Editor’s Message So here is a scary thought, two more editions before Santa arrives and I’m still wearing my flip flops! Not sure what is going on this year but I simultaneously love it and loathe it #confused. The really good news this month is that it is our Birthday…..8 years, 279 editions and over 1.4m magazines. In September 2010 we put out our first edition, sold, designed and delivered all by my fair hand to 2,500 homes in the Swanwick, Riddings and Leabrooks area. We’ve come a long way with over 30,000 homes now receiving Voice Magazines with further expansion plans coming over the next few years. Some of my first customers are still advertising with me today and it has been and continues to be one of the best bits of this magazine, being able to watch these local businesses grow with me. Another fuzzy glow I get is being able to bring the best and latest community news and events to all our lovely readers, which have also grown with me year on year. So, I raise a glass and a cupcake to you all as I look forward to another 8 years J In other news this month, despite foster failing with Flake (i.e. keeping him) we have been asked to take on another and she is due to land tomorrow (at the time of writing). We absolutely can’t have another dog but I am a sucker for a hard luck story and I know that Spaniel Aid have been struggling for fosterers of late (mostly due to the holiday season). So, if you would like to help or you would like a furry companion, why not visit www.spanielaid.co.uk and see if you can make a difference.

Taking time away from technology…

There is no doubt about it technology is amazing, useful and very clever! However, as with many things there are often drawbacks and it seems that with the increase of technology our lives become faster and busier.

make a call or send a text message I had to walk around the field trying to find a signal!

As part of my summer holiday I spent a week camping in North Wales. No TV or laptop and if I wanted to

So, this had me thinking of ways I can reduce screen time in my life.

There are emerging themes of associated health issues with excessive screen time. It can hinder creativity, it is often when we have moments of nothing to do that we, and especially children, are our most creative and innovative. And sometimes it means that we are inadvertently being antisocial, relying on technology and “social” media instead of actually engaging with the people and community around us, even neglecting ourselves and our own needs.

I know not everyone ‘gets’ the joys of camping and I have to confess after two days of camping in a cloud on the side of a hill with howling winds threatening to blow our tent away I had more than a few moments of doubt myself! Yet there is something therapeutic about escaping from the fast pace of everyday life and focussing on your most basic needs of ‘setting up’ home, cooking outdoors and staying warm and dry. And when the sun finally decided to put in appearance for us… bliss! It was great to see so many children on the campsite actually playing, instead of with their eyes glued to a screen. They looked happy and carefree!

Suggestions for reducing the amount of screen time you have at home... ü Have a screen free evening: No TV, phones or laptops!

ü Make your bedroom a screen free zone, no phone or TV in the bedroom – use an alarm clock instead of using your phone ü When someone speaks to you whilst you’re on your phone or computer or watching TV make a decision: Either ask the person to wait until you have finished doing what you are doing if it is important or put down the phone/ turn off the TV/turn away from the laptop and give your full attention to the person in front of you. ü Take some time away from social media or take any social media apps off your phone and limit yourself to a certain amount of time on your computer each day or week. ü When you are left alone for a few moments, maybe in a restaurant why your co-eater visits the bathroom, resist the temptation to check your phone, instead enjoy a few moments of peace for yourself, perhaps doing some people watching, enjoying the atmosphere and what is going on around you or just relaxing and feeling calm. ü Set a timer so that when you have been on your screen for so long you are reminded to take a break or turn off. ü Disable email and social media notifications from smart phones and tablets so you can read messages at a time that is convenient and chosen by you – if it is urgent or important someone will phone you!

Wishing you lots of relaxing screen free time this month,

Helen

Book Review

18/04/2018 10:38

Robert Harris’s Munich may not be the book to read if you’re looking for a surprise ending. After all we know that the meeting between Hitler and Chamberlain in 1938 didn’t end well. But Harris, perhaps best known for his thrillers and the equally successful series about Roman statesman Cicero, doesn’t do obvious – or boring - and this book is a cracker of a story. It covers the late September conference which holds out the promise of a last gasp at the chance for peace. The one which Chamberlain, one of the most excoriated Prime Ministers of our time, emerged from, waving a piece of paper and proclaiming “peace in our time”. One of the worst calls of recent history, even in these days of fake news. But is it possible to see Chamberlain in a different light? Was a different ending ever on the cards? If so, how. As always Harris’s historical research is impeccable. As is his ability to weave a darkly gripping spy story from the machinations of the time. **For those of you who read Reservoir 13, Jon McGregor’s fascinating story set in a rural village after a young girl on holiday goes missing on the moors in midwinter, there’s another treat in store. His “prequel” – The Reservoir Tapes – takes its timeframe from the period before Becky Shaw vanishes and spells out the origins of the tale through the lives of people who were players in the later story. Originally written for radio, these stories translate beautifully to the page. Brilliant stuff.

Rambles with Rafa Having ventured further afield of late, this month we are back on home turf with a walk that starts from Tibshelf ponds. The walk heads out on the Silverhill Trail and across to Doe Hill park before circling round and heading back along a different path. A lovely gentle walk that makes use of some lovely local trails. Our thanks go out again to David from JH Legal for this scenic walk. It certainly got the Rafa and Flake double-paw of approval!

5 1/2-mile circular walk from Tibshelf Ponds to Doe Hill park A mid-length walk which should take you and your dog around 2 - 2½ hours to complete. The walk is mostly on trails and paths but there are a few short stretches of road so please take care. Please wear appropriate footwear and as always, please follow the countryside code.

Start: Tibshelf Ponds Car Park, Sunny Bank, Tibshelf. Derbys. DE55 5PF 1. Facing the car park entrance take the footpath just to the left of the entrance and then after a very short distance at a T junction of footpaths turn left to continue along a well laid path passing a pond on both sides. 2. Continue along this path for some distance ignoring all of the paths on the left and right. After some distance pass through a metal width restrictor and then turn right onto the Silver Hill Trail. 3. Pass by a sign and path to the right for ‘Tibshelf Ponds’ and then a little further on at a fork in the path keep right and continue straight ahead. After a short distance cross over a road bridge and then after some distance pass underneath an arch bridge. 4. Continue straight ahead for a long distance and then pass through a metal width restrictor to a T junction of paths. Turn right to continue along a lane and after a short distance pass through a gap adjacent to a metal barrier and onto a road. 5. Cross over the road diagonal left to continue to pass through another gap and onto a tarmac lane. Continue straight ahead along the lane for some distance and then just prior to crossing over a rail bridge turn right to pass through a gap in the hedge. 6. Ignore the path immediately to the right and continue straight ahead towards a signboard on your left. At this point you will reach a fork in the path. Keep to the left and continue along this path for some distance until reaching a T junction of paths. 7. Turn left at the T junction and then after a very short distance at a fork in the path keep to the right. Continue along this path for some distance until reaching a car park. Pass through the car park and bear around to the left to continue towards the car park entrance. Just prior to reaching the entrance and a height restrictor, turn left onto a footpath. 8. Continue along this path until reaching a fork in the path. Keep to the right passing a pond on your right and then continue to pass another path on your left. After some distance you will reach an intersection of paths with a path on the left and then a path on the right. Ignore these paths and continue straight ahead going uphill. 9. Continue along this path twisting a winding uphill and eventually down the other side. After passing a signboard on your right and just prior to passing through a gap in the hedge in front of you, turn left along a footpath to continue with a hedge on your right.

10. Continue along this path for some distance and pass by a gap in the hedge on your right. A little further on pass through a gap in the hedge on the right. After passing through the gap turn left, cross over a road and continue to pass through a gap adjacent to a metal barrier and onto a lane. 11. Continue along the lane for a short distance until reaching a large metal gate and tall metal fence on your right. At this point turn left along a bridleway with trees and open fields on your left and trees and a fence on your right. Initially, this path runs parallel with the Silver Hill Trail you were on earlier. 12. Continue for some distance and then eventually the bridleway widens into a lane. After some distance follow the lane as it bears around to the left. Now you will begin to pass houses on your right and a school on your left. Eventually you will come to a T-junction with a road. 13. Turn right along the road going uphill and then after some distance take the 1st turning on the right into ‘Newton Road’. Continue, going downhill for some distance and then take the 1st turning on the left into ‘Shetland Road’. 14. After some distance take the 1st turning on the right into ‘Sunny Bank’. Continue along ‘Sunny Bank’ until the road turns into a lane and continue along the lane until you reach the car park on your left.

Give a dog a home... Jerry Green Dog Rescue, care for and rehome abandoned and unwanted dogs, and will never put a dog to sleep unless it’s health or temperament make this the kindest option. We receive no official funding, or lottery funding and are dependent on donations from the public. We run five centres in the east of England, including your nearest one in Nottinghamshire at Warsop Lane, Blidworth, NG21 0PG. We are open 1:30pm to 4:00pm every day except Wednesday.

Flynn

3 years - Male - Lurcher Hi my name is Flynn, I am such a fun dog to be around! I love making new friends and I am often jumping in the air and running around doing zoomies to show off how happy I am! I am an affectionate boy who loves to come over for a cuddle and a kiss. I can live with another dog if I find the right match and can live with children 10+. I can sometimes get a little bit worried when I am left, especially over night and need help to understand that it is OK to be in the dark. I am a beautiful boy as you can see and I can’t wait to find my forever home. If you are interested in meeting me please call the Notts team on 01623 792886.

Phoenix

4 years - Male - Greyhound Hi guys, I’m Phoenix! I am a gentle giant waiting for my forever home as my life on the race track has come to an end. I would like a quiet home where I can relax and stretch my long legs on a comfy sofa! An adult only and pet free home is what I am looking for, with somebody who will help me build up my confidence. If you could offer a home full of love and patience and in return have my unconditional love, then please contact my friends at the Nottinghamshire centre. Love, Phoenix x

iLocked escape room review – Alien!

After the great fun we had last time we had to check out the other rooms at ILocked. So, we headed back with a couple of extra recruits (as it takes 4-8 players) to try our luck at the larger Alien escape room. As always, I don’t like to give too much away, but this room really offers something different straight from the start when you are separated and have to figure out how to get back together. It is set in the year 2224 and you are a crew of astronauts thrown into an emergency when the spaceship’s self-destruct system reports and unknown biomaterial – Aliens! As ever it’s a race against time to solve the puzzles and escape before time runs out! The excitement levels in this escape room are high and the imagination required to create it, really is so impressive. There is never a moment of boredom (or even catch your breath) as there is so much to do and solve. As ever with iLocked the emphasis is on a seamless experience due to high-tech approach they take. The absolutely ingenious thing about this room is that the difficulty level can be adjusted to accommodate the audience. So, this room is great for everyone from kids to serious escapers alike and the fun level doesn’t drop. As for us, we were a shambles! Our leader melted under the pressure and we ran around like a bunch of overexcited fools, but we had a great time doing it! Fortunately, I can honestly say that we could try this room again and it would never get boring, especially when they bring in some of the exciting updates they have planned! Having said that, we are looking forward to Battleship which is opening in October. It is hard to believe but Marat and Liam tell us that this is going to bigger and better than ever!

PeTeR’S PHOTOgRAPHY PAge Hi, I’m Peter, your friendly local photographer, hoping to help capture your events and memories, whether you are looking for a beautiful portrait, to capture the romance of your wedding or to promote your business endeavours. However, I wanted to use this opportunity to share with you some of my experiences and knowledge each month.

IMPROVE YOUR PHOTOS TIP #3 Interaction

Taking photos is great fun and is an easy way of recording what you are doing, who you are with, and what you can see. You may have an expensive digital camera, a treasured film camera, or just your mobile phone. Regardless, photography is a brilliant way for you to get creative. As children head back to school the time draws near in most schools for ‘the School Photo.’ Often when parents receive the results they do so with a sense of disappointment. Did the photographer not notice her lunch spread over her jumper? How could they leave a tie at half mast? “I wish I had been there to clean his face!” To get a great image there has to be attention to detail (such as clean faces). But for a really great portrait the image should reflect the character of the person being photographed, through the interaction between the subject and the photographer. That is why school photos often do not give parents what they want. The photography company has the mammoth task of getting hundreds of children photographed. The school wants it all done with the minimum disruption. Understandably there is not the time for much interaction and attention to detail. So when parents ask me to re-take school photos, what is different? Firstly, Mum or Dad are on hand to make sure that hair and uniform are just right. Secondly, I am looking to capture something of the student’s personality, the interaction between the student and myself. Here are some handy hints on how to get interaction into your photos: 1. Forget asking people to smile or say cheese - it rarely produces a real smile 2. Try asking them instead to do something, such as tell a story, sing a song, talk about career paths or unicorns (depending on age and interests). Then snap away as they talk to you. If you are looking for school photos taken in your own home then please get in contact. Peter Nutkins

Mike’s Musings I’ve heard it said that you can’t please all of the people all of the time but you can please some of the people some of the time. It seems that Mike’s UCIP party may have taken this on and why not, when most governments get elected on less!

Improving Quality of Life (Part 2)

Unsurprisingly, there has been favourable reaction to last month’s revelations on how UCIP would look to minimise annoying disruptions at theatres and sporting arenas. This has merely confirmed our belief at UCIP HQ that we really are the party that listens to and acts upon the wishes of the people.

they would support any party/candidate who promised to stop men selfishly failing to replace toilet seats after use. This was a consistent cause of frustration for all of them, and despite polite requests made to the men in their lives was, at best, acted upon occasionally, but much more frequently, stubbornly ignored.

Suitably encouraged, we recently sent George (NB – he now has a much wider brief and is no longer merely our ‘Spokesperson for Environmental Affairs’, but is officially entitled UCIP’s People’s Champion) up to Alfreton Bus Station to discover what issues of the day troubled those waiting for transport after doing their weekly shop.

George, having listened sympathetically (and feeling just a little guilty himself although he wasn’t going to admit that!) said that, at the earliest opportunity, UCIP would introduce measures to resolve this issue.

As it happens, George found that, with one exception, all those waiting to return to their home villages were women, fully laden with food and provisions which, in total, would probably have been enough to sustain an army on the march for a full month. He introduced himself and then asked the ladies present if they could collectively agree upon one particular issue which, if banned or eliminated, would make their life so much more tolerable. He added that whilst he couldn’t immediately promise anything, he would make sure that once UCIP had serious representation at Westminster, the Party would canvass any MP who had won the right to introduce a Private Member’s Bill to seek a solution to whatever they came up with. After spending a couple of minutes checking out the bus times to Jacksdale he returned to the group to find that they were ‘of one voice’.

Firstly, he would ask the Party’s Spokesperson for the ‘Resolution of Domestic Disputes’ to liaise with the Technical Department to create a prototype ASLTS (Automatically Self Lowering Toilet Seat). Once this had been perfected, and on the assumption that UCIP held the balance of power in any future Government, the plan would be to have this female friendly invention installed in all ‘new build’ housing with immediate effect. A phased replacement programme would then be carried out on existing properties. George felt a warm self-satisfied glow as he saw how his audience, truly representative of 50% of the electorate, embraced this radical suggestion. One lady, Lynne from Swanwick, even came over and give him an affectionate peck on the cheek. However, having promised George that they would now vote UCIP, as the group chattered excitedly amongst themselves, the lone male at the Bus Station, beckoned George over............................! You’ll find out what he had to say next month.

Pat from Westhouses, having taken on the role of spokeswoman, said that they had all agreed that

Gardener’s Calendar ~ September 2018

Keep deadheading to persuade your plants to keep on producing until well into autumn. Perennials can be divided and replanted now for more plants next year. Dig around the root. Separate into chunks with a fork or by placing two spades back to back if the roots are especially tough and cut through. Water in well and keep watering until established. The warmth and rain at this time of year makes it the best time for this task.

Our lawns have suffered badly with this year’s drought. Although most will recover eventually, any bare patches can be seeded now with a good chance of growth. (see above!) If you have got problems with thatch or moss, scarify with a rake pulling out the dead stuff. It may look unsightly now but it gives grass room to spread. Remember to aerate with a fork before the frosts set in and it’s worth applying a top dressing before winter. Collect seeds to give you flowers next summer. Most seeds are ready to save a couple of months after flowering and seed heads turn from green to brown or black. Place a paper bag over the seed heads and shake. If the seeds don’t come free, cut the heads off and crush, discarding any surrounding material. Place in an airtight container with a desiccant (silicate gel or those little bags you find in handbags etc.) Store in fridge at 5 degrees. Don’t forget to label them.

Top Tip!

Think about spring. Wallflowers and foxgloves can go in to give them a head start and daff bulbs can be started off now.

Cooper’s Corner Follow Barry on Twitter @bazdjcooper Football writer at Trinity Mirror

It’s back!!! A busy summer for all involved has made way for the return of the football season and the fortunes of our local clubs look like they are on the up. All this optimism has got me a bit giddy so I’ll pass over to Barry to give you his take on it all…

It’s amazing how quickly things can change at a football club, and that’s certainly been the case at Nottingham Forest and Notts County. Everybody knows the Reds have struggled in recent years and with no Premier League football in almost 20, the gulf between the club and their rivals in the East Midlands has grown, while the Magpies have found themselves on the verge of a Football League departure, leaving Nottingham to flounder in the footballing doldrums. Derby County and Leicester City have both moved well ahead of Forest, both on and off the field, while it wasn’t so long ago that the Magpies sunk to the bottom of League Two, lost 10 in a row and had home crowds of 2,000. Thankfully, it seems as if Nottingham is dragging itself kicking and screaming into the modern world, as both clubs look to breathe life into their flagging fortunes. At Forest, an impressive summer of business (12 new signings at the time of writing) in the transfer market, coupled with season ticket sales in excess of 21,000 has raised expectations that finally, this club might get to taste top flight football for the first time in two decades. Across the River Trent, Kevin Nolan made 10 additions himself during a busy summer period, in the hope the

42

world’s oldest league club can go one better than they did last season, when they beaten by Coventry in a dramatic play-off semi-final and escape the basement division. Forest were described as being mired in intensive care when Evangelos Marinakis took the club off the hands of haphazard owner Fawaz Al Hasawi little over a year ago, but that’s quickly changing with the Reds becoming a proper football club once more, one that’s cared for and loved by the masses like it used to be. While Alan Hardy may be a Marmite owner to some, there’s no doubt Kevin Nolan, the likeable Scouser is doing his best with Hardy to shake Notts’ reputation for being a club stuck in the 60s and drag itself into the modern era, and we shouldn’t forget the good work being done by the Radford’s at Mansfield Town, either. The East Midlands has struggled for too long, relying on Leicester to be the sole representation in the top flight, with Forest’s new found competitiveness, and the Rams’ exciting appointment of Frank Lampard, coupled with Notts and Mansfield rising again, maybe, just maybe, this region can have something of a renaissance over the next nine months.
