Slimming World Recipe Spaghetti Carbonara If like me you love spaghetti carbonara but have found that cream and weight loss don’t go, why not give this Slimming World recipe a go as it uses fromage frais instead? Serves: 4

Method:

Ready in: 20 minutes

Syns per serving: ½ Syn

Ingredients: • 400g dried spaghetti

1. Cook the spaghetti according to the packet instructions. Drain well and return to the saucepan.

• Small handful of fresh chives, finely chopped

2. Meanwhile, heat a large non-stick frying pan over a high heat. Add the bacon and dry-fry for 2-3 minutes, then turn off the heat.

• 4 eggs

3. Lightly beat the eggs, season and stir in the fromage frais, 1 level tbsp Parmesan and most of the chives.

• 4 tbsp fat-free natural fromage frais

4. Add the bacon to the drained spaghetti and mix well over a low heat, then remove from the heat and stir in the egg mixture. Toss thoroughly so that the eggs thicken in the residual heat, making a sauce that coats the pasta.

• 6 back bacon rashers, visible fat removed, chopped (or Quorn bacon-style pieces)

5. Divide the spaghetti between 4 bowls, then divide over the remaining Parmesan and chives. Serve hot.

• 2 level tbsp grated fresh Parmesan

VOICE RECOMMENDS - DKJ LTD

Voice Recommends - DKJ Ltd MILK DELIVERIES TO YOUR DOOR

I was really chuffed when I found out about DKJ’s milk and local produce deliveries as I had been searching for a service like this for a while. I’ve heard nothing but good reports since they started advertising, so I thought why not let everyone else know a little bit more about it. Julie runs the family business with her sons in Sawmills. Whilst I sat in her kitchen, Julie spoke with such passion about her family business and how its grown from strength to strength over the years; delivering local fresh milk and local produce to local people within the local area each day, both to businesses and households, which her father and grandfather before her used to do. DKJ offer rounds in Alfreton, South Normanton, Ripley, Selston, Swanwick, Heage, Ambergate, Crich, Lea and Somercotes and if you’re passing by, fresh milk is also available to buy at their garage daily.

Since Julie has been at Sawmills she’s made many changes, bringing the garage into modern times, with new equipment and bringing the garage up to standard and offering many modern-day services includinggeneral garage services, repairs, diagnostics, DPF maintenance, air conditioning repairs and regassing, to name a few. Julie is a lovely lady, nothing ever seems to much trouble for her and her family, they go above and beyond for her customers. So, if you need help with your car or you’re interested in milk deliveries give them a call, they will be only to happy to assist.

Pension options for over 55- 's What alternatives do you have at retirement?

Raiding your pension before retirement remains a popular option, with more than 1.3 million savers taking flexible payments from their pensions in the three years since 2015. While the premise of withdrawing 25% of your pension pot tax-free is nothing new, the options you have when you reach the age of 55 have increased. If you're considering taking money out of your pension pot, you've got lots to weigh up, but first of all you need to know what type of pension you have.

Pension types

Pensions usually fall into two different types: occupational or private schemes. Private pensions, such as a stakeholder pension, personal pension or self invested personal pension (SIPP), are money purchase schemes. Occupational pension schemes are further divided into defined contribution and defined benefit schemes - but pension freedoms only apply to defined contribution pensions. Defined benefit pensions - also known as final salary pensions - are seen as the Rolls Royce of pensions as what you receive depends on your earnings when you retire and is not dependent upon investment performance and growth. They are set up by your employer and provide you with a percentage of your final salary at retirement. While final salary pensions do not qualify for pension freedoms, it is possible to convert them into a pot of cash - but beware this is area targeted by scammers and is a high-risk strategy as you will be giving up valuable guarantees. Pension freedoms also do not apply to your state pension.

Options at 55 Leave it untouched

Continuing to save into your pension until the time comes to retire is the default position for most retirement savers in the UK. You can contribute up to £40,000 of your annual earnings towards your pension pot in 2018/19 without paying tax, subject to taper rules which may apply to high earners and which reduce the annual allowance. This cap remains in place for 2019/20 at the time of writing. Doing nothing is usually the best option unless you need the money for something in particular, whether that's to pay off your mortgage or help your grown-up child get on to the property ladder.

Withdraw everything If you did take this extreme step, the first 25% of your retirement savings would be free from tax and the remaining 75% would be taxed at your marginal rate of income tax. This is still the case in 2018/19 - but be aware that doing so could nudge you into a higher income tax band and see you paying 40% as a higher-rate taxpayer or 45% as an additional-rate taxpayer.

pshireHill

Advice to complement your Lifestyle

Important information

Take several lump sums -

....

Another option is to take 25% of your pension pot tax-free and leave the other 75% exactly where it is, continuing to grow as an investment into your existing pensions. Whether you pay income tax on taking several lump sums depends on your total annual income in any financial year and the personal allowance. You could withdraw up to £11,850 from your pension pot in 2018/19 without paying income tax on your withdrawals so long as you have received no other income in the tax year. Any amount over this threshold will be taxed at your marginal rate of income tax. This may be useful if you want to stagger your withdrawals over a period of time, such as to the point at which you retire.

Lump sum and drawdown

You could opt to take 25% tax-free after reaching the age of 55, and use the rest to buy a flexible income drawdown product. As this is an investment, you should be aware that the value of your product can rise and fall at any time and you should accept the element of risk involved.

Lump sum and an annuity

Buying an annuity works in a similar way to buying a flexible income drawdown product in that you can withdraw 25% of your pension pot without paying tax and purchase an annuity with the rest. The concept of buying an annuity is sound as they usually pay you a fixed annual income up until you die, but they have fallen out of favour with retirement savers in recent years. If the idea of having a fixed annual income for the rest of your life appeals to you, be sure to shop around for the best annuity rates.

Mix and match

It's possible to consider mixing and matching your pension options, such as using some of your pension pot to buy a flexible income drawdown product and some to purchase an annuity. Various other combinations are available but be sure to seek professional advice before doing so as this is by far the most complex option.

Seek help with your decision

When the time comes to retire, what you do with your pension savings is one of the most important decisions you will make as it will affect the rest of your life. The Government offers free guidance for over-50s through its Pension Wise initiative, which was introduced after the pension freedoms were brought in. However, the guidance merely outlines your options in a similar way to this brief guide and you should speak to our experts for tailor-made advice to suit your situation. Professional advice is also compulsory if you want to transfer defined benefit or safeguarded benefits worth £30,000 or more.

Rambles with Rafa Apologies to anyone who got soggy feet on our Darley Abbey walk last month. There was some flooding of some of the paths. We do our best to make sure all the walks are appropriate and walk every walk ourselves at least a few months before they go to print but sometimes the weather gets the best of us!

Our thanks, again, go out to David from JH Legal, who keeps providing us with new and interesting walks, whatever the weather!

We walked this month’s walk in January so hopefully it shouldn’t’ have been affected by the weather. It begins at Ringwood Park and heads out past Ringwood Lake and through Westwood before passing through Brimmington Common and heading back across the lovely countryside back up towards Ringwood.

4-mile circular walk from Ringwood Park, Brimington, Chesterfield

A short walk which should take you and your dog around 2 hours to complete. There are a few sections of road so please take care. There majority of the walk is on paths and trails but please wear appropriate footwear and as always, please follow the countryside code.the countryside code.

Book Review

Benjamin Myers’ novel Turning Blue takes us to the bleak and snowy moors of the Yorkshire Dales where a young woman goes missing. Please, not another missing-girl thriller, you may be thinking. And you’d be right. It isn’t. The girl in this story is the doorway into a much more complex and disturbing tale where tight lipped pillars of the community protect far more shocking secrets and grim hiding places. Somewhere even a national celebrity can go to ground. James Brindle, a misfit detective from the police’s national elite cold storage unit is sent to try and trace the girl. It’s Christmas, local bobbies are taking family time, the girl is the daughter of a local bigwig and it’s quiet in head office. So they send the man who has no friends or family to bother about. Also working on the case is burnt out red-top journalist Roddy Mace, attempting to dry out while earning a crust on the local paper. It’s not a happy combination, him and Jim Brindle but it fits perfectly with the tone of this compulsive story. It sounds a weird thing to say about a crime book but there’s a poetic feel to much of the writing. Myers inhabits the countryside and has a great ear for the way people think and talk. So it’s crime fiction, but it’s very very good crime fiction and it feels like serious reading. It’s an unsettling book and the sometimes startling descriptions stay with you for a long time. And if you get hooked, Myers has written other Mace and Brindle stories along with powerful historical fiction and poetry.

Mike’s Musings We did try warning Mike and George what that they we’re opening themselves up for with this strange idea of ‘listening to the public’. Well it seems to have taken its toll on poor George. So, if you spot a scared looking man walking around shaking his head and muttering to himself, please send him home, but be careful, he startles easily.

Improving Quality of Life (Part 6) George, UCIP’s People’s Champion, has had to go away for a short while. His location is a closely guarded secret but rumours circulating the district that he ‘has just had it up to here’ with people coming up to him with the most bizarre suggestions as to how to make this world a better place, are sadly.................................true!

carry out this task, be an astute career move. They will not necessarily have to know what they’re talking about as current high profile holders of such jobs have consistently proved. Besides, as it is estimated that by the year 2025, 85% of TV programmes will feature some form of baking competition, employment prospects would be secure.

The final straw came when he was in The George & Dragon the other week, enjoying a quiet pint with his missus, when a bloke came up to him. “Hello there. I reckon you must be the famous George who is looking for ideas to make things better for the masses. Well, here’s a few suggestions for UCIP to consider. They’re new occupations to help combat the loss of traditional roles through increased computerisation.”

Gender Inventors will probably be part of a growth industry in the 21st Century. Society is gradually moving towards a situation where boys will no longer be encouraged to be boys and girls no longer girls. Instead, we are supposed to ask them at the earliest opportunity what they really want to be. Accordingly we need people to come up with suitable names to describe whatever it is our little mites decide. For those with a creative understanding of the various gender fluidity options, a profitable career would undoubtedly beckon.

George took a sip from his pint and settled back as the guy explained how:Jeans Rippers could start a business to help those wearing denim to have the ideal number of slashes in their casual trousers to demonstrate to the world just how fashionable they are. Tattoo Removers could benefit from the number of people who have had something hideous etched onto their skin. As this is often carried out whilst under the influence of something, it is only when the ‘victim’ discovers exactly what they’ve had done, that they become embarrassed and regretful. Those who offer a quick, painless and confidential removal service would make a good living. Becoming a Bakery Show Judge could, given the high number of people who are presently well paid to

32

Pothole Fillers will be in ever greater demand. As the country has been spending millions of taxpayers’ money in an increasingly desperate attempt to try to leave the European Union, the state of the Nation’s roads has continued to deteriorate. Teams of specialists, using a composite filling comprising the kind of rubbish that we’re never quite sure into which colour of bin it should go, could work through the night to alleviate the problem. At this point, George’s missus gave him a nudge and silently mouthed “Let’s get out of here.” George has not been seen in public since but we are hopeful of having an update in April.

Gardener’s Calendar

Prune winter flowering shrubs such as forsythia and jasmine when the flowers have finished. If you take one third of the stems back to old wood it will encourage strong growth into next year. Also prune buddleia and wisteria now before the sap starts to rise. But don’t think about cutting back evergreens until next month. They need warmth to boost foliage into bud.

r

Re-pot protected overwintered perennials such as geraniums and fuchsias and take cuttings. Keep watered and warm until we’re safe from frost.

TOP TIP! Amaryllis have become one of the go-to plants for the lean winter months providing exuberant and exotic flowers at a time when we most need it. Lots of people then throw them way. Don’t. With a little care they will give an even better show next year. Slice the stem just above the bulb once it has faded back and keep feeding and watering. In early autumn put the bulb in a cool dark place for 2 months so it can go dormant. Then water again and it will re-shoot, ready for the winter season and hopefully bigger and better because the bulb will have grown.

Our Barry takes on a ‘sensitive’ area this month, with his usual delicate touch. Puns aside, it’s been a turbulent time at Notts County and although sometimes a little humour can ease a tricky situation, it’s probably not best when it’s at the club owners’ expense. Social media can be a difficult and dangerous place.
