Stephen Toon Hearing Care Your local independent Hearing Care Specialist THE BEST AIDS, THE BEST ADVICE AND THE BEST AFTERCARE AT THE BEST PRICES
Enjoying the simple things in life… How often do you tell yourself that you will be calm, content and happy when you have your dream job, live in your dream house, have your dream relationship or perhaps achieved your goal body image? Often we are so focussed on achieving in life that we take our attention away from all the lovely and wonderful little things in our lives that happen every day. We can be just as content taking a walk in the local park as we can be on a luxury yacht in the Bahamas! Really we can!
Putting pressure on ourselves to get that dream job/house/relationship/image can take us away from all the joy that is in our life RIGHT NOW! For so many of us we tend to live either in the past or the future focussing on things that have already happened or yet to happen and therefore missing out on really enjoying that simple cup of tea with a friend or taking a walk in nature. So this month I invite you take some time each day to enjoy a simple activity, enjoy the simplicity!

The time to enjoy is NOW. Happiness is not dependent on our life situation but our state of mind, so even in the most challenging life situation we can still find happiness and peace by enjoying the simple everyday things in life, cooking a nice meal, enjoying a cup of tea or chatting with a friend.

For most of us there will always be something in our life that is ‘challenging’ us so it is important that we enjoy our lives as they are right now even with its imperfections. And if you are lucky enough to have a point in your life when you do have the perfect home, job, relationships and health all at the same time then be grateful and enjoy it as things will keep changing, nothing ever stays the same.

Slimming World Recipe Spaghetti Carbonara If like me you love spaghetti carbonara but have found that cream and weight loss don’t go, why not give this Slimming World recipe a go as it uses fromage frais instead? Serves: 4
Method:
Ready in: 20 minutes
Syns per serving: ½ Syn
Local, Professional Veterinary Care Opening Hours
Ingredients:
Mon - Fri 08:30 – 19:00 Saturday 08:30 – 13:00
• 400g dried spaghetti
1. Cook the spaghetti according to the packet instructions. Drain well and return to the saucepan.
• Small handful of fresh chives, finely chopped
2. Meanwhile, heat a large non-stick frying pan over a high heat. Add the bacon and dry-fry for 2-3 minutes, then turn off the heat.
• 4 eggs
3. Lightly beat the eggs, season and stir in the fromage frais, 1 level tbsp Parmesan and most of the chives.
• 4 tbsp fat-free natural fromage frais
4. Add the bacon to the drained spaghetti and mix well over a low heat, then remove from the heat and stir in the egg mixture. Toss thoroughly so that the eggs thicken in the residual heat, making a sauce that coats the pasta.
• 6 back bacon rashers, visible fat removed, chopped (or Quorn bacon-style pieces)
5. Divide the spaghetti between 4 bowls, then divide over the remaining Parmesan and chives. Serve hot.
• 2 level tbsp grated fresh Parmesan

Book Review
Benjamin Myers’ novel Turning Blue takes us to the bleak and snowy moors of the Yorkshire Dales where a young woman goes missing. Please, not another missing-girl thriller, you may be thinking. And you’d be right. It isn’t. The girl in this story is the doorway into a much more complex and disturbing tale where tight lipped pillars of the community protect far more shocking secrets and grim hiding places. Somewhere even a national celebrity can go to ground. James Brindle, a misfit detective from the police’s national elite cold storage unit is sent to try and trace the girl. It’s Christmas, local bobbies are taking family time, the girl is the daughter of a local bigwig and it’s quiet in head office. So they send the man who has no friends or family to bother about. Also working on the case is burnt out red-top journalist Roddy Mace, attempting to dry out while earning a crust on the local paper. It’s not a happy combination, him and Jim Brindle but it fits perfectly with the tone of this compulsive story. It sounds a weird thing to say about a crime book but there’s a poetic feel to much of the writing. Myers inhabits the countryside and has a great ear for the way people think and talk. So it’s crime fiction, but it’s very very good crime fiction and it feels like serious reading. It’s an unsettling book and the sometimes startling descriptions stay with you for a long time. And if you get hooked, Myers has written other Mace and Brindle stories along with powerful historical fiction and poetry.

Gardener’s Calendar
Prune winter flowering shrubs such as forsythia and jasmine when the flowers have finished. If you take one third of the stems back to old wood it will encourage strong growth into next year. Also prune buddleia and wisteria now before the sap starts to rise. But don’t think about cutting back evergreens until next month. They need warmth to boost foliage into bud.
r
Re-pot protected overwintered perennials such as geraniums and fuchsias and take cuttings. Keep watered and warm until we’re safe from frost.
TOP TIP! Amaryllis have become one of the go-to plants for the lean winter months providing exuberant and exotic flowers at a time when we most need it. Lots of people then throw them way. Don’t. With a little care they will give an even better show next year. Slice the stem just above the bulb once it has faded back and keep feeding and watering. In early autumn put the bulb in a cool dark place for 2 months so it can go dormant. Then water again and it will re-shoot, ready for the winter season and hopefully bigger and better because the bulb will have grown.

View from the Allotment
At the moment the ground on allotments is quite hard from the current cold spell. The frost will improve soil structure and disrupt some pest and disease cycles but it will slow down growth of daffodils which are just starting to come up on our plot. Hopefully the frosts will reduce slug and aphid populations but these pests and their eggs are very tough. Some plot holders subscribe to the no digging idea and have covered their beds with well-rotted compost for worms and other soil life to take down to enrich the ground. February is the right time to prune last years’ autumn-fruiting raspberry canes. Summerfruiting raspberry canes that bore fruit should have been cut down to soil level last Autumn. But now I’m wondering how to prevent our local pigeons from getting a daily free takeaway meal on the kale and other greens on our plot. Crop rotation is worth practising to prevent build-up of club root and onion white rot and other pests. The RHS has a good web site describing three and four year crop rotation cycles. Potatoes should be rotated as they are heavy feeders and deplete the soil of nutrients. Seed potatoes should be set up for chitting now. My grandson Tom reminds me that children can enjoy helping on an allotment and he says it will it get them out into the fresh air and away from their computers, tablets, phones, etc, for a while. These territorial birds exhibit spectacular flying displays over breeding sites with individuals ‘tumbling’ from on high with wings closed, and doing high speed victory rolls. The ‘cronking’ call of the raven must rate amongst the most evocative natural sounds in the Peak District. Yet interactions between ravens and people have been rather mixed. On the one hand, if we leave aside parrots, this is probably
