Editor’s Message Not really sure what happened with the beast and beast-ette from the East... the less said the better and hopefully now we have changed over to British Summertime, there should be no more of that white fluffy stuff. I appreciate that there are a lot of people that enjoy it and can’t get enough but seriously, I don’t think the supermarkets can cope with yet another bread and milk shortage!!
Don’t forget to mention the ‘Voice’ when you use any of the companies in this magazine
Hopefully a change in the weather will give us all a chance to get out and about a bit more. There’s another cracking ramble with Rafa, more events in the Things To Do and you could even give sailing ago, check out page 16 for more details. ‘Oscar’ the foster dog has left the building L leaving space for the inbound ‘Flake’. We’re not sure what to expect with Flake so, no doubt it will be chaotic and I’m sure many of you will see me being dragged around the park at some point! Check out www.spanielaid.co.uk if you are interested in becoming a fosterer or if you are interested in re-homing a spaniel in need. Good News! Our new magazine has launched in Selston, Pinxton and Jacksdale! So we welcome more readers to our happy family of community news and fantastic advertisers. Last but definately not least! Check out my review of Glendair PERK treatments, it was fabulous and highly recommended. See you next month,

Glendair Perk Review
This month I was so lucky to get invited to Glendair for one of their ‘PERK’ treatments. I snapped their hand off; after all, it’s been ages since I’ve had any luxury treatments! I arrived to an already busy Glendair and maybe expected to wait. When you’re good, you’re busy! But after a fantastic greeting from Jade I was collected by Ruth in just 5 minutes. I was introduced to the lovely Cate who told me the treatment would only take about 10 minutes “it’s the busy persons facial”, she said. Ok, I thought (I’ve never had a half decent facial in 10 minutes!). They offer 3 treatments, lips, eyes and face and I tried them all. It is non-invasive, hands off and it really is super quick. PERK is an all-in-one cleanse with the benefit that it gently exfoliates using serums loaded with antioxidants. Check out the gunk that was sucked out and I always cleanse, tone and moisturise twice a day, even though it doesn’t look like it! (not for the squeamish but I love this stuff!!) What’s more, you also get these aftercare packages, which include any left over serum to take home with you until your next treatment! I struggle with my skin, having open pores, blemishes and an oily complexion but this is one of the best and quickest treatments I’ve ever had. I genuinely recommend it and I received lots of compliments afterwards including ‘you look like you have been on holiday’. I am also reliably informed that if you are a regular Botox user, it works fantastically along-side and can enhance the treatment. Honestly, you should get booked in!

Mandy’s Travel Page I often tell you about exotic and far flung places across the world, but this month, it is much closer to home. Liverpool, yes I know it’s not necessarily on your holiday bucket list, but when you hear why I am suggesting it, you may change your mind. From February through to the 28th October at the World Museum Liverpool you can visit an exhibition called China’s First Emperor and the Terracotta Warriors. Showcasing objects from one of the world’s greatest archaeological discoveries, this unmissable exhibition spans almost 1,000 years of Chinese history; from the conflicts and chaos of the Warring States period, to the achievements and legacy of the Qin and Han dynasties. These spectacular artefacts will shed light on the Emperor’s pursuit of immortality and show how he prepared for the afterlife, as well as help to understand more about everyday life in China more than two thousand years ago. I can offer coach trips, trips by rail or you can drive yourself. The choice is yours. Liverpool has so much to offer visitors, it’s easy to fill a few days. You can take a ‘ferry across the Mersey’ eat in award winning restaurants, drink at the Cavern Club, visit the many museums including Tate Liverpool, people watch at Albert Dock, visit the cathedral or just chill in Sefton Park. I hear they even have a football team, so you could go and see a match. Liverpool is a diverse city and not that far from home. I am available 7 days a week to take your enquiries and 24/7 whilst you are away in the event of an emergency. For all your travel needs please call me on 01773 318540 / 07939 587867 or email mandy.oldknow@travelcounsellors.com or find me on Facebook Mandy Oldknow Travel Counsellor Alfreton

Slimming World Recipe Rhubarb and Pear Crumble It’s been pointed out to me that we haven’t featured a dessert for ages, so I thought what’s seasonal – well it turns out that rhubarb makes a great ingredient for a crumble as well as gin! Who would have thought it!
Method: 1. Preheat your oven to 180°C/fan 160°C/gas 4. Place the rhubarb in a medium-size pie or glass dish. Add the pear slices and orange juice and zest, and toss together to combine. Sprinkle over the sweetener and cinnamon, then cook in the oven for 10-12 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, make the topping by placing the low-fat spread, sweetener and flour in a bowl and rubbing together with your fingertips until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. 3. Remove the fruit from the oven. Sprinkle over the topping and cook for a further 10-12 minutes, or until lightly golden. Allow to cool slightly before serving - it tastes great with a dollop of low-fat, readymade custard (1 Syn per 2 level tbsp), served warm or cold. For more information visit www.slimmingworld.co.uk
Serves: 4 Ready in: 30 minutes Syns per serving: 7
Ingredients:
• 900g rhubarb, cut into 5cm pieces • 300g pears, peeled, cored and sliced • Juice of 1 orange, plus 1 tsp finely grated zest • 6 tbsp sweetener • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
For the topping:
• 2 tbsp low-fat spread • 2 tbsp sweetener • 60g plain flour

Give sailing a go in Derbyshire this May There’s something for everyone as RYA Push The Boat Out gives you the chance to try sailing and windsurfing for free or low cost in Derbyshire this May. If you’re on the lookout for something completely different, whether you’re bored of the gym and want some outdoor health and fitness, are a bit of an adrenaline junkie or simply want a sociable new activity you can enjoy with your partner or family, pop down to your local sailing club or centre during Push The Boat Out and have a go. Gareth Brookes, RYA Regional Development Officer for the Midlands, said: “If you didn’t even know you could go sailing or windsurfing on your doorstep, now’s the time to give it a go. So many people still don’t realise it is possible to sail in the Midlands and that you don’t even need to own a boat as clubs and centres have ones to borrow or hire.” At least nine venues across Derbyshire are hosting Push The Boat Out events throughout the whole of May. All kit and safety equipment are provided so just bring a pair of old trainers you don’t mind getting wet and your sense of fun. Refreshments will be available with a host of shoreside activities and entertainment to enjoy too. Find your nearest event at www.rya.org.uk/ptbo

Rambles with Rafa The sharp eyed amongst you may notice another doggy in the pics this month. Our foster dog Oscar got in on the action this month and it’s fair to say he loved the walk. I nearly lost my voice working on his recall! This month’s walk makes use of the Maun Valley Trail which runs alongside the river Maun. So, if your furry friend likes a swim then prepare for a soggy doggy! A couple of miles into the walk the trial takes you past some fishing ponds so please make sure your dog doesn’t disturb the fishermen. After this the route diverts up a lane towards Clipstone and then around the edge of Forest Town providing some fantastic views before taking you back to the beginning along convenient lanes and byways.
6-mile circular walk from Maun Valley Park A mid-distance walk which should take you and your dog around 3 hours to complete. The walk is mostly on trails and paths but there are a few short stretches of road so please take care. Even with the improving weather there may be some uneven and muddy terrain, so please wear appropriate footwear and as always, please follow the countryside code.

Waldo
4 years 3 months - Greyhound Hi my name is Waldo, and I am looking for my forever home now my career at the racing track has come to an end. I would love a warm sofa to snuggle on, and someone who has experience with sighthounds, or even better, ex-racers like myself! I am suitable to live with dogs of a similar size and energy level to myself but cannot live with small furries. I am also not used to children and haven’t lived in a home before so would need someone who is kind and patient to show me the ropes of being a pet! Hoping for some luck and love - Waldo x
Bean
1 year 10 months - Crossbreed Hi, I’m Bean and I am very fussy and cuddly! I love to run around and zoomie. Book Review
There was a time, back in the 60s, when living simply and getting back to the land was an ideal for some people. Even now living off-grid, away from the problems of civilisation, has its allure for many frazzled city dwellers. Except it may not turn out like that. In Elmet by Fiona Mozley, Daniel and his sister live in a house built by their Daddy in a copse in the middle of rural Yorkshire. He has taken the land which he says was owed to his dead wife and brings the children up to be independent, home-schooled, and able to turn their hand to anything. They grow their own food, barter for things they need and live without technology. They know everything about animals and the countryside and they are a strong family. In many ways it sounds like an idyll. But living on the edge of society has dark edges and over time those edges creep closer and closer to their home. The little sanctuary in the woods isn’t theirs it seems and when that becomes apparent the family’s certainties start to dissolve. This story is like a Yorkshire fable, brutal and violent in places, told very simply from the perspective of a child and as an adult you often have to fill in the missing bits yourself. It’s Fiona Mozley’s first novel and it’s a haunting original book.

Mike’s Musings This month our Mike is back with another tall tale, at least I hope it’s a tall tale… otherwise I think I’ve worked out what happened to Hillary Briss from League of Gentlemen! Also I’m a little concerned Mike’s UCIP party might not actually be a joke – it’s just a little too believable in these strange times.
‘I had another interesting day last month’
I’ve had some feedback from friends and neighbours who were intrigued about my trip to Alfreton in January. You remember, it was when I nearly bought that talking dog. Well, it just so happens that I came across a most unusual butcher in Derby the other week. I can’t remember his name, but you’ll find him in Normanton where, amongst the many products on offer are brains. I’d never seen these on sale before and went in to ask a few questions. “Oh yes,” he said, “providing they are sourced from animals no older than 12 months, it is perfectly legal to sell the brains of, for example, calves, lambs and piglets. In certain societies they are very popular and regarded as a bit of a delicacy.” He went on tell me that he occasionally got stock of human brains and that, when available, these were used in some specialist dishes and generally sold out very quickly. In fact, he went on, I received a consignment this morning and that if I looked in the window, I’d see a couple of trays of fresh human brains. Intrigued, I went outside and there, in the corner, were two trays labelled as follows:Fresh Male Brains - £496/lb and Fresh female brains - £1.29/lb I wasn’t tempted to buy any but, puzzled as to why there was such a wide disparity in price, I went back inside to enquire why. “Ah,” he said, “I’m often asked that by men, but funnily enough never by any of my female
customers. It’s a simple explanation, you see, as the female brains have been used, I have to charge less!” While I give you a couple of minutes to reflect upon my visit to Derby... can I just say that I’ve a lot of support for my campaign to form a Union of Clever & Intelligent People or UCIP for short, and in particular I’ve received a number of radical manifesto proposals that will undoubtedly appeal to the masses. A nice chap called George stopped me in the street just last week and asked what steps UCIP might take to combat climate change. As de facto leader of this embryonic political organisation I replied that we recognised the issue but were still in the process of forming an official policy. Now George is just the kind of person who I would think represents the strongly held views of approximately 50% of the electorate, and as a result, I listened intently as explained his simple suggestion to greatly reduce the nation’s ‘carbon footprint.’ “Would UCIP”, he suggested, “favour the introduction of legislation that made it illegal for anyone other than a fully grown bloke to touch the thermostat control on any domestic or workplace based central heating system?” You know what, I think he may be on to a winner! What do you think?

Time to start planting outdoors again. Hardy annuals such as cornflower, nasturtiums and foxgloves can be grown from seed where they are to flower. If you want to give them a head start you might cover the planting area with fleece or plastic for a few days before sowing to warm the soil up and don’t sow if the ground is waterlogged. Create a crumbly tilth in the soil and scatter seeds for a natural look – but scatter thinly so they don’t crowd each other out. Then cover with a thin garden fleece for a few days to stop the birds getting at the seeds. You may need to thin out again later. Cut back any dead foliage of perennials to allow new growth to come through. This is a good time to cut smoke plant (cotinus) back pretty hard to encourage lots of those beautiful new leaves without stopping the frothy flowers later in summer. Plant lilies in pots, three to a 12 inch pot, about 5-6 inches deep, but watch it if you have cats that munch on the garden. All parts of a lily are poisonous to them.
Top Tip!
Forget-me-nots make a delightful spring carpet and often seem to appear in your garden without your having planted them. Once they’ve finished flowering though do heave a good proportion out. They’ll selfseed like mad and overwhelm less robust plants if left to run riot.

Cooper’s Corner Follow Barry on Twitter @bazdjcooper Nottingham Forest writer at the Nottingham Post
Is our Barry right? Has the reaction to this incident been overblown? This was shocking behaviour on all sides but I can’t help but feel that a lot of people’s reactions came more from tribal loyalties rather than genuine disgust. Or was this simply beyond the pale?
The recent events involving Jamie Carragher and a family from north Wales once again show the mob mentality that exists within the modern world.
be sacked, never to work again, while as often happens in similar situations - the father concerned has been given death threats – the world we live in…
For those that haven’t seen, the former Liverpool captain, who now works as a pundit and summariser on Sky Sports, was filmed spitting towards a car on the way home from last month’s derby between Manchester United and Liverpool at Old Trafford. Carragher’s Liverpool were beaten 2-1 by United, and after some ‘goading’ as he called it, spat towards the man driving, only to hit a 14-year-old girl sat in the passenger seat.
Why?
Now we’ve set the scene, here’s the thing. Ex-football Carragher lost the plot for a split second, in spitting at somebody, he engaged in one of the most disgusting, repugnant acts you could ever commit on another person. He was rightly suspended by Sky Sports for the remainder of the season while he has time to think over his actions, and for the television network to let the dust settle over the next few months – to let the furore calm down a little. Depending on which camp you fall into, whether it be supporting one or the other, there’s been an element of nonsense on either side, with people reacting so far over the top, it’s quite frankly ridiculous. Some have suggested Carragher should
36
He should not have taken the video in the first place, let alone while he’s driving a car with his daughter in the passenger seat, let along upload it and seek his five minutes of fame. As always is the case, these things go too far and with social media being as it is, people jump on the bandwagon and try to make a situation bigger than it should have been. Carragher, who for what it’s worth is a quite brilliant and insightful addition to Sky’s coverage, was disgusting, but he’s made a mistake (a big one), like we all do. However, he shouldn’t be castigated anymore, should be allowed back to do his job from August and the family left alone. I’m not trying to downplay the situation, and given the gravitas Carragher’s actions have had, given his profile, especially in front of youngsters, its important he’s criticised, but not vilified. Let’s move on, let bygones be bygones and worry about more important things in the world, you know, Brexit, Russia, plastics killing the world and Derby’s playoff bid…
