Editor’s Message So here we are, the start of a New Year and here’s wishing everyone a fabulous 2015. Here at Voice Magazines, we have a few changes that we are sad to report. Our Carla will be leaving us for pastures new this month. Carla has been with me for a couple of years now and has been integral to a lot of the developments in the magazines, so it does leave Janine and I with big shoes to fill.
Don’t forget to mention the ‘Voice’ when you use any of the companies in this magazine
However, we do wish her the best of luck in her new endeavours and I am sure it is not the last we will hear from her….particularly since she will be continuing to contribute with Carla’s Kitchen!!! We are bringing in the New Year with another competition!!! The last one to the NEC Christmas Gift Fair was such a success and the feedback that we have received from some of our winners was fabulous. So much so, that we are hoping to run the competition again next year, so fingers crossed! Anyway, January’s competition is 2 tickets to Chesterfield Vs Preston on the 10th February. Our dad from a dad and his lad has talked of his early memories of Chesterfield FC this month with the competition details on the opposite page. So to bag this pair of tickets, get entering!! We’re hoping to bring you many more developments in 2015 but as always, if you would like to be a contributor, promote local clubs or advertise with us….just contact either me or Janine. Happy Reading,
Emily x

Derbyshire Police Update - Vehicle Safety We hope all our residents have had a safe and peaceful Christmas. Now that the New Year is here, we would like to take the opportunity in the latest edition of Voice Magazines to remind people about vehicle safety. January is the start of a New Year and can often bring along with it some winter weather and challenging driving conditions for motorists. It is important that all motorists take extra care and follow these top tips for staying safe while out on the roads:
♦
♦
♦
Your usual journey in the car may take a little longer in adverse weather ♦ conditions so always allow for extra time. Take extra care for black ice and if the ♦ conditions are bad, consider delaying your journey. Check over your vehicle to ensure that the lights are properly working and that
all tyres are of good quality to grip the road. On frosty mornings, ensure that you have clear visibility before driving off in your vehicle. Don’t leave your vehicle unattended with the engine running whilst it defrosts as this could give thieves a quick and easy get away.
Your local Safer Neighbourhood team are there to help with any issues or concerns that you may have in your neighbourhood. They can also offer more crime prevention advice, and may be able to provide you with devices to help you safe and secure. To speak to your local Safer Neighbourhood team call 101, the nonemergency number for Derbyshire police or visit the website: www.derbyshire.police.uk.

Chesterield FC and my Childhood This month our Dad takes us back to when he was a Lad and irst got a taste for the beautiful game in a more honest and uncomplicated era The Voice Mag have some tickets on offer in this months magazine for the game against Preston North End on Tuesday 10th February so I thought it relevant to include the Spireites in this months edition.
My favourite memories of these times have to be from the 1984/85 season, when the Spireites inished as Champions, winning 16 home games and losing just 1, against Bury, who were also promoted to Division 3 in May I have fond memories of watching Chesterield 1985. as a kid. My Gran and Grandad lived in the Onto modern times now, and having said I area at the time so rather than face the preferred the old stadium ...I visited the new boredom of an afternoon shop into stadium (was B2net, now the Proact Stadium) Chesterield Town Centre on a Saturday with along with my Dad and Lad in 2011 and the ladies in the family, my Dad made the watched them beat Rotherham 5-0 and it was (wise) choice to take me to Saltergate, the a decent experience, in front of a record crowd ground they played at for 139 years, until the of 10,089. The Rotherham fans helped give it a move to the new £13 million stadium in 2010. 1980’s feel by smashing down the advertising boards and forcing the police to draw their One of those fantastic old grounds was Saltergate. 3/4 of the ground was standing, batons! the other side being an old wooden benched Champions of League Two in May of this year seated stand, with cigar smoke bellowing (4th division for traditionalists), Chesterield around, toilets which consisted of a grafitied had a great start to life in the 3rd tier, brick wall, with no protection above from the although after beating local rivals Shefield United 3-2 in early October, they have not elements, nor any running water. Non-Football fans won’t get this as it must faired so well since, going 7 games without a sound horrendous but for a young lad of 8 win until a victory at home to Barnsley at the end of November. Hopefully they will continue years old that’s what football was all about. and push on from their current mid-table position. Preston, 4th at the time of writing, and one of the bigger clubs in the league, will prove a stern test for The Blues. Enter the competition and take your kid along, just like I was lucky enough to experience. Trust me, they will still remember it 30 years later. This was a time before the disasters of Bradford and Hillsborough and although changes needed to be made to grounds, the current all-seater trend has gone too far in my opinion. It has over sanitised the game, with over zealous stewards forcing fans to sit down and preventing the atmospheres that were so good in years gone by .

Gardener’s Calendar - Jan 2015 Keep an eye on your winter pansies and remember to deadhead them as you would with bedding in summer – this stops them setting seed and keeps the lowers coming. And as soon as hellebore lowers start poking through, cut back the leaves surrounding them to give the lowers more daylight – and so you can see them, as they often have a tendency to hang their heads.
If you’ve been bought bare leaved fruit trees or roses and the ground is frozen and claggy you can heel them in until conditions are right to plant out by covering the roots with compost in a container and keeping them in a cool but frost free place.
This is a good time to cut back the foliage of ornamental grasses to a few centimetres or so before the new year’s growth.
Top tip. Lots of people spread rock salt on paths and driveways in snow and ice. But watch where you’re throwing it – it can burn the leaves and roots and plants so try and keep it to concrete areas

16 Again, our endless thanks go out to the fantastic, David from JH legal for this fab walk. Sometimes we are lucky enough to have the pleasure of his company as we test the walk for our readers. He puts in many hours trying different routes to ind the perfect walk and I think you’ll agree he does brilliantly. Our Rafa certainly does! 4 mile circular walk tvia Pilsey and along the Five Pits Trail A moderate walk for you and your dog. The route should take around 2 hours. Mortgages • Re-mortgages • Buy to let mortgages • Life cover Buildings & contents insurance • Over 25 years experience Please contact us for professional, friendly advice. Gold Independent Financial Services Ltd based in Ripley offers advice on mortgages and insurance so whether you’re a first time buyer, remortgaging, moving or wanting to purchase a property to let we can help. Wayne Bates the Managing Director has worked in financial services for 26 years; following a successful career with a leading insurance firm he decided to set up his own advisory firm; Gold started trading in 1998 and since then it has helped thousands of clients realise their dreams of owning their own home. Wayne truly believes the customer comes first and his focus is on providing clients with a first class service, he wants you to be pleased that you used Gold for your mortgage needs and when you need advice in the future you automatically think of Gold. The business has grown on the back of strong customer service and the majority of new clients are referrals from existing clients who we continue to look after. Our regulator, The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) believes that in the past, some people were allowed to take out a mortgage they could not afford. This led to some of them falling behind with their payments or losing their home. The FCA has looked at how the process of getting a mortgage can be improved to prevent these problems. As a result they introduced new rules on 26 April 2014, to make sure that when you take out a mortgage: •you can afford it •it suits your needs and circumstances Our job is to research the mortgage market to find the deal that we believe is most appropriate for you taking your personal circumstances, needs and objectives into account. The mortgage lenders must satisfy themselves that you can afford your repayments now and in the future but we will consider this before any application is submitted. It is therefore important that when we meet, you are able to provide us with full details of your income and a breakdown of your monthly expenditure.
Another of the new rules introduced by the FCA is to stop mortgages being taken out without full advice (except under certain circumstances). Many lenders only offering their own products have been affected by this change but as a mortgage broker we have always provided this type of advice and pride ourselves on giving you the best service possible. The new rules cover mortgages where you use your own home as security for the loan, but do not cover buy-to-let mortgages or second mortgages. Wayne is fully trained and qualified to give advice on all types of mortgages from across the entire mortgage market so a call today could stop you from paying too much for your mortgage either now or in the future. We have all seen the effects that the dreadful weather, that has hit the UK earlier in the year, has had on homes, so once you have bought your property it is important that you take out adequate insurance, your lender will insist on buildings cover but you should not forget to insure the contents of your home. We can source products from a panel of insurers to provide you with competitive cover, even if you already have a policy there is no harm in looking at your options. Wayne is often surprised by how many of his clients have failed to take out life cover or critical illness protection; everyone insures their car but too many people forget to insure what is most important to their families. We don’t want to scare anybody but research shows that one in three people will be affected by some sort of cancer in their lifetime. There are over 200 types of cancer, that can attack different parts of the body and with advances in medical science survival rates are improving. A full review of your needs and circumstances can be carried out at any time; you don’t need to be speaking to us about a mortgage.
For a free no obligation meeting please phone us on 01773 744660. We will always make you feel welcome, the kettle is always on.
Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. We will only charge you a fee of up to 1% of the amount borrowed (for example if the mortgage is £75,000 the fee is £750), subject to a minimum of £500, payable on completion of your mortgage. We will agree the fee with you before any advice is provided. We do not charge fees for arranging life cover or buildings & contents insurance.

Well a happy new year to one and all, last year at this time I made a few observations about what might happen in 2014, obviously most of them were spot on including Swanwick Parish council erecting a Christmas tree that was slightly bigger than one of those Japanese garden plants. Well done the council then, the pen is indeed mightier than the sword. They’ve still not done anything about the potholes or litter bins though. So, what do we have to look forward to in 2015, there’s the rugby world cup for a start, which reminds me of my 2014 ‘error of the year’. My rugby going chums and I had targeted Italy v Canada as our autumn day out, I applied for tickets and received an email telling me that I’d got 6, £20 tickets, a couple of others had managed to get 4 tickets, so we were in for a good day out in Leeds. A couple of weeks later I got a call asking me who my tickets were for, the inference being that I was going to sell them on. I responded that I didn’t have everyone’s date of birth, but gave them some names. ‘How many required wheelchair access’ was the follow up, none I replied. The penny dropped, I’d only ticked the box for disabled spaces. My money was refunded and no tickets, what a div, looks like we’ll be watching it on TV.
There’s also going to be a general election this year, so whoop, de whoop de whoop. Who’ll win this time, probably no one and we could be going the way of Italy in the ‘70’s where each month we have a different grouping of parties colluding for power. I can see it being a right old nightmare with UKIP, the Greens, Scottish nationalist’s and some other bunch of fools holding the balance of power. This might very well result in policies swinging right to left to the downright ludicrous every other couple of weeks. Let’s see what happens, but I think we’ll be in the proper poo poo, this time next year. Hopefully Richard Branson will launch his ‘space vacation’ again this year, who would you like to see on the shuttle? Maybe a few Hollywood celebrity couples, anyone who’s been on strictly x factor in the jungle? All the leaders of our political parties, Katie Hopkins, Andrew Neil? Or how about Jeremy Clarkson sharing a cocktail with Mario Balotelli? I’m not suggesting that anyone would like to see them all blown up of course, but then again………. Finally a request, if anyone knows of a secure field where I can exercise my 2 dogs, then please get in touch.

Shouting about...
K Ltd, Major House Unit 1/3, Alfreton, DE55 4LS This monthDerbyshire, we meet Richard Noon from Rock Fall kfall.co.uk / 01773 608616 T: 01773 608 616 E: sales@rockfall.co.uk W: www.rockfall.co.uk ww.rockfall.co.uk This month I made a visit to a surprising local business that has more than meets the eye. Rock Fall is a little treasure trove from stylish Loakes footwear and rugged outdoor clothing and footwear, including hiking boots and Jack Wolfskin products through to high quality safety gear and work wear and the best thing is it’s right on our doorstep, located on the Wimsey Way in Somercotes! I met with Richard Noon who told me all about the evolution of this family run business from its establishment in 1987 by Richard’s dad. Originally Rock Fall specialised in leisure and general footwear, then ten years later they began developing safety footwear closely followed by safety garments. Later, in 1998, they opened their factory shop, which surprised me as I have lived in this area virtually all my life and I had never come across it and what a pleasant surprise it was! There is a large selection of hiking footwear and clothing with a number of large well-known brands included. However, I was absolutely blown away when I spotted a large collection of Loakes across the room! As a shoe fanatic, I am aware of the quality of these shoes, I even made my husband have a pair for our wedding but we had to go much further than Somercotes industrial estate to track some down! The work wear for tradespeople is an integral part of the business and they even offer an embroidery service but the expansion of Rock Fall comes with product development and having interviewed Richard, it is fair to say that this is the best part for him! They are working on some new products now, so keep your eyes peeled for them! I certainly got a very warm welcome, so make sure you support local businesses and get yourself down to Rock Fall factory shop, it really is well worth a visit.
