether it’s visitors or locals, the city of West Hollywood shows no mercy to those who are different. They are welcomed and celebrated at any given time. The Sunset strip is a place where you can identify as anything you like gay, straight punk, conservative artistic or plain. Everyone is welcome. The city is beginning to cater to the needs of all users, and we are seeing an increase in development based on the growing population. similar programs have been implemented throughout the city based on the needs of the people inhabiting Los Angeles.

Built Perspective & Renderings to Show our Vision

Created by: Charlene Voight

This rendering shows our vision for the indoor outdoor ambience inside the complex. As one can see the wall materials consist of green living walls and water walls. The other walls are transparent to allow for ample amount of sunlight to shine through. On any day of the week visitors and West Hollywood’s residents can spend their leisure time with the feel of being outdoors on Sunset Boulevard without having to spend it outside listening to the everyday noise that is associated with the Sunset Strip.

This rendering shows our vision of a semi private infinity pool that overlooks the Hollywood Hills. This pool would be shallow in most parts ranging from two to four feet at the deepest end. A rooftop pool was designed for adults to socialize with while relaxing in the sun and having refreshments with their friends. 19 19

Infinite Source responds to the building of more hotels and condominiums in West Hollywood, and the direction that this will be leading the Sunset Strip. The IS aims to preserve open space while still embracing the appeal of these structures’ amenities. By honoring and incorporating these private programs (such as the bars, cafes, restaurants, pools and spas of the hotel and condo), but making them public, Infinite Source brings these programs to the community. Not only do these amenities become available to the public, but they become “outdoor” amenities by existing in either the outdoor spaces or the indoor spaces which feel outdoors. Nature is reflected throughout indoor spaces with the use of natural light, plant material, and flowing water. The common typology of the box-like building found on the Strip is inverted and opened up, revealing the possibility of enjoying numerous activities in open space rather than structures. Infinite Source is an evolution of the private backyards and gardens of Los Angeles, an outdoor space where locals can gather, socialize, and be entertained any time of day: an infinite source of activity. https://vimeo.com/122988010
