Editor’s Message As I write this it’s another scorching day but as the mags arrive on your doorstep we will be fully into the kid’s summer holidays, so now doubt the long sunny days will have come to an end! But if you’re looking for something to entertain your little ones make sure you check out What’s On Diary – there are a few good ideas in there.
Don’t forget to mention the ‘Voice’ when you use any of the companies in this magazine
And of course, we all deserve a treat ourselves! As you will see on our front covers its National Afternoon Tea Week on the 14th to the 20th August so why not take the excuse to book in for a little indulgence! So, we’ve been very busy this month! A short break up to Scotland saw us climbing and this time making it to the top (stupid snow!) of Ben Nevis, as well as quad biking and horse riding (we like to take it easy). Unfortunately, though we were unable to go white water rafting as they were running low on water – In Scotland – So you know it’s been a long hot summer! Not that I am complaining. Whilst I’m no sun worshiper I love the fact that I can get outside and explore, be active and try new things. Which is just as well as at the moment we have a few delivery rounds empty (see page 10 for more details). So, we are getting plenty of opportunity to keep fit, whilst enjoying the lovely villages and some fantastic views. Having said that, when we took over the magazine over a year and a half ago we thought it was fantastic that it went out to so many small villages and hard to reach places. This was something we were desperate to keep going, so each month we don our walking boots and deliver the empty rounds ourselves but we do struggle to cope with this alongside our other 4 magazines! So, please check out the advert on page 10 and see what rounds are available. Even if you want to give it a try for a month drop me a line and maybe you can become a part of our wonderful team of distributors. Until next month, Happy reading!

PETER’S PHoTogRaPHY PagE Hi, I’m Peter, your friendly local photographer, hoping to help capture your events and memories, whether you are looking for a beautiful portrait, to capture the romance of your wedding or to promote your business endeavours. However, I wanted to use this opportunity to share with you some of my experiences and knowledge each month.
IMPROVE YOUR PHOTOS TIP #2 Rule of Thirds
Taking photos is great fun, and is an easy way of recording what you are doing, who you are with, and what you can see. You may have an expensive digital camera, a treasured film camera, or just your mobile phone. Regardless, photography is a brilliant way for you to get creative. When most people take a picture they put whatever they are looking at right in the middle of the frame. This is a great idea, but you can create more interest by placing it slightly to one side, and slightly up or down. The ‘Rule of Thirds’ divides up a photo in three horizontally and vertically. This creates four ‘power’ points - labelled with red circles in the photo of the sunken church in Normanton, Rutland. The early morning sun hitting the bell tower was my most important part of the image. By placing important parts of your picture on those power points adds both interest and drama. The second photo is of Paul Blomfield MP in full swing representing Sheffield’s interests in Westminster. His face is on one power point, plus the company I was working for on another. 1. Decide what you want the most powerful element in your photo to be 2. Try placing that element on one of the power points (some cameras and phones actually have an overlay to help you do this) 3. Experiment with people and with places - and see what you can come up with! If you are looking for a family portrait, your wedding images, commercial and business photography, or even a workshop to help you get the most out of your camera, then please get in contact. Is contentment a good thing?
The word contentment is an interesting and nuanced term. If a person is described as “so content” you would probably think that they were in a state of happiness or satisfaction and not wishing for anything to change. If we change the phrase slightly to, “too content” it starts to feel more negative. You might start imagining a person who is perhaps lazy and without goals and aspirations. This brings me to my favourite word: santosha. Santosha for me captures a more dynamic idea of contentment. Santosha is a word from the ancient language of Sanskrit and is most commonly translated into English as meaning contentment. But the true meaning of santosha is wider than contentment as we usually understand it. Santosha means being content, happy and grateful Examples:
for what you have now whilst working towards where you want to be. When we feel content in a moment or situation it is not necessarily the same as thinking everything is perfect in our lives, we can feel contentment by feeling gratitude for the good things whilst still working towards what we want to improve or change in our lives. Exercise
Make a list of all the things you feel grateful for TODAY, big or small.
Then make a list of just 3 things you would like to work towards, try to make the language positive. Then take a few easy gentle breaths and simply allow your mind to quieten and settle. As you breathe welcome in a feeling of gratitude for what you have whilst enjoying your dreams, ambitions and goals.

Book Review
18/04/2018 10:38
The Party by Elizabeth Day is the perfect holiday book. It’s smart, it’s funny, it’s a thriller. It’s got rich people, dirty secrets, snobbery, jealousy, revenge and at its heart a Mr Ripley-like character from the wrong side of the tracks, obsessed with living a different life. What’s not to love? It probably helps if you’ve got an airport and plane journey, or a swimming pool with no interruptions so you can read it in one go, with the odd sip from a glass of something cool. The plot centres round the glam 40 th birthday of Ben Fitzmaurice, wealthy, successful, popular. Naturally Ben has invited his oldest friend Martin from their days together at public school. Martin was long ago dubbed Little Shadow, shortened to LS in true old-school style due to his devotion to his bigger, wealthier, gloriously aristocratic friend. But for some reason LS and his wife Lucy are staying at the local Premier Inn, having not been invited to overnight at the Fitzmaurice’s new stately pad. And thus starts the sinister tale of betrayal and double jeopardy. The Party may not be great literature, but it is well written, expertly plotted and with some deliciously awful characters. And as the reader you get to observe their embarrassments, delusions and downfalls. Brilliant fun and quite a decent thriller.

Celebrating Armed Forces Day In Style A celebration to show appreciation of the work of the Armed Forces was held throughout Ashmere Derbyshire today, and featured a celebration of music, residents talking about their own personal experiences and staff dressing up to hold reminiscence sessions. It was held as part of Armed Forces Day, the annual national campaign that gives everyone the opportunity to show their support for the men and women of the Armed Forces past and present, including currently serving troops, service families, reservists, veterans and cadets.
“I used to be in the RAF when I was a young girl and I loved it. It’s nice to remember and celebrate like this” Brenda, 88 from Valley Lodge in Matlock The UK Armed Forces defend the country and its interests. Every day of the year they are busy working around the world, promoting peace, delivering aid, tackling drug smugglers and providing security and fighting terrorism.
Sarah Dixon, event organiser, said: “It was an absolute pleasure for Ashmere to get involved with something that means so much to our residents, they enjoyed listening to the music and talking about their memories of serving in the armed forces” During the celebrations at Valley Lodge, there was Glenn Miller playing in the background and Sam Cave (Training manager) and Courtney Johnson (activity coordinator) dressed in authentic costumes spent time talking to the residents about their own personal experiences.

Gardener’s Calendar ~ August 2018
August is a brilliant time for hot colours. Dahlias, zinnias, heleniums, finally come into their own and if you keep on top of the deadheading they’ll keep going well into the first frosts. As sunflowers fade, you can take off the main head and cut back to a pair of leaves forcing the plant to produce smaller flowers. If your border perennials or containers are starting to look a bit weary, try watering once a week with liquid tomato food to give them a bit of late season oomph and encourage late blooming. The big boys (or girls!) of August tend to be quite tall plants and it’s useful to know that phlox is a great plant for hiding those bare legs. It has a great scent too. Japanese anemones are also a good filler. They are very reliable, provide cooler colours and will enjoy full sun or part shade.
Top Tip!
It’s difficult to keep on top of watering hanging baskets - It seems like they dry out as fast as you water them. One idea is to unhook them and leave soaking in a bucket of water overnight to give the roots a really good drink.
