Editor’s Message It’s Ice Cream month, yay! Well I say ‘yay’, I like ice cream but it doesn’t like me!! However, I like what it symbolises, i.e. warm sunny days and light evenings, BBQ’s and a Trifle (see Slimming World recipe) to complement the al fresco dining!
Don’t forget to mention the ‘Voice’ when you use any of the companies in this magazine
Thank you to everyone who entered the Dogs Unleashed competition last month. As I’m sending into print, it hasn’t happened yet but it looks like it’s going to be a corking weekend. We have a load of new local advertisers this month (too many to mention by name!) as well as all the usual fantastic information, editorials and articles such as Peter Nutkins and his brilliant tips on helping you to take better pictures, so why not take the magazine out into the garden with a tipple of your choice and have a good read?! We’re getting really good feedback on the magazines now and we’re glad to hear that you are using it so much, but if you have any other information that you would like to see in future, please do not hesitate to let us know. And don’t forget, we offer highly subsidised rates for registered charities and not for profit community adverts! Finally, we are still looking to fill our last distribution vacancies, so if you know anyone that may be interested, please get in contact, we would be pleased to hear from you. See you next month,
Happy Reading!

Slimming World Recipe BeRRy FRuit Jelly tRiFle Desserts, like busses, come in two’s. So, following last month’s delicious ice cream we bring you a lip-smacking trifle. My Granny’s favourite dessert is trifle and at less than 5 syns a serving I know she would be all over this one.
Serves: 10 Prep time: 15 minutes plus cooling and chilling Syns per serving: 4 ½
Method:
1. Make the jelly according to the packet instructions and allow to cool. 2. Place the fruit in the base of a 2-litre glass bowl and pour over the cooled jelly mixture. Chill for 4-5 hours or until just set. 3. When the jelly is set, pour the custard over the top. 4. Whisk the fromage frais with the vanilla essence and sweetener and, using a spoon, swirl it over the custard. 5. Decorate the trifle with the orange zest and dust lightly with the cocoa powder. For more information visit www.slimmingworld.co.uk
Ingredients: • 4 x 11.5g sachets sugar free raspberry jelly crystals • 800g mixed fresh berries, plus extra to garnish • 850g ready-made low-fat custard • 600g fat free natural fromage frais • 1 tsp vanilla essence • 2 tbsp sweetener • Finely grated orange zest and 1 level tsp cocoa powder, to decorate

PeTeR’S PHOTOgRAPHY PAge Hi, I’m Peter, your friendly local photographer, hoping to help capture your events and memories, whether you are looking for a beautiful portrait, to capture the romance of your wedding or to promote your business endeavours. However, I wanted to use this opportunity to share with you some of my experiences and knowledge each month.
IMPROVE YOUR PHOTOS TIP #1 Leading Lines
Taking photos is great fun, and is an easy way of recording what you are doing, who you are with, and what you can see. You may have an expensive digital camera, a treasured film camera, or just your mobile phone. Regardless, photography is a brilliant way to get creative. Millions of photos are taken every day. To make your photos stand out I have some simple tips. Like many things in life, a little bit of effort will make a big difference to the end product. However, after just a few goes at this tip you will find it becomes easier, and you start ‘seeing’ great pictures before you even lift your camera! A Leading Line leads the viewer’s eye towards your subject... 1. Decide what you want people to see first in your photo 2. Find any lines that can point to that part of the photo 3. Avoid any lines that point to something else
Anything can be a line. Here are two photos I took in the Peak District. I have drawn on leading lines pointing to my subject. At Three Shire Heads the river makes a line, so I stood in a position where it would point to the bridge and tree (my subject). On Mam Tor the sunrise was my subject, so I spent some time making sure as many lines as possible pointed towards it. For professional photography services please get in contact. Peter Nutkins

Let’s get positive...
We all want to be happy don’t we? Well you can be, right now! If you choose to be!
Your greatest power is your ability to choose a positive thought over a negative thought. The language we use and the thoughts we choose determine our mood and emotions. So, although it isn’t always easy, when we really pay attention to what we are saying and thinking we can start to take control over our emotions and levels of happiness. Perhaps when you have a list of jobs to do you might say “Oh no I’ve got to ….” Replace this thought with “I am really looking forward to ….” Or “I am going to choose to make time for….” I was asked recently: But what happens if you really don’t want to do something? A very good question! I used this example to illustrate: One day I had a long drive home and had been thinking “oh no this afternoon I have a long boring 3-hour drive” so I mentally changed the thought to “this afternoon I can enjoy some peaceful driving through beautiful countryside listening to my favourite music on the way back to my lovely home.” It was surprising what a difference I felt both in the run up to my journey home and during the journey itself; I had music on, singing along, stopping off to buy some fresh food for when I arrived home and feeling grateful to arrive home safely. So if you’re not feeling positive about something then change that thought! This also extends to who we think about and what we think about them. So next time you have a negative emotion towards another person either change your
thought about them or think about something else entirely … you can control what goes on in your head! However hard this may sound it really is possible, but only if you WANT to choose a positive thought and let go of the negative. You might think that surely everyone wants to let go of negative emotions but sometimes we hold onto anger or upset because we feel it will change a situation, that we have a right to those feelings or we just do not realise our emotions are something we can control. It is only when we come to realise that we are only harming ourselves with our negative thoughts that we really start to want to change them. And we can!
Positive Thinking Exercise:
Choose 3 things you are not feeling positive about and DECIDE to change how you look at them, write down 3 positive affirmations to replace your original thought! Some examples might be: I do not like my body … “I am grateful for my happy healthy body and will look after it as best I can”
I hate my job …. “I am lucky to have a job at which I will try my best and I look forward to new career opportunities which are coming my way” My partner never cleans the house…. “My partner makes me laugh and we care about each other deeply”
I don’t have enough money … “I am grateful for the money and wealth I do have and the universe will continue to provide for me”
Wishing you all happy thoughts!

Book Review
A teenage girl goes missing while on holiday in a small village out in the countryside. The villagers join in the search, the media descends, police set up roadblocks, divers start dragging reservoirs. This may sound like a thriller, but Reservoir 13 by Jon McGregor is a story where we know very little and what we do find out emerges in an elliptical way, through the lives of the locals, rather than through a driving narrative which has a beginning middle and an end. It has to be said that if you’re looking for a simple page-turner with lots of clues and action this is probably not for you. There’s no goodies or baddies, no satisfying big revelations in the final pages. However if you’re interested in how people tick, in relationships, and in how places and events have rhythms which help them to stay the same even when huge changes are taking place all around them, you may well find it spellbinding. The book won last year’s Costa Novel award. It is, like all Jon McGregor’s books, beautifully written, a real classic, mesmerising and haunting. He writes about people with compassion and humour. This is an extraordinary and atmospheric read.

Gardener’s Calendar ~ July 2018
This part of summer is mostly about looking after what you’ve got in the garden, rather than planting new additions. The new compost with which you will probably have boosted baskets and pots at the start of the growing season will now be running short of nutrients, so it’s time to start feeding with good quality liquid plant food which is easily watered in. Feeding is also important when you’ve cut back plants which are starting to go leggy. It gives the kick they need to get producing new growth. But when you’re deadheading plants with spires, such as snapdragons or foxgloves, make sure you only take out the part that has gone over. Often they have side shoots which will grow on once the main shoot has gone. Tie your climbers such as clematis in to supports which are horizontal or even lower to encourage them to put on more growth as they try to climb.
Top Tip!
Watering is fundamental at this time of year. Water in the evening if possible. Water drops on leaves and flowers can burn in hot sunlight. Also water terracotta plant pots as well as the plants in them as they draw moisture from the soil.
