Editor’s Message “So here it is, Merry Christmas…..” I’m sure that last time I looked up from the laptop, I was about to go out on a nice sunny dog walk and here we are, at the end of another year, ready to embark on many mad Christmas shopping expeditions, buying gifts when I’m not even sure if it’s what they (the recipient) want?! “Would Mabel like this?”. A common visual and audio for most shop assistants at this time of year; “dunno” is the reply of the bag laden (maybe not bags this year, perhaps suitcases or just arms thanks to the carrier bag tax!) partner who looks so severely beaten down by yet another epic trip that have collectively added another 2 years to their pensionable age. You’ve got to love Christmas! Now this is where Gary and I differ because all the stress is (usually) worth it on the big day. So, when you are about to flip your lid, go to your happy place and remember that life is short and memories are precious J Speaking of precious memories, we had 11 winners of the Christmas gift fair competition this year with many more entrants than last year. I’ve been informed that they didn’t all have a fabulous time but I had some lovely photos through from one of our winners who had a blast. Personally speaking, we got quite a bit of Christmas shopping done….oooh and that aunty who always passes some delightful comment on my editors message, we took her out for a day trip! We only lost her twice but we couldn’t quite make it stick!! Lots and lots of Christmas events going on this year, so be sure to read it cover to cover and from the bottom of my heart, thanks for continuing to read and support local businesses throughout 2015. It isn’t easy out there but it is wonderful that you are using the resources on your doorstep. Happy reading and see you in 2016.

A Dad & his Lad...

With another international break allowing a deep intake of breath our lad rounds up the first few months of the premier league season, which has been full of surprises. Not many would have predicted the ups and downs that have happened so far but isn’t that why it’s the best league in the world?

Three months and counting...

Manchester City have had a good start to the season, at the time of writing this they have played 12, won 8, drawn 2 and lost 2 in the league and I’m sure other teams have had better starts in the past but they must be doing something right because they’re sat at the top of the table. Manchester United have not had a superb start this season, they are sat in 4th at the time of writing this but had they not dropped points against teams like Crystal Palace and Swansea they could be in top spot. Leicester City have had a magnificent start to the 2015/16 campaign! And the man that has secured and helped The Foxes so many of these victories is Jamie Vardy! What a player! Just over 3 years ago he joined from Fleetwood Town having scored 31 goals in just 36 appearances and he is now one of the Premier Leagues star strikers, I love stories like these, it’s what football is all about. Leicester sit 3rd in the table. Liverpool haven’t had a flying start this season. They have dropped silly points at home against teams like Crystal Palace and Southampton who although I say that both are actually above the 10th place Reds at the time of writing. The arrival of Jurgen Klopp hasn’t brought a change in fortunes yet but it’s early days. Everton have certainly had better starts seasons, they have dropped points against teams like Watford and Norwich when really these are the games that they should be going away with all three points. The Toffees are 9th at time of writing. Other Teams in the top half Arsenal – Joint top – Great start West Ham United– 6th– good start Tottenham Hotspur– 5th– decent start Southampton FC– 7th– good start Crystal Palace– 8th– decent start

6

Watford have had a very good start considering they are new to the Premier League. They have beaten teams like Stoke City & West Ham who have both had fairly decent starts. This leaves The Hornets in a respectable 11th place at the time of writing. Chelsea. Oh dear! Chelsea have made an appalling start to this season. At the time of writing Mourinho’s blues sit in 16th place just 3 points off the danger zone. Chelsea have won just one in the league since they defeated Arsenal 2-0 on 19th September. It’s not looking too good for them so far. Aston Villa have had an awful start yet again. Out of 12 matches they have won only 1 of them, drawn 2 and lost 9. Villas only win was a 1-0 victory away at Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth on the opening day, August 8th. These sit rock bottom of the league at time of writing. Maybe a new manager will turn things round but maybe not. Steve McClaren’s Newcastle United have had a very dull start to the 2015/16 Premier League season after a promising new managerial appointment in the summer. It took the Magpies until 18th October to record their first win of the season. And just to add to their misery they have even lost to local rivals Sunderland this season too. Newcastle are 17th and just 2 points off the drop zone. West Bromwich Albion, after a poor start the Baggies have now started to grind some good results out. They sit in 13th position at time of writing. Sunderland’s start has been very dreary, the only positive is they beat Newcastle 3-0 but that is their only win. They are 19th and Big Sam has hands full keeping them in the league. Other teams in the bottom half Stoke– 12th– average start Norwich-15th– decent start Swansea-14th– half decent start MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY N EW Y EAR!

Derbyshire Police UPDate - Xmas Police want broaDmeaDows, soUth normanton, blackwell, newton & hilcote resiDents to PUt home secUrity at the toP of their christmas lists

Safer Neighbourhood policing teams across Amber Valley are urging local residents to step up home security and enjoy a crime-free Christmas and New Year. Here are some useful tips you can use to help protect you, your home, your valuable presents and your cash from the sadness and distress crime could bring: • Light up the night at home: Use a timer switch to ensure your lights come on when you aren’t at home. Most burglaries happen when a property is empty and leaving a light on is an effective way of deterring burglars. • Keep all valuables out of sight: Don’t make your home a target for thieves – keep your doors and windows locked and keep all your valuables and Christmas presents out of sight. • Mark your property: Property which is lost or stolen can be returned to its owner quickly if it is marked with the house number and postcode using a forensic security marking fluid or an ultraviolet pen. • Be on your guard against bogus callers: Don’t let anyone into your house that you are not expecting or who does not have an appointment. Always check identification and call the company if you are unsure. Genuine callers won’t mind. If you are suspicious, report the incident to the police. • Keep your car safe: If you are Christmas shopping, make sure you park in a well-lit car park and lock your car. Never leave any valuables in your car, such as mobiles or sat-nav systems. • Keep yourself safe: Personal safety is paramount. If you are going out, make sure you have your keys, money, phone and plans to get home. Make sure someone knows what time you will be back. • Don’t drink and drive: Drink or drug driving can be fatal. If you are going out for the evening, stick to soft drinks if you are driving. Nominate a designated driver who can get you all home safely. • Know your alcohol limits: We want people to go out in the Amber Valley and have a safe and enjoyable time. Anti-social behaviour, particularly related to alcohol, is one of our top priorities and we will be taking action against those who commit it. Know your limits. • Online shopping: Make sure you use a secure online payment service and use credit cards rather than debit cards. Don’t give out your personal or financial information online unless you know your contact is legitimate and mark off your online transactions against your bank statement.

If you would like more advice, contact your local Safer Neighbourhood policing team by calling 101, the nonemergency number for Derbyshire police or visit the website: www.derbyshire.police.uk AVVM0314 (JH Legal Full).pdf

Rambles with Rafa Our resident rambling marvel, David from JH legal, has rustled up a great Christmas walk that will knock your stockings off! There is a fantastic viewpoint from the new ‘rhino horn’ sculpture near the end of the walk that is well worth the effort. Enjoy!

7.5 mile circular from Poulter Country Park

A good leg stretch for you and your dog! This longer walk should take around 3 1/2 hours so is perfect for the Christmas hols to burn off all those mince pies and turkey. There is a range of terrain, with some muddy and uneven sections. There are also a couple of road sections, so take plenty of care and make sure you wear appropriate footwear for the conditions. Starting Point: Poulter Country park car park, South Whaley Road off the A632, Langwith, Derbyshire. (South car park is situated at the Langwith end of Whaley Road).

1. Standing in the car park with your back to the road, pass through a wooden gate on your left adjacent to a sign reading ‘Country park walks’. Continue straight along a footpath passing a pond on your left. After a short distance ignore the path that splits right and uphill and continue straight ahead.

2. A little further on the path takes a slight detour left and then right. After, continue for some distance and then pass through a wooden gate, a car park and onto a road.

3. Turn right and continue along the road for some distance. Follow the road around to the left signposted for ‘Whaley’ and then a short distance after passing a house on your left, turn left along a lane and signposted bridleway.

10. At the top of the hill pass through a width restrictor and then turn left to pass immediately through another width restrictor. Continue straight and cross over a railway bridge. Further on cross straight over a crossroads of footpaths and then continue with a hedge on your right and trees on your left. 11. Continue and pass a short yellow marker post on your left. At a 2nd taller yellow marker post, turn left into some woodland. After a short distance, the path splits. Take the right hand split and continue to reach a T junction of paths. Turn right and continue until coming out of the woodland to a lane. Turn left and then straight along the lane. 12. Continue for some distance and then pass a farm on your left. Upon reaching a road cross straight over to continue along ‘Limes Avenue’.

4. After a short distance and just prior to reaching a large wooden gate, bear left away from the lane keeping a stone wall on your right. After a short distance and just prior to another large wooden gate, bear right to cross an open field.

5. At the far side continue straight into some woodland. Continue along this path for some distance crossing over 2 crossroads of footpaths, both with a marker post on your left. At the 2nd footpath cross diagonally , ignoring the private paths left and right.

6. Eventually you will reach a T junction of paths. Turn right and follow this path out of the woodland to continue with a hedge on both sides. 7. Continue straight ahead until you reach a farm house on your right. When you draw level with the farm house, turn left onto a signposted footpath for ‘Whaley Thorns’. Continue for a very short distance with a fence on your right. Where the fence ends, ignore the path to the right and continue straight ahead to cross an open field.

8. At the far side continue for a short distance along a stone lane. Upon reaching a large metal gate turn sharp right and back on yourself to continue uphill with a fence on your right. 9. After a short distance pass through a width restrictor and then cross over a metal bridge. Continue straight ahead passing houses on your left. After leaving the houses behind you will pass over a short concrete section of the path with a large wooden gate on your right. After this bear left and gently uphill along a path running parallel.

‘Meet the Metro Team’

With the opening of Metro Bathrooms just around the corner, here is a brief insight into the men behind the team. Their aim is to design your dream bathroom at a cost effective price that maximises your space. They have been fitting bathrooms locally for over 10 years and with their individual skill sets (Tiler, Plumber, Electrician) and impeccable reputations in their own fields of expertise, there really is no reason to look any further. Welcome to Metro Bathrooms We are a small team comprising of a plumber, gas safe installer, qualified electrician, and an experienced tiler. We’re all good friends and have been working locally for years, and now joined together to create Metro bathrooms. The shop opening has taken a while as we’ve had a lot of interest so far and have already completely some lovely bathrooms. We’re called metro because john and Margaret successfully ran metro electrical from our premises for over 30 years and it seemed fitting to continue their good name and work, in fact you may still see them lending a hand in the showroom! We offer a complete service, design, supply and installation, or if you already have a plumber it’s no problem we can simply help you choose your suite, in fact we welcome plumbers, Tilers or any trades to pop in and meet us. Name - Lee Trade - bathroom fitting, plumbing, Gas safe work From - Alfreton Age - 35 Football Team - Spurs I’ve been working locally for 11 years and love seeing a project come together from start to finish. Me and Dan volunteered for 9 days on Diy SOS earlier in the year to help a family in Heanor, (So look out for us)! and I think that’s when we decided we really wanted to open a shop. Name - Dan Trade - Electrician From - Selston Age - 28 Football Team - Man Utd I’ve been an electrician since school and always enjoy my job. I’ve worked with lee on many bathrooms, starting with electrics but the more we’ve done the more involved I’ve become with other aspects, I love the sense of achievement when everything is finished, you don’t always get that wow factor as an electrician!

Gardener’s Calendar ~ Christmas 2015 Heading into winter it makes sense to give your plants as much protection from the elements as you can. So shrubs such as buddleia and lavatera, which you’ll be cutting back hard in spring can be taken back by half now to prevent wind rock. The same goes for roses if you haven’t already pruned them. With perennials such as penstemons you can leave the stems on to protect the crown of the plant – and they may still give you flowers into early winter as a bonus. Leave dead heads on perennials and ornamental grasses until the birds have eaten the seed. And on the subject of birds, they also enjoy cheese, cake crumbs and uncooked fruit as a supplement to commercial bird food. Last call for spring bulbs. Get those tulips in now. Spring bedding can still go in – try pansies and wallflowers.

Top Tip!

Although hellebores are known as Christmas cactus, it’s pretty unusual for them to flower so early. If you’ve a hankering to make this happen you could try putting them under cloches or even potting up and bringing into the greenhouse. Otherwise just leave them to do their delicate thing in early spring.

Gary’s Grumbles

Like many men of a certain age Gary likes a good moan. Although his approach might be a bit scatter -gun his aim is true, as he takes down everyone from Facebook to George Osbourne and even the local school. More Grinch than Santa but like the green grump he’s not all bad! I’m self-employed and have discovered that I pay more Corporation tax than Facebook, something wrong here as I don’t feel like the multi billionaire that maybe I should be. As a nation we seem to be at each other’s throats blaming each other, immigrants, emigrants, Sheffield Utd supporters, benefits scroungers or people who earn too much, for all the wrongs in society, when patently the blame is with these blood sucking, very profitable, tax dodging multi-nationals. It’s not just Facebook, but the likes of Amazon and Starbucks who have been caught out and provided mealy mouthed excuses about them doing nothing wrong. Well it’s about time that these parasites started paying their staff a decent wage and paying the tax that they morally should. Come on Osbourne you Bullingdon clubber, stop picking on the low paid and nicking their tax credits and get some tax collected. Whilst giving old George a bit of stick, what about his latest wheeze, the old ‘Northern powerhouse’ which is an incredibly bright yet overdue initiative, I just hope it’s more than words, because at the moment its proving difficult to get to the North with only one lane of the M1 functioning. To more of a local issue now and the stalag type fencing that has been put around the grounds of Swanwick Hall school, not sure why the politburo have decided to spend

such an amount on keeping the community off the grass, but at about £100 per metre and probably a mile long it must have been judged as being money well spent. I assume it’s to keep dog walkers out, but in reality it’s just another place where kids can’t now play, another wasted green space that is there, but not accessible. The local cricket team stopped batting there a couple of years ago and flitted to Cray’s hill and now the junior football teams have disappeared because the pavilion/changing rooms do not meet the FA’s standards and the school has declined to make the required improvements, well they couldn’t afford it after paying the deposit on the metal retention feature, or maybe there were other reasons for them not to refurbish the changing rooms? It makes you wonder what might be the point of keeping a large green space locked away from the public and gradually becoming less and less utilised. I mean what would you do with a big unused field in a nice area? Fracking anyone? Or something else??? So were nearly at the end of another year blah, blah, blah. Ripley fair has been and gone, Halloween and bonfire night are but distant memories and we look forward to the season of goodwill and cheer, rain, snow, fog, sleet and the bloody cold. Bring on the spring.

If on the off chance, you would like Gary to write about something in particular, feel free to contact Emily on info@voicemagazines.co.uk or 01773 604 178 / 07891 639 638 The views expressed in the column above are those of the author only and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of Amber Valley Media

This is not the case with Mark Melbourne at Refine, he is there to follow the process from beginning to end and he takes great pride in doing so. Put yourself first and book your FREE consultation today, you won’t be able to stop smiling! Book your free consultation today by calling our friendly team on:
