What we can do for you:

Health & Wellbeing

Putting pressure on ourselves to get that dream job/house/relationship/image can take us away from all the joy that is in our life RIGHT NOW! For so many of us we tend to live either in the past or the future focussing on things that have already happened or yet to happen and therefore missing out on really enjoying that simple cup of tea with a friend or taking a walk in nature. So this month I invite you take some time each day to enjoy a simple activity, enjoy the simplicity!

The time to enjoy is NOW. Happiness is not dependent on our life situation but our state of mind, so even in the most challenging life situation we can still find happiness and peace by enjoying the simple everyday things in life, cooking a nice meal, enjoying a cup of tea or chatting with a friend.

For most of us there will always be something in our life that is ‘challenging’ us so it is important that we enjoy our lives as they are right now even with its imperfections. And if you are lucky enough to have a point in your life when you do have the perfect home, job, relationships and health all at the same time then be grateful and enjoy it as things will keep changing, nothing ever stays the same. e: Helen@yogapanacea.com | Health and Wellbeing with Helen |

-MedicineBe who you want to be…Look how you want to look…

Enjoying the simple things in life… How often do you tell yourself that you will be calm, content and happy when you have your dream job, live in your dream house, have your dream relationship or perhaps achieved your goal body image? Often we are so focussed on achieving in life that we take our attention away from all the lovely and wonderful little things in our lives that happen every day. We can be just as content taking a walk in the local park as we can be on a luxury yacht in the Bahamas! Really we can!

Slimming World Recipe Spaghetti Carbonara If like me you love spaghetti carbonara but have found that cream and weight loss don’t go, why not give this Slimming World recipe a go as it uses fromage frais instead? Serves: 4

Method:

Ready in: 20 minutes

Syns per serving: ½ Syn

Ingredients:

Must show voucher at time of purchase voucher valid until 31 March

• 400g dried spaghetti

1. Cook the spaghetti according to the packet instructions. Drain well and return to the saucepan.

• Small handful of fresh chives, finely chopped

2. Meanwhile, heat a large non-stick frying pan over a high heat. Add the bacon and dry-fry for 2-3 minutes, then turn off the heat.

• 4 eggs

3. Lightly beat the eggs, season and stir in the fromage frais, 1 level tbsp Parmesan and most of the chives.

• 4 tbsp fat-free natural fromage frais

4. Add the bacon to the drained spaghetti and mix well over a low heat, then remove from the heat and stir in the egg mixture. Toss thoroughly so that the eggs thicken in the residual heat, making a sauce that coats the pasta.

• 6 back bacon rashers, visible fat removed, chopped (or Quorn bacon-style pieces)

5. Divide the spaghetti between 4 bowls, then divide over the remaining Parmesan and chives. Serve hot.

• 2 level tbsp grated fresh Parmesan

Julie runs the family business with her sons in Sawmills. Whilst I sat in her kitchen, Julie spoke with such passion about her family business and how its grown from strength to strength over the years; delivering local fresh milk and local produce to local people within the local area each day, both to businesses and households, which her father and grandfather before her used to do. DKJ offer rounds in Alfreton, South Normanton, Ripley, Selston, Swanwick, Heage, Ambergate, Crich, Lea and Somercotes and if you’re passing by, fresh milk is also available to buy at their garage daily.

I was really chuffed when I found out about DKJ’s milk and local produce deliveries as I had been searching for a service like this for a while. I’ve heard nothing but good reports since they started advertising, so I thought why not let everyone else know a little bit more about it.

Book Review

Rated GOOD by CQC

Benjamin Myers’ novel Turning Blue takes us to the bleak and snowy moors of the Yorkshire Dales where a young woman goes missing. Please, not another missing-girl thriller, you may be thinking. And you’d be right. It isn’t. The girl in this story is the doorway into a much more complex and disturbing tale where tight lipped pillars of the community protect far more shocking secrets and grim hiding places. Somewhere even a national celebrity can go to ground. James Brindle, a misfit detective from the police’s national elite cold storage unit is sent to try and trace the girl. It’s Christmas, local bobbies are taking family time, the girl is the daughter of a local bigwig and it’s quiet in head office. So they send the man who has no friends or family to bother about. Also working on the case is burnt out red-top journalist Roddy Mace, attempting to dry out while earning a crust on the local paper. It’s not a happy combination, him and Jim Brindle but it fits perfectly with the tone of this compulsive story. It sounds a weird thing to say about a crime book but there’s a poetic feel to much of the writing. Myers inhabits the countryside and has a great ear for the way people think and talk. So it’s crime fiction, but it’s very very good crime fiction and it feels like serious reading. It’s an unsettling book and the sometimes startling descriptions stay with you for a long time. And if you get hooked, Myers has written other Mace and Brindle stories along with powerful historical fiction and poetry.

There’s nothing like being recognised for the great work we do. But don’t just take our word for it, why not book a visit and find out why the Care Quality Commission rated us GOOD for yourself.

Rambles with Rafa Apologies to anyone who got soggy feet on our Darley Abbey walk last month. There was some flooding of some of the paths. We do our best to make sure all the walks are appropriate and walk every walk ourselves at least a few months before they go to print but sometimes the weather gets the best of us!

Our thanks, again, go out to David from JH Legal, who keeps providing us with new and interesting walks, whatever the weather!

We walked this month’s walk in January so hopefully it shouldn’t’ have been affected by the weather. It begins at Ringwood Park and heads out past Ringwood Lake and through Westwood before passing through Brimmington Common and heading back across the lovely countryside back up towards Ringwood.

4-mile circular walk from Ringwood Park, Brimington, Chesterfield

A short walk which should take you and your dog around 2 hours to complete. There are a few sections of road so please take care. There majority of the walk is on paths and trails but please wear appropriate footwear and as always, please follow the countryside code.the countryside code.

Ringwood Park, Hollingwood. S43 (Car park entrance at junction of Chesterfield Road & Inkersall Green Road) 1. With your back to the car park entrance head straight to the far end of the car park and bear left to climb some steps. Continue with a fence on your right and then with a lake on your right. 2. Ignoring any paths to the left continue straight ahead staying close to the lake for some distance. Eventually you will reach a tall metal fence on your left. After a very short distance and where a smaller metal fence on your right begins, pass through a gap in the metal fence on your left and then continue with a metal fence on your right. 3. Walk through the woodland and the footpath will begin to climb. As the path levels off and you come out of the woodland continue with trees on your right and pasture on your left. After some distance follow the arrow on a marker post on your left back into woodland. 4. Cross over a wooden footbridge, climb some steps and then keep ahead to climb a 2nd set of steps. You will come to a major intersection of footpaths. Ignore the paths on the left and straight on and instead bear slightly right to take the footpath going down some steps. Continue down a 2nd set of steps and cross over a wooden footbridge over a steam. 5. Turn left and climb some steps, then continue ahead ignoring a path to the immediate left. After a short distance ignore a path with a steep drop back towards the stream, to your right and be sure to keep left staying close to a chain link fence on your left. 6. Upon reaching a split in the path, keep right passing a marker post on your left. Continue ahead for some distance along the same level passing 2 more maker posts on your left. 7. At a 4th marker post ignore the marked footpath going steep downhill to your right and continue straight ahead. A short distance after the marker post at a split in the path ignore the path to the left going uphill and keep right staying on a path that is relatively level. 8. After some distance follow the arrow on another marker post on your left and then a little further on pass another marker post on your left. After this marker post, ignore a path to the left and then continue before dropping steep downhill to cross over a bridge. 9. Walk uphill through woodland. Eventually the footpath levels, with a stream in the small gully on your left. The footpath begins to climb once more and you will pass a farm building on your right. Upon reaching a large metal gate directly in front of you, pass through a gap by the gate, ignore a marked footpath on your left and continue straight ahead onto a road. 10. 1Walk along the road and then take the 1st road on the right called ‘Brooke Drive’. Follow the road for some distance, then sharp around to the left to a T junction. Turn right along the road for a very short distance and then take the 1st road on the left called ‘Recreation Road’. 11. Walk along Recreation Road then keep ahead along a lane. At the end of the lane bear right of some double gates along a marked footpath with a hedge on your right and a wall on your left. 12. After a short distance pass through a metal chicane and to a T junction with a lane. Turn right along the lane and ignore a marked footpath on the left and continue ahead. After some distance you will come to 2 houses one on each side of the lane. Immediately after the house on the right, turn right along a signposted footpath with a wall on your right. 13. Enter a field and continue straight ahead with a hedge on your left. At the far side of the field pass through a gap in the trees.

Continue straight ahead across the centre of another field and at the far side pass through a gap adjacent to a large metal gate. Continue with a hedge on your right and a fence on your left for a short distance until reaching a main road. Turn right and continue for some distance, then immediately after number ‘151’ on the left turn left onto a lane with a hedge on both sides. Walk for some distance, past a telegraph pole on your left and several metal gates. Head gently downhill then immediately after passing beneath some power cables and just prior to entering some woodland turn left onto a footpath to pass by a pylon on your left. After a short distance follow the arrow on a marker post on your left and enter into the woodland. Follow the footpath for some distance to pass by 2 more marker posts on your right in quick succession. Cross over a stile and into a field with open views to your right. Continue for a short distance ignoring a marked footpath going uphill to your left, then drop steep downhill and cross over a footbridge. Climb up some steps and continue along the edge of another field with open views to the right, passing an aerial/ mast on your left. Just prior to reaching some houses turn right along the edge of the field with a hedge on your left. Near the bottom of the hill pass by a pylon on your left, and upon reaching a stone structure on your left, turn left to exit the field. Turn left along a lane and then right along a main road. Pass a bus shelter on your right. The road then begins downhill, after a short distance you will reach a large metal gate on your right. Pass through a gap adjacent to the metal gate Continue along a footpath going downhill to pass by a BMX track on your left and continue until you have a lake directly in front of you. At this point follow a tarmac path to keep the lake on your right going downhill and then cross over a bridge back into the car park.

Calling all Lurche r lovers...….we hav e the sweetest boy to introduce you to, ‘Jackson’ Jackson is 7 months old and loves everyo ne, he is a typical young Lurche r, very inquisitive and wants to learn about the world he lives in, the refore he is looking for a home that has time to invest in his ongoing sociali sation and basic tra ining. He would also love a hom e that is quite rural, where he cannot hear traffic noise because he doe s find this quite scary. He loves to zoomie aro und, so a large secure garden would be heaven for him. Jackson would benefit from living with well suited Doggy friends and children over the age of 14. BUILDING CONFIDENCE AT HOME

How many times have you said “I wish I’d had the confidence to do that when I was younger.” or “In hindsight, I could’ve done that in my teens, why didn’t I realise I was capable?” It can be so disheartening thinking of the things you could have done if only you’d had the confidence. In this month’s article we’re going to share a few tips on how to help your child build their confidence now.

Double glazing repairs including misted up glass units. Window and door hinges, locks, handles and general servicing. Fitting of windows, doors & conservatories.

20 Years experience

Build a confidence corner A ‘Confidence Corner’, can either be in their bedroom or an area of a shared room where all the memories and mementoes of things we’re proud of achieving are stored. This area can be used for your child to reflect on their brilliance and a place to recharge confidence when needed. Model confidence You are your child’s first confidence role model. If your child is watching you doubt and question everything you do, they’re going to do the same. I know sometimes it can be tough, after all we often still feel like kids in a grown-up body but you need to show the way. If you have events in your past that are stopping you from being as confident as you’d like, then invest in yourself and get some help to remove those blocks.

Time to explore & reflect

•Professional home design & fitting service

Give your child time to explore and reflect on their activities and accomplishments. All too often, either due to time constraints or a desire to help we move our children through an activity far too quickly. Remember you have a wealth of knowledge and experience on your side, something they have not yet developed. So, if you see your child struggling with something, hold back, let them figure it out. We need them to understand that confidence comes from exploring and being challenged, not from the end result.

•Free quotes & 3D computer design

Mike’s Musings We did try warning Mike and George what that they we’re opening themselves up for with this strange idea of ‘listening to the public’. Well it seems to have taken its toll on poor George. So, if you spot a scared looking man walking around shaking his head and muttering to himself, please send him home, but be careful, he startles easily.

Improving Quality of Life (Part 6) George, UCIP’s People’s Champion, has had to go away for a short while. His location is a closely guarded secret but rumours circulating the district that he ‘has just had it up to here’ with people coming up to him with the most bizarre suggestions as to how to make this world a better place, are sadly.................................true!

carry out this task, be an astute career move. They will not necessarily have to know what they’re talking about as current high profile holders of such jobs have consistently proved. Besides, as it is estimated that by the year 2025, 85% of TV programmes will feature some form of baking competition, employment prospects would be secure.

The final straw came when he was in The George & Dragon the other week, enjoying a quiet pint with his missus, when a bloke came up to him. “Hello there. I reckon you must be the famous George who is looking for ideas to make things better for the masses. Well, here’s a few suggestions for UCIP to consider. They’re new occupations to help combat the loss of traditional roles through increased computerisation.”

Gender Inventors will probably be part of a growth industry in the 21st Century. Society is gradually moving towards a situation where boys will no longer be encouraged to be boys and girls no longer girls. Instead, we are supposed to ask them at the earliest opportunity what they really want to be. Accordingly we need people to come up with suitable names to describe whatever it is our little mites decide. For those with a creative understanding of the various gender fluidity options, a profitable career would undoubtedly beckon.

George took a sip from his pint and settled back as the guy explained how:Jeans Rippers could start a business to help those wearing denim to have the ideal number of slashes in their casual trousers to demonstrate to the world just how fashionable they are. Tattoo Removers could benefit from the number of people who have had something hideous etched onto their skin. As this is often carried out whilst under the influence of something, it is only when the ‘victim’ discovers exactly what they’ve had done, that they become embarrassed and regretful. Those who offer a quick, painless and confidential removal service would make a good living. Becoming a Bakery Show Judge could, given the high number of people who are presently well paid to

46

Pothole Fillers will be in ever greater demand. As the country has been spending millions of taxpayers’ money in an increasingly desperate attempt to try to leave the European Union, the state of the Nation’s roads has continued to deteriorate. Teams of specialists, using a composite filling comprising the kind of rubbish that we’re never quite sure into which colour of bin it should go, could work through the night to alleviate the problem. At this point, George’s missus gave him a nudge and silently mouthed “Let’s get out of here.” George has not been seen in public since but we are hopeful of having an update in April.

At the moment the ground on allotments is quite hard from the current cold spell. The frost will improve soil structure and disrupt some pest and disease cycles but it will slow down growth of daffodils which are just starting to come up on our plot. Hopefully the frosts will reduce slug and aphid populations but these pests and their eggs are very tough. Some plot holders subscribe to the no digging idea and have covered their beds with well-rotted compost for worms and other soil life to take down to enrich the ground. February is the right time to prune last years’ autumn-fruiting raspberry canes. Summer-fruiting raspberry canes that bore fruit should have been cut down to soil level last Autumn. But now I’m wondering how to prevent our local pigeons from getting a daily free takeaway meal on the kale and other greens on our plot. Crop rotation is worth practising to prevent build-up of club root and onion white rot and other pests. The RHS has a good web site describing three and four year crop rotation cycles. Potatoes should be rotated as they are heavy feeders and deplete the soil of nutrients. Seed potatoes should be set up for chitting now. My grandson Tom reminds me that children can enjoy helping on an allotment and he says it will it get them out into the fresh air and away from their computers, tablets, phones, etc, for a while. A few full and half plots are still available at the Leabrooks (Bridle Lane) allotment Association (call Mick on 07725402033 for information). The committee has invested in a wheeled brush cutter to help clear vacant plots and is offering 50% off the rent for the first year. Prune winter flowering shrubs such as forsythia and jasmine when the flowers have finished. If you take one third of the stems back to old wood it will encourage strong growth into next year. Also prune buddleia and wisteria now before the sap starts to rise. But don’t think about cutting back evergreens until next month. They need warmth to boost foliage into bud.

Re-pot protected overwintered perennials such as geraniums and fuchsias and take cuttings. Keep watered and warm until we’re safe from frost.

TOP TIP! Amaryllis have become one of the go-to plants for the lean winter months providing exuberant and exotic flowers at a time when we most need it. Lots of people then throw them way. Don’t. With a little care they will give an even better show next year. Slice the stem just above the bulb once it has faded back and keep feeding and watering. In early autumn put the bulb in a cool dark place for 2 months so it can go dormant. Then water again and it will re-shoot, ready for the winter season and hopefully bigger and better because the bulb will have grown.

Our Barry takes on a ‘sensitive’ area this month, with his usual delicate touch.
