Welcome to Amber Valley Voice Welcome to the January edition of AVV , hope you had a great Christmas and New Year?

Don’t forget to mention the Voice when you use any of the companies in this Magazine

Now, you may have noticed the date change?! Well after 3 years of delivering in the middle of the month and just after everyone had got used to it….from this month onwards, we have moved to delivering at the beginning of each month! We decided that it makes more sense than having two months on the front cover which was causing some confusion, so lets see how it goes!! We have another bumper month with all the usual suspects offering discounts and exclusive offers, such as Body & Sole, Derbyshire Rubber Roofing and Seals Fodder Room to name a few but we also have a brilliant article from Leigh at Kleeford Coin Auctions, an exclusive offer from Sylhet Spice and of course, the competition from QS Chapman and Chubb, which was a big hit last month (pg 26), don’t forget to send in your answers to info@ambervalleyvoice.co.uk. We are still after those Facebook likes as we have a £50 voucher and £50 worth of adverts to give away to a reader and a business, so please log on and like us at Amber Valley Voice. Happy Reading and we’ll see you at the beginning of Feb! Emily x

Carla Recommends Our very own Carla wanted to let everyone know about the excellent job that Steven at Ovenblaster did this month;

I recently sold my old kitchen and wanted to spruce up the oven ready for its new owner. I’ve never had an oven professionally cleaned before and can honestly say that I was amazed with the results as it looked brand new!!

Steven was very friendly, the price was less than I had anticipated and I would recommend him to anyone wishing to add back some sparkle into their oven. Thanks Steven! Don’t forget to mention the Amber Valley Voice when responding to Ads

Book Review - The Casual Vacancy by J K Rowling Harry Potter it ain’t. JK Rowling’s first book aimed specifically at adults (although no doubt HP had as many grown-up fans as children) takes on a new set of everyday baddies, this time lurking behind the suburban front door. The Casual Vacancy is a modern morality tale. In Pagford, a seemingly idyllic country town, we get to sneak in behind the blinds and the net curtains. There’s small town infighting, class war, snobbery and jealousies, horrible teens, casual racism and the occasional good guy – Rowling gives us British society seen through the election of a minor politician. Given the way most of us feel about politicians, you might be wondering if it’s your kind of thing. But it’s quite sharp and biting and it also pushes back against some of the worst assumptions of the tabloids

about people who’ve finished up with the sticky end of life’s lollipop. At the same time there are people we can all recognise, some of them harder to like than others, some of them wincingly familiar. JK Rowling has always been very good at showing us the best and the worst in people and this tale builds on that theme. As you’d expect, the story bowls along at a fine pace. Rowling’s social conscience shines through, sometimes too brightly perhaps and some of the characters maybe do wear their hearts on their sleeves a bit too obviously. But it’s a fine story, one it’s easy to get drawn into and hard to put down (so maybe it does have similarities to the HP books.) And despite lots of funny observations about the way we live; it’s quite moving and a bit shocking in places. Interesting to see where she goes next.

12 This month we head to Denby for a fantastic walk that takes you past the famous Pottery Centre and through some lovely countryside for some cracking views. As ever there are plenty of opportunities to let your dog run off the lead but there are a few stretches of road and some country lanes so take care and use pavements when possible. 4 1/2 mile circular walk around Denby A moderate and attractive walk for you and your dog. The route should take around 2 – 2 1/2 hours. There are some uphill sections and the terrain is varied with some uneven and muddy parts, which will worsen in the winter months so a good pair of boots or wellies is highly recommended

‘A penny saved is a penny earned’ Leigh Rose, a local coin enthusiast, author and business owner of Kleeford Coin Auctions, tells us why it is time to empty out those drawers and find those hidden treasures. Please note that no bribery took place in the writing of this article!!

The results in a recent nationwide survey showed that coincollecting is the second-best form of long-term investment with only stocks & shares bettering it. I wonder how many of you have squirreled away collections of coins or medals left to you by a relative or friend? If you have, now might be the time to find out what they are worth. I offer a free valuation service to all readers of Amber Valley Voice. This can be done in your own home or on my premises, it all depends on where you will be most comfortable. At the end of the valuation there is no obligation to offer the items for auction & certainly no ‘arm-twisting’ by me to do so. You might be surprised at what your coins/medals are worth, & they don’t need to be a precious metal to be valuable – like all antiques, date & condition are all important. Only recently a local reader of the Amber Valley Voice contacted me for a valuation which took place in his own home where he discovered that just one of the coins which had been left to him was worth over £600 & no, it wasn’t a gold piece.

gladly give advice on a single coin or medal if you so wish. Also, if you are a collector why not give me a call to request one of my auction catalogues?

So if you have a business to promote So please feel free to contact me if you locally then give her a call – you won’t be have an item or items you would like me disappointed. to value. Gardeners Calendar - January This time of year is often about damage limitation. You don’t need telling it’s the coldest and wettest part of the year – the trick is to minimise its effect on your garden. If you’ve planted new trees or bushes at the start of winter it’s worth checking that gales haven’t loosened the roots, so heel them in if necessary. A thick dry mulch will also help protect roots. Inspect any dahlia or canna tubers which you’re overwintering in the greenhouse. Watch out for rot – they don’t want to be too moist; but if they’re too dry they’ll be no use for planting in Spring. Make sure there are no fallen leaves around alpines. They die if they’re left damp for too long. If you’ve got bald patches in amongst them cover with grit to encourage new growth. At the same time watch out for blackspot or mildew on winter pansies. They’re hardy, but they still need care. Destroy any affected leaves.

Top Tip Where your hellebores are coming through cut back old leaves to give those little flowers a boost from the extra daylight.
