Cooper’s Corner Follow Barry on Twitter @bazdjcooper This month Barry has a few critical words to say about the seemingly half-hearted attempts of our local teams in honouring club legends, especially when compared to the fans. So where do you stand on this issue? Are the clubs being stingy making the fans fund statues when there is so much money in the modern game or is there something to be said for the fans choosing to dip into their own pockets to honour the men who brought them so much joy? Football supporters in the East Midlands are some of the most fiercely loyal in the country, especially as none of our biggest clubs have tasted any real success in the modern era. It should therefore be no surprise that as a group, we love to hold onto the past and reminisce about former glories and one way we love to do that is with statues. We’re a nation of statue lovers and you’ll see them in virtually every town and city throughout the country, from famous celebrities to those who’ve had a positive impact in their local community. It’s therefore something of a bone of contention with me that football clubs don’t do more to recognise the impact the most influential characters in their history. Take Brian Clough as an obvious example. It took both Derby and Nottingham far too long to have a statue erected of their former manager.

In the case of Clough at Nottingham Forest, it was left to the fans to fund the majority towards a statue which now sits proudly in the city centre. At an overall cost of £70,000, the club itself contributed just £5,000 towards the statue which was opened in 2008. Derby County followed suit in 2010, when they unveiled a joint statue of Clough and Peter Taylor at the iPro Stadium, which was funded by businesses in the area at a cost of £125,000. Now, campaigners have raised money for two more of the East Midland’s legendary figures. Jimmy Sirrel and Jack Wheeler are Notts County’s own legendary management duo and campaigners have just secured over £100,000 to fund a statue at Meadow Lane in their honour.

4

My issue is this:

Credit to those who have worked tirelessly to raise funds to immortalise these figures, but should the club not be doing this themselves?

When you think of the unprecedented impact Clough, Taylor, Sirrel and Wheeler had at their respective clubs, with the success, coverage and money they’ve earned along the way – surely the least they deserve in return from their club is something in the mould of a statue?

While Clough looks great just off Market Square in Nottingham, there should be more than just a bust in the City Ground reception and a tired old stand named in his honour. As you enter the City Ground at the Main Stand (recently renamed The Peter Taylor Stand), there should be a big, grand statue of Clough there, similar to what there is now down the other end of the Brian Clough Way in Derby. Now, Wolves, having just sold striker Benik Ofobe for £10 million to Bournemouth are asking fans to pay £10 towards a statue for their former chairman Sir Jack Hayward which is expected to cost around £250,000. How can chairman Steve Morgan have the audacity to believe that’s acceptable, given everything Sir Jack did at Molineux? The majority of clubs have money, and could easily stop asking their supporters to dig into their pockets, so why not show a little respect for your history and do something about it?

Slimming World Veg Tikka Masala This month something as rare as rocking horse manure happened – I cooked a meal…virtually unsupervised! We had some friends over and as we were all on a health kick, we didn’t want to go with the usual naughty take-way. Now, I really don’t do cooking but this dish was super easy and absolutely delicious, so I can’t recommend it highly enough. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

Roasted Vegetable tikka Masala ingRedients:

• 1 red pepper, deseeded and roughly chopped • 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and roughly chopped • 1 large red onion, roughly chopped

deseeded and roughly chopped • low calorie cooking spray • salt and freshly ground black pepper • 150g cherry tomatoes

• 250g butternut squash, peeled,

• 350g pot Slimming World Spicy Tikka Masala Sauce, cooked according to pack instructions • 400g can chickpeas, drained and rinsed • 100g baby leaf spinach • 15g fresh coriander, chopped

Method:

1. Preheat the oven to 220°C/Fan 200°C/Gas 7. 2. Put the peppers, onion and squash in a large roasting tin and spray with low calorie cooking spray. Season to taste, toss well and roast for 20 minutes, turning the vegetables halfway. Add the tomatoes 5 minutes before the end of the cooking time. 3. Meanwhile, tip the cooked tikka masala sauce into a large saucepan, add the chickpeas and heat through over a medium heat. 4. Add the roasted vegetables, spinach and coriander to the chickpeas and simmer until the spinach has wilted, adding a little water if the sauce is too thick. 5. Check the seasoning and serve hot with your favourite rice and salad. For more information visit www.slimmingworld.co.uk AVVM0043 (Oven Clean Q Advert).pdf 1 21/07/2014 08:53

Alfreton & District Rambling Club 50 years Celebration update The Alfreton & District Rambling Club contacted me this month to provide our readers with a follow up on the event mentioned in the previous editions of Voice Magazines. It certainly looks like everyone had a great time and here’s what Terry had to say; “Alfreton & District Rambling Club held an evening event to celebrate 50 years since it’s foundation in 1965. The celebration was well attended with nearly 50 current and past members, including three, who are now over ninety years old. The club was formed from a youth group who were then in their teens, and then joined The Rambling Association, and has continued to meet up and walk in many areas ever since. Thanks to all who made this a special evening, and we hope the club continues and meets up for walks, weekends away, and social events in the future.”

If you are interested in finding out more about the group please contact either Dave on 07543 100 655 or Terry on 07891 517 057 for more information or visit our new website www.alfretonramblers.weebly.com 12AVVM0426 (Alfreton Ramblers Don’t forget to mention Voice Magazines when responding to the 14:44 Ads Update H Advert).indd 1 22/02/2016

Rambles with Rafa Ok, so it may not feel like it yet but I promise spring is just around the corner and this month we have a lovely short but sweet walk to ease you back in, if you’ve being having a winter break from walking. There are some fantastic views on this walk and if you’re lucky you will get to say hello to a friendly pack of donkeys. What more could you ask for! Thanks again to David from JH Legal who has been going out all winter, whatever the weather, to bring you a new walk each month.

3.5 mile circular from Clay Cross

A short and gentle walk for you and your dog! This fairly flat walk should take around 1½ hours to complete. There is a range of terrain, with some muddy and uneven sections and a few sections of road, so take plenty of care and make sure you wear appropriate footwear. continue straight keeping the hedge on your left. At the far side of the field and upon reaching a brick built wall turn right heading uphill with the wall on your left.

Start: The Cemetery, Cemetery Road, Danesmoor, Clay Cross, Derbyshire, S45 9RL. 1.

Standing with your back to the cemetery turn left and continue along Cemetery Road for some distance. Continue until the road bends sharp to the left. Continue around to the left and then after a short distance take the first right into Beech Way.

2.

After a short distance take the first right again into Lime Tree Grove. Follow this road around to the left and then to the very end where the road turns into a lane. 3.

Continue, passing a stile on your left, and eventually reaching a stile directly in front of you. Climb over the stile and continue straight ahead along a lane. After some distance the lane bends sharp right. Ignoring the stile ahead of you follow the lane around to the right and eventually pass some farm buildings on your right.

4.

Continue straight ahead and gently uphill until reaching a main road. Turn right along the road and continue until reaching Highstairs Lane on your left.

5.

Turn left along Highstairs Lane going gently uphill and then steep downhill. At the bottom of the hill and shortly after passing Woodside House on your right, turn right along a lane and signposted footpath.

6.

Continue along the lane until it ends and then continue straight ahead into some trees and over a stile. Now continue with a fence on your left and a hedge on your right. After passing a house on your left continue with a fence on your right and a hedge on your left. After a short distance the path turns into a lane. Follow the lane for some distance until reaching a road.

7.

Turn right along the road for a short distance and upon reaching an open green area on your left, turn left along a signposted footpath into some trees.

8.

When you emerge from the trees continue straight to cross an open field. Upon reaching a hedgerow

9.

Continue straight ahead uphill until reaching a main road. Turn right along the road and then continue straight ahead until reaching some traffic lights at a major crossroads.

Derbyshire’s first Digital Pcso laUnches online blog to helP PeoPle Protect themselves online

Derbyshire Constabulary’s first Digital PCSO has launched an online blog as part of a county-wide Protect Yourself Online cybercrime initiative. Similar to a traditional police community support officer, PCSO Shevani Raichura works closely with communities to offer advice, promote safety messages and reduce vulnerability, however all of it online. The first of her dedicated blog posts looks at the day to day role of the Digital PCSO, what is involved, and how PCSO Raichura went from policing the streets of Littleover to supporting the online community. The regular blog posts will feature in the cyberhub and will include the latest campaign news, address any emerging scams, and also offer tailored advice of how web users can protect themselves online.

Digital Pcso shevani raichura said: “I’m extremely proud to be Derbyshire Constabulary’s first digital PCSO and I am looking forward to all the new challenges that it may bring along the way. “As technology changes and becomes more influential on our everyday lives, it can often see cybercriminals using it for ways it wasn’t originally intended or designed, particularly on social media sites. “I am committed to reaching out to our online communities to offer advice and support around how they can improve their security to enjoy the internet safely.” To read her blog, visit the Protect Yourself Online cyberhub at www.derbyshire.police.uk/cybercrime, and head to the ‘Blog’ section. You will also be able to find information on a range of topics from CSE, social media safety and fraud. As well as reading her blog, you can also follow PCSO Raichura on Twitter where she sends out regular messages to offer online security and support. Search @DigitalPcso

Couples, singles, families, young and old, there is a ship out there for you. I’m very lucky that I get invited to see new ships whenever they come into the UK. 2015 gave me chance to see 3 fantastic new ships that are all very different. March was the naming ceremony of beautiful P&O Britannia, which I’m sure you have all seen many times on TV courtesy of Rob Brydon, saying ‘This is the Life’. April brought a totally different kind of ship. Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas is a city at sea, the sheer size has to be seen to be believed. The highlight for me had to be soaring high above the ship inside the North Star. I had to wait a good few months for the next new ship, but it was worth it. Norwegian Cruise Lines Norwegian Escape is a great ship and has something for everyone, my favourite bit has to be the Supper Club, it’s a little bit of Rat Pack nostalgia with a modern twist. Here are a few of the cruise lines I have travelled on and can book for you. P&O Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Cunard, Regent Seven Seas, Holland America, Carnival, Azamara Club Cruises, Seabourn, Oceania, Silversea, Princess Cruises, Fred Olsen, Hurtigruten, Crystal & Disney. If you would like more information on cruising or would like to be added to my cruise mailing list email me on mandy.oldknow@travelcounsellors.com using the title VOICE CRUISE. I am available 7 days a week to take your enquiries and 24/7 whilst you away in the event of emergency. Gardener’s Calendar ~ March 2016 Things are starting to get exciting. No really! After months of virtual inactivity, our gardens are being returned to us, probably in slightly poorer condition than we left them, but this is the time to set things right and, yay! start planting again. Sweet peas can be sown outside as March moves on, and so can plants such as poppies. Pot up cuttings such as geraniums taken from last year’s perennials and create more summer plants by taking more cuttings from those which are looking really healthy. They still need frost protection though. Plants won’t be the only things growing – real pests like couch grass will spread really quickly so it’s an idea where it is intertwined with perennials to lift them and remove the weeds roots. This also gives you the chance to improve the soil before replanting. Prune buddleia now before the sap starts rising. Mow the grass (which has hardly stopped growing all winter) on a high cut on a dry day. Feed your borders with an all-purpose fertiliser.

Top Tip!

Indoor forced bulbs such as hyacinths can be planted out in the garden – watch out you don’t disturb the root ball and they’ll come back outside next year.

Gary’s Grumbles I know I always say it but the views expressed by Gary are by no means a reflection of the views of Voice magazines but equally, we are lucky enough to live in a country where free speech is both a blessing and a curse. My opinion for the record….if having the PC brigade means that we are less insensitive, derogatory, insulting and outright rude to one another then so bit it #justsaying.

A bit miffed again, I noticed on a bank statement that I’d been charged £79 by Amazon for my annual subscription to Amazon Prime, rang em up and told them that I couldn’t remember joining, to be told that I’d arranged for next day delivery on something I’d bought from the site before Christmas. They then enrol you in a free trial and if you don’t cancel after a month then you’re deemed to want the service and are charged once a year. Anyway after a bit of bad language and calling them crooks and tax dodgers they agreed to a full refund without even putting up an argument. I got the feeling that the call centre Jockey had been abused so much that he had run out of arguments. So check your account if you’ve ever bought something of this American, fleecing and bent organisation. I hate to think how many people are paying for this in blissful ignorance. Talking of America another one of my pet hates came to the fore recently, I overheard a good friend of mine Paul Concannon ordering a beer by saying ‘can I get a Carling’. I had a bit of a chunter at him for using Americanisms. I hear it a lot, mainly from hip young students who are probably doing degrees in something or other and frankly should know better. COULD I GET!!!! What happened to ‘Could I have a sandwich/beer/ coffee/enema please’ or even ‘I’ll have….’ Or ‘Please may I have a….’ But not could I get,

noooooooooooooooo. The question implies that the server must fetch something, it’s just wrong. The word ‘get’ has its uses but the above isn’t one of them. Sticking with the differences between American and the Queen’s English and apologies if I’ve told you this before, here’s one from about 15 years ago. I was on one of those awful induction type courses, the only decent thing was that it was in the good old US. We were just past the bit about inclusion and misogyny and looking forward to the afternoon session. It’s actually alarming that so many of the words I used in my childhood are now looked on as being wrong and un-PC, there are just so many lovely insults that might be lost forever. Anyway back to the course and as it was lunchtime I decided to get some fresh air and as I was walking outside some woman had the cheek to ask me where I was going, I said that ‘I was going round the corner to suck on a fag’. Well, apparently in America that means something different to what I thought it did. I got hauled in front of some HR bigwig for a dressing down but managed to explain my way out of it. Never had so much hassle just going for a smoke. The fanny bag is another story.

If on the off chance, you would like Gary to write about something in particular, feel free to contact Emily on info@voicemagazines.co.uk or 01773 604 178 / 07891 639 638 The views expressed in the column above are those of the author only and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of Amber Valley Media
