Editor’s Message I will apologise now as I know that there are a lot of football fans out there but… thank goodness it is over! Not only did we have to cope with the disappointment of our own team but also….it does go on forever! I don’t mind the football, really I don’t but overload!! Then to boot (no pun intended honest), I am sure that the new season is starting earlier than ever!? I know for a fact that our dad and his lad will disagree with me and to prove this point, this month they have done a cracking article on all the happenings, odds etc. Well, I say ‘they’ but really it is ‘the lad’ Archie, who has written it all this month!! Onto the weather, I’m not one to jinx things but hasn’t it been amazing? There was so much going on last month with all the various events and I am so pleased we had great weather for it and I hope for more of the same for this months events and also for it to carry on until October-ish!! Finally, I would also like to draw your attention to Janine’s article on the Air Ambulance. We at Voice Magazines are keen to try and do something different and this is a perfect example of getting out and about and seeing what is happening on our doorstep. It is clear from the article that this is a fantastic service, that I hope never to use but will continue to support where possible and seeing as my collection bag dropped through the letterbox only this week… I know what I will be doing this weekend! Please have a read and see what you can do to help support them. For those of you off on your jollies (because it is the jolldays season), wishing you a great time and we shall see you when you get back! Happy Reading,
Emily x

A new feature where we really get to know our businesses, what got them started, what they enjoy most about their business and what makes them different!!
Shouting about... This month we meet Seals Fodder Room... Tel: 01773 602 466 www.sealsfodder.co.uk Seals Fodder Room, The Mill, High Street, Swanwick, Derbyshire DE55 1AA This month Carla and I went to meet Seals Fodder Room in a bid to find out more about this thriving local, family run business that has something for every pet owner, animal lover and even those that simply love the outdoors…. Seals Fodder Room was originally created in the 1940’s when the Seals family bought a 3 storey steam driven bread mill (the current site still has much of the original features). They began manufacturing poultry corn for their own use before expanding from there.

When is your busiest time of year?
Opening Times Winter and specifically the run up to Christmas Monday to Friday - 8:30am - 5:15pm, Saturday - 8:30 - 12:15pm is our busiest time of the year. This is largely because the majority of our customer’s animals that we provide food to eat grass over the spring/summer/autumn period.
Kevin Walters joined the team in the late 1980’s as a sales rep, before he finally took over ownership in 1998 with co-owner Alan Cooper. Seals Fodder Room is now one of the largest independent wholesalers in supplying animal feeds to farm shops and other retail outlets in the UK, a family run business with 15 members of staff in total and 7 delivery vehicles…and all on our doorstep.
Tell us something that people on your doorstep wouldn’t know about you?
We offer Nutritional & Bedding advice on most animals from guinea pigs to horses/ cows. We have a team of knowledgeable and approachable staff that are happy to help and if there is something in particular that you need we will always try and get it for you if we can. We also load customer cars with their heavier purchases and we can deliver multiple quantities of the large 15kg food bags (in excess of 10 bags) for free but anything smaller than this amount or bag size would incur a haulage charge of £9. Also….we did supply to a visiting circus once too!!!
Who is your main customer base?
Obviously the farm shops and other retail outlets from the East Coast to North Wales that we supply to and supplying animal feeds to farms. However, we are constantly increasing our supply to the leisure market for horses and all pet owners generally. I think also our outdoor clothing and footwear section has grown in popularity as it supplies essentials for everybody that enjoy time in the great outdoors including rain coats, wellies, jumpers, mac-in-a-sac, walking socks, wellie sock inserts and much more.
We had great fun interviewing the team onsite, they are all animal owners and their passion regarding all animals and their welfare shines through but don’t take our words for it…..pop in and see for yourselves!!!

Gardener’s Calendar - August 2014 Black spot on roses is very common at this time of year, but spraying will not work this late. Pick off affected leaves and clear and burn or bin those which are affected. Don’t put them in the compost heap.
After lavender has lowered you can trim it back but don’t cut too far into old wood. And of course if you dry the lavender it can be used to scent drawers or in pot pourri.
Top tip.
Try to avoid tap water when watering rhododendrons and azaleas especially in hard water areas. It contains too much calcium.

If you’re looking for a plant beyond chrysanths and dahlias to take you through into autumn, Heleniums are crackers. They’re perennials, they like moisture retentive soil but don’t want to be waterlogged and love sunny positions. They come in a variety of velvety colours and taller varieties may need staking but they’re really striking.

Carla’s Kitchen Shortbread The children were in charge of this months recipe and wanted to make shortbread. As this is the easiest thing in the world to make, I left them to it and put my feet up for half an hour!
Ingredients
♦
♦ 100g Butter ♦ 150g Plain Flour ♦ 50g Caster Sugar
Heat the oven to 190C/375F/Gas 5. Beat the butter and the sugar together until smooth. Stir in the lour to get a dough like texture. Turn on to a work surface and gently roll out until the dough is 1cm/½in thick. Cut into chosen shapes and place onto a baking tray. Sprinkle with caster sugar and chill in the fridge for 20 minutes. Bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes, or until pale golden-brown. Set aside to cool on a wire rack. Option to let the children decorate them if you fancy another half an hours peace.
If you have a recipe that you’d like to share then please send it to me at Carla@voicemagazines.co.uk

Mortgages • Re-mortgages • Buy to let mortgages • Life cover Buildings & contents insurance • Over 25 years experience Please contact us for professional, friendly advice. Gold Independent Financial Services Ltd based in Ripley offers advice on mortgages and insurance so whether you’re a first time buyer, remortgaging, moving or wanting to purchase a property to let we can help. Wayne Bates the Managing Director has worked in financial services for 26 years; following a successful career with a leading insurance firm he decided to set up his own advisory firm; Gold started trading in 1998 and since then it has helped thousands of clients realise their dreams of owning their own home. Wayne truly believes the customer comes first and his focus is on providing clients with a first class service, he wants you to be pleased that you used Gold for your mortgage needs and when you need advice in the future you automatically think of Gold. The business has grown on the back of strong customer service and the majority of new clients are referrals from existing clients who we continue to look after. Our regulator, The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) believes that in the past, some people were allowed to take out a mortgage they could not afford. This led to some of them falling behind with their payments or losing their home. The FCA has looked at how the process of getting a mortgage can be improved to prevent these problems. As a result they introduced new rules on 26 April 2014, to make sure that when you take out a mortgage: •you can afford it •it suits your needs and circumstances Our job is to research the mortgage market to find the deal that we believe is most appropriate for you taking your personal circumstances, needs and objectives into account. The mortgage lenders must satisfy themselves that you can afford your repayments now and in the future but we will consider this before any application is submitted. It is therefore important that when we meet, you are able to provide us with full details of your income and a breakdown of your monthly expenditure.
Another of the new rules introduced by the FCA is to stop mortgages being taken out without full advice (except under certain circumstances). Many lenders only offering their own products have been affected by this change but as a mortgage broker we have always provided this type of advice and pride ourselves on giving you the best service possible. The new rules cover mortgages where you use your own home as security for the loan, but do not cover buy-to-let mortgages or second mortgages. Wayne is fully trained and qualified to give advice on all types of mortgages from across the entire mortgage market so a call today could stop you from paying too much for your mortgage either now or in the future. We have all seen the effects that the dreadful weather, that has hit the UK earlier in the year, has had on homes, so once you have bought your property it is important that you take out adequate insurance, your lender will insist on buildings cover but you should not forget to insure the contents of your home. We can source products from a panel of insurers to provide you with competitive cover, even if you already have a policy there is no harm in looking at your options. Wayne is often surprised by how many of his clients have failed to take out life cover or critical illness protection; everyone insures their car but too many people forget to insure what is most important to their families. We don’t want to scare anybody but research shows that one in three people will be affected by some sort of cancer in their lifetime. There are over 200 types of cancer, that can attack different parts of the body and with advances in medical science survival rates are improving. A full review of your needs and circumstances can be carried out at any time; you don’t need to be speaking to us about a mortgage.
For a free no obligation meeting please phone us on 01773 744660. We will always make you feel welcome, the kettle is always on.
Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. We will only charge you a fee of up to 1% of the amount borrowed (for example if the mortgage is £75,000 the fee is £750), subject to a minimum of £500, payable on completion of your mortgage. We will agree the fee with you before any advice is provided. We do not charge fees for arranging life cover or buildings & contents insurance.

Derbyshire Police Update - Safer Neighbourhood Update The South Normanton and Pinxton Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team includes Sgt. Simon Street, PCSO Chris Hart and PCSO Marrion Jeffery. They cover the South Normanton and Pinxton area and work in partnership with other agencies to reduce crime, anti-social behaviour and resolve any community concerns or issues. Our current team priorities are to target: ♦ Speeding vehicles throughout the South Normanton & Pinxton area. We will be working with local residents to ind out which streets are most affected by the concerns, raising awareness of trafic speeds and setting up a Community Speed Watch Scheme. Our roads policing unit will be carrying out spot checks, monitoring trafic and carrying out checks. Enforcements will be taken where appropriate.
♦ Nuisance and off road motorbikes on public footpaths on Fordbridge Lane & Sporton Lane, South Normanton. Regular police patrols will be carried out to places where off road nuisance bikes are being used and residents are encouraged to report any incidents to the police on 101. We will be advising motorbike riders, issuing Section 59 warnings & seizing vehicles if necessary.
♦ Irresponsible & nuisance parking, including on pavements in the South Normanton & Pinxton area. There will be increased police patrols & we will speak to and advise motorists about the issues and concerns, as well as to encourage drivers to park safely and responsibly. We will also work alongside council civil parking oficers to enforce safe, legal and responsible parking and to make sure that they are aware of the responsibilities of both police and civil parking enforcement oficers. These priorities will be discussed, along with any new concerns, at their next meeting with residents and partnership agencies in September. Please look out for the date on the Derbyshire police website, and on posters in your local area. In the meantime, you can contact us with any concerns issues about crime by calling 101, or by emailing alfreton.neighbourhoods@derbyshire.pnn.police.uk. Well I tried not to upset anyone last month and it didn’t work, so where next? Well I think all the people who had a bit of a moan at me for being unpatriotic and dismissive of England’s chances at the world cup owe me an apology. It turns out I was far too optimistic, overpaid pussy cats who just rolled over and got tickled by Costa Ricans. Whilst on the subject of global sporting events I watched the tour de France in God’s county, it was a fantastic spectacle the speed and bravery of the riders is a sight to behold. One of our party missed the first stage, which was a shame, you’ll have to ask Bryan ‘lightweight’ Sole why he was absent, it must have been sickening to miss such an experience. After the success of the Yorkshire ‘tour’, you lot really need to get your act together and get Derbyshire on to the world stage.
seemingly unprepared for the real world. I asked a few people in their 20’s if they’d had a prom and it seems that the phenomena became popular in the early 2000’s and was influenced by American teen television programmes, Hannah Montana and all that garbage. Anyway my main problem with it is still to come, in 2 years my daughter will want me to spend no small amount on a dress and pink Rolls Royce, add in the nails, hair, eyebrows and spray tan and I think I’d better start saving now. I suppose if they enjoy it, then it’s worth it…..
Not sure how much of it will have come out by the time you read this, but the first signs of one of the biggest cover ups in history are out there.
