Editor’s Message This month I would like to talk about our fabulous readers. I have had such amazing messages, feedback and comments just lately that I’d like to say thank you and keep them coming! ;-) In all seriousness, I am so grateful that many of you read the mags and have now taken it into your homes as a part of the furniture. Positive or negative feedback, whichever way it comes, I will take it and I thank you for your continued support. Competition news: We received feedback from Margery and Terry, the winners of the Buddy Holly Story tickets: “We would just like to say thank you once again for the tickets. We have been to see the show tonight and it was absolutely brilliant. The seats were also very good. Regards Margery & Terry.” It is real, we do give the tickets away and you do have to be in it to win it! The same stands with the last few days to enter the draw for the NEC tickets this year. We have run this competition a few years in a row and it is a brilliant day out, busy but brilliant! So dig out last months mag (or look online) and send in your entries now. With that in mind, we are offering something a little different as a competition this month. Sandra at Designed by Me is offering a selection of personalised gifts that are made just for you. It would make a fantastic gift… or just keep it all for you. I must say, having used Sandra myself and seen first-hand the work that she has done for others, you would be mad not to enter!! Don’t forget, the next edition is the Christmas one which will be delivered to you part way through November… flipping ‘eck, how did that happen. See you in November!

Cooper’s Corner Follow Barry on Twitter @bazdjcooper Nottingham Forest writer at the Nottingham Post Some have said October is when the football season really starts to take shape but it is the transfer activity of one of our local clubs still hanging over the start of the season that is the subject of our Barry’s focus this month. Perhaps more one for the Forest fans this month but the angst around selling promising young players is an issue that affects most clubs at some stage.

There comes a time in the history of a football club when sometimes players have to leave. It’s the nature of the business. We all know it and, while it can sometimes be difficult to accept, we have to acknowledge it and move on. When news emerged just before the end of the transfer window that Nottingham Forest had sold Academy graduate Oliver Burke to Red Bull Leipzig for £13m, the Reds supporter base descended into anarchy. And even now, a few weeks on, fury remains about the manner in which he was sold and the structure of the deal. There are a few points to consider when we delve deeper into why Fawaz Al Hasawi took the unpopular decision to allow the 19-year-old winger to depart for Germany. Among all the emotions of selling a player with the raw talent that Burke possesses, there is one particular factor that resonates more than any other. It’s the way that sales of top players at the club are handled again and again. Jamaal Lascelles and Karl Darlow were both sold behind the back of manager Stuart Pearce in 2014. Granted, the business that Al Hasawi conducted thereafter to sign Britt Assombalonga and Michail Antonio was superb. But it was the manner of how Pearce was undermined that was a huge source of concern and it would appear that similar has happened again. When you appoint people to do a job, you have to afford them the space and respect they deserve. And once again, when we talk about a player with genuine quality, new manager Philippe Montanier has been undermined. After being told Burke would not be sold, the Scottish international was pushed out of the door. Just 24 hours after the Frenchman and Chris Cohen both commented on Burke’s future,

8

following a convincing win against Leeds, Leipzig announced the sale. There was nothing from Forest for a period of time, and supporters were left hanging. It’s a theme of the disappointing public relations the club has sadly become accustomed to under the current regime. All the time Forest remain a Championship club, they have to sell to remain sustainable. That’s a fact of life, and will continue to be the case, but sometimes, you have to bite the bullet and keep your match-winning players that can get you promotion. Rather than sell them and replace with those who aren’t at that level. But above all else, it’s the feeling that there is no coherent plan and that there hasn’t been in four years, There is little, if any trust in the relationship between owner, chairman and supporters. It’s at an all-time low and could well beyond any state of repair which is sad to see. For a long time now, just when things start to look promising on the field, something off the field has a habit of ripping apart any good work. Fans want honesty and it really is not that difficult. I’ve written before that if fans were told that a player like Burke may have to be sold in order to keep Forest within Financial Fair Play regulations, or to balance the books all the time the club is not a Premier League outfit, then at least they would understand. But it’s the consistent false promises which annoy people and cause heated reactions. Forest are a selling club, the majority of us understand that, but there comes a time when selling a player, at 19, who has the ability to set the world alight, with only a smidgen of appearances behind him is just not good business. This is most certainly one of those occasions.

Rambles with Rafa Guess who’s back! After a couple of trial runs in the previous weeks Rafa is back firing on all cylinders with this fantastic full blooded ramble. He had a thorough debrief with Tilly, who will be joining us again in the future for some tandem rambles. This is a cracking walk for those who really like to stretch their legs and yet again we thank David from JH legal for his sterling contributions! For those that fancy it there is a pit stop a few miles in for a much needed toilet stop and tea break at the clumber park visitors centre.

9 mile circular walk through Clumber Park

A great, varied walk for you and your dog! Although fairly long, this walk is pretty flat and should take around 4 hours to complete without stops. Although mostly on paths, trails and roads there is a range of terrain, with some muddy, uneven sections so make sure you wear appropriate footwear. There are a few roads, so as always, please take plenty of care.

Gardener’s Calendar ~ October 2016 As soon as the first frost has blackened foliage or killed tuberous stems, you should lift dahlia tubers, gladioli corms and begonias. Remove all dead foliage and trim back tiny roots. Special care needs to be taken to prise dahlias out of the soil so their tubers don’t get damaged. They need to be allowed to dry out before being stored in a frost free but cool place over winter. If you want winter colour, small conifers and winter pansies are a good combination. The RHS has recommended some particularly good strong performers under the Winning Formula pansies banner and they’re widely available. When you clear out your pots, don’t discard the compost. It can be used as mulch for borders.

TOp Tip!

If you’ve a glut of tomatoes, dry them out by roasting them slowly over a day in a cool oven. This removes excess moisture and they can be frozen for use during the winter.

Editor’s Choice Walvins Timber

Episode 9654 of my garden! Having had Paul Burrell Joinery / Sandhills Joinery over to do the steps a few months ago, I wanted to get them back and complete that whole section (which they have now done and they were as fantastic as ever). Easy I thought, I shall go back to a really well known wholesale place and order more of the same sleepers… or so I thought! Long story short and them not calling me back despite chasing them over a several week period, Ross at Walvins joined us as an advertiser and I thought I’d ask the question! He got his supplier to deliver a sample within 24hours, I checked it matched (roughly…it is wood, nothing matches exactly!) ordered and voila, delivered to my home with no fuss in super quick time. Fantastic local service, why shop anywhere else!

Gary’s Grumbles Gary’s been to the footy and as you can imagine it was a joyful experience which he is only too willing to share. I have a little sympathy for Gary here. Imagine having to put up with someone moaning! ;-) If you like Gary’s columns then his book is bound to be worth a read, or if there is someone in your household who always has a read then it will make a fab Xmas pressie - and it helps raise money for a good cause. The footy has started and I’ve invested in season tickets for me and my lad James at Hillsborough. I bought them in February and managed to get two seats bang on the halfway line in the South stand, just about perfect. Foolishly I’d booked a holiday before the fixtures came out and ended up missing the first match of the season, which as luck would have it was a home game against Aston Villa, meaning we’d miss one of the biggest games of the year. I ended up lending the tickets to my mate Phil, who reported back that it was a brilliant view but I’d be sat next to a rather large chap. I thought no more of it until I turned up for the next match to be confronted by a bloke slightly wider than Jabba the Hutt. It turned out he had two seats for himself but it still meant that I was to endure a full season of excess flesh invading my seat and space. The seats are small and cramped anyway and there was no way I could get myself comfortable. Phil’s description of the large chap just didn’t do him justice, he was gi-normus. We were crap, lost 2-0 to dirty Leeds and James who’d been to a ‘wakeover’ the night before at his mate’s house was tired, mardy and in a foul mood. Add it all up and I wasn’t a happy bunny, I know deep in my heart that it wasn’t Jabba’s fault that he’d near on buried me and caused me to contort my body into the shape of a bent hair grip. What was his fault though was his running commentary on the match, one of those fans we love to hate, from his shape I surmised that he’d not been much

of a sportsman in his youth but this didn’t stop his punditry, giving his opinion to all around, stop fannying abart, gerritforrard, rubbish full back and the classic gerrintehim. What a prat. Bless him, he tried to make conversation but I wasn’t having it and he completely ignored my repeated prods and groans so all in all not a good relationship. The only good news was that he left early, a full ten minutes before full time. As soon as he’d gone I got a tap on the shoulder and was told that if I managed five matches in my seat then I’d break a twenty season record. The ticket office were very understanding when I asked to change seats. They’ll not be on the halfway line though but I’d actually rather watch the match from a worse position knowing that I’ll be able to breathe. I’ve decided to put my four and a bit years’ worth of grumbles into book format in time for the upcoming festive period, it will also include some columns I did for the Alfreton town FC program a couple of seasons ago. The perfect present for the grumpy one in your life. I’ll try and price it around the £5/6 mark and will be donating a £1 to a well-known cancer charity that has a Scottish sounding name (not allowed to say who they are). I’ll need to know what size print run to do so if you are interested please email me at garypeacock@hotmail.co.uk with the word ‘yes’ in the subject line. There’s obviously no obligation to buy one but as I said I just need an idea of numbers.

If on the off chance, you would like Gary to write about something in particular, feel free to contact Emily on info@voicemagazines.co.uk or 01773 604 178 / 07891 639 638 The views expressed in the column above are those of the author only and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of Amber Valley Media
