Book Review
In the Woods by Tana French
Tana French writes books which are quite hard to categorize – and aren’t they always the good ones? The early stories focus around the Dublin Murder Squad, so - crime novel you’d think. But they’re much more complex than that, kind of literary psychological mystery tales, exceptionally good on the mystery, very tightly written and quite compulsive. A good place to start is the first Dublin story, In the Woods, which won numerous awards for this actor turned writer. It tells the tale of Adam Ryan, a 12-year-old Irish boy, found in a state of shock in woods, sitting with his back to a tree, and his shoes full of blood. His two friends, with whom he was playing, are never found. Move forward 20 years and Adam has changed name and identity to give himself a new life and is now a detective in Dublin, drawn by the romance and coolness of the job and perhaps by his childhood experiences. He seems a remarkably well adjusted chap, good at intense friendship. Then he starts investigating a recent child murder in the same place as the original disappearances. Tana French is brilliant at describing how people cope with things which go deep, when maybe you start to doubt your understanding of the world. And she’s very good at teasing out connections. She’s just published her seventh book – the first to break away from the Dublin series – to excellent reviews. In the woods is a captivating place to start. But if you like her style, there’s plenty more where it came from.

Last month I was lucky enough to be invited to the inaugural celebrations of the newest cruise ship and the largest ever to be named in the UK: MSC Bellissima, she really is ‘Beauty’ at sea. I had an early start as I wanted to see Bellissima sail into Southampton for the very first time! At 7am I joined the cruise ship spotters with their cameras poised to get the perfect shot of this beautiful new ship and it truly was a sight to behold. As I stepped onboard and into the fabulous infinity atrium it was lovely to be greeted by MSC UK. Being a specialist, I get invited to lots of launches of new ships and you always get the feeling that team are so proud of their ship and the MSC crew were no exception, they were so excited to have myself and the other cruise specialists onboard! I think this ship has the best of both worlds with plenty to do for families and couples and still caters for every age group. For the children in your life (big or small!) the Grand Canyon waterpark, full size bowling alley, TV bar as well as the kids clubs with Lego creations are great. For the truly big kids the F1 simulator is the ultimate adrenalin rush, not to be missed by fans. The rest of the entertainment comes in many forms onboard MSC Bellissima, but I think the biggest talking point has to be the two new Cirque Du Soleil shows in the specially designed Carousel Lounge. Syma is the story of a young sailor while Varelia is a medieval tale with futuristic highlights. Anyone who has seen Cirque Du Soleil will know how spectacular their shows are and this is even more true of the specifically designed stages. Onto the food, which is the bit you were all waiting for! Like all ships, food is an integral part of the cruising experience and with 12 bars and 20 restaurants Bellissima will not disappoint. My favourite is the chocolate bar by award winning chef Jean-Philippe Maury. It really is special. And of course, they have all the usual suspects of every type of food you could possibly imagine including sushi and tapas. As holiday makers become more tech savvy it’s amazing to see what MSC have come up with. The ‘MSC for ME’ app, which let me check-in has some great features, one that I feel will appeal to families specifically is that you can wear a wristband and see exactly where you are and more importantly see where your children are at all times. So, you can check what is happening onboard and navigate the ship with ease. AI has also made it into each cabin onboard in the form of ‘Zoe’. “Hey Zoe” wakes her up and then you can ask her a question about the ship or your cruise, where you are, timings of shows etc. It really does have the most up to date technology. So, if you enjoy a European style holiday with Italian chic, MSC could just be the next or the first cruise for you. With engaging itineraries and great offers throughout the year you really should take a look.

Grow Beans Grow Confidence
those diverse characteristics. “Everybody is a Genius. But If You Judge a Fish by Its Ability to Climb a Tree, It Will Live Its Whole Life Believing that It is Stupid.” - Albert Einstein Provide helpful feedback Are your beans growing in the right direction? Are they flourishing in a way that’s optimum for their future survival? If they’re not we put supports in place to help them correct their path. Supportive feedback to help a child modify their direction can also be extremely powerful. Instead of telling them what they’re not doing right, comment on the parts of an activity they’ve done really well and suggest ways to make their progress even better.
Spring fast approaching and here at NLP4Kids we’re starting to think about preparing plants and vegetables for the garden. One thing we’ve noticed over the last few years is how much of a similarity there is between growing plants and growing confidence. Here’s what I mean… Potting your beans When we first plant our beans they’re taken from a nice dry packet and thrust head first into into compost and soaked in water. That’s quite a change and a shock to their system. Often as adults we can forget our children do not have the same life experiences as us and they can find a significant change extremely daunting. Help your young ones by preparing them for change in advance, give them time to express concerns and ask questions. Developing roots and grounding Once our beans have settled they’ll start to develop roots to receive nutrients and provide stability. Due to the influence of technology in their world today, children spent a lot of time staring at a screen. Studies have shown, an average amount of screen time (5 hours per day) can lead to sensory overload, lack of restorative sleep, and a hyperaroused nervous system (which can create anxiety and panic). This can be counteracted by taking example from our beans and grounding. Any grounding style activity (yoga, mindfulness, physical grounding/ earthing) or simply spending time outdoors in nature each day can offset some of the damaging effects of screen time. Building on their own uniqueness As our beans grow, their differences become more apparent. Some will grow faster than others, some may need more attention and others may need more space and time to flourish. Due to our desire to generalise (because grouping things together is a much more efficient way of learning), we can forget to enjoy the things that make our children unique. Take time to celebrate and nurture
For more hints and tips on building confidence at home follow Debbie on facebook.com/NLP4KidsDerbyshire If you need any help in getting rid of your own confidence blocks or helping your child reach their true potential then Call me, Debbie Kinghorn on 07747 090871 or email DebbieK@NLP4Kids.org. 24 Don’t forget to mention Voice Magazines when responding to the Ads
Reaching for the sky We’ve helped our beans into their new environment, we’ve made sure they’re nicely grounded, we’ve celebrated their personal qualities and given them helpful feedback along the way. Now what? Now we want them to reach for the sky. Help them to explore opportunities, build confidence through new skills, support their big dreams and cheer them on as they take action. “First, think. Second, dream. Third, believe and finally dare” - Walt Disney.
Competition Time
In celebration of spring time, we’ re inviting you to join us in a competition. We’d like to see which of our young readers can gro w the biggest beanstalk. The rules of the competition can be found at: http://childther apyderbyshire. nlp4kids.org/Beancompetitio n2019 The parents of the competition winner will have the choice of either a FREE one to one session or a free place on the nex t NLP4Parents workshop. Our younger win ner will receive a £20 Amazon voucher.

trees on your right and open fields on your left. Keep ahead until the trees on your right end and then continue gently uphill along a lane with a hedge on your right and open fields on your left. After passing through a large gap from this field to the next you will immediately pass a large wooden gate on your right. Immediately after the wooden gate turn right to pass through a gap in the hedge to follow a signposted footpath. Continue along the edge of the field then after some distance turn 90 degrees left following a signposted footpath to cross an open field. Upon reaching a T junction with a lane turn right and then left to cross a footbridge and pass through a gap in a hedge. Keep ahead to cross an open field. At the far side cross over a stile onto a main road. Cross straight over the main road and then pass through a metal gate into a field. Continue straight, across an open field going gently uphill. At the far side pass through a metal gate and then continue along a lane. Pass 2 houses on your right then ignore the footpath ahead of you and follow the lane around to the left. Continue along the lane going downhill to a road. Turn right along the road and just after passing a 7.5t weight limit sign, turn left along a lane passing a signboard for ‘Hall Leys Farm’. Follow the lane as it bends sharp to the right then turn left along a signposted footpath to cross an open field. Pass through a gap in a hedge to cross another open field. At the far side of the field pass through a gap in the hedge to cross another open field. At at the far side of the field cross over a footbridge and pass through a gap onto a road. Cross the road to continue along a single-track road and signposted footpath, passing houses on both sides until reaching a T junction of roads. Turn right. The road turns into a lane and then narrows into a footpath and you will pass a wooden footbridge on your right. After the footbridge continue with a stream on your right for a short distance, then turn left through a gap, onto a footpath with trees on both sides. The trees on the right are replaced with a fence. After some distance follow the path sharp left, then sharp right and downhill. At the bottom continue with a fence on both sides, then follow the path sharp to the right to continue with a fence on the right and a hedge on the left. Upon reaching a large metal gate directly in front of you turn left through a small wooden gate, cross straight over a road and pass through a gap adjacent to a large wooden gate onto a lane. After some distance the lane turns into a footpath and eventually you will reach a main road. Turn right and after a short distance turn right along a lane and signposted bridleway. Pass through a small wooden gate adjacent to a large metal gate and continue along the lane. After some distance pass through a small wooden gate and back into the car park.

Over-50s are open to a transitional retirement Almost half of UK workers over the age of 50 would prefer to make a gradual transition towards retirement, research claims. Opinium polled 1,007 over-50s, all of whom earn more than £20,000 a year, and found that 49% would prefer to adjust the amount of time they work before giving up work altogether. More than two-thirds (70%) want to reduce the number of days they work each week, while 44% are keen to cut down the number of hours they work each day. The transitional approach was favoured among respondents in 11 of the UK’s 12 regions, while the North-East was the only exception with 34% of those polled favouring this option. Less than a third (31%) of respondents around the UK preferred the traditional option, where workers go from the usual work pattern to being fully retired in an instant.
Steve Cameron, pensions director at Aegon, said: “The concept of retirement is changing from traditional to transitional. As people enjoy longer life spans, they no longer yearn to down tools and start retirement in one fell swoop. “Over-50s in the UK see the appeal of gently easing of the amount of time they work or altering their working pattern. “Many see this as having the best of all worlds, beneitting mentally and socially from work, as well as continuing to receive an income, while simultaneously enjoying more leisure time. “It’s not only the individuals who’ll beneit; enabling individuals to remain economically active into later life is also good for employers and the broader economy.”
Talk to us about your retirement plans.

You may recall from last month that George, UCIP’s People’s Champion, had ‘gone underground’ amid rumours that he had suffered a sort of nervous breakdown. Well, we can now reveal that after a few sessions with a psychiatrist he has fully recovered and is looking forward to getting out and about again to meet people and hear more creative suggestions on how life may be improved for the masses. When asked what had driven him ‘over the edge’, he confessed that it was a chance encounter with a guy from Alfreton who had buttonholed him when he was in Tesco one day and who then spent over an hour explaining how the world would be a lot better place if we went back to doing things how we used to. As you’ll see from our summary of the points he made, it would be enough to make anyone temporarily bonkers. “When was the last time, George” he asked, “that you.................. •

George, saying that he had to get home because he’d got a man coming to see to his upstairs windows (NB – this despite him living in a bungalow, but he was so desperate, it was the first thing that came into his head!), made good his escape. This was bad enough but nothing compared to how his unsympathetic wife reacted to his explanation for not bringing back the groceries! Is it any wonder that he ‘cracked’?

YEAR RANTEE GUA
19
8 93-201
Buds and flowers on fruit trees and bushes are very vulnerable to sudden unexpected spring frosts. A covering of fleece is often the answer if a cold patch is forecast, especially if you’re growing against a wall or fence. Use sticks or canes to keep the cover off the flowers and during the day open it up to allow pollination. When primroses have finished flowering lift and divide for more next year. And cut back forsythia to strong young shoots once it has gone over. This will also encourage next year’s blooms.
r
Lift and divide perennials now and pinch out the growing tips of young plants or cuttings such as sweet peas, pelargoniums and sweet peas to encourage bushy growth and more flowers in summer. Clematis and honeysuckle will start to bound away with the spring, so tie them in to stakes to stop wind damage.
TOP TIP!
Round about now lawns start to grow consistently and once you start mowing you’ll see any problems which have developed over the winter. Often this will be bare patches which can be mended through an application of grass seed. The trouble with seed is that it may be difficult getting it to germinate. A way to speed up the process is to add seed to damp compost in a tray or bucket, cover with clingfilm and keep somewhere warm. It will probably start to develop little roots in a few days and you can sow it into the patch, having raked over the surface, added a bit of crumbly soil and covered with soil or more unseeded compost to deter the birds. 06/11/2018 18:16

The high hopes of some Nottingham Forest fans at the start of this season may have been somewhat let down. However, are there signs that the club may be building on firmer foundations… here’s our Barry with his thoughts.
Forest’s stadium, one of football’s most iconic venues, has been largely untouched for 20 years since the Trent End was built for Euro 96 – and in truth, it shows. During that time, the City Ground has been left behind by the likes of Derby County and Leicester City with the club consistently missing out on valuable funds spent by corporate and hospitality clients, owing to their rivals more modern facilities. If Forest are to move forward as a club on and off the pitch, then having a genuinely world-class stadium is paramount and the regeneration of the Trentside area is key to that plan. The plans, which would see a brandnew Peter Taylor Stand, and work done to improve the Bridgford, Trent End and Brian Clough Stands increasing the capacity to 38,000, along with a museum and various

For two decades, the Reds have languished outside the top flight of English football and watched on as their rivals Derby have played in the top flight, and the Foxes winning the Premier League in 2016, but could the tide be turning?

It’s highly unlikely they’ll secure a place in the end of season play-offs owing to their frustratingly inconsistent form, but progress has and is being made and fans shouldn’t lose sight of that, in a world which is becoming increasingly impatient. Given their performances in recent seasons, to have a glimmer of a play-off spot going into the final ten games is a marked improvement, and with the level of support following Forest, fans should be enthused about the future of their club.
