Editor’s Message “So here it is Merry Christmas...” is everyone having fun!? Maybe we are a bit early for the festivities but seeing as all the shops started playing all the tunes and laying out all the giant boxes of mini cheddars, who am I to argue!? Let’s talk competitions... I hope all the winners of the NEC Christmas gift fair had a wonderful time? I know I did! Yet again I simultaneously managed to come home several pounds heavier in weight and lighter in the pocket! I have had some lovely emails all year regarding our competitions and we are working hard to make sure that this continues into next year. On that note, congratulations to Mrs Griffith of Newton for winning the Printed by Me competition. I’m sure that whatever you get printed, it’ll be great and you know where we are if you feel like sending in a picture of the end results! We are looking to expand our circulation next year, so I’m looking for a few new distributors in the Tibshelf, Westhouses and neighbouring areas. If you are able to travel and commit to distributing the magazines once a month in a 1 week turnaround, I’d love to hear from you. I could also do with a few people on the reserve list for holiday cover... so please get in contact if this is something that you would be interested in. I’ll talk resolutions in the January edition; this year has been a whirlwind with plenty going on and in some ways, I will be very sad to see the back of it. However, onwards and upwards... let’s see what you’ve got 2017! Wishing you all a fabulous Christmas.

Book Review
This time of year we seem to be surrounded by masses of Things to Do Before Christmas and when we do get time to relax there’s reams of festive telly and blockbuster films all vying for our attention. So maybe it’s a good time to head for the simpler pleasures of a good book – and in keeping with dark nights and warm fires – you could try settling down with a really good ghost story or Christmas inspired murder tale. There’s a few collections about. There’s something about a ghost story which lends itself to the short story where you can keep the tension high, although authors like Michelle Paver and Peter Straub also have excellent recent full length chillers. Michelle Paver’s Thin Air takes us to a climb in the Himalayas where there is more waiting than clouds and snow and ice. Peter Straub’s Ghost Story is set in a house where ghost stories are being told; except they don’t stop when the speaker does. Susan Hill, best known for the Woman in Black, has four short stories out in The Travelling Bag and other Ghostly Stories which are well worth a quiet night on your own and Sherlock’s Mark Gatiss chooses and introduces a new publication of EF Benson’s Ghost Stories in which evil stalks in some pretty gruesome ways. The Haunting of Hill House, by Shirley Jackson is not a new book but it is a cracker and has been described by Stephen King as “as nearly perfect a haunted house tale as I have ever read.” And for fans of the late PD James there’s a new collection of Christmasthemed murder stories, The Mistletoe Murder and Other Stories. Don’t forget to turn out the lights before you go to bed…

Rain is very loving & sensitive. He enjoys being around older children and likes to play with other dogs. Rain would suit a quiet home with someone who has lots of time for snuggles and walks.
Fonzie is looking for a comfy sofa to snooze on. He is suitable for a child and pet free environment and enjoys a quiet life. Fonzie has been in kennels a year and would love to have a new home before the start of 2017, can you offer this lovable lazy Lurcher space on the sofa?
Remember dogs aren’t just for Christmas…
Anyone considering a dog any time of the year should consider adopting a rescue dog. Come and talk to us about what type of dog would be suitable, there are hundreds of dogs available across the organisation that are desperately searching for their forever home. Save a dog’s Christmas in kennels and ADOPT!

Rambles with Rafa This month we are back at Homesford Tea Rooms, who have been advertising for a while now. It’s the perfect place to start a walk from and even better for a bite to eat or drink afterwards! (turn to page X for a voucher). We used this walk as an early test of Rafa’s new leg as it is fairly short walk but we will be following up next month with another walk from Homesford Tea Rooms, so, if like us, you love to make a full day of it why not combine this walk with next month’s walk or our earlier Homesford walk from August. A big thanks again to David from JH legal for these fab walks, he loves to hear the positive feedback we get so keep it coming!
3 mile circular walk from Homesford Tea Rooms, on the A6 near Whatstandwell A nice short but fun packed walk for you and your dog! There are some uphill sections on this walk so should it take around 1½ hours to complete. There is a range of terrain, which can be muddy and uneven, especially as we head into winter. There are also a few sections of road, so take plenty of care and make sure you wear appropriate footwear.

Standing, facing the road, with your back to the tea rooms turn left and continue along the main road. After a short distance turn left, pass by a metal gate to continue downhill along a tarmac lane and signposted footpath. At the bottom of the hill follow the lane around to the left and pass underneath a railway bridge. Immediately after the bridge keep to the right and follow a footpath to climb some steps and cross over a river bridge. Immediately after the river bridge turn left to follow the footpath and continue until reaching a T junction of paths. Take the first right, heading uphill along the footpath signposted for ‘Holloway’. After a very short distance turn left along a footpath taking you initially up a short sharp incline, then past a signpost reading ‘nature reserve’ and then passing over the canal. Continue along this path passing through woodland for quite some distance and then eventually pass by a Number ‘5’ marker post on your right. Continue straight ahead until reaching a clearing in the trees. Follow the footpath twisting and winding through the clearing and then pass a stone bench seat on your right just before passing back into some trees. After passing back into the trees, ignore the first path on your right and then at a fork in the path take the right split heading gently uphill. Continue straight ahead for some distance and then pass a number ‘9’ marker post on your left. Continue straight ahead until passing through a wooden gate. Now continue straight ahead with a stone wall on your right. After some distance pass through a tall metal swing gate and now continue with a fence on both sides. Continue until reaching another tall metal swing gate. Pass through the gate and after a very short distance at a T junction of paths turn right. Continue along the path and then after a short distance pass over a stone stile. Immediately after the stile continue along a well laid lane to cross an open field. At
the far side of the field pass through two gaps in a stone wall and onto a road. Turn right along the road heading uphill and then after a short distance take the first road on the right heading downhill signposted for ‘Whatstandwell’. 9. Continue downhill until the road bends around to the left .At this point, and immediately after passing ‘Bracken Cottage’ on the right turn right along a signposted footpath. Continue with a hedge on your right and a fence on your left. After a short distance pass through a gap in a wall and then turn left to pass through a tall metal swing gate into a field. 10. Continue downhill with a stone wall on your left and then pass a cottage on your left. Continue to the bottom of the field and pass through a tall metal swing gate and onto a T junction of footpaths. Turn right along a footpath signposted for ‘Codnor’. 11. After a short distance turn left onto a footpath signposted for ‘Homesford’. Continue along this path crossing over a river bridge and then underneath a railway bridge. Follow the tarmac lane back to the main road and then turn right along the road back to the tea rooms.

Cooper’s Corner Follow Barry on Twitter @bazdjcooper Nottingham Forest writer at the Nottingham Post Our Barry gets to have his say on an issue that has been burning a hole in his figurative opinion pocket for a few weeks now; the fall of Sam Allardyce. There were some raised eyebrows when Allardyce was appointed and not just over his management style, but few expected the chickens to come home to roost quite so soon. Where does it leave us? With Gareth Southgate? Who seems like someone who categorises his sock drawer. Maybe there was a reason the FA were drawn to the bad boy.
The last few weeks haven’t painted English football in a very good light at all. The revelations in the Daily Telegraph about England boss Sam Allardyce have rocked the football world. Allardyce, a former Notts County manager, had spent the majority of his football career longing for the Three Lions job, but had been overlooked on two previous occasions. But following the alarmingly poor performance by Roy Hodgson and his England side at Euro 2016, the exSwitzerland boss left his role. In charge for just 67 days, Allardyce’s greed and desperation for more money proved to be his downfall. Why would you even entertain going to a meeting to discuss other business opportunities when you have the privilege of the biggest job in world football, and earn in excess of £3 million a year. It beggars belief. But Allardyce’s attitude and his greed is systematic of the English game. What you have is never enough and the quest for more is there in so many. Football is a beautiful thing, but’s is also a dark, murky and at times, horrible thing. As proved by the investigation carried out by The Daily Telegraph. You can debate the merits of whether or not the undercover sting should have taken place all day long, but if that’s what it takes to catch out people who should be whiter than white, then that’s what we have to do.
34
The likes of Allardyce, Barnsley’s Tommy Wright (sacked for taking a £5,000 bung) and those who are yet to be named in the corruption story deserve to be named and shamed, and arguably should never be allowed to work in football again. Bans of the highest calibre are the only way to rid the game of this level of deceit and corruption. And English football may chastise FIFA and other governing bodies for the way they conduct their business, but it feels like we should get our own house in order before bringing down others. I get the sense that this isn’t the last of the revelations, and things will probably get worse before they get better. We have to clean up the English game and rid it of those who ultimately exploit the supporters, because it is they who are unwittingly paying for the levels of corruption that we are reading about in the national media. I sincerely hope that as Sam Allardyce sits in his ‘Big Sam Villa’ on Spain’s Costa Brava, he realises the magnitude of his naivety, stupidity and ultimately greed. This is a chance that he’s thrown away and he can have nobody else to blame but himself.

This is probably not anyone’s favourite time in the garden, but there are a few things to keep you busy on a nice bright day. Prune acers, birches and vines before the turn of the year to avoid bleeding. The sap rises very early with these plants and while bleeding seldom kills, it can weaken them. Acers do not need too much pruning, but it’s worth knowing that if they are pot grown their roots may be vulnerable to frost so wrap the pots in bubble wrap or similar. You can plant tulips up till Christmas if the ground is not frozen and hardy cyclamen can also go in the ground up till Spring. Make sure the cyclamen are the hardy variety (not the more showy larger indoor blooms) Cyclamen tubers prefer not to be planted too deep, but like partial shade rather than full sun. Christmas poinsettias and indoor hyacinths can both be recycled – they don’t need to go on the compost heap after they’ve flowered. With hyacinths you can put them in a sheltered spot in the garden once they have finished flowering, wait for the leaves to die down then lift and store in a cool place till next year. Poinsettias can be pruned back to about 10cms in April or May and allowed to grow on then about next November restrict the amount of light they get to 12 hours a day. This is what brings the Top Tip! lovely colour on. But don’t let Gardeners need friends like frogs and toads them get too cold. Anything below about 13 degrees and hedgehogs to keep down the slugs. A will probably finish pile of old logs and branches in a corner them off. of the garden will provide a habitat. If you want to give hedgehogs some food, cat or dogfood is a good idea – not bread and milk.

Gary’s Grumbles Gary is showing and feeling his age this month! His ‘awe’ at the modern mobile phone awards him many a wry smile from the under 40’s and knowing nods from the over 40’s. Forget the North/South divide, mobile phones highlight a bigger generational gap in today’s society. The most shocking bit was two positive sentences dedicated to Christmas…that’s a record ;-) Don’t take my word for it though, check out his book for sale -----> Onwards and upwards and welcome to Christmas 2016 and the love and bonhomie that comes with it. I was asked to be all Christmassy and kind so I hope that’s sufficient. Don’t know why but I got into a conversation about school dinners and puddings in particular, if you’re old enough to remember sago (frogspawn), semolina and rice pud then it’s likely that you’re getting on in years. They were truly awful and I’m pretty sure that if you put them in front of today’s generation you’d be accused of child abuse or neglect, can you imagine. Then there was the custard that didn’t move, the jelly with no taste and a particular favourite of mine, tapioca. What I do remember specifically about semolina and rice pudding was the conundrum of the spoonful of jam. This in fact was an admission that the food was horrid and tasteless and could only be made edible with the addition of a spoonful of jam launched into the middle of the dish. The technique was to find the perfect blending ratio for the jam, if you mixed it too much then the taste was lost and wasted, too little and you had a quick fix but finished up with a lot of naked semolina without a hint of the lovely strawberry stuff, there had to be a happy medium and every kid found their own, I wonder if there’s a life lesson in the Jam conundrum? Spam fritters or macaroni anyone?
At the time of me eating the above rubbish I was struggling with log tables and slide rules, if someone had told me back then that in forty years’ time I’d be able to use a device that looked like the Star Trek phaser, or was it the communicator? to help me do my homework and that it would be called a mobile phone I would have booked them in to the nearest loony bin, but it’s happened. A couple of days ago I had a go at my son for being on his phone when he should have been doing homework. He showed me the phone and he was looking something up to do with a project. It’s beyond belief when you think about it, a phone that you carry around. Not all clever stuff though is it? Samsung have had to recall millions of the pesky things because the batteries are spontaneously combusting, which is just a tad dangerous for those who sleep with the things glued to their hands, shame it’s not all of them really not just the Samsung model, where would we be then? Maybe the people who can add up and use a logarithm book will rule the world once again. So have as good a Christmas as you can and I look forward to discharging more rubbish and drivel in 2017.
If on the off chance, you would like Gary to write about something in particular, feel free to contact Emily on info@voicemagazines.co.uk or 01773 604 178 / 07891 639 638 The views expressed in the column above are those of the author only and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of Amber Valley Media
