RAMTC are bringing another cracking show to the community this year, 9 to 5. There is still time to get your tickets and support the group by contacting Mansfield Theatre. It will be a great evening out, as it always is and if you don’t know the story, here is a brief outline below….

Set in the late 1970's, this hilarious story of friendship & revenge is outrageous, thought provoking, risqué and even a little romantic. Pushed to boiling point by their sexist and egotistical boss, three female office workers concoct a plan to turn the tables on their despicable boss and transform their workplace. It’s about teaming up, standing up and taking care of business! This hilarious production is brought to you by the award winning Ripley & Alfreton Musical Theatre Company.

Book Review Circe by Madeline Miller

If you enjoyed last month’s recommendation of the Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood, you’ll love Circe by Madeline Miller. ( Kir-Keh if you’re interested in the Greek pronunciation).

Chosen as a book of the year by numerous reviewers and newspapers, the novel casts Circe, the witch goddess of Homer’s Odyssey (the one who trapped poor Odysseus on her island for a year and turned sailors into pigs) as a heroine in her own right, not just a bit player in a man’s mythic tale. If there is a similarity to the Atwood book, it is the idea of female empowerment, giving a woman the right to her own story as part of the history of women which, it might be argued, has been so often left out of official (or even literary) accounts. But it’s also a lovely, lyrical and sometimes very dark tale where the expectations of normal human morals are turned on their head. These are the stories of mortals, gods and monsters which are perfectly in tune and relevant for a modern audience. And the story is also a subtle sideways look at what it means to be a human, whether male or female. It’s compelling and beautifully written. It educates and entertains and captivates. A brilliant joyous treat.

Rambles with RafFa lake and

This walk is a little further out but is worth the journey to check out a little piece of history. The Parliament Oak, which the legend says King John held an informal parliament under following a revolt by the Welsh. Now it sits in a layby off the A6075 and is about halfway around our walk. Another great ramble from David at JH Legal – what a star he is!

We begin on the outside of Warsop and follow Oakfield Lane to cross the A6075. The route then winds through a part of the historic Sherwood forest before reaching the Parliament Oak. We cross back over the A6075 and wind back through the forest before heading back through the outskirts of Warsop, back to where we bgan.

START: Park opposite Warsop Recycling Centre 1, Oakfield Lane Market Warsop. NG20 0JE 1. Standing with your back to the recycling centre turn right and continue gently uphill along a gravel lane. Continue straight ahead for some distance and then pass ‘Greenacres’ on your left-hand side. Continue straight ahead along the lane for a long distance and eventually you will reach a main road. Cross straight over the road and continue along a footpath entering into some woodland.

2. After a short distance ignore a footpath sharp to the left and continue straight ahead through the trees along a footpath running parallel with the road over to your right. Continue straight ahead for some distance and eventually you will reach a T junction with a lane. Turn left to continue along the lane. After a short distance the lane bends around to the left and a little further on the lane narrows to a footpath. At this point ignore the path to the left and continue straight ahead going through the trees. 3. Continue straight ahead for some distance and then just prior to the path bending to the right, turn left onto another footpath. Continue along this path with just a few trees and then open views to your right and woodland on your left. After some distance ignore a major path on your left and then continue for a long distance being sure to stay close to the open views on your right.

4½ -mile circular walk from Warsop Oakfield via Parliament Oak A medium length walk which should take you and your dog around 2½-3 hours to complete. There are a couple of roads so please take care. Most of the walk is on paths and trails but please wear appropriat1e footwear and please follow the countryside code.

18

Don’t forget to mention Voice Magazines when responding to the Ads

4. Continue until you reach a clearing and then at this point continue straight ahead and pass beneath some power lines. Continue straight ahead back into the trees and eventually you will reach a T junction with a tarmac lane with a metal gate just to your right. Turn left at the T junction and continue for a very short distance to a main road passing a signboard for ‘Parliament Oak’ on your left. 5. Cross straight over the main road and continue along a lane for a very short distance. Then turn left onto a footpath (WARNING: THIS PATH IS HARD TO SPOT) to go back into the trees. This path runs parallel with the road over to your left. After some distance you will cross over a lane with a wooden gate and the main road over to your left to continue

back into the trees along a footpath running parallel with the road. 6. After some distance you will come into a clearing. Continue a little further on to reach a T junction with a lane. Turn left along the lane for a short distance and then just prior to reaching a wooden gate and a main road, turn right to continue along a footpath going through the trees running parallel with the road. Continue along this footpath for some distance until reaching a T junction of footpaths with a fence directly in front of you. Turn right to continue along a footpath going gently downhill with a fence on your left. 7. Ignoring any paths to the right continue straight ahead for some distance until reaching a clearing. Continue straight ahead passing underneath some power lines and close by to a pylon on your left. After, head back into the trees and be sure to ignore the path immediately to the right and continue straight ahead keeping, and staying close to open views on your left. 8. 8Continue straight ahead for quite some distance being sure to stay close to the open views on your left. Eventually you will reach a T junction of paths. Turn left and then continue straight ahead with a hedge and open views to your left. Continue straight ahead for some distance until reaching and passing underneath a railway bridge onto a road. Follow the road for a short distance to a T junction of roads and then turn left. 9. Follow this road for quite some distance until reaching another T junction of roads. Turn left and after a short distance pass underneath a railway bridge to continue back to the start/ finish

This walk is for illustrative purposes only. Voice Magazines takes no responsibility for anyone who chooses to follow this route and encourages all walkers to obey all byelaws and signs and to respect the area they are walking in, ensuring they pick up all dog mess and obey the countryside code at all times.

Mike’us sings M

I hope you are enjoying our ‘best of’ Mike’s Musings. I think we all have a list like this. Personally, I’m just glad it’s not just me!

Things that annoy all decent minded people’ (well…….me at least)

Having had feedback from the previous edition of Voice Magazine, it appears as if I’m not on my own. Did you know that one lady in our village actually divorced her first husband on the grounds of mental cruelty? Despite repeated warnings, he had continued to replace toilet rolls under………. rather than over the holder. All I can say is he got what he deserved! Right then, I’ve added two more gripes from my long list of ‘things that get my goat’

NHS vasectomy. Yes lads – they’d change their minds then. Might even stop them going on about giving birth! Part 4 - Whilst having a meal, either at home or in a restaurant/café, why do a growing number of ‘diners’ feel the need to constantly refer to their phone/tablet etc? Are they bored? Are they shy? Are they introverted? Are they simply being rude? NB - only one of these suggestions is definitely right. Solution – if I had my way!

Part 3 - Why do half of the world’s population - and you know who you are! – raise their collective feminine eyebrows to the sky when they hear a man say “I’m not feeling very well?” As an example, last week I picked up a particularly severe case of ‘jive knee’ at our dancing class. This followed a nasty bout of Cha Cha Cha induced migraine the previous week. Was there any sense of understanding or sympathy from the ladies present? Don’t bother answering! Solution – if I had my way! Set up a Government funded research programme project to see if it is possible to recreate the acute pain and mental anguish experienced by those who have endured an

Introduce a law that states that in a dining situation, all electronic devices must be handed over to the oldest person present for safe keeping. Anyone failing to comply with this legal requirement - and prior to their arrest! - must either a) pay for the meal or b) do the washing up. Someone recently reminded me that Snickers Bars used to be known as Marathon. That got me thinking! Do you know what the following are now known as? As usual, no prizes – just for fun. Datsun, Opal Fruits, Constantinople, The Quarrymen, Brad’s Drink, Bombay, Pete’s Super Submarines, Blue Ribbon Sports, Walker’s Stadium, Northern Rhodesia. As usual, answers are at the bottom of the page.

What would happen to you and your family if you became ill and unable to work? As you go through life your financial focus changes. In our experience we see key life defining moments having a massive impact on the financial security of an individual or family. Our lives are marked with significant events, for example buying our first home, getting married, having children, perhaps getting divorced or a loved one becoming sick. All these, and many more, have an impact on our finances. What would happen to you and your family if you became ill and unable to work?........... According to a survey of financial advisers undertaken by Royal London, many advisers feel that younger consumers are looking at their income protection needs too late. Is this because they don’t feel a ‘need’ or is just because they’re unaware of what protection is available to give them security? In our opinion, if you start paying income protection from a young age and get used to the monthly outgoing then it is much easier to manage and budget for. Knowing that you don’t run the risk of losing your home for example and having a regular monthly income if you are unable to work due to illness, is a reassurance we all would like so let’s start talking about it sooner rather than later. Short or long-term policies are available so make sure you’re aware of what is out there so you can manage the unexpected better.

Contact us today to discuss your protection needs. 12 Diamond Avenue, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottingham, NG17 7GR 01623 750000 info@hampshirehill.co.uk www.hampshirehill.co.uk Important information The way in which tax charges (or tax relief, as appropriate) are applied depends on individual circumstances and may be subject to future change. Gardener’s Calendar

Before

After

After

There are quite a lot of opinions on moss in a garden. There are moss killers about for those who prefer perfect grass, and if you do want to get rid of it, cut back overhanging branches or foliage to allow the patch more light and aerate the ground properly so grass roots will survive better. But there’s also the view that if moss is growing in your garden, it’s probably because the conditions are right and that it might be worth thinking about leaving it be and letting it create a lush Japanese-style carpet which you don’t have to cut. It prefers cool, shady damp ground and you can help it to expand by transplanting tiny pieces from an existing bed.

r

A blessing or a curse, it’s your decision. Oriental poppies are spectacular but can look very messy once they’ve flowered. Deadhead them and cut back to ground level to encourage new growth. You may also find that hardy geraniums will flower again later in the year if you cut them back after flowering.

Before

Water any edible crops in grow bags and containers once daily preferably in the early morning. If you have potatoes in containers don’t over-water as this may compact the soil and prevent tubers from swelling. Feed weekly.

TOP TIP!

Top tip: Keeping thirsty plants well watered can be difficult if it’s hot this month... Dig a well around the base and this will enable to water to be absorbed deeper at root level.

Leaking Roofs & Gutters Tiling, Slating & Chimney Repairs

So, the football season is over and all that’s left is the memories, some bad, some good and some, which were quite frankly bizarre – VAR has certainly had an impact on the beautiful game. But I’m not the one to make sense of it all. I’ll pass you over to our Barry for that honour… If you’re sitting down... We’ve had nine months of chaos, drama, chairmen exposing themselves on social media, clubs spying on each other and no shortage of incredible comebacks. And that barely scratches the surface. Have we ever known a campaign quite like it? I certainly can’t remember one where I’ve constantly used the phrase, ‘bloody football, eh’? In truth, we should have known we were in for something special after England’s terrific performance at the World Cup in Russia, which was followed up by an impressive Nations League campaign. At the time of penning this column, Derby County had just upset the odds to beat old foes Leeds United in the play-off semi-final, while Nottingham Forest watched on with eyes of envy as the Rams clocked up another Wembley appearance having failed in their quest for a top six finish. Elsewhere, Mansfield Town and manager David Flitcroft somehow managed to pass up the giftwrapped opportunity of promotion to League One and Notts County, well, oh dear Notts County. Installed as promotion favourites last summer following a fine season which saw them narrowly beaten by Coventry City in the play-off semi-final at Meadow Lane, the walls have since come crashing down around them. No longer can the Magpies call upon the prestigious title of ‘World’s Oldest League Club’ – a crown which will inevitably feel like a kick deep into the genitals for their fans, has now been passed over to Forest.

And no, it isn’t Stoke City. We’ve had that confirmed by the EFL – as if there was ever any doubt. Instead of facing up to life in the third tier, as they hoped would be their reward come the end of the season, they’re now plotting trips to Fylde, Bromley, Dover and Barrow. At least Notts’ old chums Chesterfield will be there to give them a warm embrace. What the Magpies’ collapse has shown for all to see, is that if you don’t get the right people on board, allow egos to take control and get recruitment all wrong, this is always a risk. I’ve written in this column earlier in the campaign about Alan Hardy’s indiscretions – a man who arguably had good intentions from the outset, but lacked the professionalism, respect or nous to ever allow the club to be managed successfully. Hardy’s desperation to be liked, to be front and centre became his downfall and now, he’ll forever be remembered as the man who took the oldest league club in world football, out of it. Getting back won’t be easy for Notts, they’ll be the big fish in a very competitive pond. Just ask Mansfield, Lincoln, Luton and more recently Chesterfield, just how tough the National League is, and make no mistake about it, they will be the big scalp. It will be a long road back for the Magpies, but it’ll be fascinating watching from close by to see how it all plays out. But first, they must sort out the ownership. Then and only then can this famous old bird start moving forward in the right direction.
