Editor’s Message So where’s this year going then?! It is absolutely flying by with longest day looming this month, which is lovely thinking about all the sunny days we have left to come….???!!!*fingers crossed, touch wood, rub a rabbit’s foot*
Don’t forget to mention the ‘Voice’ when you use any of the companies in this magazine
We’ve been making the most of the weather whilst it lasts to get out and about with our Rafa and crack on with ‘Project Garden’, which you’ll read about in my reviews. Perhaps not as adrenalin filled as previous months but I still have that flying lesson in the offing, which I’ll tell you all about when I pluck up the courage to book it! I’m delighted to let you know the winner of the dogs unleashed competition was Chris Nowell of Leabrooks, so thanks everyone again who entered and I hope you have a fab time Chris J This month we have a new competition to wet your whistle, so check out the details further on in the mag regarding tickets to The Pomegranate theatre in Chesterfield. We’re planning to have a few more competitions running throughout the year, so keep your eyes peeled for those. As always, a big welcome to all the new advertisers, try and show your support as it really is hard work to build a business from scratch and I take my hat off to all these decent, honest people who are doing it every day. We also have lots of events peppered throughout the mag this month, so don’t miss out on those! Other than that, I’ll see you all in July J

Cooper’s Corner Follow Barry on Twitter @bazdjcooper With the football season drawing to an end a big summer awaits our local football clubs, with Nottingham Forest in particular facing a great deal of uncertainty. Some see better times ahead after a turbulent present whilst others see only doom and despair. Barry gives us his take on what he thinks the club needs to focus on if they want a brighter future. THIS is shaping up to be the biggest summer in Nottingham Forest’s recent history.
Having comfortably staved off any threat of relegation from the Championship and getting through to the summer without any further injury setbacks, Forest now have to shape their future. There is one man and one man only with the power to make the Reds a success in the future. They need a blueprint of achievable, short, medium and long term goals. There should be no more embarrassing talk of a “third star” or winning any trophy. Fawaz Al Hasawi needs to focus on putting in place the basic fundamentals before he can worry about winning anything, least of all friends. The Kuwaiti has been a focal point of the club even before his family bought Forest in 2012, and remains the figurehead. Chairman and owner he might be, but that doesn’t mean he should be the celebrity and court all the attention. Burnley and Middlesbrough’s respective chairmen don’t court controversy. They let the people who understand English football, quite frankly, get on with it. What this football club needs is a structure, from top to bottom. It cannot continue to be run like a runaway train, careering into oblivion. Something that’s been said a million times. Britt Assombalonga’s fine strike 16 minutes from time at MK Dons on the final day in front more than 4,300 travelling supporters showed the potential. In effect, in the grand scheme of the season it meant little. But it gave supporters and players a glimmer of hope, but nothing more than a glimmer. With a number of players out of contract in the summer, and a new manager set to be appointed in the near future, it looks to be another summer of City Ground change. Change isn’t always good and, where Forest have been concerned in recent years, change has occurred far, far too often to breed any kind of success.
4
While Leicester City might be the talk of the world at the minute, and understandably so, Fawaz Al Hasawi should go and spend some quality time in the company of Huw Jenkins. Jenkins is the brains behind the consistent success at Swansea City. Firmly established in the Premier League and operating under a logical blueprint, the Swans have built their club from the bottom up. They operate the same ethos regardless of who the manager is. That ensures consistency throughout and less upheaval should a manager leave. Compare that with what happens at Forest – well, you can’t. There is no plan, there is no cohesion and certainly no consistency. That isn’t a criticism. That’s a fact. Anyone who has been in and around the football club over the last four years can see that as clear as crystal. I would love nothing more than Al Hasawi to be a roaring success at Forest, to achieve the adulation he craves, just like the Thai owners down the A46 at the King Power Stadium are currently getting. But, for now, the success at the Foxes and sustained success at Swansea is nothing but a distant dream on the banks of the Trent. And it’s so frustrating. Forest are a shell of a football establishment and, while the appointment of a manager is clearly important, it’s what happens behind that which will be more important in the longer term. Al Hasawi talks about appointing a CEO, and allowing him to do the job properly. Let us not forget, in Paul Faulkner, that’s what he had before. Forgive me if I don’t subscribe to the same rhetoric that seemingly gets trotted out each and every summer. But we have all been here before, time and time again. It’s getting more than a little tiresome. Somebody needs to grab Nottingham Forest, and drag it kicking and screaming into the real world and into 2016. If Al Hasawi is to be the man to do that, then he must understand his previous mistakes, but allow his ego to accept those that know what they are doing, and let them help. Investment might be forthcoming from Greece, but investment hasn’t been Forest’s problem under the Al Hasawi’s. It’s been the most simple of tasks that have proved unquestionably difficult and, until those simple things are taken care of, the bigger goals will be unachievable.

The
Of Business Growth
Have you ever wondered why some businesses in the Alfreton and Swanick areas grow, prosper and ultimately make more money than others? The answer is networking. It has long been established, even before the rise of social media, that actually meeting people in person and talking to them enables you to grow not only your network of business associates but also your customer base. There are three core aspects to networking, we call these the ABC. A - Attend. This is the most important part of networking as it is very difficult to network effectively if you do not turn up.
6
B - Be yourself. By being yourself and not a ‘cold caller sales person’ you will achieve greater benefits from networking. C - Communicate. It is no good attending an event and then not talking to people. The whole point is to talk, mingle, meet new people and communicate how you can help each other grow your respective businesses. So go on, go and network using your ABC and grow your business.

This month I met with Gareth of GJS Handyman who was telling me all about his business which has been up and running for 3 years now. Gareth lives locally and has a young family (twin 2 ½ year old girls and a little boy of 5), so it is amazing how he finds time to work so hard…although I do believe he has a very supportive wife and family! Gareth has over 20 years’ experience in the joinery trade and has put all his knowledge to good use in setting up his own business. Did you know that he can make you a completely bespoke kitchen, bathroom or bedroom including doing the design & layout on a computer, bring you samples of doors, worktops and finishes, or make one from scratch to your specification and then fit it all?! Gareth prides himself on his personal service. Whatever you require, he is able to put it all together in his home workshop, from made to measure wardrobes to garden decking, he can do it all! In terms of his home maintenance side, no job is too small and he can pretty much turn his hand to anything from a leaky tap to a complete renovation, Gareth really is a man who can!

Police are warning to van owners in the amber valley area to be secUrity conscioUs
Van owners are being reminded about security after a number of thefts in the Amber Valley areas the past few weeks. Drivers are advised to make sure that vehicles are locked, parked securely and that tools and valuables are removed.
Inspector Rob Bowns of the Community Safety Unit said: “We are encouraging owners to take the necessary safety precautions from simply locking vehicles and removing valuables, to considering fitting and using a suitable alarm. “Tools and other valuables can be expensive, and could also mean you are unable to work while waiting for them to be replaced. While it might seem inconvenient, removing these items and securing your vehicle might be worthwhile in the longer term.”
Advice for van owners includes:
• Whenever possible, remove tools, stock and other equipment from the van, especially when leaving it overnight. • Park in busy, well-lit areas and if possible covered by CCTV. • Consider parking with the rear or side doors obstructed so entry and exit is made more difficult. • Many vans will come with an alarm as standard, ensure the vehicle alarm is set when unattended. • Always lock doors and close the windows when you are away from the vehicle, even for a short time. • Take photographs of tools and equipment, together with the serial numbers so that any found items can be identified. Residents are also encouraged to report any suspicious behaviour around vehicles to police. Anyone with information about these thefts, or any crime, or notices any suspicious activity, should contact Derbyshire police on 101 or call crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Metro Bathrooms Review
13/05/2016 10:31
So here is something you may not know… You can simply pop into Metro Bathrooms to pick up your new taps, shower screen and any other accessories that you may need to fit yourself! A bit like you can with other well-known DIY places! So with this in mind, I popped myself down there and collected a shower mixer tap, sink taps to match and a shower screen! I was expecting to remortgage as can be the case at larger well known DIY shops, or suffer with poor quality (bear in mind I have been looking to sort this for about 2 years now!!). However, I was pleasantly surprised. Now, I did decide to have Lee and Dan to fit it and remember that I also had Tim come in and tile that bathroom earlier in the year… so I’ve had my family bathroom completed for an amazing price to an excellent standard. Thanks Team Metro, I can’t recommend you highly enough!

Slimming World Recipe Double Chocolate and Berry Pavlova With Summer showing up sporadically and BBQ’s poised for action, you always need a quick and light dessert at the ready for your guests. So why not give this one a try and apparently you can vary the fruit topping as well!
Method:
1. Preheat your oven to 160°C/140°C Fan/Gas Mark 3. Draw an 8in/20cm circle on a sheet of non-stick baking parchment and place on a baking tray. Spoon into the circle on the baking parchment. 2. Place in the oven, immediately reduce the heat to 140°C/120°C Fan/Gas Mark 1 and bake for about 1 hour, or until the meringue is crisp to touch. Allow to cool, then peel off the paper and place on a serving plate. 3. Beat the quark, yogurt and sweetener together. Spoon over the meringue and top with the berries. Melt the chocolate in two bowls over pans of simmering water. Drizzle over the pavlova and serve. 5.5 Syns per serving. For more information visit www.slimmingworld.co.uk

Rambles with Rafa This week we have a fantastic summer walk so you can get out there and make the best of the warmer weather. Rafa loves a mix of surroundings, woods, fields, country lanes and of course streams and ponds and this walk has them all. Elmton is a lovely village and the Elm Tree pub is definitely worth a stop for a thirst quenching drink after a long walk and its dog friendly too! Thanks to David from JH legal for another lovely day out!
6 mile circular from St Peter’s Church, Elmton
A lovely walk for you and your dog! This walk is fairly flat and should take around 2-2½ hours to complete. There is a range of terrain, with some possibly muddy and uneven sections and a few sections of road, so take plenty of care and make sure you wear appropriate footwear.

Continue straight along the footpath for some distance and then drop down steeply into a dip and back up the other side. After continue straight ahead until reaching a road.
8.
Cross straight over the road and pass through a gap onto a footpath. Continue straight ahead for some distance until passing through two metal width restrictors and then continue along a tarmac path. Follow the tarmac path around to the right and pass a recreation ground on your left. Then follow the path around to the left, pass through a metal width restrictor and onto a road.
9.
Turn right along the road for a short distance and then turn left onto a tarmac footpath between house numbers 34 and 36. After a short distance pass through a metal chicane and continue straight along a narrow road.
10.
Continue until reaching a T junction and turn right. After a very short distance at another T junction turn left along a main road. After a short distance turn right along ‘Elmton Close’. Near the end of Elmton Close you will see a small green on your left. Ignore the tarmac path in the far left hand corner of the green and take the footpath just to the right of this.
Continue straight ahead and after a short distance you will pass by a metal width restrictor.
11.
Continue straight ahead along the footpath for some distance until passing through a metal width restrictor. After a short distance, at a T junction of paths turn right to pass immediately through another metal width restrictor.
12.
Continue along a tarmac lane and pass by some barn conversions on your left. Just after the barns the lane splits in two. Take the left split and then as the lane bends around to the left continue straight ahead to pass through a gap into a field along a sign posted footpath.
13.
Continue straight ahead across the field with a hedge on your right. At the far side pass through a gap and continue to cross another field with a hedge on your right.
14.
At the far side of this field you will reach a lane. Turn left along the lane for a short distance and then at an opening in the hedge turn right to continue with a hedge on your right.
15.
Continue straight ahead until passing through a wooden gate and onto a road. Turn left along the road for a short distance and then turn right onto a signposted footpath.
16.
Continue straight ahead to cross a field with a hedge on your left and then pass through a gap and continue straight to cross an open field. At the far side of the field pass through a gap and turn left onto a road leading back to the start.

Gardener’s Calendar ~ June 2016 Time to thin out your hardy annuals. It seems harsh when you’ve brought so many little seedlings on; but it’s the only way to get loads of flowers. So marigolds, cornflowers, nigellas etc can all be spaced to a foot apart. It means the leaves have more room to grow, the plant produces more nutrients and it will grow bigger and flower better. If you’ve got gaps in the border but don’t fancy shelling out for plants at the nursery, seeds such as poppies will grow to flowering point in eight weeks so long as you prepare the ground well. They’re best sown in warm fine soil. They don’t like having to re-root themselves so it’s best to sow where they are going to grow rather than trying to pot them on. It’s hard to know exactly when to plant out all your greenhouse grown seedlings but the beginning of June is pretty safe – just keep some fleece to hand in case you need to give them a temporary duvet if there’s a sharp late frost!
Top Tip!
Pinch out plants as they grow. It delays the flowers’ arrival slightly but gives you much bigger bushy plants and more blooms in the long run. Also remember to keep taking side shoots from upright tomatoes to encourage fewer stronger fruit producing stems.

Editor’s Choice – Project Garden!
Voice magazines has been up and running for 6 years now and throughout that time I have written about ‘Project Garden’ on more than one occasion! Each year I’ve tried to improve the garden a bit at a time and next up was the dreaded steps! Paul and Daniel Burrell are a father and son team of joiners (Paul Burrell Joinery and Sandhills Joinery respectively). Ordinarily, these wood working extraordinaires will create a bespoke kitchen, bathroom and wardrobe type projects from scratch, creating a quality product that has been purpose built for you. However, my project was a bit different as although it’s not something they do every week, this time of year allows them to undertake all types of garden projects. Me being me, I let them get on with it and then realised half way through that I hadn’t given them any guidelines at all! But despite this they were starting to create something I could never have envisaged and four hours later, when they had nearly finished, I was blown away. Paul and Daniel created a wonderful feature and to be honest, it has made us rethink some of the ideas we had for the garden. The pictures don’t do it justice - You cannot see a join and talk about tidy! I doubt there is anything these pair can’t turn their hand to in woodwork. With over 30 years’ experience from Paul combined with Daniels flair for design demonstrated by all the awards he won at college such as 2014 winner of the Merlane trophy sponsored by the institute of Carpenters… they really are a winning team. I can’t thank them enough or praise them highly enough to be honest. I’m just annoyed that I didn’t go to them sooner!

Gary’s Grumbles Has our Gary turned over a new leaf? Apparently he was running out of things to grumble about! Well I soon solved that problem, actually my dad did…I am going to be in so much trouble for providing Gary with the ‘abridged/paraphrased’ version of what he requested! If anyone else fancies having a pop at Gary I’m always happy to pass on your comments. It does seem to get him going ;-)
I have a feeling that I’m running out of things to moan about so I asked Emily for her thoughts. She told me that her dad ‘thinks you are a raging Labour supporter because you are always slagging off the Tories’, and he wanted to know what I thought about that Corbyn bloke. Well never one to shirk a challenge here goes. I am left leaning, but probably not ‘raging’ so he’s half right. What do I think of Corbyn? Well I agree with much of what he says and I believe he is one of the very few sincere Politicians around, but and it’s a big BUT, some of the stuff he comes out with makes it easy for the media to ridicule him and eventually the ridicule becomes fact and sticks. In short I’m afraid this makes him unelectable, add in the beard and the result is - loser. Having just said that he’s sincere, it has to be stated that he has been anti Europe for decades and has now changed his tune for Political reasons. His lack of principle and backbone has left many ‘left leaning’ people without a voice. It’s not all about closing our borders and immigration, there are other arguments to be had and they are not being heard. So Emily’s Dad, on reflection I think he’s a bit of a clown. Whatever your thoughts on Tony Blair, he played the media game and won 3 elections and that is what is now required to be successful in Politics. Ed Milliband didn’t lose the last election because the Tories had such great policies, he lost it because of his
inability to eat a bacon sandwich without gurning like a demented buffoon and his uncanny resemblance to Wallace of Gromit fame. Milliband and Corbyn both belong to the effete Metropolitan elite, the sandal wearing, vegan, sunflower seed munching, Islington branch of the Labour movement. Until the Labour party return to the ‘common man’ they will remain in opposition, probably for eternity. Oh for Dennis Skinner being 50 years younger. To finish off, on to lighter things, the bachelor boy, our Cliff has just had his case sent to the DPP to see if he should stand trial for various wrong doings. I’ve said before that he’d be the next one to fall and I know that it will upset some of you, but just remember that he probably didn’t get past the heavy petting stage with Una Stubbs and Sue Barker, that was all a front. If he does go down, then I’ll let you into something I overheard 35 years ago. Not sure what date you’ll be reading this but I’m off to Hillsborough in a few hours with my little lad and a few mates hoping that the Owls can overcome Brighton in the Championship play off semi-final. I could well have egg on my face with this, but last month I did predict that Wednesday and Derby would make the play offs, get through to the final, resulting in the Owls doing the Rams 3-1.

Louise’s TraveL Page HI my name is Louise and I would like to welcome you to my monthly travel page. I have lived in the village most of my life and worked in travel for almost 30 years. Each month I will bring you the latest travel news and information to help you with your holiday or business trip.
Another reason to book your travel with someone you can trust.
There have been lots of reports of people turning up at the airport for their flight to America and not being able to fly as they have an out of date passport. The danger period for these passports are those renewed between April and October 2006 as some will, like my own passport be the ones without the electronic chip. I can still travel on my passport, just not to the USA. If you are unsure if your passport is the new e-passport, I am more than happy to look at this for you but the picture below should give you better clarity. If your passport is like the top one that shows a symbol that looks like an envelope you are good to go – if like the bottom one, you will need a new passport. You do still need an ESTA to travel to America even with the new passport. As part of my service I always check you have the correct documentation and advise if you need travel authority of any kind.
“I always book my travel, business or holiday through Louise as I know that every part of the trip is checked and double checked and that if I need a visa this will be taken care of – service like this is hard to find in this day and age so I am really grateful we found Louise.“ Joanne Jones I don’t charge a fee for the service I provide as the suppliers I can use pay me a commission. As a truly independent agent I am not tied to any tour operators so you can rest assured that the holiday or business travel trip you book is perfect for you. If you would like to meet me for a chat to discuss your plans, I now have an office in the South Normanton Business Centre and would love to have a cuppa with you to talk about your travel plans. Give me a call and I will get the kettle on. I am available 7 days a week to take your enquiries and 24/7 whilst you are away in the event of an emergency. For all your travel needs, business or leisure please call me on 01773 318910 / 07973 306280 or email me louise.cutting@travelcounsellors.com and experience the very best in customer service.
