Welcome to Amber Valley Voice I can’t believe how quickly time has flown since Christmas, we are in February and it only seems like the blink of an eye since I was tucking into a big piece of Owen Taylors finest Turkey!! Still, it all means that Spring is around the corner!!

Don’t forget to mention the Voice when you use any of the companies in this Magazine

We have some new advertisers this month and some great offers, check out Heathers Valentines offers at Body & Sole and Sylhet Spice offering some free starters. We’ve also got a couple of reader recommends for Ovenblaster and B Sole Plumbing which are well worth a read as reliable people are worth their weight in gold and although I know our advertisers are fab, you don’t have to just take my word for it! Finally, you may have noticed the advert for us saying ‘coming soon’? We are having a rebrand over the next month or so...keep your eyes peeled, as we will still be the same but just with a snazzier look!! Quality Solicitors Chapman and Chubb Competition Question: ‘What is the only ground for divorce’? Answers by 1/3/14 to info@ambervalleyvoice.co.uk

Advice to help you keep your vehicle secure Although it is a busy time of year, there are a few steps people should remember to help ensure they stay safe and secure:

 Lock and secure your vehicle whenever you

leave it. Double check your key fob has worked. Most car thieves will be opportunist; they will try door handles and target vehicles where they can get easy access.. Don’t leave your vehicle unlocked with the keys in the ignition while it warms up on a frosty morning. It would just take a few seconds for someone to jump in and drive away. Never leave items on show, whether it is an expensive laptop or loose change. Even bags or clothing can be tempting to a thief in case there is something inside. Remove all valuables from your vehicle whenever possible. This includes laptops, sat-navs, music players and also tools. If you wouldn’t want to lose it, remove it.

 Avoid leaving valuables in your boot, glove box    

or under the front seat. Thieves know where to look. Wipe away any suction marks left behind by sat-nav or phone holders. They leave a clue that valuables could be inside. If your vehicle doesn’t have an alarm, get one fitted and use other deterrents such as a steering lock. Look after your car keys at all times. At home, make sure they’re not on show and out of reach of a window, door or letterbox. Have anti-theft screws fitted to your number plates. This can prevent them from being stolen and a thief using your details to steal petrol, avoid traffic fines or even commit crime.

Our local residents are our eyes and ears. If you see something suspicious, report it to us there and then, no matter how minor you think it might be. Your call could prevent a neighbour from suffering a crime, or could help officers to catch an offender. If you would like more advice, or to contact your local Safer Neighbourhood policing team then please call 101, the non emergency number for Derbyshire police or visit the website: www.derbyshire.police.uk.

Reader Recommends Mr Partridge from Alfreton has been telling me about the good job that Bryan at B Sole Plumbing did, when installing a new boiler along with a magnaclean;

“It was quite surprising how much sludge was in the pipes. Bryan did a great job, he kept us really well informed, was really clean, tidy and very efficient. He was with us for 3 solid days and we’re sure that the work he did will make a real difference to our heating bill.” To Advertise please call Emily on 01773 604178 or 07891 639638

12 At this time of the year it requires a stout heart and a strong will to be a dog walker and I know that many of you save up some of the walks until the weather improves to get the most out of them. Well however you use the walks I hope you find this months enjoyable whatever the weather. 4 1/2 mile circular walk from Morton via Padley Wood A moderate walk with a varied terrain. The route should take around 2 1/2 hours. There are some up hill sections and the there are some stretches along country roads, so take care. At this time of the year there are some uneven and muddy parts so a good pair of boots or wellies is highly recommended.

1. Begin at the church on Church Lane in Morton. On street parking is normally available nearby. With the church on your right head along Church Lane, before following the road around to the right to continue along Higham Lane. 2. Walk along this country road for just under 600 meters, taking care to watch out for traffic as there are no footpaths. The roads bends right then left twice, on the second time take a footpath sign for ‘Mickley Lane’ on your right, between a road sign and a gate. 3. Follow this path into a field a cross the stile and continue ahead past a pylon on your right. At the corner of the filed pass through the hedge and carry on ahead to cross three fields via the stiles available. 4. Cross a stile and then at the corner of the next field pass through a gate before turning right to pass through another gate. Carry on ahead towards a metal gate marked ‘footpath’. Gardeners Calendar - February

It might not feel like it, but the garden is starting to come to life about now, so there’s plenty to do. Cover strawberry plants with fleece to help earlier fruiting. Plant bare root raspberries and prune existing plants back to one inch above ground level. You should also be pruning gooseberries and blueberries before the end of the month. Cut back ornamental grasses which you left for winter colour/ structure. Plus lots of summer flowering leaf-dropping shrubs, such as buddleia, hydrangea, hardy fuchsias and lavatera can be pruned now. – But don’t prune spring flowering shrubs – leave till after they’ve flowered.

Top Tip

If you’re thinking of putting up bird boxes, this is the last chance to do it before garden favourites such as blue tits start looking for a new home.

Book Review - The Last Runaway by Tracy Chevalier

In Tracy Chevalier’s The Last Runaway you get two stories in one. Honor Bright, a young Quaker girl decides to emigrate to America with her sister rather than stay in 1850’s Dorset where the man she thought she was to marry decides on another partner. She’s Chevalier’s first runaway and her attempts to settle in a frontiers town farming community in Ohio make for a powerful narrative.

her duty to the family she marries into threatens to take her in a different direction. It’s a fascinating story – the quilting Quakers of Ohio don’t emerge from it with their reputation enhanced; but there’s some good bits of historical background – as you’d expect from the author of The Girl with the Pearl Earring and five other historical novels.

Some of the most powerful characters are not those from a The other runaway is a slave religious background. Belle the woman escaping through the milliner and her slave hunter “underground railroad” from the brother Donavan bound out of the subjugation of life in the Southern page and Chevalier makes you states to freedom in Canada. As a sympathise with Honor’s dilemma although woman who finds slavery morally and you might feel that she needs a good shove emotionally repugnant, Honor’s conscience sometimes. pushes her towards helping those slaves she comes into contact with including “the last The story ends with a new beginning runaway” - the one who changes her life. But – maybe a story Chevalier will return to?
