Digital Aerials, Freesat and Sky Multipoint
Serves: 4
Ready in: 1hr 20 minutes
Syns per serving: Free
Method:
1. Put the onion, squash, cauliflower, celery and garlic in a medium saucepan and add the fish sauce, mustard powder and 400ml water. Bring to a simmer and cook for 20 minutes, or until tender. Remove from the heat and whizz until smooth with a stick blender. 2. Return to a gentle simmer, add the broccoli and cook for 5 minutes. Add the fish, prawns, peas, capers and parsley and simmer gently for 8-10 minutes, or until the fish is just cooked. Gently stir through lemon juice and seasoning to taste. 3. Meanwhile, make the mash. Put the sweet potatoes, cauliflower, potatoes and garlic in a saucepan of boiling water over a high heat. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 15 minutes or until tender. Drain well and mash. Stir through the quark and season with salt, pepper and nutmeg to taste. 4. Put the fish and sauce into an ovenproof dish, top with the mash and cook under a medium-high grill for 10 minutes. Serve hot with your favourite Speed vegetables.

Almost two-thirds of employed over-50s plan to retire later than they expected to 10 years ago, a report from Aviva has claimed.

The study of more than 2,497 adults suggested 63% of people over the age of 50 are willing to push back their retirement date to work longer. However, almost half (44%) of these older workers said their employers provide insuicient support when it comes to realising their career ambitions and objectives. The survey also found that 38% of those who planned to work longer were doing so because they had insuicient retirement savings. Aviva urged employers to provide more assistance in the form of lexible working and help with retirement planning, to avoid workers over the age of 50 becoming “disheartened and discouraged. Lindsey Rix, managing director of savings and retirement at Aviva, said:

Aviva’s research echoes the indings of a separate study from SunLife earlier in 2018. The SunLife report claimed two in ive people over the age of 55 worry about whether their pension will cover retirement, and 43% fear their savings will run out before they die. Both surveys suggest fewer people over the age of 55 are accessing their pension pots early following the launch of pension freedoms in 2015. The freedoms allow over-55s to take 25% of their pension pot as a tax-free lump sum with the rest taxed at their marginal rate of income tax. We can help plan your retirement savings.

Book Review
Rated GOOD by CQC
Belinda Bauer’s crime novel Rubbernecker takes you out of most people’s normal humdrum day-to-day world. Not to another planet, but to the minds of people living in a different place inside their heads. Sam is a man in a coma who believes he has watched a doctor deliberately killing the man in the bed next door to him, but of course can tell no-one about it. Patrick is an 18-year-old medical student with Asperger’s who finds other people and their emotions baffling, but ends upon the trail of a murder. And the nurse? Well she’s a self-centred, unpleasant mean cow whose eye is on the main chance rather than the welfare of her patients. This is a very unusual, quite dark, but also unexpectedly funny book, which won a crime book of the year for its author. Belinda Bauer did not start writing until she was in her 40s and was last year longlisted for the Booker Prize for a further crime novel - Snap – the first time crime genre has ever been considered for the prestigious literary prize. Anyway, she’s good. She says she doesn’t write crime novels, but books about people which have crimes in them and that’s a fair assessment and makes the books all the better for it. Rubbernecker is well written, has plenty of twists and is an intelligent and unsettling read.
There’s nothing like being recognised for the great work we do. But don’t just take our word for it, why not book a visit and find out why the Care Quality Commission rated us GOOD for yourself.

Rambles with Rafa This month we have picked a walk which I think is perfect for a winter ramble, making use of some of the paths and trials to the north of Derby’s city centre. Our thanks, again, go out to David from JH Legal, who keeps providing us with new and interesting walks, whatever the weather! We begin our walk in Darley Park, heading down the side of the river Derwent, before crossing the river and turning to head back up, alongside the Racecourse Park. From here we pick a section of the Great Northern Greenway, turning off before we reach Breadsall. We then cut across to meet up with the River Derwent again, before heading south to pass through the West Mill and back to where we began.
4 1/2 mile circular walk from Darley Park, Derby
A short walk which should take you and your dog around 2 hours to complete. There are a few sections of road so please take care. There majority of the walk is on paths and trails but please wear appropriate footwear and as always, please follow the countryside code.
START: Darley Park Car Park, Poplar Row, Derby. DE22 1DU 1. Standing with your back to the entrance cross the car park diagonal left passing some recycle bins on your left and taking the well laid footpath to pass behind the cricket club house. Follow the path with the river on your left for some distance and cross over a small wooden footbridge. 2. Continue ahead staying close to the river for some distance and eventually you will begin to pass houses raised up on a bank to your right. Eventually the footpath will turn into a road. Continue straight ahead to pass Derby Rowing Club and a small car park to your left. At this point keep left and take a tarmac footpath straight ahead of you keeping the river close on your left. 3. After a short distance, just before passing under a bridge, turn right. Then after a short distance turn left and up some steps. At the top of the steps turn left and cross over the bridge. At the other side of the bridge continue ahead and at the crossroad turn right, signposted for Allestree, Daley Abbey & Little Eaton. Follow the path keeping some industrial buildings on your right. 4. Continue until reaching a T junction with a road. Turn right and then immediately left to continue along ‘Chester Green Road’. Continue straight ahead with a row of houses on your left and a recreation area to your right until reaching a T junction with a main road. Cross over a zebra crossing in front of you and turn right along the main road. After a short distance take the 2nd left into Ceaser Street. 5. When the houses end and the road narrows continue straight ahead to pass beneath a bridge and walk on until reaching a main road. Cross straight over the road and then continue straight ahead along a footpath to pass through and underpass. Immediately after the underpass at a fork in the path bear to the left. After a very short distance at a crossroads of paths turn left again. Now continue along a footpath with playing fields on your right. 6. Continue straight ahead for some distance and then at a fork in the path bear right and continue to a main road. Cross over the road following a signpost for ‘Breadsall Hilltop’ and then continue along a tarmac footpath for some distance. 7. Eventually you will reach a road. Continue straight ahead along-side the road until reaching a T junction with another road and a pub directly opposite. Cross straight over this road, turn left to continue for a short distance along the road and then turn right through a width restrictor onto a footpath, keeping the pub on your right. 8. Continue along this footpath for some distance passing a signboard on your left reading ‘Great Northern Greenway’. After some distance, at a crossroads of footpaths, ignore the footpath on your right with a metal width restrictor and instead turn left through a gap in a fence along a footpath marked as cycle path ‘672’. Continue along this path going gently downhill until passing through a metal width restrictor and onto a road. Cross over and then turn left along the road. 9. Continue along the road for a short distance, then upon reaching some large stones on the right-hand side of the road turn right along a cycleway. After a short distance cross over a main road and pass through a metal swing gate to follow a footpath through some trees to cross a field.
10. After some distance on the footpath you will reach some steps. Climb the steps cross over a rail bridge. On the other side turn immediately to the right and then to the left to cross over a wooden footbridge. After the footbridge continue straight ahead across a field keeping a dyke on your left. Upon reaching a T junction with a lane turn left along keeping a river on your right. 11. After some distance pass through a large metal gate and continue ahead for a short distance until you have a fence in front of you. Bear left and continue with the fence on your right. Stay close to the fence for some distance, then shortly after the fence begins to curve to the right follow the footpath straight ahead peeling away from the fence as straight as possible. 12. Continue straight ahead until reaching a lane. Now continue along this lane with a fence on your left. When the lane bends to the right, continue straight staying close to the fence. When the fence ends keep straight ahead and pass over a stile adjacent to a large metal gate. Walk along a tarmac lane until reaching a road with ‘Haslams Rugby Club’ opposite. 13. Turn right along the road to pass a 2mph sign as you enter an old mill. Continue along the narrow road through the mill passing a ‘Toll £1’ sign and eventually cross over a river bridge with the weir on your left. 14. Immediately after crossing the bridge the road curls to the left. Follow the road around to the left and then when the road bends right take the first turning on your left into ‘Darley Street’. Continue along ‘Darley Street’ passing ‘Mill View Gardens’ on your left and then after a short distance turn left into ‘Poplar Row’ to continue back to the car park.
This walk is for illustrative purposes only. Voice Magazines takes no responsibility for anyone who chooses to follow this route and encourages all walkers to obey all byelaws and signs and to respect the area they are walking in, ensuring they pick up all dog mess and obey the countryside code at all times. Star - 2 Yrs 4 Mths - Female - German Shepherd Dog Are you looking for a little shadow? Because here I am! Hi everyone, I’m Star. I am a sweet girl with loads of love to give, but I am needing a very understanding, confident but kind human. I want to be your friend, but I get very nervous around new people, but once you have gained my trust, I will be your best friend FOR LIFE! A home where I will have company majority of the day would be perfect, I can live with another dog with a gentle introduction, but no little people for me please. If you think you could give me the time, patience and love, then please contact my friends at the Nottinghamshire centre.
Thunder - 4 Yrs 1 Mths - Male - Greyhound Hello greyhound lovers! My name is Thunder, and I am as fast as lightening when I run around....but don’t be fooled because I equally love sleeping on the sofa for most of the day, its a myth that we need lots of exercise ;-)! I do enjoy human attention, and playing with my toys :) I could live with another dog of similar size and temperament as I love following my canine friends round and having zoomies together. I would love a home with company and can live with humans aged 16+. I do need someone to show me the joys of home life now I’m retired from the racing track, but I am a quick learner! To come and say hello, call the Notts team on 01623792886. Love and zooms, Thunder x

I’d like to say this is literally the best column Mike has produced, but having read the column I’m not sure what that means anymore. The sentence has the same meaning if I leave the word literally out, so why does everyone use it so much. It may be literally the most overused word in the English language!

Improving Quality of Life (Part 5)
As you know, George, UCIP’s People’s Champion, has for some six months now, been carrying out research in an attempt to identify the issues that are seriously troubling the everyday man/woman of this country.
It may be putting it a bit strongly but he has been shocked at the degree of vitriol and outright venom in many of the comments he has received from fellow citizens. Forget Brexit, and all the discord this has created in our divided nation, George has uncovered a number of highly contentious and infuriating habits that risk pulling us even further apart. He is honest enough to admit that he doubts if UCIP can put an end to many (if indeed any) of these practices but at least he’s proved to be a good listener. Many of the problems he has heard, relate to abuse of the English language. Read on. Mary, from Leabrooks, wants an end to the phrase ‘going forward’. “What’s wrong,” she pleads “with the word next?” On a similar theme, Pauline from Swanwick is fed up hearing people use the phrase ‘get go’ as in ‘he was determined to come out on top from the get go.’ “Would ‘start’ not be better use of the language?” she asks. She went on to complain about the use of the phrase ‘at this moment in time’ when all that is required, she argues, is the word ‘now’. Jack, from Blackwell, has an issue with those people, particularly youngsters, who seem to have no understanding of the true meaning of the word

‘literally’. As an example, he told of how he had heard a conversation at the bus stop - he was waiting for a No 56 to Chesterfield - in which a young lady was describing a night out in Derby. “It was so cold” she said, “that I was literally frozen stiff.” Well, as Jack, and the rest of us know, if she had been literally frozen, she’d have been attending a funeral soon. Her own! “Why,” asked a lady at Alfreton Bus Station “is everyone described as being ‘rushed’ to hospital these days? This is done regardless of the circumstances. Surely, there must be at least a few occasions when someone is merely ‘taken’ to hospital.” Kev, from Westhouses, confessed to George that one phrase that really makes his blood boil, is when he hears those giving traffic updates on the radio say something along the lines of “There is currently a six mile tailback north of Tibshelf Services as a result of an accident that happened earlier.” “Of course it bxxxxy well happened earlier,” Kev fumes, “if it had happened later there wouldn’t be a problem right now!” Finally, Gary from Selston would just like all women to accept and acknowledge that any T-shirt, blouse, jersey or top that has a horizontally coloured pattern is classed as ‘hooped’ as opposed to ‘striped’. As he very reasonably points out, all football fans know that Celtic play in green & white hoops whilst Notts play in black and white stripes.

Gardener’s Calendar
This is still a bit early for major planting or seed growing. Seeds grown now may turn out a bit leggy and ultimately weak because of poorer daylight. Leave them till the days get longer and they’ll grow much faster and stronger. But you can plant lilies in pots, Keep indoors or in a cool greenhouse while they get away ready for outside growing when it’s a bit warmer. – Just remember they’re poisonous to cats! Lift and divide snowdrops once their flowers are over but they are still “in the green”, i.e. the green foliage hasn’t wilted yet. This will mean loads more flowers next year.
r
Maintenance this month includes trimming winter flowering heathers when they’ve flowered to stop them looking too scruffy and ending up with too much stem. Winter pansies will go well into spring if you keep dead heading them. Watch out for blackspot and mildew on pansies. Cut out affected leaves or even whole plants if badly damaged and bin or burn – don’t compost or you spread the problem. Try to avoid planting pansies in exactly the same spot next time as this increases the chance of disease. Turning to Alpines, make sure they’re fit for the coming season by removing dead leaves from around the base of plant to prevent rot.

TOP TIP!
You can start dahlia tubers into life a bit early by bringing them into a warm place and misting lightly to encourage growth. They can be potted into a pot inside or in a warm greenhouse once frost is past and the tubers have sprouted into growth.

Cooper’s Corner Follow Barry on Twitter @bazdjcooper Football writer at Trinity Mirror
So, there was big news as we were sending the magazine to print… no, not Brexit! Far more important that that, Nottingham Forest sacked Karanka. As another manager leaves the City Ground is it more of a surprise that this was not a surprise? So, after a little over 12 months, Aitor Karanka departs Nottingham Forest and the wider world sniggers at the latest managerial comings and goings at the City Ground. Having gone from perennial Championship strugglers in recent years, to a team with an enviable record against the division’s top teams, it looked like the large tanker stranded at sea was beginning to make a turn and head into somewhat calmer waters. All however, was not as it seemed. On the pitch, it looked like Forest were in good shape. A 3-3 draw at Norwich on Boxing Day wouldn’t ordinarily be cause for much concern, despite having been 3-0 - that collapse, coupled with some odd tactical decisions appeared to spark the decline. In truth, the problems had arisen long before the Canaries battled back to earn a point at Christmas time. Karanka’s relationship with the board had deteriorated and once that goes, as it did, the slope the Spaniard walked thereafter was always going to be a challenging one and one which proved impossible to correct. The thumping 4-2 win over Leeds on New Year’s Day did little to calm the rather choppy waters behind the scenes, and while the outpouring of emotion from the 30,000-capacity crowd on that afternoon showed the supporters to be behind their manager, the situation was fast becoming untenable within the corridors of power.
36
Unfortunately, because of the circus that went before the current ownership, the new regime will get tarnished with many suggesting things never change. That’s exactly the point, things are changing and have changed significantly. Owner Evangelos Marinakis wants promotion this season and feels, given the level of investment during the first half of the season (standing at £25m+), Forest should have been doing much better with the resources at Karanka’s disposal. At the time of his sacking, Karanka had the Reds sitting in seventh and just four points off a place in the top six. There were however, concerns about style of play, results against the so-called lesser teams and an unwillingness to change certain things and give promising prospects from the Nigel Doughty Academy more time on the pitch. While an overall record of 16 wins in 52 games, looks like a stat many would champion change at. Only time will tell if this decision made in early January proves to be the correct one, we’ll know that once the dust settles on the Championship table in May, but one thing is for sure, Nottingham Forest and their owners demand Premier League football and they want it sooner rather than later. It’s been 20 years since Forest, an icon of the English game, last graced the Premier League – the challenge remains to turn them into one again.
