AWARD WINNING CARE HOME

CARER

OF THE YEAR National Care Awards 2015

“The care and compassion the staff and management showed our mother during her stay was very good. The staff always made us very welcome and nothing was too much trouble… we feel as though we chose the right place as the care and dignity our mother received put our minds at rest. A big thank you to the The Meadows for how they looked after our mother in her last years.” (Review carehome.co.uk).

Don’t forget to mention Voice Magazines when responding to the Ads

Editor’s Message Sooo, a busy old month here at Voice HQ, as you can probably see with how jam packed we are again this month with new content features, a new competition for you all and of course, some wonderful new advertisers. Add into this mix, a little field trip to France for me (oldest exchange student ever!), a new addition to our little family (worst fosterers ever!) and our email system crashing for the best part of a week, it’s been a bit frantic but the glorious sunshine and the warmth helped! On that note, if you have sent us an email in May and you haven’t had a response, can you please re-send your email to us, we thought we caught most of them but a few may have slipped through the net and we don’t like people to think we don’t respond! Have you seen how many events we have this month? The sun’s out, so get visiting and supporting all these fabulous events in your local community and remember that the things to do section and the out and about section are free of charge to all non-profit making groups and we offer a community rate for all registered charities to advertise, so we’d love to hear from you. Check out this months competition on page 19. Win a family ticket to dogs unleashed in a few weeks’ time and if you are a dog loving family, it really is a fantastic day out. It is a quick turnaround though, so if you do want to enter, you need to send us the answer, your email and a contact telephone Don’t forget to number straight away as we need to get the tickets to you quick smart!

mention the ‘Voice’ when you use any of the companies in this magazine

Finally, just another nudge that we are looking for some distributors and also our Sales Rep job is still open, so if you know anyone that is interested in applying, just give us a call. See you next month,

Mandy’s Travel Page When it comes to natural wonders there is very little that Costa Rica doesn’t offer visitors. Travellers can experience spectacular volcanic activity in Arenal Volcano National Park, explore the unique cloud forests on the world famous Monteverde Sky Walk, dive the colourful coral reef of Cahuita National Park, or go white river rafting down the canyons of the Rio Toro river. Costa Rica is considered to possess the highest density of biodiversity of any country worldwide and its wildlife is a big draw for visitors. The numerous animal refuges and national parks allow tourists to witness creatures like sloths and various monkeys in their natural habitats, as well as marvel over the brightly coloured frogs, snakes and butterflies of the country. Thousands of people flock to Tortuguero National Park every year to watch green sea turtles hatch and set out for the ocean. The cities and towns of Costa Rica tend to take a backseat to the natural splendour of the country but there are picturesque villages and lively coastal towns to enjoy, with the resort town of Jacó and the laid-back Caribbean village of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca among the favourites. The capital city, San Jose, is a fun urban centre with plenty of opportunities to eat out, shop and party. If you would like me to put together your perfect Costa Rica trip give me a call and lets make it happen. I am available 7 days a week to take your enquiries and 24/7 whilst you are away in the event of an emergency. Slimming World Recipe Black Forest Ice Cream Now Summer is here it’s time for fun in the sun and that includes an indulgent ice-cream or two. If you want to stay on plan why not whip (or beat) up these fabulous deserts for a delicious treat.

Method:

1. Spoon the yogurt into a mixing bowl and stir in sweetener to taste. Transfer the mixture to a large freezerproof container and place in the coldest part of your freezer. Allow to freeze for 1½ hours until the mixture is slushy. Beat well to break up the ice crystals. 2. Meanwhile chop the cherries into small pieces, mix in the Kirsch, then cover and chill until required. 3. Place the fromage frais in a bowl and add the vanilla essence and cherries and Kirsch, then fold into the ice-cream mixture. Return to the freezer. Beat the mixture two or three more times at 30-40 minute intervals - this helps make a smoother, less icy ice cream. Then cover, seal and freeze until solid. 4. Take the ice cream out of the freezer around 30 minutes before you want to serve it so it scoops easily. If you like, sprinkle over a little grated chocolate (1½ Syns per level teaspoon) before serving. For more information visit www.slimmingworld.co.uk

Serves: 4 Prep time: 15 minutes plus freezing and standing time Syns per serving: 2

Ingredients:

• 4 x 175g pots Mullerlight cherry yogurt (or any other Free cherry yogurt) • 3 level tbsp sweetener • 110g drained canned black cherries in juice • 1 tbsp Kirsch • 150g fat-free natural fromage frais • 1 tsp vanilla essence • 1 level tsp grated chocolate, to serve (optional)

Rambles with Rafa Rafa had a new little buddy on this month’s walk, with our latest foster dog Flake joining us and he picked a beauty! This month David of JH legal takes us out to Curbar Edge, which is right in the middle of our Rural voice delivery area. It was nice to take some time and see the authentic beauty of this area doing what we love most – walking our dogs! The walk starts in the National Trust car park (which hosts a terrific coffee and cake van), however, if you are not a member and don’t want to pay there is plenty of free parking nearby, just get there early! From the car park the walk takes you out along Baslow Edge, past the Eagle Rock before descending into Baslow village. You then walk along the river Derwent before edging Calver and then up through Curbar and climbing back up to Curbar Edge.

5-mile circular walk from Curbar Edge Car park

A mid-distance walk which should take you and your dog around 2 hours to complete. The walk is mostly on trails and paths but there are a few short stretches of road so please take care. There may be some uneven and muddy terrain, so please wear appropriate footwear and as always, please follow the countryside code.

Start: Curbar Gap Car Park, Clodhall La. Hope Valley S32 3YR 1. Standing in the car park facing the road, follow a footpath out of the far right-hand corner of the car park, signposted for ‘Baslow Edge’. Cross straight over the road and continue along a farm track going uphill running parallel with the road. Pass by a large metal gate on your left and continue with a stone wall on your left. After a very short distance pass through a wooden gate. 2. Continue along a footpath with open views on your right and a stone wall on your left. After a short distance the path splits in two. Keep to the left staying close to the stone wall on your left. When the wall ends continue straight ahead for some distance and pass by a large rock (Eagle Rock) on your left. 3. Continue straight ahead for some distance until reaching a small marker post with blue arrows on your left. You will have open views directly in front of you and at this point follow the path to the right, going downhill. After some distance pass through a wooden gate and then continue along a lane going downhill with a stone wall on both sides. 4. Continue along the lane for quite some distance to pass by ‘Ladywell Farm’ on your right. Immediately after the farm follow the lane sharp around to the right and then after a short distance follow the lane around to the left. Continue downhill along the lane until it turns into a road and you begin to pass houses on both sides. 5. Continue until reaching a road junction and pass a red letter-box on your right. Continue ahead along the road passing the ‘Village Store’ on your right, then passing a school on your left, eventually reaching a mini island on a main road. Turn right along the main road and pass a church on your left. Immediately after the church turn left and cross over a river bridge. 6. After crossing the bridge, turn right along a road keeping the river on your right. Continue along the road for some distance, passing all of the houses on your left and then continue into a no limits speed restriction zone. The road narrows and then begins to bend to the left. As the road bends to the left turn right to pass through a gate into a field along a signposted footpath. 7. Pass by a marker post in the middle of the field and through a gap in a stone wall. Continue ahead to pass close by a telegraph pole and then continue with a stone wall on your right. A little further on pass through a wooden gate and continue with the stone wall on your right. 8. Continue ahead until passing through a gap and then continue with the stone wall on your right. When the stone wall ends continue with a river on your right. After some distance pass through a gap and then immediately through a wooden gate to continue with the river on your right.

9. Further on pass through another gap into a field and continue with the river on your right. At the far side of the field pass through a wooden gate, cross a river bridge and then continue along a footpath with the river on your right and houses on your left. Continue straight ahead, pass underneath a road bridge and then continue until reaching a road. 10. Cross the road and take the path to turn right and cross over a river bridge. After a short distance ignore the sharp turning left for ‘Dukes Drive’ and take the road on the left, going uphill called ‘Curbar Lane’. Continue for some distance going steep uphill and cross a crossroads with a red telephone box on your right to continue straight ahead going uphill. 11. Continue for some distance until you have passed by all the houses. Eventually the road begins to bend to the left at this point continue straight ahead through a gap in a wall into a field along a signposted footpath. Continue steep uphill with a stone wall on your right. At the far side of the field, pass through a gap and then through a wooden gate to continue uphill. 12. After a short distance pass through a gap in a wall and then continue uphill until reaching some steps directly in front of you. Climb up the steps, pass through a gap and continue straight ahead. After some distance you will pass through a gap in a wall and onto a road. Turn immediately right just prior to reaching the road and continue going uphill on a footpath running parallel to the road. Continue to the top of the hill and the car park on your left.

This walk is for illustrative purposes only. Voice Magazines takes no responsibility for anyone who chooses to follow this route and encourages all walkers to obey all byelaws and signs and to respect the area they are walking in, ensuring they pick up all dog mess and obey the countryside code at all times.

Pepe

3 years 1 month - Male - Lurcher Hi, I’m Pepe! I am looking for a home that I can call my own, seeing as I came in as a stray I would LOVE to have a home with a comfy sofa and loads of toys for me to play with! My favourite things are zooming around and giving everyone in sight a cuddle! I am a sweet boy with a gentle soul, I just need someone to take a chance on me so that I can flourish and be happy. I can live with other dogs (I would love a partner in crime) as long as they can handle my lurcher madness. I haven’t been around little people before so I would like to live with children over the age of 12 or an adult only home. If you feel you could offer me a comfy sofa and loads of love and patience then please contact the Nottinghamshire centre. Love, Pepe x

Vincent

Hi Everyone, my name is Vincent and I am an ex-racer who is looking for my loving forever home. I really enjoy being here at Jerry Green because I get to have my zoomies in their secure field, gets lots of lovely food & treats and then get to rest in my super comfy bed... my favourite lying position is upside down, this is when I am really chilled. I’ve been told that I walk perfectly on lead, even though I am a big boy. So now I need to find my forever retirement home, if you would like to spend your days going on lovely walks and then relaxing at home with me, please give the Nottinghamshire centre a call 01623 792 886 to arrange an appointment to come and meet me.

Gardener’s Calendar ~ June 2018

VVM1471 (Walvins Timber Q Advert).indd 1

22/05/2018 15:11

Everything you have been nurturing in the greenhouse or on windowsills is safe to go out into the garden now. It’s very unusual to get a frost this time in the year, and all the summer bedding and veggies should romp away. This includes the likes of courgettes, cucumbers and French beans. Pinch out side-shoots on tomatoes to make stronger plants and more fruit. Shrubs which have already flowered – such as forsythia, mock orange and flowering currant should be pruned back now so they have plenty of time to grow for next season – they flower on the previous year’s growth. Cut back lower down to strong young shoots and every year take about a quarter of old stems right back. There is often a gap in flowering in the June garden. Spring flowers have gone over and summer plants are still to get into their stride. If you’re looking for something to fill, you could help wildlife by scouring the garden centre for plants which bees love such as borage, foxgloves and hardy geraniums. Most herbs are great for insects and have the advantage of being useful for us too.

Top Tip!

Roses love bananas. Skins that is. They are rich in potassium and just the thing for a rose snack. Lay on the ground round the root and cover in about 3cm of soil.

Mike’s Musings I love it when Mike gives us a series… and this one is proving to be a classic! George’s suggestion for regulating carvery servings had me thinking back to my childhood and asking for seconds of my school dinner – It took some special courage to brave the dinner ladies who would scrutinise your plate with a hawk like glare to make sure it was clean! I wonder if they would be part of George’s plan?

Saving the Planet? Part 2

It seems as if George, who as the spokesperson on all matters environmental for UCIP, struck a chord with many of you last month. I say this because I’ve had requests from a number of sources asking for more of George’s radical thoughts on how we can collectively work together to ensure that our children/ grandchildren have a planet worth living on.

in the extra charge. After all some people are just big eaters. No, the charge would apply to all those whose ‘eyes are bigger than their bellies’ and who end up leaving a half eaten congealed pile of messy food on their plate. NB – a similar practice would be introduced at all establishments operating an ‘eat as much as you like’ type option.

Well, given that food production is a major contributor to both land use and our carbon footprint, George has got real concerns about the amount of food that is needlessly wasted and has some proposals to help reduce what he calls an absolute scandal. NB – when George uses the word ‘absolute’ you can be sure he’s serious.

3 – strictly regulate the quantity of food allowed to be added to dinner plates where a hot carvery is the main option. Customers would be permitted to take only reasonable portions of vegetables. If they then have a ‘clean’ plate, but only then, will they be permitted to go back for more.

Whilst he continues to work on environmental policies to be debated at the first ever UCIP National Conference to be held in Swanwick in October, he has asked me to ‘float’ the following suggestions to assess whether or not they are likely to be supported by the electorate.

By way of explanation, George did tell me that at a Mother’s Day lunch at the Hilcote Country Club he saw a customer pile food so high that he needed to cup his hands round his three (yes 3!) Yorkshire Puddings, to stop them falling off the plate. Now, nothing wrong with a bit of gluttony but, as in this case, there is when the food is not then all eaten up.

1 – abolish the ‘best by’ and ‘use by’ advisory dates on food packaging and replace them with a simple message along the lines of ‘consumption of this product after (insert date) will at best, result in a sore tummy and at worst, prolonged and highly embarrassing visits to the lavatory’. 2 – introduce an additional levy – that just sounds a bit better than ‘tax’ – for all those who, after an overnight stay in a hotel or B&B, regard the buffet breakfast as an opportunity to make a pig of themselves. That in itself would not result

More environmental issues next month – bet you can’t wait!!

Cooper’s Corner Follow Barry on Twitter @bazdjcooper Football writer at Trinity Mirror

Before the domestic season has ended our thoughts have already turned to the biggest international tournament with the announcement of the World Cup squad. You certainly can’t accuse Gareth Southgate of hiding behind safe choices but are there reasons for optimism? Here’s what our Barry thinks…

There’s been plenty of speculation surrounding Gareth Southgate’s squad for the World Cup in Russia. One of the main schools of thought has been that it’s too inexperienced and it’s one lacking in big tournament experience. Interesting, but in truth, England have gone to major tournaments previously with the likes of Paul Scholes, David Beckham, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard. Plenty of experience having played for the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea – both in the Premier League and in Europe. It didn’t seem to get the nation too far, certainly not further than a quarter-final in recent years. In fact, the best the Three Lions have achieved in the last 20-odd years came on home soil during Euro 96 when Southgate famously missed a penalty in the semi-final against Germany at Wembley. Yes, that one where Stuart Pearce didn’t… Southgate himself was just 24 when he missed that spot-kick and the average age of this squad is a nudge over 26. What Southgate’s squad has is energy, it has drive and it has players who you sense will thrive playing under his management, with the freedom and shackles firmly off. He’s a coach that will take the pressure off, he’s a cool, calm and collective character which you feel will suit this group well. Too often England have gone to a major

28

tournament with heaps of pressure on them, both from within and from outside, and given the way the former defender conducts himself, he’s unlikely to keep the players cooped up in their hotel for 23 hours a day. It feels like this is a group that enjoy and relish pulling on the Three Lions. England probably won’t win the World Cup this summer, they might not even make the latter stages, but what we have is a group of young, hungry players that are only going to get better. Southgate is also right to leave behind Joe Hart, who in truth, has had a difficult time since being allowed to leave Manchester City by Pep Guardiola. He may have played all but one qualifying game and can probably count himself a tad unlucky to not be on the plane, though the three picked have had better seasons than him. Jordan Pickford remains a raw talent, though not as raw as the spell he had on loan at Alfreton Town a few years ago – he has to be the future, even if he remains rough around the edges. Southgate for many is a pragmatic man, a pragmatic coach and one that will probably err on the side of caution first and foremost, but with the likes of Raheem Sterling, Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford and Jamie Vardy, they boast players that can cause problems. Maybe we should try and enjoy the World Cup and back our boys and you just never know…
