Welcome to Amber Valley Voice Welcome to the July edition of the Amber Valley Voice and firstly I should start with a sincere apology to some of the Swanwick residents, who did not receive their copy of Junes AVV until very late. This issue has now been rectified and should not occur again but I would like to thank all the people that contacted me to inform me that it had not been received. It is a true testament to the fact that the community enjoys reading the magazine and whilst ever that is the case, I will continue to publish!!

Book Review The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
“The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it... It is simply there, when yesterday it was not.” The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern pulls you into a stunningly lush and absorbing world, one which dazzles because it is so otherworldly and beautiful, but which also has a heart of darkness. Morgenstern’s Cirque des Reves opens at nightfall. The gates close at dawn. It has acrobats and jugglers and fortune tellers but it also has tents full of clouds, vertical mazes which change as you, the reader, move through them, and illusions which are beyond human explaining. Beyond the seductive brilliance of its imagination, the book tells the story of a strange timeless game being played out by two master illusionists. The book’s two protagonists are their apprentices, the stakes are high, the rules are never understood. This is a very striking and unusual book and one which you will either love with a vengeance and want to read again very quickly, or hate because it takes you too deep into the world of imagination. Morgenstern’s world of illusion is more persuasive than many “realistic” novels. It’s a compelling world, but one you have to want to enter and there will be people who won’t get it. It offers an alternative reality - magical realism at its most fun. If it sounds like your kind of thing, it’s probably a book you will never want to Binish. It will wrap you in its spell and leave you with the faint scent of smoky caramel.

16 This month we have bringing you a nice long walk to help you stretch your legs and make the most of the summer sun (if it ever arrives!) There will be plenty of opportunities to let your dogs off the lead but as always make sure to ensure their safety & abide by the codes at all times. As always, if you have a favourite walk of your own why not share it with us by email at info@ambervalleyvoice.co.uk or by calling Emily on 01773 604178 or 07891 639638. Thanks to Rachel, Milo & Megan this month who helped no end!! 7 Mile Circular Walk from Codnor Park Reservoir to Codnor Castle Another great walk for you and your dog it offers a range of scenery and plenty of off-lead walking. The route is fairly long taking about 3 1/2 hours. It is fairly undulating with some uphill sections and the terrain is mixed with some sections which may be best tackled with a sturdy pair of boots.
Park in the free car park that are available in Codnor Park reservoir, located off Coach Road
Take the path at the western end of the car park that leads you along the side of the reservoir. At the end of the reservoir the path meets another. Bear left and continue along the path that runs alongside the canal.
At the end of the path you pass through a gate and up a small hill to meet Newlands Road. Turn left and walk past the left side junction for Coach Road then cross the road when safe and take the turn on the right for Coach Road.
Carryon along Coach Road. Approximately 1 mile up the road there is a left hand turn, marked by 2 cottages on the corner of the turn. This road takes you up beside the police headquarters.
Just past the entrance to the police headquarters site keep to the right hand side of the road. Take a wide path that heads towards the supermarket. Cross the main road and take the path to the left that takes you alongside the roundabout. Where this path meets the road cross carefully and head down towards a gate which brings you onto a large park area.
Bear to the left around the park. When you reach a skate park keep to the left and take a footpath out of the park into a field.
Head left along the field. When you reach the metal fence turn left and keep to the path that goes around the outside of the industrial estate.
SPECIAL OFFER!!! 50 FREE Messy Mutz poop scoop bags
with every purchase of Millers Complete Dog Food with this coupon
At the far end of the industrial estate the path splits. Take a right and carry on until you meet the road. Cross the road and head left towards the junction with Alfreton Road. Turn right heading up the hill. When safe cross to the left hand side of the road.

After the large road sign take a jitty with a footpath sign. Follow this path over a number of fields, with the hedge on your left.
After about 3/4 of a mile this will bring you to Castle Lane. Head right along the road until it veers right. Head straight on taking a track down the hill. To your right is Condor Castle. Look for a gap in the hedge where you can walk up to the castle if you wish.
Carry on along the track as it bears around to the left. When you reach some woods on your right enter through a gate and look for a path going right. Take this path until you reach a bridge over the railway. Cross the bridge and turn left onto the footpath in the woods.
When the path crosses another path turn left and follow this path along to a stile. Cros the stile and a bridge onto the towpath of the Cromford Canal.
Carry on along the towpath for approximately 1 mile as it takes you through Ironville and to Codnor Park Reservoir.
At the reservoir keep to the left crossing a small metal bridge back into the car park.
This walk is for illustrative purposes only. The Amber Valley Voice takes no responsibility for anyone who chooses to follow this route and encourages all walkers to obey all byelaws and signs and to respect the area they are walking in, ensuring they pick up all dog mess and obey the countryside code at all times.

Swanwick & Somercotes Safer Neighbourhood update
23
Your local Safer Neighbourhood policing team includes Sgt. Simon Street, PC Chris Anthony and Police Community Support OfBicers Chris Bannister and Mark Rogers. They cover the Swanwick, Somercotes, Leabrooks and Pye Bridge area. Safer Neighbourhood policing teams work among every community in Derbyshire to helping to resolve local concerns and issues by working alongside partnership agencies and organisation. Some of the agencies the team works alongside include the local, district and county councils and Derbyshire County Council, housing associations, Neighbourhood Watch, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service and local schools among many others. They aim to be able to Bind long term solutions to issues such as anti-social behaviour, vandalism or damage and help to make your area safer, cleaner and a more pleasant place to live. Your ofBicers will arrange a meeting every three months to bring together partner agencies and local residents who can discuss and agree priorities for the area. The next meeting will take place at 5pm on Thursday, September 13 at Somerlea Park Centre, Sherwood Street, Somercotes. Recent priorities the team have targeted have included litter on Derby Road, Swanwick at the bus stops during school collection and drop off times and road safety issues, particularly around young people riding scooters. There are also regular surgeries where you can call in and speak about any concerns and the next one has been set for between 3pm and 4pm on Thursday, August 2 at Greenhill Primary Care Centre. You can Bind out details on the areas current priorities, meeting details and check out news from the team by visiting www.derbyshire.police.uk. 25 As the most common cancer in white people, the advice to stay out of the summer sun between 11am and 3pm is probably sensible, but not always practical so covering up with closeweave cloth e.g. a t-shirt is an option. If you choose to use sunscreen instead, there are a few facts you may not be aware of: ♦We know about SPF ratings which indicate the amount of UVB light screened, but screening UVA light is also important and that is measured in the UK with the star system. It is recommended that you “use a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher, with at least 4 stars to provide good balanced protection across the UV spectrum” ♦Apply ‘liberally’ - this means 2 coats so bits are less likely to be missed and using at least “2 teaspoons for head, neck and shoulders and 2 tablespoons for whole body” but obviously your size dictates how much you need. ♦Reapply ‘often’ – every 2 hours. If it is a once daily sunscreen –remember it can still be rubbed, sweated or washed off so applying more often is advised. ♦Out of date? – sunscreens are usually out of date after 18 months –so aren’t likely to protect you after that. So what about the risk of Vitamin D de5iciency with too little sun? Vitamin D deBiciency is linked to rickets, osteomalacia (soft bones), and even some cancers. People most at risk are: · people with naturally brown or black skin · people who wear clothing that fully conceals them · older people who don’t go outside much · pregnant women · breast-feeding babies with vitamin D-deBicient Registered Osteopaths mothers and Physiotherapists who · people who avoid the sun can help in relieving your pain Our skin needs, on average, 15 minutes of sunlight in the middle of the day, 2-3 times a week to • Sports Injuries produce enough vitamin D which will then be • Pregnancy stored to keep up doing throughout the winter . • Aches & Pains Any more than that is excreted. DVD Review - The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (12A)
When a group of British retirees ind themselves struggling to fund their retirements they are enticed by the promise of spending their golden years in luxury at the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Of course, as with so many things in their lives up to this point, it doesn’t quite work out that way. The hotel they ind is very much in its twilight years and despite the best efforts of the passionate manager Sonny Kapoor (Dev Patel) it looks like their stay will be short lived. However, as they adapt to the new world they inhabit, which is so full of colour and life, their experiences help them come to terms with the end of their old lives and the beginning of a new adventure. This ilm is highly enjoyable, illed with moments that will make you laugh and cry. The plot is simple but well told and the all star cast are fantastic. Each holding their own in delivering performances of genuine class and humour.

Gardeners Calendar - July

Once your philadelphus (mock orange) has inished lowering, cut back lowering wood to encourage new lowering branches next year and stop it growing too large. Feed tomatoes once a week as soon as the irst truss has set. Remove side shoots to encourage fruit rather than foliage to develop on trained toms and if you’re growing them outside, pinch out the growing shoots at 5 trusses. If you’re also growing cucumbers you can feed with tomato feed or alternatively, liquid seaweed feed also works well. Make yourself more strawberry plants for next year. – Peg runners down into the soil; they’ll root in about a month and should be ready to separate in about mid to late August.
Top Tip If you’ve got whiteBly on your greenhouse plants and don’t want to use a chemical killer, a teaspoon of washing up liquid in a pint of water makes an effective spray. Use a couple of times per week.
