Don’t forget to mention Voice Magazines when responding to the Ads
Editor’s Message Merry Christmas one and all and welcome to our special Christmas edition. Did I mention it’s nearly Christmas!? I make no apologies for being cheerful about Christmas. And if you’re feeling a bit grumpy about it just imagine winter without Christmas!
Don’t forget to mention the ‘Voice’ when you use any of the companies in this magazine
Staying on the theme (it’s Christmas by the way đ&#x;˜‰) we have a load of fabulous Christmas content and adverts, including events in our Things To Do section and throughout the magazine so make sure you have a good read through so you don’t miss anything. Congratulations to all our NEC Xmas Gift Fair winners. We had a great response again this year so sorry to all those of you who didn’t get tickets. But if you did miss out don’t despair, we have a new competition for you this month. We have a set of family tickets to give away for Peter Pan at the Nottingham Theatre Royal, starring Joe Pasquale and John Challis. Turn to page XX to find out more! To help us celebrate the season we have another foster arriving before this magazine lands on your doorstep. It’s a really special thing being able to help a dog, especially this time of the year. I may have mentioned before but we help Spaniel Aid, who do so much good work, fostering and finding homes for deserving doggies but there are lots of other good charities to support, so if you want to help, don’t delay, give a rescue dog a home for Christmas. The next time we will be dropping on your doorstep will be 2019. Now that is a scary thought. We have big plans for next year, with a new website and more mags in the pipeline, along with new exciting content, more great competitions and of course, as always, the very best local information and businesses. Sooooooo keep your eyes peeled! Have a Merry one!

Man dy ’s Travel Page Hi I’m Mandy your Personal Travel Counsellor. I have said this before and I’m sure many of you have too, but I cannot believe how fast this year has gone. For me personally, it has been a great year, I have travelled abroad and within the UK throughout the year visiting lots of new places. With my articles in the past year I have tried to bring to life the exotic and the unusual holiday destinations as well as some of the old favourites. The world is a big place, so if I haven’t written about somewhere on your bucket list please get in touch. If I haven’t been there yet, I’m sure I will know someone who has. Watch for more interesting destinations for 2019. So with Christmas just around the corner and if, like me, you may be struggling with ideas of what to buy your nearest and dearest, well what about a Travel Counsellors gift voucher? The vouchers can vary in value and you don’t have to pay for a full holiday with them. They can be used as a part payment for short breaks or experiences as well. They also come fully gift wrapped, so you don’t even have to worry about wrapping!
and because it’s Christmas... would you like to wIn a Molton Brown travel gift set?
To be in with a chance all you need to do is send your email address to mandy.oldknow@travelcounsellors.com using the title VOICE CHRISTMaS A winner will be picked at random on the 19 th December and your gift will arrive in time for Christmas. I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and thank you all for reading my page. I am available 7 days a week to take your enquiries and 24/7 whilst you are away in the event of emergency. Be Mouthaware for November This month I was invited to Glendair in aid of Mouth Cancer action Month, to have a free oral health check with senior dentist Matt. I did point out that this could be an awkward write up but thankfully I was given a good bill of health!
So, I was welcomed into the room and sat in the dentist chair as normal. I was asked a few
questions and then Matt proceeded with the check, full mouth, gums, lips and under the
tongue. The beauty of this check at Glendair is that it isn’t just once a year, this full check (approx. an extra 5 mins on your appointment) is carried out as routine with your usual dentistry check- ups.
As is always the case with Glendair, they really take the time to care about the bigger
picture and one of the things that was shocking to me, was that Mouth Cancer is very serious. Not least because it is yet another silent killer that is difficult to detect but also because the survival rates are not very happy reading if it does not get detected early.
Some of the signs are things that you may see commonly, such as mouth ulcers and the risks are higher with people who smoke and drink. However, if you are concerned about
anything at all, just pop into Glendair...you don’t need to be and existing customer, Matt and
the team made it very clear to me, that anyone with any concerns are more than welcome to pop in for a free oral health check...Don’t be square, be Mouthaware!!!

Book Review
09/09/2018 15:24
Family expectations, in this case the need for children to fulfil the dreams of their parents, are always a thorny area. The adult may want the child to be accepted and popular in a way they never were. Or to achieve something they failed to do themselves. And for the child it may be a balancing act between trying to keep their parents happy and their family together whilst negotiating the difficult shores of growing up and becoming their own person. Never easy, sometimes tragic. This is the tale of Lydia Lee and her family as told by Celeste Ng in Everything I Never Told You. Although Ms Ng does add the complication of a boy Lydia pursues at school and who may, or may not, have something to do with her being found floating in the local lake. This is a first novel, but it has struck a chord with many readers. It’s very good on the pressures on children to become what their parents want of them. And on what happens when you’re not the chosen child that everything rests upon. The author gives a good account of what many will recognise as family life and the stories which families tell themselves which may be a million miles from the truth. Worth a read.

Rambles with Rafa This month’s walk was a resounding hit with both two-legged and fourlegged ramblers. It mixes some fascinating local history, an attractive town, beautiful countryside, and stunning views. What more could you ask for? A big thank you goes out to David from JH legal! The walk begins at the Historic North Mill and takes you through the town by some of the historical landmarks of the town. Take some time to read the information boards if you want to learn about Belpers rich industrial history. From here we head out across country to Makeney, where the Holly Bush Inn makes the perfect dog friendly stop. Next we cross the Derwent in Milford before heading back across country to Belper and more fantastic views.
7 mile circular walk from Belper via Makeney
A mid-length walk which should take you and your dog around 3 hours to complete. The walk features a number of roads so please take care. There majority of the walk is on trails but please wear appropriate footwear and as always, please follow the countryside code.

Walk back through the car park entrance and continue with a tall stone wall on your left and Belper Mill on your right. Upon reaching the main road turn right and continue along the main road and cross at a set of traffic lights and continue right into the town centre. After a short distance take the first road on your left to turn into ‘Long Row’. Continue along a cobbled road, cross a rail bridge with a signboard on your right. Continue as the road bends to the right and then continue ahead along ‘Green Lane’. After some distance pass a church on your left and continue until reaching a T junction of roads. Cross straight over the road and into the ‘War Memorial Gardens’. Follow a tarmac footpath through the gardens and then pass through an archway and onto a main road. Turn left along the main road for a short distance and then take a right onto ‘Queen Street’ to double back on yourself. Next take the first left onto ‘New Breck Road’ and cross the road to immediately take a footpath with a stone wall on both sides next to a red brick building. Continue, to pass through a gap and then steeply uphill for a short distance with a wall on your left. When the wall ends bear left to continue up two steps and along a footpath going uphill until reaching a T junction of paths. At the T junction turn right and then immediately left to pass a football field on your right. Continue along the path uphill and pass a marker post on your left. A little further on climb some more steps and pass a marker post on your right and a chain link fence on your right. When the chain link fence ends at the top of the hill pass a footpath to your left and continue along a grassy path. Pass a bench and continue with a wall on your right. When the wall ends pass a metal width restrictor on your left and then continue along the footpath with a fence and wall and some housing on your left. Pass close by a house on your right to reach a road. Turn right along the road for some distance and then immediately after passing ‘Belper View Care Home’ on your left, turn left along ‘Wildersley Road’ and a signposted footpath. The road immediately turns into a lane going downhill. Follow the lane to pass a farm on your left and continue straight ahead along the lane with a wall on both sides. After some distance the lane bears to the right. Ignoring footpaths on both sides of the lane continue along the lane with a tall hedge on both sides. Follow the lane to pass close by some farm buildings on your left. Pass through a gap adjacent to a large metal gate and continue, firstly with a wall on your left then straight ahead to cross an open field. Keep to the path to pass through a large gap in the hedge and as it curls around to the left then the right. Continue along a footpath with a hedge on both sides until reaching a road. Turn right along the road for some distance and then take a lane and signposted ‘Bridleway’ on your left. After some distance you will come to two private driveways ahead of you. At this point bear slightly right to continue along a bridleway going downhill with a stone wall on your left. Continue ahead for some distance, crossing over a crossroads of footpaths and downhill until the path turns into a road. Pass by houses on both sides and reach a T junction of roads with the Holly Bush Inn directly ahead of you. Turn right at the T junction and continue downhill along a road. At another T junction turn right along a road, passing ‘Makeney Hall Hotel’ on your left. Upon reaching T junction with a main road turn left to cross over a river bridge. Pass a mill on your right, then turn right and up some steps into ‘Chevin Alley’ to climb some steps to a road.
14. Cross over the road and continue steeply uphill along a road called ‘Sunny Hill’. Continue, going uphill for some distance and then eventually the road turns into a lane. Continue along the lane and signposted ‘Byway’ with a wall and golf course on both sides. 15. After some distance the lane narrows and continues gently uphill. After you have left the golf course behind the path levels out and has views to your right. Continue for a long distance until reaching a signboard on your left reading ‘Midshires Way’. Turn right to pass through a gap in a wall and along a marked footpath going downhill with a wall on your left and a fence on your right. At the bottom of the hill pass through a gap in a wall and onto a road. 16. Turn left along the road for a short distance then turn right along a lane and marked footpath to pass two houses on your left. Pass through a small wooden gate into a field and bear to the left and follow a footpath downhill. Pass through a small clump of trees and then pass through a gap. Follow the path downhill through two more gaps and then pass through a small wooden gate to a T junction of paths. Turn left along the path and continue straight ahead with a fence on your left. 17. Staying close to the fence pass through a gap to reach a T junction with a lane. Turn left and then immediately right along a footpath. After a short distance pass through a gap adjacent to a large metal gate and continue, with a fence on your left. After some distance pass through a gap and then along a lane with a stone wall on your right. 18. After some distance pass through a small metal gate adjacent to a large metal gate and then along a lane. Continue as the lane narrows to a footpath with a wall on both sides and the river on your right until reaching a road. Cross the road and then turn right to cross over the river. 19. Pass through a gap in a wall on your left into a car park. Cross the car park diagonal left and follow a blue sign marked for ‘River Gardens’ to take you along a footpath between the mill building and the weir. Upon reaching the corner of the building turn right and then immediately left to cross over a bridge and back into the car park.

Penny
1 year 4 months - Female - Jack Russell Terrier Hi friends, Penny here :) Aren’t I adorable?! I am looking for an active, terrier experienced home to take me on. My favourite activities are playing with toys, going for long walks/runs, and digging! I require a home that can give me lots of mental and physical stimulation to prevent me from becoming bored, and I also need a home with company as I don’t like being left alone too much :( I am not a huge fan of car travel and need a little work on my doggy greetings, but promise to fill your world with fun and smiles :) To enquire about coming to meet me, please contact the Notts team on 01623792886 x
Ava
2 years 0 month - Female - Crossbreed Hello everyone! Ava here, and I am a little cutie :) I love being with my favourite person, so would adore a new home with someone in the majority of the day. I like a good zoomie around the field here at Jerry Greens, and have a busy mind - enjoying my toys and training. I do need a quiet home without other pets or kids, but can have dog walking friends out and about :) A gentle approach is best with me, as I am sensitive! A patient handler, who can help build my confidence would be perfect, and I will need a little work with my housetraining. If you have a kind heart, as well as patience and love, why not call the Notts team on 01623792886 to enquire :) Love and cuddles, Ava x Jerry Green Christmas Shoebox Appeal – Help us show them love this Christmas Dear Santa, please can we have: A Happy Loving Home • A New Ball • Hot Dogs • Tasty Treats • Kong Toys • Harness and Collars • Tug Toys Loads of Love from Jerry Green Dogs Drop off at your local centre Search for our Amazon Wishlist:Jerry Green Dog Rescue Christmas Shoebox Appeal

Mike’s Musings It has been said that no good deed does unpunished. Well I can’t speak for everyone but my thoughts are, if the reward is a warm glow, a chuckle and good story to tell then just maybe it was worth it. At this time of year, you’d need to be a particularly hard-hearted Hannah not to be moved by this poignant tale of a charitable act in which a group of individuals go out of their way to help someone less fortunate than themselves. Be warned, you may need a handkerchief nearby! About 30 years ago – before Amazon, Yodel and the rest came to prominence - in the busy preChristmas period at Somercotes Sorting Office, one member of the hard working staff came across an unstamped envelope. In pencil, was the simple hand written request Please Deliver to God. Suitably intrigued, Alice who had discovered this note was given permission to open the envelope. Inside was one sheet of paper containing the following tear jerking message:Dear God With Christmas coming I do hope you can help me. Albert, my husband died recently, and after paying for his funeral, I’ve very little money. We had no children of our own but I do have some very good neighbours who have helped me through this difficult period. As a result I’d like to repay their kindness and invite them round to my house for a wee party. However, I’ve barely enough to feed myself and was wondering if you might be able to send me £100 to get some nice food and drink in for them. That should be enough to make it worthwhile. I expect you’re busy at this time of year yourself, but I’m hoping you can meet my request. Yours sincerely Margaret No.## Charnwood Crescent Well Alice had recently lost her Dad and was aware of the comfort her own Mum would need during the coming festive season, and this prompted her to do what she could to help. She asked her workmates if they’d be prepared to chip in and make a contribution. They all agreed and between them, with a generous donation from the Sorting Office management team, they raised a total of £96. NB – this was a lot of money in the 1980’s. A couple of days before Christmas, having identified the correct Charnwood Crescent in the DE55 post code zone, Alice quietly slipped an envelope containing this amount of cash through Margaret’s letter box. Not wishing to seek any praise or thanks on behalf of the Sorting Office for their good deed, as a deliberate act, there was nothing to indicate where the precious windfall had come from. A few days into the New Year, Alice just happened to be on duty when another unstamped enveloped arrived at her sorting station. Just as before, this was addressed Please Deliver to God. Recognising the handwriting, and without seeking her supervisor’s permission, Alice opened the envelope. Inside was the following brief thank you note. Dear God Thank you very much for sending that money. I laid on a lovely party for my neighbours. You ought to know however that the envelope was £4 short. I’m reckoning it was those b******s at the Post Office! Margaret

Time for a clear-up in the garden. Rake fallen leaves onto your lawn then mow with a rotary mower. This cuts the leaves up fine so they’ll compost more easily and you can rake up the resulting mix. Edging the lawn before winter makes it look more cared for.
Things you can plant now include bare root roses and currant bushes which are in their dormant period. If you’re looking for some winter colour try cyclamen (not the big showy inside ones they won’t survive the cold), pansies, trailing ivy and primulas. The bare stems of cornus come in different colours and are lovely in a winter garden. If you’re planning a waste bonfire – assuming it’s legal in your area, so check with your local authority – make sure there’s no hedgehogs hibernating inside. Also be careful when turning compost heaps which often provide winter warmth for frogs and toads. And if you’ve got plants with hollow stems don’t cut them down as they provide overwintering for insects.
Top Tip!
If the garden is getting bit bare, don’t forget birds can bring loads of life into it. Insect cake hung up will attract tits, berry cake for finches, peanuts cake for starlings. Small birds love grated cheese or bits of bacon rind, blackbirds fruit and raisins.

Cooper’s Corner Follow Barry on Twitter @bazdjcooper Football writer at Trinity Mirror
Barry had me breaking out into Bob Dylan at the start of this article. But who will be saying I Threw It All Away after the upcoming derby match and who will be the Masters of War. The answer my friend is Blowing in the Wind.
Are times changing at our two biggest clubs in the East Midlands?
Nottingham Forest are a club reinvigorated under the tutelage of Aitor Karanka and their new ownership, with record season ticket sales and a bumper average attendance backing a push for the top six after years of decline.
At their arch-rivals Derby County, Frank Lampard has seemingly won over the doubters (including my very sceptical other half) and turned his youngsters into a team which looks capable of mounting a genuine play-off campaign.
An impressive Carabao Cup win at Manchester United was the high point in the campaign to date, while a spirited display against Chelsea’s reserves before two own goals saw their challenge fall at Stamford Bridge raised expectations yet further. Forest are averaging more than 27,500 at the City Ground this season thus far, and should that theme continue, then they’ll record their biggest average crowd on Trentside since the days when Brian Clough and Peter Taylor’s men conquered all comers domestically and in Europe. For a club which have been deprived of top-flight action for almost two decades, missing out not only on the riches that 36
comes with Premier League football, but also a legion of new supporters, that deserves respect in anybody’s language. Both Derby and Forest are challenging at the right end of the Championship and that’s great for these two fine clubs, who both need to push each other on to better things. English football needs a great rivalry between the Reds and Rams, and the Premier League would be a much better, passionate place with the pair playing in it.
Whether that happens this season remains to be seen, and while it may turn out to be a little way off just yet, you can’t but help but feel enthused by the progress they are making and the exciting brand of football on show for the supporters who have witnessed plenty of dross in recent times. Nothing will be decided when the pair meet at Pride Park on December 17th – it will however, give a glimpse of Forest’s development following the arrival of 18 new players since the end of last season, and where Derby are at under Lampard.
East Midlands’ derbies are never ones to be missed – and in this case, you wouldn’t want to avoid the season’s first instalment at the black and white end of the A52.
