Editor’s Message I’m not sure if it is just me or whether everyone else feels the same but this month has been really weird?! The referendum feels like ages ago but actually it hadn’t even happened yet this time last month (based on the time of writing). Obviously this sent the world of politics into melt down, with MP’s and PM’s resigning left, right and centre (pun intended), more terrorist threats, a military coup, an England manager resigning and replaced after another woeful tournament and finally, summer decided to rock up and catch us all by surprise! In defence of the weather guessers, if you say something enough times the law of probability states that you’ll be right at some point…Voila a BBQ summer J Rafa (fingers crossed, knock on wood, rub a rabbits foot etc etc) seems to be on the right track. We have another scan at the end of the month which should tell us for certain whether the bone has connected properly and the plate is holding but so far so good. Thanks so much to all the well-wishers. I’ve had loads of texts this month about him (everybody loves Rafa) and thanks to all my wonderful advertisers who have been understanding about the fact that I’m penned in working from home. Also to our wonderful friends and family who have dug Liam and I out of a hole on more than one occasion this month!!! Check out the ‘things to do’ this month as autumn footprints is back. For the 2500 homes that may remember, my very first mag had a double page spread about this walking festival six years ago…. We also have another competition to tantalise you this month and a voucher for Homesford Tea Rooms. As always a big welcome to our new advertisers and remember to keep supporting these local businesses, there’s a lot going on in the world outside at the minute so let’s keep the cogs whirring on our local economy! Happy Reading,
Emily x

Cooper’s Corner Follow Barry on Twitter @bazdjcooper Nottingham Forest writer at the Nottingham Post Another major football tournament brings another England calamity. So who’s to blame and how do we fix it? As always there are more questions than answers. Whilst Hodgson resigned and the players ability and mental strength is questioned the FA sits in its ivory tower. Let’s see what Barry has to say…
A summer of so much promise, hope, and expectation was once again a failed disappointment. It seems no matter how much we might want our England team to excel at a major tournament, it just doesn’t happen.
England boasted the only unbeaten record across Europe in qualifying for Euro 2016, but that counted little when it came to the tournament itself in France. Roy Hodgson, the Three Lions’ coach stuck with predominantly the same squad and shape throughout the two years in the build-up, but then seemingly got confused when it came down to the real thing. The former Liverpool boss fell on his sword in a strange and unconvincing manner following the embarrassing 2-1 quarter-final defeat to Iceland in Nice. Hodgson resigned, after four games where England were lacking in energy, ideas and ultimately, like in Brazil two years earlier, departed a major competition with something of a whimper. But why? What’s the reason the nation that invented the game and adores it like no other cannot add to the solitary major win it has. And that was in 1966. You may have heard about that one before… It isn’t down to the lack of quality, and that’s a belief I’ve had for years. England might not have a Gareth Bale, and quite possibly an Aaron Ramsey, but it has nine other players. Better players. But despite what England and those in the glass towers of FA headquarters at Wembley may tell you, they don’t have the mental strength or toughness to deal with the
6
type of pressure associated with being an England player at the very highest level. Wales and Iceland showed the way in what was ultimately a tournament devoid of quality and entertainment, the poorest for a long time. Those sides showed that spirit and courage can go a long way. England lacked both. Hodgson’s men should have made it through to the last eight at the very least, but it was never really on. The FA are confused, they lack direction and any clear plan of what they’re trying to do. Following the shambles at the World Cup in Brazil two summers ago, the FA commissioned an in-depth look at the state of the game - England’s DNA was its title. It suggested players singing the national anthem, wearing a suit and making sure their collar was neatly aligned. Those things don’t win you matches at major tournaments, keeping things simple and ensuring players understand what it takes to be successful, is what helps. When you pamper your players, baby them and don’t allow them to express themselves, then you’ll get the suitable response. Wales got to the semi-final because the Welsh FA created an open, mature and adult environment which allowed their average set of players (aside of Bale and Ramsey) to flourish and embrace their success. Over at England, the babies were being put to bed with one cuddle too many. Just let them breath, you never know, it might just work.

Method:
Serves 4 Ready in 30-60 minutes
1. Preheat the grill to medium. 2. Spray a non-stick frying pan with low calorie cooking spray and place over a medium heat. Add the onion and fry for 5 minutes to soften, then stir in the garlic and cook for 1 minute. Tip into a mixing bowl to cool then add the remaining ingredients. Mix well with your hands, divide the mixture into four portions and shape each one into a patty. 3. Put the burgers on to the grill pan and grill at the furthest point from the heat for 20 minutes or until cooked through, turning halfway. Reduce the heat if the burgers are cooking too quickly. 4. Serve hot with salad. Tip: These burgers are available as part of the Slimming World food range in Iceland stores.

illy Rambles with T Rafa The Homesford Cottage
The Homesford Cottage
This month we are using Homesford Rooms, a recent Tea Rooms Tea & Textile Workshop Tea Rooms & addition to our advertisers, as a fantastic starting point for a Textile Workshop lovely walk and a perfect place for a post walk bite to eat or drink (turn to page 16 for a voucher). Tilly has been filling in again for Rafa, whom I’m glad to tell you is back on the mend and will be rambling his way through the local countryside again soon. This walk is a cracker so make the most of the weather and give it a go! I love the variety that David from JH legal provides each month with his walks and I can’t thank him enough for the hard work he does to bring them to you all.
5 mile circular walk from Homesford Tea Rooms, on the A6 near Whatstandwell A lovely walk for you and your dog! This walk is fairly flat and should take around 2-2½ hours to complete. There is a range of terrain, with some muddy, uneven sections, which may be slightly overgrown. There are also a few sections of road, so take plenty of care and make sure you wear appropriate footwear.

Gary’s Grumbles An interesting area for debate from our Gary this month. I’m not sure that I necessarily share his views but that is exactly the point of Mr Marmite! One thing I do know for sure though is that if we do work out a way for men to become pregnant, the pension concern and Baby Booms would be a thing of the past! #justsaying #controversial As the Politics of this country seem to be changing by the hour it’s quite difficult to give a commentary on what the blinking eck is going on, but we now have our second female Prime Minister, the good thing is that she went to a state school and not bloody Eton and I’m glad we’ve seen the back of that posh boy gang. In other ways it terrifies me, it’s the memory of the first one that has me reeling in concern. This amongst other things got me thinking about the change in society and the success of women and girls. The majority of modern jobs don’t need knowledge, you could for instance learn to build a bridge or make a bomb or bake a cake just by spending a few hours on the internet. Success in the modern workplace is now all about personality, it’s all about confidence, empathy and getting your own way, and I find that women are much better at these ‘soft skills’ than men are. The ‘hard skills’ are gone, the pits, the steelworks and the heavy factories have left us and with them a great deal of traditional employment opportunities for young men. Recently I had to use a group of apprentices on a project that required them to gather information from members of the NHS. As we did the induction the disparity between the young men and women was stark. The teenage lads all seemed to mumble, were nervous and lacked any form of communication that didn’t include looking down at their feet and shaking their heads. The girls on the other hand were outgoing, confident and able to string sentences together.
The latest figures on University enrolment are interesting a lot more than half of graduates are women and the fall out rate for boys is far greater. Given time the world will be run entirely by women, they’ll become the breadwinners, men will stay at home and eventually medical science by now completely run by women will have worked out a way for men to become pregnant. Men will stay at home and neglect their kiddies and not do the housework because they’ll all be online playing war games and losing the use of their limbs. In virtually all subjects girls outperform boys at schools and colleges. It’s a frightening thought but unless young lads in general start to wake up then the above will become true. My mate Dave Mitchell says that I’m not funny anymore, this from a man who sent me a text a few days ago asking me to complain about people who start fires on pleasant summer evenings. Sorry Dave but it would be hard to get some humour out of that. You need to take control of your life and sort the Firestarter out yourself. Did our annual dads and kids camping thing last week. We walked up Mam Tor through the middle of a monsoon and then proceeded to drip all over a pub in Castleton. The highlight for me was a meal at the Cheshire Cheese in Hope, I had venison, it was lovely but a bit dear. RIP Derek Coleman.
If on the off chance, you would like Gary to write about something in particular, feel free to contact Emily on info@voicemagazines.co.uk or 01773 604 178 / 07891 639 638 The views expressed in the column above are those of the author only and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of Amber Valley Media

Gardener’s Calendar ~ August 2016 Blue geraniums are a staple of many a cottage-style garden. As you’ll know if you have them, they spread beautifully, have big bright blue flowers which are great bee feeders and the foliage is lush and dense. But they can sag and look a bit of a shambles once they’ve flowered. You can overcome this by cutting them back to the ground, post flowering. Feed and water well and you’ll soon have really healthy looking new foliage and you may even get another flowering before the end of the season. Put your dahlia supports in now, if you haven’t already done so. They may look as if they don’t really need them yet, but by the time they’re flowering heavily in early autumn when you’re more likely to get wind and rain, you’ll be glad you did. A high nitrogen feed can give your lawn a boost just now. And so long as it’s relatively dry, try to cut at least once a week. It encourages branching of the leaves – and a lusher looking lawn.
Top Tip!
You can still plant bulbs such as gladioli now to give you more colour into late autumn.

The Russian State Ballet “The Nutcracker”

“The D re rooms”sing com pe
tition is Mr rod of new gers ton
Your local Voice Magazine has teamed up with The Pomegranate Theatre in Chesterfield so that one lucky reader can win a pair of tickets, valued at £69, to see Tchaikovsky’s timeless classic - The Nutcracker, featuring an impressive cast and accompanied by a live Orchestra. The highly acclaimed Russian State Ballet return to the Pomegranate Theatre on Tuesday 18th October 2016 at 7.30pm to perform this popular ballet which continues to capture the hearts and imaginations of generations of theatre-goers. A wonderful introduction to ballet for anyone who has never experienced it and still very special for those who have. Based on “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” written by E.T.A. Hoffmann, it tells the story of Marie, a rather sad little girl, whose godfather gives her a nutcracker doll, which turns into a prince. When midnight strikes on Christmas Eve, toys come alive and the Mouse King and his mouse army battle with the Nutcracker Prince, taking you through the Land of Snow to an enchanted place where the magic really begins… This popular ballet is full of familiar music including the “Waltz of the Flowers” and the “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy”, which has featured in countless television programs and films, including Home Alone, oddly enough! To be in with a chance of winning a pair tickets to this, truly captivating piece of theatre, please answer the following question....
Who Wrote “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” on which the ballet is based?
Email your answer to emily@voicemagazines.co.uk by the closing date of 31st August 2016. The winner will be announced in the October edition of Voice Magazines. To find out more about what’s on at The Pomegranate Theatre go to…
