Editor’s Message It’s really hard to believe but Voice Magazines is 6 years old! The first edition went out in this month in 2010, delivered by yours truly to 2500 homes in the Swanwick, Riddings, Leabrooks and Somercotes area. It took me and Liam all weekend to deliver them and I remember how nervous I was putting them through doors. It’s a bit embarrassing to look over that edition now but it was a part of the journey and I’m raising a glass to the next 6 years for the whole month of September!! Everybody seems to know and love Rafa! I get stopped on Riddings Park quite regularly whilst we are out walking. He is looking lots better and we have our fingers and paws crossed for the final scan but we’ll still have to take it a bit steady for the next year apparently. However, Raf is particularly unaccepting of this and I feel that I may have my work cut out. Onto other news, the winner of the Buddy Holly Story tickets was Mrs Hyde from Riddings. These tickets were massively in demand and I’m just sorry that we couldn’t give tickets to every entrant! However, we can do better with the NEC tickets! We are lucky enough to be able to give away 10 pairs of tickets for the NEC Christmas Gift Fair for the 3rd year in a row. You know what to do, find the Xmas symbols and email the page numbers to me at emily@voicemagazines.co.uk by the 7th October and I’ll get the tickets to you. I’ve talked about doing it for long enough but I actually went flying this month. A small 2 seater plane and a woman who hates flying! Our friends Jill and David went with us and I don’t think they’ve ever seen me so nervous! Still, it’s always good to face your fears… Finally, as always a warm welcome to our new advertisers but I’d just like to give an impromptu shout out to John at Window Wizard. He’s been advertising with us for a while and he’s always received excellent reviews but our French doors decided to have a fit last week and having called John, he came over and resolved the problem and fixed a few other niggles with them to boot. They are working better than ever and he hasn’t even finished with them yet! I can’t thank him enough as I was ready to rip them off their hinges! Happy Reading,
Emily x

Cooper’s Corner Follow Barry on Twitter @bazdjcooper Nottingham Forest writer at the Nottingham Post Whilst the domestic football may be back it is the international team that is occupying the thoughts of our Barry this month and in particular the new manager. Perhaps the fact that Allardyce looks like a real life spitting image puppet makes him easy to caricature but are we guilty of judging a book by its cover? So what do you think? Is he just a long ball merchant or is he misunderstood and underappreciated. Over to you Barry…
It might not seem like five minutes since the domestic season finished, but all of a sudden, we’re back on the journey again. A new season always brings renewed hope, expectation and copious amounts of grey hairs developing all over your body.
There are many of our local clubs who head into the new campaign with new managers, including the likes of Nottingham Forest, Derby and Notts County. But there’s one summer appointment that interests me for different reasons, and that’s the one concerning the top job in English football. Sam Allardyce was appointed following England’s dismal end to a promising Euro 2016 campaign and Roy Hodgson’s departure. The former Notts boss is a maverick, but one who gets a great deal of unfair criticism. Allardyce helped to revolutionise management in England and certainly among English managers. Allardyce introduced sports science, a greater emphasis on diet and data and technical additions that hadn’t been seen before within our coaches. He’s unfashionable to some, he doesn’t have the style or suave that a Jose Mourinho or Mauricio Pochettino does. But that doesn’t make him any less of a manager than those at Manchester United or Tottenham. Big Sam as he’s affectionately known, has worked tirelessly against a backdrop of cynicism throughout his career, but he’s never been one to shirk a challenge nor has he been one to hide away. He wears his heart on his sleeve, commands the respect of his peers and players and will generate an England side that has a greater chance of success than any we’ve known for a long time. The title of ‘long ball’ manager is a term used by those who know little, if anything, about football and Allardyce has never been that, despite what some would have you believe.
6
England are a team of talent, of that there can be no doubt. But they lack direction and are wrapped in bubble wrap and straightjackets whenever they meet at FA HQ. The England set-up resembles something that you’d find in North Korea. It’s rigid, has no flexibility and every movement and comment is scripted and monitored. It’s no wonder the England playing squad are so wooden, you could re-plant an entire forest with their weeping carcasses. For the first time in many a year, England have a manager in charge who will upset the applecart, one who won’t conform to traditional (that means failure in normal English) and has the greatest chance of success with a group of players who the ability to make it happen. The English national team has failed every year since 1966, that’s 50 years ago. Try our best coach in Steve McClaren they said. Try a world-class manager in Sven-Göran Eriksson they said. Give a European Cup winning coach a go, in Fabio Capello they said. Look how all those went. All disasters. Now you have an Englishman who is desperate for the biggest job in world football, one who has done more than enough to earn it, give him a chance to get these players playing at a major tournament. That’s where it matters. Let’s say this, if Sam Allardyce was Spanish or Italian, the country would think he was the best thing since sliced bread. Because he’s English, looks a bit like a car salesman and chews gum like Its going out of fashion, people write him off. Open your minds and your eyes. Come on Sam, we believe in you.

Cover with cling film and chill the base for 30 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, put the jelly crystals in a measuring jug, add 250ml boiling water and the gelatine and stir until dissolved. Leave to cool completely. 3. Put the cooled jelly in a food processor with the yogurt, vanilla extract, quark and sweetener. Whizz until smooth, then pour over the biscuit base. Cover and chill overnight, or until set. 4. When ready to serve, melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a pan of gently simmering water, ensuring the bowl doesn’t touch the water (or melt in the microwave on a low heat for 30 seconds). Stir until smooth. 5. Loosen the edges of the cheesecake using a hot palette knife and transfer to a serving plate. Drizzle with the melted dark chocolate, then dust with the cocoa powder. Cut into 8 wedges to serve.

Reiki for Rafa! I think everyone knows by now about Rafa and his leg
problem, so when Sarah at Spiritheart animal holistic therapy said that she would be happy to see if she could help his healing, I snapped her hand off!
I didn’t know what to expect and Raf hadn’t met Sarah before but it worked really well. He is a friendly dog but as with most dogs when you are in their space, in their territory and they are carrying an injury; there can be an element of unpredictability. However I needn’t have worried. Sarah went over and sat next to him in his bed and began to open his Chakra’s. These pertain to parts of your body and 2 areas troubled Raf specifically; his leg and his heart. His leg was predictable but. the heart chakra wasn’t anticipated, thankfully it is not as scary as it sounds. It turns out that he is quite a private dog! Sarah held out her hands to send the healing energy which lasted for about an hour. As Sarah explained, it can get a little warm and intense for them so she is happy and able to work from afar when Raf wanted to move away. She completed the process by re-balancing Raf and closing down his Chakra’s, Sarah talked me through everything once she had completed his treatment. She explained that Raf may be a little stiff for a day or two afterwards but it should be better thereafter. He was true to form and was a little stiff for a day or so afterwards but he definitely seems to have made more progress since. We’ve even been able to let him off his lead for a small runabout. For anyone that has a furry family member, you know what I mean when I say that you would do anything for them; they are part of your family. I truly believe that the Reiki made a difference to Raf and I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending Sarah and if nothing else, Raf absolutely loved it! (See picture)

illy Rambles with T Rafa Rafa is getting closer and closer to a return to full rambling duties but until then Tilly ably continues in his stead. This walk starts from St Chads’ church, which is worth checking on a map first, as I must confess that due to my own bravado (and a dodgy sat nav), I got a little lost on the way there. The walk is really lovely, with a perfect opportunity for a halfway stop at the benches at point 5. Thanks again to David from JH Legal, who keeps finding these fantastic walks!
6 mile circular walk from St Chad’s Church, Pleasley Vale
A good, varied walk for you and your dog! This walk is fairly flat and should take around 2½ hours to complete. There is a range of terrain, with some muddy, uneven sections, which may be slightly overgrown so make sure you wear appropriate footwear. There is a section on single track roads and a road to cross, so as always, please take plenty of care.

Start: St. Chads Church Pleasley Vale. NG19 8RP. (Be careful using a sat nav as they may take you the wrong way. The church is best accessed via Vale Road then Shire Road coming from Mansfield Woodhouse). 1.
Standing with your back to the church turn right to cross a stile and follow a footpath with a stream on your left. Continue until you meet a T-junction with a lane before turning left to follow the lane over a bridge.
9.
Continue along this path to pass beneath some overhead power lines. After the path bends to the right and runs parallel with the power lines. Continue straight ahead until the path splits and then take the path on the left going uphill.
2.
Carryon on uphill and at the top of the hill pass by some barn conversions on your left. Continue for some distance along the lane and just before reaching a main road turn right onto a single track tarmac road passing the entrance to Woodland Farm on your right. Continue along the single track road with a tall hedge on both sides.
10.
Continue straight along this path to the top of the hill. After some distance the path dips downhill and then straight back up again. Continue for some distance and the path begins to bend around to the right. Look out for a well laid path on the left which is heading downhill and directly toward a telegraph pole and mobile phone mast.
3.
After some distance the road turns into a bumpy lane. After a short distance continue straight ahead to cross over a railway bridge. A little further on after the bridge turn left through a metal width restrictor onto a well laid signposted footpath.
11.
Take this path on the left and at the bottom of the hill the path bends sharp around to the right. At this point continue straight ahead towards the telegraph pole. Pass by the telegraph pole on your left and continue to cross over a stile.
4.
Continue along this path for some distance. Upon reaching a crossroads of footpaths turn right through a metal width restrictor. Immediately after the restrictor the path splits in two. Take the footpath to the right and going uphill.
12.
5.
Continue along this path to the very top of the hill. The path begins to descend and after a short distance you will see a bench seat on your left. At this point turn left along another footpath. After some distance follow this path sharp left and pass by a bench seat and table on your left.
After the stile cross over a railway line and then cross another stile. After crossing a short field pass through some trees and onto a lane. Turn left downhill along the lane and at the bottom of the hill follow the lane around to the left. After a short distance cross over a river bridge and immediately after the bridge turn right onto a footpath keeping the river on your right. Continue straight ahead along this footpath retracing your earlier steps to return to the start.
6.
Continue to descend along this path for some distance until reaching a T junction of paths at the bottom of the hill. At the T junction turn right and then continue straight ahead to pass several lakes on your left.
7.
Eventually you will reach another T junction of paths with a lake directly in front of you. Turn left at the junction, pass through a metal width restrictor and pass along the edge of a car park. Now continue along the edge of the lake, keeping it on your right.
8.
Continue to skirt along the edge of the lake and then continue straight ahead to pass several more lakes on your right. Eventually you will reach a T junction of paths. Turn left at the junction, pass through a metal width restrictor, over a lane and through a second width restrictor onto a path.

Networking can be really quite daunting especially when you are a start-up business. How do you decide which networking group to join? Like shoes they vary in style size and suitability – and there is a lot of choice. Obviously you need to find one that is right for you: a group that meets your needs, where your interests are put first by people who are caring, informed and well connected. Look no further! The Think Business Group provides networking opportunities for businesses of all kinds from the start up to the long established. The group meets at a stunning location, Leabrooks Arts Complex. Here you will receive a friendly welcome and be offered freshly brewed coffee and a light, healthy breakfast. The focus is on providing you with referrals for your future business as well as supporting you with useful information. Their mission statement summarises their approach by stating that decisions are made by the group, for the group.
a month, (the first and third Tuesday of each month). • You will get out what you put in.
It would however, be fair to say that there is an awful lot of business conducted at these meetings and this is due to the variety of businesses and the quality of the people around the table. There is an understanding, genuine affection and respect between each of the members and they are more than happy to share and recommend work amongst themselves as they know that they are providing the best for their clients. If you want to grow your business then why not visit the group and see for yourself?
It wouldn’t be fair to be completely one sided! There are some similarities to other groups: • One seat per skill policy. • You will have to introduce yourself and your business in 60 seconds. • You will have to get up early in the morning, (doors open for networking at 7.30am and the meeting concludes at 9am) and try to be coherent twice
Meetings are held on the first and third Tuesday of the month, starting at 7:30 am and concluding at 9 am. They take place at Leabrooks Arts Complex, 36 Leabrooks Road, Somercotes, DE55 4HB where there is ample parking.

Gardener’s Calendar ~ September 2016 This is the ideal time to divide summer flowering perennials. This includes the likes of crocosmia, geraniums, ornamental grasses and euphorbia. Lift clumps gently with a fork rather than a spade, shake off as much soil as comes away easily. Small fibrous rooted plants such as hostas can be pulled apart. Large rooted plants need two forks back to back to force the roots apart. – You may need to use a knife on these, but they’re pretty resilient and you’re unlikely to cause major damage. Replant them as soon as possible – don’t leave them out on the surface of the soil in sun. Make sure they are well watered in and keep watering for a few days at least. But with crocosmia don’t divide too often, they like being crammed in together. Clay soil sets as hard as rock in winter as you’ll know if you’ve got it. Work organic compost or grit in before the wet and cold sets in. Looking for a bit of autumn colour infilling? You can plant nerines now and they’ll be in flower very quickly.
Top Tip!
If you’re plagued by perennial weeds which will not give up the ghost, this is a good time to zap them as they’re most vulnerable to weedkiller at this time of year. Use one based on glyphosate to kill leaves and roots.

Derbyshire Police UPDate With the Darker nights of the aUtUmn noW aPProaching Us, We WoUlD like to reminD reaDers to think aboUt their home secUrity anD to reDUce the risk of becoming a victim of crime.
Although our area continues to be a safe place to live, when it does happen, most burglaries are carried out by opportunist thieves who might use the darker evenings to look out for lapses in security – such as doors and windows left insecure or property left on display in cars. Please also pay attention to the security of sheds and garages and to any items you store inside. Parked cars should be left locked and secure with no property left on display.
Other advice and tips include:
• Making use of good outdoor lighting to put off a burglar. • Making your home look occupied when you are out - avoid leaving curtains closed during the day and use automatic timer switches to turn lights on when it gets dark. • Consider fitting a burglar alarm - make sure it is installed properly by a reputable firm and is working. Also remember to set it before you leave home. • A thorny hedge along the boundary of your property may put thieves off, as may a gravel path, as it’s noisy to walk on. • Always close any gates and secure with a lock. • Trim back any hedges or plants that a burglar could hide behind.
We urge residents to be a good neighbour and to contact the police if you see anyone acting suspiciously in your area. Call 101 for a non-emergency, and 999 in an emergency situation.
Also, consider becoming part of a local Neighbourhood Watch scheme. Your local Safer Neighbourhood policing team will be able to offer advice on crime prevention, and will also have the details of any local Neighbourhood Watch contacts. To contact your team call 101, or visit the website: www.derbyshire.police.uk

Gary’s Grumbles This month I had to correct Gary’s spelling as he was really struggling with ‘anabolic’, he spelt it with reference to the male anatomy, which we obviously can’t print as it may upset some readers and wind up with loads of complaints…..again.….fancy him getting that wrong!! ;-) …..and the broadband saga continues too #middleclassproblems Well we seem to be doing well in the Olympics again, currently (were) second to the USA in the medal table. Good as that it is though the highlight has to be Mr Bolt giving it the big one in the 100m final with a cheeky sideways glance to his competitors as he had the race won. I’m not sure if we’d have won as many if the cheating pesky ruskies hadn’t been banned but we’ll never know, I have a sneaking suspicion that there’s a lot more doping going on outside of Russia, but it seemed to be an easy option to take. It’s not new though this doping scandal stuff, the ancient Greeks in the original games used to use anything they thought might improve their performance including eating magic mushrooms and sheep’s testicles. The testicles were rich in testosterone and the fore runner of anabolic steroids. Maybe the rowers who were complaining about dead and foreign bodies in the water should have tried a few mushrooms, they’d have been out of it and wouldn’t have noticed the stench and floaty things. The other talking point was the colour of the water in the diving pool, full of algae and turning from blue to green, apparently the wrong chemicals were used, that’s in the pool by the way and not by the cyclists. My internet saga goes on and on, after a number of calls to BT about their brilliant BT Infantile offering (not so much broadband as very narrowband) I managed to get agreement that they weren’t providing the advertised service and that I could be let out of my contract without
penalty, ten minutes later I got an email saying that I owed them over £300 quid for the rest of the contract. I rung again, only to be told that I wouldn’t have to pay and that the email was a standard reply. Two more emails and a letter later stating that I would be charged and yes I’ve had the 300 and odd quid taken from my account. I will have to speak to them again. Our new sky broadband seems to a little better, I’d had to ring them with a technical difficulty which again proved the ‘great call centre coincidence theory’. I took the option of pressing button two which should have taken me to technical support where I had to answer the delicate Scottish recorded voice with the following, the date that my Mother lost her virginity, the twenty eight digit number that I used twelve years ago to first get sky and the fourth, second and ninth letter of my best friend’s first pet. I do though prefer that recorded voice to the one at Virgin who sound like she’s chewing gravel after chain smoking for three and a half hours, but I digress, I was cut off three times after pressing button two so tried the ‘I want to buy broadband option and guess what? I got straight through. That proves my coincidence theory correct if you ring these places up, you’ll be held in a queue and told how utterly important your call is to them and have to wait forever or get cut off. If on the other hand you press the ‘I want to buy summat off you button’ then you’ll be surprised at the speed at which a human will answer you. I got the question about my Mum wrong by the way.
If on the off chance, you would like Gary to write about something in particular, feel free to contact Emily on info@voicemagazines.co.uk or 01773 604 178 / 07891 639 638 The views expressed in the column above are those of the author only and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of Amber Valley Media
