Editor’s Message I know that I’m not supposed to talk about the weather anymore but this summer has been so good, that I don’t want it to end! I am so sad that the clocks have to go back because it means the start of the short days and dark nights. I am aware however, that some friends of mine love this cosy time of year, where you can’t wait to get home from being out in the cold, put the fire on and close the curtains. I do echo this sentiment to some degree along with the good news that Christmas is coming!! On that note……I am sooooo excited to announce that we 10 pairs of tickets to ‘The Festive Gift Fair’ at the NEC in Birmingham. I’ve got all the literature and checked it out on t’interweb and it looks so good that I think I might pop along myself! So, all you need to do is spot the three festive symbols hidden throughout the magazine and send an e-mail through to me, telling me what pages they are on. We expect to be inundated as it is such as good prize and we also gave away 5 pairs on Facebook too (so you could have had 2 bites of the cherry if you liked our Facebook page!!) but all winning entrants will be drawn out of a hat at random. Closing date is the 31st October at 5pm. Finally, on the Christmas note, we are now working on our Christmas edition magazine. Each year we combine the November and December’s editions to provide the advertisers and readers with the best chance of getting everything sorted and attended prior to the big day…...so if you need to publicise something for the coming festivities, take note of our deadline below….don’t delay and advertise today!! Happy Reading,

Emily x

A new feature where we really get to know our businesses, what got them started, what they enjoy most about their business and what makes them different!!

Shouting about...

This month we meet Jill from JH Legal... T: 01773 549037   M: 07523 963026 This month Janine met Jill from J H Legal. Carla and I have known Jill for quite a while now, so thought that the readers would benefit from a fresh pair of eyes when grilling J H Legal about why you should have a Will and more specifically, why you should choose them…

Jill, how Long have you been in business with JH Legal & how did you get into it?

I have been in business for 4 and a half years now but I started my legal training about 20 years ago. I have worked in many solicitors offices over the years, performing many different roles, until I began working in the Wills & Probates department over 10 years ago. So I guess I just fell into Wills & Probates by accident but I started to really enjoy it and realised that it is extremely rewarding to be able to help people put their affairs in order and give themselves peace of mind. It is a particularly difficult aspect to life that we all have to come to terms with and don’t wish to tackle, so making people feel at ease, resolving all the difficult issues that they may face, whether it is more extreme, such as excluding individuals from the Will, or more simply gifting personal items to friends, I take real pride in being able to help.

What kind of things is it that you deal with?

Will writing, I offer peace of mind for the unfortunate time when a will is needed. Will writing can be very complex and intricate these day, people may have children with another partner later in life, or step children, as well as many other complicated circumstances, it is my job to take the stress away. Lasting Power of Attorney, this means that a person is able to legally appoint someone to take responsibility for another person`s finances if that person no longer wishes or has the mental capacity to do this for themselves. I can process all the documentation and make sure that this is legally binding. Probates and Estate Administration, this is the distribution of the assets and possessions of an individual in accordance with the Will or the law in the event that no Will has been made. Again, I am fully qualified to process all the legal documentation and remove all the hassle from the bereaved.

How important is it to have a Will?

It`s very important, 7 in 10 people die without a Will but I don’t think people are fully aware of the consequences of what happens if you do this. For example, did you know that if you die without a Will and you aren’t married to your life long partner, they will not automatically receive all your possessions or assets? It is one of those things that doesn`t always take priority in life. The reality is that we will all need a Will at some stage. If we don`t have a legally binding document to state who we would like our assets to go to when the unfortunate happens, our worldly possessions may not go to the special people that we love.

Do I have to pay for your service?

The initial consultation is free and this consultation is very important. I hope that by having a chat with me, this will put your mind at rest and help you to see things more clearly moving forward.

And importantly… do you supply tissues for those very upsetting issues?

I always carry tissues. I totally understand just how upsetting some circumstances can be through my own experiences with close family members. When someone is upset, and you are talking about sensitive but complicated matters it is very important for me that that person feels comfortable in my presence but it isn’t always tears, I have many clients that see writing a will as a positive experience that allows them peace of mind well in advance of any necessity.

How do people go about getting an appointment?

Just give me a call and I will make an appointment that can be either in my office, or I do home visits as people often feel more comfortable in their own home. I offer my services Monday to Saturday including some evenings.

After a very long time of having chronic back ache and pain and after trying other treatments to try and get some relief, I decided to try KORE therapy. I am so pleased with the results, I now have a lot less back pain and have much more movement in my neck, shoulders and lower back than I have had for a long time. Not having to take pain killers every day is a bonus because I hate taking pills. Mara has done a fantastic job and I can’t thank her enough. Rob from Somercotes.

On apathy to the England football team I think anyone who follows England knows how our dad and his lad are feeling right now. But why? I bet we all have our own opinion... This month, myself, Janine and Janine’s children (Archie & Georgie) were invited to come along and trial kickboxing with the M1K Warriors. This is what we thought…... When we got there I introduced myself to Gary the coach. Throughout the session I managed to get a few bits of information from Gary who told me that he only started doing kickboxing when he was 50 years old to keep it! He wasn’t going to take part in any competition or do any gradings but since then he has won 3 World Championships!! He says that as time went on, his competitive nature emerged and he decided that he wanted to do both of those things, but don’t be alarmed, nobody is forced either to compete or grade for the belts if you don’t want to and from my observations, it was clear that this is the case. There was around 30 people in attendance and a genuine mixture of age, ability and gender. This sport may have the stereotype of being male orientated but this was not the case at this club. Having said that, this club clearly isn’t afraid of success either. There were 4 people in attendance who had qualiied for the World Championships in November, held in Portugal. Gary had also qualiied but has had to pull out due to a knee injury. Amidst the spinning back kicks and jab’s this is clearly a caring club. My observation throughout was that all the other trainers and experienced kickboxers intermingled perfectly. There was respect but no aggressive authoritarians and there was no lack of sweat at the end! I was made to feel very welcome and the most encouraging thing is that I honestly felt that anyone walking through those doors would be made to feel welcome irrespective of size, age, experience , gender or anything else but don’t just take my word for it…...

Janine Says…. When M1K Warriors wanted to advertise, Emily was offered the experience of Kickboxing. As I have children, Ems asked me if I would join her to take part in experiencing this art. I have to be honest, the kids were well up for this, but I was really rather reluctant as I am the ripe old age of 42!!! However I couldn`t let the kids down so I agreed. When I arrived, kids in tow, Gary spoke to Emily and took her to a spot where she could take photo’s and notes, whilst the children and I were given gloves!! (yes, no gloves for Emily!!!) My pounding heart soon subsided as the smiley faces and the expert teachers just had that effect. It is a lovely class of mixed ages and mixed abilities. Though that is the case it runs with absolute ease. After an hour of punching and kicking, not always aiming so well, I found that I actually really enjoyed it. So much so, that we are going to join the class weekly. It’s a really relaxed environment, full of friendly people, who obviously love their kickboxing. It was a far cry from the shouty, military vision that I had in my head. The kids and I had a lot of fun together. I would recommend this class to anyone of any age. If you have thought about doing something like this in the past, or if you are looking for something to do with your kids, think no more and join, you`ll love it!!! Georgie, - Age 7: Junior Reporter at The Voice.

On Tuesday Emily, and my Mum, brother and I went to do some kickboxing. First, we did some strange running whilst spinning our arms to and fro - that was the warm-up, it was really good fun. Next we started kicking and punching …...meanwhile Emily was taking notes. After that we told the leaders that they will see us again and that we loved it so I’m thinking about staying.

Another big thank you to David from J H Legal. We really enjoyed this walk, especially as we had a lovely sunny autumn day but not as much as Rafa who found the biggest muddy puddle to lie in!. At least there was a decent stream for him to clean off in later on. If you have the time take a look around Greasley Church, it’s well worth a peek. 61/2 mile circular from Underwood to Greasley A moderate walk for you and your dog. The route should take around 3 - 3/12 hours. There are some small stretches of road so please take care. The terrain is generally good but a good pair of boots are always advised. 1. Park at the end of Felly Mill Lane and continue along the lane on foot to pass the metal gate. Continue along the lane to a T-junction and turn right to continue uphill. At the top of the hill there is open views to your left and woodland on your right. 2. Continue to pass a metal gate. You will now have woodland on both sides. Continue for a short distance and turn right onto a trail. Continue to pass a crossroad of paths heading downhill. Eventually the lane bears right. Shortly after turn left along a signposted footpath. 3. Continue straight ahead, ignoring the path that bears right. Pass another signpost on your right and continue on out of the trees into an open ield. Continue along the edge of the ield with the trees on your left, heading towards the motorway. Bear right along the edge of the ield, keeping the motorway on your left. Continue to the far side of the ield and bear right to walk directly away from the motorway. Continue along the edge of the ield keeping the hedge on your left. 4. At the far side of the ield continue straight with a hedge on your left and trees on your right until reaching a road, then turn left along the road. Continue until the road bends sharp left. Gardener’s Calendar - October 2014 Lawns can start looking a bit bedraggled at this time of the year. It’s a good time to get rid of moss by dragging a rake across the lawn – good exercise too! This moss can be retained to use as hanging basket liner next summer. If you’ve any energy left, aerate the ground by sticking a fork in every few inches to loosen the soil. Then scarifying the lawn again in spring gives it a head start. Always an ongoing process this gardening lark!

Onions are ready for harvesting once the foliage has died away. Leave them to dry out before storing for the winter and then store in nets, keeping in a cool and dry place. hose with thick stalks need to be used irst as they are more prone to rot.

Cut back perennials which have inished lowering to two or three inches above the ground. You don’t have to be too precious about this. Shears work just as well as secateurs in this case and are a lot quicker and hopefully less work.

Top tip. Leave seed heads on honesty, echinacea and acanthus as they produce a lovely architectural show during late autumn and through into winter. They do not need to be cut back until the end of January, into February and will stop the garden looking quite so bare. AVVM0043 (Oven Clean Q Advert).pdf 1 21/07/2014 08:53

Mortgages  •  Re-mortgages  •  Buy to let mortgages  •  Life cover Buildings & contents insurance  •  Over 25 years experience Please contact us for professional, friendly advice. Gold Independent Financial Services Ltd based in Ripley offers advice on mortgages and insurance so whether you’re a first time buyer, remortgaging, moving or wanting to purchase a property to let we can help. Wayne Bates the Managing Director has worked in financial services for 26 years; following a successful career with a leading insurance firm he decided to set up his own advisory firm; Gold started trading in 1998 and since then it has helped thousands of clients realise their dreams of owning their own home. Wayne truly believes the customer comes first and his focus is on providing clients with a first class service, he wants you to be pleased that you used Gold for your mortgage needs and when you need advice in the future you automatically think of Gold. The business has grown on the back of strong customer service and the majority of new clients are referrals from existing clients who we continue to look after. Our regulator, The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) believes that in the past, some people were allowed to take out a mortgage they could not afford. This led to some of them falling behind with their payments or losing their home. The FCA has looked at how the process of getting a mortgage can be improved to prevent these problems. As a result they introduced new rules on 26 April 2014, to make sure that when you take out a mortgage: •you can afford it •it suits your needs and circumstances Our job is to research the mortgage market to find the deal that we believe is most appropriate for you taking your personal circumstances, needs and objectives into account. The mortgage lenders must satisfy themselves that you can afford your repayments now and in the future but we will consider this before any application is submitted. It is therefore important that when we meet, you are able to provide us with full details of your income and a breakdown of your monthly expenditure.

Another of the new rules introduced by the FCA is to stop mortgages being taken out without full advice (except under certain circumstances). Many lenders only offering their own products have been affected by this change but as a mortgage broker we have always provided this type of advice and pride ourselves on giving you the best service possible. The new rules cover mortgages where you use your own home as security for the loan, but do not cover buy-to-let mortgages or second mortgages. Wayne is fully trained and qualified to give advice on all types of mortgages from across the entire mortgage market so a call today could stop you from paying too much for your mortgage either now or in the future. We have all seen the effects that the dreadful weather, that has hit the UK earlier in the year, has had on homes, so once you have bought your property it is important that you take out adequate insurance, your lender will insist on buildings cover but you should not forget to insure the contents of your home. We can source products from a panel of insurers to provide you with competitive cover, even if you already have a policy there is no harm in looking at your options. Wayne is often surprised by how many of his clients have failed to take out life cover or critical illness protection; everyone insures their car but too many people forget to insure what is most important to their families. We don’t want to scare anybody but research shows that one in three people will be affected by some sort of cancer in their lifetime. There are over 200 types of cancer, that can attack different parts of the body and with advances in medical science survival rates are improving. A full review of your needs and circumstances can be carried out at any time; you don’t need to be speaking to us about a mortgage.

For a free no obligation meeting please phone us on 01773 744660. We will always make you feel welcome, the kettle is always on.

Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. We will only charge you a fee of up to 1% of the amount borrowed (for example if the mortgage is £75,000 the fee is £750), subject to a minimum of £500, payable on completion of your mortgage. We will agree the fee with you before any advice is provided. We do not charge fees for arranging life cover or buildings & contents insurance.

The eagle Tavern Dear customers old and new

I’d just like to introduce us as the new owners of the Eagle Tavern. My names Mark Bennett and whilst I don’t run the pub, I have a say in it’s future, I back it financially and I do a lot of the day to day operations. Myself and my business partner have over 30 years experience in the pub industry and we currently run 6 other pubs in the midlands area. Our manager Andrea Billings is the landlady, she has vast experience and is a fantastic cook. We are fortunate to have inherited a fantastic pub, when the pub was offered to us, I was a customer and I still am. We are offering perfectly kept beer with 3 hand pulls on at any one time. We are also looking at getting a cider on the pump. Lagers, bottled lagers and ciders as well as wine in a lovely friendly village pub. We are currently creating a new pub menu that will all be home cooked - even the puddings will be done from scratch. On Sundays we will offer traditional lunch with all the trimmings. Bring in this magazine and you will get £1 off each adults meal for any day of the week. On October 31st to November 3rd, we will be holding our beer, music and sausage fest. So the Devil’s work is upon us, Ripley fair, Halloween and Bonfire night. Well, I’m not going to moan about the autumn treble from hell, I’m going to look back fondly on the summer. The family and I have just got back from a week in sunny Majorca, the holiday was fine, it’s just the pain of getting there and in particular the task that is East Midlands Airport. You turn up and have to pay a quid to get near the terminal. Why? Is it worth peeing so many people off? We got dropped off at the garage and we weren’t alone, it’s amazing that so many people will walk a couple of 100 yards just to save a £1. At the check in with Ryanair you begin the hike around the carefully constructed slalom of barriers that lead you up and down the hall 17 times before you get to the nice man who says that your luggage is half an ounce over the limit, but that he’ll let it go this time. How pleased I am that they’ve decided to up their customer service, thank you Michael O’Leary. Then you waltz past the rather strange holograms telling you to make sure that you don’t have any liquids on you and into another malaise of barriers. Is there someone whose job it is to see a space and work out what would be the maximum mileage that

they could make you walk around in such a small square? Well if there is, then the lad at East Mids deserves a bonus. There was no-one in this section so I dipped under the barrier and was told off by a very youthful spotty jobsworth. It took over an hour to get through security, in part because James Peacock didn’t listen to the hologram and had a bottle of water in his bag. During the delay I was in a dilemma, I wanted a pint before boarding, but the delay would reduce the kids spending power before getting on the plane. It turned out I had time for a pint and the others said they were hungry, so off they went to burger king with another £20 note that I’d produced earlier. I went and sat with them to be informed that there wasn’t any change and that my wife had to put a few pounds in as well. Over 20 quid for 2 unhappy meals and a burger, double what it would be in the real world. By this time I was too knackered to muster up a groan, all the walking had tired me out. So my tip for the next time you fly is pay the quid, it’s probably worth it. Not sure what the outcome of the Scottish independence vote was, but you can read my piece from a few months ago at deathoftheregular.wordpress.com. Happy autumn.
