Editor’s Message This month our front covers are celebrating national walking month. As many of you will know, walking is very close to our hearts, as we get out there exploring the countryside to bring you the very best walks every month in ‘Rambles with Rafa’. The best thing about this campaign is that you don’t need anything special to join in. You can take part simply by choosing to walk down to the shops instead of driving or going out for a nice afternoon stroll after your Sunday roast.

Don’t forget to mention the ‘Voice’ when you use any of the companies in this magazine

Why not check out our Rafa’s Rambles facebook page, where we have been uploading some of Rafa’s favourite recent walks for you to download and print off. In other news, I ran the 10k and walked (nearly) to the top of Ben Nevis... stupid snow and ice ruining my plans! I didn’t want to end up on the news like some of the other nutters who get stranded in just a pair of shorts whilst carrying a selfie stick! Let’s see what this month’s adventures bring but it will be hard to top April! Having said that, my brother had his 40 th this month and I was assumed to be his older sister (I am 7 years his junior), so maybe I will be happy to see May! ;-) My mad aunty has a mad husband who went on at me alarmingly because I didn’t mention the rugby and some kind of win that they had?! Apparently, I wasn’t being balanced because I had mentioned their horrendous performance at the World Cup in an earlier message…I told him to take it up with Gary who is a rugby fan or Barry who is a sports journalist and therefore he must know something about the lesser known sport of rugby?! Frankly it’s all balls to me, whether they’re round or oval! Finally, we have lots of new advertisers this month, so a big welcome to them. Also, David has settled in like an old slipper, so don’t hesitate to give him a call if you are interested in doing the right thing and promoting your business or event with us!! Environmental Happy Reading,

Emily x

Cooper’s Corner Follow Barry on Twitter @bazdjcooper This month Barry tackles a tricky subject; football hooliganism in the modern game. Derbyshire Police UPDate helP Protect yoUrself anD yoUr neighboUrs from DoorsteP crime

How to spot a rogue trader

Rogue traders are people claiming to be builders or traders wanting to do urgent repairs or work. They talk residents into making quick decisions; paying in advance and will do poor work at highly inflated prices. Older adults are more at risk of being targeted because are seen to be more likely to agree to work, or to trust people who turn up unannounced and say they are from the council, utility, social or health services, or even the police. In the most serious cases, they will return to the same victim again and again until their savings are exhausted.

How to protect yourself:

• If you are not sure who is at the door, don’t open it. • Check the identity of any caller. Confirm who they are by calling the company they work for using number from the telephone directory or a bill. • Ask a neighbour to come around to check them before you open the door. • Tell them to come back at a time when someone will be at home with you. • Before answering the front door, make sure your back door and any windows are locked and closed. • Use the door chain every time you answer the door. • If the caller is selling something or offering work on your house or garden tell them that you are not interested and ask them to leave. Genuine, reputable firms won’t need to drum up business by cold calling.

Coaching with Clair - By David Arden

20/04/2016 17:43

Clair’s of Derbyshire has quite a heritage as business owner Clair Owen started her coach driving career whilst working in the family business, Tim Draper’s Golden Holidays. She served her “apprenticeship” driving school busses and private hire before progressing on to tours and holidays. When her parents retired and after more than 15 years of coach driving, Clair decided that she wanted to continue in the coach touring industry and secured her own operator’s licence prior to providing her first short break in November 2015. Clair is one of a handful of female operators in the united kingdom to provide independent coach tours and holidays Operating from the same premises in Tibshelf, as her family did for over 22 years, Clair is especially pleased to have received several repeat bookings from satisfied customers, which is testimony to the professional, knowledgeable and courteous coach touring service that Clair’s of Derbyshire provides to local UK holiday makers. Clair has a unique bright yellow Mobile Booking Office which travels around the area enabling local residents to book and pay for their holidays quickly and conveniently. You will find Clair’s Mobile Booking Office in or close to your locality every second and third week of each month. Clair has also supported Alfreton Park Community Special School taking pupils on a day trip to a Fun Fair in Long Eaton in April this year. Clair says “my business is growing really quickly and I’m taking bookings when I’m out and about in my bright yellow Mobile Booking Office, as well as telephone bookings. I am able to offer a personal, professional service with door to door pick up and drop off for holidays and local pickup points for short breaks and day trips. I now have a fleet of three vehicles, with 51 & 35 seater coaches and a 15 seat mini bus, all of which are available for private hire and group holidays”.

Let’s get straight to the point - By David Arden

I had suffered with chronic lower back pain for years, which had gone into spasm on many occasions causing debilitating and excruciating pain, along with countless sleepless nights. Having endured numerous sessions of unsuccessful physiotherapy, it was only when it was recommended to me, that I even considered trying acupuncture. I proceeded to make an appointment with Sarah Gunn at Brierley Therapies for the earliest Saturday morning that she had available and arrived full of trepidation and anxiety. Sarah immediately put me at ease, spending time discussing the issues that I had been experiencing and the impact they were having on my life. She was very thorough taking notes all the way through this process, which I found very reassuring. It wasn’t until I was lying on the treatment couch that I began to feel vulnerable. This is however, where I wish to dispel the myths surrounding acupuncture. Sarah proceeded to insert needles in to different areas of my back and oddly, into my ankle close to the heel. I was unaware of how many needles she used as I did not feel a thing. Sarah told me that the needles are less than half a millimetre in diameter and that 16 of them will fit inside the needle that is used to take blood samples; probably why I didn’t feel anything! Sarah left me and my needles for a while returning to tweak them a few times, reassuring me that this was to stimulate the blood flow to the affected areas. I actually found the process relaxing, so much so that I nodded off. The entire process lasted nearly two hours but I was shocked to discover that I felt a spring in my step as I left and didn’t feel as reliant on my walking stick. I have returned on three occasions when I have felt the need, during the last year and I have found acupuncture to be a really positive experience.

Gardener’s Calendar ~ May 2016 Lawns can be a bit of a problem area in spring – they rarely emerge from the wet and cold looking their best. (A bit like the rest of us then!) Scarifying and aerating are a good start to giving your greensward a new lease of life. Scarifying involves the use of a wire rake dragged across the lawns surface, getting rid of what may look like alarming amounts of moss and thatch, (another name for dead grass). Don’t worry, the new grass will grow through. Scarifying is also very good exercise, although you can hire mechanical scarifiers if it’s a bit daunting. Aerating does what it says on the tin – you push the tines of your big garden fork about three of four inches into the lawn, at intervals of four to five inches, right across the garden. You can also buy shoes which have tines in the sole which makes it slightly easier, but again it’s a strenuous job. This gives the roots room to spread - often soil under lawns becomes very compacted. Finally brush sharp sand into the holes to keep the drainage going. When your spring bulbs have gone over is the time to divide them to create new patches next year. Dig clumps up whole, prise the bulbs apart taking care not to damage roots and stems and replant in their new home about three times the depth of the bulb. Keep them well watered at first. They will die down anyway but will have taken in the nourishment they need for next year by then.

Top Tip!

All that moss you collected by scarifying the lawn can be used to line hanging baskets. It’s a good idea to line the basket with plastic first to retain moisture in the basket and poke the moss between that and the outside frame.

Gary’s Grumbles This month our Gary is having a whinge about having to remember too many passwords. I can only imagine it has something to do with age ;). I did enjoy his little tale about the revels of a bunch of rugby loving pensioners. Nowt like growing old (dis)gracefully is there!

This month my main gripe is with Sainsbury’s and it’s online banking service, I know about all things security but my God they make a meal of it. Username, password (between 8-20 mixture of characters and numbers) then onto the security questions, favourite singer, place and name. Finally a secret question with a secret answer. That’s 7 words all together that you have to remember to get through to where you want to be, it’s ridiculous and especially when you bear in mind that the biggest security no-no is to write down your passwords. There used to be a bloke from Rotherham called Roy Blackham who was on a TV programme and could recite a football team from any given match, he was asked who’d painted the goal posts of one particular cup final, and he knew. I feel like finding out if he’s still alive and if he is then I’ll employ him to remember my passwords. The other thing that got right on my wotsits was that when I rang them up on the number given on their website I was told that there’d be a charge when dialling from a mobile and given another number, why oh why couldn’t they just put that information on the website and save me a few precious seconds. Then again they probably charged me, but at least had the good grace to tell me that they were robbing me.

With a bit of luck, when you read this, Sheffield Wednesday will have made the play-offs and, maybe Derby County. I hope so, because I want to beat them in the final. And before any of you Forest fans start jigging about remember there’s a possibility of you going down to the old 3rd division again. The pothole has been filled by the way. Did you read about the stag do that got out of hand and had to have their plane diverted because of drunken and riotous behaviour? Well let me tell you that there’s no age limit to being naughty on an aeroplane. Our recent annual rugby trip was nearly ruined by the on board drinking antics of 3 of Amber Valley’s finest pensioners, obviously I can’t name them so let’s just call them Malc, Welsh Jeff and Slate. One of them fell over at the Customs check and another had a moment in the bar that we watched the England Wales game in. He later told me that he couldn’t remember much at all about the match and I explained to him that maybe that was because there wasn’t a TV on the ceiling. If I were to tell you that the aggregate age of the trio is above 225 then you’ll realise that it’s not just the young ‘uns. I hope they recover and are still with us for next year’s trip. Every days a bonus boys!

If on the off chance, you would like Gary to write about something in particular, feel free to contact Emily on info@voicemagazines.co.uk or 01773 604 178 / 07891 639 638 The views expressed in the column above are those of the author only and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of Amber Valley Media
