Editor’s Message It’s Ice Cream month, yay! Well I say ‘yay’, I like ice cream but it doesn’t like me!! However, I like what it symbolises, i.e, warm sunny days and light evenings, BBQ’s and a Trifle (see Slimming World recipe) to complement the al fresco dining!

Don’t forget to mention the ‘Voice’ when you use any of the companies in this magazine

Thank you to everyone who entered the Dogs Unleashed competition last month. As I’m sending into print, it hasn’t happened yet but it looks like it’s going to be a corking weekend. Football news, as it stands England won their first game and bigger news than that, Cooper has finally succumbed to peer pressure and written about Derby! In both cases, let’s enjoy it whilst it lasts!! The holiday season is coming up as the kids break up from school and we have lots of events that I’m sure will be of interest to you as always, but more importantly, if you haven’t booked your holiday as yet, check out our fantastic range of travel and holiday companies. Whether you are looking for a domestic break or want a tailormade holiday we have you sorted! We have a load of new local advertisers this month (too many to mention by name!) as well as all the usual fantastic information, editorials and articles so why not take the magazine out into the garden with a tipple of your choice and have a good read?! Happy Reading,

Emily x

Exciting new offers and products at Body & Sole! Heather at Body & Sole is now the proud stockist of Monu, a UK based supplier of natural beauty products and to celebrate her new relationship with them, she invited me along to enjoy one of their flagship treatments, a Non-Surgical Resurface and Peel Facial. I can understand what you are thinking but whilst the name of the treatment sounds terrifying, it is actually pure luxury! The concept behind this treatment, which is actually a course of 6 treatments (but can be taken individually), is to reduce the detrimental effects of uneven pigmentation, dull skin, ageing lines, expression lines, wrinkles, dry and dehydrated skin, oily & problematic skin, acne and acne scarring by lightening, brightening and giving your skin more radiance. My skin, whilst it isn’t terrible, has always been a problem for me. As mentioned before in previous articles, open pores, acne scars from when I was younger and oily combination type (plus a few more wrinkles and lines than I used to have!) does not make for a flawless complexion, so I always jump at the chance to try and even out my skins’ appearance. After a full consultation, Heather determined my skin type and got to work. I was given a choice of 3 beautiful aromas which complemented my mood and the skin prep began. Heather removed al my make-up (eek!) and prepped my skin, which involved cleansing with a gorgeous smelling micro exfoliant. After my face was fully cleaned and cleared, she began with the peel. Now, I say peel but the first 2 treatments, only contain 10% acidity (raising by 5% every 2 treatments, resulting in treatment 5&6 at 20%) and I have to say, that it really only felt like a very lovely facial! There was no burning and she wasn’t peeling off layers of skin by the end as some might Massage • Threading • Nails imagine, it was simply pure decadence. Waxing • Facials • Tanning

Body and Sole

Lash Enhancements Reflexology • Aromatherapy • Pay for a course of 6 treatments £300 (receive a FREE selection of take home products which will last 1 month and value is £40 and a FREE facial at the end of the course worth £60)

When the hour-long treatment had finished my skin was immediately deliciously soft and within 10 minutes, it was visibly more even toned. All my problem areas around my T-zone had improved massively and actually I felt quite happy to not be wearing any make -up! Monu really does have a range of super products and the best bit is… you can take them all home! Heather has put together a fabulous offer on this treatment which cannot be purchased except through Voice Magazines… so go on… treat yourself… you won’t be disappointed!!

Book Review

20/10/2017 14:36

A teenage girl goes missing while on holiday in a small village out in the countryside. The villagers join in the search, the media descends, police set up roadblocks, divers start dragging reservoirs. This may sound like a thriller, but Reservoir 13 by Jon McGregor is a story where we know very little and what we do find out emerges in an elliptical way, through the lives of the locals, rather than through a driving narrative which has a beginning middle and an end. It has to be said that if you’re looking for a simple page-turner with lots of clues and action this is probably not for you. There’s no goodies or baddies, no satisfying big revelations in the final pages. However if you’re interested in how people tick, in relationships, and in how places and events have rhythms which help them to stay the same even when huge changes are taking place all around them, you may well find it spellbinding. The book won last year’s Costa Novel award. It is, like all Jon McGregor’s books, beautifully written, a real classic, mesmerising and haunting. He writes about people with compassion and humour. This is an extraordinary and atmospheric read.

with Helen

Let’s get positive...

We all want to be happy don’t we? Well you can be, right now! If you choose to be!

Your greatest power is your ability to choose a positive thought over a negative thought. The language we use and the thoughts we choose determine our mood and emotions. So, although it isn’t always easy, when we really pay attention to what we are saying and thinking we can start to take control over our emotions and levels of happiness. Perhaps when you have a list of jobs to do you might say “Oh no I’ve got to ….” Replace this thought with “I am really looking forward to ….” Or “I am going to choose to make time for….” I was asked recently: But what happens if you really don’t want to do something? A very good question! I used this example to illustrate: One day I had a long drive home and had been thinking “oh no this afternoon I have a long boring 3-hour drive” so I mentally changed the thought to “this afternoon I can enjoy some peaceful driving through beautiful countryside listening to my favourite music on the way back to my lovely home.” It was surprising what a difference I felt both in the run up to my journey home and during the journey itself; I had music on, singing along, stopping off to buy some fresh food for when I arrived home and feeling grateful to arrive home safely. So if you’re not feeling positive about something then change that thought! This also extends to who we think about and what we think about them. So next time you have a negative emotion towards another person either change your

thought about them or think about something else entirely … you can control what goes on in your head! However hard this may sound it really is possible, but only if you WANT to choose a positive thought and let go of the negative. You might think that surely everyone wants to let go of negative emotions but sometimes we hold onto anger or upset because we feel it will change a situation, that we have a right to those feelings or we just do not realise our emotions are something we can control. It is only when we come to realise that we are only harming ourselves with our negative thoughts that we really start to want to change them. And we can!

Positive Thinking Exercise:

Choose 3 things you are not feeling positive about and DECIDE to change how you look at them, write down 3 positive affirmations to replace your original thought! Some examples might be: I do not like my body … “I am grateful for my happy healthy body and will look after it as best I can”

I hate my job …. “I am lucky to have a job at which I will try my best and I look forward to new career opportunities which are coming my way” My partner never cleans the house…. “My partner makes me laugh and we care about each other deeply”

I don’t have enough money … “I am grateful for the money and wealth I do have and the universe will continue to provide for me”

Wishing you all happy thoughts!

Give a dog a home... Jerry Green Dog Rescue, care for and rehome abandoned and unwanted dogs, and will never put a dog to sleep unless it’s health or temperament make this the kindest option. We receive no official funding, or lottery funding and are dependent on donations from the public. We run five centres in the east of England, including your nearest one in Nottinghamshire at Warsop Lane, Blidworth, NG21 0PG. We are open 1:30pm to 4:00pm every day except Wednesday.

Reggie

1 year 8 months - Male - Crossbreed Hi everybody, Reggie here! I am a young, handsome chap with a lot of love give. Playing with other dogs is one of my favourite things to do, so ideally I would like to live in a home with another dog to help with my confidence. I can be nervous initially but once you have gained my trust - I will be your best friend FOREVER! I can also live with calm teenagers. Are you the family to share my life with? If so, please contact my friends at the Nottinghamshire centre (they think I’m awesome!)

Paddy

8 years 0 months - Male Jack Russell Terrier

Hello! Paddy here, are you looking for a lovable, funny terrier? It’s never a dull moment whilst I’m around! I loveeee women’s company, especially someone who will know about my terrier ways. I would like a quiet home with lots of company and walks. Food is my favourite thing in the world but I don’t like car travel very much :( If you want a partner in crime, please call the Notts centre! Paddy x

Rambles with Rafa We have a special walk this month (thanks again to David from JH Legal). It’s a long one, so why not do what we did and make a full day of it. Southwell is a lovely spot for some lunch with lots of places to eat and there are loads of places to stop along the way for a picnic or just to take in the fantastic views. I can also heartedly recommend The Lion at Farnsfield for a much-needed drink, right near the end of the walk.

13-mile circular walk from Farnsfield to Southwell via the Southwell Trail

A longer walk which should take you and your dog around 5-6 hours to complete. The walk is mostly on trails and paths but there are a few short stretches of road so please take care. Please wear appropriate footwear and as always, please follow the countryside code.

Start: Southwell Trail Car Park, Station Lane, Farnsfield. NG22 8LB. (Car Park entrance opposite to 115, Station Lane) 1. Standing with your back to the car park entrance follow the trail directly ahead sign posted for Southwell. After some distance cross straight over a road and continue along the trail. 2. After approximately 1½ miles pass through a gap adjacent to a large metal gate and continue along the trail for some distance to pass through a small car park. Follow the narrow road out of the car park and when the road bends sharp left, keep straight ahead along the trail to pass through a gap adjacent to a large metal gate and underneath an arch bridge. 3. Continue along the trail for quite some distance passing underneath a second arch bridge and across a road and eventually across a lane. Continue along a lane for a short distance and through a gap next to a large metal gate. 4. Keep walking along the trail until passing through a car park to reach a road. Turn right along the road. Cross straight over a crossroads and continue uphill with a small green on either side. 5. Pass a war memorial on your left and continue to pass shops on both sides of the road. Turn left at the mini roundabout and upon reaching Southwell Cathedral Shop on your right turn right after the shop to pass through a gap into the cathedral grounds. 6. Head towards the cathedral and just prior to reaching the cathedral bear right to follow a path walking away from the cathedral and through a stone archway. Turn right along the road and left at the mini roundabout. 7. Continue straight ahead over the roundabout for a very short distance and then turn left into Queen Street until taking a tarmac lane on your left, opposite Rope Walk on your right, signposted for ‘Lone’s Wong Infant & Junior School’. After a very short distance bear slightly to the right to follow a signposted footpath with a fence and school on your right. 8. Pass through a chicane to continue with a fence on your right. Turn right at a T junction of footpaths. Walk down some steps and continue with a fence on your left. Over a very short distance the path splits into two twice. Keep left on both occasions and continue with a fence on your left. 9. Upon reaching a road cross straight over, pass a sign for ‘Busy Bees’ on your right and then bear slightly right along a footpath on the edge of an open field with a hedge on your left. 10. Continue along the edge of the field and you will eventually have a metal fence on your left. When the fence ends and just prior to reaching a road, turn 90 degrees right and continue along a footpath to cross the open field. Continue along this path, crossing over a small wooden bridge and reaching a main road and turning left. 11. Ignore the first turn on the left signposted for ‘Oxten’, then after some distance take the second turn on the left along ‘Saversick Lane’. After a short distance turn right onto a signposted footpath. Continue along the footpath to the left of a line of trees and parallel with a tarmac driveway passing to the left of a telegraph pole. 12. Pass through a wooden gate and along a signposted footpath along a lane passing through a farm. A little further on when the lane splits in two, keep right to continue with the trees on your left. After some distance pass into some trees and then pass through a metal gate into a field. 13. Continue downhill and cross the open field keeping the buildings on your right. At the far side of the field go through the gate on your right of two metal gates to continue downhill with a hedge on both sides. Upon reaching a road turn left for a short distance, then turn right onto ‘Manor Fields’ which is a concrete lane and signposted footpath. 14. Pass a footpath sign on your right and then pass through a wooden gate on your right along the footpath. Cross over a river bridge, climb some steps and then pass through another wooden gate. Immediately after the gate turn right uphill along a footpath with a hedge on your right. 15. Pass through a wooden gate by a house on your left. Now continue uphill with a hedge on your right. Pass through a wooden gate and continue with a hedge on your left and open views to your right along the edge of the field until reaching a tarmac lane. 16. Cross over the tarmac lane and along a lane and signposted ‘Byway’ directly ahead of you. Pass a signposted footpath on your right and a house on your left to follow the lane around to the right. 17. At a tarmac road turn left and after a short distance ignore the signposted footpath on your right to continue ahead along the road until it bends sharp to the left. At this point turn right to pass through a

gap adjacent to a small wooden gate and continue along a signposted footpath going downhill with a hedge on both sides. 18. At the bottom of the hill pass through a gap and then a little further on pass through a metal gate. Immediately after passing through the gate turn right and you will come to a road. 19. Turn left along the road then turn right to cross over a stile into a field and onto a signposted footpath. Follow the footpath downhill along a farm track to pass a telegraph pole on your right and cross over a stream. Now look over to your right and locate a large gap in the hedge. Make your way to pass through the gap in the hedge then turn immediately left to continue uphill keeping the hedge on your left. 20. Continue to the top of the hill and begin to go down the other side, reaching a hedge directly in front of you. Turn right along the edge of the field and after a short distance turn left through a gap, going downhill along a footpath with trees on your right and open views on your left. 21. At the bottom of the hill chicane right then left to continue straight ahead to cross an open field going gently uphill. Upon reaching some trees in front of you, continue to keep the trees on your right and open views to your left until you reach a junction of paths with a bench seat directly in front of you. Turn left to follow a footpath with a hedge on both sides. 22. Continue straight ahead as the footpath meets a lane and then at a T junction with a single-track road turn right. Upon reaching a T junction with a tarmac road turn right for a short distance, then turn left along a signposted bridleway with a hedge on both sides. 23. Continue along the bridleway for some distance, passing through a gap then eventually cross over a farm track to pass through a gap in a hedge to join a footpath with a fence on both sides. 24. After some distance along the footpath pass through a wooden gate, cross straight over a road and continue along a tarmac footpath with a wall on both sides. The footpath ends and joins with a road for a very short distance to reach a T junction of roads. Turn right at the T junction for a short distance until reaching a T junction with a main road. 25. Turn right and continue ahead until reaching a village store on your right, taking a road on your left called ‘New Hill’. Head uphill for some distance passing ‘ Farnsfield Tennis Club’ on your left. Then after some distance and just after passing a no limits sign turn left onto a trail. 26. After some distance the trail splits in two. Keep left and continue straight ahead along the trail until reaching the car park.

iLocked escape room review – The Mummy

I’ll let you into a little secret… this was not our first escape room. We’re big fans, with several notches on our belt. So, I feel we’re pretty well suited to offer our opinion! iLocked take having fun very seriously. We met the guys behind the magic, Marat and Liam and their passion for what they do was clear. They describe their escape rooms as 4th, 5th and 6th generation. Which to you and me simply means they have raised the bar massively on the technology used to create the rooms, with the end result being a fun, immersive and seamless experience. The room we experienced was The Mummy and experienced is the operative word! Inside we got to be Indiana Jones-type adventurers trying to escape the curse of an ancient pharaoh. We brought along our novice friends to give their view, having never experienced any type of escape room before.

Liam (left) & Marat (right)

Now some of the escape rooms we have done in the past left me feeling somewhat disappointed as it felt a bit like we were just locked in a room with a load of padlocks to open before we could get out. However, being in an iLocked room is very different to other escape rooms. One of our party said it was like the Crystal Maze but I would say it feels more like you are in the middle of a real-life computer game and a lot, lot less like you are stuck in a box.

I don’t want to give anything away but there’s a lot more to these rooms than first meets the eye, with hidden doors, moving walls and all sorts of clever technological features that blend seamlessly into the theme. I whole heartedly recommend a visit and I’m not the only one - check out the 5-star reviews on TripAdvisor. Whether you have done other escape rooms in the past or this is a new thing for you I’m sure you would have a fantastic time. And don’t worry about getting stuck in the room, one of the guys is always on hand to give you a hint if you need one so you don’t get stuck and bored. It’s perfect for parties for adults or kids, so whether you have a stag do or a birthday party coming up take a look on their website. The rooms can be adapted for children and it’s right in the middle of Nottingham so it’s perfect to combine with a great night out. We’re planning to bring you a review of the Alien room next month and in August they are planning to release the Battleship Room, which simply sounds incredible! Let me just say – virtual reality and a real-life dolphin (ok, maybe not real life but there is a dolphin!)

are you planning on reTiring?

Andrew Whitehead Director

Just because saving for retirement is difficult, it doesn’t mean you should give up; and the current reliefs and allowances on pension contributions should give cause for optimism. If you expect to retire on a final-salary pension and with no mortgage, your perspective on retirement may well be rosy; if you are grappling with debt and worried about having insufficient pension savings, it may be a different picture. For some, the question is not how to retire successfully, but how to retire at all, given that there may be precious little in the way of a state safety net to fall back on. Research from the Financial Conduct Authority reveals that around 15 million individuals are not saving anything towards their retirement and will have to rely entirely on the State Pension in their later years.1 Of particular concern is the group of pre-retirees aged 55–64, only half of whom have given thought to how they will manage in retirement; and only a quarter know how much they have in their pension pot.2 These people may only have a few working years left to build their nest egg. Why do so many people fail to plan their retirement? This could be partly due to massively underestimating the amount of money they need to save. According to BlackRock, those who were asked to calculate how much they would need for their desired retirement income of £26,000 a year estimated they would require £233,000 in savings; and yet they would need a pot of £525,000 for this income, even including the State Pension.3 People also underestimate longevity and therefore how long retirement could last. Only 7% of people aged 55–64 today expect to live to 90, but research indicates that half of them can expect to live that long.4 The obvious implication is that many retirement pots will run out too soon. Many experts are warning that the end of final-salary pension schemes, chronic underfunding of defined contribution pensions, and increasing life expectancy are creating a perfect storm that threatens to destabilise the financial wellbeing of the coming generation of retirees.

The soluTion is To plan You have to ask yourself: how much will I need, and how much can I afford to put away? Then you need to factor in any other sources of retirement income and you can see the size of the gap you are trying to fill. Obviously, the younger you are, the longer the investment time horizon and the most you will have to gain when thinking ahead. However, middle age is a time when incomes are at or near their peak, so there are significant opportunities to catch up; and the end of the tax year presents an ideal opportunity to do so. Subject to limitations, people in the UK can make pension contributions of up to 100% of their earnings or £40,000, whichever is lower. While paying the maximum may seem a tall order, remember that the government rewards you for saving into a pension in the form of tax relief. Worryingly, according to BlackRock’s research, 50% of people are unaware that the government boosts pension contributions; the research also showed that fewer than a third of people are aware of ‘pension freedoms’ changes and how these impact on their retirement prospects.6 This is further evidence that lack of awareness remains one of the key barriers to making adequate retirement provision. It’s vital savers know and understand all their options for using their pension; but also that they make the most of the current tax breaks while building one. Now is a good time to take advice. You may find unclaimed allowances waiting for you. Mike’s Musings To help save the planet I will keep this short and sweet. Here’s Mikes Musing for July!

Saving the Planet (Part 3?)

It would appear from comments that I pick up around the neighbourhood that some of you still fail to accept that UCIP (Union of Clever & Intelligent People) will ever be a credible force in UK politics.

words in conversation just to try and impress people. His argument is that those of us who are, by nature (or choice) both verbose and loquacious, breathe in (& more importantly ....... out!) quicker and more frequently than others.

OK, we may not have had much electoral success so far. In fact, we’ve lost more ‘deposits’ than the number of dog turds to be found on the streets of Newton on an average morning but....... things will change! If nothing else, perhaps the dogs and their owners may become a little less anti-social. Sorry, I digress!

Now for some people this might be difficult and there may even be some of you out there thinking that my prattling and blathering on is a clear case of the pot calling the kettle black. Well, just remember that as I sit here typing, I’m breathing perfectly normally!!

If you’re one of those who remain sceptical, here is another of the brilliant suggestions that George, our ‘Spokesperson for Environmental Affairs’, has come up with as he lies awake at night just thinking of how he can ‘save the world’. This might make you change your mind, join the UCIP bandwagon and become a campaigner to have George awarded the soon to be created Nobel Prize for the Saving of Humanity. George has discovered (OK – he just googled for a bit) that when we human beings breathe out we exhale approximately 100 times more carbon dioxide than we breathe in. This might come a shock to many of you but, in reality, it appears as if all the CO2 that we individually and collectively exhale is helping to seal the fate of the planet for future generations. The simple solution of course would be to advocate that we all stop breathing. However, we at UCIP recognise that this may not be a vote winning policy and George’s proposal has a better chance of success. Quite simply, he is asking all of us to stop using long complicated

40

To prove George’s point, here is a public announcement that is an example of verbosity at its best/worse. You decide. From the get go, we said that we would utilise maximum velocity in order that we ensure that your transportation reaches your nominated destination at the predicted hour. Were we correct? Absolutely! We fully expect to arrive momentarily. OK, that’s a bit American in content, but just to prove the point and to help save the planet, George thinks the message could be shortened to:At the start, we said we would use top speed to ensure that the train arrived on time. Were we right? Yes. We will arrive shortly. With apologies, partly because I’ve been rambling on a bit, there will be no quiz this month. Normal service will be resumed in August 2018 (NB – to help save the planet that should be August, twenty eighteen and not August, two thousand and eighteen!).

Gardener’s Calendar ~ July 2018

This part of summer is mostly about looking after what you’ve got in the garden, rather than planting new additions. The new compost with which you will probably have boosted baskets and pots at the start of the growing season will now be running short of nutrients, so it’s time to start feeding with good quality liquid plant food which is easily watered in. Feeding is also important when you’ve cut back plants which are starting to go leggy. It gives the kick they need to get producing new growth. But when you’re deadheading plants with spires, such as snapdragons or foxgloves, make sure you only take out the part that has gone over. Often they have side shoots which will grow on once the main shoot has gone. Tie your climbers such as clematis in to supports which are horizontal or even lower to encourage them to put on more growth as they try to climb.

Top Tip!

Watering is fundamental at this time of year. Water in the evening if possible. Water drops on leaves and flowers can burn in hot sunlight. Also water terracotta plant pots as well as the plants in them as they draw moisture from the soil.

Cooper’s Corner Follow Barry on Twitter @bazdjcooper Football writer at Trinity Mirror

This month Barry give us his thoughts on the latest appointment at Derby County FC. All the Derby fans I speak to seem pretty excited about the signing but a quick google search told me that this was the 7th manager since June 2015. So is there room for optimism or will we be talking about the 8 th manager soon?

The summer managerial merry-go-round is well underway… I still can’t decide whether I was surprised or not to see Gary Rowett quit Derby County and instead opt for a move up the A50 to Stoke City. Rowett resisted the Potters’ overtures in January at a time when Derby were still challenging for a place in the Premier League and City were still, just about, in it. Just a few months on and yet another Derby bottle job later, Rowett probably jumped from the Pride Park ship before Mel Morris’ trigger finger pressed the eject button and removed him from the post. I suppose you’d have to applaud Morris to a degree. He managed to eke out a couple of million pounds worth of compensation from Stoke for a manager I believe he wanted to sack after the play-off defeat to Fulham – had he of sacked him, that would have cost substantial compensation and given the money the Rams are losing each month, he could scarcely afford that. Morris isn’t a patient man and he demanded promotion and failure to do so will cost him and the Financial Fair Play concerns will have risen yet further. His investment at Pride Park needed promotion and the £170m plus riches it brings with it, and now he’ll have to cut his cloth accordingly – not quite to the scale of Aston Villa, who gambled everything on going up and could very well find administration as scant reward for their own failure. Instead of jumping back on the managerial bandwagon that sees the same names trotted

48

out every time a job becomes available, the Rams have gone down a different path with Frank Lampard. It’s an exciting appointment, and one to watch with interest. He may not have managed before and may still be working towards his relevant coaching badges, but Lampard has had a superb career at the very top level, working under some of the great coaches which he’d have learnt a great deal from. Lampard is a thinker, he’s a student of the game and that may well work in Derby’s favour. Mourinho, Hiddink, Ancelotti to name but three will have all passed things onto the ex-Chelsea and England man, who has been coaching for a period of time now, his bank of knowledge is greater than some give him credit for. Derby have rolled the dice before with the likes of Steve McClaren, Paul Clement and then Rowett – those moves failed to secure promotion from the Championship, so why not try something a bit different? I’d back Lampard to have success quicker than his old Three Lions teammate at Rangers, Steven Gerrard. What Morris has to do however, is afford Lampard patience. It may well take time for him to find his feet and he’ll make mistakes along the way; this first season may turn out to be a steep learning curve, only time will tell on that, but by appointing Frank, Morris is accepting those conditions and must understand he can’t repeat the mistakes he’s done before otherwise Derby’s hope of a return to the top flight will remain a pipe dream.
