The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood

To say Margaret Atwood is a bit of a superstar writer is an understatement. In the wake of The Handmaid’s Tale on TV, which has introduced the Canadian author to a whole new audience, she’s arriving on our shores in autumn for a sell-out speaking tour of the UK. So fans are currently waiting for Testaments, described as a sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale. But in the meantime a short treat from Margaret Atwood is The Penelopiad, written as part of a series in which wellknown current writers such as Philip Pullman and Jeanette Winterson have re-told myths from ancient times. In the original story, Penelope is the perfect devoted wife of Odysseus, silently weaving and waiting for her hero husband to return covered in glory from a conquering voyage around the world. But The Penelopiad naturally gives us a slightly different version of events. Sly, feisty, clever and funny, Penelope is keeping the kingdom together while her husband slays dragons and sleeps with goddesses. She’s supported, if that is the word, by a chorus of “naughty” maids who, like most bit players in these kinds of story, come to a sticky end. Needless to say, the chaps in this telling of the tale don’t emerge covered in glory, but it is immense fun with some serious barbs and you don’t need any knowledge of Greek myths to get it.

Vaccination Q & As • What is a vaccine?

A vaccination is an injection designed to make an animal’s immune system create antibodies against specific infections.

• How do vaccines work?

When we give a vaccination we are injecting a small dose of a harmless version of the virus/ bacteria we want to protect your pet against. This allows the body to produce a protective response without having been in contact with the dangerous form of the disease. Once your pet has responded to the vaccine if it comes into contact with the virus/bacteria in later life it will have natural protection also known as immunity.

• Will it hurt?

There may be some mild discomfort associated with the injection although we do use small needles.

• Are there any side effects?

Vaccine reactions are uncommon and usually mild. They may include swelling or firmness at the site of the injection this will usually settle in time but if it does not we advise you get the swelling checked as in some rare cases they can develop into something serious. Your pet may be a little quiet and off their food or have a mild temperature.

• I don’t know if my new pet has been fully vaccinated what do I do?

If your pet has come to you with no vaccination history it is usually better to assume that they have not had vaccines and start the course of vaccines for them to ensure that they are fully protected. The other option would be to titre test them to assess their levels of antibodies.

• What happens if I miss a booster?

It depends on how long over their booster due date it has been there is some leeway with booster vaccinations but this varies so we would advise you check with your vets. If it has been too long after their last vaccination it may be necessary to re start the course as if they were a puppy or kitten

• Why do I need to vaccinate my pet every year?

Vaccinations are recommended every year in order to boost your pets immunity. We are aware people are worried about over vaccination and they feel that it is unnecessary to vaccinate every year and it is just a way of vets making money. It is true for only some of the diseases we vaccinate against however Leptospirosis and the viruses that cause cat flu and feline leukaemia do require yearly vaccination for this reason we use a rolling protocol for our vaccines which ensure that we only vaccinate those things that are needed to prevent over vaccination but ensures pets are protected

• Can my pets be vaccinated if they are on medication?

Depending on what medication your pet is on it is often possible to continue with their vaccines as normal. Medicines that affect the immune system may affect the response they get to the vaccinations so they may have to be delayed. We would always advise discussing with your vet when vaccines are due if your pet is on any medication.

• Can my pets be vaccinated against if they are unwell?

No your pet needs to be fit and well when we give them their vaccinations to ensure that they obtain the correct immune response Article written by Scarsdale Vet, Unit 2 Nottingham Road, Alfreton, DE55 7GR.

Rambles with RafFa lake and

I’ve said before that our resident rambler, David from JH legal is a master of finding some hidden gems, when it comes to working out these walks and this month is a prime example of that. It’s likely that I would’ve never have visited this area but it is well worth the short trip down the M1 for some lovely countryside, and a nice dog-friendly walk.

8. Continue to pass 2 more marker posts on your right. A short distance after the second marker post the hedge on your right ends. At this point be sure to keep left along a footpath and ignore a metal swing gate that you can see over to your diagonal right. 9. Continue along the footpath for a short distance then pass through some trees until reaching a marker post on your left and a tall signpost in front of you. At this point turn left following the arrow and the ‘Great

walk along the road keeping a stone wall on your right. Continue to pass through a gap adjacent to a large metal gate to continue straight ahead along a gravel lane and signposted bridleway.

2. Follow the lane as it bends around to the left and crosses over the motorway. Immediately after and at a T junction of lanes turn left along a lane and signposted bridleway. The lane narrows and bends to the right then continues with a hedge on your left and open views to your right.

10. Walk along this path for some distance ignoring any paths to the left or right until reaching a hand rail on your right and a set of steps down to a road. Turn left along the road for a short distance and then turn left to cross over a stile onto footpath marked for ‘Strelley’. Continue along the footpath to cross over another stile and into a field.

7. Follow the path back out of the trees and keep on it ignoring any other path to the right, keeping a drop to your right. You will head back into some trees for a short distance. At a yellow marker post on your left turn right ignoring the path uphill in front of you. Pass another marker post on your left to emerge back out of the trees.

6. Turn left along the road until it ends then keep straight ahead along a marked footpath with some trees on your right. When the trees end, keep straight across an open section of field and then continue with trees on your right. Just prior to reaching the very far side of the field turn right into the trees along a footpath going downhill.

We begin outside Strelley Hall before crossing over the M1 and following a section of the Robin Hood Way to Swingate. We walk past the Swingate Water Tower and then loop through some nice countryside bordering Kimberley and Awsworth before heading back towards Swingate and retracing our steps back to the start.

Continue uphill for quite some distance until reaching a T junction of lanes. Turn right to continue along a gravel lane. After some distance you will pass a footpath on your right signposted for ‘Cossall’. Continue ahead along the lane as it bears around to the left and turns into a tarmac road. Follow the lane around to the left and pass some houses on your right. When the houses on your right end continue straight ahead to pass a tall metal fence and a water tower on your left. 14. Just after the water tower and just prior to the first house on your right, turn right along a footpath. Follow the path, and then join the road, retracing your steps from earlier straight ahead along the road as it becomes a bridleway, then a path. Continue as it turns sharp left and then turn right to cross back over the motorway. Follow the lane around to the right and pass through a gap by metal gate back onto the road you began on to return to the start.

This walk is for illustrative purposes only. Voice Magazines takes no responsibility for anyone who chooses to follow this route and encourages all walkers to obey all byelaws and signs and to respect the area they are walking in, ensuring they pick up all dog mess and obey the countryside code at all times.

We receive no official funding, or lottery funding and are dependent on donations from the public. We run five centres in the east of England, including your nearest one in Nottinghamshire at Warsop Lane, Blidworth, NG21 0PG. We are open 1:30pm to 4:00pm every day except Wednesday.

GIVE A DOG A HOME

The fire, which happened over night on the 4th April 2019 at the Jerry Green Dog Rescue, Nottinghamshire Centre, thankfully, injured none of the staff or rescue dogs. However, there was considerable damage done to the boiler room and equipment where the fire started. This boiler ensures the centre is able to house dogs searching for their forever home. In the short term, centre staff have purchased heaters to ensure the kennels continue to be a safe and warm environment. The cost of these alone has had an impact and with the boiler needing to be replaced and repairs looming to ensure the future heating of the centre, we wonder if you would be able to help. The main reception area at Jerry Green Dog Rescue will be open as normal. Jerry Green Dog Rescue are grateful for any donation you are able to make to help cover the cost of the temporary heating, and to maintain the warmth while we plan for the long term future solution.

Mike’us sings M

Our antipodean friends have a reputation (amongst themselves at least) of being tough, rough and ready but maybe that’s because we only hear half the story… here’s Mike with one of his own.

Australian Men

(are they all mouth and no trousers?) You may recall that last month we told you that George was recovering from a stress related illness and he’s asked me to pass on his appreciation for all the kind messages he’s received. It’s been a welcome change for him to hear people enquiring as to his own health rather than hearing them go on, and on, and on (and on again!) about what’s wrong with the world and some questionable – frankly weird - suggestions as to how to put things right. Well, although he has been making progress, he’s not yet ready to face the public and as a result, I’m unable to bring you the latest, occasionally surreal revelations on how we might ‘improve the quality of life’. All being well, he’ll be back in June. That being the case, and following a visit to Australia earlier this year, I want to share with you details of an incident that has made me question whether or not Australian men are all they would like us to believe. It may be a stereotype but I’m referring to the image of big hulking Adonises, with surf board under arm, who merely have to crook a finger to have the female of the species go all trembly at the knee.

Well, having travelled over the Snowy Mountains, the missus and myself decided to spend the night in Wagga Wagga. NB – it may be a little unfair on the good burghers of this town but it most definitely does not fit Frank Sinatra’s theory that ‘it’s so good, they named it twice!’ Whatever, we found a room for the night and headed for a refreshing drink. This took us into the Thirsty Crow, probably the most up-market pub in town. It was there that I overheard the following conversation between two apparently hard drinking Aussie fellas. First man – “I really need this drink. I’ve just had another fight with the wife”

His mate – “Oh yeah, this is becoming a regular event. How did this one end?” “Well,” replied the first man, “when it was over she came over to me on her hand and knees.” “Wow, you’re kidding me,” says his pal, “that’s impressive. And what did she say then?” The first man took a swig of drink and composed himself before replying, “She simply said, ‘Come out from under the bed you coward!’”

Gardener’s Calendar

The urge to get all your summer bedding out is almost overwhelming at this time of year, but don’t give in till you’re more or less sure that the risk of frost is past – which means the end of May for most people unless you’re in a sheltered pocket. Meanwhile harden off indoor or greenhouse grown plants by taking them out during the day and back into shelter at night. Spring bulbs will easily last you more than one year, but not if you cut back the foliage. They need to keep on photosynthesising to store starch in the bulb for next year. This even applies to tulips. So just deadhead and if possible given them a liquid fertiliser dressing. The leaves will die down quite quickly.

r

Forget-me-nots are a marmite plant. You either love them or hate them. Very pretty for a short period but then they get very straggly and messy and self seed to an amazing degree, spreading everywhere. One answer is to enjoy the flowers then pull most of them out after they have flowered and before they go to seed.

TOP TIP! Dandelions are a pain in the wrong place, but they’re also a great source of early pollen for bees, so if you’re cultivating a wildlife friendly garden, don’t use weedkiller on them or you’re likely to kill the bees which try to drink from them. A trusty trowel will hoof them out, but try to bring the whole root out so they don’t get a chance to come back.

COOPER’S CORNER Racism – It’s not a subject we should still be talking about as we approach the second decade of the 21st century. But here we are again. We are quick to condemn individuals for their acts but isn’t there more we collectively should be doing to stamp it out. Here’s our Barry with his thoughts.

There seems to have been a worrying increase in the number of racist incidents in football over the last few weeks, and the game certainly has a very concerning problem which isn’t going away. Or does it? Football is a microcosm of society. Whatever happens in society, generally will be seen in football and that’s what is being reflected here. If we’ve learnt anything from the national disgrace that is the handling of Brexit, we now know just how big the divides are within society and we’re seeing those play out on the football pitch. Players should be safe from abuse. Players should be afforded the platform to go on and showcase their abilities, not be inhibited or scared and worry about what’s being hurled down from the stands, or in the case of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the north London derby earlier this season, a banana thrown at his feet. The question is, what can we do about it? Football’s major international governing bodies, FIFA and UEFA appear utterly incompetent when it comes to dealing with the issue. They’re much harder on a

player wearing a sponsor on his undershirt than a club or country which allows its fans to bellow monkey chants at the likes of Danny Rose or Raheem Sterling. Until the authorities, and I include our own in that, take a stand and start dishing out some severe punishments, then people will continue to act as they see fit. Start dishing out jail terms, deducting points from clubs, making them play games behind closed doors and revoking their television money. Clubs at the top level and on the international stage exist for no other reason than to make a profit, so to hit them where it hurts could be an effective catalyst for change.

Until that point, we’ll still have debate after debate. It’ll go quiet for a little bit until the next flare-up and then we’ll all stamp our feet and demand action - repeat the process as many times as you see fit. Let’s go with points deductions and expulsion from competitions coupled with jail terms, and we might start to see some change.

Here at Piped Up we offer a wide range of services from a replacement washer to a full heating system...

Until then, it’s all just white noise, words and little substance.
