Book Review Old Scores by Leigh Dallas Rose

Let me start with a warn ing. Due to the sexual scenes within this book it is not suitable for children or those that are easily offended. Now that’s said lets get back to the book. As a football fan I was intrigued by this book. It takes a different approach to most football novels, focussing on the lower end of the football league wh ich is a far cry fro m the polished and glamorous world that dominates the back and increasingly the front pages of the tabloid press. Le igh Da llas Rose, who is loca l to this area, is not a writer many would have heard of before as this is his first published novel. Clearly he has drawn on his own experiences as Leigh spent the start of his long career in football with several years working at Derby County as a scout after his playing career was ended by an injury. This novel follows the journey of the affable but naïve Paul Breakwell, whose last chance looks to have past him by a long time ago. Until the washed-up and disgraced ex-manager Nigel Lander stumbles upon Pauls talent one day and it re -ignites his love of the ‘beautiful ga me’. It’s a chance meeting that will change the course of their lives, dragging them into a murky world of se x, drugs and iniquity which surrounds the unscrupulous Billy Blades. They will need to keep their wits about them and trust in their new friendship if they are to come out of this unscathed. I enjoyed reading this book and would happily reco mmend to broadminded readers who enjoy a well-paced and spicy thriller wh ich develops the characters and storyline well, building the intrigue of the reader so that you end up racing towards the dramatic conclusion.

It has been a fairly poorly kept secret that I disappeared with a few close friends and family last month to foreign climbs to get married. I had been thinking for months about what I could do to thank them all for their great efforts in joining us, whilst making it fun, original and personal to each of them…..then up pops Darren!! I came across his business card by chance and I couldn’t believe my luck, a caricature for each guest with personal touches to re<lect their interests, which we made into a game of ‘guess who’ on the day! It went down a storm and I can’t recommend it highly enough. Darren was fantastic from start to <inish, I would e-mail him some photos (head on of course...and whilst trying to keep it a surprise that took some explaining to family and friends!), stating their eye colours and personal interests and hobbies and he would do the rest. We would also get a copy via e-mail so that on the one occasion where I wanted a slight amendment, he would oblige willingly and I would get the amended version within 24 hours. He even put a little hidden logo on each caricature with our initials and date, so that guests would remember for years to come...a really lovely personal touch. I think the most surprising thing for me is that , although I knew they would be really well received, they were more popular than I ever thought. Most people have them up and framed already and because the likeness is so good and the artistry is so original, I know that some of my friends and family have ordered work from him already for peoples birthdays and anniversaries, which is great. So, if you want something original for a celebration of any kind….contact Darren, you won’t regret it!

Reader Recommends

For Mothers day we treated my mum to a beautifully gift wrapped voucher for the pre-holiday package from Heather at Body & Sole and I joined her for a girly day of indulgence. Our day started at 10am with robes and <lip <lops waiting for us in a beautiful room over looking the garden. We then moved on to a full schedule of treatments before stopping for a fabulous afternoon tea, which included champagne and strawberries!! The wax Heather uses is brilliant and was much less painful!! She did a great job with the lash and brow tint and the nails. I can’t speak highly enough of Heather. She pampered us all day with total professionalism and we really enjoyed our day of luxury.

Mrs Leivers from Alfreton contacted me to tell me about the fantastic treatment that Heather at Body and Sole had performed on her shoulder problem. When Mrs Leivers <irst saw Heather, she couldn’t lift her arm above waist level but after several treatments, she can now lift it above her head. She said that “it was a very professional, relaxing and calm environment and was so happy with the result”. She also said that “ I’ve had lots of other treatments too and they are all fantastic”. If you have a recommendation about any of the advertisers in the Amber Valley Voice that you would like to pass on to our readers then please let us know by calling Emily on 01773 604178 or 07891 639638 or email us on; info@ambervalleyvoice.co.uk

16 This month we are sharing with you our dogs favourite walk. Shipley Park is a great place to take your dog with a variety of scenery and heaps of off-lead walking. There are lots of nice walks around the park with more information available at the visitors centre. If you have a favourite of your own why not share it with us by email at info@ambervalleyvoice.co.uk or by calling Emily on 01773 604178 or 07891 639638 3 1/2 Mile Walk Around Shipley Park Another great walk for you and your dog it offers a range of scenery and plenty of off-lead walking. The route is quite short taking about 1 1/2 hours allowing you to explore the park. It is fairly flat with some small uphill sections and the terrain is mixed with some sections which can be fairly muddy if it has been wet.

Park in the car park by the visitors centre. (There is a charge for parking of £1.20 for 2 hrs, £2.40 for 4 hrs and £3.60 for the day)

Begin the walk at the corner of the car park by the “Welcome to Shipley Country Park” sign. Take the path to the right of the sign. After about 50 meters turn right through a gate taking the path that leads up towards the fenced wooded area called Cinderhill.

Enter Cinderhill and follow the path around to the left. After a short while you will come across a split in the path where you will turn left.

Exit Cinderhill and go straight on across the path and through a gap in the hedge into a large field. Take the path that leads diagonally across the field.

At the far end of the field exit onto Shipley Lane and turn right walking towards Derby Lodge.

Turn Left just before Derby Lodge and follow the road up to where it splits, taking the right hand road.

Follow the Road as it bends round to the right, following the sign for “Horsepool Hill Woodland” and then turn left following the sign for “Hall Site”.

You will soon reach the Site of Shipley Hall. Feel free to walk around and explore before taking the path that leads towards to building shaped like a tower.

Follow the path around the ‘tower’. At the point where the grass ends and there is a large stump on your right take the path into the wooded area.

At the end of the path, where it meets the Shipley Lane turn left in the direction of Mapperley Reservoir.

At the bottom of the road turn right, in the direction of the car park then bear left before turning left at the ticket machine, taking the path towards Mapperley reservoir.

At the reservoir turn right, following the soil path as it runs alongside water. (Ensure you keep your dog(s) on a lead as there may be anglers.)

Eventually the path will lead you into a wooded area called John Wood. You will come to a split in the path. Take the path on the right and cross the small bridge before immediately turning right at marker “18”.

At the end of the path you emerge from the woods and arrive at Bell Lane. Turn right and follow Bell Lane for about 500 meters.

On your left will be the Coppice Hill Bridleway which has a large green gate and a sign marked “visitor centre” and “Information” at the start. Take this route back towards the visitor centre.

After a little under 400 meters you will come to the Cinderhill area. Join the path bearing left.

Follow this path and it will bring you back to the Visitors Centre and the car park.

This walk is for illustrative purposes only. The Amber Valley Voice takes no responsibility for anyone who chooses to follow this route and encourages all walkers to obey all byelaws and signs and to respect the area they are walking in, ensuring they pick up all dog mess and obey the countryside code at all times. In this day and age the main focal point in a home is still the heat source whether it is Gas, Electric <ires or wood burning stoves. Here at Belper Gas Showrooms we are proud to say that we have some of the most ef<icient gas <ires on the market today with the likes of NU-Flame and other main manufacturers boasting ef<iciency ratings of 74.4 percent (BSI Veri<ied) on Gas <ires giving a fantastic 4.7k of heat. As if that wasn’t enough we are also the sole supplier in Derbyshire of THE MOST EFFICIENT LOG BURNING STOVE IN THE WORLD; The Burley Fireball. We have been dealers for Burley products for many years now and we were delighted when we were approached by them to be stockists for this amazing product. The technology behind this is called <ireball technology, which is achieved by the logs going through 4 combustion processes creating a vortex giving a massive 89.1% ef<iciency, which makes the stove burn wood very simply and cheaply. Just to illustrate the ef<iciency of these Stoves during product approval, when the European test house was measuring the emissions from the Burley stove, the combustion was so clean they assumed that their gas analyser had broken and sent it away for recalibration. Feel free to pop in when you’re passing and see what we have on show.

South Normanton Safer Neighbourhood update

Teachers go on patrol with police in the Alfreton area Teachers from schools in South Normanton and Pinxton have been out on police patrol to help build bridges with bobbies and catch out any misbehaving pupils. Headteachers Martyn Cooper, of Frederick Gent School, South Normanton, and Matthew Pendleton, of Kirkstead Junior School in Pinxton, joined of<icers from the Alfreton area on Friday, April 20. PC Matthew Copestake was one of the of<icers who went on patrol with the teachers. He said: “The aim behind the joint patrols was to give the teachers an insight into local policing, the issues faced and also the ways in which we deal with anti-social behaviour. As well as helping to forge good relationships with local schools, teachers are also able to identify familiar faces and build up a picture of youngsters’ behaviour outside of school.” The initiative has already been used successfully in other parts of Derbyshire and further joint teacher and police patrols may be organised in the future. To contact your local Safer Neighbourhood policing team call 101, the non-emergency number for Derbyshire police or visit the website www.derbyshire.police.uk (Picture L-R: PCSO Vicky Hill, PCSO Tony Payne-Wright, PC Pete Wilbourne, PC Matthew Copestake)

Leabrooks Interiors is now fully open for business in a room just above the main Exhibition Space in Leabrooks Gallery! The room used to be just another exhibition space and before that - about six years ago - the hay loft, a des. res. for squirrel squatters. Today it has a new and pristine identity, (the squirrels were evicted long ago): a white Adams style ire place and some tasteful decoration have set a far more sophisticated scene! The furniture, pottery, art work, cushions, lighting, decorative and storage items - all of excellent quality - look well placed: ‘right at home’! There is a small selection of covetable furniture and then there are sumptuous cushions, inspiring candles and all those quirky little items which give a home style. The room fragrances - candles, diffusers and sprays by Pairfum - are sensational scents in beautiful packaging while the throws, woven in Scotland, offer exceptional colour and comfort! Come and see what we have to offer during the Derbyshire Arts Weekend on June 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. Seven artists will be working in the gallery and there will be special offers on the interior section. Leabrooks Interiors has de initely got style - for you!

Welcome sunny weather, gardening and...back pain! Sound familiar? It's the wonderful combination of the relief of being outside and full of the joys of spring, and the contrast of a body that hasn't done this kind of activity for months on end, perhaps is more used to sitting at a desk, in a car, or on a sofa ... and is complaining! But it need not be this way. Just a few simple precautions can reduce the likelihood of our Derbyshire clay soil getting the better of us and help us feel confident in gardening throughout the summer without repercussion. First of all-see it as the exercise that it is- and warm up. That doesn't necessarily mean jogging down the street and stretching (though it may help) but simply avoid the harsh transition between relaxing Sunday morning papers and digging trenches! For instance, start with the lighter tasks which don't involve prolonged bending or heavy lifting and progress to the heavier tasks. Even then, avoid hours flexed in one position weeding or planting and intersperse it with carrying around tools and clearing rubbish, as well as regular tea breaks- after all, it is supposed to be a leisurely activity isn't it? Regularly straighten, stretch and walk around and try to avoid positions with one leg forwards whilst stooping, as this often strains the sacro-iliac joint giving rise to low back pain. If you have to do this, then make sure you put the opposite foot forwards for a while: you are using opposite muscles, giving one half of your body a wellearned break and creating more muscular balance in your body. This in turn helps prevent strain on joints and it is often the small simple actions which avoid injuries. Plan when to finish and stick to it! That way you can wind down rather than doing heavy tasks when you are tired, which is increasing your chance of injury. Stretching afterwards will promote a good blood flow, rejuvenating tired muscles and reducing lactic acid build-up and subsequent aches. So a few simple steps can make a real difference. In contrast, someone who says they only bent to put on their socks, but is now in agony, often has done the damage previously - for example, the preceding day...gardening! DVD Review - The Iron Lady(12A)

It’s fair to say that Margaret Thatcher is a somewhat divisive character. But no matter what your political af<iliations this is a <ilm that will absorb most viewers, not least because of the stunning performance of Meryl Streep, which deservedly won her the Oscar for best actress. The <ilm joins Maggie in more recent times, long after her heyday. But now the Iron Lady is a lot more fragile and is haunted by the ghosts of her past and hallucinations of her husband Dennis, who is played by the excellent Jim Broadbent. The <ilm <lashes back through her life, beginning in her childhood where the role her father played in<luencing her political views can be clearly seen, through to meeting Dennis, then her rise to power and her tumultuous years in of<ice and ending in her eventual painful resignation. Whilst sympathetic to the person, this <ilm does not look to put much of a spin on the rights or wrongs of Margaret Thatchers politics. Instead it paints a pro<ile of a woman who despite her massive impact on British society struggled to develop the personal connections that nurture us through our lives, leaving her isolated and disconnected from the society we now live in.

Gardeners Calendar - May

29

It’s getting to that exciting time of year where summer bedding plants are starting to take off at last; but you still need to be careful with them – given the weather we’ve had it’s worth waiting until it looks like there’s some consistent days of <ine weather before you plant them out – cold wet can really knock growth back. It seems cruel, but now’s the time to nip out the growing tips of plants to make them produce more bushy growth – we all desperately want to see the <irst <lowers but if you’re cruel to be kind you’ll <inish up with a much bigger display later. If you’re potting up plants like geraniums don’t put them in too big a pot – just go into the next size once the roots are starting to grow out of the existing one. Too much space for the roots means they’ll be working to spread out looking for nutrition rather than putting their main effort into producing <lowers. Good roots are healthy but we’re really after the <lowers...

Top Tip If you’re potting your plants on – into containers for example, don’t feed for the <irst six weeks or so. Most compost you can buy has nutrition included – you don’t want to overfeed and <inish up with lots of foliage and fewer <lowers.
