History Abounds in Hope Valley - remembered in photographs by Peter Nutkins

Exactly one hundred years on locals dressed up in period costume to remember this important event in local history. The day started off with a lively re-enactment by local residents that captured the passion of the bitter dispute. Relatives of those who played a key role in the original strike took part, and children from Eyam School had made banners, even using the soles of their feet to create a pattern! Following rousing tunes from the Castleton Silver Band, a procession made up of residents, school children, local groups and trade unions made their way from Eyam to Stoney Middleton. Because of the rain over recent weeks, the path was a little muddy. Consequently, we all got our shoes nice and dirty. The warm welcome from residents in Stoney was much appreciated, as was the sun which had now burned its way through the earlier cloud. After a short update from officials, the procession made its way to The Nook.

Nestled in Hope Valley, in the Peak District, are the villages of Eyam and Stoney Middleton. Eyam is well known in history as the ‘Plague Village’. In 1665 and 1666 the Black Death ravaged the little village. Because of the risk to the local area, residents bravely locked themselves in their village, in a remarkable self-sacrifice. More drama was to follow when one hundred years ago the two villages were locked in a long-running dispute between the Boot and Shoe Maker Company Owners and their employees, which lasted for more than two years. On Saturday, April 14, 2018, saw the centenary of the church parade and service which took place about 6 weeks after the strike of 1918 started, and was remembered by local residents. The original parade was organised by the Reverend John Riddlesden of St. Martins church, and Johnnie Buckle of the boot and shoe workers union, NUBSO.

10

Don’t forget to mention Voice Magazines when responding to the Ads

Inside St Martin’s Church, a commemorative service was held, with fascinating readings about the strike from children, a local shoemaker and other key members of the community about the strike. The Reverend James Croft reflected on the original sermon, which was based on the question in the Book of Genesis ‘Am I my brother’s keeper?’ Afterwards, we all enjoyed an exhibition about the events one hundred years ago and some freshly baked pizza. The exhibition is available for use by local schools, and local interested groups. Please contact: stoneymiddletonheritagecentre@gmail.com for more information. All in all, a day very much to remember. If you are looking to capture your event in photographs then please get in contact.

WE POWER SWEEP WITH The industry approved system

The Borgias are famous for treachery, murder, poisoning and power. Which makes them prime candidates for historical novels. But Sarah Dunant does more than give us the infamy and vice. In the Name of the Family, the latest in her series of five books about Renaissance Italy, gives us the sounds and smells, sins and virtues of a world ruled by one of the most godless Popes in history, Alexander VI. His daughter Lucrezia Borgia may be best known for poisoning husbands, but her life was complex. She had many husbands – she was a woman at a time when marriage in the upper echelons of European society was about forging alliances. But the one husband she loved was murdered – by her brother Cesare. Cesare was power crazed, rampaging across Italy, conquering city after city; but his driven lust for warfare may have had something to do with syphilis, a common illness at that time. Dunant does for Italy’s Renaissance what Hilary Mantel did for Thomas Cromwell in Wolf Hall. Her stories are backed by impeccable historical scholarship but she has a great capacity for creating very human characters out of myth and for brilliantly giving a sense of time and place. Her writing sparkles. This is a fascinating and irresistible book and it finishes too quickly.

Proud to be serving the Peak District for over 20 years

Slimming World Recipe Black Forest Ice Cream

Domestic & Commercial Remo al Ser ices

Now Summer is here it’s time for fun in the sun and that includes an indulgent ice-cream or two. If you want to stay on plan why not whip (or beat) up these fabulous deserts for a delicious treat.

Method:

1. Spoon the yogurt into a mixing bowl and stir in sweetener to taste. Transfer the mixture to a large freezerproof container and place in the coldest part of your freezer. Allow to freeze for 1½ hours until the mixture is slushy. Beat well to break up the ice crystals. 2. Meanwhile chop the cherries into small pieces, mix in the Kirsch, then cover and chill until required. 3. Place the fromage frais in a bowl and add the vanilla essence and cherries and Kirsch, then fold into the ice-cream mixture. Return to the freezer. Beat the mixture two or three more times at 30-40 minute intervals - this helps make a smoother, less icy ice cream. Then cover, seal and freeze until solid. 4. Take the ice cream out of the freezer around 30 minutes before you want to serve it so it scoops easily. If you like, sprinkle over a little grated chocolate (1½ Syns per level teaspoon) before serving. For more information visit www.slimmingworld.co.uk

Serves: 4 Prep time: 15 minutes plus freezing and standing time Syns per serving: 2

Ingredients:

• 4 x 175g pots Mullerlight cherry yogurt (or any other Free cherry yogurt) • 3 level tbsp sweetener • 110g drained canned black cherries in juice • 1 tbsp Kirsch • 150g fat-free natural fromage frais • 1 tsp vanilla essence • 1 level tsp grated chocolate, to serve (optional)

Take a deep breath and slowly exhale. Go on, just humour me. And again - in and out. One more time, gently in and slowly out… How do you feel? Calm? Still? When deciding what to write about for our very first Health and Wellbeing article I was spoilt for choice: healthy eating, meditation, exercise, yoga, positive thinking, mindfulness, all of which are so valuable. However I wanted to focus on the most simple – Breathing! Breathing is our most basic and fundamental need and yet there is so little time spent on how we breathe, improving the breath and even enjoying the breath. I am a teacher and student of yoga and meditation and so spend lots of my time focussing on the breath yet there are still many moments when I am so caught up in everyday life I have to remind myself to find time to simply breathe and enjoy! Even as I write this article I am reminding myself to stop and just breathe.

Benefits of Mindful Breathing: • • • • •

Helps you notice moments of beauty or simple pleasures Can bring an instant feeling of calm

Helps focus the mind bringing about higher brain functioning

When practiced regularly, reduces stress and anxiety Brings enjoyment to simple activities

So here is your opportunity. When you see something beautiful, when you have some time to yourself or maybe when you’re feeling busy and overwhelmed, perhaps your computer is taking a while to start up or you’re waiting for the kettle to boil. Take a few minutes to focus your attention on the breath,

noticing how you breathe and enjoy some time where all you need to do is breathe.

Mindful Breathing exercise: Sitting or standing with a straight back take an easy and gentle inhale (rather than a really deep breath)

Hold for just a split second and then slowly exhale, either through the nose or mouth which ever feels good for you. Feel a moment of stillness at the end of your exhale and take another breath in.

Keep repeating this process, enjoying each breath and feeling a sense of calm and tranquillity. I hope you find this month’s article on Mindful Breathing useful - if you have any feedback on it or requests for what you would like to see in future please do get in touch and let me know! Until next month, Happy Breathing!

Gardener’s Calendar ~ June 2018

Everything you have been nurturing in the greenhouse or on windowsills is safe to go out into the garden now. It’s very unusual to get a frost this time in the year, and all the summer bedding and veggies should romp away. This includes the likes of courgettes, cucumbers and French beans. Pinch out side-shoots on tomatoes to make stronger plants and more fruit. Shrubs which have already flowered – such as forsythia, mock orange and flowering currant should be pruned back now so they have plenty of time to grow for next season – they flower on the previous year’s growth. Cut back lower down to strong young shoots and every year take about a quarter of old stems right back. There is often a gap in flowering in the June garden. Spring flowers have gone over and summer plants are still to get into their stride. If you’re looking for something to fill, you could help wildlife by scouring the garden centre for plants which bees love such as borage, foxgloves and hardy geraniums. Most herbs are great for insects and have the advantage of being useful for us too.

Top Tip!

Roses love bananas. Skins that is. They are rich in potassium and just the thing for a rose snack. Lay on the ground round the root and cover in about 3cm of soil.

ULTIMATE SHOWERS

by Paul Bland, Director of Ultimate Bathrooms

design | supply | fit | relax

In recent years we have undoubtedly become a nation of people who prefer to shower. Baths are being replaced with big walk-in shower trays or tiled wetbases and at the same time customers are demanding a bigger and better showering experience. The choice of showers available these days is immense but the new generation of Smart Digital Showers is revolutionising the way we shower. The flow is controlled by a push of a button outside so you never have to get wet until you are ready. You can also divert the water from a fixed rain head to a slide rail from outside the shower. There are many different ranges on the market but the latest Q Edition digital shower from Aqualisa takes invigoration to a new level. This gives you the ability to choose from a range of

five pre-set experiences to suite your mood and lifestyle as well as the option to create and save your own showering preferences so you can repeat your own perfect shower every time. There is a warm up feature which will hold the water at your desired temperature until you are ready to start and even a proximity sensor that reduces flow when you step away from the shower to save water. You may not be able to control the weather outside but inside going digital will give you the perfect invigorating shower every time at the push of a button. Call us on 01629 813252 or call in to our showroom behind Fatface on Matlock Street, Bakewell to discuss your requirements and we will find the right choice for you.
