Editor’s Message I saw the coca cola ‘holidays are coming’ advert on the TV the other day, so I’m super excited about getting the decs down and embracing the Christmas Cheer. On that note... this month started with announcing the winners of the Christmas Gift Fair at the NEC. It was met with much excitement from us and the winners and I’m very much looking forward to hearing how it all went!! Look out for a Chesterfield FC ticket giveaway in January’s edition... I think it is only right and proper to say yet another big thank you to all our readers and customers alike. We’ve had lots of feedback recently about how the magazine is going from strength to strength and it is only possible with your support. So roll on 2015!! Wishing all our advertisers and readers a fantastic Christmas and a Happy New Year. Happy Reading,

I for one absolutely love their events; the Christmas, Valentines and Autumn fairs, and have purchased no end of bespoke gifts for loved ones that you just can’t get on the high street. But this little hidden gem isn’t just about buying products; they are also keen on what can be done in the community. Carol holds a monthly meet at the gallery for artists on the first Saturday of each month and has also developed a companions group. When I asked what John enjoyed most about his work, he said that the best thing was meeting people and being surrounded by wonderful art, which doesn’t really make it feel like work! The friendly atmosphere is one of the real bonuses about Leabrooks Gallery. I love speaking to John and Carol about their obvious enthusiasm about their pieces and mulling over a purchase over a cup of coffee and cake in the Café. In my mind the thing that makes this place so special is the range of different styles, from the traditional artwork to the more abstract, and the themes that runs throughout the whole place are like a golden thread, from the sculpture garden, to the display of specimen acer’s and the secret garden. There isn’t enough time to tell you about all the things they do at Leabrooks Gallery and Arts Complex, such as the bespoke framing service, the books and the pottery. So why not get yourself down there and check it out for yourself!

After a very long time of having chronic back ache and pain and after trying other treatments to try and get some relief, I decided to try KORE therapy. I am so pleased with the results, I now have a lot less back pain and have much more movement in my neck, shoulders and lower back than I have had for a long time. Not having to take pain killers every day is a bonus because I hate taking pills. Mara has done a fantastic job and I can’t thank her enough. Rob from Somercotes.

Happy Christmas!!!!! At least it will be when I can remember where I put all those cute little bits and pieces I collected over the Summer for gifts. Has anybody mislaid their hubbies present? Have you made your cake, mince pies, Christmas puds? Life can all get a little much at this time of the year. My Grandson (aged 3) is already singing Christmas Carols and Christmas songs as we chug along in the car! Ho ho ho! No wonder we need a little time to sort ourselves out. Can you imagine yourself on our beauty couch at Body and Sole? Music quietly playing – not Christmas, lovely soothing aromas – not puddings or baking related, a lovely fresh coffee in hand along with a luxury biscuit (no mince pies in sight). Are you there yet? Well lets think about some of the beautiful bespoke treatments you might have without breaking the bank – such as individual lashes that are so light you will forget they are there, CND Shellac nails and toes that last for 2 weeks, a lovely neck and back massage to sooth away your tension, or a brow and lash tint and tidy for the big day. There are many more treatments I could describe, because all our treatments are bespoke treatments suited to your needs – Treatments to Treasure. While you are with us, why not do a spot of Christmas Shopping with no rush or crowds. Just pay by machine and pop it in your car in our lovely parking area. Don’t forget our ever popular bejewelled vouchers which make lovely gifts to be enjoyed in January. On top of all this, our new ARTDECO mineral make-up has arrived – fab colours and textures – a beauty treatment to treasure. Treatment No:

Reader Recommends Carol has written in this month to recommend the work of Derbyshire Rubber Rooing: “I would just like to say that it was the best decision I’ve made in a very long time contacting Derbyshire Rubber Roofing for a quote to have my 2 flat roofs recovered. Having lost faith by being let down so many times over these last years regarding home repairs. Its certainly been restored over the last few days, and am only sorry it’s only roofs they deal in. Really lovely genuine people. Very professional in there work ethic. So thrilled with end result. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to anyone.
Gardener’s Calendar - Nov/Dec 2014 It might seem an odd time to be thinking about fruit in the garden, but now is the time to plant raspberry canes and currant bushes, while they are dormant. With existing strawberry plants take off dead leaves and remove runners. Stop winter moth damage to fruit trees by creating grease bands around the trunks.
Collect leaves to provide leaf mould soil conditioner. Try to keep leaves such as oak and hornbeam which will decompose and be useable in a year separate from the likes of sycamore and chestnut which need two years to mature.
Winter bedding can go in now. Not only does it make the garden look a bit less bedraggled, it also gives a reason to visit the garden centre (yay!) or make the most of the catalogue offers pouring through the letterbox.
Top tip.
To keep your compost heap warm and help it work over the winter cover with thick old carpet.

16 Our regular walk contributor, David from JH legal, has really outdone himself this time. We are really grateful for the walks he gives us and we know you are too, as it remains one of our most popular features. It’s hard to say whether it was us or Rafa who enjoyed this walk most, as he had plenty of time off the lead to snufle his way around the countryside! 6 mile circular walk near Rowthorne Village A moderate walk for you and your dog. The route should take around 3 hours. Whilst the majority of the terrain is trails and paths here are some uneven and potentially muddy sections so a good pair of boots or wellies is a must, especially at this time of year.
1. Start from the Rowthorne Trail Car Park on Rowthorne Lane, just south of Rowthorne Village. From the car park walk back through the entrance and turn right . After a short distance turn right in front of some green metal gates to join the Rowthorne Trail. 2. Continue along the trail for some distance, cross over a crossroads of footpaths. And keep straight for a long distance until eventually reaching a large ‘Rowthorne Trail’ sign on your left. At this point bear right to pass through a gap adjacent to a metal gate. After a very short distance, bear right again and pass through a gap onto the Teversal Trail. 3. Turn left along the Teversal Trail and continue straight until reaching a wooden gate. Pass through the gate, cross a trail and then pass through a width restrictor to a T-junction of trails. Turn right and continue along this trail to pass through two more width restrictors. 4. Carla’s Christmas Kitchen With Christmas just around the corner, Carla has excelled herself this month and provided you with two recipes to spruce up your Christmas dinner table…..
Rudolph Cup Cakes Ingredients (makes 12) I’ve been making these for a few years now and the kids absolutely love 1 tbsp milk 2 eggs 150g butter 150g caster sugar 150g self raising lour 1/2 tsp baking powder Zest of half a small orange 45 g dried cranberries, chopped To Decorate 4 x Curly Wurly chocolate bars 150g chocolate buttercream style icing 12 glace cherries Sultanas White writing icing
them. It was their idea to include them in this months edition so I hope you like them as much as they do! Preheat the oven to 180C/350F. Line a deep mufin tin with 12 paper cases. Place the eggs, caster sugar, butter, lour, baking powder, milk and zest into a mixing bowl. Beat together using an electric hand whisk. Stir in the cranberries and spoon into the cases. Bake for 18-20 minutes until well risen and lightly golden. Leave to cool on a wire rack. Spread the chocolate icing over the cold cupcakes using a small spatula. Cut lengths of Curly Wurly chocolate bars for the antlers. Push the antlers into the cupcakes. Place a cherry in the centre of each cake to make a nose. Put two sultanas on each cupcake to make the eyes and add a blob of white writing icing in the centre. Chill until irm.
Braised Red Cabbage Ingredients (serves 6) 1 red cabbage 150g butter, melted 150g soft brown sugar 200ml clear malt vinegar 2 x cinnamon sticks 2 x pink lady apples, peeled, cored and chopped Salt and pepper to season
Christmas dinner just wouldn’t be the same without this red cabbage. Heat the oven to 180C. Quarter, core and shred the red cabbage and place in a large ovenproof casserole with the vinegar, sugar, butter and cinnamon sticks. Season with salt and pepper and stir well. Cook in the oven for 2 hours, stirring every 30 minutes. Add the chopped apples and cook for a further 30 minutes until soft. Strain off any excess liquid and boil in a separate pan until reduced to a syrupy sauce. Pour back over the cabbage and toss to coat. Remove the cinnamon sticks and serve.

I was super excited this month as I got to visit my favourite shop in the entire world! If you’ve yet to discover this amazing place then let me be the first to introduce you to Primsisters in Belper. Primsisters specialises in handmade country décor with a primitive, rustic, shabby-chic feel. Each one of their bespoke goodies are all handcrafted and designed in their workshop using the finest materials. They use techniques such as hand-painting, distressing and finishing to ensure that each item is truly individual, unique and full of character. Zehra opened the shop 4 years ago after successfully starting her business back in 2004 making these bespoke and personalised treats from her loft at home. Her business has since gone from strength to strength with a large selection of items now available to buy online through the website. As well as handmade and personalised gifts, they also stock a huge selection of branded gifts and home accessories such as East of India and Gisela Graham plus my personal favourite, Danon jewellery. If it’s a unique gift you’re after or something special for your own home then this really is the place to go. After my first visit a few years ago, I was completely hooked and I know that once you step inside, you most certainly will be hooked too!! They’ve also recently restocked the shop ready for Christmas! Eeeeek!! See you there!!!

Mortgages • Re-mortgages • Buy to let mortgages • Life cover Buildings & contents insurance • Over 25 years experience Please contact us for professional, friendly advice. Gold Independent Financial Services Ltd based in Ripley offers advice on mortgages and insurance so whether you’re a first time buyer, remortgaging, moving or wanting to purchase a property to let we can help. Wayne Bates the Managing Director has worked in financial services for 26 years; following a successful career with a leading insurance firm he decided to set up his own advisory firm; Gold started trading in 1998 and since then it has helped thousands of clients realise their dreams of owning their own home. Wayne truly believes the customer comes first and his focus is on providing clients with a first class service, he wants you to be pleased that you used Gold for your mortgage needs and when you need advice in the future you automatically think of Gold. The business has grown on the back of strong customer service and the majority of new clients are referrals from existing clients who we continue to look after. Our regulator, The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) believes that in the past, some people were allowed to take out a mortgage they could not afford. This led to some of them falling behind with their payments or losing their home. The FCA has looked at how the process of getting a mortgage can be improved to prevent these problems. As a result they introduced new rules on 26 April 2014, to make sure that when you take out a mortgage: •you can afford it •it suits your needs and circumstances Our job is to research the mortgage market to find the deal that we believe is most appropriate for you taking your personal circumstances, needs and objectives into account. The mortgage lenders must satisfy themselves that you can afford your repayments now and in the future but we will consider this before any application is submitted. It is therefore important that when we meet, you are able to provide us with full details of your income and a breakdown of your monthly expenditure.
Another of the new rules introduced by the FCA is to stop mortgages being taken out without full advice (except under certain circumstances). Many lenders only offering their own products have been affected by this change but as a mortgage broker we have always provided this type of advice and pride ourselves on giving you the best service possible. The new rules cover mortgages where you use your own home as security for the loan, but do not cover buy-to-let mortgages or second mortgages. Wayne is fully trained and qualified to give advice on all types of mortgages from across the entire mortgage market so a call today could stop you from paying too much for your mortgage either now or in the future. We have all seen the effects that the dreadful weather, that has hit the UK earlier in the year, has had on homes, so once you have bought your property it is important that you take out adequate insurance, your lender will insist on buildings cover but you should not forget to insure the contents of your home. We can source products from a panel of insurers to provide you with competitive cover, even if you already have a policy there is no harm in looking at your options. Wayne is often surprised by how many of his clients have failed to take out life cover or critical illness protection; everyone insures their car but too many people forget to insure what is most important to their families. We don’t want to scare anybody but research shows that one in three people will be affected by some sort of cancer in their lifetime. There are over 200 types of cancer, that can attack different parts of the body and with advances in medical science survival rates are improving. A full review of your needs and circumstances can be carried out at any time; you don’t need to be speaking to us about a mortgage.
For a free no obligation meeting please phone us on 01773 744660. We will always make you feel welcome, the kettle is always on.
Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. We will only charge you a fee of up to 1% of the amount borrowed (for example if the mortgage is £75,000 the fee is £750), subject to a minimum of £500, payable on completion of your mortgage. We will agree the fee with you before any advice is provided. We do not charge fees for arranging life cover or buildings & contents insurance.
