All your Will questions answered What is a Will?

Wills - Probate Powers Of Attorney

A Will is a legally binding document that sets out your wishes ensuring your loved ones are taken care of after your death. By leaving a Will you can state who gets your property and money when you die therefore preventing unnecessary distress at an already difficult time for your family and friends. It also allows you to choose guardians for any child under 18 years old to ensure they are bought up in a safe and loving environment.

Why not do it yourself? This may look like a cheaper option but simple mistakes could prove costly in the long run as your Will could be What happens if I die without a Will? challenged or even disregarded altogether. Advice on rogue traders and preventing doorstep crime by Derbyshire Police

15

Police throughout the Amber Valley and across Derbyshire are raising awareness of doorstep crime and rogue traders, and how to help protect yourself or your friends, neighbours and relatives. Doorstep crime is more likely to affect elderly or vulnerable residents, with offenders taking advantage of their good or trusting nature. While most callers at your home will be genuine, and doorstep crime does not happen regularly, we just want to remind people to be cautious at the door and to report any suspicious activity to the police.

Doorstep crime can refer to: Rogue Traders A rogue trader will cold call at homes to say they have noticed some repairs or gardening work needs doing urgently, and then offer to carry out the work. They may also say they have materials left over from an earlier job. While they may negotiate what might seem a reasonable price initially, they will often hike up the fee once the job has been completed or demand more cash to buy materials. Always get a second opinion before agreeing to work; go to a reputable company or someone a neighbour can recommend. Why not use Derbyshire County Council’s Trusted Trader Scheme? Call the council on 08456 058 058 and find local traders who agree to do a good job at a fair price.

Bogus Callers A bogus caller will be someone who calls at your home unannounced, and claim to be an official or working for a company. They may say they are from the water, gas or electricity board; that they work for the council, in health or social services, or could even claim to be a police officer. They will usually give a reason or an excuse as to why they need to go inside your home, or may want you to step outside with them. They might also try to keep you talking. They will be looking to distract a homeowner to make it easier for them to steal cash, and could work in pairs.

Pedlars These are people who call at your home offering to sell household goods or cleaning products they are carrying with them. By law a pedlar must carry a pedlar’s certificate, which is issued by the police. Always ask to see their certificate. The best advice to reduce doorstep crime is ‘Not Sure? Don’t open the door’. If you don’t know who is at the door, then don’t feel you have to open it. If you do, always make sure any other doors and windows are closed first and use the door chain. Always ask to see the caller’s ID and check that they are legitimate by calling the company on a number from the telephone directory or a bill. Genuine callers won’t mind and will understand how important it is for you to feel safe. If you have any concerns about a doorstep caller, either at your own home or a neighbours, contact Derbyshire police on 101 so that officers can check everything is in order. If it is an emergency, or a crime is being committed, the number to dial is always 999. To Advertise please call Emily on 01773 604178 or 07891 639638

Book Review - Merivel, a Man of His Time by Rose Tremain

There are many kinds of historical novel, from the bodice ripper to the thriller, plus serious pieces of writing such as Hilary Mantel’s Man Booker Prize winners. Merivel, a Man of His Time by Rose Tremain, takes a different route – the story of a physician and courtier who owes his place in the world purely to his ability to amuse King Charles II, known as the Merry Monarch thanks to the hedonism of his court.

romps. There are plenty of dark moments among the exuberance and wit; Merivel has some pretty questionable morals at times, plus a great capacity for attracting (and often overcoming) disaster of every kind. He’s a paradoxical human being, not a hero and his tolerance of human frailty, not just his own, is an underlying mood of both books. He’s the court jester who can not only break his own heart, but ours too. You also get lots of insights into the society of the time; alongside the ridiculous excess there is the squalor behind the glitter at the Versailles court; or a crash course into what they did before anaesthetics, (you might want to hide behind the sofa during that bit).

Merivel is an immensely flawed human being, but also one who is hugely good hearted, joyful and likeable. He was first introduced in Tremain’s novel Restoration, and while you don’t need to have read the first book to enjoy the second, they are both worth the time spent on them. Sir Robert Merivel may be a man of his time But these books are not just Restoration – but he’s a man we’d recognise in ours.

Do you have something to shout about? Are you a local sports club with results to tell the community about or looking for new recruits? Are you running a community event that needs promoting or are you raising money for charity? Are you a community leader that needs to liaise with the wider community?
