Editor’s Message Here we are in 2016! It’s hard to believe that I started this little mag back in 2010 and it hasn’t always been easy but I’m happy to keep sending it out for as long as you want me! Again, I have the utmost respect and am thankful for the support of all of our advertisers. I’ve used a massive proportion of the advertisers in the mags personally and those that I haven’t…well I know someone who has and that’s what makes Voice magazines so special to me. I could make it thick with back to back advertisers, page after page of same professions but who wants to read that when you can just go straight to the best selection!! I also want to extend my gratitude to Gary and the other regular contributors. Gary is marmite, we all know that but for one man’s opinions and moanings to cause such a ruckus, it can only be a good thing!? It doesn’t bode well for us all to be the same and I think that different perspectives broaden the mind. So next time you read his column, don’t get irritated by it (well you can if you want?!) but personally, he might just have a point, on some level. Yes, mostly he talks out of his blow hole but heyho ;-) Also, thanks to David & Jill who walk millions of miles to bring us some fantastic walks. Yes, they are sometimes a little long (bear in mind, I walk every single one and nobody moans like me when I’m stood halfway up a steep hill!). However, there are many hours of thought, care and perspiration that go into these walks, to bring you something different that is just ever so slightly out of our area but still within 30mins drive. In keeping with a change in year and the concept of ‘out with the old and in with the new’, we bid farewell to our Dad & his Lad and welcome Cooper’s Corner! In all seriousness John and Archie had been writing their column for around 18 months and their loyalty and commitment to me and the magazine leaves me eternally grateful. They continued writing when others wouldn’t have and I for one will miss their roguish and ever so slightly bias synopsis of football ;-). However, New Year, new start and I feel very fortunate to have Barry Cooper on board. He is a journalist, I’m fairly sure he loves all things sport and I think he might be another Forest fan (sorry Rams L)! Whilst I am on football…this month, I have 2 sets of tickets to give away for Chesterfield FC. We did this last year and our friends at NAPIT have come good again! The matches aren’t until March and April (as I got a choice of games and wanted to pick some good ones!!) but I’m sure it will be worth the wait. So, spot the icons and email the page numbers over to me on the email address below and I’ll pop your name in the hat. Entries close on Monday 18th Jan and you have to be in it to win it! Finally (before my beloved designer has a dicky fit about word count & space!), check out the noticeboard this month if you want your drive clearing or gritting, reasonable prices, any size area covered….what a fabulous idea (at the time of writing, no sign of snow but a definite possibly of some frost, so apologies if I look like a plank due to the biggest snowfall in the world ever!!) Thanks again for continuing to read and support Voice Magazines and I look forward to reaching more people in 2016 J Happy Reading,

Emily x

Cooper’s Corner Follow Barry on Twitter @bazdjcooper Let’s give a warm welcome to journalist Barry Cooper, who will be bringing all things sport to us each month in his new column for Voice Magazines. I feel extremely honoured and pleased that he has agreed to do this with seemingly very little coercion! The January column discusses the dark side of sport, specifically football which marred much of 2015. The curious, alarming case that is FIFA just cannot keep itself out of the headlines.

No matter how hard football’s governing body may try, the skeletons continue to dust themselves off and exit the closet, a closet that wouldn’t look out of place in Narnia. World football is in complete and utter disarray and for those with a genuine passion for football, they must be despairing at the state of what we all know as the beautiful game. Sadly, the people who are supposed to be guardians of the game across the world, charged with the very task of safeguarding the credibility of the most popular, well-known sport on the planet are the ones doing their best to pull it to pieces. Sadly, football isn’t the only sport that’s being dragged through the proverbial gutter at the minute, with cycling and athletics two other high profile sports that are battling to prove their integrity. But it is football that brings the biggest scandal. The governing body has long been associated with corruption allegations, with doubt continually cast over the awarding of sponsorship deals and World Cup’s dating back years. After presiding over world football since 1998, president Sepp Blatter has been suspended pending an investigation, while the man who holds that position within UEFA (Europe’s football

4

governance authority), Michel Platini, has suffered the same fate after a payment between himself and FIFA has been investigated. Platini had hoped to take over from 79-year-old Blatter later this year. Football is in such a state that the next two World Cup’s in Russia (2018) and Qatar (2022) will go ahead as expected, but with a huge shadow engulfing them that will never, ever be forgotten. Before we get to Moscow in two years’ time, much water will pass under the bridge and it will take a brave man to forecast what shape the game will be in by the time a ball is kicked under the gaze of the world. Sport at an elite level, and I include all sports in this, needs to be clean of corruption and not until that happens, will football, cycling, athletics and the like regain their credibility and trust. It won’t be easy, there will be more exposing media stories, FBI investigations and sorry revelations, but unfortunately, the tireless commitment, dedication and work of athletes the world over is being tarnished by those in suits and with endless reams of power – it is they who deserve to know that their livelihoods, their profession is clean and credible. Only time will tell if we’ll ever get to that stage, sadly, I have my doubts. Barry Cooper

Derbyshire Police UPDate

in the first eDition of Voice Magazines for 2016, we woUlD like to start by wishing yoU a Very haPPy new year

We hope that you enjoyed a peaceful Christmastime and we are sure that many of you would have received new and expensive gifts, including gadgets, equipment and bikes. We want to take this opportunity to offer you some security advice to ensure you keep your valuable items safe. Crime prevention tips include: • Security marking your property using special forensic marking kits such as SmartWater; • Leaving a light on in your home when you go out to make it look like someone is in. Perhaps consider using light, radio or television timer switches to come on at certain times, especially during the darker nights; • Making sure your vehicle is secure when you leave it unattended and ensuring no valuable items such as sat-navs or mobile phones are left on display inside; • Considering investing in a good quality lock to secure your motorcycles and pedal bikes outside your property; • If you store your bike in a shed, garage or outbuilding then make sure it is secure. Fit good quality locks and install an alarm and motion-sensitive lighting to detect if someone is outside your property; a • Noting down serial numbers and take photos of your equipment. In the event of it being lost or stolen it will help police to trace the items; • Registering your property with Immobilise, www.immobilise.com, a free, national, police approved register for valuables. If you are unfortunate enough to have your items stolen, this can help police to trace and recover your items for you.

Safer Neighbourhood officers are on hand to offer more crime prevention advice and listen to your issues or concerns. If you wish to speak to a member of your local policing team, call 101, the non-emergency number for Derbyshire police. For more information on home, vehicle and personal security, visit the Derbyshire Constabulary website: http://www.derbyshire.police.uk/Safety-advice/Safety-Advice.aspx

Rambles with Rafa Well another year has arrived and with it no doubt the regular New Year’s resolutions to do more exercise. So why not enjoy it and get out into the great outdoors with your furry companions! David from JH Legal continues his sterling efforts to bring us the very best variety of walks, taking us somewhere different each month and stretching our horizons. This walk is a nice easy one to get you going again but there still some cracking views.

5.5 mile circular from Bestwood Country Park

A nice easy going walk for you and your dog! This reasonably flat walk should take around 2 hours and is a great way to blow off some cobwebs after your Christmas indulgences. There is a range of terrain, with some muddy and uneven sections. There are also a couple of road sections, so take plenty of care and make sure you wear appropriate footwear for the conditions. Starting Point: Bestwood Country Park, Park Road, Bestwood Village NG68ZA

1. From the car park pass through a metal kissing gate adjacent to the car park entrance and turn immediate left keeping Bestwood winding engine house on your right.

2. Continue straight ahead until the path splits in two. At this point bear left following a signpost for ‘Adventure playground’. Continue straight ahead and eventually pass a signboard reading ‘Big wood 20 mins’. Continue straight ahead into some woodland and when the path splits in two bear right signposted for ‘Big wood 15 mins’.

3. Continue along this path winding and twisting steep uphill. At the top of the hill turn left at a T junction of paths. Now continue straight ahead with houses on your right and woodland on your left. 4. Continue ahead staying close to the houses until reaching a tall metal fence on your right. Continue close to the fence for a short distance and then follow the path slightly left away from the fence. After a short distance the path splits in two. Bear right and then continue for a very short distance and turn right at a crossroads of paths signposted for ‘Bestwood lodge gardens’.

10. Continue straight ahead going uphill. After a short distance climb up some steps and then continue following the path uphill. A short distance after the path has levelled out bear right along a path to come out of the woodland into an open field.

11. Cross the open field diagonally downhill. At the bottom corner pass through a gap and continue straight ahead to cross another field. At the far side, continue straight ahead to pass through a gap and cross a 3rd open field diagonally.

12. At the far side of this field bear right and continue downhill along a lane keeping a hedge on your left. Continue along the lane passing a barn on your right and then follow the lane to a road and turn left along the road. 13. After some distance turn right off the road onto a lane signposted for ‘Mill Lakes’ Continue straight ahead for a short distance and then pass through a metal kissing gate and continue straight towards a lake.

5. Continue straight ahead and gently downhill. At the bottom of the hill the path splits in two. Bear right and now continue gently uphill until reaching a metal kissing gate. Pass through the gate and turn left along a lane. 6. Continue along the lane for a short distance going gently downhill. Just prior to a metal gate and signpost reading ‘10MPH’ bear right to continue along the lane. Continue for some distance and then pass through a metal gate to continue along the lane. 7. Continue for some distance and then pass through a metal gate and onto a single track tarmac road. Continue straight along the road. Continue for some distance until passing by a barrier and a signboard reading ‘Killarney Park’.

8. Immediately after the barrier bear left going downhill along ‘Squires Drive’. At the bottom of the hill you will come to a square of tarmac. At this point continue straight ahead along a narrow lane. After a very short distance you will pass by a marker post on your right and over a cattle grid.

9. Continue for a very short distance and then follow the lane around to the left to continue with a tall wooden fence on your right. Continue until the lane bears sharp right. At this point turn left go forward for a very short distance and then pass through a gap into some woodland.

Gardener’s Calendar ~ January 2016 It is possible to get a few plants ready for spring just now. For instance you can plant bare root roses so long as they’re not sited where you’ve previously had roses (can lead to disease). As your hellebores start to show signs of flowering cut back old leaves so you can see the new buds. Many hellebores have a slightly drooping habit and flowering plants are so rare at this time of year, it’s good to be able to see them through the foliage. A lot of gardening at this time of year is about protection. If you have cordylines or palms tie the leaves into a bunch to protect the crown and if possible cover with layers of fleece or sacking. Watch out for morning sun on plants after heavy frosts. If plants defrost too quickly it can damage them so try and keep them in shade or even try some dark plastic garden bags as protection if it happens regularly.

Top Tip!

Grass may become waterlogged which can also cause a problem if there’s heavy frost. Even now you can loosen the soil around roots by spiking with a garden fork.

Gary’s Grumbles

A new year brings with it a new outlook, new hopes, new dreams, new ambitions and new starts for most of us….others, not so much! Still, whether you love him or loathe him, our resident Yorkshire man does have a real knack of calling a spade a spade. Ooh and for the record and in the interests of balance, I have BT infinity and I’ve never had one single problem and is heaps faster than my previous supplier #justsaying ;-)

Well I trust you all had a good festive break and that Santa deposited a full sack of presents for your gratification. The most wonderful time of the year has been and gone once again. I’m writing this in early December so apologies if it wasn’t so good, but I can’t tell what the future holds. What will your reflections be as we remember 2015 and look forward to another year. The terrorist attacks, plane crashes, the Europe debate, a general election, the Labour party seemingly disintegrating before our eyes and of course Derby County winning the league in January and then remembering that it didn’t finish until April. That wasn’t the greatest sporting disaster though, that prize has to go to the England rugby team who promised little and delivered even less. The England and Yorkshire cricket team did reasonably well though. The weather seemed to be quite good, up until the last bit when we had a bit more flooding, the 9th ‘once in a hundred year event’ since 2005. This was also the year of the Northern powerhouse, only disrupted by floods, the 50mph limit on the ‘smart’ M1 and the complete lack of housebuilding and infrastructure improvement. Turkey shot down a Russian jet and it transpires that FIFA, UEFA and the IOC are corrupt, well blow me down with a feather Trevor, who would have thought that. Cilla and Mr Spock passed away which means the loss of a lorra, lorra, logic and Leicester City sit at the top of the Premier league.

My broadband nightmare continues, BT Infinity, the only ‘upgrade’ that I’ve come across that actually downgrades the performance. The word infinity is what I equate to the number of chargers and remotes in the house, we now have 2 drawers and 3 boxes to keep the things in. I’ve spent hours on the phone listening to level 1, 2 and 3 support to sort the internet out, listening to them drone on about what it might be, but no solutions until one of the engineers dispatched to make the service worse suggested that I invest in a booster, which is what he had to do, and he works for them. It’s been close to anarchy in a house full of people and devices all soaking up the bandwidth and moaning at me as if it was my fault……. Anyway the booster wooster worked and all is calm again in the Peacock abode, that is until the Christmas lights went up, which can adversely affect the broadband. Technology eh? This year they sent a rocket around Pluto and discovered water on Mars, but no-one can sort my internet, it just makes you wonder. Anyway, here’s to a brand new year where world peace breaks out, corruption in sport stops, athletes stop taking drugs, multi-nationals start paying taxes and the poor are not blamed for everything. It’s sad to say, but those wishes are forlorn hopes and not resolutions. I will have updated... http://deathoftheregular.wordpress/ ...with previous columns

If on the off chance, you would like Gary to write about something in particular, feel free to contact Emily on info@voicemagazines.co.uk or 01773 604 178 / 07891 639 638 The views expressed in the column above are those of the author only and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of Amber Valley Media

Smile

with confidence Your teeth are one of the first things that people see when they look at you and one of the main things that you use on a daily basis. We’ve come a long way since teeth in a glass beside your bed, So why compromise?

Don’t suffer in silence, if your dentures are: Uncomfortable? Cause you difficulty when eating? Look ‘unnatural’ or ill fitting? Stolen your confidence because you are afraid to smile or talk?

Then it’s time to book in for a FREE Consultation With Mark at REFINE

Apart from excellent customer service and exquisite craftsmanship of the finest quality dentures, we feel that our one unrivalled attribute that truly sets us apart from competitors, is the fact that Mark is also the Denture Technician. This means that not only does Mark perform all your consultations and fittings personally but he also creates your dentures with the knowledge of having met you in person. All too often you will find that your bespoke dentures are created by someone in a lab that has never met you, hasn’t seen your personal facial features first hand and will have no involvement in the fitting of your new dentures. This is not the case with Mark Melbourne at Refine, he is there to follow the process from beginning to end and he takes great pride in doing so. Put yourself first and book your FREE consultation today, you won’t be able to stop smiling! Book your free consultation today by calling our friendly team on:
