Happy New Year!!! 2018 was a funny year wasn’t it? There were ups and downs but I hope it was a good year for you all personally. We have an underappreciated knack of ‘just getting on with things’ in this area, which I think stands us in good stead no matter what is thrown our way.
Don’t forget to mention the ‘Voice’ when you use any of the companies in this magazine
Here at Voice Mags we’re planning for a big 2019, no matter what happens with Brexit! As well as our span dangly new website, (coming soon). We are looking at launching 2 new magazines this year, we’re keeping our powder dry on exactly when and where they will be distributed but let’s just say for now, we’re not going international……… yet!! Good news on our most recent foster dog, Harvey. He has found a permanent home with a lovely family in Merseyside. We are so sad to see him go but know he is going to be really happy there. It’s a doubleedged sword fostering but it is amazing when you get pictures and messages telling you how well the dog is doing. January is always a busy time for dog rescue charities so if you can help in anyway, whether it’s Spaniel Aid, Jerry Green or any other reputable organisation, please do what you can.

We had an amazing response to our recent Pantomime competition. Thank you to all the entrants and congratulations to the winners. We will continue to do our best to bring you great competitions throughout the year and this month is no exception, with our fantastic Crich Tramway Village competition. To find out more on how to win a Family Pass turn to page 13 On a more serious note, we have been made aware that someone has been falsely impersonating us to defraud people of money. They have been going into shops pretending to be from Voice Magazines and taking a cash deposit. At Voice Magazines we take this very seriously and have been in touch with the police to make them aware this has been happening. If you’re worried this may happen to you, rest assured no-one from Voice magazines will try and take a cash deposit for any booking. We will only ask for payment when the artwork for the advert has been agreed and the booking has been confirmed and we will always provide an invoice. However, if you still aren’t sure, call us on any of the numbers below and we’ll be able to confirm. Happy Reading,

Hosted by radio DJ Ken Bruce, the awards took place at the spectacular National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh and featured a performance by the world-famous Red Hot Chilli Pipers. Paul Fenwick, director of Wilkinson Bros, said: This is a fantastic achievement for us at Wilkinson Bros, we are a third-generation family run business and we work hard to help those in need at such a difficult time and it’s nice to have recognition for our efforts and shows we are doing things right.

Golden Charter CEO Suzanne Grahame said: “The respected and caring work of independent funeral directors within their local communities often goes unrecognised and so it gives me great pleasure to congratulate the team at Wilkinson Bros for their tremendous achievement in winning this award. “The award recognises the excellent service the team from Wilkinson Bros has delivered to their local community, by helping individuals through the funeral plan process and supporting families when they need it the most.”
Funeral Plans are becoming a very popular choice for people now and we always tailor all our plans to an individual’s needs and wishes, which allows people to have what they want and keeps costs down for them in an 15/03/2018 17:44

So, we are here again at the start of a brand-new year. This is the time when we make resolutions to decide what we are going to make happen, what we are going to give up, what we are going to do more of. We think about getting fit, planning adventures and talking about the future and we always set out to achieve them, so 2019 should be no different.
Peoples idea of a holiday have changed a lot over the past few years, it’s not all about a week on a beach now, it’s about making different memories, having one-off adventures, doing things you never dreamed of. It’s seeing exciting parts of the world you have seen on TV; when they are being shown to you by Joanna Lumley or Jane Macdonald it really does whet the appetite. The world is a big place and we want to explore it all! Whatever floats your boat, I’m sure I can help. For example, the ski season is in full swing, but there is still time to get out on the slopes. If it’s sunshine you are craving right now then the Caribbean is the place for you. If you are planning your summer escape then the world is your oyster, the Mediterranean is a great bet, but do keep in mind the places that are a bit further away. Did you know Mauritius is a great place to visit and is comparable pricewise to the Med in the peak summer months? City breaks continue to be very popular all year round as more flights from local airports make it easier to take that short trip to recharge the batteries. Or alternatively do you have big bucket list adventures in mind? Swimming with the sharks in Australia, visiting the Taj Mahal, walking the Great Wall of China, shopping in the souks of Dubai, visiting a tea plantation in Sri Lanka, joining the Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans, or watching the world go by at a street café in Barcelona, whatever you dream of for your holiday in 2019 it can be done. I am available 7 days a week to take your enquiries and 24/7 whilst you are away in the event of an emergency. Book Review
Philip Pullman writes books which take you to another place. Pick up La Belle Sauvage, prepare to be transported. Fans of Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy will dive back into a familiar world which is like our own in so many ways but deliciously and addictively different. Newcomers will find themselves immersed in a universe which ignores rules and opens up the bounds of possibility. Malcolm Polstead is a young lad whose parents run a pub in Oxford. His life is very ordinary and he’s at his happiest messing about in his canoe with his daemon Asta. Ah, the incredible daemons! Once you’ve read about daemons you really, really want one. Every human in these books has a daemon – an animal soulmate which is bonded to them physically, emotionally, and mentally and which provides love and guidance and a best friend in one entity. Malcolm’s humdrummery changes when it starts to rain. And rain. And rain. And Malcolm takes on the challenge of his young life. This is super-charged storytelling, a feast of entertainment and beautifully written.

Rambles with Rafa Despite the inclement weather we get at this time of year it is still good to get out for a small walk somewhere new. I know our doggies appreciate the change in scenery! So, if your furry friends are anything like ours this walk should be perfect. As always, a big thank you goes out to David from JH legal. The walk begins and ends at the Kings Mill Reservoir. It’s a place I have passed in the car many times but never been too. There is a good-sized car park and the path around the reservoir is perfect base for a quick walk. We then join the Timberland Trail which winds through to the small but pleasant Oakham Nature Reserve. From here we pick up a path alongside the River Maun as it winds back towards the reservoir.
3 1/2 mile circular walk from King’s Mill Reservoir
A short walk which should take you and your dog around 2 hours to complete. The walk features a number of roads so please take care. There majority of the walk is on trails but please wear appropriate footwear and as always, please follow the countryside code.
START: Kingsmill Reservoir Sailing Club Car Park, Reservoir Access Road Sutton in Ashfield. NG17 4PA 1. From the car park head directly towards the reservoir and a large notice board. Upon reaching a T junction of tarmac paths with the notice board directly in front of you, turn right along the tarmac path with the reservoir on your left. After a short distance you will pass by a sign on your right reading ‘visitor centre’ and then a little further on pass by the visitor centre on your right. 2. Continue straight along the tarmac path keeping the reservoir on your left and pass by 2 metal gates. Upon passing a 3rd metal gate with a height restrictor above, continue to cross straight over a bridge and then turn immediately right onto a signposted bridleway. 3. Walk along the bridleway and then upon reaching a bungalow in front of you bear around to the right. After a short distance pass through a metal swing gate, cross over a railway line, pass through a 2nd swing gate and turn immediately right. After a very short distance ignore a path turning sharp left and continue straight ahead along a footpath signposted for Clipstone. 4. Keep on this path until reaching a road. Cross straight over the road, pass by a signboard reading ‘Timberland Trail’, and then continue straight ahead along a path. Continue until reaching another road. Cross straight over the road pass by another sign board on your left and continue straight ahead along a footpath. 5. Continue along the path for some distance and then pass by a metal gate. keep straight ahead for a short distance. Now continue with a stone wall on your left, pass by another gate and then a house on your left. Walk gently downhill and then at the bottom of the hill, turn left through a metal width restrictor adjacent to a large metal gate onto a well laid footpath. 6. Walk straight ahead going gently uphill. At the top continue along the footpath into some trees and then descend sharply down some steps heading directly towards a lake. Turn left just in front of the lake to walk along the path until reaching a road. Turn left along the road for a very short distance and then turn right, pass through a width restrictor and along a footpath. 7. After a short distance follow the footpath to the right and then a little further on follow the path to the left. Continue for a short distance and then turn right to cross over a river bridge. After crossing the bridge turn immediately left and then continue with the river on your left. 8. Continue straight ahead to join up with a tarmac path and then continue with a tall metal fence on your right. Keep straight ahead until reaching a road. Turn left along the road for a very short distance crossing a river
and then turn right to pass through a chicane and onto a footpath. 9. Walk along a tarmac path with the river on your right. Pass by a fishing lake on your right and then after some distance you will continue with a chain link fence and a railway line on your right. When the chain link fence on your right ends turn sharp right to double back on yourself and then pass through a swing gate, cross over the railway line to pass through a 2nd swing gate. 10. Continue straight ahead for a short distance and then follow the path around to the left signposted for ‘Sutton in Ashfield’. After a short distance cross over a bridge and then upon reaching a stone wall directly in front of you turn right. Now continue with a stone wall and a reservoir on your left. 11. After a short distance bear slightly to the left to continue along a footpath staying close to the stone wall and passing by a notice board on your left. Continue along this path for quite some distance staying close to the reservoir on your left. Eventually you will join up with a tarmac path. Continue straight ahead until reaching a T junction of tarmac paths. Turn left, cross over a bridge, and continue with the reservoir on your left. 12. After some distance pass by a wooden gate and then a little further on pass by Sutton Sailing Club on your right. Continue until reaching the car park on your right.

I can live with other dogs of a similar size and temperament and would prefer a home with company. I have quite an active mind and like to be busy with my friends whether it be people, dogs or children! If you think you could offer me my forever home, please contact the Notts team on 01623792886. Hello greyhound lovers! My name is Thunder, and I am as fast as lightening when I run around....but don’t be fooled because I equally love sleeping on the sofa for most of the day, its a myth that we need lots of exercise ;-)! I do enjoy human attention, and playing with my toys :) I could live with another dog of similar size and temperament as I love following my canine friends round and having zoomies together. I would love a home with company and can live with humans aged 16+. I do need someone to show me the joys of home life now I’m retired from the racing track, but I am a quick learner! To come and say hello, call the Notts team on 01623792886. Love and zooms, Thunder x

Mike’s Musings
Decorators Of Distinction

I think Mike has set a dangerous precedent here. If he’s not careful he will be inundated with the gripes and grumbles of the local populace. But isn’t that a politician’s lot – Afterall, with great power comes great culpability!

Improving Quality of Life (Part 4) Back in October, as I’m sure you’ll remember, George, UCIP’s People’s Champion, had just suffered a bit of ‘ear chewing’ from a bloke from Jacksdale who had, to put it mildly, a bit of a chip on his shoulder. He was the guy who argued that it was time for all those women who, in his words, constantly carped on about having to wait until they reached the same age as men before becoming entitled to a state pension. He just wanted them to stop whinging. Well, the reaction has, perhaps unexpectedly, been mixed with a number of ladies wanting to find out exactly where this bloke lived in Jacksdale so that they could go and give him a bit of ‘what’s for’. On the other hand, a number of men have praised this unknown gent for having the guts – not sure about that as he was not brave enough to say anything in front of the ladies at Alfreton Bus Station and he did of course venture his views under the cloak of anonymity! – to say what they themselves were too timid to. One indirect impact has been a wide and varied response giving an important insight into, if the truth be known, the trivialities of life that really get under the skin of both men and women. Here are some examples:1 – One lady got in touch to say that she laughs inwardly every time she sees a grown man who, as she kindly put it, has seen better days in terms of his shape, wearing a replica football shirt masquerading as if he’s still a fit and virile youth in his prime.
30
2 - Continuing on a footballing theme, Roger from Riddings has said that’s he’s sick to death of commentators referring to e.g. Frank Lampard’s Derby County, Harry Kewell’s Notts County etc. As he correctly points out, both of these famous football clubs were amongst the twelve founder members of the Football League in 1888, long before Frank and Harry were even a twinkle in their great grandad’s eye. These and other clubs existed long before the current highly paid managers came on the scene and will still be there long after they’ve gone. The clubs do not belong to the manager! 3 An anonymous correspondent from Broadmeadows Estate has said that something ought to be done about people over a certain age enjoying drinks from the likes of McDonalds – that infamous supplier of approximately 30% of all anti-socially discarded waste found on the streets of our district! – whilst out in public. What really seems to annoy him/ her is the fact that these otherwise mature individuals are drinking through straws just like kids. “Don’t they realise how childish they look?” he/she argues. Now, like me (& George), you’re probably wondering what all this has got to do with improving the quality of life? We’ve got no immediate answer – although George is working on it – other than to say it seems to illustrate that the apocryphal ‘concerned of Tunbridge Wells’, clearly lives on and has morphed into ‘Bellyacher from Bolsover’. More bellyaches next month? You bet – there’s more from where these came from!

Gardener’s Calendar - January 2019 Not the busiest of times in the garden but there are still some jobs to get you outside Rose bushes can be pruned to just above a bud. It’s also a good time to take ornamental grasses back to ground level, cutting foliage to a few centimetres above the soil. Sedums also appreciate a haircut at this time of year. Cut back old stems but be careful not to take new growth. And dead-head your winter pansies to stop them setting seed and thinking their flowering days are done.

Hellebores are one of the much appreciated outside plants at this time of year and into spring. But the flowers are produced low to the ground so cut back old leaves to expose them as they come through. Indoor plants come into their own at this time of the year, but central heating can be a bit stressful for them so try misting them – small sprays are cheap and simple.

No More Ladders So, was 2018 a vintage year for English football or just a flash in the pan? Is Gareth SouthFascias gate building something special or has he just been lucky, with kind draws and below par Soffits opposition? Most of us have an opinion and luckily for us one of those is our Barry… At the end of 2018 it’s time to reflect on the international year that has been one to remember. One question I’ve seen banded around over recent weeks, has seen many asking whether this has been the most fruitful for England since 1966 – when the nation conquered the world thanks to the likes of Moore and Charlton. I tend not to like comparisons for the most part, simply because there’s so many different factors to consider which impacts upon each generation – firmly believing we should just appreciate what we have now, and what we had then. Is Lionel Messi the best ever, for example – I mean, Stanley Matthews, George Best, Pele, Diego Maradona, John Robertson, Cristiano Ronaldo, you know, there’s plenty that deserve to lay claim to that accolade. So, to compare England’s year to the one when they won the World Cup in 1966 is a tough one and probably a tad unfair/unrealistic. What I would say, first and foremost, is that they’ve made us believe again. I wrote before the World Cup that all I wanted to see was a team representing our country which we could be proud of, one that enjoyed the phenomenal privilege that comes with playing in such a tournament. They did just that, and then some. The World Cup was a joy to watch, it was one we all invested so much into and almost ended in glory – and not only did it give us memories
36
to last a lifetime, more importantly, it gave those players something few will ever get to experience – and we won a penalty shoot-out before going further than the Germans! Then, if you thought the competition was a flash in the pan, Gareth Southgate – who has been an absolute treasure in the way in which he’s revitalised the national team setup, masterminded a winning Nations League campaign. Like many, I questioned the point of it when it was first announced, but rest assured, it didn’t take me long to fall in love with it, how could you not? The drama of that defeat to Spain at Wembley in September, the controversial, cruel nature of Danny Welbeck’s disallowed equaliser in stoppage time – followed by the stunning win in Seville just a few weeks later, ensured we all took it seriously. It meant something. Those performances full of drama and anticipation was followed by that incredible finish at Wembley last month when Harry Kane, arguably England’s player of the year – prodded home a late, late winner to gain some measure of revenge against Croatia to secure the group win. International football is often criticised, and in some cases, with just cause, but 2018 has been one we’ll never forget. Thank you, Gareth.
