The Peak’s Ravens A bird of ill-omen The old descriptive noun for a group of ravens was ‘an unkindness’, though this seems a little harsh! Yet as birds of omen they presented a mixed blessing. An old superstition of sailors for example, was that to see one raven was good luck, to see two spelt misfortune, and to see three together, was ‘the devil’ and meant bad times ahead! Indeed, it is not difficult to see why these magnificent birds are so hard-wired into our psychology and our folklore. They are large, intelligent, and above all ‘dark’ and ‘sombre’ to behold. Nevertheless, there is so much more to discover about the raven. Today this is maybe easier than it has been for centuries since this bird is definitely on the ‘up’. The raven’s folklore associations with the grim and with bad luck, in part came about because of their rather gruesome habit of mopping up corpses and other bits in the aftermath of medieval battlefields – a tough job but someone had to do it! Indeed, people’s connections with ravens go back over millennia and were often very positive; especially so when towns began to expand in medieval times with consequent problems of filth and dirt. The raven and the kite were hugely important in maintaining a degree of (relative) cleanliness as they picked clean the carcasses in otherwise desperately filthy slums. As such, they were valued and even protected. In some ancient cultures ravens were revered for picking off the flesh of

However, in places like the Peak, persecution by gamekeepers and others combined with the use of lethal firearms since the 1700s, the raven was ruthlessly exterminated eradicated from Derbyshire in 1860 and from the Yorkshire part of the High Peak around 1863. Persecution and pollution eventually did for them. Yet today the raven has made a truly remarkable come-back and long may that continue. I recently had four ravens, maybe two pairs, circling around my house for a good twenty minutes or so. Good luck or bad I wonder? Shamefully, in Derbyshire, the government has recently approved a ‘cull’ of this remarkable bird.

Book Review

HOPE VALLEY

In the Woods by Tana French

Tana French writes books which are quite hard to categorize – and aren’t they always the good ones? The early stories focus around the Dublin Murder Squad, so - crime novel you’d think. But they’re much more complex than that, kind of literary psychological mystery tales, exceptionally good on the mystery, very tightly written and quite compulsive. A good place to start is the first Dublin story, In the Woods, which won numerous awards for this actor turned writer. It tells the tale of Adam Ryan, a 12-year-old Irish boy, found in a state of shock in woods, sitting with his back to a tree, and his shoes full of blood. His two friends, with whom he was playing, are never found. Move forward 20 years and Adam has changed name and identity to give himself a new life and is now a detective in Dublin, drawn by the romance and coolness of the job and perhaps by his childhood experiences. He seems a remarkably well adjusted chap, good at intense friendship. Then he starts investigating a recent child murder in the same place as the original disappearances. Tana French is brilliant at describing how people cope with things which go deep, when maybe you start to doubt your understanding of the world. And she’s very good at teasing out connections. She’s just published her seventh book – the first to break away from the Dublin series – to excellent reviews. In the woods is a captivating place to start. But if you like her style, there’s plenty more where it came from.

The origins of Grindleford lie in the former small agricultural hamlets of Stoke, Eyam Woodlands, Upper and Nether Padley. The earliest documented evidence is in the 1248 Derbyshire Charter, where it is mentioned as Grundelford. In the Assize Rolls of 1359, it is recorded as Gryndilford and Gryndelford Bridge. This latter name gives the clue as to how it further developed as a settlement. North Derbyshire is criss-crossed with medieval routes that were used by the packhorse drivers, known as salters from the loads of salt that they carried, the tracks became known as saltways. Grindleford was on one of these, as evidenced by footpath names Scott’s Close, Stoneybank and Haslin Slack. The influence of transport has shaped the development of the village over the centuries.

In the heart of Grindleford, next to St Helen’s Church, we are a community-owned and run village shop, selling all your essential groceries and lots more besides. Open daily, we are here to serve the local community and the many visitors who come to enjoy the Hope Valley. The purpose of this project was to re-establish the village shop and to provide a central meeting point and focus for village activities and this has been successfully achieved. The current home of the shop, in St Helen’s Church Vestry, is on two major walking routes and we welcome lots of interesting, happy and sometimes chilly visitors in need of a cup of tea and homemade cake. We have a lovely garden in the church grounds where, on sunny days, you can enjoy a view of the river and sit under our oak tree admiring the Derbyshire hills. As well as stocking all the kitchen staples, we

pride ourselves on showcasing locally-made products, from fresh bread, meat, honey and delicious curries, to pies, home-made cakes, teas and good coffee. However, we also act as an exchange for local information, organise a nationally renowned fundraising cylosportive every September and work with our church, to bring together groups such as the Grindleford Singers. We hope to continue for many more years, and are very happy to talk to anyone who is interested in setting up a community shop in their own area. We can thoroughly recommend it!, Sun 12-4pm Card payments taken Grindleford Community Shop Ltd has been supported through LEADER in the Peak District Rural Action Zone, part of the Rural Development Programme for England, which is jointly funded by Defra and the European Union, and is delivered by Derbyshire Economic Partnership.

Grindleford may be named after “the ford where grindstones crossed the river, or because the original ford had become too deep for use and had been “ground away”. The importance of crossing the River Derwent led to the building of a bridge, first documented in 1577, but probably an earlier wooded structure existed. The present bridge was built around 1758 and underneath the arches the joints where the ashlar blocks were joined when the bridge was widened at a later date can be seen. By the 18th Century, Turnpike roads were established, and Grindleford was at the meeting point of three. The Buxton to Sheffield Turnpike came down through Padley Woods from Fox House, crossing the river; it then ran straight up over Sir William Hill. The 1758 Newhaven to Grindleford route followed the course of the modern B6001 from the bridge to Calver and Hassop. The Mortimer Turnpike of 1771, which linked Derbyshire with the West Riding via Penistone, ran north towards Hathersage.

GRINDLEFORD IN THE HOPE VALLEY

Toll Bar Cottage, on the north side of the bridge, is a reminder of the Turnpikes. Dating from the 17th Century, The Toll House fell into disrepair when the turnpike closed in 1884, but it was renovated in the 1930’s. The village grew slowly, at the time of the 1813 Enclosures it was a scattered hamlet of just 30 or so buildings strung along the hillsides. By time that the 1839 Tithe Map was compiled there had been a period of development, brought about by the growing trade from the turnpikes. In the early 19th Century, agriculture was still important, but was joined by the tannery and quarries as major sources of employment. Other trades included those of farriers, wheelwrights, innkeepers, blacksmiths, wiredrawers, gardeners, joiners and shoemakers; there were 5 shopkeepers, including a tailor, and 2 carriers to Sheffield. The first Methodist Chapel was built in 1830 and in 1876 the Primary School was opened, it is still thriving today.

A Short History of Grindleford by Alan Jacques (Part 3) This quiet rural backwater c h a n g e d significantly with the coming of the Midland Railway, opening up the Hope Valley to a boom in both population and tourism. Grindleford Station, at the western end of Totley Tunnel was the nearest and therefore the cheapest, destination to and from Sheffield. The line opened in 1893, and the following year passenger services began. Most of the present day buildings originate from the time of the coming of the railway. The new population of commuters brought with them a newfound prosperity and needed better housing and improved facilities. A larger Methodist Chapel

18

was built and opened in 1905; the Maynard Arms Hotel was built in 1908; St. Helen’s Church was consecrated in 1910; the Grindleford Model Laundry was opened on the site of the former Tannery in 1913; housing and shops along the Main Road were developed. The Commercial Hotel was enlarged and given the new name of The Sir William Hotel. The most significant historical event in Grindleford was in 1588, at Padley Hall, with tragic consequences. Two Roman Catholic priests, Robert Ludlum and Nicholas Garlick held an illegal mass in the chapel at Padley, where the Fitzherbert family were under suspicion of harbouring priests. At their trial the priests were found guilty of treason, sentenced to death and then hanged, drawn and quartered on St. Mary’s Bridge at Derby. Now the Chapel and ruins of the hall hold an annual pilgrimage to remember the tragic Padley Martyrs.

Gardener’s Calendar

Buds and flowers on fruit trees and bushes are very vulnerable to sudden unexpected spring frosts. A covering of fleece is often the answer if a cold patch is forecast, especially if you’re growing against a wall or fence. Use sticks or canes to keep the cover off the flowers and during the day open it up to allow pollination. When primroses have finished flowering lift and divide for more next year. And cut back forsythia to strong young shoots once it has gone over. This will also encourage next year’s blooms.

r

Lift and divide perennials now and pinch out the growing tips of young plants or cuttings such as sweet peas, pelargoniums and sweet peas to encourage bushy growth and more flowers in summer. Clematis and honeysuckle will start to bound away with the spring, so tie them in to stakes to stop wind damage.

Round about now lawns start to grow consistently and once you start mowing you’ll see any problems which have developed over the winter. Often this will be bare patches which can be mended through an application of grass seed. The trouble with seed is

that it may be difficult getting it to germinate. A way to speed up the process is to add seed to damp compost in a tray or bucket, cover with clingfilm and keep somewhere warm. It will probably start to develop little roots in a few days and you can sow it into the patch, having raked over the surface, added a bit of crumbly soil and covered with soil or more unseeded compost to deter the birds.
