Editor’s Message It’s the second edition of the year already and we have a lot of changes happening this year. The two big headlines for our readers are: a/ that we have more of them, as we are now going to 15,000 homes, and b/ after very long and grumbly 5 years, Gary is leaving us. Obviously I was sad that he is going but he just seems to have lost his mojo a bit. Every month I was receiving fewer and fewer complaints about his article… something just wasn’t right with that picture! So hold onto this copy for posterity as this is the last time you’ll see him grumble in print! I would like to say how extremely grateful I am to him for his contribution over the years and it’ll not be the same but we will try and soldier on!

Don’t forget to mention the ‘Voice’ when you use any of the companies in this magazine

With that in mind, if anybody else wants to have a crack at contributing… it doesn’t have to be monthly or even a grumble, it can be allsorts. So if you are keen, drop me an email with either your idea or your contribution! I’d like to give a bit of a shout out to my friend Terry at the Alfreton Ramblers Club. Before Christmas he popped in and was asking what adrenaline stuff I was planning for this year after my snowboarding, plane flying etc in 2016. We both said that we really wanted to do the mahoosive zip wire in Wales and the race was on to see between us, who did it first. Well game on Terry as the outlaws bought us it as a Christmas present… so all we need to do is book it! Race you down to the bottom Terry ;-) Whilst I’m shouting out, David at JH Legal is doing the #walk1000miles challenge. It is a great challenge and you should get on board if you aren’t already! He is actually raising money for the John Eastwood Hospice and has set up a Just Giving webpage, in remembrance of his father. The charity is close to his heart and they did such a fantastic job with palliative care, he feels like they are the unsung heroes that need help. See the walking page for how to donate and please dig deep! He brings these walks to us month in month out and I will be updating you on how he gets on. So far he has managed to walk 46 miles in the first 2 weeks of Jan but whilst planning the latest Rafa’s Ramble, he twisted his ankle going over a stile after assisting with a situation with a dog and his owner. I kid you not! So look out for this symbol    to see how he is getting on… we have named it a ‘Duddyometer’! Happy Reading,

Book Review

What better than a terrific compelling psychological thriller to warm you through the chilly days of midwinter. Graeme Macrae Burnet’s His Bloody Project takes us to a remote crofting community in the Scottish Highlands in the 1860s where a 17-year-old lad is arrested for a gruesome triple murder. From the start it’s obvious that Roderick Macrae committed the crimes; he even admits it. But can he escape the hangman’s noose through a claim of insanity? The facts seem clear. At the centre of the book is an account written by the boy; but justice, sanity and truth are slippery ideas. If someone commits murders which seem like an act of madness and shows no remorse, does that make the murderer mad? If not, what does it make them? In addition there’s the history of the time. This was around the period of the clearances when culture, wealth and church conspired to keep the poor in their place and lives depended on the arbitrary whim of those with power. The story draws us deep into this harsh world of the tenant farmer. It’s riveting stuff, written in a very different narrative style, and manages to be intelligent and unsettling. And, in a sidelong glance at today, it throws a shaft of light on the place and truth of “the expert”. His Bloody Project was shortlisted for the 2016 Man Booker Prize. You can understand why.

Man dy ’s Travel Page Hi I’m Mandy your Personal Travel Counsellor. I’m often asked, so where is popular this year then? So far this year my answer has to be Las Vegas. I really want to go, but so far haven’t got there. I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but is that just because they don’t know what it has to offer. It’s the only place in the world where you can gamble in Ancient Egypt, float along the canals of Venice, and party in Ancient Rome all in one night, the glittering, hedonistic extravaganza that is Las Vegas never wanes in popularity: Bright, brash and lavish, there is no reason to holiday in Las Vegas other than the pursuit of pleasure and entertainment, because that is why this city in the Nevada desert exists. Travel to Las Vegas to discover a city of fun and fantasy, filled with mega-resort casinos. Vegas has been dubbed the entertainment capital of the world, and its ‘wow factor’ continues to grow along with its building budgets. No longer is a holiday in Las Vegas just for gamblers though. The casinos flourish, of course, but the city is now a well-rounded destination which offers everything from wildlife viewing to theme park thrills, from world class shows to spectacular night clubs. This is truly a destination for everyone and anyone who is just out to have fun. Even if one never enters a casino, the shopping, the lavish resorts, the restaurants, the theme parks, and the famous nightlife, will keep the excitement at boiling level for the duration of a holiday in Las Vegas. What to see in Las Vegas • Watch the spectacular fountain show outside the iconic Bellagio Hotel and Casino. • Admire the famous neon lights at the Fremont Street Experience in downtown Vegas. • Enjoy the many swimming pools of Mandalay Bay Resort, voted the best in the city. • Get a taste of Venice at Venetian Hotel, and a taste of Egypt at The Luxor. What to do in Las Vegas • Try your hand at driving massive bulldozers and excavators at Dig This. • Get your adrenalin fix on one of the many roller coasters that compete in the city. • Gamble away the night in the famous MGM Grand. • Treat the kids to thrills and spills at Adventuredome. I am available 7 days a week to take your enquiries and 24/7 whilst you are away in the event of emergency. For all your travel needs please call me on 01773 318540 / 07939 587867 or email mandy.oldknow@travelcounsellors.com or find me on Facebook Mandy Oldknow Travel Counsellor Alfreton

jh Legal

JH Legal is a legal company specialising in will writing, probate and powers of attorney. It provides an ethical and essential service ensuring that all individuals have access to an affordable representation of their wishes after they are gone. ‘The Voice’ is a community magazine covering 15,000 customers. It provides cost effective news, interviews with local companies, and advertising.

As each of these companies continue to expand both have the need for a conscientious individual who has the flexibility to work across these two businesses. The role is shared between the 2 companies, working out of the same location, offering the right candidate a varied and dynamic working environment. Both roles require an individual with good ‘customer care’ skills, a good telephone manner and computer literacy but each role is specific to the work undertaken. The right candidate will possess the drive and determination to adapt to this active environment. Attributes such as close attention to detail, good communication skills, and a professional approach are valued. IT skills need to include the Microsoft Office suite, the ability to audio type instructions via a digital Dictaphone system and user knowledge of social media such as Facebook would be an advantage, as is a clean driving license. These small companies offer an exciting opportunity within a close knit team, with a pleasant working environment.

Please apply in writing to: michelle@jhlegal.co.uk

Stating why you should be considered, enclosing a CV, before the closing date 1st March.

Rambles with Rafa This month we are back up to full tilt with a longer walk that begins a Vicar Waters Country Park and takes us into the edge of Sherwood Forest. David Hallam of JH Legal continues to surpass himself with another cracking walk that brings together all of our favourites: awesome views, picnic stops, lakes and forests, some of which Rafa is particularly fond of. There is even the Rumbles cafe right by the carpark but check the opening times as I wouldn’t want you to be disappointed. Don’t forget David is doing the 1000 mile challenge (#walk1000 miles) to raise money for John Eastwood Hospice, so if you want to show your appreciation for all the walks he has given us please visit his just giving page: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/David-Hallam6

7 mile circular walk from Vicar Waters Country Park, near Clipstone A longer walk for you and your dog, which should take around 2½-3 hours to complete. Although it’s most on paths and tracks there is a range of terrain, which can be muddy and uneven, especially during winter so make sure you wear appropriate footwear. There are also a couple of sections of road, so please take plenty of care.

From the car park head towards the lake and then turn right, along a footpath keeping the lake on your left. After some distance pass by a metal gate and then continue straight along the footpath. After some distance the footpath turns into a lane. Continue straight along the lane and pass’ Bridleways Guest House’ on your right. Shortly after, pass ‘Willow Barn’ on your left. After passing the barn turn left along a lane and signposted bridleway. After some distance and just prior to the lane narrowing into a footpath, bear left and continue along a lane going gently uphill. After a short distance turn left and cross over a stile to continue on a gentle climb along a footpath. Continue along the path for some distance until reaching a stile. Cross over the stile and then keep right staying on the main path. Continue along the main path ignoring all other paths to the left and right for some distance, and then pass by an information board and view point on your left. From this point you will begin to descend twisting and winding as you go. Continue until crossing over a stile and then, after a very short distance, at a marker post on your right, bear to the right along a footpath. Continue straight along this path and after a short distance you will begin to descend more sharply. At the bottom of the hill cross over a stile and then turn immediately left along a footpath. Continue along this footpath keeping a lake on your right. Continue until crossing over a wooden footbridge and then turn right to continue along a single track tarmac road keeping the lake on your right. Continue along the edge of the lake until reaching a car park. Staying with the edge of the lake pass through the car park and then over a small wooden footbridge. Immediately after the footbridge, ignore the path on the left and bear right staying with the edge of the lake. After a short distance at a second fork in the path, bear left along a path moving away from the lake. After a short distance follow the main path through a ‘S’ bend passing some picnic tables on your left. Continue along this path for some distance keeping a wooden fence on your left. When the fence on your left ends, turn left off the main path onto a footpath. After a short distance and a sharp descent you will cross over a road bridge. After the bridge continue along the path up a short sharp incline and continue until this path meets with another. At this point bear left and continue until this path meets with a lane. Bear left again and continue downhill to pass under a bridge. Immediately after the bridge pass by a metal gate. After, continue straight along a lane to pass by a ‘Sherwood Pines’ sign on your left and a number ‘8’ sign on your right. The lane climbs gently uphill. Upon reaching a fork in the lane bear right and now begin to climb more steeply. After a short distance you will come to a cross roads of lanes. Cross straight over and continue uphill.

After walking for some distance you will come to another crossroads of lanes. At this point turn right and continue straight ahead, passing marker post 10 and for some distance until reaching yet another crossroads of lanes. Turn right again and continue for some distance until reaching a T junction of lanes just prior to a wooden gate. Turn right and continue for some distance until the lane begins to bend around to the right. After a very short distance and at another crossroads of lanes with a number ‘6’ marker post on your right, turn left and head downhill along a lane. Continue until reaching the bottom of the hill, pass by a metal gate and pass under a bridge. After passing under the bridge and after a very short distance at a fork in the path bear right and continue uphill. A little further on, and at another fork in the path, bear left and cross over a brick built bridge. Continue straight ahead, climbing gently uphill, and ignoring all other paths to the left and right. After some distance you will pass through a metal width restrictor. Immediately after the restrictor turn left to continue along a footpath. Continue along this path for some distance, passing under a canopy of trees. After emerging from the trees follow the path around to the right. Continue to pass some telegraph poles on your right. Upon reaching a fork in the path bear right and pass immediately underneath a bridge. Eventually the path turns into a lane. Continue straight until reaching a T junction of lanes. Turn right along a signposted bridleway and after a short distance pass by ‘Bridleways Guest House’ on your left. Continue straight along this path until reaching the start /finish point and car park.

We receive no official funding, or lottery funding and are dependent on donations from the public. We run five centres in the east of England, including your nearest one in Nottinghamshire at Warsop Lane, Blidworth, NG21 0PG. We are open 1:30pm to 4:00pm every day except Wednesday.

Domino

Collie x – 8 years old Domino is not suitable to live with children and would prefer to be the only pet. Domino is not comfortable with dogs and will need to be kept on his lead when out on walks. Domino is clean in the home and can be left alone for up to 5 hours. We would prefer Collie experience for Domino. Domino needs limited exercise as he does have hip dysplasia and arthritis. This is managed with a daily pain relief medication. For more information please call the team on 01623 792886.

Neiko

1 y 4 m – Labrador cross Collie Neiko would be fine with older children who are robust and dog savvy. He is friendly with other dogs and enjoys playing however he is part Collie and likes to ‘herd’ them so careful introductions is paramount. Neiko is not fully house-trained and chews when he is left alone. Neiko loves to retrieve and be active.

Cooper’s Corner Follow Barry on Twitter @bazdjcooper Nottingham Forest writer at the Nottingham Post In the ever changing world of Nottingham Forest it is difficult to keep up with the latest goings on, let alone write an article that captures the moment but I think Barry has outdone himself again. With goodwill in short supply and the relegation zone looming Al Hasawi is running out of time to act but should he stay or should he go?

They say that when a manager has lost the support of his fans, his position becomes untenable. In most circumstances, the erosion of that relationship will end up with the manager being dismissed and ending up back on the managerial merry-go-round. So what of chairmen?

It was Brian Clough who once said that “if a chairman sacks the manager he initially appointed, he should go as well”. Nottingham Forest chairman, owner, and sole board member Fawaz Al Hasawi has sacked seven managers in five seasons at the City Ground. By Clough’s methodology, Al Hasawi should have gone on Boxing Day in 2012, when Sean O’Driscoll was dismissed with the Reds just outside the top six.

It’s fair to say that, given events on a regular and frequent basis over the last couple of years, Al Hasawi has done his level best to erode his own relationship with Reds fans. Initially, that relationship started well, with the Kuwaiti joining fans for songs and pictures – something that just wouldn’t be possible now. The Al Hasawi family were in a hugely fortunate position when they bought the club nearly five years ago. Seen as something of a saviour by some, they enjoyed huge goodwill and some giddy supporters lapped it up. For all his apparent heart, interest and desire to succeed, I would suggest most of it has been misplaced – he even admitting the American consortium were “more professional” in a recent interview.

If success was that desperate, why was a structure not put in place to make it happen and why are we now rushing around to try and put it together inside a few days? Why has one person’s ego been allowed to tarnish one of the most famous, respected and proudest clubs in world football? Could you realistically argue that Al Hasawi’s position is nothing other than untenable? No, you couldn’t.

30

Following the recent collapse of John Jay Moores’ takeover, Al Hasawi appears set to step back in and run the club. He plans to introduce the staff he’s failed to have on a consistent basis for four years, but why should we be convinced a leopard is finally going to change his spots and allow these people to run it?

It feels all too desperate, trying to find a manager and a bunch of administration staff off the cuff, with just a couple of weeks left on what was a vital transfer window. The saying trying to close the stable door after the horse has bolted springs to mind.

It’s been said before, but there is goodwill out there from those who have been involved in the club before, and who care about it – they want to help. At Alan Hardy’s inaugural press conference, he made it clear he didn’t have the knowledge to run the football side of Notts County, and explained he would surround himself with people who did. Hardy will have an ego, but at least it will allow him to accept and acknowledge his shortcomings for the benefit of himself and the club. Al Hasawi, on the other hand, surrounds himself with people that know little, if anything, about football, let alone Nottingham Forest. His words for the last four years have been hollow, empty and without substance. Just because he’s backed into a corner, I don’t believe he will come out fighting for the benefit of the club and therefore must do everything in his power to sell Forest. If this club is to have a future, and one that stops it hurtling backwards towards oblivion, Al Hasawi must accept that he’s failed and relinquish his hold over the club. Until that happens, it’s hard to see how Forest can ever recover from the damage it has sustained.

If you want to prune or re-shape apple or pear trees, do it now. The same goes for vines which will bleed if left any later. Summerflowering clematis also need to be trimmed now, as they are on the move. Cut clematis to just above a bud about a foot from the ground. Leave the pruning of plum and cherry trees until later in the year. We can get great extremes of temperature this time of year, especially with the confused climate, so watch out for sudden frosts or snow after mild spells which will have encouraged growth spurts. Very cold weather can shrivel blossom on fruit bushes and cordons, and damage or destroy this year’s crop; so if the bushes aren’t too big and buds and blossom have started, cover with horticultural fleece if severe frost is forecast – similarly put protection over cordons grown against walls. And remember that cold air sinks downward, so if it looks like snow or frost and you have tender new growth on bulbs and other plants at ground level, protect with a stand of bricks covered with plastic or glass. Overwintered pot grown fuchsias, can be pruned back to two buds and left in a warm light spot to stimulate growth.

Top Tip!

If you’re adding woody pruning cuttings to your compost, shred or chop them very small as they take a long time to rot down.

Reader Recommends

This month I received a lovely phone call from Mrs Cadman of Shirland who told me about the fantastic service she had recently received from Derbyshire Rubber Roofing. Mrs Cadman’s property had sustained significant damage following storm Angus in November and that her “insurance would only cover part of the job”. She told me that Rob from DRR was “fantastic” and he had done “a brilliant job, at a great price and with a 20 year guarantee”. She continued saying that “I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone who is in need of some roofing work”.

Gary’s Grumbles With more of a fizzle than a bang, Gary is off! This is his last column after several years of grumbling. I’d like to say that it’s been emotional but only when I had to deal with the fall out of the complaints! In all seriousness, cheers Gary, it’s been a blast! And thanks for leaving me with one last ‘censor’ for old times’ sake as he knows full well that I can’t print minor’s names without parental permission, what a parting gift ;-) So, with this information in mind, if anyone wants to contribute with any other articles/ features, then give me a shout….

Spring is on the way, which is always good news, what isn’t is the BBC’s pathetic attempt at Saturday evening tele programmes. They’ve had their flagship ‘The Voice’ nicked off them by ITV and had to come up with a replacement, so with some out of the box thinking they’ve come up with a brilliant new show. Let it bloody shine, a programme that trawls the country for some wannabe singers that audition in front of a celebrity panel in the hope of joining a five piece boyband. Is it just me or has it all been done before? Can you imagine the conversation? Some very high paid executive instructs a reasonably high paid thought consultant to come up with something that’s been done before. It’s not hard is it? It must be one of the easiest jobs in the world. It’s awful, it’s lazy and its cheating and we pay our licence fee for this banal rubbish. On reflection it’s probably not the easiest job in the world, that accolade belongs to Finn Parkin’s paper round. I see him most mornings when I’m walking the dogs, his dad drops him off at the shop and he then scooters down the hill, round the corner and back home to his mam, who is no doubt waiting for him with a bit of toast, tea and his phone on charge. Only kidding Finn, I was

a paper boy for five years and know that it’s a pain in the bum getting up on cold winter mornings. Remember the name, because hopefully he’ll be on match of the day in a few years and I might be delivering the papers to his mansion just to supplement my pension. Talking of the paper shop I’ve just been in to be confronted by a headline in the Sun on Sunday blurting out that a man is four month’s pregnant, it turns out of course that he was born a woman so it’s a bit of a false headline methinks, it takes all this a bit far doesn’t it, which reminds me I’ve got to complete a computer based training module at work, with the title, ‘Embracing gay, lesbian and transgender colleagues in the workplace’. I kid you not. I’m actually running out of things to moan about, I’ve covered a lot of things over the last few years, but as you can probably see from the above I’ve been struggling to come up with anything new or controversial. So this is my last column, I’ve resigned. Thanks to Emily for letting me spout off about stuff and thank you to the people who’ve said they’d enjoyed it. To those that haven’t, get hover thi sens.

If on the off chance, you would like Gary to write about something in particular, feel free to contact Emily on info@voicemagazines.co.uk or 01773 604 178 / 07891 639 638 The views expressed in the column above are those of the author only and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of Amber Valley Media

Editors Choice Ovenblaster

Personally, I think this picture of my oven speaks for itself! I knew that professional oven cleaners would do a good job but I thought it would only be a bit better than doing it yourself. My job and the people that I am lucky enough to meet never cease to prove me wrong!

Steve at Ovenblaster

did this fantastic job just before Christmas. A couple of hours (bear in mind, we haven’t really cleaned our oven since we moved in!) and an amazing price and it was like new! I could use it virtually straight away, and he even replaced a bulb that I didn’t know was out! Just brilliant! Cheers Steve J
