Editor’s Message Happy New Year!!! 2018 was a funny year wasn’t it? There were ups and downs but I hope it was a good year for you all personally. Here at Voice Mags we’re planning for a big 2019, no matter what
Don’t forget to mention the ‘Voice’ when you use any of the companies in this magazine
happens with Brexit. Our new website is going to be launching soon, packed with all the great content in the magazine and hopefully a lot more. We are also looking at expansions in the Voice Magazine family. As you may well know we have 4 other sister magazines, mostly located in the DE55 area and we are looking at adding a couple more magazines in spring along with a specialist magazine towards the end of the year. More about that in the coming months… Have you made your new years resolutions? If one of them is to get fit, how about earning a bit of money at the same time too? We’re looking for distributors in a variety of areas. See page 12 for more information. Good news on our most recent foster dog, Harvey. He has found a permanent home with a lovely family in Merseyside. We are so sad to see him go but know he is going to be really happy there. It’s a doubleedged sword fostering but it is amazing when you get pictures and messages telling you how well the dog is doing. January is always a busy time for dog rescue charities so if you can help in anyway, whether it’s Spaniel Aid or any other reputable organisation, please

do what you can. We had an amazing response to our recent Pantomime competition. Thank you to all the entrants and congratulations to the winners. As we had such a good response, we will definitely look to do something similar again, as well as bringing you more great competitions in the future. Until next time…

Book Review
Philip Pullman writes books which take you to another place. Pick up La Belle Sauvage, prepare to be transported. Fans of Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy will dive back into a familiar world which is like our own in so many ways but deliciously and addictively different. Newcomers will find themselves immersed in a universe which ignores rules and opens up the bounds of possibility. Malcolm Polstead is a young lad whose parents run a pub in Oxford. His life is very ordinary and he’s at his happiest messing about in his canoe with his daemon Asta. Ah, the incredible daemons! Once you’ve read about daemons you really, really want one. Every human in these books has a daemon – an animal soulmate which is bonded to them physically, emotionally, and mentally and which provides love and guidance and a best friend in one entity. Malcolm’s humdrummery changes when it starts to rain. And rain. And rain. And Malcolm takes on the challenge of his young life. This is super-charged storytelling, a feast of entertainment and beautifully written.

New Beginnings Happy New Year! I hope you all had a lovely time over the festive season with your loved ones. The start of a new year is often a great time for a fresh start, a new beginning. A time when we can make positive changes, begin new activities and make time to take care of ourselves. If you’re choosing to make a new beginning (either now or at some point later in the year) it might be something relatively small like beginning a new activity or making a small change to your diet or changing your daily routine. Or it could be something much bigger such as a new job, completely changing your diet, moving house or a change in a relationship. New beginnings often take courage, time and effort. First we decide what we want to change and then we have to find the discipline and inner strength to follow through with that change over time! So what does your new beginning look like? Think about what you WANT, write it down! What do you feel passionate about? What is for our greatest good? During the course of any change there will be times when we face doubt, can I really do this? Have I made the right decision? It is useful to be both kind and disciplined with yourself. You might decide to make a change to your diet and then revert to old habits, begin a new activity only to stay in and watch TV instead, forgive yourself, be kind to yourself and start again with strength. Even if we fall we can still keep working towards where we want to be (I lost count of how many times I tried to give up chocolate and biscuits before I finally stuck with it and became chocolate and biscuit free!) Making a big change in your life might also mean you have to give things up, letting go of the familiar. Be brave in your decisions and listen to your gut instinct, remind yourself that often we have to let go of things before we can let the new enter. New beginnings can be both exciting and challenging. Allow yourself to make mistakes and feel vulnerable, you are human. Just keep moving in the direction you want to go in. Here are some tips that I hope you will find helpful on your journey:
14
removal, including microsuction.
Choose new beginnings that are positive and for your greatest good • Talk to people about the changes you are making, having the support of others is useful • Don’t be hard on yourself when you have doubts or make mistakes – they are simply opportunities to reflect and learn • Keep a journal of everything that you are grateful for to develop your positivity • Make a list of positive affirmations to help you stay strong • Keep putting your energy into your new beginning • Let go of what is no longer serving you, make space for the new beginning • Enjoy the journey your new beginning takes you on!

Around the area, the diminutive muntjac (a small deer from East Asia) is controversial because it is ‘non-native’ i.e. ‘alien’. About the size of a small dog, this deer barks when breeding and the male has short, sharp tusks. Moving into the Peak quite recently are native roe deer. Locals have sent me photographs of ones seen near Grindleford Railway Station and in nearby gardens. Both roe and muntjac breed two to three times a year and the males have loud territorial barks heard in the evening and around the early hours. I heard roe barking last August just behind the Grouse Inn at Froggatt. You can hear this for half a mile or so. These are our two smaller deer species, which exist in small family groups rather than herds, and are mostly seen or heard in or around woodlands. Our two other species of deer are altogether more impressive, the red deer being our largest native land mammal. Red deer can easily be seen and in the autumn rut, heard, at captive sites such as Chatsworth Park. Here along with exotic fallow deer, there is a large, domesticated herd. Both species were kept in medieval parks for hunting, food, and ornament. Some herds can be traced back to medieval origins. During the twentieth
century however, in part because houses and parks closed, or owners went off to fight in wars and animals were released into the wild, the one-time domesticated animals turned feral. The most well-known in the eastern Peak centres on Big Moor and I have been studying this population for around thirty years. The wild animals are traceable to the 1980s when the local shepherd rounded up three hinds with his sheep! Since then, with more escapees from Chatsworth supplemented by deliberate introductions by someone from Dore Village, Sheffield, numbers have grown to two hundred plus on Big Moor and many more in the wider area. For on-line ID guides, photographs, and videos, check my research website: www. ukeconet.org, and my blog: https:// ianswalkonthewildside.wordpress.com/. Finally, do send in records, photographs, or video footage about deer in and around the Peak. I would love to hear from you!

Gardener’s Calendar - January 2019 Not the busiest of times in the garden but there are still some jobs to get you outside Rose bushes can be pruned to just above a bud. It’s also a good time to take ornamental grasses back to ground level, cutting foliage to a few centimetres above the soil. Sedums also appreciate a haircut at this time of year. Cut back old stems but be careful not to take new growth. And dead-head your winter pansies to stop them setting seed and thinking their flowering days are done.

Indoor plants come into their own at this time of the year, but central heating can be a bit stressful for them so try misting them – small sprays are cheap and simple.
